Super Fight-U-Ary Day 2: The Finite World of Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite
If I could accurately convey how I feel about Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite, it would be the following “classic” theme.
youtube
I really don't know what else to write. It perfectly conveys every I feel about this game. If listening to this brings the following words to mind- “uninspired,” “generic,” and “nasty”- congrats, that's how I feel about Infinite.
youtube
My ill feelings towards for Infinite started the first trailer was shown. It just didn't wow me. I was happy a new MVC was real, even happier that two of the qualms of MVC3 was seemingly addressed in the first trailer (Mega Man and lack of Marvel Women). But as time went on, things clicked less and less for me. The gameplay looked bland. I liked much of the framework of Infinite: 2V2 (Yes!), free-form tagging system (OK!), V-Skill/V-Trigger Infinity Gems (ALRIGHT I GUESS!). In the right hands, Infinite does look fun, but so much of that also seems like a slog to get to. Infinite so much weird things that I never understand. For example, everyone can reflect projectiles? Leading to really, REALLY dumb situations. Then there's the low combo count. For me, more so than any fighter, Marvel was about the combos. Its loose-y goose-y restrictions on combos allowed for some amazing setups and hectic gameplay. I thought the free-form tag would enhance that gameplay but many ways it seems to have to limit it. What really drains my interest though is the presentation of the game. There just nothing there really. Visuals are sub-par to put it nicely. The music has already been stated. Put it this way: In terms of Infinite, it doesn't feel right to call it MAHVEL.

Part of Infinite lack of personality came from the from the forced attempts of Capcom (and to some extent Marvel) making their own “MAHVEL”. The best way of explaining its pointless things like 3 versions of “I Wanna Take You For a Ride”, “WHERE YO' CURELY MUSTACHE AT?,” and those costumes that referenced other characters (Zero and Frank as X, Deadpool as Cable). Things that seem like the people got from a quick glance and not actually participating in it. While 3 had much of that content, it also had a lot of heart. Returning character themes and a really dynamic art style cemented that fact. 3 also had something that Infinite lacks in spades: Freedom with the license. While 3 was one of the first Marvel Video Games crafted under the big Diz buyout, it was in development well before much of its license tightening began. Infinite wasn't spared this. There's no X-Men, no FF, and no one really that Marvel Studios doesn't kind of sort of have. In this sense, the blandness of Infinite isn't entirely Capcom's fault, but the incredibly shoddy and shitty copyright crossover event that makes any Marvel Game hard to do. Ask Marvel Heroes or Disney Infinity Season 3 on that one. Yet, Infinite much of games craftsman's ship still comes down to Capcom's old “2 year in-and-out dev time,” which feels much less done with this game.

Look, I know Infinite can be fun. I've seen it. There are characters do show the makings of a footing Two, in particular, are Venom and Jedah. Both of these guys seem like Capcom went all out, having an amazing set of animation for them. Of course, that doesn't discount everything else.
Tumblr media
This week Capcom released its 4th Quarter Earning Reports to shareholders. Infinite reportedly shipped 1 million. That figure is far less than what Capcom wanted and was instantly dwarfed as Bandai Namco reported that Dragon Ball FighterZ shipped 2 million copies. Infinite has been out for 4 months now, FighterZ had been out for less than two weeks. Things aren't looking too rosy for Infinite. Right now, Capcom seems more worried about fixing bugs than extending content. While X-Men and FF are now under Disney control, the combination of Infinite's lackluster sales and Disney's own random nature, do not seem like new content is coming for the game. Capcom has once again shifted its focus back to SFV as its main fighter. I do wish Infinite was something worthwhile. I'm sure a lot people do. But what we have isn't a MARHVEL game. Its an average fighter.
Calling a Capcom Marvel fighting game “average” feels like the worst insult one could give to it.
