WhatsApp Rolls Out New Privacy Policy: Here’s What It Means for You
Tumblr media
Social media giant Facebook acquired WhatsApp back in 2014, and it slowly changed the way the platform accessed user data. And now Facebook is displaying a “take it or leave it” stance to the WhatsApp users with the newly updated privacy policy.
Earlier this week, users from around the world started seeing a popup notification regarding privacy policy and terms of service update on their WhatsApp, and most users had no idea what this was all about. With this latest update, the social networking company has expanded the way WhatsApp will share its user data with other Facebook-owned platforms and third-party apps as well.
And that’s not all. This update also arrived with the condition that if a person denies sharing their data with the company, i.e., Facebook, they need to leave the messaging platform.
These new terms of service will come into effect next month, on 8th February.
WHAT DOES THIS NEW PRIVACY POLICY PUT AT STAKE?
WhatsApp will continue to hold on to data, including the information of whether the user is online or not, frequency as well as the duration of their online activities, and group names and icons and status.
Apart from this, the messaging platform will also accumulate data from the new payment feature, which includes processing method, shipment data, and transactions. Beyond this, the company will also gather and share information such as location, operating system, browser details, device model, and battery level.
A PRIVACY LABEL U-TURN
Last year, back in July, WhatsApp provided its users with the option to “opt out” on sharing their usage data. In its earlier privacy policy version, the company said that the existing WhatsApp users could choose not to share their account information with Facebook to enhance Facebook ads and product experiences. The notification also further added that users who accept the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use will still have an additional 30-day period to make this decision.
However, coming back to this new update, the platform has wholly deleted this clause making it compulsory for the WhatsApp users to fetch and share their account information with other Facebook-owned as well as third-party apps.
Tumblr media
IMPACT OF THIS NEW UPDATE ON USERS
Back in 2009, WhatsApp was launched as a free, cross-messaging platform service. And in just four years of its existence, the platform successfully earned more than 400 million active users per month. After its massive success in the social media world, in 2014, the social networking giant Facebook bought WhatsApp. Slowly Facebook entirely changed how WhatsApp accessed its users’ data. With this latest privacy policy and terms of use update, Facebook is now displaying a “take it or leave it” stance to the WhatsApp users.
These new terms of use will allow Facebook-owned and other related third-party apps to abuse and cash in on the user data, which includes users’ personal data, violating people’s privacy for their commercial gain.
WhatsApp’s new privacy policy is short of clarity, and it fails to clear up the way data from Facebook, Instagram, and now WhatsApp is being merged and to whom this data is being made available by the social networking company.
CONCLUSION
An investigation will most probably help people to find all the answers to their questions with regard to this new data collection policy of Facebook. However, the social networking company hasn’t responded to the questions of the joint parliamentary committee in regard to its practices, which makes it more challenging to determine where this data sharing problem currently stands. Moreover, the absence of a data protection committee in India intensifies this problem all the more so.

This is Miranda July.
Miranda July is one of today’s leading female artists in being what we would call a “Renaissance Woman” of the arts. She is a film director, artist, musician, singer, songwriter, and author. She has taken a long journey, learning through her art as it’s evolved from one style to the next. She takes what she learns from one medium of the arts and uses what she knows and learns about something new to what she’s creating.
Early Life
Miranda grew up in Berkeley, CA, with her parents both teaching at Goddard College. She went to a college prep school in Oakland and by the age of 16, wrote her first play in which she cast 20 Latina women.
Early Art
Started with performance art in the mid to late ’90s. She was a part of a band and later had theatrical performances that showed beside other bands.
Creating Process
In an interview with Rachel Kushner, July talked about her creating process a little bit in how things “just happened” to be there in the moment of creating. Like in her Nest of Tens short film, she wanted to find a wealthy family’s house to film in to use their furniture. She had been planning on using a coffee table for the baby (the subject of the film) to be changed on. When she got to the home, she saw this couch which she claimed was perfect. For another film, Me and You and Everyone We Know, there is a little girl that approaches a door, she wanted a small door for the little girl to be perfectly seen through, and the house had already been a part of the house.
Much of her creating process is about “going with the flow.” Being adaptable in the creation process is important to her and helps her to create a better version than what she had imagined. The element of availability and intuition help to build her creations.
She started with performance art, performing on stage, retelling stories often based on the happenings of everyday life.
Photos listed in the Retrospect:  In order from left to right-
I’m the President, Baby, 2018
In this installation, there are four curtains that allow viewers to look in to the life of a man named Oumarou. When the curtains are open, they tell the viewer that that is what he is doing. (From left to right) the Blue curtain, when open, tells viewers that Oumarou is awake. If the curtain is closed, then he’s asleep. When the Brown curtain is open, he is using Whatsapp to call his mom in Niger. The Pink curtain is tapped “online,” meaning that he’s currently taking calls for Uber. The Green curtain means he is looking at Instagram. How
Eleven Heavy Things, Sculpture 2009
Is eleven large pedestal statues in which viewers can stand on, or place their arms, hands, fingers, or feet through holes in the large sculptures. The viewers get to participate in performance art in which they turn from audience to part of the subject of the work.
The Hallway, 2008
A 125 foot hallway lined with fifty wooden signs, hand-painted with text. The text acts as an internal voice as the viewer walks down the hallway. The “you” in text realizes that you’ll be walking down this hallway for the rest of your life. And like life, the hall is filled with indecision, disappointment, boredom and joy – and it does end.
Somebody, 2014
An app created to communicate with those around you. When you send your friend a message through Somebody, it goes — not to your friend — but to the Somebody user nearest your friend. This person (probably a stranger) delivers the message verbally, acting as your stand-in.
No One Belongs Here More Than You, Short Stories, 2007
No One Belongs Here More Than You is a collection of short stories of ordinary people living extraordinary lives.
Will I Know Her, website, 2002
is a web-based exhibit about being far from the one you love, for reasons that are out of your control.
Kajilionaire, Film, 2020
A film about a girl whose parents are con artists who’ve trained her in their art of scheming. She meets a stranger who makes her contemplate whether she stays with the family she knows, or takes hold of her own life in freedom.
(It took me a while to figure out how to complete this project. The rain has been spotty this week, and I didn’t want to hang up just plain pieces of paper that would melt in the rain. I found some page protectors in my supply closet at home and taped them up- hopefully this will stop them from getting soaked. I hung these up on the large retaining wall at the park in my neighborhood. People are constantly walking by this wall, so hopefully some people stop by to look at it.)

Study In The UK: What You Need To Know Today?
Intelligent Overseas Education Travel Update: A tumultuous and confused period has greeted students who desire to study abroad at the institutions of their dreams throughout the past few years. With the introduction of the new Graduate Pathway, it is no surprise that the United Kingdom continues to be one of the most famous study abroad destinations for Indians, who constitute one of the largest groupings of the country’s foreign student community.
ADMISSIONS
Now is the time to learn everything you can regarding studying in the United Kingdom. A tumultuous and confused period has greeted students who desire to study abroad at the institutions of their dreams throughout the past few years.
A tumultuous and confused period has greeted students who desire to study abroad at the institutions of their dreams throughout the past few years. For more than a year, governments and institutions worldwide have been collaborating to construct bridges that will allow students to move freely between countries. As a result of these initiatives, the prospects for students wishing to study in international locations have increased.
The United Kingdom has always been at the frontline of several of these projects. The UK has continually updated its laws and regulations to provide a clear route for overseas students, recognized for world-class institutions, research opportunities, a wide choice of courses and scholarships, and one-year postgraduate degrees. Many universities in the United Kingdom have recently introduced scholarships and bursaries despite providing high-quality education to students through the internet. As a result of the introduction of the “Graduate Route,” it’s evident that the United Kingdom continues to be one of the most famous study abroad destinations for Indians, who constitute one of the country’s largest groups of international students.
More than 56,000 Indian students were given study visas between April 2020 and March 2021, according to figures provided by the United Kingdom’s Home Office recently, representing a 13 per cent increase over the previous year. When it comes to undergraduate applications, according to data provided by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), there seems to be a 30 per cent rise in undergraduate applications and a 4 per cent increase in overall applications from India since last year.
Universities in the United Kingdom have been working closely with national and local governments to guarantee that students’ needs are fulfilled to secure the safety and well-being of all of their students. In addition, as the situation progresses, all aspirants and new students should stay updated for changes in policies and procedures – both in the United Kingdom and India – that could impact international travel and students’ ability to reach their campus in the United Kingdom.
FOR STUDENTS PLANNING TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME ESSENTIAL CONSIDERATIONS: THE GRADUATE-LEVEL PATHWAY
The Graduate Route (GR), officially introduced in July 2021, will make the exciting prospect of working in the United Kingdom after completing a student’s academic program a reality. It is a beautiful chance for overseas students who wish to pursue full-time work in the United Kingdom after completing their studies in the country. Students can work or search for a job in the United Kingdom at any skill level for a period of two years under the GR (this rises to three years for PhD graduates).
All overseas students who earn a graduate-level degree or even above at a conforming higher education establishment in the United Kingdom will be eligible to apply for this scholarship. It also covers students who have been studying virtually in their native country if they satisfy all of the standards to make things as simple as possible.
VACCINATION POLICIES ARE BEING IMPLEMENTED.
Students studying abroad should have their vaccines administered on a priority basis, as Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka have recognized in recent weeks. Depending on the state, students who have confirmed their admission credentials can contact officials in their local districts to arrange a vaccine. Some organizations also want to grant access to the second dosage within six weeks after the first, therefore significantly shortening the time between treatments, typically 12-16 weeks. Students arriving in the United Kingdom from a country on the “red list” will be required to quarantine upon arrival, regardless of their vaccination status.
It is recommended that individuals get vaccinated as early as possible; however, the United Kingdom does not require persons entering the nation to have been vaccinated. The United Kingdom has made steps to make immunization of overseas students a top priority. Anyone in the United Kingdom 18 years old or older can get the Covid19 immunization at no cost, irrespective of nationality or immigration status.
EVERYTHING CONCERNING VISAS
However, When it comes to international students’ ability to continue with existing courses or start new ones using a blended learning approach in 2020-21, the United Kingdom has decided to offer visa extensions. Over the past several years, a growing number of higher education students from India have been drawn to the United States by this type of support. With a visa approval rate for Indian students of 96 per cent, the United Kingdom is far higher than the worldwide average.
TRAVELLING THROUGH TRAFFIC LIGHTS: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
When it comes to international travel, the United Kingdom uses a traffic light system. While the general public from India is not permitted to enter the United Kingdom because the country is on the “Red List,” these restrictions do not apply to students who have a student visa (or Tier 4 visa) or who have been granted EU Settlement Scheme leave.
Regardless of the destination, specific measures, including a short quarantine period, should be followed. The advice on travelling to the United Kingdom differs depending on the four countries you visit – England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. As a result, all students planning to begin their studies on a university campus in the United Kingdom should verify that they are up to speed on the most recent laws and regulations.

Zoom, Amazon, ransomware: Tech’s big winners and losers of 2020
Tumblr media
We streamed, we Zoomed, we ordered groceries and houseplants online, we created virtual villages while navigating laptop shortages to work and learn from home.
When it comes to technology, 2020 was a year like no other — and as the world was forced to adapt to the coronavirus pandemic, some tech companies won big while others lost out.
Losers
Virtual Reality
As the world adjusted to a new stuck-at-home reality, the pandemic could have been virtual reality’s chance to offer an escape. With the use of special headsets and accoutrements like gloves, the technology lets people interact with a 360-degree view of a three-dimensional environment, seemingly a good fit for people stuck indoors.
But people turned to easier-to-use software and games that they already had. Few rushed to spend hundreds of dollars on a clunky new headset or tried to learn the ropes of virtual reality meeting software. And no VR games broke into the mainstream. So virtual reality, on the verge of success for decades, missed its moment, again.
Social media election labels
It was the year of labels on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even TikTok. Ahead of the November 3 US presidential vote, the companies promised to clamp down on election misinformation, including baseless charges of fraud and candidates’ premature declarations of victory. And the most visible part of this was the bevvy of labels applied to tweets, posts, photos and videos.
“Some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process,” read one typical label applied to a tweet by President Donald Trump.
But many experts said that while the labels made it appear that the companies were taking action, ”at the end of the day it proved to be pretty ineffective,” as Jennifer Grygiel a professor at Syracuse University and social media expert, put it.
Quibi
Less than a year ago, Quibi launched a splashy Super Bowl advertisement that posed the question “What’s a Quibi?” People may still be scratching their heads.
Quibi, short for “quick bites,” raised $1.75bn from investors including major Hollywood players Disney, NBCUniversal and Viacom.
Tumblr media
Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg raised $1.75bn from investors but shuttered the company in October, just six months after its April launch
But the service struggled to reach viewers, as short videos abound on the internet and the coronavirus pandemic kept many people at home. It announced it was shutting down in October, just months after its April launch.
Uber and Lyft
Fresh off of their initial public offerings the year before and still struggling to show they can be profitable, the ride-hailing services were clobbered by the pandemic in 2020, as people stopped taking cars and huddled down at home.
In May, Uber laid off 3,700 people, or about 14 percent of its workforce. Lyft also announced job cuts.
But there are some signs of hope. After significantly reducing costs by restructuring in the second quarter, Lyft said last month it expects to have its first profitable quarter at the end of 2021.
Tumblr media
Fresh off of their initial public offerings the year before and still struggling to show they can be profitable, the ride-hailing services were clobbered by the pandemic in 2020 as people hailed fewer rides
And the companies scored a major victory in California, where voters passed Proposition 22, granting them an others an exception to a law that sought to classify their drivers as employees, an expense that analysts thought would have pummeled their business in the nation’s most populous state.
US TikTok ban
While India outlawed the popular video-sharing app, in the US, TikTok appears close to riding out Donald Trump’s term without the president succeeding in his efforts to ban it.
Earlier this month, a federal judge blocked a potential ban. It was the latest legal defeat for the administration in its efforts to wrest the app from its Chinese owners. In October, another federal judge postponed a shutdown scheduled for November.
Tumblr media
Many artists like choreographer Netta Yerushalmy have turned to social media to share their work during the coronavirus pandemic, posting music and artwork on Instagram
Meanwhile, a government deadline for TikTok’s parent, ByteDance to complete a deal that would have Oracle and Walmart invest in TikTok has also passed, with the status of the deal unclear. While President-elect Joe Biden has said TikTok is a concern, it’s not clear what his administration will carry on the Trump administration’s attempts at a ban.
Winners
Nintendo Switch
Even in a year heralding splashy new consoles from Xbox and PlayStation, the Nintendo Switch was the console that could. Launched in 2017, the Switch became a fast seller. That was helped by the launch of the handled Switch Lite in September 2019.
In March, it became hard to find a Switch as people searched for ways to be entertained inside their homes. Boosting its popularity was the release of the island-simulation game “Animal Crossing: New Horizons,” which debuted March 20 and has now sold a cumulative 26 million units globally, according to Nintendo.
According to the NPD Group, during the first 11 months of 2020, Nintendo Switch sold 6.92 million units in the US. It has been the best-selling console in units sold for 24 consecutive months — a record.

Zoom
All video conferencing software — from Microsoft Teams to WebEx — thrived during the abrupt shift of tens of millions of people to remote working and schooling during a pandemic. But only one became a verb.
Zoom Video Communications was a relatively-unheralded company before the pandemic hit, but its ease of use let to wide adoption during the pandemic.
There were some growing pains, including lax security that lead to “Zoom bombing” breaches early on. The company revamped its security and remains one of the popular platforms to host remote meetings and classes.
Ransomware purveyors
The ransomware scourge — in which criminals hold data hostage by scrambling it until victims pay up — reached epic dimensions in 2020, dovetailing terribly with the COVID-19 plague. In Germany, a patient turned away from the emergency room of a hospital whose IT system was paralyzed by an attack died on the way to another hospital.
In the US, the number of attacks on healthcare facilities was on track to nearly double from 50 in 2019. Attacks on state and local governments were up about 50 percent to more than 150. Even grammar schools have been hit — shutting down remote learning for students from Baltimore to Las Vegas.
Cybersecurity firm Emsisoft estimates the cost of US ransomware attacks in the US alone this year at more than $9bn between ransoms paid and downtime/recovery.
Computer makers
After beginning the year grappling with exasperating delays in their supply chains, the personal computer industry found itself scrambling to keep up with surging demand for machines that became indispensable during a pandemic that kept millions of workers and students at home.
The outbreak initially stymied production because computer makers weren’t able to get the parts they needed from overseas factories that shut down during the early stages of the health crisis.

After battling exasperating delays in their supply chains at the beginning of 2020, the personal computer industry found itself scrambling to keep up with the surging demand for machines as people worked and learned from home
Those closures contributed to a steep decline in sales during the first three months of the year. But it has been boom times ever since.
The July-September period was particularly robust, with computer shipments in the US surging 11 percent from the same time in 2019 — the industry’s biggest quarterly sales increase in a decade, according to the research firm Gartner.
E-commerce
The biggest of the bunch, Amazon, is one of the few companies that has thrived during the coronavirus outbreak. People have turned to it to order groceries, supplies and other items online, helping the company bring in record revenue and profits between April and June. That came even though it had to spend $4bn on cleaning supplies and to pay workers overtime and bonuses.
But it’s not just Amazon. The pandemic is accelerating the move to online shopping, a trend experts expect to say even after vaccines allow the world to resume normal lives.

And thanks in part to shoppers consciously supporting small businesses, Adobe Analytics says online sales at smaller US retailers were up 349 percent on Thanksgiving and Black Friday.
At the more than 1 million businesses that use Shopify to build their websites, sales rose 75 percent from a year ago to $2.4bn on Black Friday, according to Shopify.
Jury’s out
Big Tech
Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google did well financially, with each company’s stock price and profit up considerably since the start of the year. They gained users, rolled out new products and features and kept on hiring even as other companies and industries faced significant cuts.
But not all is well in the world of Big Tech. Regulators are breathing down each company’s neck and that’s unlikely to ease up in 2021. Google faces an antitrust lawsuit from the Department of Justice. And Facebook has been hit by one from the Federal Trade Commission along with nearly every US state that seeks to split it off from WhatsApp and Instagram.
More cases could follow. Congressional investigators spent months digging into the actions of Apple and Amazon in addition to Facebook and Google and called the CEOs of all four companies to testify.

Kuwait's stateless Bidoon population angered by another death

Kuwait's stateless Bidoon population angered by another death
Tumblr media
The Bidoon's decades-long grievances drove many to death

The suicide of a young stateless man in Kuwait on December 6 has, once again, pushed to the fore the plight of the Bidoon – or “Without,” in Arabic – a stateless population of thousands who lives in the oil-rich country. The 32-year-old man was arrested on Sunday in Al-Wafrah, Kuwait's southernmost city, after residents filed a complaint to the police against an individual who was throwing stones at passersby. According to Al-Anbaa, a local newspaper, the man – who was not named in the report – was located by the police and was found to “behave abnormally.” Identified as a convict indicted in other cases, the young man – whose charges were not specified – was detained in order to be transferred to the country’s central prison, the newspaper said. According to the report, he was found dead hours later in the police station using a rope he created from a blanket he was given in his cell. In a tweet posted on December 8, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior said it ordered an investigation into the man's death:

Security media: Deputy prime minister and minister of interior ordered the formation of an investigation committee to look into reports involving the suicide of a young man (non-Kuwaiti) in the bathroom of Al-Wafrah police station, to identify the circumstances of the incident, and whether there were violations or misconduct in the procedures.
Death by suicide is rife among the Bidoon, a population denied Kuwaiti citizenship in the wealthy country. Regularly referred to as “illegal residents” by the government, there are officially 100,000 Bidoon in Kuwait, although activists say the population is larger. Their complex legal situation dates back to the creation of the Kuwaiti state in the 1960s. Having been nomads all their lives, they didn't respond to the nascent authorities’ calls for residents to register themselves as citizens and have since been denied nationality. Due to their legal status, their access to basic civil and human rights such as health, education, marital, birth, and death certificates, to name a few, is significantly limited. Although the Bidoon maintain that they are indigenous of the Gulf state, and that a majority of them have had no home but Kuwait all their lives, the Kuwaiti government claims that many are citizens of other states who have abandoned their real nationalities in hopes of benefiting from Kuwait’s generous welfare system. Following Sunday's tragedy, members of the community and supporters have taken to social media, using the hashtag #انتحار_بدون, or #Suicide_of_a_Bidoon, to express their solidarity and to demand the government put an end to the Bidoon's plight.

In recent years, hashtags like #BidoonLivesMatter and #ICan'tBreath, drawing from African American protests in the United States, have also been used following similar incidents of suicide among this community. In November, two other Bidoon men died by suicide. Alleged screenshots of a WhatsApp exchange shared on Twitter show one of the men, Zayid al-Asami, telling his son he was “deeply humiliated” and that he had given up all hope and so would take his life.

Since yesterday, this conversation, in all its details and words and all the pain it includes, haunts me. How was the father while drafting [it]? The son's heart while reading? “Deeply humiliated,” “Dad, overcome the devil,” “Take care of yourself” and then “Last seen!”
The other deceased man, Bader Mirsal al-Fadhli, posted a video on Twitter before his death voicing deep frustration at his life circumstances. Another incident of suicide among the Bidoon took place in May, and a medical student from the community also attempted to take his life in June. In July 2019, a 21-year-old Bidoon man took his life after failing to get a job because he couldn't provide a state-issued identification card. He, too, was described by the authorities as a “convicted criminal” and a drug abuser. That death triggered protests by members of the Bidoon community, who demanded the government take a corrective action to mend their status. Fifteen protesters were detained by the authorities on that occasion, including prominent activist Abdulhakim al-Fadhli. In a statement issued at the time, Amnesty International said:
These arbitrary arrests primarily targeting peaceful protesters, activists and human rights defenders in Kuwait are not only unlawful, but are only set to exacerbate an already tense situation brought to the fore by the young man’s suicide.
To protest their arrest, the jailed Bidoon activists staged a hunger strike while in prison, lasting for 12 days, and only interrupted by the deteriorating health of some of them. Despite calls on the Kuwait government to release the peaceful protesters, they remain in jail to this day. It is unlikely that the much-prolonged issue of the Bidoon will be handled by Kuwait's newly elected parliament, as dozens of past assemblies have fallen short of finding a solution. Veteran politicians have often used the plight in electoral campaigns, but once elected offered little to the community.
I hope certain parliament and governmental members sleep at night knowing their inactivity to this major problem will be judged greatly on the day of judgement!#انتحار_بدون_بمخفر_الوفرة — Don | الفيصل

Three Years After Family Separation, Her Son Is Back. But Her Life Is Not.
Many of the migrant families separated under the Trump administration’s most controversial immigration policy have been reunited. But some are still struggling.
Leticia Peren waiting for her son, Yovany, at La Guardia Airport in February. They had been separated after crossing the U.S. border together.
When Leticia Peren bid her 15-year-old son, Yovany, good night in a Texas Border Patrol station three years ago, he was still small enough that she, standing less than five feet tall, reached down a little when she placed her hand on his shoulder and urged him to rest.
Earlier that night, the two of them had concluded their long journey from Guatemala by walking for hours in the whistling desert wind, losing sight of their own feet in mud that felt like quicksand. The Border Patrol agents who apprehended them outside of Presidio, Texas, placed them in separate cells. Exhausted, Ms. Peren fell into a deep sleep, but woke up to a new nightmare.
Yovany was gone, sent to a shelter in Arizona. Ms. Peren had no money and no lawyer. When she next saw him, more than two years had passed.
At the time of their reunification, Yovany was the last remaining child in custody who the federal government considered eligible to be released. The bonds broken during their 26 months apart — when Ms. Peren was a voice on the phone more than 1,500 miles away, as Yovany made new friends, went to a new school, learned to live without her — have been slow to regrow.
By the time they were reunited, her son had matured into a young man, taller than her and with a deepening voice, one he could use to hold a conversation in English. Ms. Peren, frantic during the time it took to get him back, had lost some of her hair and developed a condition that, when triggered by stress, caused her face to sag on one side.
Years after the mass separations of migrant families spurred a national outcry because of the trauma they caused, much of the public outrage over the policy eased as thousands of parents and children were eventually reunited.
Ms. Peren’s son became a young man while they were apart.
Sunita Viswanath welcomed Ms. Peren to her Brooklyn home.
But for families like Ms. Peren’s, swept up by the Trump administration’s most widely debated attempt to deter immigration, the story did not end when the policy did.
To some degree, Ms. Peren and her son are lucky. They are being sponsored by an affluent family who took them into their spacious house in a well-heeled Brooklyn neighborhood. Volunteer groups have acted as informal social workers, tracking down doctors to provide free medical care and answering crisis phone calls at any hour.
But such groups are running short of resources now.
“Everybody’s tapped out emotionally, financially, caseload wise,” said Julie Schwietert Collazo, the director of one such group, Immigrant Families Together. “The need is kind of endless. There are cases where I’ve called so many people and nobody will help me.”
Ms. Peren, who is from Guatemala, read papers for her asylum case.
And it is sometimes confounding to Ms. Peren that she could feel so troubled in the home where she and Yovany are living, with its fancy appliances and art from around the world. Her childhood home in Guatemala had a dirt floor surrounded in part by chicken wire rather than exterior walls.
When she was 8, her mother sent her away to do domestic work in the homes of wealthier Guatemalan families who could afford to feed her.
At 16, Ms. Peren fell in love with a boy her age whose home she worked in. But the boy’s family rejected her because she was poor, uneducated and Indigenous. After Yovany was born, she continued working with her baby strapped to her back as she dusted, swept and mopped until on the verge of collapse.
“I would say to him, I’m your dad, I’m your mom, I’m your brother, I’m your sister, I’m your friend,” she said. “We’ve always been together, the two of us.”
Love Letter: Your weekly dose of real stories that examine the highs, lows and woes of relationships.
But by the end of 2015, the lawlessness in her city was starting to intensify. Gang members were urging Yovany, then in middle school, to join their ranks. At one point, she said, a man held a gun to her head and threatened to kill Yovany if she did not come up with several thousand quetzales a month, which she did not have.
The mass separation of migrant families had spurred an outcry.
Yovany was moved out of a Border Patrol station in Texas where Ms. Peren was detained.
She decided to move north rather than risk what might happen next. Word of the family separations at the American border, which had only just begun, had not made its way to most of Central America.
After Yovany was taken from a Border Patrol station cell overnight, Ms. Peren spent seven months trying to figure out how to get him back. Finally, seeing no other option, she agreed to her own deportation, believing she could fight more effectively if she were free.
After her release, she and Yovany kept in touch regularly through WhatsApp messages. Ms. Peren did not want her son to know how much she was suffering. Yovany did not want to tell her that his life was improving.
After spending about nine months in a children’s shelter in Arizona that he called the saddest place he had ever been, Yovany had been released to a foster family in Texas that welcomed him warmly. The parents gave him a tablet computer, which he used to film music videos with the other Central American boys living in the home. Yovany bonded with the couple’s 3-year-old son and helped to take care of him. A couple of times, the family floated the idea of adopting him, but Ms. Peren shut it down immediately.
Ms. Peren celebrating mass in Brooklyn.
In March 2019, lawyers who were soliciting support for separated families made a presentation in a Hindu ashram in Queens, which Sunita Viswanath, an Indian-born human rights activist, occasionally attended. She and her husband, Stephan Shaw, figured that their large home, where they often housed multicultural artists and other activists passing through New York, could easily accommodate a mother and child.
They agreed to take full financial responsibility for Ms. Peren if she were allowed back into the United States to be reunited with Yovany.
The night before Ms. Peren arrived in New York, more than two years after her first journey to the United States, Mr. Shaw spent hours on Duolingo practicing his halting Spanish. He was the only one in his family with any knowledge of the language.
Sitting in their living room with a reporter, Mr. Shaw and Ms. Viswanath, along with her parents and two of the couple’s sons, greeted Ms. Peren with big smiles. She looked at them nervously as her lawyers translated the family’s questions:
How was your flight? Are you tired? Hungry?
Lawyers for the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project in New York solicited support for separated families.
Her new room is the first Ms. Peren has not had to share.
They sat down to a meal of Indian food, which Ms. Peren had never seen before. She pushed the food around on her plate. Ms. Viswanath asked if she would be taking a citizenship test soon. Ms. Peren’s lawyers explained that such a possibility was years away. Her asylum case, a first step, had not even begun.
Ms. Peren said good night and settled into her room: the first in her life that she had not had to share. But she felt so lonely and unable to communicate that she cried herself to sleep.
Without a job, Ms. Peren fell into a familiar role as a house cleaner while she waited for the government to approve her son’s release. The family discouraged her, but she insisted that the scrubbing and dusting was calming, and that she had nothing else to do.
After nearly a month of waiting for Yovany, she met his flight at La Guardia Airport, but their relationship did not immediately fall back into place. Standing at the gate to greet him, Ms. Peren burst into tears and hugged him fiercely. But then they both recoiled a little. As they walked to baggage claim to retrieve Yovany’s things, they did not make eye contact. In the car on the way home, he video-chatted with the friends he had left behind in Texas.
Ms. Peren reunited with Yovany after years of keeping in touch through WhatsApp.
Yovany’s presence eased any tension in the home as he lapped up the affection of the host family. Ms. Viswanath began tutoring him in reading. Her parents grew enamored of him because he did chores without asking. Yovany beamed on the brink of tears one afternoon when, after he had announced that he wanted to become a filmmaker, Mr. Shaw gave him a hand-me-down Canon camera. Their 12-year-old son, Satya, started teaching him to play piano.
Establishing relationships outside the home proved more difficult. Yovany tried to reconnect with some of the children he had met in detention, who had since moved to New York, but they lived in immigrant enclaves in Queens and the Bronx, and worked when they were not in high school.
Yovany had been living with a foster family in Texas.
He also spent several months in an Arizona children’s shelter.
When the coronavirus pandemic hit, the household quarantined together for a few months, after which Mr. Shaw, Ms. Viswanath and their son decamped to their second home in New Mexico. Ms. Viswanath’s parents eventually joined them, but Ms. Peren and Yovany had to stay in New York as a condition of their pending immigration cases.
Mr. Shaw and Ms. Viswanath made arrangements for Ms. Schwietert Collazo’s organization, Immigrant Families Together, to deliver groceries weekly, and left enough money for anything extra Ms. Peren might need. There were a few weeks when the groceries could not be delivered, but Ms. Peren did not want to ask for more money. She was ashamed that she had been reliant on the family for so long.
Ms. Peren pointing to the Statue of Liberty from the Brooklyn Bridge.
She stormed out of the house one afternoon and walked down the street at a frantic clip, asking anyone who appeared to speak Spanish if they knew where she could find a job. Most, she said, looked at her like she was crazy.
A Peruvian woman told her about a Hasidic neighborhood where she could line up for work cleaning houses, but warned that she would have to compete against others who spoke English. The first several times, Ms. Peren went home empty-handed. Eventually, she began getting work at least one day a week.
“It’s something,” she said one recent evening, “But I don’t feel any closer to being able to be independent.”
Ms. Peren’s host family went to New Mexico during the pandemic, but she was unable to leave New York.

In some ways, Ms. Peren said, her life is much better than before. She and Yovany have warmed to each other again. They laugh and stay up late at night talking.
But even now, they keep the conversation light, not yet ready to share everything, or listen to an honest account of the more than two years they spent apart.
Ms. Peren says she has come to understand that being reunited with her son did not restore the bonds they once shared. Instead, she said, they are different people in a new place, building a relationship that is, in some ways, just beginning.

Indonesia's 'new normal' immigration policy may break families apart - Coconuts
Starla Wehrli and Rio welcomed their first child on June 4, a day that marked the beginning of their new journey as a family of three.
But Indonesia’s newly updated immigration policy amid the COVID-19 pandemic might force their little family — and others — to separate in less than a month.
“I wouldn’t wish this feeling on anyone: to think that you have to leave your newborn baby in a matter of weeks. And then leave them for who knows how long,” Wehrli said.
Indonesia adopted emergency measures at the onset of the coronavirus outbreak in response to global travel restrictions amid the pandemic, and granted foreigners in the country emergency stay permits. On Monday, a new set of regulations came into force for various stay permits and visa holders in Indonesia, which has unsurprisingly been met with shock and backlash.
Wehrli is one of the many foreigners impacted by the latest regulations in Indonesia and — unless any significant changes occur — will have to leave the country by Aug. 12.
“I’m shocked. I’m standing there [at the immigration office] with my husband and 5-week-old daughter crying and begging them to help us. They said they cannot.”
Under normal circumstances, Wehrli’s status as a foreign national would only mean going through heaps of bureaucratic procedures common in Indonesia to secure the appropriate stay permit.
The 38-year-old American has been living in Bali for almost three years, and got married to Rio, who is Indonesian, last July. She’s been staying in the country with a temporary stay permit, or ITAS, which was originally sponsored by her employer in Indonesia.
With that ITAS having expired on July 3, Wehrli planned on changing it to a spouse-sponsored permit. But the newly announced immigration rules place her under the category of ITAS holders ineligible for extension, and with immigration not accepting new applications amid the pandemic, she will have to leave next month.
“I’m shocked. I’m standing there [at the immigration office] with my husband and 5-week-old daughter crying and begging them to help us. They said they cannot,” Wehrli said.
Wehrli has limited options. She is trying to get her daughter an emergency passport so both mother and daughter can at least stay together, but with the ongoing pandemic it might take three to four weeks to process. With other paperwork required to bring her daughter along for the journey, there may not be enough time to process things before she is due to leave.
“There is no way for me to leave with her unless she has her paperwork,” the new mother said.
“We also met with her pediatrician today who said she is not fit to fly. She is too young, she’s not had her vaccines — it’s too risky even in one month.”

It’s a different yet similar story for Kailene Klix, who may not have enough time to arrange everything to stay with her husband, a Balinese man named Kadek Dwi Devayana, here in Indonesia.
The couple, who met one and a half years ago, had to weather through language barriers and Kadek’s traditional Balinese family before their relationship was accepted.
“We fell [in love] pretty fast, but it wasn’t always easy. His family wanted him with a Balinese girl,” Klix said of her relationship with Kadek.
“[But] after trying for some time they were convinced and honestly I didn’t expect as warm of a welcome as I’ve had.”
Klix, who is also American, told Coconuts Bali that they initially planned to work on their marriage paperwork in March but were forced to wait it out as the coronavirus outbreak grinded everything to a halt. The couple had also planned to get married in June, but was again forced to cancel because of the pandemic.
Then in April, Klix found out she’s pregnant.
They got married on July 5 through a traditional Balinese wedding ceremony, but were unable to get the required paperwork for an official marriage certificate due to halted operations amid the pandemic. Klix is currently on a work ITAS that will expire next month, and even if they could start the process for a spouse-sponsored ITAS, the fact that immigration isn’t currently processing new applications puts them back to zero.
“I have been told I need to leave in 30 days [from July 13] despite being five months pregnant,” Klix said.
“They act like everything is our fault for not having it all together but how can we do anything when the government [offices] are all closed and with different rules?”
She said that she is trying to stay calm throughout the ordeal, adding that her husband, who is normally calm and carefree, is also stressing out.
“I just wish they had anticipated the backlash and questions, and been prepared for such situations,” Klix added, before lamenting on the possibility of delivering the baby in the US without Kadek.

Meanwhile, 30-year-old Martina Iribarne entered Indonesia with a free 30-day visa. She had only planned a short stay in Bali before heading to Australia, where she was supposed to work for a year. When the borders closed due to the pandemic, Iribarne stayed here in Indonesia thinking she could at least stay until the global health crisis is over.
Australia is not currently accepting foreign visitors, and Iribarne said she doesn’t have the option to go back to her home country Argentina either, as she doesn’t live there anymore. Even if she could find another country to go to, her options are limited because most countries are still closed to foreign travelers.
“I feel like a prisoner … I wasn’t planning to stay [in Indonesia]. I feel discriminated against because it is the only visa they don’t let extend,” Iribarne said, referring to how eligible foreigners who entered Indonesia with a visa on arrival have the option of extending their visas.
“I feel sad for having to leave a country I love and where I feel at home. I have friends living here … I feel impotent because everybody’s telling me there’s nothing to do, that I have to leave.”
Though Indonesian immigration does not permit extensions for the free 30-day visa, Iribarne said officials should consider adapting the rules to the new situation with COVID-19, or at least allow foreigners to apply for a different type of visa in this unprecedented time.
Foreigners in Indonesia have taken to social media to share their plight and information, hoping to help each other out and find a tangible solution.
According to Jamaruli Manihuruk, who heads the regional office for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, there are about 7,000 foreigners currently in Bali, more than half of whom entered Indonesia using a free visa.
Arvin Gumilang, a spokesman for the immigration office at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, told Coconuts Bali via WhatsApp yesterday that officials will continue to review the updated policy.
“We will continue to review the policy to evaluate its effectiveness, but the provisions are already enforced,” Arvin said.
“Though the new regulations are meant to apply as a general rule for all, if there are special cases we will also consider the human rights aspect, but it will certainly require a special policy from the leadership and must first be submitted.”
It’s not entirely impossible that Indonesian officials will respond to the backlash and concerns with compassion, but for the time being foreigners like Wehrli, Klix, and Iribarne are unfortunately still left in a limbo.
“Everybody said ‘they don’t care,’” Iribarne said, referring to the Indonesian government.
“But I hope they change their minds in the [coming] days.”

Looks Bad' — Bitcoin Futures Echo Days Before March Crash, Says Trader #Bitcoin (BTC) futures were worrying analysts on July 10 as volume data suggested serious weakness and the potential for a major pullback. Uploading a weekly chart of CME Group’s Bitcoin futures to Twitter, Cointelegraph Markets analyst filbfilb did not mince his words describing the current climate. Filbfilb: BTC futures “almost identical” to March “Looks bad,” he summarized, noting that a volume indicator had returned to an identical setup as the week before Bitcoin crashed to $3,600 in March. “Almost identical positioning as the big drop last time and a clear descending triangle full of wicks at resistance, trading below (point of control).” Specifically, commitments of traders (COT) — both retail and institutional — had maneuvered to exactly the same place that it was in just days prior to the crash. COT is updated on Fridays using data from the previous Tuesday; as such, the metric gives a snapshot of the status quo several days previously. “I doubt it has changed much,” filbfilb told Cointelegraph in private comments. COVID-19 dump to be avoided Bitcoin has seen mixed price action this week as moves towards $9,500 were dictated by stock markets. A drop late Thursday took #BTC/USD back to $9,000 support. Asked whether traders should expect an exact rerun of March, however, filbfilb remained more optimistic. “I don't think there will be a dump anything like last time,” he wrote. “However; the positioning of the big players began 8.5-10.5k last time & that was before the climate took a nose bleed- these guys are short here on technicals rather than the external risk (in my opinion).” Bitcoin derivatives have sparked differing narratives in recent weeks. In late June, a $1 billion open interest expiry event initially fuelled speculation of a price drop, but ultimately had no discernable impact on the market. Other Bitcoin network fundamentals remain strong, with hash rate reaching all-time average highs this week and difficulty set for a 9% upward adjustment in two days’ time. ⏬Recommended miner⏬ WhatsApp:+15614629097 Email:[email protected] (at Hong Kong) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCkJchXjEOr/?igshid=abbnirxgftrs
