this got. really long, really fast. because i love writing about these kinds of things, so. they’re answered under the cut. <3

who is the most affectionate?

- until they start dating, kokichi is probably more affectionate when it comes to flirting and gestures because kaito wouldn’t want to rush into anything while they’re just building trust. 

- kaito would probably be more affectionate in consistent, small ways, like listening to him and taking what he says at face value unless kokichi is trying to get him to think, so he can build trust. he also definitely spends a lot of time with him alone, just to get away from the others for a bit and to spend time building that trust up. he likes that he doesn’t have to wear a mask with kokichi.

- after, though, for canon kaito, he probably figures out what levels of affection are okay early on and makes sure he gets it. all. the. time. he doesn’t want kokichi to feel like he’s alone at all.

- for shy!kaito, he probably does a lot of the same things that he did before, just on a more obvious level, and he does his best to make sure kokichi feels loved and appreciated. but i can definitely see kokichi going out of his way to fluster him as well. 

who initiates the most handholding?

- kaito. both as a reminder that he’s not alone and when he gets overwhelmed by the people around him. for shy!kaito, that’s even more of an occurrence. 

who worries more for the other?

- kaito. the man was literally trying to get him to open up to him in-game while kokichi was self isolating, and that’s not going to stop after.

- however, i feel like when they get closer, kokichi will get more protective of kaito, just because he knows kaito tends to prioritize the wellbeing of his friends over himself.

who is more likely to ask for help?

- kaito, but i feel like they both have trouble asking for it for different reasons; kaito because he doesn’t prioritize himself as much as he should and struggles with it, and kokichi because he has issues with trusting others.

who is the one always losing the keys?

- kaito, because i can see kokichi having a designated spot for them and kaito does his best to put the keys there, but he’ll get absent-minded and put them down somewhere random, and they’ll both spend hours looking for them if he accidentally dropped them behind some furniture or in a spot that’s too high for kokichi to see.

who leaves little love notes for the other?

- i can definitely see kokichi leaving them behind as little pranks but they’re all little doodles on sticky notes with sappy captions because he has trouble verbalizing how he feels, and he just puts them in random places where kaito will find them.

- kaito definitely keeps all of them in a little box somewhere, and if he loses the box, he looks until he finds it again. 

who can’t sleep unless the other is there?

- kaito. for what i hope are obvious reasons. after a while, he doesn’t get nightmares that often, but sometimes he will, and it’s really reassuring to see kokichi curled up next to him. 

- for that reason, i think kokichi would leave little sticky notes on the nightstand if he gets up in the middle of the night telling him where he went so he can come find him. sometimes it’s a bit inconvenient, but he doesn’t mind that much.

who is more likely to propose to the other?

- honestly, for them i don’t think either one of them would necessarily propose- i think they would talk about it and then go out and buy rings together. kaito doesn’t want to spring anything on kokichi, and i think kokichi would probably (maybe not as much by then, but still) might be a little apprehensive about admitting he wants to spend his whole life with him.

- that and shy!kaito would probably have a hard time verbalizing it at all, so a conversation would better instead of a full-on proposal.

- they might still do mini-proposals, though. i can’t see kokichi passing up on the opportunity to do something like that. and shy!kaito would be really proud of himself for asking him, even if he already knew he’d say yes.

who introduced the other to their family first?

- i have. no idea what either of their real life families are like, so. umm.

- kaito taking kokichi stargazing *definitely* counts, though. space is his home, to a degree, and he’d love to ramble at him about all the different stars and their stories and the events in space that happened related to them.

- and kokichi telling kaito about dice would be bittersweet, but a really good bonding moment for both of them, i think.

- so probably kaito?

who is more likely to play with the other’s hair?

- oooooh. (this is one of my favorite things to do so. yeah.)

- i’d have to say kokichi? just because kaito keeps his hair tied back and i can definitely see him teasing him about the hair gel while he messes with it. and kaito would let him. kaito would definitely let his hair get long, too, unless he had to cut it for astronaut reasons.

- however, kaito definitely loves brushing kokichi’s hair. (and someone needs to re-dye kokichi’s tips every once in a while.)

who makes sure the other has meals/ stays hydrated?

-  they’d both be awful at it. they just would be. (although shy!kaito would probably be more reliable with it than canon kaito.)

- so when one of them realizes it’s been a while since he’s eaten, he finds the other one and they both have a meal or snack break. it starts before they leave danganronpa headquarters and then it just becomes a habit. 

- if they’re not around the other, they call or text.

who is more likely to stand up for the other?

- hands down, kaito. hands down. he won’t have anyone talk badly about kokichi, not after what they went through. shy!kaito is a bit more soft spoken about it, but he’s just as determined.

- however, kokichi definitely steps in when kaito is prioritizing other people too much and needs a break.

who is more likely to prepare a surprise for the other?

- kokichi more consistently does it with his sticky notes, but i think kaito would make sure to do something for kokichi every once in a while. 

- he also likes to prank him, but nothing bad. he doesn’t want to accidentally start a prank war he’s sure he’ll lose. that and he doesn’t want to break kokichi’s trust- he worked hard to earn it, and he’ll be damned if he loses it.

who makes the other pinky promise not to do things?

- kokichi. both as a combination of trust issues and because it’s something he would have done with dice. 

- however, kaito, especially shy!kaito, will do it occasionally, knowing kokichi sees pinky promises in a high regard, especially if he’s really anxious about something.

who puts a blanket over the other when they fall asleep on the couch?

- kaito. and it’s his coat, usually. (and for shy!kaito, that’s practically a declaration of love right there- his coat is one of the things that consistently got him through the game.)

- however, at first it probably is just a blanket- it’s too reminiscent of the press, and neither of them will get over that quickly. (and they probably break down crying when doing that doesn’t make either of them feel like kokichi is going to die. it’s really bittersweet, but it makes both of them happy.)

who is the most affectionate?

- it depends.

- for canon kaito, it's definitely kaito- in-game they're really affectionate with each other, and even if he is aware of his crush and internally panicking, i can't see that changing.

- for shy!kaito... well. in-game it's him, but as soon as they get out of the game? the man is going to be a *mess* and it's whoever works up the courage first. probably shuichi, though, honestly.

who initiates the handholding?

- again, whoever's feeling bravest.

- however, i think kaito uses it as a nonverbal way to signal when he needs something or isn't okay, so probably kaito.

who worries more for the other?

- no.

- well, with shy!kaito, no.

- with canon kaito, ...kaito? i still think they'd worry about each other quite a lot. especially since kaito has a past of not telling shuichi when he's not okay so he *doesn't* worry.

who is more likely to ask for help?

- shuichi, i think. both as an an excuse to spend time with and check up on kaito, and for genuinely needing help. kaito needs practice, especially since he was probably the most honest with kokichi out of everyone, and that's because of the hangar.

- he doesn't have trust issues, but he's definitely worried about worrying everyone, and he also tries to pretend he hasn't changed much, especially right after the game, so shuichi has to work through that more than anything else.

who is the one always losing the keys?

- yes.

- they both have multiple spare copies. and manage to lose the copies. so they're always finding and losing keys and not remembering what key goes to what thing. it's chaos.

- other people also find keys when they come to their house. again, chaos.

who leaves little love notes for the other?

- shuichi writes kaito poetry. and it'll take him a bit, but then he slides it over to kaito, and kaito reads it, and shuichi always gets some form of physical affection right after.

- with shy!kaito, he definitely probably cries a little a couple times, and it more than likely just ends in them cuddling.

who can't sleep unless the other is there?

- shuichi. that rocket ship haunts his dreams, and kaito's post game asthma is something that is always at the back of his mind.

who is more likely to propose to the other?

- they would both be nervous as hell about it, but canon kaito probably proposes.

- with shy!kaito? i wouldn't be surprised if it took lots of emotional support from friends and/or an intervention on his side. but they would both want to, and i think it would end up being shuichi.

who introduced the other to their family first?

- again. stargazing.

- i'm just imagining shuichi introducing kaito to all of his favorite mysteries from when he was a kid and talking about them and making sure to avoid mentions of ghosts and gods, this is adorable.

who is more likely to play with the other's hair?

- my answer to this. is rantaro.

- and it's because i can just imagine shuichi and rantaro being friends, and kaito grows his hair out. so rantaro braids it like he would his sisters' hair. and kaito always adores it, and shuichi thinks he looks great.

- if it's just saimota though, probably shuichi because kaito loves it when he plays with his hair. it makes him feel all warm and tingly.

who makes sure the other has meals/ stays hydrated?

- i also think they would remind the other when they hadn't eaten because they are both awful at this.

- however.

- surprisingly enough, i think it would be shuichi. just because it's him being a workaholic over kaito's lifelong hyperfixation with space.

- is this controversial? does it not quite fit with kaito worrying about others like crazy? probably.

- but again. kaito. and space. even in the love suite, shuichi can't compete with space. i rest my case. (i mean, he can, but he still doesn't quite win out.)

who is more likely to stand up to anyone for the other?

- i. don't know?

- i can see both of them defending the other potentially to the death (chapter four trial excluded, just look at chapter five) so i really. don't know?

- they even challenge each other on their own problems to help each other.

- it's probably even.

- but in shy!kaito's case, probably shuichi. maybe. this is still debatable.

who is the most likely to prepare a surprise for the other?

- they both work a lot, so it's probably even.

- kaito likes to surprise shuichi after he comes home from work if he's been at home. the kitchen might occasionally be destroyed, but he does his best. (also, neither of them can cook. they've tried. it doesn't work. you have a daydreaming adhd astronaut and a constantly overthinking detective trying to cook. just. no.)

- and shuichi definitely likes surprising kaito with blanket forts and fairy lights when he comes home from long astronaut trips. this is a guilty pleasure of kaito's, but shuichi really enjoys them, too.

who makes the other pinky promise not to do things?

- kaito. kaito, kaito, kaito.

who puts a blanket over the other when they fall asleep on the couch?

- it happens so often to shuichi that kaito has it down to a science. tuck him in with a blanket, gently lift his head for a pillow, avoid getting pulled in for cuddles, and put a glass of water and some snacks next to him in case he wakes up, along with a little note.

Kaito caught his coat from Kokichi's throw and carefully slipped his left arm into it and positioned it on his right shoulder. He considered lying about his nerves, but it was Kokichi- he'd seen the most of his true self more than anyone else in the game, and he couldn't lie to him anyways. He'd just omit a couple things- he didn't need to know about his crush.

"I'm n-nervous because this is m-me, not who I w-was in the g-g-game." Kaito winced a bit at the severity of his stutter on the word game. "I w-wouldn't lie to y-you anyways. But my c-coat helps me pretend I'm st-still that person, y'know? The o-others n-need a h-hero, and s-so do I, so I k-keep pretending." He didn't mind Kokichi knowing it was all an act- Kokichi was constantly acting, too, just like they had both done in the game. He wanted someone he could be honest with.

Besides, they were partners. Even if they weren't working together anymore, the time they had spent together in the hangar made Kaito sure he could trust him. "B-besides, I kn-know you- you wouldn't str-strangle me. I tr-trust you."

Kokichi flashed a deceivingly innocent smile. "Me? Steal from you? No! You totally just lost it." ( for Kaito / @somemindsatwork )

Kaito stared down at him, struggling to keep his gaze. "N-no, I know I d-didn't lose it. I had it here, and then I t-turned around, and y-you were there, and my c-coat was gone."

Internally, he wondered why Kokichi had stolen his coat in the first place- could he be taking it to wear? Kaito didn't mind that, not really, but it helped him gather a bit of courage and helped him pretend like he was still the same person he was in the game around the others. They needed Kaito like they had needed Shuichi. And so he gave it to them.

"I'm not m-mad. Just, pl-please give it back?" He rubbed the back of his head and finally stopped looking at Kokichi, staring down at his slippers instead.

Kaito smiled at him, trying not to blush. His hair was still down- he'd been resting in his room all day, and he hadn't put his coat on yet, either. "O-of course I'm g-gonna try one."

Despite the very real possibility of it being a prank, this was a good opportunity for him to build trust with Kokichi and to show him that he trusted him back. And even if it was a prank, the cupcakes looked absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention, purple.

He took a cupcake and took a bite, not sure if it was a prank or not, but not really caring either way. It'd be worth it to see the grin on his face afterwards, especially since he caused it.
