Born and raised in Detroit, Charlotte -or Charlie- was from a large but loving family, though it didn’t stay that way forever.  She was the 3rd of 6 children, 7 if you include Nick, her older brother Ben’s best friend and occasional hookup to her older sister who has lived with them forever. It wasn’t until the youngest, Freddie, was born that things got screwed up, not that it was his fault. Their family already struggled financially but they worked hard together to make it work, so when Charlie’s mom died giving birth to Freddie when Charlotte was 10, it was a huge hit and the family never recovered from that. Their dad especially took it hard, and began to drink. He abused the kids, but they told no one for fear that if they did, they’d be separated. Even with the abuse, at least this way they were together and had each other. The saving grace was their dad often went out to drink, and wouldn’t come home for a while. Aside from when he abused them, he took no notice to them, so when Charlotte started having dizzy spells or trouble breathing, only her older siblings seemed to notice. With a lack of authority and worried about her family, Charlie’s older sister Amber stepped up to help the family. Although Charlie was young she did her best to help, taking odd jobs and getting up early to help her younger siblings Devon, Eliza, and Freddie prepare for the day. Whatever was wrong with her could wait, as she was too concerned with helping her family; there wasn’t time to be sick.

Stuck in the middle and growing up around so many boys, Charlie learned how to watch out for herself. She wasn’t ‘tough’, but she didn’t back down from a fight either. She had to do what was best, even if people disagreed with her. Their family counted on each other, and she’d do anything to help them, but it only got harder as they all grew older. It became especially hard after Nick sexually assaulted Charlotte when she was 12. She didn’t know exactly what was happening, but he said it was okay. He was practically family after all and they cared about each other so if he said it was fine, then it was. Shortly after that started, social services came by on a surprise visit. With their dad awol and drunk, they were placed into foster care temporarily, though this was a bit of a relief for Charlie. Their intake was the first time they’d had a real, proper medical checkup. There, Charlotte was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. It was not that severe at the time and they treated her as best as they could, with what they had. By the end of the month her family was all back together in their home. Everything seemed okay for a while, but things picked up where they left off as more incidents happened between Charlotte and Nick, but now she was starting to expect it. She lost sleep waiting for whatever he would do and the stress of it all and lack of sleep put unnecessary pressure on her, and her heart.

Things only seemed to get worse when Ben turned 18 and enlisted in the army, stationed far away from his family. With Ben gone and Amber busy, Mark began raping Charlotte, and it took her a while to realize how wrong all of this was. One day, she decided it was time and came at him with a bat, only being stopped when her siblings walked in and called the cops. Her family was shocked to find her like this and wanted to believe Mark was a good person, after all the time he had spent with the family helping them when they were in need, how could he possibly hurt anyone? When the police arrived, Charlotte was taken into custody and sent to juvie. Things started to break apart back home, and when she finally got out everything was too far gone to be fixed. Amber en route to becoming a street drug addict, and the youngest 3 were split up in foster care. She was already a bit older, and now had a history of violence with a stay in juvie on her record… with a medical condition on top of that it was unlikely anyone would want to adopt her. Despite this, she knew there was still hope for her younger siblings. Charlotte was put into foster homes and group homes for a while, all while trying to track down her family, until she finally made a run for it. There were too many conditions in the system, Charlie kept getting in trouble. She needed to be on her own, do what she needed to at her own will. It was hard for a teenage girl… she had to make money to live while also trying to deal with a serious heart condition. She still wasn’t getting much sleep either, usually too worried to close her eyes for too long. Not long after, Charlotte was picked up by police for selling drugs. They thought she was on drugs because of her behavior, but she was exhausted, homeless, and terrified for her life. Charlie was little to no help in the process, but after finally identifying her and seeing her medical history and record, it was determined that she needed help and Serenity House was contacted right away. She’s a good kid at heart, but with a very, very troubling past.

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

Yeah they were cleaning up the streets and found me… Apparently I have too many years left on my clock to be thrown in the trash, but not enough to actually place me with my family. The island of misfit toys here was the perfect solution for everyone, and now they can say they all did a great job at ‘saving my life’ or whatever. Kudos to you guys.

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

A joke? I don’t understand why I have to be sent to an overrated haunted house in the middle of Idaho? Like seriously all that money and y’all couldn’t afford like a beach or some shit? Thoroughly disappointed, that’s how I feel. 0/10, would not recommend. I just want to know how soon it’ll be until I can leave. I don’t plan on staying long enough to really form an opinion.

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

That Nick will be there. That they’re going to try to keep me in here. I’m getting out ASAP, I don’t care if I have to pick 40 locks or hop over a razor wire fence with my bare hands, I’ll be runnin off into the sunset in the first week. I don’t have time to be scared. Don’t think, just do.

How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)

…..Is Serenity like a war zone or something? Are we being pitted against each other, medical vs. rescue and it’s just a fight to the death? That would be seriously interesting, but I still don’t understand the point of it. We’re all in here one way or another, we’re just fucked up in different ways I guess. It’s chill. Again, I don’t plan on staying long enough to form some sort of opinion on them.

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

Unfortunately, yes. I sat on trial for weeks and weeks while people were constantly explaining how I deserve this, or worse. Maybe I do. I don’t know. I never know, anymore. I don’t even know what is going on with me, or not me, but Carrie. I just don’t understand why this happened to me. I got straight A’s. I played the flute in the marching band. I was in charge of the ASL club. I'm not a murderer. I don’t need medication. I don’t need to be locked up. But Carrie does. So here I am.

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

Of course I fucking hate it here. I hate everything about this place. Wouldn’t you? If every single god-damned thing you had ever known had been taken away from you for probably the rest of your life? Stupid fucking Lavinia thinks we should be locked up. She thinks I’m dangerous. I don’t see the point. I did drugs outside of here, I’ll do them in here. I slept around outside, I’ll sleep around inside. I killed outside, I’ll kill inside. Don’t ask me anymore stupid fucking questions, you incompetent piece of shit.

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

I don’t know. I just don’t want Carrie to snap again. I don’t want her to surface at all. I don’t want to get in trouble, or be locked up by myself. I’ve always been claustrophobic and I’m worried that with living here, the walls are going to start caving in on me soon. I’m worried that I threw my life away and it wasn’t even me. I’m worried that everything I’ve ever worked for is gone. I’m worried that my parents will forget about me, and I’m worried that they’ll do that on purpose. I don’t think I have a biggest fear. They’re all pretty big, these days.

Why should I give a fuck? It’s not like I plan on making friends or anything. Everyone in here is all the same to me, just like the hospital before this, and school before that. You think the devil discriminates, then you’re dead fuckin’ wrong. I know what I’m here to do and it doesn’t matter who I inflict it on. Everyone here just thinks they’re so fucking special. I don’t need friends. I don't want friends. I need followers. I need worshippers. Doesn’t make a damn difference to me who they are.

Growing up in Boston, the son of a CFO and his fling, Drew’s parents really didn’t play a roll in his life. Sure, they were both there for his eighth grade graduation and his father showed up when he got his drivers licence, but aside from big moments he was along in the world. Not that he minded all that much as he was quite the extrovert and found friends easy and quick to make. He lit up a room with his positive personality and quick wit. But what really drew a crowd was his incredible ability to recreate the rather intricate and often gruesome scenes that ran through his brain.

It wasn’t that he was a particularly violent kid, the human body just fascinated him and he often picked it apart it it’s metaphorical seams. As he grew older, he became more serious about his artwork and was well on his way to a prestigious career when his father landed himself in rehab and he had to put life on hold in order to help him recover. Unbenounced to the rest of the world, Mr. King was harboring an addiction to several different illegal substances as well as alcohol and throughout rehab Drew stayed right by his side. Of course, he wanted to help as much as possible, even if his father had never actually been there for him. He drew with his old man through the withdraw symptoms and found it helped a lot.

Once his father had completed rehab and was doing mildly well as an outpatient, Drew changed career paths and decided to work in order to help people deal with their problems through a creative outlet in addition to their medical treatments. So, he applied right then for a spot at Serenity and to his surprise, was accepted. He hopes now to perfect his techniques and get those who have fallen on bad times expressing their emotions in a way that doesn’t need words. In a way that allowed for free reign and a venting space not limited by language.

A little troublemaker, that’s what Billie has always been. Raised by two very conservative parents, the girl was born in a small town which contradicted her huge dreams. From a very young age Billie had ambitions of becoming a famous musician, a dream that her parents killed from the first time that she talked to them about her desires. Their own dreams for their daughter were totally different, aiming for her to study and be successful in a real job, instead of “silly things like that.” This would have been enough for some one to give up on their own aspirations and make their parents happy, but definitely not for some one as wild as Billie. Begging to differ since she was only a teenager, with her crazy hair and makeup, that girl had a pure heart from the day she was born, even if people always misjudged her. Never missing a chance to help as a volunteer in local organizations, Billie was aiming to be a big star and make a difference in the world with her songs.

Her parents thought that they had finally gotten their own way when their girl was -somehow- successful in her entrance exams, and spent all their savings to send her in a big city away from home so that she could attend a big college and concentrate on her studies. Little do the two know that ever since her first day in Idaho, Billie has been skipping all her classes and focusing on building a career doing what she truly loves; making music. Self taught in guitar, piano and drums, Billie has secretly been in a band for two years and travels with her loyal friends around the state, doing small -yet very successful- gigs and gaining a gradually expanding fan base. Meanwhile, her parents still believe that she is going around doing volunteer work, in denial about their daughter’s true passion.

It is an undeniable fact however that Billie is truly interested in helping others, and has been her whole life. Her natural tendencies at being crazy and impulsive, helped the girl in taking the utterly random decision of applying for a job that fits her like no other; a music therapist in a Hospital. This way she can help others in recovering, while doing what she loves most, and is exceptionally good at. At the same time she is given the chance to prove to her parents that she is being “responsible”, of course hiding the fact that her new job revolves around music once again. Plus she was urged to get a job by her band mates, as money for their first upcoming album is needed more than ever. So how could Serenity refuse the assistance of some one who would be totally passionate about her job, even if she’d eventually turn out to be less mature than most patients here?

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

“Yes,” Alexander told the nurse simply, as he wasn’t prone to lying. Of course he knew why he was there - his parents needed a way to get rid of him and his peculiarity. It was all they talked about anymore - how to bring him out of his shell, what was really wrong with him, how to deal with the Schizotypal behavior he displayed. As he was their son, he wanted to believe they sent him there to help remedy his ‘disorder’, it was just an impossible thought now that he saw the hurried relief in which they’d left the office - two separated lovers sharing a moment of momentary relief.  

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

At the inquiry, the young man frowned, his mind filing through all the things he disliked already about the new, colder environment devoid of the warm red paint that covered the walls in his room and the constant hum of his radios as they played station 94.5 FM all day everyday. Alexander had a feeling the transition was going to be rough on him and his strict scheduling.

“Inconvenienced,” he finally responded, returning to the world of materialism,  almost forgetting he was part of a two way conversation.

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

His biggest fear? Thoughts swam through his head as he tried to pinpoint the concern that trumped all others. Sharing a room with someone? Terrifying. Talking to professionally employed therapists about his research into the radio messages of today and the emotional toll of causing your parents divorce? Exhausting. The potential of intimidating patients and staff alike ripping him apart at the proverbial seams? Threatening. But he supposed the truest fear - the one that made his stomach sink and his teeth chatter - was being treated like the freak he was. Ever since the diagnoses, everyone - even the few friends he occasionally talked to - walked on thin ice around him. It was as if he’d caught some contagious virus they didn’t want to catch and despite his aversion to people in general, it was an uncomfortable and undesirable feeling.

He hadn’t even seen any of the other patients, let alone analyzed their behavior and formed an educated opinion and he was being asked what he thought about them? This whole short interrogation process was taking a toll on his mood which was steadily declining and he slid further into his own world, unwilling to answer more questions. “I don’t know,” Alexander replied finally, a frown warping his features even further, his brown eyes dulling with exhaustion. Social interaction with people like the blonde nurse really drained his limited supplies of energy.

The small blonde shook her head, staring at her hands.  She didn’t know what this strange place was or why she was here.  She didn’t know if it was safe or if it would be like before.  She didn’t know if she would be here for a day, or forever.  She just knew that her brother wasn’t here with her, and this place seemed different than all the other places.

Ramsey looked up at the person in front of her.  "I don’t want to keep moving around.“  She admitted, looking back down at her hands.  She didn’t care about this place, it was just another place she was being moved to.  All she wanted was to be put with her brother.

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

Ramsey started crying, she didn’t like this person, they kept asking her questions.  She screamed at the person as loud as she could, pushing the table as hard as she could.  She kept screaming and crying as long as she possibly could and when the person stayed in the room she only got more upset.  She started calming down a bit after a while, but she didn’t want to answer the question out loud.  SHe didn’t understand why they’d asked her, the answer was so easy.  She was scared that they would move her away again, somewhere so far from her brother she’d never have a chance of seeing him again.

"Is Matthew-my brother, in here?”  The little girls face perked up, then fell, when the person’s head shook no. If her brother wasn’t here then she didn’t care about the other patients.  She looked back down at her hands, hoping that it was even possible to see her brother again.  She missed him so much, she needed to protect him, how was anyone else supposed to?

From an outsiders perspective, Evangeline Miller had a blessed upbringing. To anyone who wasn’t her, it was close to perfect - with loving parents and a beautiful home, it was a life anyone could have dreamed for, but behind closed doors, things were far from perfect. Although Evangeline’s parents loved her, they always wanted her to be the best, regardless of whether she could handle that. There was always a lot of pressure on the girl, to work harder, do better, be better. She was pushed to the limits, and while most of the time it worked in her favour, it got to a point where she couldn’t improve anymore.. so she snapped. Perfectionism was something she picked up from a young age. She needed everything to be perfect, from her surroundings, to her work and even to her appearance and personality. She felt the need to get everyone’s approval, her parents especially, and when she couldn’t get that, she become extremely anxious, stressed, and she felt hopeless. In her eyes, her only purpose in life was to become walking perfection, to make everyone around her proud.. if she couldn’t do that, she didn’t have anything to live for. Her achievements were never enough, she always had to be more, and while this stressful state of mind was clearly not good for her, it was only about to get worse.

Just after her sixteenth birthday, Evangeline started experiencing blackouts.. she would wake up in the middle of the night and have blank spaces where important classes should have been, or she would find herself fainting at random intervals during the day. She managed to keep this a secret from her parents for almost a year, confiding in a close friend to help her keep track of her school work, but very quickly her condition got worse, and it got out of hand. With the stress of her final year, Evangeline started blacking out more frequently, sometimes for a few days at a time. Because of this, her grades started slipping, and there were questions asked by her parents that she just didn’t have an answer for. Like why was she late coming home from school, why did she keep missing her extra curricular lessons, where was she if she wasn’t where she was supposed to be?

At first Mr and Mrs Miller didn’t even consider something was wrong with Evangeline. They simply thought their daughter was rebelling and was out of control, until they witnessed one of her blackouts themselves. It was during dinner in the middle of conversation when the young girl stopped talking mid sentence. She was staring straight ahead with a glazed look in her eye and no matter how much they tried to talk to her and get her to respond she just didn’t, then in less than a minute, her body slumped against the table before she fell to the floor, completely out of it. The worried parents called the paramedics immediately. It took almost five minutes for Evangeline to wake, and when she did she was completely disorientated and distressed beyond belief. Nonetheless, she was still taken to hospital where her doctor and a team of nurses monitored Evangeline for a whole six days while they tried to figure out what was wrong. In that time, the stress of knowing she had something wrong caused another three blackouts, all the same as the first. Her secret was out, and with further testing, the doctors came to a conclusion. Just two days after her seventeenth birthday, Evangeline Miller was diagnosed with fainting spells caused by stress and anxiety. In an ideal world, Mr and Mrs Miller would keep their daughter at home to help her through this, but instead, they started searching for the best place to send her. They couldn’t deal with the fact that their daughter had imperfections, so they decided it was best to send her away, and out of all the places they found, Serenity House seemed like the best place for her.

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

Fiddling with the bottom of her skirt, Evangeline fought the urge to look around for her parents. She knew they weren’t here.. she was here alone, it was yet another challenge they were throwing at her, this time without realising it. “Yeah- I mean.. yes..” she said slowly, correcting herself to try sound as professional as possible. “I’m here because I’ve been diagnosed with fainting spells that are the result of anxiety, stress.. exhaustion I guess..” she replied as though she was reading straight out of a text book. She stared at the person in front of her, blue eyes taking in their expression before she glanced down. “I have blackouts.. and I forget things all the time.. there are hours.. days even, where I have no idea what I’ve done or where the time has gone..”

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

“I feel.. like a disappointment.” she answered with a small shrug, her nails subconsciously digging into the palms of her hands. “I doubt I’m going to get accepted into college after this.. if I can still go to college that is. Everything my parents and I worked for is gone.. they think I’ll get better but I- I know I won’t.” she admitted quietly. “You can’t really recover when it gets so bad you end up in a place like this.”

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

Taking a deep breath, Evangeline gnawed on her lower lip as she thought of her answer. “Not getting better.” she said quietly. “I have my future planned out, I know what I need to do to get there, and this isn’t it. None of this is it.. I’m scared of letting my parents down. I’m scared of being stuck here with some awful..” she cut herself off, closing her eyes briefly as she composed herself. “I need to get better.”

How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)

“Fine I guess? I haven’t really thought about it too much. I guess a lot of them are in a similar position I am.. probably not the exact same, and I know others will have it worse… but we’re all here..” she paused again. “Like I said, I haven’t thought about it too much. I’m sure everything will be fine.. right?”

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

Like any little kid I liked to run around, get dirty, explore and  everything was fine till one day I got hurt. It was totally no big deal, I’d seem plenty of kids get hurt worse then that and they were just fine but for some reason it was different with me. I got a pretty little cut and for whatever reason it just wouldn’t stop bleeding. In the moment I didn’t think anything about it but as I kept playing with my friends I started feeling wrong. The little cut that should have stopped bleeding hours ago was still practically gushing. My friends mom noticed, freaked out and called my parents. We went to the hospital and they told me I had hemophilia and that I would have to be extra careful for the rest of my life. This didn’t stop me from doing what I want and having fun, if anything it just made all the dangerous shit even more fun. So I got really into tattoos a few years ago, obviously, and long story short that bit me in the ass. I was rushed to the hospital and my parents totally flipped. I guess they had enough of worrying about me and dropped me here.

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

I don’t know. I guess I’m a little pissed off about it like why the fuck should I have to be locked away here. If I go out and end up killing myself doing something I love to do that’s on me and I should be able to do that but at the same time I’m a little excited. I’ve never been in a place like this and I’m stoked to meet new people and see what kind of trouble I can get myself into here. Maybe I’ll learn how to make my own tattoo gun. That would be pretty awesome.

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

Loss of freedom for sure. I like to do what I want when I want and I don’t want anyone in here to tell me what I can and can’t do. I want to travel and see new things. I’m young and I want my freedom and no one should be able to tell me what to do. That and maybe isolation. I’m use to being surrounded by people and I don’t want to come into this new place and find myself alone, I need to socialize.  

How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)

Oh I love people. Its rare I meet a person I can’t get along with and I don’t thinks that’s gonna be any different in here. I’m fun and people are usually comfortable around me. I can wait to meet everyone. That’s one thing I have no worries about coming into this new place. I know i’ll love the people and I know they’ll love me.

Aspen Sinclair is an 17 year old patient in the rescue ward. She has been diagnosed with depression, perfectionism, and prescription drug addiction. She looks a lot like Nicola Peltz.

Aspen was normal, completely normal. Her parents were never short of money, and Aspen and her younger sister Maddie always had more than they needed. They got good grades, had lots of friends, were average kids at the least, and perfect ideal kids usually. In high school Aspen was pretty popular, in many clubs and on the honors list, liked by her peers and all her teachers. She got her way not because she was a bitch, but because she had earned it. Aspen expected nothing less than perfection from herself. She had the world in the palm of her hands, everything she ever wanted was hers. In the beginning of her senior year, trouble hit when her little sister was kidnapped. It was the worst 3 weeks of her family’s life, and it ended when the police came to their doorstep, told them that unfortunately Maddie didn’t make it.

This broke them. How couldn’t it? Poor little rich girl, they said at school about Aspen. But she accepted no sympathy. Life goes on, she told herself, and SAT scores didn’t care about who died, cheerleading competitions didn’t give you bonus points for dead family members. Aspen was the girl that kept it all together, and her peers only admired her more for that. Even when her long term boyfriend broke up with her when the subtle changes in her behavior started becoming more apparent, the blonde girl never flinched. In reality behind closed doors, Aspen needed to keep it together, she was the only one who could. After the loss of a child, her parents were fighting more than ever, and over the winter break it got worse when her mom found out about her dad cheating. This was an important time in her life though, and Aspen could not lose it now. Aspen always kept it together, always.

As fate would have it it only got worse, though. Her dad left them and her mom was put on medications to help keep her panic episodes at bay. She was hardly a mom anymore, and Aspen felt really alone. Her mom didn’t really notice, but every so often Aspen would take some of her mothers pills to keep her own anxiety in order. She didn’t have anyone to fall back on, but that’s okay, she could do it on her own. Or so she thought. Slowly but surely, Aspen started to slip after so long of keeping it together. She wasn’t a party goer at all, but she began sneaking off, hanging out with the wrong crowd every so often. It was her brief moment of escape from her life, real or fake. It allowed her to put her fake smile back on when she returned. Though still her charismatic and charming self, even her closest friends started seeing a small change in her. With no real parents to help her, and her old friends clueless on how to approach or deal with the situation, Aspen just slipped further and further into a vicious cycle of bad decisions.

All it took was one really, really bad week. She hit rock bottom, didn’t feel like she had anything left in her life that was worthwhile. On Monday Aspen was going about her regular day, eating lunch at school even if she was quieter now, and by Saturday, she was in the hospital from a drug overdose. Her mom figured out why her refills of her meds never lasted long enough, and told the doctors Aspen had an addiction– whether that was really true or not. With the amount of drugs in her system though, her overdose must’ve been intentional, and it was ruled a suicide attempt, though Aspen wasn’t talking. She just wanted to go back to pretending everything was normal. With little to no help from Aspen or her mom, the doctors had to do their best to figure it all out. It was in the hospital that Aspen was finally told to go to Serenity, so hopefully she can sort through whatever is going on in her head. Aspen is mostly happy so escape for a bit even if she must stay in the medical ward for a while because of her suicide attempt.

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

I have some things going on that I need to sort out. My parents can’t help me and the doctors gave up, so here I am… I’m here because they don’t think I’m safe in the outside world. Maybe I’m not, but no one is. That’s just life… no one makes it out alive in the end anyway.

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

Honestly? I’m okay with it. It’s nice to have a break from everything. I don’t know what it’ll be like going back home afterwards, though… seeing all my old friends again, teachers and classmates… I don’t know what they’ll think of me. Do they still call me their friend? I do get to go back right?

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

I’m not going to be able to cope with things as well as I normally do. I always thought of hospitals as a place where they break you, and when they put you back together it’s in their vision. But what if they don’t? What if there’s no fixing some of us? Maybe we’re just meant to be in our own vision, even if it’s different. Does that make sense? I promise I’m not on anything right now.

How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)

Am I supposed to feel a certain way? From what I’ve heard, they’re sick, really sick. I don’t really feel like I belong. We all have different ways of coping with things. I’m not hurting anyone, I don’t have any diseases or illnesses. I’m not really sure I fit in with the other patients, but I suppose I don’t really know many of them yet.

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

I’m here because it’s for the best, I guess. I let things get the best of me back home. I didn’t focus on dance enough. I got too upset, I was too stupid. I should have just listened to Abby and made her and my parents, proud of me. Maybe even my sister but honestly she just hates me too much, I think.

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

I’m feeling really nervous about being here. I should be training, practicing in New York. Talent scouts were supposed to come just before I left and Gianna promised to help me work on my aerial. Now, everything feels like a mess and I just feel so jumbled in here and cold. Really cold with itchy blankets. But I’ll try my best to keep practicing, I hope.

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

That my sister will never forgive me and never talk to me ever again. That I’ll lose all the things that Abby taught me. That my parents will forget about me and still be mad when I get home. That I’ll never leave this place or dance the same again.

How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)

I don’t know many people but I don’t want to disturb anyone. Especially folks that are physically sick. Maybe I can cheer them up by dancing for them. But, I hope to meet kids my age here, maybe?

Do you know why you’re here at the Serenity House?

“No, I didn’t notice the severe chest pain or the six billion trips to the Hospital not to mention the eighty million tests they had to stuck me with needles for,” the boy rolled his eyes, arms crossed in front of his chest as he sat propped up in a hospital bed. A moment passed, the sound of the heart monitor the only real noise in the room as the woman,a member of the staff, looked at Chris expectantly. He sighed, resigning himself to the fact that this was apparently not the time for sarcasm and continuing with a more serious answer, “I’m here because I have Myocarditis, which is a swelling of the heart that caused permanent damage. My mom plopped me here because she doesn’t want me to die. Well, either that or she got sick and tired of me and wanted to go move to the Bahamas so she could live happily ever after without the burden of sick kids, but I’m going to go with the former because she’s a decent person. I like to give her the benefit of the doubt.”

How do you feel about being here? Good, bad, indifferent?

“I mean, would I like to go back to my normal life? Yes. Do I miss my dog and the comforting warmth of standing on the heater? Of course. But, this place is interesting so I don’t mind staying here for a while. Maybe I’ll learn enough to start on my way to medical school, who knows?” Chris took a sip of the water the nurse had provided him with lunch earlier in the day, setting it back on his bedside table with a satisfying 'thunk’ before continuing.

“How do you feel about asking kids random questions all day and then being forced to record their answers? Is this what you went to school for?"

What is your biggest fear coming to the House?

"I mean, death would be pretty bad, that’s really the only thing I can think of.” Chris shrugged, getting bored of this interview, the lack of stimuli, and being bedridden with chest pains and tranquilizing medications. He was a man of action and all this lying around doing nothing was making him lose his mind.

“Oh, well that, and crazy people breaking into my room in the middle of the night and gouging my eyes out with a plastic spoon.” The boy cocked his head dramatically, setting himself the challenge of making this woman laugh, and finishing with, “But what are the chances of that in such a fine medical establishment?”

How do you feel about the patients on other wards? (Medical or Rescued Wards)

“I haven’t met 'em yet. but I bet they’re all too drugged up to make any kind of conversation.” The young boy shrugged, not really seeing a point to this interrogation other than to waste time and keep the staff from going insane from boredom. Chris thought that’d be quite funny, a hospital run by the clinically insane. He could write a book about that.

Seeing the woman finally get up, he gave her a sweet smile and a wave and she shuffled out of the room leaving him in the company of only his broken heart and the stuffed dog his Grandma had brought him because apparently he was still four in her mind. Now, if only he had his book on medieval torture.
