My track record with critically panned games has me thinking my initial desire to play Redfall actually would have been an enjoyable experience for me
#it’s a shlooter full of vampires!! and it’s set in Massachusetts!!#if I can thrive and enjoy the hell of BL3 New Tales from the Borderlands Forspokem etc then I could have loved that game too#maybe it’ll come to ps5 someday 🎻

It's really satisfying the brain goblins that have been craving shlooters since I stopped playing Darktide a few months back. Really loving all the different gun types and the ways exotics interact.
Anyway because Darktide broke my heart I've been playing a lot of Destiny 2 over the past week. I even bought some of the expacs. Which is like being disappointment by heroin and deciding to do crack.

So. Anthem.
I played the closed alpha in december (not january.... in fact...) and like... my impression of the game was overall meh. the story failed to hook me--the opening was in fact fairly disappointing having seen those characters in the trailers and then being like “just kidding” plus, while I don’t inherently mind long cutscenes, the opening felt so full of just... kind of bland, unimpactful cutscenes with no interactivity except to occasionally shoot something i was just like “ugh”
i thought the game was fairly pretty, with some fun fauna and flora, and the movement feels good.... the facial animations were indeed the best of any bioware game i’ve ever seen...
but i didn’t really like the combat all that much, not just because i was playing alone but it just didn’t.... feel great imo? and it was kinda boring.
there is a lot of great architecture and the distant vistas are pretty sick... reminded me sometimes of des2ny, sometimes of the bazaar in warframe, obvious influence from islamic architecture...
overall I like the javelin designs tho i think pat from polygon’s video despite its comedic presentation actually had some fantastic points about silhouette variation wrt their designs... ofc i only used one in the alpha.
i liked the flying! that’s about it. i liked walking around fort tarsis... but like a lot of the actual gameplay just didn’t draw me and I ended up quitting after only 30-40 minutes because it really felt like I had seen all this game had to offer me (granted, again: in alpha) and was not particularly interested in continuing. I was basically just like, “well. that’s enough for me” and decided I probably wasn’t gonna buy the final product
(not that i have 60 dollars at any given time and when i do it goes straight to student loans lol)
but all that like... doesn’t matter really
when you look at how EA and Bioware treat their employees (shittily) (not news, we had inklings of this when ME:A came out) and how much their pay their CEOS (too much) and so on and so forth and just like....
The game? I didn’t love it. But also these companies need to seriously treating their employees better, we need to have more unions in place in the games industry as a whole (whether it’s dev, journalism, etc) and for the games to be treated less like commodities and customers to be treated less like weird... producers... (don’t get me wrong i think customer feedback is extremely important but there’s a difference between listening to legit customer feedback and like, placing customer satisfaction above the health and well-being of your workforce? lol)
of course Capitalism means that’s unlikely.
but like... it sucks cause i was excited about this game and a lot of the ppl involved in making it seemed to be excited--of course, when would you not want to make something you can be proud of? and it really ended up kind of a drab mess with too many shitty industry “standards” grinding people into dust for the sake of their malfunctioning profit machine.... even if it had turned out good, this keeps happening with big game companies (and i’m sure small ones) and that’s....shitty
#nadia plays stuff#anthem#long post#shlooters are not my fave genre but i think even i can tell that of the shlooters this fell pretty flat#i kinda has my least fave aspects of mmos and shlooters with some pretty decent visual design so it's just eh#and again the industry treatment of employees is a big black mark against bioware and ea's favor i think

your blog's made me realize that like, fallout actually has interesting lore its just rly buried under itself trying to market itself as a fps. i think by bethesda trying to market fallout as such so much, people miss out on all the rich lore and behind-the-scenes of the game
absolutely. fallout 3 is a slapdash assembly of assets that left most of the great things about its source material and design materials behind to tell the worst story in the world and fallout 4 is fallout 3 2. i'm so interested in scraping the margins of 76 for lore because by now the broad strokes of the worldbuilding are all drawn-out handwaves desperately trying to justify the inexcusable pseudo-intellectual shlooter end product.
this betterbemeta post is a great write-up of how bethesda expends a ton of effort on being openly nervous and heading off criticism, so much so that they do more apologizing for their writing than they do writing

The new shooter looter - shlooter, if you will - has a demo out, so let’s scope out the competition! Other demos lined up after Outriders are the Resident Evil 3 remake, Deep Rock Galactic Insider, Book of Adventum, Clan N, and Aniquilation (yes they’re spelled like that).
Shloot with me on Friday (the 16th), 7:45 PM EST at https://www.twitch.tv/catastrophe_jupiter !

I’m only done the first third (?) of this dlc but I’m enjoying myself... mostly. I am enjoying the story, which is so far well written; I am enjoying the bl3 gameplay the same way I enjoy all bl3 gameplay which is to say I veer wildly between having fun and finding this game tedious and finding this game infuriating. Bullet sponge bosses designed for co-op are my personal hell. It’s the first time I’ve touched bl3 since about March, and having so recently played Last of Us, which has gameplay that seems to be designed for me personally and specifically to enjoy, switching back over into the unfamiliar waters of a first person shlooter is rough. Let me shiv a psycho.
I really enjoyed ghost Bl1 crew. I’m glad there was some [talk] dialogue with all of ‘em after because it was all funny. Tannis, upload some anime into Krieg’s brain for your girlfriend.

Best Games of 2009-2010
When I looked at the game releases for 2010, I thought I was going to have to start consolidating entries from here on out. As it turns out 2010 just sucked. So:
Best Games of 2010
1. Heavy Rain
I know David Cage is a boner. I know he fancies himself an auteur, though he wields his creative pen like a meat cleaver, hewing and hacking delicate subjects into heavy handed, club-you-over the head subtlety. The thing is, I find the moment to moment decisions and tense situations to be enthralling, despite myself. I love the way the games force you to make quick choices and live with the outcome of your choices and actions. Dude needs an editor though, I think he has the George Lucas problem.
Yup, that’s it, that’s all of them.
Best Games of 2009
10. Crystal Defenders
I like tower defense games, and this is one. With little Final Fantasy people.
9. Borderlands
The first shlooter? I think that title actually goes to Hellgate London. Anyway Borderlands, despite being not my kind of game, provided some coop fun on the old Xbox 360.
8.Demon’s Souls
My first souls game, and the one I had the deepest run with. I knew there was something to the game, so I worked to see what it is. I understand the appeal to these games, and they will always call to me, but they’re not quite for me.
7. Angry Birds
Even though I got real sick of Angry Birds once it stopped feeling like a game series and started feeling like a brand, those first few Angry Birds games were excellent. They’re simple, intuitive, and challenging. Launching birds into these structures and watching everything topple over and explode is FUN. I wish it had stopped before Transformers, and Star Wars, and a movie.
6. The Beatles Rock Band
Rock Band is a good time, and the Beatles have a great music catalog. This was easily the best of the music games dedicated to a single artist.
5. Brütal Legend
Brutal Legend is an action RPG that leans into the metalhead rock culture and has licensed music and voicework of some icons like Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmeister. Jack Black voices the main character. It’s a perfect fit.
There’s an alternate universe where Brutal Legend is one of my favorite games ever made. In this timeline, however, they shoehorned realtime strategy into a console RPG. There were a couple of years there where games like Pikmin and Overlord were popular. I guess that’s the reason. The rest of the game is so fun and has so much personality DAMMIT.
4. The Sims 3
The original Sims game consumed me in a way that few games have. The subsequent releases have never quite captured my attention the way that first one did. That said, my wife got very much into The Sims 3, and I spent a fair bit of time with it as well. The game has an impressive number expansion backs, most of which add to the game in a substantial (and overwhelming) way. My problem with the Sim 3 is that the more add-ons you installed, the more unstable the game became. My wife had save-ruining bugs more than once.
3. Katamari Forever
The Katamari games are always goofy fun. I can see why Namco Bandai wanted to keep making them, and I can also see why Keita Takahashi didn’t want to keep making them.
2. Flower
Flower is the first - and only - game I directly associate with the Playstation 3. I got it along with a new TV pretty late in the console cycle, and it was gorgeous. The music is as beautiful as the visuals, and the motion controls with the sixaxis controller were utilized in a way I never really experienced again. It’s a game where you control the wind and blow around picking up flower petals, so I get that it’s not for everyone. But it’s for me.
1. Plants vs Zombies
It ain’t sexy but - like Angry Birds above - it’s an excellent game despite its appeal to *gasp* CASUAL GAMERS. Also like Angry Birds, PvZ became a brand™ and probably should have died a long time ago, or least shouldn’t have been bought by EA. Plants vs Zombies 2 was a good game ruined by shitty in-app purchases. Anyway, I’m a tower defense guy, and this is fun take on that genre. Unlocking new plants, adding new enemies, and new types of stages are all ways to keep my interest. And, according to Steam, Plants vs Zombies kept my interest for some 70 hours.

Borderlands 3 is exactly what I want it to be: More of the Same
Borderlands 3 is exactly what I want it to be: More of the Same
A while back, I wrote a piece talking about my concerns for Borderlands 3. It was a story I’d seen unfold so many times before; a follow-up to a highly regarded game that only comes after a long break. To many, the game has been a disappointment, if you listen to the same Podcasts I do anyway. To me though, Borderlands 3 was exactly what I wanted it to be: More Borderlands.

To be fair, Borderlands was always fairly light, story-wise. You've only got one or two big pillars per game, usually:
There's a Vault somewhere. You're a Vault Hunter. Water is also wet.
An Antagonist also has aims for said Vault. Their efforts are causing social and emotional turmoil. You've got a potentially moral stake in this, now.
Memes. Memes and in-jokes and references galore. Who needs a consistent narrative thread when you can have a guy who screams at you and demands that you shoot him in the face for a few hundred XP?
Oh, and there's Progressive narrative points and character designs by the boatload. Seeing as they're characters all their own, they'll take a heck of a lot of space and more or less drown out everything else. Not that it's a bad thing, it simply reframes the main quest as being a teensy bit less important than you'd think.
So it sort of follows that Cyber-Colonial Revisionist Black Guy and Comparatively Milquetoast Dixie Gentleman would eventually warrant their own massive plot points and even overshadow the rest of the game. Quiz the fans, and I doubt anyone seriously cares or even remembers Tyreen's bid for godhood and bad takes on streamer culture. Cheering for a gay couple going Eldritch would probably feel a heck of a lot more constructive than spending fifteen hours or so going "Holy fuck, but aren't tentpole 'Tubers and streamers annoying and cultlike as shit."
Personally, though, I more or less gave up on Borderlands 3 the moment it became obvious the gear plateaus out on Promethea. I thought I was playing a shlooter, but it turns out that unless you've got very precise gear combinations the game isn't too willing to provide, it's basically playing as a sort of first-person Dark Souls. That surprised me, as Pandora's power creep is quite gentle, comparatively.
You know Gearbox really went all in with creating Wainwright and Hammerlock's relationship, down to the parallels in dialogue and opposites attract motif personality and look wise, and I think that they popped off with that and expended too much energy on creating two unkillable gay gods that the rest of the story pales in comparison
