Absolutely love it when mangaka and anime directors do Japanese Period Pieces or fantasy lands and draw heavy inspiration from them but explicitly make them leftist/anti-nationalist/anti-authoritarian instead of leaning into certain connotations and in Shinichiro Watanabe's case, make a point to try and spotlight marginalized and Indigenous narratives. Also, the fact that the Wano arc takes the barebones concept of the Chushingura story (surviving vassals of an unjustly executed lord) and dispenses with all the ludicrous historically politicized notions of seppuku and ultimate submission to authority–also notably a story that was adapted to WWII nationalist/fascist cinema–and immediately says "isolationism bad", "death to feudalism/crony capitalism/war profiteering/environmental destruction", "open up the country". It's not a perfect projection of my personal politics by any means, nor do I expect it to be by any means or intend to interpret it as such, but it's so good

Happy 56th Birthday Isshin Chiba!

Happy birthday to the hard working man who voiced Jin Kazama from Tekken for over 20 years in all of his appearances since Tekken 3. He is known for having a badass deep voice (though some say he is actually pretty versatile in terms of voice acting range). He was born in Kesennuma, Miyagi, Japan, and he graduated from Miyagi Prefecture Kesennuma High School. The man originally wanted to be a stage actor, but then he decided to attend an academy for voice acting in Tokyo instead. Isshin Chiba started voice acting in 1990 at the very young age of 22 years old, and eventually landed the role of Jin Kazama from Tekken in 1997. He had been the voice of Jin Kazama since he was like 29 years old. He voiced Jin Kazama not just in the mainline Tekken games, but also crossover games (Project X Zone) and even the Japanese dub of that shitty Tekken live action movie.

This makes him the sixth single voice actor across many different languages to have voiced a video game character the longest, the others being Ed Boon as Scorpion in Mortal Kombat (until he was replaced by Patrick Seitz (who voices Ragna the Bloodedge and Germany from Hetalia Axis Powers in English) in MK9 and MKX), Takenobu Mitsuyoshi as Kage Maru in Virtua Fighter, Shinichiro Miki (Millennial Tree Cookie's Japanese VA) as Akira Yuki, also from Virtua Fighter, Joseph D. Kucan as Kane from Command and Conquer, and Charles Martinet as the iconic Italian video game plumber Mario (as well Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and now he is the voice of a character from Dragon Ball's English Dub).

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Youko from Twelve Kingdoms! She starts out as being a wishy-washy people pleaser who doesn't really stand up for her own values and is kind of a hypocrite (e.g. ignoring the unpopular girl in school even though she knows it's wrong, and then earnestly advising the girl to be less gloomy to fit in better/so people won't bully her etc), and then she went through a period of being a paranoid nihilistic jerk after a ton of Bad Shit happened to her—like y'know, being isekai'd and hunted by deadly demons who are specifically out to get her, almost being sold to a brothel, the discrimination she gets being an otherworlder etc—but ultimately she's like fuck that i refuse to give up on the goodness of people and stands firm when her values are tested

(also the ending of the rebellion arc is rad as hell. "I would have every person in Kei feel like a king [...] I would have them each be the master of their own domain, and this starts with the freedom to stand proudly, with their head held high, in front of anyone [no matter their rank]—as my First Edict, I hereby decree all forms of prostrations abolished")

Answered here, but have another! Eris Willamette, from the obscure anime GEAR Fighter Dendoh, has an embarrassing (in her opinion) middle-name: Xena. Her parents are megafans of the show, and while she is fond of the show too, good luck getting her to admit it.

(the meta reason for this headcanon: Xena was used as a nickname for the dwarf planet Eris back when it didn’t have an official name yet)

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

Oozora Yuujin (Appmon)—hm. a lot of why i like him so much is a major spoiler, but there's just something delightfully unhinged when the Big Good of your cartoon asks a 13 year old kid if they're willing to give up their life for a friend, and implies that doing so is the pinnacle of their positive character development; to become the best version of themself, they must sacrifice their life to save a friend... and then the kid is just like "of course i'll die for my best pal! what, is that supposed to be a hard decision?"

Oda Shinichiro (2.43)—people who are passionate about something and know they'll never truly excel in/be the best at it is my kryptonite lol, so a volleyball enthusiast who is too short to play the way they wish they could play and only got this far with sheer love of the sport hits all my buttons! I also really like that he sees himself as fundamentally selfish, and while he's not entirely wrong about that, he's also the dependable heart of the team (I also like that he's feels selfish but would still go for his goals, even if he feels a bit guilty/ambivalent about it—"sorry, but go along with my selfish whims for a bit longer" indeed)

Youko (Twelve Kingdoms)—aside from all that i've said about her previously, i encountered the Twelve Kingdoms anime as a pre-teen. so a lot of the other magical adventures featuring female leads that i watched/was aware of at the time have romance as a central part of their character arcs, and it was really refreshing for baby ace me to see a cool female character whose character growth and adventure story isn't dependent on her romantic interest in a dude, but is instead about her becoming a braver, more compassionate person who is more willing to be true to herself. also i really like her light/minimal armor look in the rebellion arc lol

Anyway apropos of nothing God Bless Tatsuki Fujimoto and Eichiro Oda (and to a lesser extent Shinichiro Watanabe) for giving me two of the only examples of prominent, cool canon trans men in animanga like truly if not for Yamato and Togata I would have long since gone fucking mad

Okay I know it's almost time for episode 8, but I just quickly wanted to reflect on this scene from episode 7.

It's so amazing that Uchimura talked about this and it almost went over my head at the first time, because I was just thinking "well of course that's how it works, we all know that", but then I realised that no, we don't all know that, because here's the deal: animes have the fortune to play in an idealised world, where emotions are clearly cut and passion almost gives superpower to people, where a driven speech is inspiring rather than cringey, as it would be in real life.

But when we sit down and watch animes where the characters overcome any and every obstacles by sheer passion and willpower, it's extremely rare to be pulled back down to earth and be reminded that while there are people who can pull through with passion and willpower, they are also exclusively the lucky ones, the ones who were born talented or have a physical advantage or just have been practicing the act since they were kids, which are all things regular people cannot catch up with.

And I know Uchimura's the one talking about this, but this episode had one thing in its core and that was Oda's constant struggle aligning the thing he loves the most with his not-quite-enough abilities.

This episode was all about the guy who wants to make it, but regardless of passion and willpower, it will never happen.

I personally identify with Oda on so many levels here (I pretty much feel the same about art, as Oda feels about volleyball) and I think I'm not the only one, especially since talented geniuses are even rarer in real life than in animes.

And this is also why I would be happy if we could see a bit more of Oda in the anime as well, because while it's obvious that he loves volleyball and that he's too short, I just don't think everyone gets how much pain he goes through.

He's thinking about quitting and giving up constantly, yet incapable of doing so because he can't just stop loving volleyball and pick something else. He is doomed to failure, he can be on teams in high school and college, maybe even on the bench, but he could never go pro, he could never play in a higher division - from the bench or otherwise.

And he does his best, he's good, he's strong, he's agile, but he's short. It doesn't matter how hard he trains, it will never be enough, because others who were born to be better will always be beating him.

Of course Uchimura says that it doesn't mean he won't give his all, but his (and Oda's) all is probably nowhere near the all of "geniuses" like Chika or Yuni or even Aoki, who are well rounded physically and technically as well.

I actually think about this a lot, because this is not a pain that only comes around at times, it is near constant. Any time you see someone who's got the ability that you just can't have, succeed in the thing that you want to succeed in, it grates away a layer of your soul and so Oda to remain this enthusiastic and outwardly positive requires such a strenght that I don't think the anime makes it clear enough...

my japanese is nowhere good enough to do a full translation (esp in fukui dialect), but the basic gist is that Oda and the rest of the boys planned a surprise birthday party for Aoki—only for Aoki to give them a gift in return, which is a training plan designed to pinpoint and overcome their weaknesses 😎

the dialogue at the end is just. so cute. Oda and the boys are dismayed by how Aoki caught on to their not-so-secret birthday surprise, and Aoki is being smug (like he does) but thanks the others for their ‘surprise’ :3

also... they really did the whole “wait... you knew?!” “well it wasn’t hard to put the pieces together” “and here I thought we pulled it off...” “oh you sweet summer child, it’s still too early for you to beat me in strategy” “you aren’t cute at all” “aww don’t say that, I really do appreciate it” “geez... but whatever, this is fine” thing with Oda and Aoki huh.
