Siddhas are in Srimata's possession and not in any other's'. For others, when they practice dharma, the Siddhas remain in their possession and when they practice unrighteousness, they disappear. When someone with demonic nature gains them, they do not come of use in the time of need. Those who know this truth do not hanker for the siddhas. They do not worship for Siddhas. They follow Devotional worship and dharmacharana. By the grace of Amma, siddhas are attained. Those who have such a grace are real virtuous men or Siddha purushas.

>> SOMOK ROY: Our Appaji, Girija Devi
Having no training in music, I was the most undeserving of her students and yet she consciously took me under her wings, much to the bewilderment of her senior students. She would switch from Gaud Sarang to Malkauns and Yaman, in order to ensure that I didn’t feel alienated or left out. The grand old lady whose complex tappas flashed brighter than her diamond nose-stud, who spent mornings teaching ragas like Desi Todi and Surdasi Malhar, would make me learn paltas in Bilwalal, in the evening. Her patience knew no bounds and her presence soon became a sanctuary of sorts.
Staying at Appaji’s was a holistic experience. From savouring her favourite Banarasi delicacies (worth mentioning are chura-matar, Banarasi pulao, and kele ka kofta), to watching reality shows on television, Appaji brimmed with life. My fondest memories are those of the slightly longish summer afternoons, when we would listen to the Banaras old masters like Siddheshwari Devi and Mahadev Mishra after lunch, as the sun languished outside the curtained windows of her room. I would incessantly ask about her Banaras days, and she would paint the everyday and the spectacular before me, now the sun sneaking in through a crevice to touch our conversation, driven by an irresistible urge to merge with the waters in Banaras, where Appa heard the darling songstresses of yesteryears in barges afloat on the Ganges. I wonder if they still put up swings during the rains, if the barges still resonate with piloo chaitis on Budhwa Mangal (the first Wednesday after Holi), if they get roses from Mirzapur to celebrate Gulabbari (a festival to mark the arrival of spring). I wonder if anyone ‘lives’ Banaras as our Appaji did. Did she not, after all, live like she was Banaras’ own fish, who knew its streets, like fishes know water? Otherwise, how could her enunciation of phrases like ‘jale ko aur jalana’ (to scorch the burnt) in the fabled dadra deewana kiye shyamand ‘tadapu jaise jal bina machhaliya’ (I yearn like a fish out of water) in her self-composed dadra in Mishra Kirwani, leave listeners so unsettled?
This fire moulded the phoenix that inhabits two of her nayikas, virahotkanthita (agonised by separation) and vipralabdha (deceived by her lover) – their anguish reducing them to ashes, their unflinching hope making them more alive than ever. Appaji embodies this cyclic continuity, and she was born into it. Her baramasas were rooted in the agrarian cycle of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, in its matrilineal quilt of succeeding seasons, which smelt of the early summer sweat and the monsoon petrichor. She embroidered this delicate heirloom of hers with utmost dexterity, like a craftsman, dying it in the rich, court-born hues of the Seniya and Banaras traditions, and yet retaining the lilting simplicity of purab.

Totally in love with Varanasi, actress Mita Vasisht was recently in the city, for the recce of her film based on art and craft of an actor in accordance to the ancient Natya Shastra.Varanasi is a familiar place for this spirited actress, who has very beautiful memories of the city, when she first came here in the 80s. “I came to Banaras as a young actress for a major film based on the great music icon Siddeshawari Devi that was canned here in the 80s. I was introduced to Banaras through this film based on the great musician that was directed by Mani Kaul. I got familiarised with Banaras’ tradition of singing, riyaaz, chintan-manan, internalisation, all through the music of Siddheshwari Devi. Even then I felt the city was amazing, the circle of life and death co-exists beautifully here. While shooting, we often saw people carrying a dead body on an arthi; they would stop for a while, have tea, and then continue with their journey, which was really astounding. So I fell in love with Banaras through its tradition, music, heritage, even the dirt, which was far more graceful, than the cleaning up drives these days,” said the Taal and Rahasya actress, adding, “I don’t understand why they have put up toilets on the ghats? Why have you put benches on the ghats for God’s sake! I feel that people on the ghats are supposed to stand and sit as equals. I have seen the Banaras of then, which I am totally in love with, even today. I have an image of Banaras of the 80s locked in my memory. But I still love coming back to this city.” Quite passionate about her project on Natya Shastra, which she as written and directed, Mita said, “I am doing the last leg of my film, which is on the art and craft of the actor as per the Natya Shastra and how director Mani Kaul was engaged in its various aspects. It was there in his cinema but he really never talked about it. It’s a Films Division project, a non-fiction film which is a series of improvisations, where every improvisation opens you to the understanding of performance, as per the ancient treatise. The film is a personal experience in terms of craft. How a 2500 year old craft is applicable to a contemporary craft like cinema today. Our Indian traditions are fantastic in terms of the knowledge that they have. We have not understood it and have put it away as archaic, ancient and irrelevant. Rather it is very a vast, highly conscious knowledge, which is timeless. You cannot get more modern than this traditional knowledge, which is timelessly modern. All the modernity you are seeking, of thoughts, concepts, philosophies are all there. Even how to craft yourself into a fabulous actor is also mentioned in these ancient traditions.”  A pass out of National School of Drama (NSD), Mita who has worked in films like ‘Drohkal’ and ‘Rudaali‘, said, “When I came out of NSD, I was ready for the best. We were lucky that we had the best of teachers, which is not the case with NSD now. They have diluted their own teaching and don’t have great teachers now, but things were different at that time. Since I was ready for the best so it came to me, whether it was mainstream or avant-garde cinema. Even on television I got the chance to work with the best like Gulzar sahab and Shyam Benegal. My choice of projects is connected to how well I take care of my craft. The moment I have bypassed my craft and taken a short cut, it has not worked out,” said the actress who confides that she too succumbed to world pressure for some time. “Directors used to suggest that Mita, you first become a commercial star and we will make all our films with you. They were the same directors who had cast me in their films when I was completely unknown. Then people would give reasons that why I was not a commercial success. I walked away from all of it but it made me disillusioned with the idea that all you need in this world is talent. I did not work for some time with my full energy but I stuck to the idea that values and principles in your craft and life counts. Which is why 30 years down the line, I feel happy about how I look and also about the kind of work that comes to me. I don’t feel I am time bound as an actress. What I have is much more than that I don’t have,” she added.  Mita, who has worked in TV shows like ‘Bharat Ek Khoj‘, to the more recent ‘Kala Teeka’ , said that Television recognised talent but the industry doesn’t want to acknowledge it. “There are lot of awards for TV shows but that is not for sheer talent. Those awards are for promoting your show and at times the main lead. They will appreciate talent, may be in negative roles as they don’t have an option there since a negative role is successful only if the actor is really good. The television industry wants to have power over its actors, and for actors who are very individualistic. There is an idea that you have to be a one rung below us and we will make sure that you remain that way.” She went on to add, “Earlier on TV, everyone had their value whether it was the writer, producer or actors. Actors were just actors, they were not supposed to be anything else. It was important for them to come on time, sleep on time, wake up on time and be good for the camera. There definitely came a time on TV when you suddenly felt that an actor has to do much more, in terms of PR, than to just go quietly home at the end of the day. It struck me that this is not how I started out. I began with the idea that as long as you have the talent to deliver, it is all you need to give your energies to. The waste of my energy today as an actor is a lot. The energy that goes into the upkeep of being an actor takes away time from more important things like the actor’s riyaaz.”   TOI : 4th. June,18

Second is Dhrupad Mela, Dhrupad mela is a five days musical festival devoted to dhrupad style held at Tulsi Ghat in February to March. Third is Hanuman Jayanti, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple celebrates Hanuman Jayanti in March to April and this jayanti refer to Hanuman God. The Ram Lila of Ramnagar is a dramatic enactment of Rama’s legend, as told in Rama Charitra Manasa. The plays sponsored by Kashi Naresh and performed in Ramnagar every evening for 31 Days. On the last day of this festival, the festivities reach a crescendo as Rama vanquishes the demon king Ravana. Kashi Naresh Udit Narayan Singh started this tradition around 1830. Nag Nathaiya is celebrated on the fourth lunar day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Karti (October to November). It commemorates the victory of Krishna over the serpent Kaliya. On this occasion, a large Kadamba tree (Neolamarckia cadamba) branch is planted on the banks of the Ganges so that a boy, playing the role of Krishna, can jump into the river on to the effigy representing Kaliya. He stands over the effigy in a dancing pose playing the flute, while an audience watches from the banks of the river or from boats. Bharat Milap celebrates the meeting of Rama and his younger brother Bharata after the return of the former after 14 years of exile. It is celebrated during October to November, a day after the festival of Vijayadashami. Kashi Naresh attends this festival in his regal attire. The festival attracts a large number of devotees. Ganga Mahotsav is a five-day music festival organized by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, held in November to December. It culminates a day before Kartik Poornima, also called the Ganges festival. On this occasion the Ganges is attended by thousands of pilgrims, release lighted lamps to float in the river from the ghats. The primary Muslim festivals celebrated annually in the city are the ld-ul-fitr' (Ramzan), Bakrid, Shab-e-Barat, Bara Wafat, and Muharram. Additional festivals include Alvida and Chehlum. A non-religious festival observed by Muslims is Ghazi-miyan-ka-byaha ("the marriage of Ghazi Miyan"). Basketball, cricket, and field hockey are popular sports in Varanasi. The main stadium in the city is the Sigra Stadium, also known as Dr. Sampurnanda Stadium, where first-class cricket matches are held. Local cricket matches are also played on the BHU Ground, Dr. Bheeem Rao Sports Complex. The Physical Education Faculty of Arts of BHU offers diploma courses in Sports Management, Sports Physiotherapy, Sports Psychology and Sports Journalism. Gymnastics is also popular in Varanasi, and many Indian girls practice outdoors at the ghats in the mornings which hosts akharas, where "morning exercise, a dip in the Ganges and a visit to Lord Hanuman" forms a daily ritual. Despite concerns regarding water quality, two swimming clubs offer swimming lessons in the Ganges. The Varanasi District Chess Sports Association (VDCSA) is based in Varanasi, affiliated to the regional Uttar Pradesh Chess Sports Association (UPCSA). Varanasi other names are Benares or Banaras, Kashi and Mahadev ki Nagari. According to legend, Varanasi was founded by the god Shiva. The Pandavas, the mythic heroes of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, are said that he visited the city in quest of Shiva to atone for their sin of fratricide and Brahmanahatya that they had restricted during the climactic Kurukshetra War. It is believed as one of seven holy cities (Sapta Puri) which can provide Moksha; Ayodhya, Mathura, Gaya, Kasi, Karichi, Avantika, and Dvaravati are the seven cities known as the givers of liberation.   (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); The Ghats in Varanasi are world-renowned embankments made in steps of stone slabs along the river bank where pilgrims perform ritual ablutions. The ghats are an integral complement to the Hindu concept of divinity represented in physical, metaphysical, and supernatural elements. Varanasi has at least 84 Ghats, most of which are used for bathing by pilgrims and spiritually significant Hindu puja ceremony, while a few are used exclusively as Hindu cremation sites. Steps in the ghats lead to the banks of Ganges, including the Dashashwamedh Ghat, the Manikarnika Ghat, the Panchganga Ghat, and the Harishchandra Ghat, where Hindus cremate their dead. Many ghats are associated with Hindu legends and several are now privately owned. Many of the ghats were constructed under the patronage of the Marathas, Shindes (Scindias), Holkars, Bhonsles, and Peshwas. Most are bathing ghats, while others are used as cremation sites. A morning boat ride on the Ganges across the ghats is a popular tourist attraction. The extensive stretches of ghats in Varanasi enhance the riverfront with a multitude of shrines, temples, and palaces built "tier on a tier above the water's edge". The Dashashwamedh Ghat is the main and probably the oldest ghat of Varanasi located on the Ganges, close to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It is believed that Brahma created this Ghat to welcome Shiva and sacrificed ten horses during the Dasa-Ashwamedha yajna performed there. Above and adjacent to this ghat, there are also temples dedicated to Sulatankesvara, Brahmesvara, Varahesvara, Abhaya Vinayaka, Ganga (the Ganges), and Bandi Devi, which are all important pilgrimage sites. A group of priests performs "Agni Pooja" (Sanskrit:"Worship of Fire") daily in the evening at this ghat as a dedication to Shiva, Ganga, Surya (Sun), Agni (Fire), and the entire universe. Special aartis are held on Tuesdays and on religious festivals. The Manikarnika Ghat is the Mahasmasana, the primary site for Hindu cremation in the city. Adjoining the ghat, there are raised platforms that are used for death anniversary rituals. According to a myth, it is said that an earring of Shiva or his wife Sati fell here. Fourth-century Gupta period inscriptions mention this Ghat. However, the current Ghat as a permanent riverside embankment was built in 1302 and has been renovated at least three times throughout its existence. The Jain Ghat: Varanasi is believed to the birthplace of Suparshvanatha (7th Tirthankara) and Parshvanatha (23rd Tirthankara). The Jain Ghat or Bachraj Ghat is a Jain Ghat and has three Jain Temples located on the banks of the River. It is believed that the Jain Maharajas used to own these ghats.Bachraj Ghat has three Jain temples near the river's banks and one they are a very ancient temple of Tirthankara Suparswanath. A medical institution is a health care institution imparting patient remedy with specialised medical and nursing personnel and clinical system. The exceptional-recognised form of clinic is the overall sanatorium, which commonly has an emergency branch to treat urgent health issues ranging from hearth and twist of fate victims to a heart attack. A district clinic generally is the major health care facility in its place, with massive numbers of beds for extensive care and further beds for patients who want long-term care. specialized hospitals consist of trauma centres, rehabilitation hospitals, kid's hospitals, seniors' (geriatric) hospitals, and hospitals for handling particular medical desires such as psychiatric treatment (see psychiatric sanatorium) and certain disorder classes. specialized hospitals can help reduce fitness care expenses in comparison to popular hospitals.   (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); Click to Post

However, the current Ghat as a permanent riverside embankment was built in 1302 and has been renovated at least three times throughout its existence.
