Commentary: When Planning Area Beer Festivals, Consider Area Transport Modes
Blue Point’s annual Cask Festival is transit-accessible, but many other area beer festivals are not
Hey, New York-area beer festivals: we need to talk.
There have been several beer festivals I’ve wanted to attend this year that were held within 30 miles of Manhattan. But you wouldn’t know that they were held so close to New York City, which is a city of more than eight million people where more than half the population lacks access to a car and relies on public transit. These particular festivals offered only driving directions to the venue on their event pages or websites, with no mention of transit — usually because their organizers chose venues that were nowhere near any reasonable public transit option. Some even boasted about the amount of free parking at the venue. But I, like literally millions of other people in the New York metro area, do not own a car. And even if I did, I wouldn’t choose to drive it to a beer festival, because that’s pretty damn irresponsible.
It’s kind of stunning that these events don’t offer realistic options for people that might not want to drive to a beer festival (or, more specifically, from a beer festival). And it would be fairly easy for the organizers of these festivals to do something about it. They could offer a ticket that includes charter bus transportation from a nearby commuter rail station — or even partner with a bar or brewery in New York City to run a shuttle (this was done for several years when Shmaltz Brewing would hold their festival at their brewery in Clifton Park, which is nearly three hours north of the city). They could partner with a rideshare company to offer free or discounted rides from their venue (this, of course, would require holding the fest in an area that’s reliably serviced by rideshare companies — something that cannot be said for some of these fests). They could choose venues with public transit access in mind (one upcoming beer festival is one-third of a mile from a commuter railroad station as the crow flies, but the only way to access the venue by foot requires a 40-minute walk on roads with no sidewalks).
Oh, you have a Designated Driver ticket option? Great. Entrusting people who attend a beer festival to designate a driver when no other transportation option exists seems totally safe! There are far too many people who can’t be trusted and should at least be offered another option. And what about people like me, who choose not to own a car? Imagine that conversation with a friend. “Hey, I don’t own a car, but you do. Can you drive me to a beer festival and then hang around a bunch of drunk people for three to four hours and then drive me home?” I’m sure that’ll go over like a lead balloon.
The next beer festival in our city’s suburbs that makes any attempt to address the fact that people would like options to access the festival by something other than private vehicle will immediately get my business. A few have made some effort, but it’s hard to even tell if it was intentional or just happenstance. One festival on Long Island this year made no mention of public transit as an option despite being on a frequent bus line and a 20-minute walk from LIRR. Another upcoming fest says they “strongly encourage rideshare,” but neglects to even mention that the venue is a 10-minute walk from an LIRR station. Ooh, so close!
Organizers of beer festivals shouldn’t just mention transit access — they should promote it as a benefit not just for people who don’t own cars, but for people who simply don’t want to drive to a beer festival (which should, honestly, not even be a thing). Leave the car at home! Be responsible! Don’t drink and drive! That should be the message anywhere, but especially in the New York metro area.

Day 15 - Grouse Mountain
It’s a strange sensation waking up on a marshmallow after two weeks of gravel and grass! I actually felt a bit jet lagged, but poor G had nightmares that my family had turned into a cult that she had to join and live with us in a big house! (I haven’t spoken to them for a while, so who knows!) And worse still, in the dream she then received a phone call to say her old dog had died. So in summary, don’t smash a small Dairy Queen before bed! Our troubles were soon forgotten as we headed off for some brunch in the form of poached eggs on waffles with maple syrup (me) and poached eggs with smoked salmon and avocado on sourdough toast (G) boujee! This was to be our fuel to get us up Grouse Mountain. Or at least to the bus stop, for the bus to get us up there!
We grabbed a scone from a smaller ‘Pure Bread’ as an emergency snack and headed to Canada place to catch a free shuttle that runs every 20 minutes. Turns out the most aggressive Canadians aren’t the ice hockey players, but the Vancouver coach drivers! I heard more honks in one return trip than I did from Megan the entire time! Once at Grouse Mountain with just a handful of cyclists stuck under the wheel arch, we picked up a map and took the 6 minute cable car up to the half way point(ish) where the main action takes place. One of the prime reasons for coming here was to see some bears as thus far the only grizzly thing we’d encounted was the weather! There was still no guarantee we’d see them as they had a spot inside for sleeping and lots of trees and bushes to hide away for snoozes in their habitat.
There are two bears here and this is their story: Grinder was orphaned on June 5th, 2001 in Invermere, British Columbia. His mother's disappearance remains a mystery; he was found wandering alone on a logging road, dehydrated, thin, weak and weighing only 4.5 kg. He was taken to a local veterinarian where he was given supportive care until he could be delivered to the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife.
Coola was discovered June 29th, 2001 at the side of a highway near Bella Coola, British Columbia. His mother had been Killed by a car. Her three cubs stayed with her until a Conservation Officer arrived Unfortunately, one cub did not survive; the second escaped and was never found again but the third cub, Coola, was rescued and brought to the Grouse Mountain Refuge where he thrives in the company of Grinder (a quite unfortunate name if he’s not a gay bear!)
Luck was on our side as the bears were out a strolling towards the spot where we were stood near the water, and they went for a splash around. They were comical to watch, moving around slowly and blowing bubbles in the water out of every orifice! G was quite surprised by just how big they were and not too disappointed that we didn’t come across any whilst on one of our romps as a two! It was a real highlight for me personally to see them, even if we did have to pay $80 for the privilege!
But we were going to get more bang for our buck than just the bears, as next up was the ‘world renowned’ lumberjack show! It was a cheesy affair with many a dad joke, but entertaining nonetheless as they demonstrated various skills including chopping with axes, axe throwing, chainsaw ‘art’, log climbing and log rolling. I dare say the lumberjacks were cringing more than us following the script, but the crowd cheered along all the same! Next up was a ‘birds in motion’, which is always a winner in my book! The last time we were at one for was for my birthday a mere 7 weeks prior and it rained the whole day, but today couldn’t have been more different, as the sun pounded down on us, feeling even hotter than ever due to the altitude.
Before the show started we spotted a few familiar faces including Mikhaela and Little Fingers, who I did fear for slightly as the first bird out was a rather peckish looking golden eagle! He was a young male, who didn’t yet have the distinct white plumage on top. After a few swoops and loops he returned home, making way for a peregrine falcon (mixed with a bigger falcon) that gave us a show of speed! The company that puts on the show has a few birds like this that they use for pest control at places like airports and beaches to reduce the number of pigeons and sea gulls as the smaller birds think that there’s a predator in the area and move on, bird brains! Next up was a hawk that not only flies, but runs along the ground and covers its dead prey with their wings to hide it from other predators. And rounding off the show was a grey owl who can hear the heart beat of a mouse from far away and fly without making a sound. What was as impressive as watching the birds in motion, was the back drop behind them. From fields, to woodland to mountains, like something out of a painting!
As brunch had sunk to our boots, it was time for a snack, a Canadian classic that I thought we might have missed the chance to try, a Beaver Tail! It’s a chain of places, that aren’t as common as we first thought, but there was a little shack on Grouse Mountain that had a couple of spotty teenagers serving up the works! A beaver tail is pretty much a battered donut in the shape of a beaver tail topped with something naughty. I opted for a white chocolate and toffee tail (and made a right mess whilst eating it) and G went for Oreo and vanilla. They were good, but I must admit I was expecting more. It’s possible that the quality wasn’t the best, as it sounded like the slightly older teenager was advising the other on what to do, but it didn’t stop us from wolfing ‘em down!
We went for a little stroll around the rest of the mountain, including the lake, which compared to most we’ve seen wasn’t all that impressive, but we could imagine how pretty it would be in winter as there were lots of fairy lights and statues dotted around the paths through out the forest. After a quick drinks break and a sticker purchase, our final activity was also included in our ticket, a ski lift up to the top of the mountain, which on a clear day you can see up to 800km away (I think) it was either 80 or 800! On our way up we caught another glimpse of the bears, taking a stroll around their enclosure, which was lucky as by the time we returned they were snoozing in the bushes. As it was a clear day we could see for miles and miles, from the city and its tall buildings and bridges, to the surrounding mountains and forests. We really did feel on top of the world and spent a bit of time just looking out, after our efforts to try and capture the grandeur on camera were futile!
Our plan was to finish Grouse Mountain with a spot of early dinner, but alas they didn’t have half the things on offer, including the beer for happy hour (I’ve not seen G so perplexed this whole trip!) so instead we took the shuttle back (complete with an equally erratic driver) showered up and headed out to another Jen recommended spot, Steamworks in Gastown, about a 15 minute walk from our hotel. It didn’t disappoint! We both had a burger and fries and probably could have had another (they were that good!) washed down with a couple pints of lager/cider. Instead of looking completely gluttonous and ordering a second burger, I risked a stout and chocolate tiramisu type thing, which G helped me out with as it was bloody huge! A few members of our G Adventures group had gone to a bar not too far from us, which 10 years ago we’d have probably made it to, but in the words of Ian Beale, Georgie had nothing left, except enough in the tank to stroll home and get in to that lovely soft big old bed!
Georgie’s highlight of the day: The bears of course!

January 7, 2024 - Charlottesville, VA
We rolled into Charlottesville, and I was hungry. This was half the length of Raleigh, and only a bit longer than Raleigh->Charlotte. I was happy to get out, and happy to get food.
I'd never been here, so I spent no shortage of time looking at Google Maps to figure out where we're eating. I had to plan a bit; someone was meeting me here!
(You should know, the advent of GPS and Google on our phones mean I watch Google Maps throughout my travels. I see the major cities as we pass them, I get my relative speed, and I can see the remaining duration, even without internet.)
Greensboro was along this route, back and forth. The last time I went to Greensboro was 2022, for the Junior Olympics. The rail line conveniently rolled within view of the university. I recognized a few buildings as we went by, as well as the graffiti. It was short-form nostalgia, and I found myself longing for that last little bit of peace. Traveling always felt "safe" in my old life. No time for Biscuitville, though, I was going to C-Ville.
Charlottesville is a unique stop on the ride: One rail, the Cardinal, heads out toward Chicago through West Virginia. It has better views and a shorter trip, if that was the direct route. A 16 hour ride wasn't worth the nice views, though, and I had people agreeing to meet me here and in Washington DC.
The other rail in Charlottesville is the Crescent, and it rolls through to Washington DC. That's the train I took out of Charlotte; it's interesting, because the two different sides of the train building go to two different rails.
I had to claim and re-check my bags for this one. I'd bought my Crescent ticket back in December, but I hadn't decided on Washington DC until soon before I left. See where it says "Northeast Regional Service?" That was me, too. I checked my two big bags onto the NERS train and walked out to...
See that bridge in the picture, out the window? In this case, the rail runs under the street. If I was going to get food, I was going to walk upstairs. With my injury, and my bags. The city sits up and away from the train station, which is a common trend: cities don't like being near the train. Why did trains fall out of fashion? Probably because they're noisy.
Lunch was with Daria, a local who I've been chatting with for months on Facebook. This would be our first meeting, and it would break the veil of "online only." That moment is always nervous, for me: Even though I believe I'm even better in person, I have a hard time believing I'll be liked until we meet.
We chatted nicely at the Miami Grill, where I had reserved my budget to spend freely. Was it like food in Miami? Only sort-of; I went to University of Miami, and dated a Cuban woman the whole time, and I can say with confidence that Charlottesville is not Miami. Still, the food was more familiar than not.
Daria was beautiful, and wonderful company. I didn't want to say goodbye when we were done, but I was flustered and feeling rough. I forgot a picture. All I have are memories.
Charlottesville is a college town, but it was still Winter Break there, so the town was especially dead. It was a weekend, too, so nothing was happening otherwise. CVS didn't let me put money onto my Cash App, either - that's important for Washington DC. But with nothing else going for me, I went back to waiting in the train station.
My NERS train was running late, so we sat around nervously. I remember one passenger asking if the Richmond connection was there yet, and I loudly remarked, "That's a loud one, you won't miss it." I thought he meant a train, but I was in luck. The shuttle-bus had a loose belt, and was screeching the whole time it sat in the parking lot. It WAS loud. Still, I heard one of the attendants remark, "It wasn't loud at all," when it pulled up. I haven't been able to forget my mistake.
Finally, the -reason- for the late NERS train went by. A freight train was running behind, and blew through the station thirty minutes after it should have. So an hour late, I was climbing onto my next trip. Only about three hours to DC; I hope it wouldn't be TOO late, I had a hostel room waiting for me. At least I was spending the night; I couldn't miss a connection.
This is how you board. It's out of the building and across the parking lot, and Amtrak announces which location is appropriate for coach. I crawled with my three bags out to this, and over to my coach boarding. They don't check tickets, you just climb on.
Next stop, Washington DC.

BTS Universe Timeline
» next
INTRODUCTION
The goal of this guide is to chronologically map the major plot points of BTS Universe (BU), a fictional transmedia narrative centered on the lives of seven young men who share names with the members portraying them. The complexity of the timeline is magnified by the time loops that begin and reset on 11 April Year 22, so careful attention will be given to tracing how the loops diverge from one another after that date. The guide will be published over multiple posts.
Most of the information in the timeline is drawn from the official English-version publications of The Notes: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life 1 and The Notes: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life 2 (hereafter shortened to Notes 1 and Notes 2). Other resources are referenced as necessary, including the Notes released with certain physical albums, the Save Me webtoon, the official BU content in the BTS Universe Story mobile game, and BU music videos/short films. Summaries from the album Notes are based on translations by twitter user @/origamifirefly. Character names are abbreviated in parentheses next to the print sources to indicate the perspective from which the original entries are written.
Dates are presented as they appear in the texts. The single or double-digit year number most likely corresponds with SeokJin’s age rather than a calendar year. (In Korea’s age-calculating system, everyone’s age increases by one year on January 1st regardless of when their birthday falls in the calendar.) There are enough clues scattered throughout the text to suggest that the characters’ ages reflect the real-life age differences of the members. For example, JungKook is five years younger than SeokJin; they overlap in high school because SeokJin is held back a grade after returning from the American school system. Ages that are explicitly stated in official sources will be included in the timeline whenever possible.
BTS Universe deals with many difficult and potentially triggering themes, so please read the content warning in the Timeline Guide before proceeding. The Guide section will be included on all future posts for quick reference.
TIMELINE GUIDE
Content warning: contains references to death, suicide, suicidal ideation, child abuse, domestic violence, blood, homicide, depression, trauma, PTSD
This guide contains major spoilers from all BU media
Revisions and additions will be made as necessary, so please visit the original post for the most up-to-date version (update log is included at bottom of post)
All names are provided as fully as known
Bracketed dates are inferred or calculated from references in the text
While the timeline is presented here as objectively as possible, I acknowledge that there is a level of subjectivity in choosing which information is significant enough for inclusion and in certain connections drawn between entries
Please inform me of any suspected errors; I will investigate and correct them

Shadows of Our Childhoods
- Beginning through Year 18 -
[Year 9]
Jung HoSeok (age 7) is abandoned by his mother at an amusement park and moves into an orphanage. His age is referenced in his 31 May Year 22 entry from Notes: Her.
The earliest entry of the Notes published so far is HoSeok’s 30 August Year 9 (Notes: 7). Some older boys wake him up at night, and he reluctantly sneaks up to the rooftop with them. Fireworks explode in the sky. HoSeok is shocked at first and then entranced. The older boys tease him for crying, but he can’t stop the tears.
Note: It’s reasonable to assume that this unidentified rooftop location is the orphanage HoSeok grows up in. Therefore, his mother left him sometime before 30 August—possibly that summer, due to his unexplained tears.
10 October Year 9 Notes 1 (SJ)
Kim SeokJin (age 9) runs away from school with a friend to protect him from men who want to use him as leverage to get money from his father, Mr. Choi, who disappeared after his company shut down. SeokJin tries to hide the friend in his room at home, but his father, Kim ChangJun, arrives with one of the men and allows him to take the boy away. ChangJun tells SeokJin to be a “good kid.” The friend never returns to school.
Note: SeokJin’s age is specified in BTS Universe Story: The Boy on the Threshold, ep.3.
28 February Year 10 Notes: 7 (TH)
Kim TaeHyung encounters an older boy feeding the dog that he frequently plays with outside of the supermarket. He tells the boy that when his father earns a lot of money and moves their family into a big house, he can take the dog and raise him. After TaeHyung presses him a second time, the boy reveals that his name is Kim SeokJin.
23 July Year 10 Notes 1 (HS)
While counting in front of his class, HoSeok recalls the day at the amusement park when his mother handed him a chocolate bar and told him to close his eyes and count to ten. He feels like she will never come looking for him if he finishes counting to ten, and then he collapses.
Note: His mother abandoned him at the amusement park when he was seven (Year 9).
29 December Year 10 Notes 1 (TH)
TaeHyung’s father returns home drunk and disheveled after an absence and abuses him for the first time.
6 April Year 11 Related post: The Arboretum Notes 1 (JM)
Park JiMin (age 8) visits the Grass Flower Arboretum on a school picnic day. While his classmates are all accompanied by their mothers, his own parents are too busy to make it. At the end of the trip, he ignores his teacher’s call to wait and tries to walk home alone. With only his backpack in hand, he is caught in a torrential downpour and seeks shelter in a small warehouse near the back gate. JiMin wakes up in a hospital after he is found unconscious in the arboretum with no memory of what happened. He develops seizures as a result of this unnamed trauma and is frequently hospitalized as he grows up.
Note: This day is also referenced in his entries for 11 May, 19 May, and 4 July of Year 22; the lattermost specifies his age.
Notes 2 (JM)
JiMin reflects on what really transpired at the arboretum in his 12 August Year 22 entry, which also reveals that his memory returned due to a chance encounter on 15 September Year 20. Inside the dark and cluttered warehouse, young JiMin falls asleep and is awoken by an iron door clanging shut and the sound of someone breathing. He discovers an interior room and creeps closer. A small, pale hand appears on the other side, startling him. Someone whistles outside and opens the warehouse door. He hides under a desk and watches a man enter the interior room. Through the man’s legs, JiMin can see a small boy lying on the floor with bruised arms and legs and scars on his wrists from being tied up too long. Their eyes briefly meet. JiMin senses that he is asking for help. The man turns around, and the boy stabs his thigh with a boxcutter before he notices JiMin hiding. The man disarms the boy and slams the door shut. JiMin escapes the warehouse under the cover of the violent noises within. No one is around to help. He runs through the pouring rain and mud, frequently falling and scraping his knees. He collapses at the back gate with an image of the boy’s bleeding hand in his mind. He wakes up at the hospital surrounded by his parents, a doctor, and a nurse. They question him about what happened, but JiMin does not remember.
Note: In the same 12 August Year 22 entry, JiMin explains that he conducted research online into the incident. He learned that the boy’s family name is Choi, he was five at the time, and he was discovered near Hwayong Mountain on April 10 suffering from temporary amnesia caused by shock. JiMin could not find any follow-up articles on the police investigation. Additionally, he reveals the real cause of his seizure at the bus stop on 15 September Year 20: he saw the same boy in the window of the Grass Flower Arboretum shuttle bus. “His empty eyes no longer spoke” to JiMin.
21 July Year 12 Notes 1 (SJ)
After his mother’s death, SeokJin is sent by his father to live with his maternal grandmother in the U.S. (The city is specified as Los Angeles in his 1 February Year 22 entry from Notes: 7.) His father breaks his promise to see him off at the airport.
30 September Year 12 Notes: 7 (JK)
Jeon JungKook (age 7) slips through a crowd of people surrounding a massive sinkhole, wanting to see what’s inside of it. Dirt crumbles beneath his sneaker and he almost loses his balance at the edge. When he steps back, he sees something that is both like a light and another hole inside the hole.
Note: Compare to his Notes 2 Epilogue, XX XX Year XX, when he sees a bottomless hole below and the moon (or “a big hole in the sky”) above where he floats.
[Winter Year 12] Notes 1 (JK)
JungKook (age 7) overhears his father telling his mother that the world “was too heavy for him to bear” and that there’s nothing he can do for JungKook.” He leaves their family forever.
Note: I calculated this season/year from his 11 September Year 17 entry, in which JungKook has waited ten days to receive a birthday card from his father; he has four cards saved in a drawer. (This also matches his real-life age difference with Jin.) He reflects on his father leaving him during the winter when he was 7 years old. He believes: “I was the world that was too heavy for him to bear—that world that he gave up on. A child who can never be the reason to endure it all. That was me.”
21 May Year 15 Notes: 7 (NJ)
Kim NamJoon returns home late from playing with his friends. The house is unusually dark and empty, giving him a chilling sense of foreboding. The phone rings and he senses that if he answers it, his life will forever change.
Note: It is likely that this is one of the times, if not the first time, his father is hospitalized due to a serious illness. About a year later, in his 21 June Year 16 entry of Notes 1, NamJoon describes how he coaxed his boss to hire a middle school student to post flyers. His family struggles financially with his father’s hospital bills and their overdue utilities.
19 September Year 16 Notes 1 (YG)
Min YoonGi arrives home and finds it devoured by flames. Frozen, he thinks of his mom and watches the house collapse. A neighbor asks him if his mom is inside, and he answers “no” without thinking. YoonGi’s mother dies in the fire.
Note: Some people suspect that YoonGi’s mother set the fire deliberately. In episode 6 of the Save Me webtoon, YoonGi recalls his father warning him against pursuing music unless he wants to “go crazy and kill [himself] like [his] mom did.”
2 May Year 18 Notes: Persona (NJ)
NamJoon and his father return home from the hospital to see the family’s belongings piled outside. They were evicted after his younger brother NamHyeon got in a fight with the landlord’s son who came to collect their overdue rent. The owner of the local supermarket allows them to move into its storage room. Exhausted, NamJoon snaps when his mother frets and asks where his brother is. The supermarket owner gives him a can of beer. In a later Notes 2 entry, he reflects that he was probably 16 at the time.
Note: On 18 June Year 22 in the Notes 2 timeline, NamJoon recounts this story to SeokJin at a street pub as a preface to asking when SeokJin drank alcohol for the first time, testing his memory.

schedule self para / on the way to bc family concert rehearsals
taejin’s talks with his manager — a cheeky glimpse into their tit for tat banter in the early hours of the morning warnings / smoking tw wc / 415
“do you want to tell me who’s idea it was to schedule so many concerts back to back to back?” taejin’s voice is stark, etched with a layer of annoyance inside the early hours of seoul. he’s already sitting back on the bus, clad in the sweats leaving him to rehearsals for the day. his manager sits up front, glasses askew — taejin already knows what expression’s painted on by now.
“bc entertainment. who else would it be? you only have that company to blame.” a snarky response, and he’d expect nothing less than the person who knows him better than anyone else by now. a near decade, and taejin’s seen his manager through each and every tireless schedule, jetsetting from one country to the next, shuttling him to and forth.
(he’s always grateful for his manager).
“why would bc think a family concert and a string of titan concerts would be a good idea?”
“most bang for your buck — sometimes your fans don’t show up to the bc ones because the only ones they’re interested in is titan.”
touche, and concession begins when taejin starts to lean back on his chair, tossing his arms to his side. eyes closed, feeling the waves of the car moving.
“kim taejin, you’re ten years into your career and you’re asking stupid questions. go take a cigarette break because who knows when you’ll get one when you enter rehearsals.”
it pains his pride, in the ironic sort of i-don’t-want-to-admit-you’re-right way. but he’s already waved the white flag high and large in the air, slipping out his pack of esse’s and drawing a light to the end of the thin stick. one inhale, and by the time on the exhale, he stares in the front view mirror. “that’s one thing i do envy about your job — you’re able to smoke wherever without the worry of sasaengs coming into your view.”
“if we’re being honest, i can’t let sasaengs get a sight of me smoking or else they’ll petition bc to fire me for being a bad influence on you. you know, it’d ruin your pretty boy image. additionally, i technically can’t smoke when you’re on stage — i have to monitor you.”
“are you always so clear-headed in the mornings?”
his manager laughs, cracking open the window by an inch before taejin takes another inhale of the cigarette. morning talks, and he’s never won one battle against the man he considers his best friend.

June in Reykjavík - 17.06
(for a nice reading experience, listen to this song while reading!)
A cool rush of sulphur filled air engulfed Emil as he stepped off the plane and down the steps to the runway where he waited for the shuttle bus to the terminal with the rest of the mix both of tourists and his own citezens who had been on his flight from London Gatwick to Keflavík. Once inside the bus the exited bubble of chatter in all sort of languages grew as they neared the terminal.
Usually a man of reserved expression, Emil couldn't help walk with a spring in his step as he pulled his suitcase behind him as he stepped off the bus and approached the customs desk. The attendant recognised him and gave a shy smile.
"Velkomin heim, Mr Ísland." she said as she handed his passport back to him after stamping it, and Emil's heart sang at hearing his language glide over her tongue as she welcomed him home.
He nodded to her in thanks then slipped through the gate and followed the signs for the airport car park. A few of the other airport staff recognised him as he walked through the corridors, and he nodded at them and smiled as he always did, the happiest when among his people.
Once at his car where he'd left it parked three days earlier, Emil unlocked it with the push of a button, slung his suitcase onto the back seats and slid into the driver's seat.
He sung along to Hjaltalín as they played on the radio as he drove along the long road away from Keflavík and towards Reykjavík. The windows were down and the wind blew through his hair making a mess, but he couldn't care less as the June sunshine warmed the breeze.
Soon he was on the 40 road, and the tree-less barren landscape of dark rock contrasting with the shades of green mosses that crawled over them began to turn into winding roads lined with colourful houses and billboards. The waters of the North Atlantic that lapped the shore as he passed along the coastal road through Fossvogur sparkled in the sun, though the way the sun illuminated the waves was misleading as they would still be freezing cold if you were to dip your toe in.
He slowed down as he reached the edge of Reykjavík, unable to stop a grin breaking out across his face when he caught sight of the bunting that hung from street lamps and houses, and every flagpole that he passed was flying the Icelandic flag. It had already been 76 years since Iceland had become independent, and yet he still remembered it like it was yesterday. His people had such a unique culture, a deep love for their country and their home, and Emil wished with every year that came and went that they never lost that pride.
Once in the city centre he parked up just off Vonarstræti near the City Hall ready for his celebrations later with his Prime Minister and Government, but first he wanted to celebrate with his people.
He could already hear that the marching band had begun, the brass instruments resonating over the city, and he quickened his pace as he made his way towards the main streets where the parades were passing through. Summer in Reykjavík wasn't always pleasent, and Emil was so glad that the sun was out and there was hardly a cloud in the sky. He passed families laid out on the grass with chairs and blankets that they'd brought out from their houses, windows and doors were thrown open and drinks were flowing all round as people crammed into the bars and restaurants.
Jogging up the grass verge to stand atop the hill behind the City Hall, Emil closed his eyes for a moment and drew in a deep breath, feeling more alive today than ever, the high spirits of his people pulsing through his veins before he opened them again and looked down at the streets filled with hundreds of revellers.
In a country with a population so small where everybody knew everybody, it was hard for Emil to keep his identity as a Nation hidden. Although he wasn't blatantly obvious about it, he didn't ever try to dissolve any of the rumours either and just let his citezens draw their own conclusions.
"Hey, Ísland!" a voice called from behind him, and he turned to see a group of young adults sat on a blanket on the grass, beers in hand and their faces flushed from a combination of happiness, alcohol and sunshine. He didn't recognise any of them, but it was clear that they recognised him. He turned to face them, and caught a can of Gull as one of them tossed it to him.
In a land full of traditions based on folklore, tales of trolls and a still strong belief in magic, the people of modern Iceland had no fear or scepticism when it came to the rumours that their Nation personification was living among them.
The young man beckoned Emil over and patted an empty space next to him where he sat cross legged on the blanket then cracked open his can.
Chuckling to himself, Emil's heart swelled as he made his way over to the blanket and sat himself down, shaking hands with the circle of humans who sat around him before opening his own can. His company held up their drinks, and they clinked them together with a cheer of Skál.
The weather was warm, his people were happy, and Emil had some time to spare before he was needed by his government all suited and booted. What was an hour or so of his eternal life spent kicking back with the people who's very existence were the reason there was blood in his veins and a heart in his chest.
Gleðilega þjóðhátið kæru vinir! - Happy Independence day, dear friends!
Also, this is the car that Iceland drives and you cannot convince me otherwise. I spotted it when I was in RVK last year. If APH Iceland is real then I found his goddamn car.
#aph iceland#hetalia iceland#emil steilsson#happy birthday iceland I love u#In case you couldn't tell I have a headcanon that Ice just hangs out with his citezens and his government doesnt really care
