Won’t Go Slowly // 23
One // Two  // Three // Four // Five // Six // Seven // Eight // Nine // Ten // Eleven // Twelve // Thirteen // Fourteen // Fifteen // Sixteen // Seventeen // Eighteen // Nineteen// Twenty // Twenty One // Twenty Two
A/N:    Yay, it’s a he or a she! Also, this is the gift that I envisioned that Tyler sent :)
You knew that the sex of your baby didn't really matter, of course.  He or she would be whomever they were meant to be.
But you were still curious and excited to find out, knowing that somehow that would make it that much more real.  It was another milestone you'd been waiting for.
You were laying on the exam table, waiting for the ultrasound tech to arrive, after already having had your appointment with Dr. Stevens and gone through all the routine appointment stuff.  Both your sister and Danielle were with you, and you were pretty sure Tyler would be there too if he was in town, but you had promised you'd let him know. In anticipation, you pulled your shirt up, scrunch the fabric up right underneath your bra.
"Wow," Nicole said, "you've got, like, the cutest little belly."
"I know," you smiled, smoothing your hand over it.  It wasn't really noticeable, probably, unless you were looking for it, but it was definately there.  When the tech came in and introduced herself, you couldn't wipe the smile off your face.
"Alright," she said, spreading the cold gel on your belly, "we'll take a look at baby's organs first and take some measurements.  You wanted to know the sex, right?"
"Yes, please," you said, still smiling.
"Alright, we'll see if baby cooperates and let's us see between its legs."
Oh.  That part hadn't really occurred to you, that you might not get to find out today, when you'd been looking forward to it.  You were mentally trying to connect with the baby inside of you, as if you could somehow encourage it to open its legs.  And then the profile image of your baby popped up on the screen, and you forgot it all, because it didn't matter.  Your breath was immediately taken away, tears springing to your eyes, because it actually looked like a baby, not like a....well, like a blob.  It had a visible head, and nose, and lips, and legs and arms.
The tech started poking at your belly gently with the wand.  "C'mon, little one, move your hand so I can measure your head."
You laughed, although it seemed to work, the baby's hand floating away from its head.  You turned your head to look behind you, "Could one of you guys take a video on my phone?" you asked, "Please?"
Your poor sister, however, had tears running down her face.  "Awe, Nic," you said, reaching for her hand.  She sniffed, taking a sniff and stepping closer to you, placing a hand on your shoulder.
The sound of the heartbeat filled the room, which was quickly becoming your favourite sound.  You couldn't take your eyes off the screen, or believe how much the baby was moving around inside of you. You couldn't feel it, yet, of course, but you were pretty sure that would be amazing, too.
"Okay, let's try and take a peek in between the legs," the tech said, and you could feel the wand moving around on your belly, watching the screen, looking at what you assumed was the baby's bum, judging by the legs and the little feet and the toes.  Oh god, your baby had toes.
"Oh wow," the tech said, like she was surprised, like she'd never seen anything like it before. Your head immediately snapped towards her, trying to interpret her face.
"Is everything okay?"
"Oh, yes, yes," she said quickly, like she was sorry for making you worry, like she'd gone off script, smiling down at you, "Baby's just...he's making it very apparent."
"He?" you asked, your eyes filling with tears once more, and you could feel both your sister and Danielle's hands on your arm.
"Yeah," she said, "he's most definately a boy.  No question."
You were now crying and laughing at the same time, watching him move on the screen.  Him.  He.  He was an 'it' no more.
You barely even noticed what the tech said after that, other than the fact that he was healthy.
Once she left, and you were getting up, wiping the tears from your eyes, you looked both seriously at Nicole and Danielle, "Don't either of you dare say anything to Tyler about her reaction," you said, "he'll never shut up about it."
"I'm not talking to him about his dick," Nicole said, her face looking utterly disgusted, and Danielle had a rather similar look on her face.
You were planning to call Tyler to tell him, but it was...rather obvious from the pictures, so you instead took a picture of that, texting it to him as your sister drove you home, although you were a little surprised when he texted you back almost immediately, because you thought he was in...New York?  Or was it New Jersey? You figured he should be doing something.
Tyler: Is that a penis??!!!!
The next text then had approximately 15 eggplant emojis.
Tyler: Told ya, good genes.
You rolled your eyes, setting your phone back in your bag, and your sister smiled over at you.  "Guess I can say I have a nephew now."
"Yeah, you can," you said, as another piece clicked in that made it all the more real.
You were unlocking your front door, when Nicole reached down behind the planter on your front steps, pulling something out.  "You've got a package," she said, handing you the box, and you frowned, because you didn't remember ordering anything. But, you recognized the writing immediately  without even needing to look at the return address to see who it was from.
"It's from Tyler," you said, with a slight eye roll.  At least the box was fairly small, so there couldn't be that many Dallas Stars baby clothes inside.
You went to the kitchen, pulling a knife from your knife block, carefully slicing through the tape.  You may not be a huge hockey fan, but you weren't going to cut the fabric,  knowing just how happy it'd make him to see your baby wearing green and white.
But, once the box slipped open, you were taken aback to see black and white.  And then you teared up, hand going to your chest when you noticed the patterns, black outlines of little Labrador retriever faces, on white fabric.  You started pulling the items out, which were so soft: a little hat which was so small you could hardly believe it, leggings, and a receiving blanket. All perfectly unisex.
"Okay, that's adorable," Nicole said, looking over your shoulder.
"I know," you said, folding it back up, setting the hat on top, fixing the little knot.
"He actually has good taste," she said, and you laughed, already pulling out your phone to call him.
"It's so cute, too, because his dogs follow me around like crazy," you said, "like they know I'm pregnant."
"Hey boy mama," Tyler answered the phone, and you couldn't help but smile.
"Hey," you responded, "So, I just got home, and there was a package here."
"Oh, really?" he asked playfully, "And do you like it?"
"Like it?" you asked, running your hand over the fabric once more, "I love it.   He's wearing it when he comes home from the hospital."
"Really?" Tyler said, "Isn't that, like a big deal though?"
"Yeah," you said, you supposed it was. "It's perfect though. Thank you."
"Good.  If you didn't like it I was going to say it was from the dogs.  But, since you do, it was all my idea," he said, and you laughed, "Can dogs be uncles?"
"I don't know," you laughed, "I mean, if you want, I guess?  I don't think there's any rules."
"I don't want," he said adamantly, "If your kid's anything like you, he'll probably like them more than me, and I really can't compete with that.  They can be cousins, or whatever."
"Okay," you laughed, starting to clean up the packaging, "Did you remember my address?"
"Nah, I asked my mom."
"You asked your mom?"
"Yeah, she's got it in her address book thingy," he said, "and since you wouldn't give me your address...."
"I'm glad you did.  I love it so much."  You ran your hand over the fabric again.  You hadn't even bought any baby clothes yet, because you'd been thinking it was too soon (not to mention the way you were feeling wasn't very conducive to shopping), but you couldn't think of a better first outfit. "I thought it was going to be Stars stuff."
"Oh, don't worry, babe, I've got tons of that,"  Tyler said, in a way that made it sound like you might need a separate dresser just for that, "baby clothes are really confusing, though.  Like, there's different months and newborn and  everything.  So I just bought it all."
"Tyler!"
"He needs it." Tyler insisted, "Also, they don't make jerseys for kids until they're, like 12 months, but I'm seeing if I can get a custom one made.  They even have little hats, like the ones for grown-ups but so tiny. I'll bring it all with me at Christmas. "
"Tyler, you don't need to do all of that.  I love what you sent already, it's so thoughtful."
"Yes, I do.  He needs to represent his favourite uncle," Tyler said, "Anyways, with the other stuff, I got, like, three months, I think? The lady at the store said it was better because newborn doesn't fit all newborns? And they can wear it longer? So hopefully it fits."
"I'll duct tape it on if I have to," you said, looking at them again. "I can actually probably put a onesie over them rather than underneath if they're super big. I'd rather him be able to wear them for a longer time anyways.  And the blanket? Everything's so soft."
"Organic cotton," he bragged, and you heard a sound like he was pushing open a door, probably heading down to the bus.  "How was the rest of your appointment? Everything good?"
"Yep.  I gained a pound." You were quite proud of this fact, because you'd been losing or maintaining your weight up to this point with how sick you'd been.  Hopefully now that you into your second trimester, things would start to turn around.
"It's probably all your kid's dick."
"Tyler!"
He was giggling so hard you could barely make out the 'sorry', hearing a rush of activity behind him, and then a few voices.  "Hey, babe, I gotta get going."
"Okay.  Have a good game."
"Yeah, I'll try to 'skate around with the puck and stuff'," he said, "are you going to watch?"
" Well, Nicole's staying for dinner and  I think she wants to watch The Bachelor or Bachelorette, whatever it is," you said, lowering your voice a little, "I'll probably fall asleep though."
"Maybe the baby wants to watch the game though.  Don't deprive him of that," Tyler said, and you could hear more chatter surrounding him.  "I'll text you when I'm back at the hotel alright? If you're up from your nap, we can watch Grey's."
"Okay," you said, and Tyler made an extremely exaggerated kissing noise before hanging up the phone.  Settling your phone in your pocket, you gathered up the gift, walking into the room that was now your office, but wouldn't be for much longer, placing these new items in what was your soon-to-be child's room.  Your son's room.
**
It took probably a good week for it to actually sink in that you were having a baby boy.  You were just getting to the halfway point of your pregnancy, which seemed crazy, even though you were still having a bit of a tough time believing this was all real.
You'd been trying to sleep for the past 90 minutes, but all you'd accomplished was just rolling back and forth from side to side, trying to find a comfortable position.  Your hips had this dull, deep, constant ache, and you could swear you could feel your hips widening, even though you knew, logically, that that wasn't possible.
Your elbow hit against the mattress and you groaned with frustration. You almost want to cry, because you were tired and you just wanted to rest, cozy up and shut your eyes, but it was like the mattress was too soft or something.  You vaguely wondered if your couch was firmer, but then a much, much better idea came to mind.
You sat up, throwing your robe over your pyjamas and shoving your phone and charger in your pocket.  Taking a quick detour through your kitchen to grab a bag of chips and a bottle of juice in case you got hungry, you picked up your keys, and slipped your feet into your slippers, heading out to your car.
It was dark, obviously, when you pulled up, but you managed to unlock the front door using the light from your cell phone.  Locking the door behind you, you walked throughout the house, turning lights on and opening windows just a because it was kind of stuffy.  You were putting your juice in the fridge when you noticed lights from the next door neighbour's house and paused, wondering if they would notice, so you pulled your phone out and sent out a text.
You: I broke into your house.
You went into the bedroom next, the blankets still messed up on the bed and dog toys strewn across the sheets, and you'd remembered coming to his house before you'd had to take them all to the airport, and the dogs had abandoned their toys when you laid down on the bed, opting to give you attention instead.  Everything was still in the same place.  You left the toys where they were, laying down, as your phone vibrated.
Tyler: ?????
Tyler: You have a key?
Tyler: what the hell
You laughed under your breath, typing back a response: I used the key.
Tyler: Oh
Tyler: No boys allowed  😉
You: Just the one I have inside of me.
Your hand ran over your face when you realized what you said, rolling onto your back and typing back a response quickly: I meant the baby.
Tyler: 😂😂
Your face was still flaming red when Tyler's name flashed across your phone.  Of course he was calling. Maybe he would only interrogate you about why you were in his house.
"Hi," you answered.
"How's that boy inside you?" He asked immediately.
"Uhh..."
"The baby," he said, as if he had to clarify.
"I don't know," you said, smoothing your hand over your belly. "I can't, like, see him, but I assume he's good."
"So you miss me that much that you had to go over to my house?"
"No, my hips hurt and your mattress is firmer."
Tyler laughed. "So you're just using taking advantage of our friendship so you can sleep in my bed?"
"Maybe..." you mused, and then you reconsidered, thinking you probably should have asked him first. Even though he used his key to get into your place without asking all the time. "Is that okay?"
"Yes," he laughed, "Just clean up after yourself.  I spent hours cleaning the whole thing before I left.  Don't trash the place. Is it helping?"
"Yeah," you answered, "I ordered a pregnancy pillow, that should help, but it's not here yet."
"Yeah, well at least you know where to find a good mattress until it gets there," he said, "How are you though?"
"Good."
"Babe...." he whined.
"What?"
"I want a real answer."
"That was a real answer," you said, "I'm good."
"You've been sick," he said, "It just magically went away?"
"Well, no," you said, "But it's kind of better?  Most days.  I just have to make sure I eat regularly or it gets bad.  And I've been getting headaches, but they're not really that bad.  I'm good."
"You can complain, you know," Tyler said. "You've got to feel like shit.  And you barely say a word."
"Because I'm good.  It's a good sign," you said.  It had been rougher at first, but now that you were past the first trimester and had been able to find out what your body did and didn't like during pregnancy, it was easier.
"And you've been keeping busy?" he asked, and you had to laugh, because it sounded like you were talking to your grandmother.
"Yes," you answered, "And how are you?"
"Me? I'm good."
"But Babe...." you mimicked.
"I'm not pregnant," Tyler said, "Although, now that you mention it, it has been awhile since I've had my period."
"You should get that checked out," you said, "How was your day, though?"
"How was your day?" he responded.
"Why do we always have to talk about me?"
"Because your life is so much more exciting than mine."
"What? No it's not," you said.  You literally did the exact same thing everyday.  Did he forget what he did for a living?
"Yeah, it is.  You're having a baby. What's more exciting than that?"
"Well, he's not here yet," you said, "I want to hear about your day."
"I mean, I'm at home, so it was pretty boring.  We just had practice."
"All day?" you questioned and he huffed.
"Well, no..."
"What'd you do after?"
"Ummm...I...talked to my mom for a bit actually," he said, "Oh yeah, I meant to ask you, what are you doing for American Thanksgiving?"
"Being Canadian?" you said.  You hadn't even really done much for Canadian Thanksgiving though, either, because you'd been way too sick at that point.
"Ha ha," Tyler said, clearly unamused, "We're doing American Thanksgiving at my Mom's this year because I couldn't come for the Canadian one and I have a couple of days off.  She was going to invite you, I don't know if she has yet? But, you coming?"
She hadn't invited you yet, but you were sure she would.  Truth be told, you'd kind of been avoiding her a little bit since you'd seen her at the game.  Not because you didn't want to spend time with her, of course, but because you were worried about slipping and giving it away.  And it was pretty hard to avoid when your symptoms were so apparent, so you'd had to come up with excuses the couple of times she'd invited you to dinner.  You felt kind of bad about it, but you knew if Tyler was there, he'd cover for you, and you wouldn't be the only one there who knew.  "Yeah, sure.  Should I bring anything?"
"Uh, no," He said firmly, "Unless you want to bring your own grilled cheese, I guess."
"I can eat other stuff now," you said.  At least mashed potatoes, you could handle.  And definately pumpkin pie.
"Good," Tyler said, and he made an oof noise and you could only assume the dogs had just jumped on him, "Oh yeah, I'm bringing the pups, too."
"Oooh, you are?" you asked excitedly.
"Yeah, I'm just going to pretend that you were that happy to hear I'm coming."
"I am," you said, "It's just been longer since I've gotten to see them.  And I get to talk to you, I don't get to talk to them."
"Yeah, I'll try to teach them to text," he offered, "They're gonna be so psyched to see you."
"And you're not?"
"I mean, I'll try not to jump all over you but no promises," he said, "It'll be nice to see when we can actually hang out other than stand around in a hallway though."
"Yeah, it really will," you smiled even though he couldn't see you.  "What else did you do?"
"Uh, I don't know.  Made dinner?"
"What did you have?" you asked, settling your side and curling up, pulling the blanket around you.
"Steak, and vegetables, and some rice."
He was about to ask you what you had when you interrupted him. "What else did you do?"
"I mean, I took the dogs for a walk."
"To the park?" you asked, letting your eyes fall closed, a yawn escaping your mouth.
"Yes," he laughed lightly, like he couldn't believe you were asking him so many questions.  "You sound like you're going to fall asleep.  Should I go?"
"No," you said, "I want to hear about your day. What happened at the park?  Did they make any friends?"
"Well," Tyler said, and you pictured him settling back into the couch, his feet probably propped up on the coffee table, scratching dogs behind the ears with his hand, "There was this other dog there, a whippet, I think, that they were playing with for awhile.  And then this golden retriever showed up..."
You let your breathing grow deeper, as you listened to him speak, your responses become less and less frequent, until you finally fell asleep.

Somewhere in our collection of home videos there is one of me sewing my newborn daughter’s first ever Halloween costume. I vaguely remember looking up as my husband provided voice over commentary while moving the camera closer.  I was engrossed in lining up the black and yellow fleece stripes and while they were not complicated to stitch together, my frustration level was rising. I’m fairly certain the distinguishing feature of that long lost video is me swearing and attempting to muster a faint smile so my daughter would not think her mother unhappy with the task. But, sadly, I was.
Although, I persevered and must say it did turn out to be one adorable little bee costume which I still have. Maybe my future grandchildren will wear it again someday and I won’t actually have to sew something new for them.
As our return to normal is delayed and the CDC recommends cloth face coverings when in public spaces where social distancing is not possible, I had a dilemma. To sew or not to sew.
Clearly, it wasn’t a tough choice. While I could probably sew some face masks for my family with hopefully a minimum of profanity, I’d rather work on my other crafts and hobbies instead. But somehow, I don’t think scrapbooking a paper face mask would meet the recommended guidelines.
Fortunately, there are some wonderful Maine crafters and artisans who’ve stepped up and are providing a lot of great options when it comes to face coverings. Below is a completely random and absolutely incomplete list of ten local Maine face mask makers and their beautiful products picked solely because I thought they were pretty.
(#1) Tree and Vine
Tree and Vine produces colorful costume pieces for children including butterfly wings and eye masks. They are beautiful, whimsical and guaranteed to help a child’s imagination soar.  I’ve blogged about this local business before in my post T is for Tree + Vine | Costumes that match a child’s imagination.  They’ve now switched the majority of production over to cloth mask making and are offering face masks in lots of fun prints.
The reversible cloth masks have around-the-ear elastic for keeping them comfortably in place. Masks can be purchased on her Etsy shop. $11.50.

This textile artist creates gorgeous graphic prints in engaging colors. They sell a variety of products on their website from tea towels to tote bags. I’m partial to her makeup bags. They just launched a collaboration with LL Bean. They have also been intermittently offering a limited number of face masks in some of their signature prints.
The masks are made of linen or bark cloth lined with muslin and made with cotton ties.  You can purchase the face masks on their website. $25.00.

(#3) Catalyst for Change
This local clothing and accessories manufacturer donates a portion of all sales to local charities. I’m a big fan of their t-shirts and have purchased a few from their shirt a day collection including one with “support local” messaging. Supporting local has never been more important than it is right now.
They are now offering a one-piece face mask made from lightweight jersey fabric. You can purchase them on their website. $4.50.

(#4) ANNE RIGGS DESIGNS
This sustainable goods manufacturer makes reusable products like cloth “paper” towels and snack bags using organic fabrics.  I have some of her bowl covers which work as a great alternative to plastic wrap for keeping leftovers covered. They’re well made and beautiful.
Her face masks are made of all organic cotton and lined with organic muslin. They have elastic loops that go around your ears. They can be purchased from her Etsy shop. $15.00.

(#6) JENNIE BLUE
I love the black and white sketch designs from this local artist. While her Etsy shop is focused on her tea towels and ceramics, she recently started offering face masks. Her first round sold out quickly so you’ll need to act fast when her next round goes up for sale. I’m partial to the lobster print one. It  feels like home to me.
Each face mask is made from a tea towel of one of her original illustrations. They have three separate layers: two of tea towel lined with one layer of flannel. There are four ties to attach the mask. While I don’t mind ear loops on masks, my husband has struggled a bit with that style. I think this design with ties might work better.  The masks can be purchased on her Etsy site. $22.00.

(#8) SPRUCE AND PINE
This Etsy shop makes reusable products for zero waste living.  They have some super cute and environmentally friendly zero waste cutlery kits that are on my wish list. They also started making face masks. The prints are simple and elegant.
The masks are reversible, double layered with your choice of print on the outside and contrasting cotton fabric on the inside. They have elastic ear loops. You can purchase them from her Etsy shop. $14.00.

(#9) BLYND TOWN
This Maine based Etsy site has a large selection of face masks in fun prints and patterns.  I recently purchased the one below. It was shipped super quick and the quality is excellent. I’m looking forward to wearing it out soon.
Their face masks have a double  layer with coordinating fabric for added support, strength and coverage. They have elastic ear bands. Masks can be purchased on the Etsy site. $12.00.
(#10) BOWTIE.COM
This fun local business makes unique, colorful bow-ties, neckties and other men’s accessories and they’ve now added some equally fun face masks to their product line.
The masks are three layers of 100% pre-washed cotton. They are pleated and tie with elastics which can be worn encircling your head, or you can cut them to the lengths you prefer to loop around your ears.  Face masks can be purchased from their website. $22.00

I’ve included pricing with the information above as a reference point but please be sure to check the sellers shops to confirm as pricing may vary.
Maine MEP also has a list going of local face mask manufacturers:  Retail Sales of Cloth Face Covers. While there is some small overlap with the makers I’ve highlighted here, their list focuses more on larger manufacturers and is worth checking out too.
** IMPORTANT ** These masks are NOT medical-grade and as stated on the Etsy website where many of them are sold, these masks are not intended to “mitigate, prevent, treat, diagnose or cure any disease or health condition.”1
For specific guidance on recommendations around face coverings, please see the CDC website.
While the thought of wearing a face mask can be overwhelming as it reinforces the seriousness of the pandemic that we are experiencing, for me personally, anything I can do to reduce the chance of potentially making someone else sick is worth any inconvenience.
It also  makes it a little more palatable when there are so many amazing choices available for masks that have been crafted with love from Maine. They bring a smile to my covered face.
Do you know of other local manufacturers who are making cloth face masks?

The Scene Is Never What It Used to Be: A Retrospect on Glamour and Steampunk
Tumblr media
Can I make some old/femme/goth/steampunk/the-scene-is-never-what-it-used-to-be noises? Back in my day, a hundred years ago when I was the con head for SalonCon, Steampunk was still being defined. Like, to the point that I needed to make my assistant (The Baby) explain what exactly it was, many times. I was interested in Neo-Victoria for many reasons but I also became interested in The Past that Never Was (Steampunk) for many reasons coming from an intersectional feminist standpoint.  Mostly, we became involved in Steampunk because The Baby was interested in it and we couldn't afford to pay her and it was a reasonably easy way to compensate her for all her time and energy.  We wanted her to have a space to enjoy herself as a thank you for her hard work.
This was . . .ten years ago.
Penny Dreadful wouldn't be out for another seven years and cybergoth was most fashionable at the club, along with a modern high gothic aesthetic which had a lot of velvet but also a lot of straps and snaps and spikes. Chokers had been out of fashion for a while as we were in the late aughts so you couldn't just pop over to Forever 21/Hot Topic for one.
I'm not a costumer, I'm not a seamstress. I was also working a day job while running SalonCon.  I trying to make a thing go that did not previously exist. I would try to explain to local shop owners and club owners (because flyering was still a thing) and even to various ellllll-jaaaaay groups but it was never what the Lolita Goths wanted and it was never kinky enough for the kinksters and it didn't have enough tweet-tweet-stomp-thump for the general goth person. I mean, it was hard to sell a concept then that was very, oh hai!  You have to dress up in some fashion, manners matter here and you will be expected to use your brain!  Everyone just wanted to drink and dance.  Now everyone wants to think and not dance, but that's a story for another time.  On my part, there was a lot of crying and vomiting because who knew where the money would come from to pay for everything to make SalonCon go? It was as mysterious as death.
So, I was flat broke and completely stressed out from all of this. I knew I wanted to get people to think and think hard about a lot of nebulous things - What does it mean to dress up glamorously without a dress code?  (an issue that would cause many writer friends much angst for reading at SalonCon.  Some, I simply lent clothes to, others I reassured)  If this is a past that never was, where do people of color, the lbgt community, people with disabilities and other minority communities fit?   Why would people want to learn ballroom dancing, sit at a formal tea, engage in theoretical debate together?  Who even wanted to do this?  It turns out, ten years later, a lot of people do!  Year one, it was a very hard sell.  A very, very hard sell.  I was basically telling vendors, um, I can't promise very much but maybe eventually?  You don't have much to lose!  Tables aren't expensive!  You can say you were here at the beginning!  As someone who is also a merchant, I can tell you that I wouldn't have touched us with a ten foot pole.  But there were a lot of brave and kind vendors who wanted to try something new and see what it looked like.  This very foreign concept of having manners, acting/dressing glamorously and using one's brain in public.
I knew I couldn't get away with what my male con head/club event counterparts could get away with. They could wear jeans and a t shirt because they had to work very hard.  I had to learn to run in a corset and heels because I was also the figurehead.  If I was going to insist on art, beauty and truth at a hotel in New Jersey, I was going to need to look the part. I was broke, I was a minority as a femme con head and no one knew what Neo-Victoria was, let alone Steampunk which was somehow even harder to explain at the time because there were no visual cues yet.  Now, it's a completely different story.  My mom could probably take a stab at explaining Steampunk, having been to SalonCon and now having seen it in pop culture.
I needed to have A Girl to help me look somewhat respectable for this. But it was never A Girl, it was always many girls. April1's cousin who did my hair, Fae who did my make up, The Girl from Damaged Goods who lent me lingerie, The Girl from Art of Adornment who made a tiny hat and velvet choker for me (both of which I still have), The Girl from Retroscope who made me a taffeta high-low skirt which are now ubitiquous to Steampunk but then was a concept that required many prototypes and as much money as I could afford to spend at the time (roughly, $150 - if you know anything about concept fashion, you understand that she was doing me a giant favor, even ten years ago) and took several months to make (which I still have as well).  It was a village of Girl(s) who would put me together enough to do this.
I realize now, this is what glamour magic looks like at its heart. This thing that isn't a thing yet.  You are hesitantly explaining a concept to the people closest to you and then to acquaintances and then to people who run in adjunct circles and then strangers.  You are waiting for them to smack you down really hard because this is something new.  People either can immediately wrap their heads around this new concept you are trying to give birth to and it immediately blossoms into life with them or it's a seedling that shoots tentative roots as they think about it and become interested or it never comes out of its seed casing and it lies there, dormant and useless.  You start there with glamour magic.  You bring the concept into the universe and see what it looks like, if it starts to look like something else in other people.  You see what common threads twine among them.  You see if strangers tell other strangers about it.  Is your mythos strong enough to stand on its wobbly colt feet?  Then you start spinning, spinning, spinning.  You are making offerings at midnight in the crossroads because you cannot sleep without bringing this Thing into being.  You are obsessed.  You beg and plead with your goddesses, your spirits, your ancestors.  You sob, you bleed, you offer anything you have and then just a little bit more.  You sell yourself by the inch.  You realize you don't know how to get to this Thing but you will learn.  You will do anything you have to do.  And then you start meeting people who understand what you are trying to do and they will act as midwives because they are struck by this fever too.  And they will offer help in whatever way they can - burlesque, Tesla coil experiments, their voices, their songs, their organization, their hands.  And it's this beautiful process, your glamour made real through you, through loved ones, through strangers.
Glamour magic has been like that for me and I keep talking about it and I keep writing about it and I keep performing it.  I'm in my "third trimester" before the book comes out.  I'm talking about it on podcasts, I'm blogging about it, I'm setting up events, I'm finishing my final edits.  I'm terrified about it, but it's coming and nothing can stop it.  It's bringing me right back to the beginning, right back to Steampunk.  That ex I can never quite fully quit, no matter how hard I try.
It's been a very long time and I've been away for a very long time for many many reasons. Imagine my surprise that now one can simply go to Amazon and get a bustle skirt made out of actual cotton fabric (a "real" fabric, per April2 which makes it v. precious) for $30, delivered to your doorstep via Prime in two days. Two. Days.
I will confess, at first I was completely indignant. A real bustle skirt in two days for $30. Velvet chokers at Forever 21 for $3. A $10 elaborate lace necklace. A $15 lace shrug. Arm warmers! Leg warmers! All for pennies. What about all the time, vomit and money I spent on all of my things?
The truth is, coming back to Steampunk many years later, I still feel a bit of an impostor. My palms are sweating as I wonder what to wear.  Arm warmers?  Cliche!  Goggles?  Double cliche!!!! I will never be Steampunk enough even if I was one of the midwives of Steampunk. Which is silly, isn't it? Like, how exciting is it that there are Steampunk cliches?  I can go to Michaels and buy things to make my own Steampunk jewelry whether I was a sixteen year old girl or a forty year old dude.  I can even use a coupon.  And I find myself in love that everyone can have access to Steampunk now, whether it's from a one-woman-Etsy-sweatshop, whether you are sketching and designing your outfit yourself or pick up a gear at a retail chain, it's there for everyone to love.
Steampunk and Neo-Victoria were never about being completely "true" to a long gone time period (unless that was your thing, then rock out), it was never about looking like a cookie cutter to something we were making up as we were going along.  It wasn't about bankrupting yourself to keep up with the Clockwork Joneses. It was about being as true to your vision as you could be. It was about what made you feel glamourous inside and out.
Find your compass rose no matter how many or few people are doing that outward glamour thing that you are doing.
If I'm being honest, the roots of my book* started here, ten years ago, in this very uncertain place. Feeling out of my depths with this enterprise I had taken on that I couldn't even market properly because it wasn't quite real yet.  Feeling out of my depth in my outward glamour presentation in life but especially here in this place.  I felt very judged as a women in a leadership role both in how I presented myself physically and how "good" my con was.
My friend Ri had to hold me that first year.  I was too sick to even drink at the afterparty (me!  too sick to drink at a party!  28 year old Deb!). I trembled v. ferociously in his arms, chanting "I can't do this, I will never do this again, I will never do this again, I will never do this again, it's too much, Ri, it's too much." and he would laaaaaaaaaaaaaugh v. merrily and say, "Of course you will! It's what we do, we Make things. You will keep doing this! You will keep Making things."
And he was right, I did it for as long as I could, until I knew it would break me. I rocked the mike on MTV, I was interviewed by The New York Times and I worked as hard as I could to bring as many people up in their respective areas of Steampunk expertise as I could along the way. I kept my moral compass no matter how hard it was at times and oh at times it was very hard.  It was a whirlwind and I never knew who or what I was supposed to be.  Was I Janet's assistant who proofed resumes for pharma marketing suits?  Was I April1's friend being scolded because I didn't check in enough on my staff?  Was I The Con Head of SalonCon, getting recognized in sweats on the streets of New Hope with a bagel hanging out of my mouth?  Was I some kind of second rate proto-fashion icon who was also a bit on the fat side and not terribly good at doing her own hair?  Was I Josh's soon-to-be-blushing-bride who was also his even-sooner-to-be-ex-wife?  Was I my mother's daughter who did not sit up straight enough at tea at SalonCon?
And I find myself very unexpectedly back in that same place, ten years later. And I find myself asked to do things I swore I would never again do . . .and saying yes. Here I am, the derelict Steampunk daughter, back at the doorstep, suitcase in hand.  And I feel that same hurricane inside me that I felt ten years ago again, relaunched by my sudden unexpected return to Steampunk but also with the impending launch of my book.  It feels much the same, though perhaps I'm a little steadier now.  People closest to me acting in ways I don't expect, sudden opportunities that require me to think quickly and act even faster, the uncertainty in not knowing if I will amount to anything, if my book will amount to anything in my publisher's eyes, if these glamour dreams I've been dreaming for so long will result in strangers recognizing me when I am out and telling me or even worse, saying nothing at all so I am spotted a la Gossip Girl and I'm not even aware of it, the constant hamster wheel in my head repeatedly asking what does it even mean to be famous  and how do you even know if you are?  I slammed the door on that hurricane ten years ago, just before Steampunk became mainstream only a few years later.  Truth be told, I was relieved.
But here I am again, right back where I started, my life an uncertain swirl of glamour, writing and Steampunk.  This time, I won't slam the door.  This time I'll fling it open even wider, hollering, "Here I am!  Come and get me, boys!"

Can Recycled Rags Fix Fashion’s Waste Problem?
Tucked away in the bowels of the Brooklyn Army Terminal is a 4,000-square-foot warehouse filled from wall to wall and floor to ceiling with garbage bags. They contain castoffs from New York’s fashion studios: mock-up pockets ripped from sample jeans, swatches in next season’s paisley print.
There is denim here in every wash, spandex in every hue. Dig through one bag and it is possible to find a little rug of carmine-colored fur and yards of gray pinstripe wool suiting. In another, embroidered patches from GapKids and spools of ribbon in velvet and lace.
Nearly 6,000 pounds of textile scraps arrive each week to be inspected, sorted and recycled by five staffers and many more volunteers at FabScrap, the nonprofit behind this operation. Since 2016, it has helped New York’s fashion studios recycle their design-room discards — the mutilated garments, dead-stock rolls and swatches that designers use to pick materials and assess prototypes.
So far, the organization has collected close to half a million pounds of fabric from the design studios of large retailers like Express, J. Crew and Marc Jacobs and independent clothiers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Their discards have been shredded and recycled into stuffing and insulation or resold to fashion students, educators and artists.
“So much waste gets created in the design process,” said Jessica Schreiber, the executive director of FabScrap. “But it’s the tip of the iceberg.”
As climate change has accelerated, corporations of all kinds have become increasingly preoccupied with their sustainability cred. Four-fifths of consumers feel strongly that companies should implement programs to improve the environment, according to a recent Nielsen study.
Clothing companies in particular have faced pressure to change, from politicians, protesters at fashion shows and shoppers of all ages who want to reduce their carbon footprints. The fashion industry is often erroneously cited as the second-most polluting business in the world, but overproduction, chemical use, carbon emissions and waste are certainly issues it contends with.
Ms. Schreiber understood early the angst that waste was causing designers. In 2014, she was overseeing the Department of Sanitation’s refashionNYC program, which collects old clothing and textiles at farmers’ markets and in participating apartment buildings.
She received a string of similar calls from brands including J. Crew, Eileen Fisher, Express, Mara Hoffman and Marc Jacobs. The companies were sitting on piles of seasonal prints and swatches that couldn’t be donated but shouldn’t be thrown out.
“It really hit a nerve with people,” Ms. Schreiber said. Half of the designers had resorted to hoarding scraps under their desks as they tried — and failed — to find places to give them away. “There was a lot of guilt,” she said, and no clear path.
Spinning a Sustainable Yarn
For a designer, cutting down on waste isn’t as simple as recycling a few bags of fabric every week. It requires overhauling the brand’s business model: forgoing seasonal collections; eschewing — or being rejected by — traditional retailers that accept only large orders and standard packaging; selling directly to consumers; and getting design teams to think about the sustainability and supply chain of each material and garment.
Dana Davis, the vice president of sustainability at Mara Hoffman and an early FabScrap adopter, remembered feeling anxious about how the company could better deal with waste. “It just felt burdensome,” she said. But after a conversation with Ms. Hoffman, the designer, it became clear to them that change was necessary.
The company began shipping swimwear in compostable bags and made long-term commitments to the materials it purchased. To cut excess inventory, the brand moved away from the fashion cycle and the industry norm of placing orders on projection.
There are still challenges — like making sure consumers and retailers actually compost the bags — but other brands are getting on board with changes at the design, manufacturing and distributional levels.
It’s hard to pinpoint how much waste is created before a garment even reaches the consumer. Factory waste is not tracked by outside agencies. Supply chains are now so complex and reliant on remote contractors and subcontractors that the companies can’t account for all the materials.
Even if a brand wanted to find out how much fabric waste it created, “it would be very difficult for them to research that, because different factories might have different processes,” said Timo Rinassen, an assistant professor of sustainability at Parsons School of Design.
Wendy Waugh, the senior vice president of sustainability at Theory and a FabScrap client, knew that determining the brand’s total waste would be a challenge. The company works with many different fibers, which are sourced from all over the world. The company’s “Good Wool,” for instances, comes from a farm in Tasmania, and is scoured, spun and dyed at a mill in Italy before it is warehoused and sold around the world.
After a fiber is harvested and spun, it is sent to a factory where it is cut, dyed and trimmed. Reverse Resources, a software company that works with major apparel factories in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, found that 20 percent of the fabric used in the cut-make-trim phase is ultimately thrown out.
Linda Greer, the founder of the Clean by Design program and a former toxicologist at the N.R.D.C., has advised many garment and dyeing factories in China. She said that brands frequently reject fabrics because they don’t match the desired shade exactly.
“I’ve seen so many ‘weeping piles’ of miscolored fabric,” Ms. Greer said. “Sometimes they can touch it up. And sometimes they throw it away.”
Once a garment is complete, it can present another problem: excess inventory. In some cases those garments are incinerated, which prevents them from being resold at a discount, Mr. Rinassen said.
Last year, Burberry burned $37 million of clothing and cosmetics to maintain “brand value.” The previous year, H&M came under scrutiny after it was reported to have incinerated 60 tons of unsold merchandise.
Stephanie Benedetto founded Queen of Raw, an online marketplace for dead-stock fabrics and a FabScrap partner, after seeing how much manufactured material was sitting in warehouses ($120 billion worth, by her estimate). At that volume, she said, waste isn’t just environmentally irresponsible — it’s “a C.F.O. issue.”
Apparently, also, a marketing issue. Fashion companies have been quick to invest in environmentally friendly marketing. There have been capsule collections derived from natural fibers like orange pulp (Salvatore Ferragamo), pineapple leaves (H&M), grape skin (& Other Stories) and mushrooms (Stella McCartney), and a wide selection of recycled polyester made from fishing nets (Burberry) and beach-strewn plastic bottles (Adidas).
These usually amount to little more than P.R. gambits and short-term fixes.
Samantha MacBride, an assistant professor at Baruch College and a former waste management professional, said that the ideas big brands implement often reflect a lack of understanding about waste management.
The way to minimize trash, she said, isn’t by devising a green marketing strategy or using new technological fixes. “The key is to produce less,” she said.
Sorting Through Scraps
Standing on the FabScrap floor, it is impossible not to feel overwhelmed by the enormous pile of trash.
Ms. Schreiber noted that the bags in the facility were “almost irrelevant in the scheme of what is probably generated.” None of the overstocked garments languishing in company warehouses are here. Nor are the huge quantities of fabric that are tossed from the factory floor.
Beneath the heap, seven volunteers slowly and manually sorted by material every scrap that came in. They inspected and removed labels and rubbed the fabric between their fingers. It could not have been further from the mechanized processes at a recycling plant, which employ feats of engineering — eddy currents, magnets and near-infrared scanners — to identify and categorize various types of metals, plastic and paper.
There is no technology in use that can detect the differences between, say, spandex and wool. “The infrastructure is lacking,” Ms. Schreiber said. “Like the fact that the sorting still all happens by hand is bonkers.”
The recycling processes are similarly decades behind. Today, there are a number of companies, like Evrnu and WornAgain, that are just beginning to recycle fibers, a process that involves shredding and dissolving the fibers into a pulp that can be respun into a new fabric.
Ms. Schreiber said that if clothing scraps were treated “as a waste-commodity stream, not a nonprofit-managed material, we would be further along in the tech.”
In the back corner of the warehouse is one of FabScrap’s two shops, where it sells many of the larger pieces its employees and volunteers find among the scraps. On any given day, some fashion students stop by, shopping and drawing inspiration from the ends of dead-stock rolls that are cheaper here than at fabric stores in the city.
Jasmine Velazquez, a fashion student at F.I.T., studied some green leather that she wanted to use for an upcoming assignment. “I’d rather buy leather from here than support the industry like that. Sustainability should be more important to me because I am a student,” she said.
In June, FabScrap opened a second shop, on a block in the garment district teeming with secondhand shops, and just a stone’s throw from F.I.T.
Camille Tagle, the director of reuse and partnership at FabScrap and a former evening wear designer at Pamella Roland, pointed out some of the special fabrics that filled the shelves. There were rolls of baby blue suede and white cotton with geometric fil coupĂŠ accents. Above the shelves were nearly full cones of thread in colors that evoked a Pantone guide.
“If it doesn’t match by a fraction of a shade, it’s out,” she said.
One piece in particular, a shawl’s length of pink crinkle chiffon with sequined flowers, caught her eye. Each flower had at least three or four colors arranged in a different pattern. “It takes a lot of time,” Ms. Tagle said. “A designer had to communicate all of those details to the mill.”
A steady traffic of students and hobbyists came in to peruse the shelves and scour the scrap bins. Olivia Koval, who is pursuing an M.F.A. in textiles at Parsons, left the shop with a tote bag full of mutilated jeans and denim scraps. She planned to overdye and felt them together to make a larger fabric.
“For people to feel inspired by something that was headed for the trash is really important for me,” Ms. Tagle said.
Since opening six months ago, the Chelsea store has served 4,800 customers. Next year, FabScrap plans to set up operations on the West Coast.
In spite of what she has built, Ms. Schreiber is measured about FabScrap’s success. “This is such a small group of self-selecting companies, and this is a very niche part of their waste stream,” she said. “That’s what’s so frustrating.”

Is Swaddling Good For Babies At Night?
Swaddling has been used as a method of caring for a newborn for centuries. It makes a baby feel safe and secure as if they are in their mother’s womb. It also gives a feeling of snuggled close to their mums. It helps them relax and sleep better at nights. Swaddling can be done in many ways. The modern and convenient method is to use a swaddle bag. Some swaddle bags also have holes for arms to move around. It has helped many babies with neurological or psychological problems, colic or preemies. It helps babies sleep on their backs as it is highly recommended to avoid the sudden infant death syndrome. Some babies also find it difficult to sleep on their backs because they wake due to sudden movements or startling sounds produced by them. When they are swaddled, they do not wake easily even at nights when there is minimum sound.
Tumblr media
Now you know about ideal swaddling conditions. Organic jersey cotton baby clothes team at Dream with Baker has always suggested thinking before you act in case of swaddling. Anna Baker’s organic cotton newborn baby clothes collection has all types of clothing to suit every occasion. Soft to touch and safe to the skin are the standards a newborn’s family should look for while shopping for swaddles or cloths.
Babies have extremely delicate skin and wearing a synthetic or a cloth made out of non-cotton fabric may damage their tender skin.
