shino tries socializing ; word count: 1.5k

just some more introductory stuff before I get into Shino and Seina. Please enjoy my awkward beans <3

characters: seina umino, shino aburame, the rest of the Konoha 12 with Sai, a sprinkle of kakairu, sora.

synopsis: Shino goes to Kiba's football game to try and see Seina; Naruto finds out how long Seina has liked Shino for.

“You wanna what?”

“Come to the football game tonight.” Kiba laughed, leaning against the tree in the middle of the courtyard.

“Why?”

“Because–”

“There’s a cheerleader in our class,” Shikamaru started, interrupted by a yawn, “who Shino’s interested in.”

“Oi!” Kiba wiggled his eyebrows at the Aburame, smirking. “Which one? Do I know her?”

“I hope not,” Shino muttered, looking away and spotting Seina with some of her friends; some he’s seen in the halls with her and others he’s never noticed before.

“Iruka sensei’s sister,” Shikamaru yawned.

“Seina Umino?!” Kiba shouted it so loudly, her head whipped around from across the way. Shino was quick to cover his mouth, sheepishly looking at her and spotting her little wave. Kiba licked Shino’s palm, the latter scrunching his nose and pulling his hand back. “Ain’t she roommates with Nart?”

“Who’s roommates with me?” The blonde questioned, sitting down next to Kiba.

“Seina.”

“Iruka-sensei’s sister?” Shino hid his face in his palms, groaning low. Naruto smirked, spotting the blush Shino was sporting as he tried to clear his throat and change the subject.

“The game starts at 8. Come to the dorm at 7.” Shino nodded, trying to hide in his collar from the complete embarrassment he was still feeling. He laid down on the grass next to Shikamaru, in hopes the position would rush the blood away from his face and Seina wouldn’t have to see him being awkwardly flustered by his friends.

“Oi, Seina!” Naruto shouted the minute he walked through their apartment door. The brunette shuffled from her room, in the middle of wrapping the bandage around her neck with a slight confused expression.

“I thought you were hanging out with your friends before the game. Are you by yourself?” The blonde nodded, putting his bag on the counter and Seina wandered up to him, holding the wrappings in her hand. Naruto finished securing it for her.

“I wanna ask you something.”

“Sure”

“How do you feel about Shino?” Seina’s cheeks immediately flushed at the name, and she was thankful her back was to Naruto so he wouldn't see it. Or so she thought.

The Uzumaki flicked her reddened ear, laughing. “I knew it!”

“Shut up! You know nothing!”

“You like him!”

“Shhhh!”

“Since when?”

“A-A few months?” She said it more as a question, wanting to avoid the fact that it’s been for the better part of a year that she’s liked the entomology student. His ocean blue eyes widened as he spun Seina around.

“Is he the one you were talking about all those months ago that you thought was “super cute” and “checked all the boxes”?” Naruto grimaced at the memory. He was forced to listen to Ino and Seina squeal about boys because none of his friends were free that night to hang out.

“Stop putting them in air quotes!”

“It’s what you said!”

“Just,” Seina pouted up at the taller man. “Don’t tell him, please. Don’t tell him I like him.” Naruto could only smile and nod, patting her head.

“Here’s to socializing, Shino!” Naruto shouted as Kiba handed everyone their own shots. They were surrounding the outside of the locker room – Choji, Kiba, and Naruto standing in their jerseys while Shikamaru and Shino leaned on the wall together.

“This is what you do before a game?” Kiba grunted, shoving on his shoulder pads while Naruto followed suit.

“It’s tradition, Aburame!” One of the other players interrupted, patting him on the shoulder. “First time I’ve seen you outside of school.”

“Yeah, I wanted to try new things. Reason being–”

“Hey, Nart. Have you talked to Seina about me yet?” Sora rudely interrupted, looking at the Uzumaki who just rolled his eyes.

“Yeah and she said,” Naruto stuck his finger into his open mouth, pretending to gag. His other hand moved to smack Sora’s shoulder. “Also, don’t interrupt my friend.”

“Shut the fuck up.” He shoved the other before turning and leaving to go talk to some of the other people littering the bleachers.

“He’s still after her?” Shikamaru rolled his eyes, pushing off the brick and getting out his cigarettes. Meanwhile, Shino hid inside his collar, a frown etched onto his features. If there was someone already pining after Seina, he wasn’t going to get in the way. He would just be her friend and offer advice if she needed it.

“Y’all ever wonder why Seina wears a bandage ‘round her neck?” A quick glance at Naruto and Kiba added, “Maybe not Nart, but anyone else?”

“Naruto, do you know why she wears one?” The blonde nodded, slipping into his shin guards and cleats.

“I do, and I won’t tell ya why.”

“C’mon. What is she hiding?”

“Oh, I bet it’s a tattoo–”

“Maybe an ugly birthmark–”

“It’s probably a scar–”

Shino drowned out the sounds of his friends' voices when he saw the subject of said discussion walk by. It must have been the first time Shino had seen her without her seeing him. Her phone was pressed to her ear and she spoke animatedly, a smile on her face. She carried her pom poms in her other hand, occasionally smacking herself with the ends as she laughed. Shikamaru, who had been silently keeping an eye on his friend, patted the taller man’s shoulder.

“You alright?” Shino looked at him confused. Shika just pointed his chin in Seina’s general direction. “You know, Sora’s been pining after her for years, but she’s always said no.”

“Why?”

“I guess she’s not into jocks.” Shino tried not to let it set the fire of hope in his belly, but he couldn’t help it because, maybe he did have a chance.

Shino felt out of place. Literally. He was the tallest student in his class. He could easily see over the heads of multiple people even sitting down. He wanted to hide in the crowd, wanted to keep himself hidden just until the game was over and he could quietly slip out with his friends and head home. Really, he had no intention of finding Seina and making small conversations outside of class. At this point, he was regretting even coming out.

“Why are we sitting so far away?” Sai asked, not unkindly. Ino shrugged, tugging him down next to her.

“Because Shino doesn’t want to be seen by Seina.”

“But doesn’t she–” Sakura was quick to cover Ino’s mouth, hushing her while Sai just laughed.

“Shino’s like a tree, anyway. It’d be hard for her not to see him.”

Ino added, “And take your sunglasses off. It’s night time.” Before Shino could snarl a response, the drill team started and the cheerleaders came running out.

Finding Seina was easy; she was the only one with a scar on her jaw. Shino tried his best not to stare, he always did, but seeing her flying through the air with a bright smile on her face made it oh so impossible. She was like a magnet, his gaze always coming back to her.

“Nana, don’t look now, but the cute guy with the sunglasses is up in the bleachers.”

Shino’s here?!

Despite her teammate telling her not to, she turned her head slightly, eyeing the sunglass clad student. It was hard not to miss him. He was sitting directly behind her brother and his boyfriend.

It was almost impossible for the brunette to not be excited about Shino coming to the game. Maybe he was here to see Kiba and Naruto, but he was still there and she was still able to see him. Seina couldn’t thank the lights enough for the crowd being unable to see the blush creeping up her neck and cheeks.

After their set, Seina sat down beside one of the other cheerleaders, sipping from their bottles and panting their lungs out.

“Hey, you should ask him if he wants to come to the party tonight.”

“Oh, I don’t think he’s like that.”

“C’mon. You could try. Besides, I know Sora is going and at least if Shino comes, you won’t be subjected to his annoyingly terrible flirting.” Seina sputtered a laugh, shoving her friend by the shoulder. She leaned back against the wall, watching the football game come to a close. Once it was announced that their school won, Seina jumped from her seat and looked up the bleachers again, only to frown.

He’s not there..

She spun around, finding Kiba and running over to him, firstly congratulating him and then to question where Shino was.

“I’m not sure. If he’s not up there, he might have gone home.” His amber eyes caught the brief pout before she hid it with a smile and nod.

“That’s okay. I’ll just see him on Monday.”

“Yeah,” Kiba hummed. Naruto stopped beside the two of them.

“See you at the party.” She waved, running back to grab her bag and run up the bleachers to meet her brother.

“What happened?”

“She was looking for Shino.”

How Shino & Seina Meet ; word count: 843

Shino saw her coming. She was running from one of the classrooms towards the academic advisors on the other side of the hall. How she didn’t see him, he didn’t even know, but what amazed him more was the strength that came from her when she ran into him. She knocked his books from his hand, scattering them across the floor. She didn’t even look back! He sighed, bending down at the waist and grabbing his things before heading to his lab class.

Two times. Two times in one day Shino was convinced the world was trying to tell him he was important.

Right before class started, Shino watched as the one who rushed him in the hall walked timidly into the room. He sighed once more, steeling his resolve from the disappointment he was about to receive. He was convinced he wouldn’t receive an apology when she sat down beside him.

Nothing in Shino’s life surprised him anymore, but… there’s a first time for everything.

“I’m so sorry about earlier,” she muttered, her bright brown eyes looking up at him all wide-eyed and apologetic. One. “I was in such a rush to see the advisor, and I was running late because of class that I just kinda started running and wasn’t looking– I should have stopped to help but again, I was so late and–”

“It’s okay.” His deep voice was shaky as he gulped, trying to swallow the surprise as he cut her off. His face ducking into his collar, hiding his flushed cheeks. She still felt badly, but didn’t bring it up again. She waited for the professor to stop speaking after he assigned partners; “your table mate is your lab partner and no one is allowed to switch,” he had said lazily, waving his hand to allow the class to get to know one another.

She held her hand out, smiling at him. “I’m Seina. Umino Seina.”

“Umino?” His head tilted slightly as he took her hand. “Are you related to Umino Iruka?” If possible, her smile brightened.

“He’s my big brother.” She gave his hand a small squeeze before letting go. “What’s your name?”

“Shino. Aburame Shino.”

“Oh! Your dad is the head of the gardening society.” He furrowed his eyebrows. Two.

People often forgot about the Aburames and the work they had done throughout the city; how his grandfather had founded the gardening committee that allowed the city to flourish. How his late mother provided much of the fruits and vegetables sold in nearby grocery stores, and his father was head of agriculture.

“I’m sorry! Was that too forward?” She waved her hands in front of her face frantically.

“No. I just– I didn’t expect people to put two and two together.”

“Oh…” she went quiet for a moment, chewing on her lip and tapping her fingers on her notebook. Nervous. She’s nervous. “Well, um, I always wanted to study agriculture and during my research, Iruka showed me a book written on the city’s plant life. Your family has done so much and…” she trailed off, finally looking up at Shino again. “I must be babbling. I’m sorry.” Seina ducked her head, cheeks burning. “W-we should probably get started on some work.”

And they did. Every day after that, when Seina saw Shino in the hall, she’d smile and wave. A lot of the time, her friends wouldn’t even see him and look at her confused. One even asked who she was waving to when she pointed to Shino. Ah, the way his stomach flipped every time he saw her.

A month or so into their lab work together, Seina walked into the class wearing her cheerleading uniform and Shino quirked an eyebrow at her from behind his sunglasses.

“Like my outfit?” She wiggled her eyebrows before taking a seat on the stool and brushing the skirt flat across her bare legs. He just made a sound, thankful for the dark shades to conceal where his eyes were landing. She rested her elbow on the table, chin in her palm when she turned to him finally. “Do you like sports?”

“Not entirely.” She pouted. “Why?”

“I wanted to invite you to the game tonight. I’ve never seen you outside of school.”

“I’m not big on activities outside of school.”

“But you always hang around Kiba, and isn’t he the quarterback for the school team?” One day, Shino won’t be surprised by what comes out of Seina’s mouth. Today, however, is not that day. “He’s never invited you out?”

“I-I mean.. He has, but–”

“You just don’t like football games.”

“I don’t like crowds.” She nodded slightly, taking a peek out the window before jumping slightly.

“I forgot!” Seina rummaged through her bag, grabbing her phone and unlocking it to show Shino a butterfly. “I saw this really pretty butterfly yesterday. Do you know which one this is?” Shino gripped the phone quickly, looking at it more closely.

“A graphium cloanthus – it’s known as a glassy bluebottle. It’s rare to see them around here.” Before Shino could talk more about it, Professor Hatake walked in and started the class.
