im so fucking sad. shinoda, my betta, has a hole in his fin :((( i think he's stressed. i'll be conducting a water change tomorrow, though. it's long overdue

Updates

Hey everyone! C from the Rainbow Rock Tank team here. We are sad to announce that on October 8th, 2023, our beloved Shinoda crossed the rainbow anemone. He was in water conditions that weren't the greatest, so we are assuming that the stress is what got to him. We gave him a great life regardless.

In happier news, the tank has been re-scaped and cycled correctly so we can have a fresh start! Our newest inhabitant is Bubba the Halfmoon Plakat.

His rainbow rocks are actually rainbow gems, so the rainbow rock tank theme is here to stay.

We are thinking of getting him a snail later on down the line, though! With a happier, healthier betta comes a need for happier, healthier tank mates.

Rainbow Rock Tank Update

Hi all!! It's been a while since we took a moment to update the blog. Unfortunately the Collective of ghost shrimp passed away because of water quality issues a little while ago, but Shinoda is still kickin!

Recently he got a bit of cloudy eye because of the clouded water and I took initiative to overhaul all of his plants today and put fresh ones in. He doesn't have the forest he's used to, but I'll be getting clippings from Xeno's tank shortly.

- 1/4 tsp of aquarium salts have been put in every morning and night ever since learning that he has a hole in his fin (or his fin is just very thin?)

- got him more almond leaves, haven't put them in yet

- got water ready for a water change

- a lot of movement from Catalyst

-2.5mL stress coat has been a daily occurrence

-conducted a water test with test strip

Shinoda is doing fairly well these days and I've been playing a lot of "chase the pinkie" with him and his brothers Freakshow and McGill. He's not yet a nibbler, though. He's very timid and backs away from my finger. It's cute, but it also probably gets him all bewildered. I also took it upon myself last night to remove a bit of algae from the tank… I'll be removing more during this next water change. After the water change, I'll be installing his new almond leaves. I also had a bit of a scare tonight because the plug for his filter came loose from my power strip, but I plugged it back in. The most he could've experienced was confusion. I talked to him a bit to calm him just in case, along with a few pets. Now he's just swimming around and he's got these cute little "feet" that he uses to "stand" whenever he stops swimming. He's so fucking cute. Anyway, tomorrow is water change day so he'll be getting a fresh gallon of water and some more aquarium plant food when that's all said and done. Pictured below are the results from his test strip.

- picked up an exercise mirror ball

- let him play with it for 4-5 mins. had the tiniest little flair. so cute.

- catalyst the horned nerite snail still chillin

- displayed signs of stress + hole rip in fin

- applied 2.5mL stress coat and a tbsp of aquarium salts as per my brother's instruction for a 5gal tank

- shortly after: less hectic swimming, catalyst starts making moves

all in all, shinoda seems pretty okay now. tomorrow is water change day, at long last. i bet he'll feel so much better with a fresh tank. catalyst seems to just be chilling near the heater as he's on the thermometer. my brother is going to help me water change, as well as put in the new water filter since the one i have now was only until i got the one made for a 5gal tank. i think i'll still do 2.5mL stress coat every now and then... i'll need to buy my own little package of it. maybe i'll do that when i need to replace his almond leaves and i'll also get a betta bunk. providing things like that for him is hard with the tight budget i have, but thank gods my brother has discounts from working at the shop.
