At least two people are dead after a shooting at a Madison, Wisconsin, school on Monday, according to a statement from police.
The statement came shortly after a news conference at which police mistakenly reported four people were killed in the shooting.
The suspect in the school shooting is also dead, police said.
“This is a ever-evolving situation,” Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said at the news conference. “So there’s a lot of work that has to be done, and we’re committed to doing that work. We just ask for your patience.”
Barnes declined to give additional details about if the victims were teachers or students until families are notified.
This post has been updated with the statement from Madison Police.

REMEMBERING THE ABUNDANT LIFE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL VICTIMS.
Information below the cut, please be respectful. This is a recent shooting- and for the town of Madison, WI, and all those affected; this wound is still incredibly fresh. I’m sharing this for memorial and informational purposes only, because they deserve to be remembered for who they were as people- not the tragedy that took their lives.
The two victims who tragically lost their lives at Monday’s (12/16) shooting at Abundant Life Christian School have had their names released. While I know this community is primarily dedicated to the interest behind the perpetrators, I believe it’s only right to tell the victims’ stories as well.
ERIN WEST (LEFT): Erin West was the 42 year old in-house substitute teacher, as well as substitute coordinator for ALCS. More importantly, she was a mother. She was very proud of her children- and was described as “very excited to see her daughters grow up, she wanted to see who they were going to be and what they were going to do with their lives.”
She was described by family, friends, and fellow staff as intelligent, but also very funny. She genuinely loved and cared for her students, always doing what she could to help them when they needed it- not just academically. She was skilled in her profession, and described as “graceful.” A devout Christian woman, who, if there is a Heaven- I’m confident she’s there.
Rest In Peace.
RUBI VERGARA (RIGHT): Rubi Vergara, a 14 year old freshman at ALCS, who had been attending the school since kindergarten. Rubi liked to read, and enjoyed art- and was very good at creating it. On top of Rubi’s artistic talent, she also had a knack for music. She sang, as well as played the keyboard, in the family worship band. Rubi also volunteered with various organizations. She was also apart of choir at ALCS, and those who knew her described her as having a “beautiful voice.” She was quiet, but very friendly. She had two pets; a cat, named Ginger, and a dog, named Coco. Rubi was also a devout Christian- and once again, if there is a Heaven, I know Rubi is there.
Rest In Peace.
If you would like to, and are able to, please consider making a donation to the victims and their families, as well as those who were injured in the attack, you can text “HELP4ALCS” to 40403. Alternatively, you can click this, and it will take you to the website to donate directly.

Alex Bollinger at LGBTQ Nation:
Out Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) had some choice words for his former colleague, the disgraced Matt Gaetz, after the former Florida Republican congressman baselessly suggested that the Wisconsin school shooter was transgender. Gaetz was responding to a statement from President Joe Biden calling for Congress to enact gun safety laws in the wake of so many school shootings. Anti-LGBTQ+ hate influencer Chaya Raichik posted the statement and said Biden wanted “gun control.” “What about trans control instead?” Gaetz responded. Many on the right on social media – as often happens after school shootings now – have baselessly claimed that the shooter was transgender. She was not, there is no reason to believe that she was, and local police have asked people to stop saying that. This set off Pocan, who chairs the LGBTQ+ Congress Equality Caucus. The shooting in Madison occurred in his congressional district. “To all the idiots who claimed the shooter was trans with no information whatsoever to believe that, f**k off,” Pocan wrote. “Your ignorance speaks volumes. Your hate is consuming your brains (or what’s left of them).”
Gaetz resigned from the House of Representatives last month just days before the House Ethics Committee was scheduled to release the findings from its investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use – which included accusations of child sex trafficking – against Gaetz. Since he quit the House, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has said that the committee will not release its report. Gaetz was announced as the nominee for attorney general for the next administration, but he withdrew from the nomination process, saying that his nomination had become a “distraction” to the incoming administration.
Happy to see Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) tell Pedo Gaetz to “fuck off” for pushing the “trans shooter” hoax.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A man illegally brought a loaded handgun into the Wisconsin Capitol, demanding to see Gov. Tony Evers, and returned at night with an assault rifle after posting bail, a spokesperson for the state said Thursday.
The man, who was shirtless and had a holstered handgun, approached the governor’s office on the first floor of the Capitol around 2 p.m. Wednesday, state Department of Administration spokesperson Tatyana Warrick said. The man was demanding to see the governor, who was not in the building at the time, Warrick said.
A Capitol police officer sits at a desk outside of a suite of rooms that includes the governor’s office, conference room and offices for the attorney general.
The man was taken into custody for openly carrying a firearm in the Capitol, which is against the law, Warrick said. Weapons can be brought into the Capitol if they are concealed and the person has a valid permit. The man arrested did not have a concealed carry permit, Warrick said.
The man was booked into the Dane Count Jail but later posted bail.
He returned to the outside of the Capitol shortly before 9 p.m., three hours after the building closed, with a loaded assault-style rifle and a collapsible police baton in his backpack, Warrick said. He again demanded to see the governor and was taken into custody.
Madison police reported Thursday that the man, who was not named, was taken into protective custody and taken to the hospital. A spokesperson for the police department did not return an email seeking additional details.
“Capitol Police took control of the situation and so it’s over,” Evers told reporters Thursday.
He declined to comment on what security changes may be enacted for him or the Capitol building.
“I never, ever talk about what my security detail does or what they’re planning on doing,” Evers said. “But anytime something like this happens, obviously they reevaluate.”
The incident is just the latest in a series of violent threats against public officials.
Evers, a Democrat, was on a hit list of a gunman suspected of fatally shooting a retired county judge at his Wisconsin home in 2022. Others on that list included Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Whitmer was the target of a kidnapping plot in 2020.
Warrick said no immediate changes to security in the Capitol or for the governor were planned. The public has free access to the Capitol daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are no metal detectors.
We’re going to stop these anti-LGBTQ attacks on our trans kids. And we’re going to do it together

Mapping LGBTQ+ Spaces through the Years
by Chloe Foor, Student Historian 2022/2024
Hello everyone! Welcome to a little project update from your local Student Historian in Residence. The last two months have been filled with research, data collection, and learning new software programs. I’ve had a great time, and I can’t wait to share what I’ve been doing.
I spent the first few weeks of October doing more research, scouring both the Archives and the Internet to find more locations significant to LGBTQ+ Madisonians over the years. While in the Archives, I looked at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Folder 1 Subject File, which has materials from the 1990s to the mid-2010s (see University of Wisconsin-Madison Subject Files collection. uac69, Box 75, Folder 10. University of Wisconsin-Madison Archives, Madison, WI.). The most interesting things to me was a document written by Joe Elder on Reflection on the LGBTQ movement on Campus, which he wrote in the aftermath of the 2016 Orlando Nightclub Shooting. It provided some really interesting perspectives on the LGBTQ+ Rights movement in Madison.
Online, my main source of information is the Wisconsin LGBTQ+ History Project, which I wrote more about in my last blog post. I didn’t realize that they had digitized copies of old guides that listed LGBTQ+ friendly businesses as far back as 1963. It was fascinating to go through those and find the locations that queer people frequented in the past. The most interesting place that I found that was listed was called Apple Island, which I have seen before in archival research, but I didn't know it was in Madison. Apple Island was a community organization created to promote women's culture, and it was reported that 90% of the clientele were lesbians. My favorite part of the research project is finding these lesser-known spaces, and I can’t wait for more people to be able to easily access them through my project!
Outside of finding new “spaces,” I spent some time filling in the spreadsheet I use to keep track of each location. For each space, I list the title, address, significance, and years it was active, but sometimes it's hard to find all of that information on the first pass through. Sometimes, I'll just write the title and a short description, and then I can go back through later and fill in the rest. Now, all 165 entries are fully fleshed out!
With the spreadsheet being fully populated, I was ready to import it into ArcGIS, a digital mapping software. It was able to read the spreadsheet into different categories and add every space to a map! In the above image, all of the gray makers are for “Purge,” the blue markers are for “Community,” the orange markers are for “Commercial Area,” the purple markers are for “Healthcare,” the pink markers are for “Media,” the green markers are for “Politics,” and the red markers are for “UW”! If you click on a marker, a pop-up window will display with information about the location, including beginning and end dates as well as a short description.
Here is the pop-up for The Crossing:
In the coming months, I will be working on making a public website to share my research! I also want to host an outreach event in collaboration with the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center and Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honors Society. I’m sure more meetings on the topic will come up in the coming months, and I will make sure to keep you posted! For now, though, that’s all from me!

101 Passing Through Eagle por Kevin Madsen Por Flickr: WSOR 101 passes through Eagle, WI with the four car passenger deadhead move from Horicon to Madison behind the Wissor's A-B-A E-units on 11/11/11. Left Superior on Veteran's Day morning and drove about 5 hours, almost non-stop to Eagle for this shot. Got out of the car while the chasers were arriving and as the clouds were clearing the east. Five minutes later we were treated to this. Good timing for me going to my first Beecherfest, shooting this train on the way. First time I have shot the WSOR E-units. The buildings along the tracks in Eagle remind me of towns further north, like Champion, MI in the U.P.

More and More Is Coming Out About the WI Christian School Shooter
Late on Monday night, authorities identified 15-year-old Natalie "Samantha" Rupnow
as the shooter who slaughtered a student and a teacher at Abundant Life Christian School, a private K-12 academy in Madison, Wisconsin. Six others were wounded, including two students who are still in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Rupnow, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was a student there after reportedly transferring to Abundant Life this academic year.
She went by "Samantha," which was the name that allegedly appeared on her school identification card. However, it appears the suspect was not "transgender," despite initial rumors, but a radical feminist who wanted to annihilate all men.
Soon after news broke of the shooting, Rupnow's friends flagged the X account, "@Postalbrained," purportedly belonging to the shooter. Moments before the mass shooting, the X account—created this month—posted a photograph of an individual flashing the "OK" hand symbol in what looks like a school bathroom. The account also tweeted a link to a manifesto on Google Docs; however, the document was not publicly accessible at the time of publication.
A self-described friend of Rupnow has since taken control of the X account and locked it down.
According to investigative journalist Andy Ngo, she posted a purported "sneak peek" of the manifesto to her Discord account, "@brainedout." In the earlier version, Rupnow allegedly discussed a desire to "exterminate" all males, including infants and the elderly, in a rant apparently inspired by extremist culture among fringe social media circles.
"[W]omen are the only hope for this wretched world," the declaration read, saying some women have also been "brainwashed" to "worship these f**king parasites." The writing further lamented these women who have "internalized the patriarchy" and are "always begging for male approval and validation."
"Its disgusting," the preview continued. "I realize the truth men are irredeemable [...] They cant be reformed or redeemed. Theyre a f**king scourge upon the earth. The only solution is to total exterminate them [...] Every single male must be wiped out, from babies to the elderly. Only then can women be free to create a new world."
"ill be a pioneer," the post's author declared. "ill be the first to take the first step. i dont care if theyr fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, teachers, police, and especially n—ers or politicians. ive been craving to kill them all."
"This is my mission," the writer went on. "[O]nly when their parasitic sludge has been expunged from this earth is when then the world will be clean and women can start over. It's the only way."
Reduxx's editor-in-chief Anna Slatz published all six pages of Rupnow's alleged manifesto—provided by a source claiming to be Rupnow's long-distance boyfriend, whom she had never met in person and only interacted with online.
— pagliacci the hated 🌝 (@Slatzism) December 16, 2024
Rupnow reportedly sent him a full copy of the manifesto, titled "War Against Humanity," via WhatsApp on the day of the shooting. However, he didn't open it until hours later when she was already deceased and the killings were committed.
The manifesto revealed that she had planned to fatally shoot herself a long time ago but felt that carrying out a mass shooting "maybe better for evolution than just one stupid boring suicide."
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said authorities have not been able to verify the manifesto's authenticity but are "certainly aware" that it's been circulating online. Barnes said they've yet to locate "the person who posted it."
Local law enforcement is now working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the writings in question.
Barnes also addressed speculations about the shooter's gender identity. In response to a question asking if Rupnow identified as "transgender," Barnes said that information wasn't of any importance. "Quite frankly, I don't think that's important at all," he replied.
"I don't know whether [Rupnow] was transgender or not," Barnes said, bluntly adding: "I don't think that whatever happened today has anything to do with how she or he or they may have wanted to identify. And I wish people would kind of leave their own personal biases out of this."
"Whether or not she was, he was, they were transgender is something that may come out later, but for what we're doing right now, today, literally eight hours after a mass shooting in a school in Madison, it is of no consequence at this time," he stressed.
According to authorities, Rupnow brought a handgun to school Monday morning and opened fire around 11 a.m. inside a mixed-grade study hall. During the gunfire, a second-grade teacher in a nearby classroom called 911, and police arrived on the scene within three minutes. Rupnow was pronounced dead on the way to a local hospital.
SWAT teams have since raided Rupnow's home, located approximately eight miles north of the school. Officers were seen busting through the front door, knocking it off its hinges, and thoroughly conducting a search of the property, Milwaukee-based WISN reported. Agents used tactical vehicles to swarm the residence, with witnesses reporting what sounded like "a bomb going off" when the entry was breached. Some neighbors saw police throw stun grenades, which detonated with a bright flash and loud bang.
Investigators are still working to determine a motive, which they suspect was "a combination of factors," and where the handgun originated.
An administrator confirmed that the school does not have a resource officer or metal detectors, but stressed that there are "a number of security protocols in place," such as surveillance cameras regularly monitoring the hallways.
"We also have other safety measures throughout the building. But as to a metal detector, no, we do not have," school relations director Barbara Wiers told reporters. "We do abide by the policy of visual scans every morning as students come into the building, so every student is visually scanned before they go [...] up to their locker spaces or into their classrooms."
So far, Rupnow's parents are reportedly cooperating with officials, and police are not looking to criminally charge them in connection to the school shooting "at this time."
Barnes declined to offer additional details about Rupnow, partly out of respect for her family. "He lost someone as well," Barnes said of Rupnow's father. "And so we're not going to rush the information. We'll take our time and make sure we do our due diligence."
Rupnow reportedly posted pictures suggesting she was gifted a handgun for her birthday. Page 4 of the manifesto said the murder weapon was obtained through "lies, manipulation, and my fathers [sic] stupidity."
Much of the manifesto allegedly ranted about Rupnow's strained relationship with her divorced parents, whom she referred to as "scum" and "failures for everything they've done to me."
"My so-called family never included me because I was too weird for them," Rupnow reportedly wrote. She implied her father was an alcoholic and her mother a drug addict who overdosed once when was about 12-years-old: "I don't care if she would have survived or died from it but yet she was still here, doesn't mean she actually was in my life."
Court records confirm that Rupnow bounced between residences, as often as every two to three days, in accordance with the custody agreement. She previously lived primarily with her mother following their first divorce. When they remarried and separated again, shared custody of Rupnow was split more evenly between them. Then, when they ultimately divorced for a third time, Rupnow lived mostly with her father. Rupnow was enrolled in therapy to help guide decisions about which parent she would spend weekends with.
According to Rupnow's alleged online activity, she obsessed extensively over school shooters and death, particularly the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.
In mirror selfies, Rupnow often wore a shirt promoting the KMFDM rock band, whose lyrics (to several songs, such as "Son of a Gun," "Stray Bullet," and "Waste") were referenced by Columbine shooter Eric Harris on his website.
According to Ngo, under the username "@crossixir," Rupnow frequently commented on violent videos uploaded to WatchPeopleDie.TV, a forum for graphic footage depicting suicides and slayings.
Her digital footprint, per Ngo, also includes a number of Spotify playlists featuring themes of suicide and killings as well as a Tumbler account sharing content about mass shooters.
Slatz's manifesto screenshots show she expressed deep admiration for Arda Küçükyetim, a Turkish neo-Nazi who committed a stabbing spree in Eskişehir earlier this year. She said Küçükyetim, whom Rupnow allegedly called "an Ultimate saint," inspired her.
On Page 2 of the manifesto, Rupnow reportedly wrote, "N—ers though, WORSE, once you sleep with one you are one."
