may be completely off the mark bc memory is fallible but i hope that shinaya actually functions the way i Think it functions where its actually like 'hah, girl who finds herself inexplicably attracted to random classmate mistakes her attraction to a classroom love, when in actuality her attraction to him is because she killed herself in front of him in a different timeline and became his snake in order to save their siblings. classic mistake! 😅" bc then it parallels how all the snakes eventually make their way towards mary, with how initially in route m shintaro and ayano arent part of each others backstory at all, but only after ayano becomes ayaki does ayano begin to cling to shintaro's side in subsequent timelines, bc even though they were (presumably) classmates in route m, they didnt cross paths at all.

basically "this dude's personality is so rotten that the only reason anyone became his friend is because of some inexplicable snake bond forged by a doomed timeline" LMAO.....

and aside from that. its also a setomary parallel where while setomary is a 'snake' (seto) inexplicably making its way to their 'master' (mary), they forge a relationship built from courage, while shinaya's 'snake' (ayano) making its way towards their 'master' (shintaro) forms a relationship built from cowardice. wouldnt that be a nice parallel 😏

SO UH SORRY THIS WILL GET KIND OF LONG: ShinAya is my OTP EVER, I think the first ever ship that I've ever ship This Much, my teen days def is Shaped by Them 😂 and I can ramble on and on about them and possibly overwhelm you. I will (try to) keep it simple for you though! Because their story IS Confusing and it goes Deep, it deals with character death, depression, suicide, etc. BUT I will try to explain the Base for shinaya only 😂

*SUICIDE is the core major trigger warning for their story so please keep it in mind.

ShinAya is the ship name for Shintaro and Ayano, they are central characters for the multimedia series Kagerou Project (it got Vocaloid song series with animated music videos, manga, novel, and anime, and while the core story is the same, all media tells different timelines and different endings for each timeline- *notes: this series got time-traveling / time-loop in it, but you don't have to understand that part yet to get to know about shinaya's base)

To make it short (well this is still long but...):

Shintaro was a natural-born genius and he always gets perfect score in all subjects (though he Hates PE and is actually a scaredy-cat), he gets a bit aloof and sees other people as beneath him because of it, basically he's an Asshole. He didn't have any friends and kind of refuses to expand his social circle until he met Ayano in middle school. Ayano was just the opposite of him, she's nice and friendly and smiles a lot, and she's also not the smartest in class 😂 She always gets low scores during tests. As Fate seems to think they're destinied to be Close to one another, they just had to sit next to each other in class.

Ayano slowly worms her way to Shintaro's heart and without realizing it, they've spent a lot of time together and Shintaro even tutored her on the subjects she's bad at. Ayano might've been Shintaro's first ever friend and the one who still treated him kindly despite everything. Shintaro started to open up to her and showed her the sides that he never showed anyone: like how he hated PE class and how he liked reading romance stories and cute stuff.

They're still close even until high school, which they're once again in the same class together and sit next to each other. Ayano was the one who introduced Shintaro to their other friends in high school, and Shintaro slowly opened up to them too. He's less of an asshole and more of an awkward teenager who struggles in communicating and be social.

Everything's fine and normal, until one day Shintaro found Ayano crying alone in an empty classroom. It was the first time he ever saw his close friend Ayano who was always so cheerful and sweet cried like that. Shintaro got scared of many things, and after a moment of hesitation, he decided to leave Ayano alone and pretended nothing happened, like he didn't see a thing. He didn't know that one decision to ignore her would have so much impact on his life.

Because soon after, they've found out that Ayano's dead. It was a suicide, she jumped from the school's rooftop.

Shintaro was so shaken that he dropped out of school and shut himself out of the world for 2 years. He thought it might be his fault, because he didn't know a thing about her, because he didn't reach out to her. He also can't find the real answer to why she did it. He's so smart, he should've known, but he just couldn't understand it.

The effect Ayano's death got to him is so huge, in one of the worst timeline endings, Shintaro killed himself after killing his other friend because he just couldn't think straight anymore </3

BUT!!! This series is actually a fantasy story too so- What is exactly the truth behind Ayano's "death"? Was it truly driven by depression alone or something else? 👀 Honestly it would get Even Longer if I elaborate on it so I won't do it here 😂

ALSO!! Shintaro canonically loves music and it was implied that he created songs too, and one of the songs he made is "Transparent Answer" which is about his lament on Ayano's death and how she means a lot to him and that he would never forget her. (of course the real song is created by the creator but in the canon-verse, it's implied that Shintaro's the one who made the song and it FUELED my shinaya heart like no other)

AS FOR THE REASON WHY I SHIP THEM, hmmm I really don't know, I just remember their story Hit me So Much and little me just haven't found a love story like theirs before. Transparent Answer was the first MV of kagerou project that I watched and I was just so TOUCHED by it like "THERE'S NO WAY THE STORY ENDS LIKE THIS!!" and I started searching the series up. The more I found out about them and dug deeper into their story, the more I love Them and the whole series (ofc they all got their flaws, but I've already fallen in love even with all the flaws 😂)

People these days mostly argue that shinaya doesn't really have any romantic appeal or that they're problematic, well that is just for you to decide! But for me there's just nothing that can beat their tragedy, I just love them so much.

To ease your heart, they will be reunited again in the climax of the story <3

Shin(A)Yaki? (canon and/or fanon)

Oh man after years of not shipping ShinAya finding out that I ship ShinYaki is wild.Canon - Not Bad. When Ayano confessed to Shintaro after becoming Retaining Eyes, though, the main reason why I was like “I can get behind this” was because I thought she was making a mistake. To give up your own humanity in faith of a boy (freshly 18 is still a dumbass age) you JUST met with an infinite amount of time ahead of you where he isn’t even AWARE of you… That’s just so much potential for angst, which is why I wrote Route M-X like RIGHT after ch 69 spoilers were revealed. So now that Ch 70 revealed that she’s still like optimistically in love with him and all 8))) serene and stuff (which is how she is in the anime, I guess) I just think it’s like “Ok I guess, good for you.” It shows how optimistic Ayano can be I guess? And that she learned to see the good > bad, esp since Route 2 M Ayano WAS kinda really salty before meeting Shintaro. So uh.. good on her.I do want to see them interact more in canon besides “Shintaro dies and meets her in a classroom AGAIN” or “Shintaro ignores everything she says in Route XX”. Fanon - Rubs my hands together yeah now THIS I can get behind,, mainly bc fanon ShinYaki (…. or at least what I wrote in Route M-X) actually shows Yaki becoming broken from what she witnesses through Shintaro’s eyes. Because we see signs that at least 2 Route XX’s happen (in LTM and in Mekakucity Actors). Heck, I wrote Route M-X with the premise that when she first became Yaki, she ONLY saw Route XX’s for centuries until she herself stepped in to stop the cycle. And say what you can about undying love and loyalty, but no human or author can ever comprehend what it’s like to live hundreds of years, and a lot of works nowadays have come to the conclusion that it actually sucks. And in Yaki’s case, she LITERALLY can’t do anything and is just forced to watch Shintaro fuck up over and over again. I like fanon ShinYaki because Yaki stops seeing Shintaro in an idolized light and instead sees him for who he truly is: a broken boy who messes up a lot. I like the interpretation that she actually becomes angry at Shintaro AND herself in Route XX’s because that’s such a shitty conclusion after 18 years and he’s the closest thing she has to project her emotions onto.I like it even better with the theory that Shintaro becomes depressed BECAUSE of Retaining Eyes, since subconsciously remembering past timelines make life “predictable” for him as shown in Toumei Answer. I like it because I like it when characters realize that they have ugly feelings and that their self-sacrifices aren’t actually as great and glorifying as they could be.Uhhhhhh basically I like fanon ShinYaki bc it’s angsty as hell HAHAHAHAHA. Has a lot of potential for slow burn and ugly feelings and anger. And well, if Route M-X shows how I really feel about the pairing, it’s that I actually don’t really care if they together in a romantic sense (esp since it’s physically impossible at the moment). I would just like them to gain a mutual understanding in the end and to realize that despite the fact that they eventually do reach a Summertime Record, they still suffered together to get there and can relate to each other over it.

i was thinking abt how ayano and shintaro r the only two characters who ever die by suicide (shintaro is only in some routes but STILL.) and like how that's a way of showing that they had the potential to understand each other (bc in my opinion they r actually very similar) but not until either of them were dead. idk does this make sense? i just thought of this today so this thought isnt very refined yet i need to think abt it more

they ARE similar!!!!! i totally agree. shintaro and ayano are totally similar people. they're both Justice Seekers but are so depressed and have such horrible self worth they can't actually be proactive about things. but then they are :3

i wish we got ayano pov from hs and why she liked shintaro. I've always thought ayano's crush on him is...cute!!! because she's literally going thru the horrors, her mom died, her dad is being Strange, and she has to take care of the house and her siblings all alone PLUS later learning of all the horrible stuff about the daze and clearing. and yet. she's also a normal hs girl who has a silly crush on her classmate. not that we ever saw it but i definitely think ayano got to see at least once the shintaro we see who fights for good and doesn't let fear get to him like when he yells at the fucking terrorists or acts all cool when they face clearing in the novels. i think ayano got to see shintaro being Heroic or whatever and she was like THIS is the kind of guy we need to be recruiting in the mekakushi dan🔥🔥🔥 like seriously im delusional abt this but i think there should be a shinaya backstory abt this.

Go listen to full disclosure from steven universe and you will understand my ayano vision for this. sorry that was weird. i think ayano wanted to keep shintaro as uninvolved as possible, haruka and takane were inevitably already in it. she just wanted to make sure to take them Out of it but shintaro.. i think ayano always had the feeling shintaro would get involved. i think ayano gravitates towards shintaro because she needed help and she needed a hero and deep down she knew this was him. but she never manages to properly reach out or even understand it i guess. but i think ayano did understand shintaro maybe even more he understood himself. on the other hand shintaro DID NOT understand ayano AT ALL but like you said, he could have. who knows how things had gone if shintaro had walked in when he saw ayano crying in the classroom!!! imagine ayano managing to pour her heart out and tell him what's gonna happen to their friends and her family. he would've helped. shintaro would've done something. but ayano wouldn't want him to bc he would get hurt but at the same time she WOULD want him to because she's so scared and alone and desperate for help *holds head *

ayano's words to takane when she's projecting so hard. there are times you want to tell someone something but you wind up being too late. ayano was never gonna say anything to shintaro because she didnt Want to. she knew what she was going to the roof for. while takane immediately makes a run for it to say something to haruka, she is just too late and has no control over her fate. whatever im normal!

originally i was gonna draw her blushing and getting all silly with this sorta funny smile i like drawing->🥴 something like. a teehee moment cuz imagine that and then her leaning against him while giggling super silly *explodes* isn't that so cute. but i changed it bc i felt it would've needed some dialogue, since post str takane doesnt get pissed at Whatever, if she's mad its probably worth getting mad at, so it would've had to be specific... what would get her mad but also not mad enough to quickly teehee over haruka instead... i couldnt think of anything to write. so i changed it to takane deciding whatever she's yelling about isn't worth it anyways and haruka is comfy :3 i think haruka is rly good at calming her down just by existing she's like Oh right. *cat head bump*

the hc was early dating harutaka being giddy and silly abt each other which is why i was gonna draw it that way initially. but then i didnt lol. or like early reunion actually, not even dating. like haruka can just sit next to takane and their shoulders touch and takanes like omg🥰 hehe. i think they'd be cute like that. i think they'd get all excited and giggling and sooooo stupid about each other. sorry if this is cringe to the viewers but thats cute come on.

the worst pda haruka and takane exhibit is this early dating/about to be dating stage where they're just talking with their faces really close together whispering and giggling. sorry to talk about setomary like no one even mentioned it but on the subject of pda. i think only kano and kido (and maybe ayano) are setomary pda haters (not setomary haters. just when theyre pda) and the rest are like :3❤️ theyre so cute. but for harutaka since theyre so fucking cringe EVERYONE is kind of annoyed. they just fucking pretend nothings happening because its cringe. maybe during the first week after they reunited they're like aww its so nice haruka and ene reunited :3 but it gets difficult to look at fast.

seto and mary are being more normal they do shit like seto carries mary and theyre hugging all the time etc etc nothing too tragic. maybe seto calls her princess maybe mary gives him some flowers thats just what theyre like not only to each other but theyre that way to Everyone they just happen to match each other's level of swetness perfectly so no one thinks twice abt it. setomary is more natural and cute abt it. but haruka and takane act like they're in highschool at the back of the classroom whispering and giggling and its augh. it's insufferable to witness. i imagine the dan just widening their eyes to each other and mouthing Oh My God to each other all the time when harutaka start acting this way. like haruka and takane do everything except kiss each other in public seeing them kiss would actually be better bc what the hell is this. kido probably forces them to exhange seats like theyre in highschool for real.

so okay kagepro has been my main interest for like 5 years now and despite that i could never really... name what bothered me about shintaro? like there's always been Something that made me super iffy about him and fjkdgdjfdkls WELP THIS IS THE CONCLUSION I CAME TO

SO UM disclaimer im nOT hating on shintaro. it's mostly a hate letter to jin because at the end of the day, shintaro is jin's accidental self insert. jin might be a talented song writer and musician, and i mean he's good at writing to a degree since he managed to keep so many people interested in his story despite how confusing and complicated it is

but....... he’s made some shitty Questionable decisions in some stuff. shintaro’s entire personality being one of those decisions. so, yeah.

if anything this is just me being like SHINTARO DESERVES A REDEMPTION ARC which will never happen because you know.....jin

anyway, i hope the keep reading works in mobile and if it doesn’t im truly sorry, i tried:

it always really rubbed me off the wrong way how shintaro treats ayano and takane (and of course im not the only one). but it especially bothered me after we get to know about haruka and shintaro's friendship

OKAY SO for the longest time (really ever since the release of volume 6), i've been like "well, even if i really dislike the haruka/shintaro ship, it's obvious shintaro has a thing for haruka" ASFGHG like genuinely i just thought shin was gay for haruka and that's why he treated him so much better than takane and ayano. obviously very much one sided since haruka never treats shintaro like he's special, like he never treats him differently than he treats ayano or takane

so i was talking to my gf about this headcanon and as i spoke i started to realise that.... it's not that he treats haruka much better than ayano and takane? it's that he treats haruka as an equal and treats ayano and takane like they're inferior. big lol right here 

with ayano, i've always just thought "ok, we just don't know much about their friendship back then" because to me it was just ridiculous that ayano would have a crush on a guy who is a dick 100% of the time so i just thought he WASN'T a dick 100% of the time. because if he was then how did ayano know he was into music or into shoujo manga? or that he hates pe class and stuff? i still genuinely believe shintaro was someone she could have a conversation with but thAT'S BESIDES THE POINT (i mean that whole thing was written by a sexist himself so like it’s kind of a paradox trying to make sense of it)

the point is that he just!!! treated ayano so badly all the time. we have to ASSUME he wasn't that bad all the time whereas it's canon and known he was a dick to her. like. i love shinaya but if you asked me to defend it i rly wouldn't know how to start

and his relationship with takane is what has always bothered me the most. like the thing that has actually been my biggest :/ with shintaro. because... it just really bothered me that he treats takane super badly right off the bat?

because he comes into their classroom, takane begins to quietly explain the videogame to him and he's like "u act overconfident and u suck" FOR NO REASON? like how the fuck would he even know takane was acting overconfident (WHICH SHE WAS NOT?? BEFORE SHIN CAME IN SHE WAS CRYING BECAUSE EVERYONE FOUND OUT SHE WAS A GAMER? SHE WAS LITERALLY ASHAMED? she only acts confident when haruka asks how are they gonna manage with just one prize but there's no way for shintaro to know this at that time?) and then he WINS

it has always bothered me SO. MUCH. that shintaro wins against takane. because when he comes in and pisses her off it pisses off the reader too and you're kinda hoping he'll lose so he can shove up his ass everything he said but that doesn't happen. he wins against her anyway, basically proving himself right

and from that point on takane is not nice to him ONCE. she was nice to him as soon as she saw him because she's a decent person but after that she doesn't even give him a second chance and TBH I DON'T BLAME HER. with shintaro, takane's loud and annoying and most of the time i'm like "girl shut up you're just embarrassing yourself" but while i was thinking about this i realised how much i relate to the situation?

because as a girl, not being able to get the other person(male) to treat you seriously you just. scream??? like you get frustrated to the point of yelling, which only works against your favor because now that you're being loud you're being That thing. you're being Hysterical... big 😬

so even if it wasn't on purpose, jin accidentally used takane to portray exactly how a woman feels when she's not being treated seriously lmao. jin tried to portray her as the hysterical girl who never gets her way. back then she was just being crazy and loud and shintaro was Over It

honestly i don't blame her for making his life a living hell while being ene especially after seeing he's into so much porn because... yikes. i know stuff like "haha that guy's a pervert!" in anime is like a "Funny" thing but HONESTLY perverts are just. terrifying. and for takane to see shintaro was literally a pervert + the way he treated her back in highschool... HONESTLY... you’re my hero, takane.

but yeah, takane likes videogames but takane is girl so what are we gonna do? insult her right from the start without having MET her. without seeing her play. just insult her because she's a girl and she already lost against him in the national's so hey, how good can she be.

and sometimes i see people complaining about how badly the mekakushi dan (and even the fandom) treats shintaro, always making fun of him and stuff but HONESTLY?? everyone in the dan realises he's disgusting, that's why they treat him like that lmao. being troubled and depressed doesn't excuse his shitty behaviour towards ayano and takane nor his shitty thoughts about other girls.

ayano just put up with the way she was being treated because she had a crush on him and shintaro knew it, which i bet didn’t hurt his already big ego lol (smarty pants boy has a huge ego sorry. he does) (only after ene starts Tormenting(tm) him he starts to act more self conscious about being a dropout, unemployed and a pervert) (but overall shintaro knows that at the end of the day he’s smarter than everyone so like :) )

because it's not only with ayano and takane?? he's constantly underestimating momo and treating her like a dumbass. he doesnt give her the time of day, like. ever (which is where jin shows his amazing talents again. momo, takane and ayano are all specified to be academically dumb and those are the only characters to have that Fun Fact. they also happen to be 3 of the 5 mekakushi dan girls)

and with kido in children record 1 and 2 she's like (breathes) and he's like SHE WOULD BE SUCH A GOOD MOTHER!!! only because she's doing the logical thing which is aiding a  hURT CHILD?? hello mr shintaro sir, hibiya is Dying can you shut up about kido's motherly eyes?? thank you

whereas ayano just never stood up for herself, which is why her banter with shintaro wasn't chaotic like the one he had with takane and why takane was constantly like "bitch are u dumb why do u keep following this idiot"

and with mary he's the Grossest gosh i re read that amusement park scene from reminiscence forest and it was WORSE than i remembered. when mary asks shin to go with her to a ride and he's like lol no, he... ok imma put screenshots because i can't even recreate

shintaro takes his love interest ayano for granted (because in volume 8 of the novels it's said that he knew ayano had a thing for him) treats takane like That just because he feels superior than her (for real i feel like he's the kind of fuckboy who's like "OH YOU'RE A GIRL AND YOU LIKE VIDEOGAMES? THEN TELL ME THIS RIDICULOUSLY SPECIFIC THING ABOUT THIS ONE VIDEOGAME" ASDFGH)

shin's an overconfident smartass you can't talk back to because as much fun as the fandom and canon makes of him, ultimately he always wins? he's the hero of the story. he's the one everyone looks at and says "whoa he's so smart!" and honestly characters (kano and takane) who begin hating him end up liking him solely for this reason: spending time with him. no, he didn't change one bit. nope he did not. they just stayed around enough and got attached. HONESTLY? same. with all of this, i would hate shintaro except for the fact i already love him.

he only ever respects the one other male person in the group (haruka and even seto) (he has his issues with kano but Hey as much as i love kano he doesn't do his best at making people love him so i guess that makes sense)(and hibiya is 12 so hardly anyone takes him seriously).

ayano is technically shintaro approved too because she’s the cheerful type who doesn’t call him out on his bullshit. through shintaro’s pov ayano is only his dumb classmate who had a crush on him and was there to elevate his ego. she seems like a plot devise to make his manpain have a point. AYANO, who is so important to the story and has her own problems. yes, this character feels like a plot devise through shintaro’s pov. that sucks.

he doesn't get development. he doesn't even get that much nicer. he's kinda the same dick he was in higshschool except that now he's more sweaty and panics more easily. i'm not gonna say he's the same dick because that's not correct but, yeah, i mean...?

until he apologizes to at least ayano i won’t consider he changed at all dfjsklsfslfkadsjl i can’t say it enough: HE TAKES AYANO FOR GRANTED AND I AM GOING TO GO INSANE IF SHINTARO DOESN’T APOLOGIZE TO HER AFTER ALL THIS TIME

like shintaro could still be a cool character even with all of this, i just wish it was introduced and talked about. i’m not saying he shouldn’t be flawed i’m just saying everytime it looks like hes gonna make a change he just goes back to some stupid comment. and its like. why

it just!! really bothers me!!!!!! shintaro was mean and he’s never held accountable for it. even when it seems like he is, he ends up being the hero anyway so whatever i guess!!!!!!!!

so yeah. haruka and seto (who btw have a pretty similar personality, with both of them being quiet and cheerful): shintaro approved apparently! they don’t make snarky comments when he says shitty stuff so thats enough i guess
