This is the story about how I once upon the time passed out Nokul and those cow candies every brownish child saw at their BebeJon's house to my very white fourth grade class. Im'ma take you back to the night of February 13th, 2002, the year my mom decided to boycott Valentine's Day--I'm like 99.9% sure it was because of the masjid aunties who has convinced her that passing out candy with a little harry potter greeting cards were haram. And so thanks to their fatasses, she refused to buy Hila and I any valentines that year and I wasn't about to be the only kid in class who didn't pass out any. Being the DIY queen I was before Pinterest was even invented, I decided to make my own cards that year. I busted out some neon paper and those krazy sizzors every single white girl named Brooke owned. So there I am, cutting and gluing, sprinkling glitter while getting glares from my mom who's pacing in the hallways. I knew she was disappointed in me, but i wasn't about to let down my inner Martha Stewart for these cards were so fucking unique; not gona lie I felt accomplished aF. But then- I realize I didn't have any candy. I geared into panic mode and I knew 100% that my mom wasn't about to do a Walmart run even if I begged her, because you know, she didn't want anything to do with the 'kaffir holiday'. So I went downstairs and looked through our pantry and searched the nooks and crannys in all three freezers (what??? afghans like to freeze everything!!!) and finally come across a bag of mini snickers. It was during this moment to which the lights from above beamed down at me as I sat on Cloud9 thinking God finally heard me. I grabbed the tape from the office downstairs and ran to my room to stick the chocolates onto my cards. I pre cut 29 pieces of tape, grabbed the snickers bag, opened up the rubber band and my mouth dropped open. THERE WERE NO SNICKERS OK. IT WAS NOKUL FROM MY UNCLE'S SHIRNEE AND THOSE COW CANDIES AND STRAWBERRY WRAPPER CANDIES YOU'D SEE ON YOUR BEBE JON'S TABLE- like this was the biggest disappointment of my 2002 existence you guys. I still have flash backs and go into trauma when I think about my class mates faces as they were looking through their valentines, trying to figure out what kind of candy I passed out.
