[mealforaking] my take on the Caroline and Shiv's dynamic is that there wasnt just One Thing and that they both had phases and turns, like the ones you described. Like, I think Caroline was sometimes very present while the kids were in their formative years, then sometimes doing whatever she wanted and fucking off somewhere; then I think Shiv was attached to her in her formative years (but liking Logan better when he would give her time, which was obvs very rare) but Caroline being disciplinatory in a negative way since Shiv wasnt ladylike (wanting to do everything her brothers would do and taking her father's side in their arguments), so Caroline end up shunning her since it was personal, even though Shiv was a kid. Then she had a phase of wanting Shiv's approval, Shiv on her side and not getting that, and then it was open fire. I think they took turns rejecting each other and wanting each other. And like the OP said, its possible Caroline had a reverse psychological thingy going on with becoming Shiv's mother, after all, because of all the gendered expectations over what to expect of a mother / what to expect of a daughter. They both ended up frustrating each other.

Like: I think Shiv gives Caroline hell for not being present, while her own father barely was. She giver her hell for sleeping around while knowing Logan probably did the same. Caroline gives Shiv hell for not being "affectionate" while Kendall barely is and feels betrayed Shiv doesnt "share" things with her (things related to boyfriends or periods) when her other sons barely share with her or genuinely mean what they share with her. So they frustrate each other a lot in that regard and further hurt each other. They both wish they were closer while also thinking "how could she expect I be vulnerable with her after how she treated me?" etc.

i hate when people (especially men) say shiv made the choice at the end for her baby. like i hate that. she made the choice for a lot of reasons, like. she was mad at kendall winning and didn't want to just hand him the crown just because he's the man between the two of them when she fought so hard for it for so long. she maybe did it because she saw kendall turn into logan. she did it because she probably genuinely knew he wouldnt be good at it. some of that was rational and some of that was probably irrational and driven by a lot of emotion.

like. chosing between kendall and the man who she put on the throne just so he would betray her in the last second is such a brutal choice, and she chose the two men who betrayed her, because of kendall. like this always comes down to the siblings and she would rather be the CEOs wife and become her own mother than kendall become CEO and pretend to be his father. like. she does not care about tom enough to be hurt by his betrayal, nor does she care which of these choices is better for him

but she sure as fuck didn't do it for her baby. she does not care about that baby. neither does tom, really, but when people in the show say she would be a bad mother that is... kind of true? she doesn't really seem to want to be a mother and does it like a lot of "woman stuff" she does - she didnt care at all about her wedding, she doesn't care for the place her and tom moved into, and she doesn't really care about having a baby and being a mother. like, yeah, of course she's hurt when people say shed be a bad mother, but she probably still isnt all that interested in being a mother? like. there is no way in hell shiv thought about that baby in that board meeting, like she sat down calmly before the meeting and then made a pro and con list about making kendall CEO and then came to the level-headed conclusion that tom would be overall the lesser evil and better option for her baby. that woman? shiv roy? for her baby?

it's just so out of character for her that i can only blame sexism and not understanding the character because how do you look at shioban roy saying 'i dont think youd be good at it' and 'i love you but i cannot stomach you' after having lost so close at the finish line and using all the power she has so that her brother doesn't get a victory he doesnt deserve, even if the alternative is literally the worst 2 people it could be for her personally. just the idea that this was a purely rational choice made by her so that her baby has a better life is so funny to me like hello

kendall beginning the episode by having no control over his family life, flailing around miserably in front of rava’s suv, lobbing empty magnamonious threats and watching his kids drive away from their grandpas funeral, then using said funeral to do his best logan impression almost as if logan possessed him to give his own eulogy, to face his dad’s old guard and make sure they’ll have his back in the ring, picking up their marionettes and seeing if he can pull the strings. kendall, in recent episodes, telling his wife and his brown daughter that he’s sorry he’s the ceo of the racism factory, but he does it all for his family <3 having some doubts about electing a fascist but burying them as soon as he thinks the fascist will give him what he wants, all for said fascist to drop him at the nearest convenience (lol).

AND THEN shiv being the only person (other than jess) who DOESNT want to elect a fascist, being called hysterical over it, and then THE NEXT DAY, lightly joking about an absent mother and putting aside her own political beliefs to make a deal with the fascist so she might be ceo of racism.

i dont know why exactly they decided to do the pregnancy plot but while i have mixed feelings about it i do think it also fits in with the show’s overall theme of…succession. as logan is dead and their mother is essentially obsolete, and the kids now take up the mantle that their parents left them, its only natural that the next question is: who will take the kids place? kendall has children but hes clearly not involved in their lives, and on top of that theyre not ideal candidates to carry on the roy legacy because rava is keeping them away from that life + sophia and iverson are nonwhite/adopted and autistic respectively, meaning they dont fit into the logan’s western white ideal of a strong legacy and successor. roman’s not going to have kids because he doesnt fuck and theres something inherently wrong with him anyway, so any kid he has would come out wrong as well. theres also something wrong with connor, and his wife will always be seen as his callgirl, and hes long since been cut out of the family legacy, so he isnt a candidate. shivs the only one left who could have given logan the heir he wanted - shes most like logan but is forced to become her mom, and shes now grieving logan and what their relationship could have been, and her biological, white child that (probably) belongs to one of logan’s underlings and will be born underneath the spectre of logan’s death might be the perfect candidate to be forced into the roy legacy, carrying on the line of succession

Despite everything I was really on the sidelines in succsesh so I need to think about this... I think one thing that personally pissed me off is the 'does logan love his kids' thing. Idk how controversial this is [if it is at all] but tbh. You can love your kids without liking your kids and you can be abusive despite the love. And saying that he Loved his kids isn't excusing any of his actions either? He loved his kids he viewed them as His they were like. Fucking collectors items. A genetic legacy. He loves them but he can't stand them. It's not really 'rancid' takes but I think it's insane when people say conflicting emotion or feelings can't coexist on the show where everyone is feeling conflicting emotions and feelings. so, i have thoughts about how the writers have been addressing whatevers going on with roman + sex, and the hints theyve dropped during the whole show. (TW for sexual abuse / harassment, incest mention?)

lets look at succession as a whole so far regarding romans sexuality. The things we know are: 1) He only got into relationships with women he thought his dad would date. 2) Based on his conversation with Tabitha when they were trying to have sex, he seems to only be able to get off if he can pretend theres something "wrong" about it. 3) At this point, i think we can say his bisexuality is canon, based on his little thing with his personal trainer. Which is intriguing because if he really jerked roman off after sessions, that sounds like, the most intimate hes ever been with someone during the course of the show? And the fact that its a guy maybe enhances the Wrong aspect that he likes- i mean, remember gerris dirty talk in season 2: "what would your family think? theyd be ashamed of you. and rightly so". id say maybe dudes are easier for him because of the inherent feeling of "wrongness" his internal homophobia brings out.

And yeah, the whole thing with gerri has an air of wrongness too, because of the whole ~humiliation sex talk roleplay she did obviously, and because he knew his dad would be against it. which probably makes roman be even more into her- besides the fact that shes smoking hot, of course, but tabs is also hot as fuck and he still couldnt get into her (Ha), so we know hotness alone doesnt do the trick for him.

Then theres the incest/sexual abuse jokes, which... theres a lot to unpack there. the whole bit about him getting assaulted by connor as a child. "im touched" / "me too". what he said to rhea in dundee ("look at you, fitting right in, like a camp counselor in my butt when I was 12"??? terrible). Roman clearly doesnt know why he cant have sex, and theres the theory going around that its related to some kind of trauma like that in his past. (Last ep when shiv got mad at him for the gross sexy secretary joke and asked what was wrong with him, he said 'i dont know. were working on it, its an ongoing process', and we also know hes doing therapy 'my guy's surprised i got through at all'). so if it is sexual abuse, he probably buried it so deep inside his mind he cant actually remember, and it comes out occasionally with disturbing humor.

then theres that one time in 2x09 when he asked logan if he had someone to talk to and logan said smt like, "you want me to talk to a shrink? you know, you may want to screw your mother, but I am okay in that department, thank you". that scene is really important because like, correct me if im wrong, but i think that was one of the first times someone in his family talked openly about his issues. And it was just to make fun of them, and of roman for needing & going to therapy. Roman was really upset about it, kinda seemed like he thought there was a line in the things they taunted each other about and logan really went there anyway.

...which leads us to S3. Weve seen the family press the matter about roman and sex this season in ways that they never really did before, which was maybe one of the things that triggered the boiling point of his dysfunction: him being so careless about it he goes against gerris boundaries, possibly ruining the most healthy relationship he has right now with a person he clearly has feelings for. and in turn, becomes his fall from grace.

Ep 1, logan getting mad at roman for worrying about him and asking him if he wants to suck his dick. romans clearly not okay with it, even though a couple of scenes later he mimicks a blowjob when gerri was talking on the phone about the president respecting logan. thats basically how it worked this season: he got upset when sex shit was brought up, then he shrugged it off with innapropiate jokes. Cause we have Ep 2, where shiv tells him "you cant hide under the covers with mommy", and "someday youre actually going to have to fuck something". which bothered roman so much he had to leave the room. to my knowledge, thats the first time his siblings mentioned his issues with sex so directly. "that was low." "its not my fault he has a sex thing, that was an overreaction. was i too harsh?" "are you kidding? he loves it. hell be jerking off wearing my ex wifes panties." it was shocking to learn they know about it because, how?? rumours going around? tabitha explicitly outing roman as her eunuch bestie??? idk, but it surprised roman too and that was the moment where that boundary of his sex life being a secret from his family was completely broken, imo. for the audience and also, for himself, probably.

then there was the football team finger-bang joke, logan calling him the F slur, shivs comment about him wanting to blow logan and fuck his mom, asking about his intimacy with tabitha, kendall telling him he could take the giant replica of carolines vagina home with him SKDHSKD The curious thing though is that he went from being upset and storming out, to learning how to own the jokes and even going along with them until they got to be Too much. like. To me, the worst one so far was definitely this interaction:

and then he mimicked blowing logan... christ bro. like, how did we go from his normal response to logans innapropriate comment to him in episode one to THAT. its like season 3 was a journey of roman being desensitized about his issues because theyre joked about in every episode and not really a secret anymore, and hes kind of been going off the rails because of it. He cant tell where the lines are, doesnt undestand when hes going too far. That, coupled with his dad almost dying in episode 4, was probably what caused his undoing this season. Going hardcore with everything logan wants, allowing himself to be manipulated into severing his connection with kendall and shiv because of him. its insane bro. hes definitely losing his sense of reality a little bit ("youre not real. youre not a real person" / "no real person involved" cross my mind every now and then).

i dont know, i just thought it was important, how it all came down to last episode, where logan, shiv and gerri finally confronted him in all seriousness about his problem (though logan did it for the wrong reasons, as he usually does). Which is huge, because there were no jokes this time from shiv and logans part. and gerri had talked about him "being a sick fuck" and "having a revolting problem in his head" as dirty talk before, but there wasnt anything ~sexy about the way she called him out in italy. in all three cases, roman couldnt hide behind his usual humor or flirting, so all thats left is to come to terms with it. Even though he still has a hard time figuring out what his problem is, so... will he get better or worse? im not sure- i just think losing gerri could be his breaking point.

its really interesting to me that the writers took it there, and i wanna see where theyre gonna go with it. if its ever gonna get properly addressed, or if theyll never really explain what happened to him. knowing this show, anything could happen, tbh.

HEEHEE i was already halfway through a draft of this when i got this message get ready for a really long answer. for clarity's sake, all birth years are based on the succesion universe starting in fall 2018 and ending up in summer 2019 at the end of season three

starting with what we know for certain: kendall is 40 (born in spring 1979) and logan is 80 (b. 1938), making logan 40 when kendall was born.

with roman and shiv, i was a youngest sibling roman truther until i found out that the writers actually have shiv as the youngest (and also specifically said in the pilot script that roman is 38 lol), SO, the closest i can get to remedy this making them irish twins, roman age 37 (october 1981) and shiv age 36 (september 1982). they would have been in the same grade of school throughout their childhood.

connor is a little bit harder because of alan ruck's age, and while characters and actors don't have to be the same age, i absolutely cannot see him playing any younger than mid fifties. i like to put a definitive number on things though, so I'll say 55 (b. 1963), so that would make logan 25 when connor was born and i could see logan following the traditional route for when he was raised to marry and start a family early on in life. plus it makes connor about eighteen years older than shiv and roman, which i think works out nicely for him to have gone off to college just as shiv and roman were born and graduate just in time to come back into their lives when they are just old enough to have conscious memories and play a significant part in raising them

where this REALLY gets fun for me is to take ewan and marianne into account, because i think it's very fun to imagine that marianne and connor were close throughout their childhood. so what we know about logan and ewan's youth is that ewan is the older brother, and at some point he enlisted in the military during the vietnam war, according to logan, with the motivation to impress some girl. SO. i think that it easily could check out that ewan saw his younger brother get married and have a child before he did, felt extra motivation to commit to a partner himself, and enlist in the military while he was with the woman who would be marianne's mother.

im making this up wholecloth at this point, but i like the idea of him being with his girlfriend/wife while still serving in the war but occasionally coming home, and she becomes pregnant while he's still active, so she relies a lot on logan's family to help with her responsibilities on top of raising a child while ewan is away. this also provides a really good basis for the rift between logan and ewan because his entire motivation for enlisting in the first place would have been with the end goal of starting his own family, and then he misses out on a significant amount of that because he's on duty while his wife and child are in canada meanwhile logan IS there while ewan's child is growing up. and just for extra pizazz, lets say ewan was still active when logan starts waystar (we know that logan has been ceo of waystar for 50 years, making him 30 when it he started the company) and throw in one more year of active duty for logan to get the business off the ground to really rub salt in the wound.

to sort out the years: 1963 connor is born, 1964 ewan enlists, 1965 ewan gets married and they become pregnant, 1966 marianne is born, 1968 waystar is formally started, and 1969 ewan finishes his time in the military. SO: when ewan returns to canada to stay this time, he missed the first three years of his child growing up, his wife and daughter have spent the majority of the time with logan's family, and on top of it all logan has started a burgeoning business. that'd be a strong basis for ewan to harbor some bitterness for logan i think, even if their actual falling out doesnt occur for several more years, possibly decades, after all of that goes down.

ALRIGHT. MOVING ON. in the pilot script, we get the following ages: greg early 20s, shiv late 20s, tom late 30s. obviously i don't think these are accurate to what the character ended up being, but i do think the age gaps remained relatively the same, with each of them being just under a decade older. i already said i put shiv at 36, and i like to stick with ten years between her and tom, so i have him at 46 turning 47 soon (b. 1972)

with greg i like to imagine he specifically hasn't hit 30 yet mostly because i think it's funny to imagine the ordeal of his actual thirtieth birthday happening. i also already said i have marianne born in 1966 and i imagine she and greg's dad weren't initially together for very long given the whole "he's gay" thing, (timeline-wise it would also check out if his motivation for being with her was the homophobia towards young gay men in the late 80s early 90s), but then she gets pregnant and he feels some commitment to not just abandon her (and, personally, I don't think he ever straight up abandoned her and greg. they probably had a somewhat painful seperation given how greg never mentions him throughout the series but he does mention his mother, but i don't think he was some deadbeat or that he left to 'go to the store' and never came back. again— im entirely making this up lol this is just the version of events that exist in my mind) SO all that said, i think greg turned 28 sometime over the course of the series so far, putting his birthday in late 1990 or early 1991, making marianne 25 when she had him.

AND FINALLY. honorable mention to willa who we have no context for her age whatsoever other than the actress's age. i have her at 31 (b. 1987)— i think she's at the age where she's starting to think about the long term sustainability of escorting for her personally (whether she'll be able to continue making as much money as she does now), which makes the idea of committing to be exclusive with connor much more appealing in spite of the fact that she doesn't seem too excited about the prospect of doing so in season one

what HAVENT i absorbed about succession. the roy family runs a company and logan is in charge but he keeps seeing cats where there arent any cats so his kids are tripping each other to try and be first in line for the throne when he inevitably dies. the oldest one is that guy from ferris buellers day off but he's not really in the running hes just like. a sad surrogate parent that all the other kids think is lame : ( kendall wants it so bad even though its clearly killing him and he screams into towels and raps badly and has ambiguous death scenes in pools. he has a sneaking suspicion that he is a bad person and he is correct. roman has a beautiful tall girlfriend but he doesnt care because hes busy running from whatever happened in his childhood that he can't talk about and trying to get logan's approval.. his attention seeking behavior is maybe the saddest because he straight up loves logan lol and logan does not care AT ALL. then there is shiv who is like. due to personal reasons i will be wearing a tight dress and having sharp objects-esque scenes with my mother. tried to be one of the boys and it made her cruel. speaking of their mother marcia doesn't get enough screen time apparently. then we have tom and greg.... greg is someones cousin and he wears boat shoes and is serving like. jonah from veep energy. tom is shiv's malewife and he married into this mess which arguably makes him the most insane one because he's the only one who's not bound by blood and at first he was like. just some guy for shiv to use and manipulate but THEN he gonegirled her by making an alliance with greg and then brokering some kind of deal with logan behind her back and she knows but she can't do anything about it. also he asked greg to be his roman slave. gerri is there too but she's above it all and i respect that

anyway mr roy kinda says greg can have a job, doesn't have time to listen to tom's asking hand in marriage, and i think says that kendall can't have the company because he sucks and wouldn't be able to manage it (I'm not sure because idk business words), and wanted the kids to sign contracts or something. then because it's his bday they fly in a private plane to some other person's property to play baseball. cousin greg is confused he just came her to get a job. mr roy tells the son of the person who owns the property (maybe he's 10 y o max) that if he hits a homerun or something he'll give him 1k or 10k idk some money and the property couple start stressing and the kid does too and then the kid fails and all the rich people laugh and you start to wonder why am i even watching tbis. anyway then kendall leaves early for business matters because he doesn't wanna seem to be slacking off in front of his dad, and then rest leave later in a helicopter but then oh no! what a tragedy! mr roy has a heart attack or stroke or old people thing in the helicopter and everyone goes to the hospital! the media learns and the mr roy company stocks start to go down down lots, so the kids fight over who to make executive this and executive that, old half-brother is making out with his young gf, tom proposes to shiv, the roy kids try to manipulate cousin greg, tom bullies cousin greg, mr roy's 3rd wife (current wife) seem to be the only one actually worried about mr roy's health, etc etc the whole episode is them arguing about money and company. kendall's ex-wife or soon to be ex-wife visits and i think they kiss or something but then she's like I'm not getting back with you bye. then mr roy is moved to his house and his wife refuses that the kids visit him. from now on when i say kids i exclude the older half-brother. the kids now all have jobs at the company, kendall is executive whatever because he used to work there before, some sort of important lady at the company is helping them manage stuff and she wears glasses but it seems they picked her almost randomly to help because the kids have no idea what they're doing. cousin greg shows up at the office and lets tom bully him around, tom has this weird good cop bad cop thing going on like bullying then ha ha bestie just doing this because we're family you know I'm kidding right? here's more bullying. so yes the mess up the company bad and some deals and the stocks go down down again, mr roy wakes up but his wife won't let the kids visit him because he needs rest, then like kendall and shiv force-visit him and like mr roy tells kendall that he sucks as a business man and he ruined everything and kendall tries very hard not to cry. roman is shown in his new office basically doing nothing or whatever. shiv fights with the step-mom lots and tells her brothers that step-mom is just gatekeeping their money. i think this is about where i fell asleep but yes you basically guessed the entire plot

i think the reason i dont understand shiv fans is because when i see her, i dont see a victim the way i do when i look at kendall and roman. the worst thing she has suffered in life is misogyny, as a white cis woman raised by a billionaire. she wasnt physically abused as far as we can see. and yes, they all suffered emotional abuse, but she was still the favorite! she is the star future CEO. she idolizes her father in a different way than the boys do because she hasnt been attacked by him the way the boys have. yes, misogyny bad. but jesus christ, she isnt traumatized the way roman and kendall have been by their father. we know roman has been physically (and possibly sexually) abused all his life, ken is an addict who is manipulated by his father at every turn, connor is barely even allowed to be part of the family. literally all shiv has going for her is being a woman. Mc is a bitty working as a therapists assistant. She is very special needs however because of her energy deficiency. Almost like anemia but it's magic.

She and the staff run a live in facility for bitty and monster therapy recovery. She herself is a patient turned employee because of her ability to read emotions. You can't lie to her because she'll know.

Doctor rosen is her partner in this and they often host group therapy together. It's not until a particular incedent that mc meets the boys.

Well all except for quicksilver. He's her personal doctor and often let's her stay over in his apartment in the employee wing when rosen goes on special business trips. To which he either spoils the fuck out of her or is a prickly pear of a mother helicopter. He absolutely adores her and has his whole apartment set up for her comfort.

She was his and still is his favorite patient. She even trusted him enough to tell him her story. Not even rosen knows what happened before she was admitted her. Just him and Mc herself.

As for the incedent in question. . . It was a group therapy session for four former convicts. A gang boss, an arsonist, and two prostitutes. Technically it was just supposed to be Dr Rosen in the room. But then there was yelling and a crash then more.

He adores Mc because she knows what he's feeling at any given moment and she let's him pick out 'the outfit of the day' for her. It's therapeutic for him. Especially when Mc picks out an accessory for him.

If anyone comments on MCs outfit or the occasional ribbon on his horns he has no shame about it and puffs up his chest.

Now if someone makes fun of of it there's gonna be a fight. No cap. He is selectively mute and doesn't speak often. So mc is invaluable in her ability to read his emotions. Especially when he comes up to her with a beaten up person or monsters and says "oopsies."

Kinda slow in the head but he knows the business. He's also boss at crochet and knitting. He can look at a complexly knitted sweater and copy it easily. However if you give him written instructions he won't understand it at all.

Hotaru is an arsonist. Not just because he's a fire monster. No. There's just something about watching the world burn that's just so intoxicating.

He was the one who started the incedent. He's entirely racist and didn't want to be helped by a weak ass human who assumes she knows him and how his mind works.

Mc however... When she came in he was shocked. Here he was ready to burn the whole place down and this little bitty comes in fearless even tho none of the gaurds are conscious and loudly as she can demands everyone stop what their doing.

He wants to know more. Your story. Your like. Dislikes. How you work. Hobbies. Do you like fire? Do you like cats? Him specifically.

Mc takes none of his bullshit and he loves it. Just watching mc get all angry and demanding is so cute. He can't help but listen because your cute satisfied smile is so much cuter.

Mc often encourages him to be braver. Simple excercises. Speech work. Body confidence. Inner confidence. So much work mc has to do for even just a smidgen of self confidence in sweets. But it's always dashed so quickly.

However with Mc, she always makes sweets feel pretty. Admired. With her around he has a lot more confidence. He feels like he's worth something more than a hole to stick a dick in.

He loves it when mc asks his opinion on the cute little outfits Eric picks out. They're always flawless in his opinion by the way. In a way Erik and sweets help eachother with Mc in between.
