You couldn’t stand here in shock anymore. You step forward, reaching out for whatever brand of pregnancy tests looked the fanciest. You grab one with digital results and one with the traditional developing lines and toss them into the basket. Then you grab another random box, just in case. Groceries went on Van’s debit card this week, so you might as fucking well.
You cheeks flush as you propel yourself to the cash register, deciding at the last second to do self service. The last thing you felt like doing was handing a stranger three boxes of pregnancy tests while your hands were shaking so bad you could barely get the barcodes to read on your items.
This wasn’t happening. You were overreacting. There was no way.
Word count: ~3.1k
A/N: content warning for (implied) references to abortion
You jolt awake from your dream, your eyes opening to the brick wall of your bedroom.
It was just a dream. Thank God.
You melt into the mattress with a sigh of relief. It was Saturday, you reassure yourself, and slowly the impending panic attack from your work nightmare starts to dissolve. But it doesn’t go away completely, the vivid imagery from the dream still stuck in your head. Another night of dreams so weird and realistic that you wake up feeling exhausted.
You force yourself to stop thinking about it, slumping out of bed. You’re grateful Van had turned the thermostat up before he’d left for the studio, but you still grab the hoodie he’d worn yesterday out of the hamper, throwing it on as you head for the kitchen.
The light on the coffee machine is glowing, half a pot of coffee still being kept hot on the burner. You smile to yourself as you grab a mug and fix yourself a piping hot cup before backtracking to your bedroom to grab your phone so you can check your notifications as you settle down on the living room couch.
Van had clearly overslept, evident by the text you’d gotten from Bondy timestamped two hours earlier: Can you make sure Van is awake? He must’ve dashed out within the last hour.
You try to enjoy your day off as you drink your coffee and watch some morning TV, but no work just means that your to-do list for around the house is at the forefront of your mind. You’ve got to go out and grab some groceries, for sure; there’s only so many nights you can stomach the curry Van keeps bringing home on his way home from work. Two nights ago it had flipped your stomach inside out, causing you to be violently nauseous the next morning, so yesterday you’d had to opt for a bland peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Even now that wasn’t mixing well with the coffee, but that probably had more to do with the dread you were feeling about all that needed to be done.
The hampers have been overflowing, too. It was way overdue for you to schedule laundry services, but then that meant you needed to sort by color and bag everything up… It all felt so exhausting, but laundry was an urgent matter because Van needed clean clothes for the week he was about to spend in the UK soon. He’d offered to handle the laundry himself, but you know he doesn’t bother sorting colors properly, and you don’t want another load of your work wardrobe ruined.
You sink into the couch, allowing yourself to become a puddle of existential dread for a while longer before you finally heave yourself up, fighting a stomachache as you deposit your mug into the sink and head for the bathroom to start getting ready for the day.
It takes all your energy to brush your teeth, wash and moisturize your face, and manage to make your hair look presentable. You leave Van’s hoodie on and wriggle into a pair of jeans and your shoes before you’re gathering your things, praying the afternoon rush at the grocery store hasn’t started yet.
Just as you’re checking your phone on the way out the door do you notice the reminder for your birth control that had gone off hours ago, while you were still sleeping in. You set your purse down on the kitchen island, rerouting to the bathroom to make sure you take it.
You’re on your last day, mentally making a note to yourself to stop by the pharmacy as you pop the last tablet out of the foil backing. Once you’ve swallowed it you flip the package over again, squinting at it. You’re done with your week of placeholder pills, and your period usually hits you full swing on the second day of them. That explains the stomachache, and the exhaustion. Your body must be winding up for a real bloodbath.
New York in October is crisp and breezy, perfect hoodie weather. By the time you’ve walked the blocks to the grocery store the cool gusts of wind are a relief on your warm cheeks, and you feel a little more awake as a result of getting your body moving. You dig the shopping list you’d made with Van last night out of your bag as you’re welcomed through the automatic doors of your local supermarket, trying to decipher Van’s handwriting as you grab a cart.
The crowds aren’t too bad, and you manage to breeze through the produce and frozen food section easily. They’re out of stock of you and Van’s favorite ground coffee, but your agreed-upon second choice is available. You get Van a new box of tea, because you can’t remember off the top of your head if he’s running low, and a giant frozen pizza you decide to make for dinner tonight after you pass it for the third time and can’t resist.
Just as you’re getting ready to wheel your cart into line, taking a quick peek at the houseplants, do you remember your impending period and the fact you’re out of tampons.
You’re relieved that you remembered, quickly steering your cart away from the display of cacti and towards the pharmacy. The crowds thin out, this corner of the store almost deserted as you roll into the feminine hygiene aisle, leaving your cart safely to the side as you step forward to consider the options in front of you.
You grab your regular brand of tampons before stepping over to the pantiliners. The brand you’d just finished a box of had an unpleasant perfume scent to them, so you poke around looking for something unscented, preferably hypoallergenic.
Feminine hygiene blends seamlessly into family planning, and as you grab a box of unscented pantiliners your hand brushes the box of condoms next to it. You remember the early days of dating Van, when one of you needed to buy a box almost every single time you went out, when Van’s wallet and duffle bags were practically oozing with them. Now it’s been over two years since you two have had to bother with them, and you don’t miss it at all.
You dump your items into your cart and start to head back for the register, passing the family planning section as you go. You’re still reminiscing about condoms; times Van had forgotten one, a mishap once where it had slipped off inside of you. That had been terrifying. You were panicked, Van was apologetic over something that wasn’t his fault, and tension had radiated off of you two for an entire week before…
Oh fuck.
Condoms have turned to pregnancy tests, and something about that past memory has your brain whirring. For the first time since that mishap years ago you feel that cold, special type of panic seep into your bones. And while last time your period had come, this time you couldn’t say the same.
But it couldn’t be! You were on birth control, and took it very seriously. Surely your period will arrive within the next day or so, and you’ll feel silly for standing here in the grocery store, frozen in front of the pregnancy tests.
But as hard as you try to shake the feeling, the longer you stand rooted in place the more your head starts spinning: The exhaustion. The vivid dreams. Throwing up the curry. The uneasiness in your stomach this morning.
It didn’t make any sense. You try to snap yourself back to reality so that nobody turns the corner to see you pale as a ghost, about to throw up your morning coffee right there on the shiny white tile floor. You shake your head to yourself, gather up the strength to keep moving, and manage to push your cart approximately one inch forward before you see a home testing kit for UTIs, and you’re on the brink of fainting again.
Because holy fuck. You’d taken antibiotics this month. For a UTI.
That’s your mantra as you sit in the back of an Uber, unable to haul all of the groceries all the way back to your building on foot. You’re ready to get home and rip open these pink cardboard boxes and put your mind at ease. Because this wasn’t happening. You were overreacting. Because there was no way.
You’ve practically bitten your fingernails down to nubs by the time the driver jerks to a stop across the street from your doors. You give him a quick thank you as you climb out, already having left a gracious tip on the app. You’re not a spiritual person but the whole elevator ride up you’re praying to something, anything, that Van wasn’t home early from the studio. Even if he’s the person you need most in the world at this moment, you needed to know the facts before you freaked him out, too.
“Van?” You call out cautiously as you unlock the front door, leaning down to grab all of the handles of your bags before lugging everything into the apartment. “Babe? Are you home?”
No answer. You kick the door shut behind you, rushing to set the groceries down on the kitchen island. A yellow apple is disturbed in the process, gaining momentum as it rolls across the marble before landing on the kitchen floor with a soft thud. You leave it there, rounding the island to grab a steak knife from the knife block, overzealously stabbing into the plastic wrapping on the first box of pregnancy tests.
You’ll take two, you decide; One digital, one traditional. It might be too early to detect it, after all, so you’ll save the others in case your period still doesn’t come. Two should be enough for now.
You scour the instructions, hardly comprehending anything you read. In the end Google gives a simpler procedure, and you pee into one of the kitchen glasses (yuck) before dipping both pregnancy tests in the sample and leaving them to process.
As you wait for the results to process you leave the tests on the bathroom counter, pacing madly in the kitchen. You’re on high alert for any sign of Van’s arrival, checking your phone over and over as you pace.
After an eternity, the timer you’d set on your phone beeps, and you trip over yourself through the doorway into the bathroom.
Pregnant
You see the digital results first, your breath knocked clean out of you. The second test is just as clear. There’s no fussing or debating over whether there’s a second line or not; there’s clearly two crisp, red slashes across the display panel, a definite positive.
Holy shit. You were pregnant.
\\
It takes Van three more hours to get home from the studio.
That’s three hours of pacing, of staring at the pregnancy tests. Of falling down the rabbit hole on Google, reading Reddit forums of mothers who were overjoyed with their accidental pregnancy, mothers who regretted it and cautioned others to get an abortion, watching youtube videos of happy couples beaming while they cheerfully took care of perfectly-behaved toddlers, and videos of panicked women lying in hospital beds ready to finally bring their baby into the world. You scroll through the Instagrams of friends who have already had children, and try to imagine your feed looking like theirs. After looking at a photo of your friend, her partner, and their child at the pumpkin patch you squeeze your eyes shut, try to morph the picture in your brain to be you and Van and this other, unknown human being that’s been making you nauseous. Then you return to Reddit to read more forums of women who have had their birth control fail due to antibiotics, and mentally kick yourself for forgetting that risk.
By the time the doorknob rattles with Van’s key, opening to reveal a cheery Van already starting to talk about the song the band recorded today, your mind is swimming with everything the internet has showed you. And as much as Van is the one person in the world you need right now, in order for him to be there for you you’ve got to tell him first, and when you see how happy and oblivious he is it feels like the entire world is crushing down on your shoulders.
“Van,” You start, but your voice catches so you have to clear your throat immediately afterwards. He’s turned away from you, hanging his coat in the closet.
“I can’t wait to play it for you,” He’s still gushing, “You know Sardy doesn’t let me have the demos after I record them, or I’d play it for you off my phone right now. You should’ve heard the solo Bondy came up with. Just straight walked in the studio and went at it-”
“Van,” You try again, a little louder. “That’s great about the song, but I really need to talk to you.”
Van freezes, clearly hearing the urgency in your voice before slowly shutting the closet door and turning towards you. Worry is etched into his features.
Now’s your moment, but it feels like in dreams when you want to scream and nothing comes out. You’re sitting on the couch, pale as a ghost, fingers twisted together on your lap. And you’re trying so hard to say the words, but they keep getting stuck in your throat, and you can hear your heartbeat in your ears like you’re going to faint.
“What?” Van prods, still waiting for an explanation.
“I have to tell you something,” You manage, trying to ease yourself into the news. You twist your fingers together tighter, your heart racing.
“What’s going on? Are you pregnant?”
As soon as he says it your jaw drops. “How did you know?”
Van looks stunned for a moment before barking out a quick, surprised laugh. “I didn’t! It’s just the only guess I had for how nervous you look!”
Relief floods over you at Van finally being in the loop, but your jaw is still hanging open. “How the fuck did you get it right on the first try?”
Van shakes his head in disbelief. As you get up from the couch his expression looks like it’s equal parts bewildered, amazed, and shocked.
“How- I can’t-” He struggles to find the right words as he opens his arms for you to tuck yourself against his chest, pulling you in close. “I thought you were on the pill!”
“I was on antibiotics for two weeks from that awful UTI,” You explain into his shirt. “It interferes with birth control.”
“Christ. Are you kidding? I never knew that,” He muses, rocking your bodies back and forth. “This is mental. Like, are you sure? You’re absolutely positive?”
You pull away from his hug so that you can start to tell him about your realizations today, and naturally both of you hold the other’s arms, keeping each other close. Van’s eyebrows are furrowed, his brain still trying to catch up like yours has done the last three hours. His eyes search your face for any sign you’re joking, but there’s no mistaking the pure joy underneath it all, his aspirations about having a family of his own desperately close to being realized.
“I’m sure,” You tell him, tears starting to prickle at the back of your eyes. You couldn’t be more grateful for his positive reaction to the news, but the thought that you might not be ready for a child- that you might steal Van’s excitement right out from under him- hurts. “I took a test and everything.”
“No fucking way. Where is it?”
Van follows you to the bathroom, where you pass over the two tests on the sink. He stares at them for a long time, as if suspicious that he’s reading them wrong. He passes them back slowly, carefully, still blinking at you in disbelief.
“This is mental,” He says again, clearly lost for words.
Your worries get the best of you then, your tears bubbling over.
“I don’t know what to do,” You confess, hoping he gets the message. That he hears your uncertainty, the question you’ve been wrestling with since two pieces of plastic have served you your fate. “I don’t know what we’re gonna do.” You thought that moving cross-country away from your entire family was the biggest and hardest decision you’ve ever made in your life, and now you were faced with something even greater.
You can tell Van understands because he starts to look more serious, sliding into the problem-solving mode that makes him the incredible songwriter and frontman he is. He tugs you into another hug in the cramped space of the bathroom.
“We just found out,” He points out. “This feels like a fucking dream if I’m honest.”
“I read so much shit on Google today,” You sniffle against him. “My brain feels like soup.”
“Aw, love,” Van rubs his palm up and down over your upper back before he pulls away to look at your face. “Let’s make some coffee and you can tell me what you’re thinking, yeah?”
You nod, your mouth wobbling from your cry. Then, for a quick moment the storm clears, and you let out a watery laugh.
“I can’t believe you just guessed it,” You shake your head in amazement.
“I can’t believe I did either!” Van exclaims. “Just lookin’ at you, I could tell it was something big. I dunno!”
Your laughter bubbles up again, and this time it doesn’t stop. You feel hysterical from the emotional roller coaster of today, and Van laughs along, the two of you clinging to each other for dear life as you find the hilarity in today’s circumstances. When you get a good look at his face you can see tears brimming in his eyes, too, both of you experiencing the biggest surprise of your lives.

Where to Buy Xanax Online in UK
Xanax, also known as Alprazolam, is a top-selling medication from the benzodiazepine family. Used to help treat those suffering from anxiety and panic disorders, Xanax is the most-prescribed medication for psychiatric use in the US.
In the UK, the drug is not so readily available. The NHS does not cover Xanax, so it must be obtained with a private prescription. Valium is often prescribed for those suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GDA) in the UK as a replacement for Xanax. Valium, however, is slower-acting and 10 times weaker than Xanax, making it less effective for those in need of a near-instantaneous relief from their anxiety. For this reason, it is best to buy Xanax online in UK-trusted, reputable websites, such as Wellwise Pharmacy.
What is Xanax Used For?
Xanax is most-often used to manage Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) symptoms, though it can also be used for short-term relief of severe cases of anxiety. Xanax can reduce the frequency of panic attacks and the intensity of those suffering from GAD or Social Anxiety Disorder, improving overall quality of life.
Characteristic signs of GAD must persist for 6 or more months. They include the following symptoms:
• unrealistic worry
• excessive anxiety
• continual anxiety regarding two or more chronic circumstances
Additionally, Xanax is effective at managing panic disorder. Panic disorder causes regular panic attacks that affect one’s day-to-day life. Panic attacks are short moments of uncontrollable fear and tend to last for approximately 10 minutes. Characteristic signs of a panic attack include suffering from four or more of the following symptoms:
• Motor tension– shakiness, twitches, muscle tension, fatigue, restlessness, unexplainable aches, and trembling
• Autonomic hyperactivity– shortness of breath, heart palpitations, increased heartrate, sweating, dry mouth, clammy or cold hands, feeling dizzy or light-headed, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, “lump in the throat” sensation, difficulty swallowing, flushes or chills, and frequent urination
• Vigilance and scanning– increased levels of adrenaline, feelings of high-alert, heightened startle reflex, difficulty concentrating, going “blank” in the mind, difficulty falling or staying asleep, and irritability
• Intrusive thoughts– feeling like one’s dying, fear of losing control, fear of going crazy
How Does Xanax Work?
The drug works by changing the way chemicals are released in the brain. Xanax alters chemical imbalances by reducing the neurotransmission of GABA neurotransmitters, which affects the relationship between dopamine receptors. This in turn decreases the barrier between the parts of the brain that produce and receive dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of reward and pleasure. The effect is a feeling of calmness and relaxation.
How to Take Xanax
Before starting Xanax, thoroughly read the medical instructions that were provided by your doctor. Xanax is an oral medication in tablet form. Your dosage is determined by your doctor, who will have factored in your condition, age, and prior medical history to come up with the best starting dose. It is common to take 2-4 mg of Xanax daily. You may start at a lower dose, as many doctors prefer to gradually increase Xanax until the desired effect is obtained.
Though Xanax is typically only prescribed for short-term usage, some doctors and patients may find the medication worth using for longer. If you plan on using this medication for more than eight weeks, your doctor will need to regularly check on your anxiety status to discuss whether or not to consider switching to a longer-lasting treatment option.
Warnings and Precautions
Prior to using Xanax, your doctor needs to have a thorough medical history to ensure minimal side effects. Let your doctor know about your alcohol consumption habits, whether or not you have asthma or suffer from breathing problems, and your current medications, even if they are over-the-counter.
You should not take Xanax if you:
• have acute, narrow-angle glaucoma
• take either of the drugs itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral)
• are allergic to Xanax or any of the other benzodiazepines
• have liver or kidney disease
• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• are under the age of 18
• have hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or if you become pregnant during the time in which you are using Xanax, inform your doctor right away, as benzodiazepines can potentially cause congenital abnormalities, especially during the first trimester. Infants born while their mothers were taking benzodiazepines may experience respiratory problems and even withdrawal symptoms. It is also recommended to avoid breastfeeding while using Xanax.
Depression
If you suffer from severe depression, your doctor should have precautions in place due to Xanax’s psychotropic properties. Be extra cautious of any suicidal thoughts, and let your doctor know if you experience any.
Side Effects
As with any drug, Xanax can cause a variety of side effects. Avoid driving and operating machinery until you know how you respond to the drug. Xanax can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and an increase in saliva, though these side effects typically disappear after initial use.
Do not decrease or suddenly stop using Xanax without first talking with your doctor, as this may cause withdrawal symptoms such as seizures. Notify your doctor immediately if you begin to feel withdrawal effects. Likewise, never increase your dosage without discussing with your doctor. Xanax can cause emotional and physical dependence in those using it and must be monitored and regulated closely to avoid unwanted dependency.
Mania
A common side effect of Xanax is mania or hypomania, which is often linked to those with depression. Due to its fast-acting relief of anxiety, and the euphoric high, Xanax has the potential to be abused by those using it.
When taken as instructed by your doctor, Xanax can be a safe medication for treating anxiety.
Easily Purchase Your Meds Online

A DISABLED dad has slammed "selfish" sellers on eBay listing a single pack of paracetamol for £2,550 or 12 tiny bottles of hand sanitiser for £13,600. Matthew Allen, from Suffolk, was forced to scour the website for extra pain medication after coronavirus panic buyers stripped the shelves of his local stores.

One person has managed to get bids up to £2,550 for one pack of paracetamol tabletsCredit: Ebay It comes after 2,626 cases of the deadly bug have hit the UK, with 108 deaths. People have been stockpiling and panic buying supplies, despite supermarket and government pleas not to do so. But after the Prime Minister told the nation to stay in as much as possible, and is expected to lockdown London by the end of the week, Brits have hit the shops to get food and medicine. The 33-year-old former tattoo artist told the Sun Online: "The people robbing the needy to make a little extra cash when it could mean people lives is criminal. "The people stockpiling because they are panicked, ok I get it, but at least it's to keep them and family safe especially if people are to be isolated you then know you have stuff in. "But I was disgusted to see people making money off the back of vulnerable and scared people whether its masks, sanitiser or tablets. "It shows that we are not Great Britain any more and the people that lived and died within world war 2 would be turning in their graves to see how selfish the generations are that where given a life by these people that sacrificed so much." Matthew suffers with colitis and crohn's and has an ileostomy. He told the Sun Online he uses paracetamol as well as stronger painkillers so he doesn't have to take so much of the more powerful medication and protect his stomach.
The demand has seen some second-hand sellers take advantage of the low stock, such as putting hand gel which costs 50p in Lidl on eBay for £40. Items listed for huge amounts do not always sell for that and sometimes they are joke listings or bids. However, the NHS and Public Health England say the best way to stop the spread of coronavirus is simply to wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds. Matthew added: "So to have it that people are purchasing it to make money in a war time situation shows how selfish the UK has become, and really maybe something like this will bring people back down to earth and realise with massive loss to respect what we have and grateful for the basics in life. "I know people need money but we all do and we don't want to be taking it from people that need it." An eBay spokesperson said: "eBay does not tolerate sellers exploiting other users. For several weeks we have had filters in place designed to prevent the listing of items at unreasonably inflated prices and are constantly updating our measures to control listings as the situation evolves. "We continue to work closely with authorities including Trading Standards, and our international security teams have been working around the clock to remove any unreasonably priced listings. "Where sellers are attempting to circumvent our filters, we are taking necessary enforcement action.” It comes as the armed forces are poised to step in to take over hotels and run them as hospitals as the UK's death rate spirals and Boris Johnson prepares to deploy sweeping shutdown measures.
BRITS IN LOCKDOWN
Yesterday Mr Johnson announced schools will close from Friday with A-Level and GCSE exams cancelled. London's transport lockdown will start from today with 40 Tube stations closed until further notice and the rest of the capital's transport network to be scaled back dramatically. Further powers are also being looked at to keep people at home in the coming days and troops will be deployed in a bid to help the nation handle the escalating crisis. Today we told how a frustrated Iceland worker lashed out at an elderly customer as coronavirus panic-buying chaos grips supermarkets across the country. Nearby, customers are seen stockpiling toilet paper onto the belt at the checkouts of the store. The older man appears to be holding up the queue on the other side of the cashier. rustrated staff can be repeatedly heard telling the older customer to leave the store, saying: “Get out! Get out!”. The PM promised a £350bn 'war-time' bailout to stop coronavirus from wrecking the economy. His people’s bailout will be the biggest rescue package in peacetime.

Christmas to offer salvation for brands suffering from poor summer sales – if they get mobile right
Christmas could be a boon for retailers as well as this fella
While UK retail sales growth declined this summer, new research suggests that the Christmas season will be an opportunity to recoup lost sales – so long as they focus on getting mobile right, as that is where the customers are.
According to CJ Affiliate’s latest Holiday Intelligence Report, orders and revenue saw double or triple digit growth over the 2018 Christmas period. Black Friday continued to maintain dominance, boasting the most orders in one day, the report also revealed the emergence of other higher sales conversion periods that will likely play an even bigger role in 2019.
The weekend following Black Friday saw more customer conversions from online ads, with order growth increasing by a third (33%) and sales by almost a quarter (24%). Cyber Monday on the other hand saw a 4% decrease in order growth, demonstrating how British consumers like to shop in their free time at the weekend.
“We have heard from our clients that it’s been a tough summer for many brands, leaving marketers with a strong desire to maximise returns during the rest of the year, especially over the Christmas period,” says Jules Bazley, Regional Vice President at CJ Affiliate. “To do this, marketers need to look beyond the recognised sales spikes during Black Friday and Cyber Monday and should instead play the long game this year, executing more balanced campaigns before, during and after the perceived Christmas season peak, with well-placed promotions to target the right consumers at the right time with the right content.”
According to the report, UK shoppers also panic-buy Christmas presents last minute, with the third week of December accounting for the greatest increase in orders and revenue growth year-on-year. This week boasted triple digit growth (111%) in holiday orders in 2018 and almost doubled its revenue and share of holiday sales (45%).
Boxing Day sales continue to play an important role for British consumers, with year-on-year order growth matching that of Black Friday (20%) last year and generating greater year-on-year revenue growth at 8%, compared to 5% growth on Black Friday.
Mobile rules in the UK
A growing trend in recent years, mobile devices have now officially overtaken desktops and Brits in particular like to shop on the go. Almost half (46%) of UK holiday sales orders in 2018 were made on smartphones, beating purchases made on desktops for the first time and highlighting the need to not only push mobile-first marketing approaches but to also consistently ensure a great mobile user experience throughout the customer journey, including easy mobile checkout options, to convert more shoppers this year.
Tablets, on the other hand, are losing popularity with Brits – usage is down 36% compared with the previous year.
Mobile also dominated amongst publishers. Share of order and sales were boosted most by mobile publishers, followed by ad networks and social publishers who both boasted a 40% increase in share of orders, demonstrating shoppers’ increasing reliance on shopping assistants, product reviews and product discovery platforms. In contrast, email publishers saw the biggest decline in order and revenue share.
“Mobile promotions and easy mobile checkout will win out this year,” concludes Bazley. “However, this alone will not cut it, consumers are savvier, carrying out their own research, checking reviews and they expect a lot more from their shopping experience. To really make the most of holiday season opportunities this year, marketers need to be executing campaigns that put consumers’ needs first through creating a seamless, holistic shopping experience across all devices.”

Travel to and Day One in London
After six long years, I am making my way back to Europe for another adventure, casting my family aside and replacing them with my boyfriend Mike. We have never been on an overseas trip together (except for a New Zealand ski trip back in high school - but does it really count when you are accompanied by another 40+ students and teachers?) so decided to book a fun European trip together to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. Mike has never been to Europe before so I have been looking forward to showing him all of the sights.
If my friend’s speeches at my 21st birthday party were anything to go by, people know that I am organised. So I have planned this holiday meticulously, researching the best places to eat, drink, shop, ways of getting around and even writing out the directions to some destinations heaven forbid my phone/internet stops working for a second.
The downside to being so anal organised is that the moment something doesn’t go to plan, I can tend to fall a part just a teensy, tiny bit.
So comes Thursday 12th of September, our day of departure. Mike and I are trying to mentally prepare ourselves for the 17 hour direct flight to London that we are about to undertake and are doing so by trying to distract ourselves. We start the day relatively easy, gathering together the few final items we need to pack, purchasing the foreign currency we need, having Macca’s for lunch and planning to give our house a deep clean so we can arrive home to a fresh house.
About four hours before we are meant to depart I realise that I need to check-in to our flight online to save us some extra time at the airport. So I log into the good ol’ Qantas app, enter in all the required passport details and hit enter. To my shock and horror (and definitely through no fault of my own) I see that our selected seats have randomly changed from those which I booked back in February, making Mike and I sit now 11 rows away from each other.
Immediately panic sets in as I dread to think of having to sit sandwiched between two strangers for 17 hours - NO THANK YOU. I attempt to call Qantas only to be greeted with an hour and a half wait time, hang up and instead have a bit of a panic cry as I feel the first of my plans fall away.
Yes, I am always this dramatic.
Anyways, after some reassurance from mum that everything was going to be fine and her advice to pop a quick half a tablet of Valium to take the edge off, we make off for the airport at around 3.30pm with my lovely mother driving us in. She tries to give me reassurance that everything was going to be fine and that it wasn’t the end of the world, as much as I was convinced that it was.
Fortunately a lovely Qantas woman was immediately able to assist us and solved our issue, getting Mike and I sitting back together again. CRISIS AVERTED.
We are the first ones to arrive at the gate after a smooth security check and settle in for the wait, either playing phone games or watching Friends reruns. Finally just after 6pm we are called forward to board the flight and before we know it, we are on our way.
I personally found the direct flight to be somewhat of a breeze, however this was likely due to the fact I managed to get around 5 hours of sleep compared to Mike’s 0.
We arrive in London at around 4:30am, around half an hour earlier than expected. After the longest ever wait at baggage claim, we easily get through customs (because no one was there), get a little lost searching for the train we need to catch, before hopping on the underground heading to our accommodation.
We arrive at our accommodation in Fulham at 7am, and have to use our combined brain power to work out the self check in lock, to which we had been given the incorrect code. When we finally gained entry to the apartment, we finally felt like we could relax and get settled.
Our apartment is small but perfect for just the two of us. We had to practice locking each other out to make sure that the main door lock worked, and the shower/bath requires a bit of a steep climb to get into, but otherwise everything is great.
Not wanting to immediately fall asleep and completely screw up our sleeping patterns, we decide to push through the tiredness and head out in search for second breakfast after an unsatisfying fruit salad that was served on the plane.
We got showered and dressed for the day and hopped on the tube into town. After a packed tube journey (it was morning rush hour), our first stop was at a bakery called “Bread Ahead” where we order two chocolate croissants and a chocolate brownie to share. The bakery is super cute, with a trendy design aesthetic and all it’s cakes and pastries laid out on display on huge cake stands. We head next door to Soho Grind, a coffee bar, where Mike orders a much needed flat white coffee, and I a classic hot chocolate.
We set up camp at a local park and tuck into breakfast. When we were done we started to wander, there were two stores close by that I particularly wanted to check out today so we headed off in the direction of the first - Liberty London.
At this time it is still only 9:30am in the morning, but it feels like it should be mid-afternoon considering we had already been up for around 6 hours before this. We realise that we are too early for the shops, most of which open at either 10 or 11am, so we just continue to wander around for a while. We come across the mega Topshop on Oxford Street and head inside, going to the mens’s section.
As we unpacked this morning, we realised that we stupidly left Mike’s fancy leather jacket at home so he was in need of finding a replacement jacket quickly to avoid wearing his hoodie all the time. We fortunately find for him a perfectly fitting black, felt trench coat. Unfortunately we were dumb and forgot that we would have to now carry this huge Topshop bag around with us all day - great.
After Topshop we walk around a bit more checking out the few other stores hat were open before heading back to Liberty London and begin to explore. We make our way through the levels, admiring the old fashioned architecture and layout and the many quirky items and beautiful clothing ranges that they have in stock. I tell you, if I was a millionaire I would own that store.
We next walk over to Dover Street Market, a really trendy and alternative clothing store, with incredible visual merchandising displays and whose shop assistants all look like models dressed in super eccentric outfits. Here I buy a wallet that I had been eyeing off for several months, and I am finally happy that I have a “showbag” of my own to match Mike.
We loved just walking around the city, all the buildings are so beautifully designed and there was just so much activity going on with people everywhere. Everyone is dressed so stylishly here, not just the women but the men too - it was great to see so much self expression in everyone’s outfits!
Mike was dying from exhaustion and I had subjected him to enough shopping torture, so we headed into a local Five Guys burger store for some lunch. The last time I had Five Guys was in America, and much to my delight, the UK version tasted the exact same as how I remembered it.
After resting our legs for a moment, we set off on our walk to get to Hyde Park. We arrive after about 15 minutes, and begin to walk through gardens that were lush and green and teeming with pigeons and geese. We find these quirky fold out beach chairs to sit on and decided to set up camp for a while just to chill out. However we were approached by a man with an eftpos machine who told us that it was 1.80 pounds to sit in the chairs. To this we laughed and said no way, instead finding a shaded spot on the grass to sit.
After relaxing for a while, we decided to call it quits and head back to our flat, ready to pass out. We first made a stop to our local grocery to stock up on some essentials and are now just sitting in bed, trying to distract ourselves with anything that will keep us awake until 7pm UK time.
Unlikely.
