So, there you have it - my 13 cover ghouls; flawless!* ๐ My August theme - Of Monsters and Men - seems to have pervaded my picks. Admittedly, the theme has thus far presented more in my brain than on this page... but many of these monstrous texts are ones that I will, have, or intend to discuss here during Augusts past, present, and future. ๐ ๐ฏDo you like what you see? ๐ฏWhere do these texts rate on your lists - beyond covers into the depths of content? Featured are texts I adore and abhor; texts tbr and dnf. It's quite a range, but each has aesthetic (imo) & generally gothic appeal! ๐ ๐ฏAlso - just being nosey - are you superstitious? Some hotels and hospitals are built "without" a 13th floor for superstitions sake. As far as ideas go, I dunno, I'd say it's... kinda... *flawless... ๐ . ๐I'm going to pretend I'm not posting minutes before midnight and tag a few of you - no pressure if it's still before midnight where you are. And if it's beyond midnight & you want to post: do ittttttttt! โ . #fridaythe13th #fridaythethirteenth #ofmonstersandmen #monsters #gothicnovel #gothicfiction #bookstagram #bookish #books #spookynerd #darkacademia #bookworm #frankenstein #horrornovel #scifi #waroftheworlds #jekyllandhyde #edwardgorey https://www.instagram.com/p/CSiDSLWo515/?utm_medium=tumblr

"๐ด'๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐ ๐ด ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐." - Michael Scott ๐ท๐ท๐ท๐ท๐ท๐ท๐ท It's still Friday the 13th somewhere, right? Perhaps it is obscene to show this stack to you now, in the wasteland between Friday the 13ths, but I offer it to you all the same. Thank you to @gothicbookworm for the #showmeyourfriday13 tag ๐ค, and for testing my counting skills! I definitely didn't almost post a pic of 10 books, and I definitely can do simple addition... Each of these books is an eager member of my tbr pile. 12 of them have been gathered from Little Free Libraries, second-hand bookshops, and even bookstagram giveaways ๐. The 13th (In the Shadow of Poe) is a traditional library book. See, I can count. Everyone has different book consumption habits, and I'm pretty militant with mine. I may get to new releases late, but I don't care, 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th - okay now I'm just showing off ๐๐งฎ) -hand books are the one/twelve for me! ๐ค: What's your preference? Do you treasure texts with the fingerprints of past readers lingering on the pages, or do you delight in a pristine paperback with a spine all yours to crack? ๐: If you fancy buddy-reading anything pictured, scream madly below ๐. ๐บ: More details on 'The Masque of the Red Death' readalong coming soon; thanks to all who've already joined! The drawbridge isn't up yet though, if you want in too. . #gothic #generallygothic #michaelscott #theoffice #bookstagram #booknerd #bookworm #spookynerd #tbr #secondhandbooks #prelovedbooks #horror #thehauntingofhillhouse #themasqueofthereddeath #houseofleaves #scifi #ice #idaho #readalong #shortstories #americangothic #missperigrineshomeforpeculiarchildren #destinationvoid #rosemarysbaby #edgarallanpoe #mycousinrachel #thelastman #sylviaplath #possession https://www.instagram.com/p/B9uCrM3AJ9h/?igshid=7i4lg4qozfes

๐ธ๐๐๐๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐! ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ The tradition of decorated, indoor trees orignated in Germany, where Queen Victoria's husband, Albert, was born. It was, however, Charlotte, another German-native & wife to King George III (a few Kings before Victoria) who originally brought the Christmas tree from Germany to the UK. Though not the first member of royalty to honour the tradition, during her reign Victoria popularised the now widespread custom. This illustration (๐swipe) circulated in 1848, and though Vic's personal journals confirm the presence of a tree in her room the decade before, this image is credited as the source of our modern tradition. ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ @gothicbookworm challenged me to #showmeyourfriday13 favourite book covers, and @matt.lune challenged me to make a #christmasbooktree. To avoid being any later to the party, I've done things a little differently & merged the two challenges together, ending up with this festive flat-lay built up of decadence, decay, and the generally gothic! Whether you celebrate or not, I hope you all have a lovely indulgent day filled with books and time for reading! And if you are inspired to make your own bookish tree, please tag me in your creations! ๐ธ:' Engraving from the Illustrated London News showing Queen Victoria and Prince Albert around the Christmas tree, 1848, England' via @vamuseum and @britishlibrary online. . #merrychristmas #christmas #victorianchristmas #victorianlondon #queenvictoria #victoriaandalbert #christmastree #decadenceanddecay #bookstagram #bookstagramchallenge #literaryhistory #history #spookynerd #bookish #booktree #achristmascarol #thetimemachine #thusspokezarathustra #thereseraquin #she #bohemia #griefisthethingwithfeathers #jekyllandhyde #undertheskin #poe #thebutcheringart #theyellowwallpaper #dante https://www.instagram.com/p/B6fPXgmgvss/?igshid=of5xs7i5k0zr
