12. do they have any exes? what was the relationship(s) like when they were together, and what is it like now? why didn’t the relationship work out?

iirc i mainly wrote that with meera in mind, but i’m not sure she’s “the most interesting” - her ex is sebastian, he was extremely abusive, i’ve talked about it a lot.

probably the most interesting person to talk about here is mel, whose relationship with her ex (charlotte) is so compelling that i honestly think we have more aus where that’s the “canon” ship than where mel is together or on an arc to get together with her actual “canon” girlfriend harper. though there are also some aus where the relationship with charlotte isn’t supposed to work out but it’s explored more than mel and harper at the moment. (in some aus we’re actively trying to figure out a solution to that, in others it’s more a function of harper not really being in the au, and in others still we just haven’t done any scenes with mel and harper together yet but it’s still very much in the cards for them. maybe i’ll get into that more depending on where the post goes.)

the whole thing started because in our percy jackson “canon” au, charlotte is percy and mel is reyna. percy and reyna interact briefly early on in the series way before reyna is a major character, and we decided to expand that interaction because we thought it would be fun. and it was all very 🥺 so i was like… what if they’re exes in base modern. and thus mellotte was born.

they’re absolutely each other’s biggest what-if. in the modern au they just kinda fell off, they didn’t really fall out of love. but charlotte is head over heels for franklin now. mel has another canon love interest, harper, but she’s honestly not really in the main modern au at the moment? mainly bc it centers around a production of a midsummer night’s dream and we figured out all the casting and stuff before nic created her. so i don’t really know what she and mel have going on except that they’re not dating yet but they will be. because of this, mel is still lowkey crushing on lotte, or in her words: “do you ever feel like you’re not actively wishing for someone to stop crushing on a random boy anymore but if they happened to kiss you at a sexy masquerade ball who are you to question fate”

as for what their relationship is like now, they’re still very good friends who give each other devastating book recs and want to play a very homoerotic erik and raoul in their fantasy of a genderbent production of phantom of the opera (which was originally conceived by raph and charlotte actually, raph’s christine).
