I love the way that the 3 main Xenoblade romances parallel each other. NoahMio, Shiora and Rex/Aegis. Shulk, Pneuma and Noah have similar characters arcs in comparison to the way their love interest share similar character traits and development.

Shulk, Noah and Pneuma are at their core, gentle people who care for others. However, in isolation, without support, they get driven by their anger and need for vengeance at the world. Shulk loses Fiora early in Xenoblade 1, this drives his motivation for his journey initially.

Pneuma is driven with guilt by what happened in Torna 500 years before the main events of Xenoblade 2. She hides her real identity down by creating a second personality, Pyra, who is what Mythra wishes she was.

Noah is driven mad by the way Aionios uses people like him for its lifeforce. He's gentle at his core, but the way the world uses people like him drives him mad in each life cycle further driven down his path of isolation due to his paranoid fear of losing Mio.

Mio, Rex and Fiora are the 'human force' that stabilises the other. They all have a hatred for the way the world uses them, but instead of hating anyone in particular, they focus that anger towards the world itself and fight to change it for the better.

Each main Xenoblade romance works because they're both two sides to one whole. Without the other, they're incomplete people, they are also their own individuals with their own goals and strengths and weakness that the other can fill in for.

All this to say that Shulk is Rex's type, and they probably got together during Xenoblade 3 Future Redeemed.

The Beginning.

With the Xenoblade series coming to an end with Future Redeemed and me also having finished my playthrough of XCDE recently, I felt I needed to finally make something for the game that started it all.

This is a redraw of a thing I started all the way back in 2016 but never completed, which is why this is extra special to me. I think my past self would be extremely proud, too- You can find the 2016 version under the cut! I made so much progress in these years holy shit

since fiora and shulk are both friends, they don't want to start fighting over you and ruin their friendship

which doesn't mean that they don't occasionally bicker a bit, as fiora can get quite feisty

fiora is much clingier than shulk and really tries to win you over by being very clear and direct about her feelings for you

she often cooks for you and asks you out for dates on the outlook park, watching the sunset together and talking

meanwhile, shulk doesn't mind letting fiora ‘have you’ and while he does like you, he's more worried about ruining his friendship than his feelings being unrequited

however, fiora does mind! sure, shulk is her romantic rival in this, but he's also her friend! and while she wants to date you too, she at least wants shulk to try his best to win your heart!

What I love about Shulk's characterisation across Xenoblade Chronicles 1 is the way he doesn't fit any of the norms JRPG protagonists tend to have. He's on a journey due to a need for vengeance instilled in him from years of grooming and with nothing else to live for beyond that.

Shulk is awkward and clearly neurodivergent coded in how he perceives the world and his fixations but also how he struggles with a lot of the social situations he ends up in if not for the support of Dunban, Reyn and others he'd be lost and would go further into his isolation.

Once Shulk learns the truth about the Monado and the Mechon he starts to question himself and whether he's right in his beliefs. He wants to learn more about the world, who he is as a person and also avoid creating endless conflict in the way the world was designed.

Zanza grooms Shulk to become his vessel and fed his belief and need for vengeance. Shulk realises this once he finally met Machina and spoke to them, he learned they were normal people just like Homs. Shulk struggles with how the world truly is and wants to change that.

Shulks act of defiance during the end of Xenoblade 1 is a way of reclaiming his own identity as well as the freedom for all Homs and Mechon alike. Shulk's journey is a path of acceptance and discovery that continues on even throughout Xenoblade 3 and Future Redeemed.

The mature, but mentally scarred Shulk we see in Xenoblade 3 shows the development Shulk made for himself over time. He took in the lessons of those he idealised like Dunban and wished to become someone his son and others could look upto.

I love Shulk's character so much and he's a big attachment from my childhood which affects me even now. Xenoblade series has so much depth and it's a series many people can grow to love through it's diverse cast of characters.

As you can see I was on my FFXIV-crossover kick at the time! Lizard Melia and Bunny Shulk, their true forms revealed...

I still have trouble drawing non-simplified stuff (like with actual eyes and noses and facial structure and all) but I rather like how this Melia turned out! :)

She's the most fun to draw for me, I love all the different shapes/arcs that make up her wings and bonnet and hair!!

There is also a bonus Bunny Shulk drawn by my boyfriend :)
