It’s like this. Ryan is used to being scared. He pushes himself into the depths of the hallways in his mind and keeps finding more doors, more corners to squeeze the fear into until he can push past it. There’s always more, more of the beige walls that aren’t quite gold, and the musty patterned carpet, and the fear that always finds places to hide. Until there isn’t. So Ryan makes more space. He breaks down the dead–end until he can just pull more out of himself. Get less sleep. Eat less food. Be less scared of the things that go bump in the night. 

He’s hitting a wall now. Breaking it. Pushing past it.

This week we celebrated our 100th round. That means we have been doing this long enough to have read 100 fics give or take since the founding of our sweet little club. This mod is honoured to be at the helm of a fun practice that has brought quite a few of us together and introduced us to some great titles. In celebration, we decided to host a Renaissance Round. This meant, we wanted nominations from any of the first 31 reads we've done as a club and would you believe it? The members voted in the very first fic we ever read as a club.

Made it so Far in Time by addandsubtract

This is one of those true underrated classics. Written in 2018 Buzzfeed era but so prescient with characterisation, many of the members couldn't help picturing 2022!Ryan with the above pictured Shane in college. Time-travel really gave us a gift and this fic gave us all we needed for a world where the guy in this photo meets a Ryan who already knows him.

Summary: “I’m, uh. I’m pretty sure the you I’m friends with is older,” Ryan says, and then winces.

Book Club Thoughts

i appreciate, as well, that if anyone's going to end up with this weird time travel situation and just roll with it, it would be them. like yeah, ryan could freak out, but shane is there which is a calming factor. and shane's brain is probably just frozen (both by what's happening and by the hot guy who just woke up in his room)

I would love to read a Shane pov of this. And how this changes everything

What fascinates me throughout the fic is how much less guarded college Shane is

this fic is so cute and good I want to just hold it in my mouth

I love the plot twist of Shane actually caring about Ryan a lot, because with time travel scenarios you think "oh he probably forgot about this" but here we have Shane in deep very much in love with Ryan for 10 years maybe more

so much of the hindsight of their situation is muted behind what Shane doesn't say in these scenes but his body language is explosive with years of pining and dashed hopes

Also imagine being like 20 and losing your vcard to a 28 year old Ryan bergara

what i thought was so interesting was that young!shane was kind of a chill cool dude, like the early versions of shane characterization in the fandom, while the fully fledged adult shane was much closer to how we now characterize him

kinda!! it lives in my head and in the tags of a few posts but basically i love the sallie house and i think it's neat that the kitchen cabinets have hearts on them. and like look at them the first time they're there. they look so cute in that little living room.

like imagine if they weren't there because of ghosts and demons and instead they looked at that little house in little atchison kansas and thought it could be their home. maybe it needs some work but maybe so do they. but there's space to live and space to grow (nursery upstairs) and like. this is Their place now!!! i just love it.

it isn't me

Ryan awoke with a start, gasping. He sat up and reached over to click on the lantern, eyes scanning the tent quickly. Everything was where it had been when they'd turned the light out. Shane was tucked into the sleeping bag next to him, lashes fanned against his cheeks as he dozed. Ryan watched his chest rise and his breath leave in a light steam from his slightly parted lips.

Fuck it was cold.

The man sighed and pulled his coat tighter around him, rubbing his hands together. Whatever had woken him up still had his heart pounding, but the sleep in his mind was slowly pulling him back into relaxation. He scanned the tent one more time, not so much as a bug catching his eye, before sliding back into the welcoming warmth of his cocoon of blankets. His eyes slid closed and he took a deep, steadying breath.

Then he heard it. A piercing wail in the night, clearly bovine. It reminded Ryan of the way a cow would cry after losing her baby. This time, he heard the horses shuffle and wicker nearby, like they were getting anxious. 

His initial freeze of terror led him to sitting back up, throat clicking with a dry swallow. He nudged Shane.

“Sh.. Shane,” Ryan said softly. Shane’s eyes tightened and he frowned slightly, rolling away further. Ryan bit his lip and shook him this time, making him grumble and open an eye partially to look at his partner. “Something's not right,” Ryan said quietly, pleading. “I heard one of the cattle scream.” Shane snorted and tucked himself in further.

“Well get your gun and go. Prolly a wolf.” he muttered. Ryan swallowed again and looked over at the rifles along the side of the tent. He sat a second, then heard the crying sound again. 

With a sigh and a nod, he grabbed the gun that had slowly become a familiar weight in his hand. He still had yet to actually hit anything with it, but the shooting lessons were getting him used to the kickback at least. If anything, it would scare a wolf off at the very least.

He stumbled out of the tent in his long johns, zipping it up after him in a practiced movement. Moonlight bathed the field, illuminating everything in front of him. The horses remained hitched nearby, eyeing and huffing at Ryan as he had appeared. The cattle, as usual, remained down the hill in their great huddle. The man stood at the top of the hill, looking over them. He was tempted to say he didn't see anything and crawl back into the tent, back into the safety of his blankets and Shane. 

It still felt stupid to rely on him like that, but it was getting easier.

The cold began creeping into his jacket and he huffed, steam escaping him. “God, fuck this,” he muttered, holding the rifle sideways in front of him and beginning his descent to the herd.

He didn't hear the scream again, which would have made him think he was imagining things if the cattle hadn't begun fidgeting. They bayed and stomped in their huddle as Ryan approached, but parted easily as the man whistled to scatter them and walked into the crowd.

He kept his eyes moving as he walked slowly, counting and making sure he could see each cow he passed well enough to determine they were fine. As the number rose, and the cold sunk into his fingertips, he found himself getting annoyed. It was always like him to get freaked out over nothing. Coming to the mountains had been a dumbass decision on his part, like he didn't have enough problems in his life without-

The last of the herd took off, leaving Ryan about ten yards from something flopped in the long grass. Steam billowed off of it in the frozen air. Ryan was stock still, listening intently to the distinct sound of… squelching. The mass - a cow, apparently - shuddered, a low pitiful groan escaping it.

Something growled and Ryan heard snapping, like sticks breaking, followed by a disgusting barrage of wet. He felt bile rise in his throat as the comparison to raw beef being pulverized came to mind.

Slowly, carefully, he raised his rifle against his shoulder and stepped closer. It was too late for this cow, but he could take out the predator if he didn't spook it.

Tense moments passed as he willed his breathing to remain steady, the chill of the air and adrenaline making his arms ache and shudder lightly.

Eight yards, then six. He swallowed hard and cocked his gun.

The creature tearing into the bovine froze. He closed his eyes hard once then opened them again, chastising the way he should have readied the rifle before he'd even descended the hill. 

Slowly, it rose its head. 

First, Ryan noticed the distinct lack of fur. 

Second, the round human-like head. 

Third, the horrific too-wide fanged mouth.

Fourth…

“Sh-Shane?” Ryan all but squeaked, his rifle slowly falling.

Shane smiled, fangs lacing together. If Ryan hadn't spent every waking hour of the last month thinking about the slope of his nose and the crinkle of his eyes, he wouldn't be able to recognize him under the sheer amount of blood. But… it was Shane, naked, feasting on a barely-living cow.

Shane slowly rose to his feet, suddenly too tall, too thin, too… supernatural.

Ryan clutched his rifle, forgetting it was a weapon, his eyes wide and mouth agape as he followed the movement. A sick, wrong sound emerged from Not-Shane, almost like a chuckle.

“Ryyyy-aaaaan…” it sang, muscles tensing as he hunched forward. Distantly, the man knew it was preparing to attack, but he couldn't get himself to react, to breathe, to anything.

“Ryan!” Shane shouted, the distinct thump of boots running on hard soil ripping him out of his fear. Ryan raised his rifle as Not-Shane turned and crouched, pouncing off towards the treeline.

A shot in the dark, literally. A squeal as it stumbled through the grass, pausing so briefly before it continued to sprint off.

Shane came up beside him, panting and staring after the creature. Ryan was shaking like a leaf, rifle still posed.

“I-I-I f-fucking shot it,” he breathed. Big, comforting, familiar hands carefully placed themselves over his, slowly pushing the gun down and clicking the safety on.

“Ry, Ry, look at me- fuck, what was that-”

And it all went dark.

He sighs, looks out of the window again. “Yeah,” Shane’s lips are a thin line. “Was fucked up what happened, no? Weird safety car situation. I’ve got to say I didn’t really get how it all—” “I really don’t want to talk about it."

shane wins the 2021 World Driver's Championship after a controversial race. he can't really speak to ryan afterwards, too busy getting dragged left and right for interviews and photos. luck has it that abu dhabi is small enough to run into each other.

for Comment on a WIP square i went with: Wildfire by Neostone138, a single chapter WIP that has some demon trickster shane and a whole lot of intrigue! while only one chapter i am captivated by the characterization and the ending was my favorite

for Newest Fic in a Chosen Tag: Tasty Snack by Impala_Chick this was a fic i didn't expect to like so much but god it was so funny. that crack tag really delivered! i'm personally weirdly picky with outsider POV, so i was surprised with how much i liked it in this fic! it's a testament to how good the writing is tho im not surprised bc i do love Impala_Chick's works 🫶🏽 also the ryan thirst is real in this fic as it literally should be

for Alternate Universe: estranged producer by Anonymous which was super hot and very fun! sugar baby ryan and daddy shane and you bet your ass ryan was sugaring! i hope this author continues to share their lovely ideas with us because this was BRILLIANT

Re-read A Fave Fic And Comment (Again): I told my demons about you (they told me to get therapy) by Ren_Saxon, WAAAA i love love love this fic! the whole collection is filled with amazing fics but i love this one bc it just... so chaotic! i love down bad ryan and he's losing it over it and GOOD FOR HIM. it's just so funny ren ilysm ur so good at writing baby 🫶🏽

Live streamer Shane and ghost hunter Ryan shyan au moodboard

Shane’s a live streamer who mainly does ghost debunking content about clearly fake videos found on the internet and plays games here and there. Ryan makes ghost hunting content. When a viewer requests Shane to look into Ryan’s content he’s pleasantly surprised that Ryan doesn’t obviously fake anything but he’s still not convinced it’s ghosts either. When Ryan sees he complimented his content they connect and decide to collab. They do a few streams together where they joke and laugh at the faked ghost content and argue about others and then finally Ryan talks him into going on a hunt with him. Shane never budges on not believing in the paranormal but he does realize he loves hanging out with Ryan so they collab more and more often and start hanging out outside of the content too. Shane cannot believe he’s actually falling for someone who seriously believes in ghosts.

2024 was a ... slow writing year. While we all have fallow periods, this was not so much a choice. I had some family strife through the summer and some friends going through some stuff as well, and it all conspired to keep me from writing as much or as often as I would have liked.

We've come back after the holidays and wanted to reflect on the past year 2023, so the theme we chose was "Any fic published in 2023!" and what do you know, we chose a very special fic called The Call of the Forest by ÉcrivainFantôme

We love an AU in the book club and we love even more when the premise has them developing a slow little romance over the radio waves deep in the forests.

Summary:

If you’d have asked Shane five years ago what his five-year plan was, he’d have had a very different answer to the one he's living now. Today, Shane starts his first summer as a fire lookout in California. He's miles and miles away from civilization, and the closest person to his lookout tower is a strange man who keeps asking him questions about Bigfoot.

But, like The Rolling Stones say, "You can't always get what you want", but Shane sure hopes he'll get what he needs.

Book Club Thoughts

Firewatch is one of my favorite shorter video games and I'm sooooooo thrilled to have a shyan take on it It was the details that counted for me. The solitude Shane experiences that feels comforting to someone who loves being alone and then there is always that feeling when you first speak to someone and they just shake up your world Okay but this fic has so many good things.... I love how [the author] weaved in the canon of Ryan hunting for cryptids/ghosts and Shane being a skeptic normally, i like to take notes during the live reads (if i remember to), but this week, all i wrote was "That Anne of Green Gables ass moment where they freak themselves out discussing a true crime event" there's something to the like, manufactured intimacy of talking to each other over a private radio channel and sharing that sort of mundanity with someone who you don't really know The way intimacy is explored here so great. The lack of touch and physical presence, the isolation, makes it more intense for me

OR, Ryan knows only too well that being a Private Detective isn't as cool as it's all made out to be. His pursuit of a certain infamous criminal ends up solving more problems than it creates.

posting this one here as a belated apology to those who like the cinderella au.... the racing verse got in between. but i promise i'm still very much planning on finishing the cinderella au too. i reread the other chapters i've written for it and i'm just a little scared i can't write at the level i had when i was fully invested in that work (there are some lines in there like giiirl you wrote this? (impressed)) but i will try!

ohh okay hard to write rn is definitely racing heartbeats. i'm in a constant inner battle of i love how far i've come and i'm genuinely proud of myself and goddamn i want this to be over with. sometimes minutes after each other. it's been the cause of my writer's block for a while and now it's also the one fic i'm sooo excited about to write for and finish. the highest highs and lowest lows. a fic that took me a place i didn't know it would take me is this one. it's a cinderella au, modern times no magic. it's on hold until i finish racing heartbeats but recently i was stuck thinking about it for a while n i opened it and reread what i'd written for it so far. bro. what the fuck. i did not know how personal a fucking cinderella au fanfic could be for me. i unknowingly stabbed myself right open and bled and bled and then made words with my insides. i analysed my soul without knowing it. it comes close to me. and all of that... i didn't really know until i just reread it. it's absolutely wild what that fic has done to me and what it says about me. i mean, to a degree it's all hidden under a safe layer of fictional characters and fictional settings and fun and games on the side. but there are some lines in there that brought me back to situations of my own that weren't so nice. so yea. unconscious therapy maybe.

🪄what is your post-writing/sharing aftercare? How do you take care of yourself or celebrate yourself when you've finished a fic?

hahah this is soo cute to read, i never really thought about it until i started typing this out. i don't have a routine of sorts, but usually after posting a fic i close off sooo much and try to go for a walk or focus on something else and then when i come back i hope maybe one person read it and left a nice comment. i love walking my dog after writing in general too, bc i'll be talking to myself out loud about where my silly little characters have gone and what my plans are for them. it's a great brainstorming tactic too, gets me thinking of other 'oh what about this!'s too. so, yeah, some time for myself but mostly a walk really helps!
