THE MOST IMPRESSIVE MOUNTAINS AND SNOWS IN THE CUSCO REGION
The mountains and snow-capped mountains in Cusco are considered sacred entities; They were and continue to be part of the Andean worldview, a being that protects nature that is why in ceremonies or rituals these sacred Apus are evoked. Like all over the world, high mountains are mystical, magical and religious elements.
Apu
APU, is a Quechua word and in the time of the Incas, they were represented by the high or snowy mountains that were beings in charge of giving and protecting life.
Next, we have a list of the mountains and snow-capped mountains in Cusco that you should know in one of our tours, going up, observing the beauty of the landscapes and photographing these wonders of nature:
1- The Apu Ausangate
This is the fifth highest mountain in Peru, it is called the "Creator of the Waters", because its glacial mass gives rise to the Sibinacocha lagoon, the second with the largest extension in Cusco, this in turn forms a series of wetlands that preserve the Andean flora and fauna. However, the water resource plays a fundamental role in the electrification of the region.
Location: It is located in the Andes mountain range, located about 100 kilometers southeast of the city of Cusco in a section called Cordillera de Vilcanota, corresponding to the Cusco region in Peru.
Ausangate altitude: The main peak of this mountain is 6,384 meters above sea level, with large lagoons with a luminous green / blue color.
Every year on the north side of Ausangate, the festival of Qoyllur Ritt'i (Quechua: "star snow") has been celebrated since time immemorial before the Corpus Christi festival, during which thousands of people make pilgrimages to the Lord of Quyllur Ritt'i. in the temple of Sinakara (painting done on a rock).
Tumblr media
2- The Salkantay Mountain
The snowy Salkantay is the highest peak in the Vilcabamba mountain range, part of the Peruvian Andes. It is the 6th highest snowy peak in Peru. It is considered the largest for its splendid isolation and the greatness of its two-headed mole, with the addition of being one of the mountains in this magnificent Andean region that present major technical problems on all sides.
On this tour you see beautiful Andean landscapes, you pass a 5000 meter pass and you have the possibility of observing Condors and Alpacas in their natural habitat. Salkantay is a high, steep peak, the most spectacular peak in the region, with great vertical relief, particularly over the low valleys to the north that are tributaries of the Amazon River.
Location: It is located in the Cusco region 60 km (40 mi) West - Northwest of the city of Cusco.
Altitude: The "Salkantay" mountain is the tutelary Apu of Cusco with 6271 meters of altitude.
Difficulty: Although the difficulty of this Trek is slightly higher than that of the Inca Trail tour, it is not a high-level Trek either. Indeed, it is longer (5 days instead of 4), higher, wilder, but that is where we find the mesmerizing charm of this place. The Salkantay excursion was recently named by National Geographic Adventure Travel magazine among the best 25 excursions in the world.
Tumblr media
3- Vinicunca - "Rainbow Mountain" or "Rainbow Mountain"
This unique and beautiful mountain of the Peruvian Andes whose peculiarity is the amount of colors on its surface, due to minerals and different types of rock, its charm is on the surface, therefore it is not allowed to walk on it, for a matter of conservation, to observe it in all its glory and see the majesty of said mountain.
Tumblr media
Location: It is located in the province of Canchis. To visit it you have to get to a town called Pitumarca, which is about two hours from the city of Cusco, by car.
Altitude: The maximum height is 5200 meters above sea level.
Difficulty: It has MEDIUM difficulty, with a duration of 2 hours (ascent) at an average pace, this path requires an acceptable physical condition because the route includes slightly steep ascents and plains that ascend progressively.
4- The snowy Humantay
This snow-capped mountain is also a very special place, since, when part of the snow melted at its summit, a beautiful lagoon with the same name was formed at its base, a mystical jewel, it is really a hike worth doing.
When making an expedition of this caliber, it is advisable to make sure that you are properly prepared so that you can fully enjoy this great walk towards the Humantay lagoon.
Tumblr media
Location: Located in the Vilcabamba mountain range, at the foot of the Humantay mountain, is the fascinating lagoon of the same name.
Altitude: Located at an altitude of 5473 meters and the second highest in the Cusco region, which in recent years has become a destination for hikers who visit southern Peru.
