Title: Zanzou Slow Motion (残像スローモーション)
Author/Artist: Janome
Shop: CD + Manga
Release Date: 2021/05/28
Cast:
Furukawa Makoto x Nakazawa Masatomo
Eguchi Takuya
Satou Gen
Tadokoro Hinata
Yasuaki Takumi
Matsuoka Yoshitsugu
Ichikawa Aoi
Yanagi Kouhei
Karino Sho
Synopsis:
What happens when two rival directors who hate each other's guts are forced to share one roof? And what if one of them has a secret he's been harboring for years? Throw in a shared love of movies, BL manga, and an accidental kiss, and you've got the next heart-pumping love story in Midorigaoka High and the sequel to Twilight Out of Focus 1. Jin Kikuchihara, third-year director, main actor, and president of the film club, and second-year director Giichi Ichikawa see eye-to-eye on very little. Jin is flashy, flirty, and focused on keeping everyone happy, while Giichi expects the best from himself and others, and will compromise nothing to see his vision through. Constantly at each other's necks, the two can hardly stand to be in the same club. But what will happen when family trouble forces them to live in the same room? Will their shared interests bring them closer as friends, push them further apart as rivals, or something else entirely?
Review Proper
I love Tasogare Outfocus, but this is actually my favorite Janome.
The second installment curse strikes again!
UGHHHHHHH THIS WAS SO WHOLESOME. Don't get me wrong, Tasogare Outfocus is written pretty decently, but I really don't like how Janome just glossed over Hisashi's SA and grooming like that. It reminds me a lot of Etude vol. 1. I can still get over Etude vol. 1 'cause it's not that uncommon to see in sports and Ichi-san's deal with Futami was given some closure in 2, but given how short Tasogare Outfocus was, Hisashi felt like he just lmao byed his teacher. 😔Doesn't help that it kinda doesn't matter anymore in overlap even though it hasn't been long since it ended. Is my son Hisashi really okay now? 🥹
I'm old, so DK BL doesn't appeal to me that much anymore. It's also hard to find good DK rivalries nowadays that aren't just about fucking or delinquents. Zanzou Slow Motion, however, just checked all the right boxes for the category: simple, no drama, and no loose ends. That coupled with Janome's element of touch?
And can we talk about this monologue?
Ugh.
I will say Jin's suspenders, Ichikawa's snatched waist, and the ABO shout-out greatly influenced my decision too. Y'all should get suspended in high school, not wear suspenders!
Onto the technicalities...
I don't think I've heard these two co-star before (or I just don't remember), so I was a bit skeptical especially 'cause last I heard Makonyan in a DK was in, well... Given as BLCD!Ritsu. And where else did we hear Yuuma star in a DK too? Yuuma as Anime!Ritsu. We just had Given Anime!Ritsu in Tasogare Outfocus being somewhat friends with Ichikawa and now we have BLCD!Ritsu (thanks to ecargmura for catching this!) trying to romance him. They used very different tones for Ritsu, but the vibe was the same overall. THEY'RE THE SAME PERSON. Makonyan and Nakamo also played tops in the last works I heard of them (Makonyan as Takaba in Kurui Naku and Nakamo as Yakumo in Nu:carnival), so I was concerned about a lot of things. Thankfully, however, instead of Makonyan going for his Ritsu tone or his lighter Kimitte Yatsu for a more youthful vibe, he went all shounen in here lmaooo.
His bwakame was so funny it reminded me of this:
I love roasting Makonyan more than any other seiyuu out of fondness, but I'm really proud of how far he's gone. He's gotten so much better in his delivery, and it's obvious in his budding anime career, too.
But...
I didn't expect there would be improvements in his bedding techniques too...
What the fuck was that? HAHAHAHAHAHA. WAIT. No, y'all don't understand. I have most of this man's r-18 otome CDs and BLCDs, and I have never heard him this... this hot before???? Jin is such a smooth flirt, so I had some expectations on the delivery, but FURUKAWA MAKOTO HISSES. HE HISSES!!! SIR IS THIS APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR FOR A HIGH SCHOOL BOY??? THEY DON'T EVEN SHOW THEM DO THE DO FOR MORE THAN A MINUTE??? WHERE WAS THE NEED?!
PUTS THE GODDAMN FU IN FURUKAWA MAKOTO ALRIGHT!
First it was Ono Yuuki, now it's Makonyan. Is Nakamo's ass really that good that his tops go all in???
I admittedly don't have a lot to say about Nakamo because that man always slays. I was afraid that Makonyan would overpower him during their Netflix and chill, but as soon as I had that thought, Nakamo pushed back like??? THEM SHAKIRA HIPS DON'T LIE!
HOW DO I LEGALLY MARRY GINGER RECORDS???
I didn't read the scan or the official English release 'cause I actually had the raws, so I can't vouch for the translation. As for faithfulness to the manga, however, I need to stress that there were a lot of rearranged events and cut dialogue. One notable instance was Ichikawa's message for Jin. It was placed after their kiss in the last chapter, so I believe that these changes are quite significant. It is still possible to read the manga while listening to the BLCD, but I suggest reading the manga once first so you're aware of which pages you need to jump to.
Chil-chil Awards 2022 was a scam 'cause this wasn't nominated for ANYTHING! This might actually just be my favorite BLCD of 2021... and Makonyan was my favorite actor in this series so far. OKITSU AND MAKONYAN REALLY SWITCHED IN THIS LOG HAHAHAHA. Makonyan and Nakamo at least won in my heart. 😌 Definitely listen to this if you're a Makonyan fan or if you're a fan of the series in general. It's also perfect if you're looking for something light and sweet but immersive at the same time. Chesk gives this a 9/10! Only the third 9 after Sonna ni and KD!

Jin:
Tohma: his hands were tied over his head and around his chest and thighs. He isn't able to move while standing except for turning in circles. Jin didn't do much for reactions. He didn't even seem to care as well that Tohma was tied in a way, he just stared as he was smoking a cigarette in one hand as his hands tapped his thighs while he watched Tohma. Eventually, he would drag and have his way before letting Tohma go.
Mido:
Tohma: The Vagastorm students somehow capture this man and had him bond by his arms and kneeling in the lobby in front of everyone. Of course some were in shock and some were just drooling over the fact someone was tied and bound in a way.. Mido was just.... Well.... He was just..... Ummm..... He can't even think right. Mido sighed and went to pick up Tohma and bad him over his shoulders. Many of the Vagastorm students whistled and clapped their hands. Mido was just annoyed and told them to shut up before taking him to the car. He cannot lie, he would like to do it with Tohma with his hands bound together and arms behind. Tohma smiled. "If you want me, have me". HA! Say less!
Sho:
Leo: his chest was wrapped in the ropes, his legs and arms were tied and bending behind him as he was tied in the air and displayed for Sho. Sho took photos. He was taking so many. He got his partner in this position, his cheeks were warm from being exposed like that, and Sho was going to have a fun time messing with Leo. Especially with photo evidence too... Oh boy~!
Towa:
Haru: Haru was bound by his arms. Somehow Taiga got to him and kept him hostage before Towa took him away. Only because she wanted to be near Haru. But tied up, he could let him go. Haru was asking for him to untie him, his arms were tried from being tied behind him and positioned out..... Maybe just one round. And another round too.... Maybe a third ~
Ren:
Haru: In the same position, but Ren does not care.
Leo: His legs were bent to his chest and his arms tied to his legs. His hole was exposed. Ren was staring.. Admiring too.. How did Leo get this way? Ren's pants were tight. Fuck... Ren was taking off his pants... Leo said it was easy access too.
Taiga:
Romeo: Romeo's arms were tied above his head and one leg was tied to be held up. Taiga was smirking as he was watching, he didn't do much, just running his hands on his body... Damn he was beautiful.
Haku:
Subaru: his arms were tied behind his back, the ropes wrapped around his chest and around his breast area to gently wrap around him, spreading his thighs out. Haku was tempted.... He can't go rough - he just can't - or maybe just this one time -
Lyca:
Subaru : Same tied position. Except Lyca was already going rough with his poor body.
Rui:
Edward: he wasn't tied by rope but by anomaly tentacles. He was suspended up in the air by his waist, his arms behind his back and his legs spread out like they shouldn't have been bend. Rui wasn't sure if he should help him down or fuck him.
Jiro:
Yuri: having his hands bound to his legs from behind, being pulled down while standing up and his legs spread out. Jiro was just admiring, he slipped a finger inside to mess with Yuri before he pulled the ropes tighter to tighten it on Yuri.
Lucas isn't on this because he saw his panther Kaito in a way he would feel bad and untie him and free him.

How Summer Rose Became The Werewolf MILF We All Didn’t Know We Needed
I drank the werewolf wine again so now you’re all going to hear about the Summer Rose Grimm werewolf agenda —
OKAY. So we have presumably all noticed the show’s Highly Suspicious way of never saying that Summer actually died: it’s always “took,” “left,” “lost,” “gone,” etc. We’re just going to accept it as a fact that she’s alive.
(To be clear, I don’t believe Summer is or has ever been in the Ever After, considering the questionable reality of the Blacksmith’s first appearance/the effects of Ruby’s mental state on her surroundings in the second.)
In the past, I’ve flirted with the theories that Summer is A) stuck in suspended animation at the bottom of a Grimm pool, or B) trapped as a prisoner in Evernight while Salem feeds off the residual magic in her body, but in recent times I’ve come to be backing the horrible bastard child of both theories.
C) Summer was Grimmified after failing to defeat Salem and, her spirit entirely broken, is now working as her right-hand werewolf to help her end the world because she believes putting Remnant out of its misery is her only option.
Stay with me, here we go.
First off — Why did Summer go to Evernight in the first place?
As Qrow told us, nobody but Summer knows why she left on her last mission, which was apparently not one that Ozpin assigned her. And as Salem told us, when she met and defeated Summer, Summer told her some variation of, “We don't have to kill you to stop you. And we will stop you.”
Silver eyes don’t just kill Grimm. They can also freeze them in permanent stasis. What if Summer got it into her head that she could try and stop Salem that way? Hell, maybe she could even vaporize the Grimm pits along with her! Oz doesn’t believe that she can be stopped directly, only held off, so I don’t believe that that’s a plan of action he would have tried.
But Qrow was right about Summer: she takes the information that Oz gave her, and takes it further. Salem must be killing Silver-Eyed Warriors for a reason: the most obvious one must be that her powers are the key to defeating her. And even leaving aside the very good chances that the only other Silver-Eyed Warrior she knows is her toddler daughter...
She’s the leader, isn’t she? The hero. She’s supposed to take care of everything, help everyone. Now that the idea occurred to her, how is she supposed to turn her back on a whole world that needs her?
(Ruby, with the deepest of sighs: “unfortunately, same hat, Mom”)
If she succeeds, the world will be safe, forever. Her daughters will never have to go through what she and her team have, make the kind of choices she has to make now.
So without her boss or her teammates’ knowledge, off Summer goes to Battle Tendency this bitch, hoping against hope that she’s finally found the answer.
Raven, sitting judgmentally in a tree watching her go:
What happened at Evernight?
We can all guess where this went.
Summer at the door of Evernight Castle:
Salem, who was enjoying a nice cup of tea and a book before this human came trying to assassinate her: what the fuck is going on down there
Summer tries to fight her and quickly finds out that she’s in over her head: Salem gives her the bad news that, surprise, she can’t be killed, didn’t Ozpin tell you, girl?
He did not, but Summer keeps trying: she doesn’t need to kill her to stop her, after all.
I have an image of her managing to Silver-Eye the Grimm out of Salem, and Salem diving right back into the pool of Destruction to power herself up again, but I’ve got no evidence to back that up, I just think that’s what would horrify poor Summer the most.
In the struggle, Summer gets thrown into the Grimm pool too, but to her own horror and Salem’s surprise, it doesn’t kill her like it would any other human.
Divine cannot kill the divine, only alter it. Because of the God of Light’s power inside her, the Grimm pool doesn’t kill Summer, but transforms her into a Grimm hybrid. Salem hasn’t been shocked in eons, but she certainly is watching this horror unfold in front of her.
Salem realizing she can do something new with this interesting little anomaly:
Summer: [SCREAMS OF THE ETERNALLY DAMNED]
Grimm Symbolism
First of all, in “The End of the Beginning,” the scene cuts straight from Summer’s grave, which we know damn well is empty, to Evernight:
It’s pretty obvious where Summer went, and where she actually is.
Second of all, it was pointed out to me that not only does the Grimm color scheme match Team RWBY’s (red, white, yellow, and black are the only ones visible on all of the Grimm), but Summer’s as well:
So far as I can tell, Summer and the Grimm are the only characters to incorporate all four colors into their designs. In any other show I would ignore that, but in RWBY, color symbolism is everything, so it deserves at least a mention.
Does she still have her powers?
That’s completely up in the air for me, and no possible option is any better than the others for Grimm!Summer.
Option 1: she still has her Silver Eyes, but can’t actually use their power.
Option 2: she still has her Silver Eyes, and is still able to use her powers, but at the cost of badly hurting herself thanks to her new, vulnerable Grimm body.
Option 3: she doesn’t have her Silver Eyes at all anymore, and forget about the powers: a Grimm can’t use anti-Grimm abilities by its very nature.
I’m also still up in the air as to what her eyes might look like now that she’s transformed. Personally, I’m picturing her with silver eyes with black sclera: a full moon in a pure black night.
On the other hand, if her eyes were turned red like a Grimm’s or Salem’s, that’s a blood moon!
Why do you think any of this in the first place? Why couldn’t she just be a Hound?
Because of the Unspoken Plan Guarantee. Ruby’s already caught on that something is going on:
So it’s all but guaranteed that when we finally meet Summer, it’s going to be a whole lot worse than what Ruby’s already assuming.
Right now, Ruby thinks that the worst possible way she can find her mother is as a mindless Hound. So the show is going to have to bump the stakes of her eventual reveal up considerably in order to keep it a good surprise. If the audience is already clued into the fact that she’s been transformed into a Grimm, the twist will be that unlike the Hound, she’s kept her mind and is working for Salem willingly.
(Incidentally, this is also the reason why not just anyone other than Oz can destroy Salem: because Nora brought that exact possibility up in “A Night Off”):
...Okay, but why a fucking werewolf?
I’m glad you asked! Not only do werewolves absolutely fuck but there is a boatload of symbolism backing up the idea.
Wolf Symbolism
Among all the corvids and dragons running around in this family, it’s easy to overlook the general wolfiness surrounding Summer and Ruby both, from several different directions.
Little Red Riding Hood
It’s been obvious from volume 1 that one of Ruby’s allusions is Little Red Riding Hood. So isn’t it suspicious that, in volume 9, we’ve seen neither hide nor hair of her Big Bad Wolf?
Clearly, none of the villains we’ve seen so far fit, not even the Hound, who didn’t have the autonomy and was finished off too quickly to be on the wolf’s level. Especially if she ascends to become the Woodsman of her own story as well, it’s long past time for that story’s villain to show up. Summer tried to become the Woodsman herself, taking her axe and slaying the villain so Red Riding Hood could live in peace, but was consumed by and became the Wolf instead.
(And since we do have one character who fits pretty well into the role of Red’s grandmother, who is also eaten by the Wolf...sorry, Maria, I think if you meet Summer you’re going the way of Obi-Wan.)
Odin’s Wolves
Qrow and Raven allude to Huginn and Muninn, the two ravens that Odin uses to gather knowledge from around the world, just as Ozpin gave the Branwens shapeshifting magic so they could serve as his spies. But there were four students on the team he gave special attention. What might Summer and Tai allude to in relation to Oz?
Well, Odin didn’t just have two ravens, he created two wolves as well: Geri and Freki, both of whose names translate to “greedy,” “voracious,” “gluttonous,” and such. They ran out to consume the corpses left on the battlefield (sometimes guided by Huginn and Muninn) and guide fallen souls to Valhalla, relying on Odin to give them meat rather than hunting for themselves.
Spying is only one part of a successful campaign: once you have the tactical information, you’ve got to make use of it. We’ve heard little if anything of what Summer and Tai were doing for Oz, but it’s pretty reasonable to guess that once Qrow and Raven gathered important intel, it was Summer and Tai who were dispatched to handle the situation.
Even if Summer and Tai weren’t actually given wolf shapeshifting magic, their teamwork with Raven and Qrow could easily still fit the roles of Odin’s birds and wolves.
It tracks with the real-life behavior of ravens and wolves as well:
What Do You Know About Summer Rose, Raven Branwen
Tell Us
She Has The Other Half Of Your Bracers, Raven
In addition, it has also been pointed out that Geri and Freki have more destructive counterparts: Hati and Sköll (”one who hates” and “one who mocks”), who in some versions of Norse mythology chase the moon and sun through the sky so they can eat them during Ragnarok, ending the world. (Some sources have them as the wolf Fenrir’s children, but as far as I can tell it’s not a definite thing.)
And who do we know around here who are directly symbolized by the moon and sun?
Speaking of which...
Ruby’s In On It, Too
To round all this off, according to RTX 2013′s RWBY art panel, Ruby was originally designed to be “kinda wolfy,” with gray hair that flipped up like ears/hackles to look "wild and wolf-like.”
It’s Beowolves that she’s shown fighting in the Red Trailer, and she has Beowolf models overlooking her bed:
And, more recently: what did she dress up as for Halloween (her birthday!) in the official merch?
The question is, what purpose does this imagery serve? Because Ruby’s wolfishness hasn’t been brought up directly in the show, much unlike other characters’ more blatant imagery. If this theory is correct, it’s to connect her to her Big Bad Wolf mom.
Ruby shares a certain other category of imagery with her mother as well...
Moon Symbolism
This is the more obvious symbolism associated with Summer and Ruby, just like Tai and Yang are associated with the sun. Right from the Red Trailer, the two of them have always been associated with the moon, especially the full moon.
The moon is also notably brought up in several song lyrics in ways that could be very relevant as well — “The moon will sadly watch the roses die,” “Rising like the moon,” “Our path was clear / The moon watched safely from above", "Enemies arise and the hate is flowing / Shattering the moon and bloodying the sky,” “When there's no more light / and the moon should crumble” — but I’m not good enough at analyzing songs to go too in depth on that point.
Now, remember the pool of Destruction that Salem jumped into that turned her Grimm in the first place? What was reflected in it again?
[Eggman voice] THE MOOOOOOOOON
I might note here that my character tag for Summer isn’t “dead Moon Mom,” it’s “Dead Moon mom”: we can still swing it so that one of her character allusions is the Dead Moon (or Buried Moon, as it’s called in some versions) of English folklore.
How it goes is basically: the Moon protects travelers through England’s bogs with her light, but when she hears that without it, the people are attacked by evil creatures of the night, she descends to Earth to try and solve the problem, clad in a black hooded cloak. In saving a lost traveler, her light attracts the creatures, who bury her alive in the bog.
The traveler eventually leads the worried people back to the bog to save the Moon, but Summer’s journey to save humanity from the Creatures of Grimm with the light of her Silver Eyes doesn’t go quite as well. She’s still buried in the bog, trapped in the body of a Grimm hybrid.
To sum it all up, combine a wolf with the full moon and what do you get?
WEREWOLF, MOTHERFUCK
So where is Summer now?
In the one place we haven’t gotten a proper look at yet.
“Reinforce our numbers at Beacon. The Relic is there.”
It didn’t seem to me like Salem was talking to a Grimm there. Like with Leo in volume 5, somebody is on the other side of that conversation. Summer just isn’t too inclined to answer verbally: she loathes her master, but has no choice but to stay under her control.
It’s also been pointed out that Team STRQ is the Team RWBY that failed and broke down; specifically, Summer is the Ruby that lost hope and gave up, that was utterly shattered and didn’t go to the therapy dimension about it.
The Hound(s) are an experiment, by Salem’s own description: a weapon not quite as mindless as the average Grimm but not as resentful as Summer. As a wolf, Summer is a step above them, the perfected version that Salem has been trying to recreate ever since accidentally acquiring her.
Summer’s last ditch effort to save the world was so thoroughly crushed, every possible solution she thought to helping the ones she loves most completely lost. With those gone, the only thing she has left to offer her family and the world is the mercy of a quick death. So that’s what she’s going to give them; and to that end, here she is at the end of Salem’s leash, still fighting to end suffering in the only way she believes she can anymore.
She’s not going to be happy at all to find out that her daughters became Huntresses to follow in her footsteps (”but, baby, please don’t do what I did” / “I don’t want you to waste your life in vain” and all that), and Ruby and Yang are going to be even less happy to find out that not only is their mom alive but is now evil and wants to kill them before Salem can do worse to them.
Absolutely nobody is happy at that family reunion except Salem, who’s watching the continued befuckening of her favorite lapdog’s life with wine and popcorn.
How are they going to beat her?
Don’t let that header fool you, I have no actual conclusion to this post. My only solid idea re: how the actual Rose-Xiao Long-Branwen family fight might actually go is that Summer can’t be one-shotted by Ruby’s Silver Eyes like any other Grimm. She can be temporarily hurt by them, but being a Silver-Eyed Warrior herself, they can’t permanently damage, freeze, or kill her.
Cinder, rage quitting: OH COME ON THAT’S NOT FUCKING FAIR

Shoya's story of making friends, trying to bring people together and all that, and the thoughts going on in his head- it kinda reminds me of Beauty and the Beast, the Disney version. There's that one scene where Beast hasn't eaten like a human in so long that he's forgotten how, and Belle has to teach him.
Shoya's kinda like that. He had friends before he became a bully, but that was so long ago that he's forgotten what it's like. Compounded with the fact that Sho's entire perspective of life and friendship has completely changed. There's a short, chubby dude that's so clingy it's almost creepy, but he's the one that taught Sho what friendship is supposed to be. There's all of Shouko's friends that he's trying to reconnect her with. There's Shouko's foul-mouthed little sister Yuzuru that tried to pass herself off as Shouko's bf to keep Shouko's bully away, and tweeted an embarrassing pic of Shoya that got him suspended from school for a week. And there's Shouko, herself.
And these are all Shoya's friends. Friends that he never thought he'd have before. All very different people. And he's not sure why they make him happy, but they do.
(I'm about halfway thru the movie, btw. The amusement park scene. I just wanted to say this because it made me kinda happy.)

Rules: post seven snippets and tag seven people.
Once again, all these are from Alexis Dalliance vs the Evil of Titan, in my unending quest to edit the damn thing.
One
The other elf… Now he was a conundrum. He stood, ramrod straight, directly in front of the Captain's desk. He'd yet to change into any issued armour, and still wore what amounted to peasant rags – a tatty, oversized, undyed shirt and brown woolen trousers darned to an inch of their life, the whole ensemble held together with rope suspenders. Alexis squinted, sniffing suspiciously. Yes, there was also a faint miasma of animal dung from his direction. An elven farmer was a distinctly unusual thing. One to keep an eye on, that was for sure…
Two
On her way to the mess hall Alexis ran into Ithanor and Richard. It was Ithanor who heard her yelling to wait, where Richard would have sleep-walked on. Richard's limbs drooped, reminding her of a weeping willow, but Ithanor was as bright and alert as a holly tree in Autumn. As they made their way to the mess hall, Alexis told them about Captain Hengar. "I don't think he's fit for duty," she said. "But the townsfolk need organising to start work on repairs. I think I can convince him to eat and sleep. Richard, after last night you'll have their respect. You should coordinate the people." "Me!" Richard stopped coming alert as if he'd been slapped. "But… I don't know how. I wouldn't know what to do or what to say or-" "I'll do it," Ithanor said, holding up a hand to slow Richard's panic. "It's fine. They saw the three of us together, so if they respect and trust Richard, it should carry over. We'll get you to do a little speech and then I can take over giving the orders." "Good plan. If you see Yazty, send him my way?" Ithanor nodded. "Right then lads, let's get it done."
Three
Between the three of them, they managed to wrangle Hengar into bed, get the townspeople motivated, and begin work on the town’s reconstruction. Soon the air was filled with the sounds of workmen calling, rubble being shifted and sawing as seasoned timbers were brought out of storage. Once Hengar was deeply asleep, thanks to some concoction from Yaztromo, Alexis took any spare hands from the militia buildings to help with the town's efforts. Of Victor and Bastet there was no sign. But it didn't matter; Alexis knew that now Zagor was dead, they had some loose ends of their own to tie off.
Four
Following the Quartermaster's directions brought Alexis to a long room, filled end-to-end with bunk beds. A human with black hair and lieutenant's stripes held a slate, marking off filled bunks as he directed the recruits to their new sleeping places. Alexis froze in the doorway – there were so many people, so many sounds, so many smells. Talking and laughing, the tang of metal polish and reek of bodies. "Next! You there, don't dawdle." Alexis looked up at the lieutenant, eyes wide. "Not seen anything of the like before, eh?" he asked. Alexis nodded. "You'll get used to it, lass. Sixth on the right, against the wall." He squinted down at her. "Lower bunk." "Yessir," Alexis squeaked, and made her way to the assigned bunk.
Five
A half-elf followed shortly after, arriving as Alexis was trying to figure out which chest was hers. "You're my bunkmate, huh?" he asked. "Yeah. Alexis Dalliance." She held out a hand. He shook. "Holger Brodanic. I think that one is your chest," he added, pointing at the one against the wall. "Ta." "So how come they let a kid in? You lie about your age?" Brodanic asked as he put his own equipment away. "I'm not a child, I'm a full-grown adult." "You're awful short. You got some kinda sickness?" Alexis balled her hands, then released them slowly. "No. I'm an eshen. I'm actually tall for my kind." "Huh." Brodanic perched on the edge of the lower bunk with a lopsided smile. "My mother used to tell me stories about your lot. Mostly that if I didn't stay close to the village, an eshen would turn me into a tree." Alexis gave a puckish smile and wiggled her fingers. "Who's to say I won't?" For a split second Brodanic's face dropped, then he gave a tittering laugh. Alexis winked. "Nah, that's not something we can do." Brodanic stood, chucking her on the shoulder before bouncing up to his own bunk. "We're gonna make great bunkmates, Dalliance."
Six
Alexis smirked as she finished putting away her gear. Her ears twitched, making her stop and listen. Through the general hubbub of the barracks came the sound of angry, raised voices. Ensuring she could remember which bed was hers, she left, following the sounds of conflict back outside. In front of the the awning where the human had been taking in the recruits, an elf and the half-orc officer argued. The human – she’d overheard some of the other militia say he was the Captain of this outfit, a man called Hengar – sat back in the chair watching the kerfuffle. Also joining in on the argument was another human, tall and broad, and another elf. Abruptly the Captain stood up. "Enough." He laid his hands flat on the table. "I won’t have dissent in the ranks before we’ve even gotten anywhere. Vrog, take over. You three come with me." With that he left the half-orc standing there, striding towards the entrance. Alexis tried to back away, not wanting to be in trouble already, but she wasn’t fast enough. "You there," Hengar pointed at her as he approached. "How much of that did you hear?" "Nothing, sir. You stopped as I arrived." Hengar grunted. "Where were you before?" "In the barracks, sir." An eyebrow raised. "Good ears on you, eh? You too then, come along." Alexis gulped, but dutifulled trailed along after the group, as Hengar lead the way to his office.
Seven
The end of the sewer pipe lead into a small alcove filled with long brushes and leather gauntlets and aprons. Quietly, they used these tools to remove the effluent from their legs. "I should scout ahead," Alexis said. "No offense but I’m less likely to make a lot of noise while doing so, and I suspect my senses are more keen than yours." Ithanor glanced at their companions. No one disagreed. "Very well," he said. "We shall await your return. If you run into difficulties, holler, and we will come." Alexis nodded, her mouth set in a grim line. In a moment she was gone.

Kazui Kurosaki in my BLEACH AU. At 45 years old, the Soul Society saw use in Kazui Kurosaki's power. The man was sentenced to be locked away, kept in a state of suspended aging so that his immense power may be used when necessary.
Kikuo entered the cell one day, expressing interest in using Kazui's Hell powers. He took him outside and had him activate a gateway to Hell. Kazui asked when Kikuo would take him back, to which Kikuo replied "Never! You're a free man. Tell them the Kuchiki family endorsed your release. I guess it isn't too incorrect, considering they practically own me... But I know Sho-jo and Yoshi. They won't contest this." Kikuo leapt into Hell to find his father, and Kazui stood there in disbelief. It's been 400+ years, and he's being let go again. Once Kikuo comes back and he closes the gate, Kazui decides his first step is to reconnect with his family. Kikuo watches him leave before returning to his base with Jushiro Kotetsu and Kaien Abarai.

NJPW 52nd Anniversary preview
Tetsuya Naito vs. SHO - Naito is the IWGP world heavyweight champion, and Sho is the IWGP junior heavyweight champion. Neither title is at stake in this match--it's just a tradition to have the top heavyweight face the top junior on the anniversary show.
Naito's next title defense will be in Tokyo on April 6 in Tokyo, against the winner of the New Japan Cup tournament. Whether he keeps the title or not, his next scheduled match will be April 12--in a real city, Chicago, Illinois--against Jon Moxley. I'm excited.
I think everybody was expecting El Desperado to bring the junior title to this match. Instead Sho defeated him on February 23, when Ren Narita crawled out from under the ring to hold Despy down until he was counted out. I'm actually okay with the idea that titles can change hands via count-out, but obviously the point of such a rule should be "the champion can't run away" not "we can do more flavors of fuck finishes." I know it's supposed to put heat on Sho, but it just cheapens the title win, the title itself, and this match.
Look, I appreciate that House of Torture's shenanigans are aimed at the Japanese ticketholders. If they boo and chant "go home" at the heels, that's enough to call it a success, apparently. New Japan really doesn't care if I, an American streaming these shows overseas, am bored with this crap. I'm not their priority, that's their prerogative.
But I can't believe anybody, in Japan or elsewhere, wants to pay to see Naito pretend to be in danger of taking the biggest bullshit upset loss of his career. We know Naito will win, we know none of the run-ins are going to lead to the finish, we know if they tease a count-out Naito will get back in the ring at nineteen. I could deal with all that if it was entertaining, like when Toru Yano does it. But Sho's actively trying not to be entertaining.
This is going to suck. Listening to Chris Charlton act like he's "pulling back the curtain" to explain why it sucks, for the whole match, will make it even worse.
I think I've talked myself into skipping this. Anyway, Naito has to win. Stay healthy for Mox, champ.
Shota Umino vs. Jack Perry - This is a part of the first round in the New Japan Cup tournament. Perry debuted with New Japan on January 13, when he appeared in the crowd disguised as a fan and attacked Umino out of nowhere.
This is Perry's first match since he lost the FTW belt to HOOK in Wembley Stadium. About five minutes after that, he had a backstage face-off with CM Punk, which led to Punk being fired and Perry being suspended. I guess they weren't sure how to bring Perry back without making it about Punk, so he's doing this New Japan run where he can talk about being a "scapegoat" without getting into who is assigning blame to him, or for what, or why it's not really his fault.
I figured they'd set up a singles match for this feud, but I didn't expect it to be in the opening round of this tournament. I'm curious to see if Perry is just flying in for a one-and-done, or if he'll stick around for the whole tour. I don't see him booked for any undercard tag matches, which suggests he'll just lose here and head home. But I suppose there's a chance he'll stick around.
If Jack wins, I'd say he's the favorite to reach the quarterfinals, probably in a Forbidden Door rematch against SANADA. That could be pretty damn interesting...but we're getting ahead of ourselves here. It's just too early to try to guess where things are going with Perry's scapegoat gimmick. He needs a win, but I'm not confident he's going to get one tonight.
KENTA vs. YOSHI-HASHI - Another first-round match in the New Japan Cup. The winner of this match will face Sanada on March 11 in the second round, since (as a former New Japan Cup winner) he qualified for a first-round bye. Kenta is 4-0 in singles matches against Yoshi.
Yoshi's career highlight is being a 3-time IWGP heavyweight tag champion, but he and Hirooki Goto lost that title in January. Kenta and Chase Owens are the current tag champs. So this is really less about who advances in the tournament (neither of them are going to get far) and whether Yoshi can pin Kenta to get back into contention for the tag title. If Kenta wins, though, I'd say that puts Yoshi and Goto in the back of the line...which could be interesting, because there aren't a ton of other teams to put ahead of them.
I get the feeling Kenta will win to make sure Sanada has an expendable heel to beat in the second round. But it's not a lock--I'd go maybe 60/40 Kenta wins here.
Toru Yano vs. Yujiro Takahashi - Yet another New Japan Cup match. The winner here will meet the winner of Umino vs. Perry in the second round, on March 11.
When it's one-on-one, Yano is 6-1 against Yuj. But I'm guessing most of those matches were before Yujiro went super-duper mega-cheap heel with the House of Torture. Yano will have his hands full trying to stay ahead of all the House of Torture guys running in, I'm pulling for Yano, but he's definitely beatable here.
SANADA & Taichi & Yuya Uemura & DOUKI vs. EVIL & Ren Narita & Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Dick Togo - This is basically a preview of Taichi vs. Narita on March 10. Sanada, Evil, and Uemura are also in the New Japan Cup. We already saw Just 5 Guys and House of Torture feud back in the fall, and I'm over it. The only new wrinkle here is that I think this is the first time we'll see Uemura since he had to cut his hair after losing to Yota Tsuji a couple of weeks ago. Kanemaru or Togo should probably lose the fall, so maybe Uemura can get back on the winning track.
David Finlay & Gabe Kidd & Gedo vs. TJP & Francesco Akira & Callum Newman - Finlay vs. TJP is scheduled for March 7; Kidd vs. Newman is set for March 8. Finlay's War Dogs pretty much destroyed the United Empire in the big cage match last month, and now they're just facing the three weakest guys in the United Empire. I think TJP is angling to be a bigger wheel in the faction now that Will Ospreay's gone, but I don't really think that's going to work. Finlay's team is gonna murder these poor guys.
Shingo Takagi & Hiromu Takahashi & Yota Tsuji & BUSHI vs. Tomohiro Ishii & Hirooki Goto & El Desperado & Boltin Oleg - The heavyweights in this match--Shingo, Tsuji, Ishii, Goto, and Oleg--are all in the New Japan Cup, but this match doesn't really preview their first-round bouts. We could get Goto vs. Ishii on March 12, but only if Ishii beats Chase Owens on March 7. Oleg is still a Young Lion, so you know he has to lose the fall.
Hikuleo & El Phantasmo vs. Mikey Nicholls & Zack Sabre Jr. - ELP and Hiku are the STRONG tag team champions, but the title isn't at stake here. This match is mainly about previewing Phantasmo vs. Nicholls on March 10. Hikuleo and Sabre are also in the tournament, but in different parts of the bracket. Feels like the best move here is for Nicholls to get a pin to set up a STRONG title shot for him and his regular tag partner, Shane Haste. Actually, I'm kinda surprised Haste isn't on this show.
Jeff Cobb & Great-O-Khan vs. Tanga Loa & Tomoaki Honma - Khan vs. Loa will be on March 7. Cobb is also in the tournament. Honma didn't make the cut, which kind of tells you who's losing the fall in this match.

After the Liberation
Muzhits,
I trust the lapse in our discourse requires no explanation or forgiveness, old friend; we are but recently able to send letters beyond the city once more, after the insurrection that struck my district. I understand Mirsvr has not gone without similar agitation and suffering. I regret this sincerely for your fine city, and I rejoice that the greater terror that held Lansk is yet a stranger to you. I hope to hear gladder news of your affairs than the sad tale I give you today. I won't inflict upon you further accounts of the agitators' occupation; I cannot tell you anything that has not been printed in broadsheets, though I counsel you to doubt the more lurid stories. Since the district's liberation however, our business has not returned to its previous condition.
I was in the unenviable position of providing a necessary product to the citizens of the district, and so I was forced to deal with the Executive and the self-appointed tyrants of the Supply Committe. I had no wish to support or validate their actions, but had less wish for the innocent population to starve! Thus, with no small distaste, I continued to produce bread with grain supplied by the Executive, to be distributed by the Executive, even at times relying on workers assigned by the Executive. Collaboration it was not, Muzhits, as it was performed under duress and only out of necessity.
Regardless, when the bailiffs and the Companies took back the District, I could easily have been accused of treachery, were it not for my bakery being shut down for lack of material. A scarce two days prior, I had a cart of grains stolen from my yard, the very last in the city that I could secure. I could not prove the author of this outrage, though I know it to have been on behalf of Pivan. That scoundrel has not been seen since the night of the battle, when his brewery was destroyed. The loss of that brew is a sore blow to Lansk; the man shall not be mourned so deeply. Nevertheless, this theft proved fortunate, as I had to suspend operation and thus the Company had no basis to accuse me of collaboration with agitators on that first day, a day of brutal reprisal.
I said, however, circumstances have not improved. Supply is still disrupted, as despite the collapse of the barricades, the Erthani no longer trade here and the Companies are struggling to deliver supplies sufficient to our needs. Many of my workers have fled or been arrested – good dependable men and women, who I never suspected of agitation in years of employment, are nowhere to be found. Those who remain are often without homes, or grievously injured, or seeking better employment than the wages I can promise on such meager trade. A new Temari agent has been deployed to distribute capital in aid of reconstruction, but I like her not. It's said she was a Licence-Prospector, and a brute. Whether this is true I cannot confirm, but despite abundant rumours of her rough conduct, she has taken on many clients and partners among my fellow business owners. I hope I will not need to resort to her aid.
You no doubt heard of the slaying of Chief Bailiff te Eintov, your fellow son of Mirsvr. I never thought to ask, did you know him? I can only hope the new appointee Akhirin Sarta will not repeat te Eintov's mistakes. The zeal he has shown in the first days of his office exceeds what is required – raids of businesses and homes are commonplace, carried out upon the least suspicion, and far more brutal than is wise. Though I have not been subjected to Sarta's attentions yet I fear that any day he may come, he and his bailiffs backed by Temari marines.
As you see, Muzhits, my siutation is dire, perhaps as dire as ever it was beneath the agitators. I know not of your situation, owing to our isolation from business matters, but I ask you – any spare capital you may have to lend me, or other assistance you could render, would be a great boon to an old friend in need. A stake in my business is forthcoming, should this be favourable, and my gratitude will be a surer bond still. I await your reply, and hope to hear of your continued success and prosperity.
Your friend,
Khlen Khalev

Failure to raise the debt limit would be an entirely different kind of crisis.
Unable to continue borrowing, the federal government would have to rely only on incoming revenue to pay its bills — and there isn’t nearly enough money on most days. That means Social Security payments most likely would get delayed, a day or two at first and then longer if the standoff drags on.
The problem would be repeated with other government payments, sending a cascade of delays rippling across the economy.
“You’re dealing with the potential for an order of magnitude of greater economic consequences that are felt throughout the country,” Shai Akabas, director of economic policy at the centrist Bipartisan Policy Center think tank, said of the difference between a debt limit crisis and a shutdown.
Unlike with a government shutdown, the damage from a first-ever debt limit breach — which could happen as soon as June 1 — could be more severe and long lasting, experts said.
Just getting dangerously close to one in 2011 led Standard & Poor’s to downgrade the US government’s top-level AAA credit rating for the first time, causing higher government borrowing costs. Coming close again, or even failing outright to pay some government bills, could lead to downgrades from the other two credit ratings companies, Fitch Ratings and Moody’s Investor Services, that could sharply raise US government borrowing costs for years.
“A shutdown is an economic problem, but it’s not an existential problem,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, an economics research and consulting firm that is separate from the credit rating company. “A debt limit breach is existential.”
There have been 20 government shutdowns since 1977 in which some or all Congressional appropriations expired. Most shutdowns have lasted just a few days and caused little economic damage. But longer ones, such as the 35-day partial shutdown from late 2018 to early 2019, had more serious consequences.
The Congressional Budget Office estimated the 2018-19 partial shutdown (some appropriation bills had already been approved) led to 300,000 government workers being furloughed and reduced the nation’s economic output by about $11 billion. Much of that output was made up after the government reopened, but about $3 billion of it was permanently lost, the CBO said.
Still, that wasn’t nearly enough to push the economy into a recession.
A debt limit breach that lasts for even just a few days would be much different because it would shake business and consumer confidence and rattle financial markets, Zandi said.
“We’re right on the precipice of a recession anyway,” he said. “This is going to throw us over the ledge.”
Moody’s Analytics estimated in March that a standoff that lasts a few weeks would cause economic damage similar to what occurred during the 2008 global financial crisis, including the loss of more than 7 million jobs, a nearly 20 percent decline in stock prices and mortgage rates and other borrowing costs spiking.
A report released Wednesday by the White House Council of Economic Advisors was similarly bleak, warning that “a protracted default would likely lead to severe damage to the economy, with job growth swinging from its current pace of robust gains to losses numbering in the millions.”
House Republicans say they want to avoid that economic damage and the solution is legislation they approved on April 26. The bill, which Senate Democratic leaders declared dead on arrival, would increase the nation’s $31.4 trillion debt limit by $1.5 trillion or suspend it until March 31 (whichever comes first) in exchange for reducing the deficit by about $4.8 trillion over the next decade.
President Biden and most Democrats argue those cuts are too severe and they shouldn’t be paired with an increase in the debt limit, which is required to pay for funding Congress already has authorized. Biden has invited congressional leaders of both partiesto the White House Tuesday, but the sides are nowhere close to a deal.
The nation technically hit the debt ceiling in January, but the Treasury Department has been conducting what it calls “extraordinary measures” that allow the government to stay within the limit while still paying all the nation’s bills on time. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned congressional leaders last week that the latest estimate based on incoming revenue after April’s annual tax filings show the federal government might not be able to pay all its bills as soon as June 1.
Republicans have argued the Treasury could use incoming money to prioritize payments to government bondholders to avoid defaulting on US debt. And some lawmakers have proposed requiring Treasury also prioritize Social Security and Medicare payments, as well as military pay and veterans programs.
Treasury officials have rejected prioritizing payments, as well as other, less conventional ideas to avoid a default, such as minting a $1 trillion coin. Yellen told lawmakers that Treasury’s system — which made more than 1.4 billion payments in 2022 — is designed to pay all bills on time and that failure to pay any of them still would constitute a default.
A Treasury Inspector General’s report after the 2011 debt limit standoff said officials determined “the least harmful option” in the case of a breach was to suspend payments for a given day until there was enough money to pay them all. In such a scenario, delays “would have quickly worsened each day the debt limit remained at its limit,” the report said.
Treasury and Federal Reserve officials also developed a plan in 2011 to prioritize payment of principal and interest on US debt, according to Fed meeting transcripts released five years later. That is possible because debt payments are made using a separate Fed system. But it’s unclear if that prioritization plan would have worked, said William English, a professor at the Yale School of Management who was a Fed staffer at the time.
“The amount of manual intervention into various very complicated payment systems to make that happen is huge,” said English, who attended the 2011 Fed meeting where the plan was discussed. “And so you can decide to do that and still not successfully do that.”
And even if such a plan were feasible, it might not be enough to avoid a downgrade of the US credit rating.
“Prioritising debt payments to avoid an immediate default, if this were possible, might not be consistent with a ‘AAA’ rating,” London-based Fitch Ratings warned in a statement last month.
All this highlights the tremendous stakes, and unpredictability, of a debt limit breach.
“It’s really hard to foresee a world where the United States is not paying all of its bills because the whole economic system is based on the fact that we do,” said Akbas, an expert on the debt limit. “And once the card at the bottom of that tower is taken out, we don’t know where everything lands.”

Understanding Special Hardship Orders (SHO): A Lifeline for Suspended Drivers
For many people, driving is not just a convenience; it’s a necessity. Whether it's getting to work, attending to family responsibilities, or meeting personal needs, losing your driving privileges can be incredibly disruptive. In cases where a driver’s license is suspended due to certain infractions, a Special Hardship Order (SHO) may provide a vital solution.
But what exactly is a Special Hardship Order, and who qualifies for it? Let’s dive into the details.
What is a Special Hardship Order?
A Special Hardship Order (SHO) is a court-issued document that allows a driver with a suspended or disqualified license to continue driving under strict conditions. This provision typically applies to individuals whose license has been suspended for specific offenses, like exceeding the demerit point limit or committing a high-range speeding offense.
The SHO is designed to mitigate the impact of the suspension, especially when it can lead to undue hardship, such as loss of employment or the inability to fulfill essential family or community obligations.
When Can You Apply for a Special Hardship Order?
You may be eligible to apply for an SHO if:
Your license was suspended due to accumulating too many demerit points.
Your license was suspended for a high-range speeding offense (usually more than 40 km/h over the speed limit).
However, an SHO is not available for all offenses. For instance, if your license has been suspended due to drink-driving, drug-related driving offenses, or dangerous driving, you are not eligible to apply for an SHO.
Eligibility Requirements
To be granted an SHO, you must meet certain conditions:
Necessity: You need to demonstrate that being unable to drive would cause you or your family severe hardship. For instance, if you require your vehicle for work and losing your job would result in financial difficulty, this would qualify as hardship. Alternatively, you may need to show that not being able to drive would prevent you from fulfilling essential personal or family responsibilities.
Good Character: You must convince the court that you are a responsible driver who will comply with the conditions of the SHO and that granting the order won’t pose a risk to public safety.
How to Apply for a Special Hardship Order
Applying for an SHO requires the following steps:
Obtain the Necessary Forms: You can get the application form from your local traffic court or sometimes online, depending on your jurisdiction.
Prepare Evidence: Supporting documents are crucial. This may include proof of employment, affidavits from your employer, financial statements showing the hardship that losing your job would cause, or medical evidence showing that you need to drive to care for someone.
Submit the Application: File the application with the appropriate court. You will usually need to pay a filing fee.
Attend the Court Hearing: The court will set a date for your hearing. During this hearing, you will need to present your case to the judge or magistrate, explaining why you should be granted a Special Hardship Order. The court will consider factors like your driving record, the nature of your offense, and the potential impact of the suspension.
Conditions of a Special Hardship Order
If granted, an SHO will allow you to drive under certain strict conditions, which might include:
Driving only for specific purposes (e.g., commuting to and from work or medical appointments).
Driving only at specific times of the day.
A zero-tolerance policy for any traffic violations or offenses during the period the SHO is in effect.
Failing to adhere to these conditions could result in the SHO being revoked and your license remaining suspended for a longer period.

200 Films of 1952
Film number 197: The Member of the Wedding
Release date: December 25th, 1952
Studio: Columbia
Genre: drama
Director: Fred Zinnemann
Producer: Stanley Kramer
Actors: Ethel Waters, Julie Harris, Brandon De Wilde
Plot Summary: (Based on the play by Carson McCullers.) Twelve-year-old Frankie is a sensitive and wildly emotional girl who feels left out and alone. When her older brother Jarvis arrives home with his pretty fiancée Janice, Frankie irrationally falls in love with them and the idea of their marriage. Her housekeeper/mother figure Berenice tries to gently talk sense into her, while her 6-year-old neighbor John Henry just wants to be her friend.
My Rating (out of five stars): ****¼
Films based directly on plays in 1952 are emphatically different than typical screenplay-based ones! Like Come Back, Little Sheba (film number 85), this was very dark, stark, and realistic. Both deal with subtler and more mature themes, and happy endings are eschewed for something painfully ambiguous. Each film has the hallmarks of theatrical adaptations: Dialogue and acting are front and center. They take place in only one or two settings, limiting the cinematography. The scenes tend to be much much longer, and the score is sparser. They are definitely not films the average Joe would like. (minor spoilers)
The Good:
Ethel Waters. She was the highlight. Her acting was incredibly moving, and her character felt like the actual protagonist of the film, not Frankie. She played Berenice as a fully realized motherly character- there was none of that demeaning and racist “I sho’ does love servin’ white folks!” vibe. She felt like a real woman in her own right, with her own complex life.
Julie Harris. She played Frankie in the stage version, and although her performance is divisive today, for the most part I liked it. Yes, she threw loud obnoxious tantrums, but Frankie was clearly a highly highly sensitive girl experiencing the emotional hurricane of puberty. She acted externally the way I did internally at that age, so I could very much relate! Her “overacting” mostly worked for me because of that.
Brandon deWilde. He played a really cute oddball well. His lackadaisical attitude, desire to hang out with a 12-year-old girl, and ease at which he tried on women’s clothing made me smile.
The writing was good- it was smart, nothing was overly explained, and it was a pretty masterful character study of both Frankie and Berenice.
I liked that the cast for the film was the same cast used in the acclaimed Broadway run. Most movies change some of the cast to add Hollywood star power. (Think Lancaster in Come Back, Little Sheba or Hepburn in My Fair Lady.) Ethel Waters was definitely famous, but she wasn’t a big movie star per se. Harris and deWilde both made their film debuts in this.
I appreciated the unusual “plot” and theme. This isn’t really a coming-of-age film, although it’s advertised as such. Frankie goes from one obsession to another, essentially, and neither of them are about her blooming into adulthood. It’s really about characters, not about “growing up.”
Damn, you could feel the Southern summer heat in this! Every character was sweating buckets, and the camera lingered on it. These were the days before air conditioning was widespread, and boy do you empathize!
There was no easy happy ending- things were left quite sad and ambiguous.
Ethel Waters got top billing, which was almost unheard of for a black actress in Hollywood then.
The Bad:
Although Harris’ work was lauded in this, she does not look 12 by any measure. She was 26 or 27 when this was filmed, although she doesn’t look that old either. She could believably pass for 16-18 maybe, but 12 is really pushing it. There were times I could suspend my disbelief a little, but there’s no denying it detracted from the realism. I doubt any 12 year old actress could play a role this demanding, though.
Some things with Ethel Waters’ character Berenice were cut from the film version, which was a shame. She was the strongest part of the film for me, her acting unmatched.
Like most theatrical adaptations it got too “talky” at times for a movie. “Show don’t tell” was not the motto here.
It also felt “stagey”- you would never doubt this was originally a play. Because of this, sometimes scenes ran on too long.
We have yet another misleading movie poster that dishonestly exaggerates non-existent salacious content! “A girl becomes a woman in the middle of a kiss” is the yuckiest kind of false advertising! It has nothing to do with this film!
