So... Episode 6 finally revealed what Shizuru and Yoka's argument was about... and it tells us way more about Shizuru than it does Yoka. To me at least, Shizuru's whole monologue absolutely reeked of projection. Obviously this is just speculation, but more than somebody who doesn't believe in her friend it felt like she doesn't believe in herself, in her own capacity to achieve difficult or impressive things -- a worldview that is threatened when Yoka reveals that she does have big dreams and plans on actually striving to achieve them. Because if Yoka (someone Shizuru percieves as a peer and not particularly more impressive than herself) is going to try depite all the challenges she would face, doesn't that sort of mean Shizuru is giving up? That her "realism" is in fact just thinly vailed pessimism? Yoka's plans fundamentally challenge her worldview, the idea that someone not particularly impressive from a small town could never be someone important. She tells Yoka that she should aim lower to avoid dissapointments. The way she talks about it really makes it feel like it's something she herself is terrified of, more than concern for Yoka. Maybe this is from past failiures, maybe it's from the surrounding people's attitudes. Throughout the show, we see Shizuru consistently shrug off the idea of planning for the future. In most instances it comes off more lighthearted, like she just hasn't thought about it, or doesn't really care. But looking back now, I think it's ultimately because she doesn't believe a favorable future is possible for her. In the flashbacks, she seems to expect a boring, mundane future. In the present, she doesn't expect one at all, considering everyone from Agano turns into an animal when they reach "adulthood" anyway. This also makes me consider that perhaps the whole animal thing is some kind of metaphor for adulthood, spesifically the way it can feel like stagnation. The people of agano become animals, caring only for base survival needs and living day to day. Animals don't have goals or ambitions, they simply live. This would mirror the future Shizuru seemingly expected, a life spent on supporting yourself without any greater passion or purpose. All of this could be proven wrong next episode, but being able to speculate like this is a rare thing with how few anime original shows there are, and I think it's pretty fun! Either way, I think this'd be an interesting angle for the show to take, and I'm looking forward to future episodes.

Train to the End of the World Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?
Broadcast: Mondays at 21:00 (JST) Genres: Science Fiction, Post apocalypse Themes: Road Trip, Moe
Synopsis A certain town in the suburbs.
This was not an ordinary countryside town that you could find anywhere. The residents were experiencing a strange phenomenon. But even so, Shizuru Chikura held a strong desire. She wanted to see her missing friends again!
Shizuru and her friends venture out into the world outside, taking an abandoned and motionless train, not knowing if they will make it back alive. What awaits them at the last stop of this running doomsday train?
First Impressions MAL didn't list the genres and themes this time so I had to make up my own. The fact that MAL doesn't even know what genre to put this as should give you an idea of how out there this show is like. So apparently those people freaking out about 5G a few years ago weren't too far off, they just got the number wrong. The show starts with a commencement ceremony celebrating the unveiling of 7G, but it ends up causing the apocalypse instead, and not just some EMP or zombie outbreak. Somehow 7G tore at the fabric of reality itself and things get a little trippy from there.
It cuts to years later and we find an overgrown rural village inhabited by talking animals, all having casual and familiar chats about their spouses' new eating habits, when one of them mentions how the people in a nearby town all got turned into trees instead. That little tidbit they shared was honestly enough to keep me interested because it has me wondering what other sorts of things our 4 main characters will run into on their travels. See, the main character wants to find a girl that went missing before the 7G incident, and when a supply caravan comes by the town bringing a recent newspaper she realizes that her friend is still alive and in Ikebukuro. She figures she only has a few years left until she turns into an animal like the rest of the adults so there's nothing she would rather do than go on a dangerous journey to find her friend. Also there's some hints that maybe there's more than platonic feelings there?
Sorry if I've got less to say about this one than the ones I speak negatively about. Honestly just go watch it and see for yourself it looks way more interesting than the heaps of fantasy video game logic anime this season is turning out to be.

Train to the End of the World
終末トレインどくへいく?
(Anime)
Surreal comedy by apogeego
Era: 2020s
Rating: A
Plot: Lagging behind in infrastructure, Japan skipped straight ahead to a 7G cell network, but as that's not how things are supposed to work, the launch party ends in catastrophe, warping reality and collapsing civilisation. What's left are little pockets around stations in the Seibu Ikebukuro line, now separated by long swaths of land, where bizarre things happen, such as the tiny village of Agano, where after turning 21 people become intelligent animals. This is where Shizuru Chikura lives, who one day by chance discovers her best friend is still alive two years after the incident, and decides to go to Ikebukuro along with her remaining classmates to find her.
Length: 12 episodes
Thoughts: Let's just get the "you just watched this because it had trains on the name" allegations out of the way, because yes, it's true (bowing on a lectern with 電車変人 written on it). It's also delightfully bizarre, and structured in a way it can be *anything* at any point. If you want to see zombies (who can only be defeated by hornyness - not by fanservice, but just by saying sexually suggestive things), mangaka with special powers provided by a Dezaki beret or a Gulliver style episode where the girls are attached by Tiny JSDF, or a city that is based on an anime the girls love, only it got kinda real, this is the place. It keeps giving you very weird situations with very weird solutions and for the most part it's a very fun watch. Now, you have this 12 episode story where bizarre things keep happening, and you need something special before wrapping up the story. IS THAT NABESHIN'S MUSIC? AND HE'S CARRYING A STORYBOARD??!? I'm a big proponent of one of these days someone picking up for adaptation one of those isekai LNs with really long titles, and give him full creative control, and his episode shows why, let the man cook. The sequence of the beret fight is maybe the best in the whole show. The ending is not the most interesting part visually (kinda feel the distance fog bridges were a way to save time), but it doesn't sugarcoat how hurt Yoka felt after being mocked and falling out with Shizuru. They do make up in the end, highlighting what's at the core of the story - you should not fear change, even if undoing 7G means everything was sort of hit with a randomiser.
Recommended to: looking for a very surreal show?
Plus:
Has a fun variety of episodes.
One of the best modem examples of what the medium can do
Exceptionally good looking for the most part, managing to convey this is a very *very* weird world.
Sega Saturn sighting!
Minus:
Because it really has fun trying stuff out, you might find some scenarios less entertaining than others
30 stations but 12 episodes. You know where this is going.
