Hikaru no Go TV Anime Places Illustration on the Board for 20th Anniversary
Tumblr media
October 10 marks 20 years since the influential TV anime series Hikaru no Go started airing on Japanese television in 2001. The series, which adapted the manga series written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata into a TV anime series from anime studio Pierrot, helped revive the game of Go around the world, especially in the manga's homeland of Japan.
To celebrate the anniversary of Hikaru no Go, Pierrot released a commemorative illustration as well as opened a special website, and announced a pop-up shop at Shinjuku Marui Annex.

The Hikaru no Go pop-up shop is set to open on September 23 and run until October 3, featuring merchandise based on the above visual as well as chibi goods designed by renowned chibi artist Mame Shinoda.
The Hikaru no Go TV anime ran for 75 episodes between October 10, 2001, and March 26, 2003, with Crunchyroll currently streaming the series in both Japanese and English. Crunchyroll describes the series as such:
Hikaru Shindo is like any sixth-grader in Japan: a pretty normal kid with a two-tone head of hair and a penchant for antics. His life completely changes when he finds an old bloodstained go board in his grandfather's attic. The ghost of an ancient go master named Fujiwara-no-Sai was trapped in the board and soon becomes a part of Hikaru's consciousness. Together Hikaru and Sai make an unstoppable go-playing team!
