It makes me so happy that Devi finally ended up joining the long list of Tamil heroines who did dance numbers at weddings. I've included a few in this post.
Shaila Banu in Bombay (1995)
Neelambari in Padayappa (1999) [I know she's not the heroine, but how can one not include the iconic Neelambari in this list?]
Shakthi in Alai Payuthey (2000)
Shruti in Ahaa Kalyanam (2014)
Devi (and Kamala) in Never Have I Ever (2023)

Shruti Haasan and Mithun Chakraborty shine in this unsurprising thriller- Cinema express
A twist every minute, a surprise thrown at every turn — that is not what Shruti Haasan’s Bestseller thrives on. Billed as a psychological thriller, this Amazon Prime Video original is based on the book The Bestseller She Wrote authored by Ravi Subramaniam. It begins with a fan’s obsession for her favourite author and delves deeper into a story that offers insight into the psyche of a purely…

From Partition to the Present
An Interview with Artists Nadhi Thekkek and Rupy Tut
BY
ANANTHA SUDHAKAR
Catch an encore performance of Broken Seeds (Still Grow) at the American Conservatory Theater at the Costume Shop in San Francisco on March 15, 17, and 18. Learn more. This past November, Bay Area artists Rupy Tut and Nadhi Thekkek produced a mixed media bharatanatyam performance entitled Broken Seeds (Still Grow). Presented at The Flight Deck in Oakland, CA, Broken Seeds featured live spoken word and music, along with projections of Tut’s calligraphy and miniature paintings as a backdrop to Thekkek’s choreography. The dynamic performance captured the violent and complex history of Partition—the splitting of India into the independent nations of India and Pakistan at the close of the British Empire—and connected the questions around displacement and discrimination that characterized that event with the South Asian immigrant experience in America. As part of their research for this performance, Tut and Thekkek turned to SAADA’s online repository. In particular, photographs and stories about Bhagat Singh Thind, along with archived news articles about the Bellingham Riots of 1907, served as direct inspiration for sections of the show that addressed the history of anti-South Asian xenophobia in the U.S. Following the Friday, November 17th performance, Tides Co-editor and SAADA Academic Council member, Anantha Sudhakar, moderated an artist panel with Tut, Thekkek and the dancers who participated in the show (Shruti Abhishek, Tanu Sreedharan, Vertika Srivastava, Sri Thina Subramaniam and Lalli Venkat). The transcript below is excerpted from the first half of the panel, which focused on Tut’s and Thekkek’s artistic motivation and messaging. You can also listen to the full panel, which includes an audience Q&A featuring the musicians (G.S. Rajan, Sindhu Natarajan, Preethi Ramaprasad, Santosh Chandru and Chris Evans):
Broken Seeds (Still Grow) Artist Panel Friday, Nov. 17, 2017 AS: First, Nadhi, Rupy, thank you to both of you, the dancers and the musicians for this beautiful performance. One of the most striking things in the performance was the way that it brings together dance, spoken word and visual art, which I know reflects each of your artistic backgrounds. So can you start by telling us how this collaboration came about? RT: Well, Nadhi and I were friends before we were collaborators. Somebody asked me yesterday, “Would you collaborate again on a bharatanatyam piece?” and I said, “I don’t really pick the medium, I pick the person.” Nadhi’s a great collaborator, in general, so that’s the reason we both started working together. I love the fact that she is as invested in her traditional art form as I am in miniature painting. NT: I echo what Rupy said. I had found out about the Partition Archive through a friend, and I went to a “Voices of Partition” event, where witnesses to Partition spoke about their experiences, and that really moved me. I noticed that there were a lot of parallels with what the witnesses were saying during the panel [and] what’s going on in our world now. So that was what struck me about this project, in general: that there was something about the past that I wanted to connect to the present. Since her grandparents were survivors of Partition, Rupy was just one of the first people I talked to about it. And when we realized we were both working on our own artistic reflections of Partition, it kind of became a question of: “Should we be working together?” So that’s kind of how it all came together for me.

Parmanu- The Story of Pokhran, an ode to India’s unsung heroes who came together despite all odds to make India a Nuclear Super Power, opened on a great note at the box-office as it went on to collect INR 4.82 crore on its first day.
Not only the first day figure is higher than some of the releases. But it is admirable that the movie could attract audiences in such numbers despite yesterday being the Semi Final play off in the Indian Premier League, which is always watched by millions all over the country.
The film, based on a true story that made India Proud- the series of Nuclear Test Explosions in Pokhran 20 years ago (in 1998). The film has received extremely positive reviews from the critics as well as the audience. And we can safely assume that a good word of mouth will help see the numbers go even higher in the future.
John Abraham also expressed how grateful he felt that all the work he put in the film, is finally being appreciated. He said, “Nothing could make me happier today than the validation of our efforts to celebrate our unsung heroes by our audience across India! I have been getting so many calls from our distributors and exhibitors and I’m thankful to each one of them for their unstinted support and for standing by and loving this labour of love. I am humbled and grateful to each one of them.”
Parmanu is a tribute to the efforts of the Indian Army, scientists, bureaucrats, intelligence agencies and others who worked so tirelessly against all odds to ensure that India finds its due place in the World Nuclear Map.
In an interview with a leading daily, John also mentioned that the team made sure the casting was spot on since it added authenticity to the film. He said, “When you see the film, and when you see these people, we have stuck to how the Pokhran scientists looked. I should credit our casting agent Shruti Mahajan for it, she has got characters that look real. For example, the guy who plays Chidambaram’s character, who is Ajay Subramaniam in the film, this is his first film, he suits the character properly, he even has a South Indian accent. And we used his South Indian accent in a way it should be used, we have not tampered the facts. Tiku ji, who has also played Sonam’s (Kapoor) dad in Neerja, is from DRDO, so we have stuck to the way his body language should be. So going back to Diana, her character is an amalgamation of a couple of characters, in this cast, full of male characters, we also needed a female character to add some glamour quotient. She has added a lot of value in this film, as she has de-glamourised herself to a large extent.”
Directed by Abhishek Sharma, Parmanu-The Story of Pokhran stars John Abraham, Diana Penty and Boman Irani and is produced by JA Entertainment, Zee Studios and Kyta Productions. Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment is its All India Distributor.
Parmanu- The Story of Pokhran released Worldwide on 25th May, 2018.
