CHAPTER III
Tumblr media
As an assassin working for the Hwangs, you have proven your loyalty to your benefactors for more than a decade. But when Lady Hwang's plans for a rebellion land you in a bride selection for the Crown Prince, you find yourself at a loss. Unfamiliar with the ways of the gentry, your reliance on a previously unknown informant is your only source of hope. And yet, you learn very quickly that no one in high society can be trusted, including yourself. Because who else but you is there to assassinate the King?
WARNING: please do check the masterlist for potential triggers/themes you feel uncomfortable with! this chapter doesn’t contain anything particularly triggering i can think of, so you’re good!
Tumblr media
“All set?”
All around you, servants busy themselves with your baggage, last minute carriage checks and whatnot despite the setting sun. The carriage in question is an imperial carriage, one sent specially by the palace. Footmen are loading trunks upon trunks of perfumes and cosmetics galore, all “necessary for your daily use”, according to Lady Yeji. Apparently, gowns are provided by the palace’s in-house tailors, some of whom were summoned for the sole purpose of catering to the brides-to-be. As such, the only gown you’ll be bringing is the one you’re in right now.
It’s even more extravagant than the one you’d first tried on, a soft violet piece that has even more gauzy, intricately-woven layers resembling flower petals draping the flowy skirt. The sleeves droop delicately across your shoulders, and paired with a half crown braid with too many hair accessories, you look the part you’re supposed to play – a petulant, spoiled younger daughter of a renowned house. It seemed Riki and his fiancee had gone to great lengths to ensure your gown was altered to fit perfectly. Even better, the dress had numerous cleverly hidden pockets, perfect for concealing your weapons.
You have a feeling Lady Hwayoung is going to fit in perfectly in the family business.
Yeji and Hyunjin, playing their roles perfectly, reach for you in a tight embrace. They’re better actors than you thought, judging by the way they make this seem so natural, as if you’ve always been the younger sibling they dote on. Although Hyunjin’s a little stiff, you do your best to summon a few fake tears, squeezing him back. All this to fool the king’s footmen. You cannot believe the lengths the Hwangs are willing to go to.
Hyunjin pulls away. “Maintain your correspondence with us, alright? We’d like to know how you’re doing.” He eyes you knowingly, and you get the message. Send whatever information you can when at leisure to do so.
To his credit, Riki simply pats you on the back. “Try not to get into too much trouble, sister. We wouldn’t want you to miss my upcoming wedding,” he quips. You appreciate the normalcy, but now you’re at a loss. What would Hwang Eunji say?
You rack your brains for an answer. “Well, maybe I’ll be married even before you. Who knows? Maybe the prince will take a liking to me upon seeing my face.” Your stomach roils, even before you can finish. Catching the eye of the future monarch is the last thing you hope to do, especially since you’re there to kill his father, and possibly him too, depending on his personality.
With a final assessment of your belongings, you draw a steadying breath. Everything’s been accounted for, even the finest details. A miniature blueprint of the palace sits in your pocket, saved for your nightly escapades. The final piece of the plan left to fall into place is you.
“I’ll be off, then,” you declare, lifting your skirts. “Try not to miss me too much.”
Your gown flounces as you step into the carriage. Over the past few weeks, you’ve been training nonstop to move gracefully in the heaviest gowns Yeji owns, carefully imitating the gait of a noblewoman. Yeji is a perfectionist, and even the slightest misstep didn’t escape her. Stealth was your default, but as a daughter of an esteemed house, the last thing you needed was to be caught sneaking around. Thus, you’d like to say that your entry into the carriage was more than smooth enough.
As the carriage pulls out, you hear Yeji call out to you. “Good luck!”
You really are going to need all the luck you can get.
Tumblr media
The carriage ride is smooth, though you admit you don’t have an experience as a point of comparison. The coachmen are silent the whole ride, the only sound being the occasional whinny of the horses.
You gaze out the curtained windows, gathering your thoughts. In your mind, you run through what you know. If intel is correct, the ceremony should start with the welcoming of the candidates, which means you’ll have to hit the ground running and start interacting with the other ladies upon arrival. Your entrance has to be immaculate. Drawing attention to yourself because of your incompetence would not be ideal. Get through the welcome ceremony and first dinner with the royal family, and you should be free to roam the palace grounds in disguise.
Your most crucial task on hand is to attempt to deduce your informant’s identity, or at least try to establish communication with them. It won’t be easy, seeing as the informant isn’t aware that the Hwangs sent their spy in the form of a bridal candidate (although they should have guessed as much). But how do you try to hint that you’re a spy without telling anyone you’re a spy?
Before you know it, the carriage pulls up to the gates of the palace, and you get your first look. The palace is much, much larger in person, and no less intimidating. The gates are a gleaming gold, the palace’s facade a haunting beauty, basked in the light of the setting sun. Elegant spires rise to the sky, looking over a sprawling front lawn covered in rows of neatly planted flowers of every colour of the rainbow. To the right, you spot the hedge maze you saw in the blueprints. There is a grim feel to it all, as though the castle holds secrets unknown to those who do not set foot in it. And to think this is only the exterior.
The carriage pulls to a stop at the foot of a grand staircase. It is meant to lead up to the palace’s main hall, where the ladies are gathered. Already, you see numerous other identical carriages, each painted with the royal family’s crest. The door swings open, and a hand reaches out to you to help you down. Though you don’t really need it, you take it anyway with the softest smile you can muster. Before you can even turn to thank him, a haughty voice calls out from behind you.
“Purple, hm? You must be the Hwangs’ candidate.” You look over your shoulder. There stands the most breathtaking girl you’ve ever met. With her striking features, and the perfectly condescending curl of her lips, you know exactly who she is. You didn’t spend hours staring at portraits of the candidates to fail at profiling.
“Lady Karina. A pleasure to meet you,” you greet, curtseying as elegantly as you can. As far as you know, she’s high society’s precious gem. Any ball she attends becomes the highlight of the month. You’re certain even Yeji’s spoken of her and her impeccable fashion sense, and by the looks of her outfit, you’d say she lived up to the rumours. With her white satin gown and its nearly never-ending train, she has the season’s trends incorporated into a single piece of clothing. She looks every bit an angel, clashing spectacularly with her image, no doubt carefully crafted by herself.
Lady Karina smirks. You notice she does not return your gesture of politeness. So much for staying out of trouble. “You failed to have a debutante, didn’t you? It must have been hard for you to be so sickly. I hope your condition remains well while you’re here, little violet.”
You grit your teeth, repressing the instinct to fire back. If you were truly Hwang Eunji, you would likely be more than miffed to be belittled with your family’s representative flower, and with a noble upbringing, you have to adjust your unhappiness to befit your newfound status. “Thank you for your concern, but I have fully recovered. My lack of a debutante won’t affect my performance in any way.”
In all honesty, it is a mistake on Lady Karina’s part. Beautiful as she is, in your eyes it does not matter, so long as she doesn’t get in your way. And right now, it seems she is hellbent on tripping you up. If it comes down to it, you have no choice but to eliminate her by any means necessary.
Of course, the idea of having to take her life repulses you, no matter who she is.
Turning her head of perfectly coiffed hair away from you, she sniffs, making her way up the steps. Embarrassing as it is, you follow in her footsteps up to the grand hall.
Servants push the large doors open, bowing deeply as you pass through. Lady Karina keeps her head held high, while you fight the instinct to nod your head back. Normally, you’d be in their position. This new role of yours is going to need some getting used to.
Already, the ladies are gathered in the throne room, a vibrant sea of colour. Coral pink tulle, seafoam green silk, sleeves so large they billow as the ladies walk. Every girl’s hair is adorned with their representative flower, just like yours. It is now that you realise why the women of the court are said to be comparable to delicate spring blossoms. They are every bit the breath of fresh air you suppose they would be to an ageing nobility. In a way, they shine so brightly they clash with the palace itself.
You slip past your competitors, ignoring their icy gazes. Before you sit a pair of golden thrones, one more elevated than the other. The king and his queen’s rightful places, although they’re currently void of said monarchs. For a moment, you try to picture any one of the girls gathered here today seated on the throne to the left.
In walks a gangly man, a scroll rolled in his hands. The poor butler attempts to get ahold of each girl to confirm their identities, but with the tension so thick you could probably chop it into more than a few pieces, it’s a little difficult to catch everyone’s attention. Luckily for you, this gives you more time to listen for their names. There’s Kim Minji, with her youthful, demure gaze. Shin Yuna, with her bubbly giggles and sweet talk. Bae Jinsol, who exudes a charm so powerful it chokes you when you speak to her. They’re younger, and pointedly less closed off to the others.
And then there are the slightly older ladies of the court, who have learned what it takes to survive here. You can tell by the way they smile with tight lips, hand placements perfected, eyes holding the same commanding gaze. They know their power. They know their influence. All the more reason to be wary of them. They are the ones who could see through you, see through your every movement. Lady Karina is one of these, and beside her are the girls your master taught you to be like: Ahn Yujin, Jang Wonyoung and her cousin Kyujin. With Jang Wonyoung in this competition, there is bound to be trouble. She is the kind of pretty every girl wishes to be. And to the side-
Oh, stars.
At the centre of it all stands a girl, too beautiful for words. With silky auburn hair that hangs down her shoulders in curls, and a form-fitting gown the colour of the midnight sky, your heart nearly stops beating in your chest. You don’t need your training to know who she is — Ning Yizhuo, the daughter of a grand duke, whose beauty men would fight wars for. Betrayal runs rife within her suitors. You would know, seeing as you’ve done in many of them for betraying your mistress in favour of Lady Ning.
Right. The mission.
Before you can clear your head, the butler from earlier approaches you. “Lady Hwang Eunji?”
You jump, nearly forgetting to react. “Ah, y-yes.” You summon whatever regality you can, adjusting your posture so the dress doesn’t sag on you. “Is something the matter?”
“No, my lady,” he replies quickly, bowing slightly as he unfurls his scroll, ticking what you presume is your name off the list. “Simply confirming your attendance. The palace welcomes you, Lady Hwang. Dinner will begin shortly in the next room over, where you will have an opportunity to dine with the royal family. We will escort you all shortly.” He smiles, a kind one, but unsettling nonetheless when paired with the bitter aftertaste of being called by your mistress’s title.
Smoothing out your skirt, you nod. “Right, thank you.” There’s very little you can say without letting on that your actual position is far, far lower than his.
Afterparties are one thing, pre-parties are another. You hadn’t even known such a thing to exist. Either way, the ladies refrain from wining and dining too much before dinner, but it doesn’t stop them from having a glass or two. It loosens tongues, and removes some of their inhibitions, clearly. You decline politely. You’ll need a clear head for tonight.
At last, the doors open to a spacious corridor. The guards lead the group through to another set of closed doors, decorated with little paintings of wine glasses and an assortment of food. The dining hall, presumably. The faint smell of roast meat wafts through the gap, tickling your nose and tempting your empty stomach. You haven’t had anything to eat since you left the Hwang estate.
With practised elegance, the guards open the doors with a flourish. Hanging from the ceiling is a chandelier, overseeing a grand dining table overflowing with all sorts of delicacies. Local cuisine, made by the palace’s renowned in-house chefs. It’s a spread more luxurious than anything you’ve ever eaten, and yet your attention, like everyone else’s, is not on the food at all. Rather, all have gathered their skirts in a curtsy towards the people seated at the very head of the table – the royal family.
They certainly look the part, with their matching gold-trimmed clothing. The queen, with her hands folded in her lap, smiles at all the girls like a mother would their child. The king, with his heavy gold crown resting on his head, only gives you a curt nod of acknowledgement. You suppose the queen says something, what with her lips moving and all, but you barely register her words. How could you, when your target is seated right before you? And to his left…
The crown prince himself, in all his royal glory. His haughty gaze as he regards the ladies (all gathered for him, might you add)  is all you need to guess the kind of person he is: a spoilt first son, set to inherit a vast kingdom he neither cares for nor deserves. Crown Prince Jay, who currently has on an expression that tells you he does not want to be here any more than you do. In some ways, you suppose it isn’t such a bad thing. In fact, the greatest threat in this room right now does not seem to anyone from the royal family, but the man right behind the crown prince.
With his back facing the white wall, the man’s dark blue waistcoat makes for a striking contrast. Silvery hair frames his clever features - a memorable image. You opt to ignore the queen’s welcome speech, instead studying the mannerisms of who you guess is the crown prince’s courtier. There is something almost sinister brewing behind his eyes, if you were to speak from experience. You’ve heard of him, and his allegedly outstanding knowledge in just about everything. Which begs the question: just how much does he know about Lady Hwang’s faction?
As you study him, his eyes lock with yours, as though he’s sensed your gaze on him. Startled, you quickly turn back to the queen, feigning rapt attention, even though you genuinely have no idea what she has said up till this point. But in the corner of your eye, you see the ghost of a smirk.
Goodness, what trouble have you landed yourself in?

MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
“here.” you looked over to riki setting your drink down on the table, you looked up at him and smiled as he sat down across from you at the cafe table.
“did you-“
“ask for extra peppermint? yes. even though it’s gross..” riki mumbled, you giggled and sipped your hot coco. it was freezing cold at least to you and so the coco helped a lot.
“when is your project partner arriving?” riki mumbled, sipping his coffee.
you shrugged, “any minute.” setting your coco down riki watched you, he wasn’t necessarily happy over this whole project partner thing. riki knew your project partner, and safe to say he was just irritated by his presence. he didn’t know why, but he was just irked.
so when the OTHER ricky walked in, he just waved and watched as the other boy sat next to you.
“hey y/n!” he smiled, you grinned back at him.
“hey! it’s cold outside are you sure you’re bundled up enough?” you asked, grabbing your books. riki just decided to go on his phone to pass time.
“yeah! it’s crazy how quickly the weather changed huh? are you warm enough?”
you and ricky made small talk which didn’t bother your best friend. that was until one sentence.
“your hands are freezing y/n!”
riki’s eyes shot up to see the discount ricky’s hands on yours. if stares could kill a man, discount ricky would be six feet under.
“oh! yeah that’s why riki, well, my riki got me hot coco.” you let go of his hand and turned to your hot beverage.
nishimura riki would be lying if he said some pride didn’t bubble up inside him, which didn’t go unnoticed by the boy sitting next to you.
riki didn’t take notice and he went back on his phone, he just wanted your project to be over so he could walk back to the car with you and just be away from people. by people he meant discount ricky. this was strike one for his patience.
“i think we should work more on the details of the piece of art itself. like things that normal people look past in monet’s art. there’s a story everywhere.” you suggested, this art project was pretty big for your grade. and you were just relieved that your project partner agreed to do monet.
“that’s such a good idea y/n.” ricky smiled.
oh please riki thought to himself, at that point discount ricky should just get on his hands and knees and beg for your attention. that’d be way less embarrassing than kissing your ass at every little- wait what the hell
to riki’s horror, discount ricky, was readjusting your beanie so your hair didn’t get in your face. this pissed him off, strike two of his patience gone. riki was the one who spent HOURS trying to crochet you that beanie last year and now he’s going to have to make you another one because discount ricky’s grimy hands touched it! riki felt his eye twitch, he ended up making eye contact with the boy next to you. a smirk ghosting his features.
riki wanted to kick his shin under the table or maybe throw his hot coffee-
“i think we should also choose one of monet’s less known works aswe- oh ouch…” you mumbled rubbing your hands, whenever you wrote or sketched too long your hands would hurt. riki always took notice of this so he looked up proper hand massages- safe to say he could be certified- WHAT THE SHIT?
discount ricky grabbed your hands and started massaging them.
strike three
“can you get your hands off her?!” riki finally snapped, “god at this point it’s revolting! i’m right in front of both of you!”
your eyes widened as you watched you best friend actually lose his temper, yeah you’d seen him bicker but this was different.
“what are you two dating?” ricky asked, if you were in a tv show you’d see the angry lightening bolt hit both of them. this was not good, you quickly packed your bags and grabbed your best friend. apologizing to your project partner.
“what’s his fucking problem?!” riki stomped through the fresh snow to your car.
“what’s his problem?! what’s your problem? what the hell was that?! are you okay?!” you had a million questions. and they were flying out.
“i- what- how is this my fault!? he had his grimy discount ricky hands all over you! only i’m allowed to do that as your best friend!”
it was really hard to take him seriously as you finally got to the car laughing. you leaned against the hood trying to catch your breath.
“y/n this isn’t funny!” he stood right next to you.
you finally caught your breath, “i’m sorry where did the nickname discount ricky come from?”
“well obviously i’m the better one way more deserving of, um hello, touching your hair, massaging your hands because im youtube certified, AND THE COLD HANDS THING?! he was flirting with you shamelessly in front of me!” riki swung his arms around like a crazy person trying to explain that the end was near.
your hat fell slightly as you laughed again which riki fixed gently before speaking again, “then he’d smirk at me like he knew he was getting on my nerves! like that discount version of ME KNEW HE WAS MAKING ME ANGRY!”
“should i take my hat off and give you sanitizer? since you touched my discount ricky infected beanie?” you asked, unlocking the car and throwing your backpack in the back. you turned around and bumped into riki.
“actually yeah take off that hat. i will sanitize it and crochet you a new one.” riki grabbed the hat off your head and gave you his own beanie.
“should i sanitize my hands too?” you asked giggling, going to open your door but slipping on black ice.
riki immediately caught you, “um guess who couldn’t catch you- discount ricky. i’m clearly better for you so.”
you started laughing again, hitting his chest playfully, “you’re acting like a jealous boyfriend.”
“is that a bad thing?” riki asked quickly, suddenly unsure of himself.
you shook your head no, “it’s cute.”
riki smiled down at you; it was obvious he was at least a little smug.
“you know what he didn’t contaminate?” you asked, still giggling, your eyes flickered from riki’s eyes to his lips. immediately he got the hint and took his chance.

“are you being serious right now, riki?”
your anxiety levels peaked as u stare at your boyfriend in disbelief. he shares your panic and frowns.
“why would i lie about this, babe?” he answers, his tone nervous. niki looked like he was going to shit his pants— whereas you would’ve taken a photo of if it weren’t for the current circumstances. “please forgive me.”
“i’m so close to punching you right now, nishimura. who forgets their wallet on a date at a millionaire’s restaurant?” you whisper-shouted.
there was a server behind you two, secretly eyeing you both in suspicion while handing out the meals. any decibel louder and the security might be called in.
“i’m sorry, okay?” niki pleads, his hands pressed together in a begging motion. you sigh and shake your head.
so much for a date night.
it took both of you weeks of preparation to be able to match the restaurant’s vibe. the establishment being settled at the top of the namsan seoul tower made the prices (un)reasonably expensive.
your boyfriend, who was on your last nerve, dismissed your worries on whether the prices were too high (quote: “i got the money under control. just leave it to me, princess ;).
turns out all his smugness about the finances went back and bit him in the butt seeing as how he forgot his card at home— almost an hour from the tower AND no one is back there to fetch it for him. talk about bad luck.
“if i could just call jay-hyung to go back and bring it here then mayb-“ a voice cut him off. you turn to the sound and your heart drops down to your ass. the last possible person you’d ever want to see.
“excuse me, sir and ma’am,” the staff started off. “we’ve noticed that you’ve… um… been finished for quite some time and,” they give you an awkward smile. both of you reciprocate.
“were wondering if there is anything else you’d like to order, or if you’d like the bill now?” your eyes widen. you whip your head to your boyfriend and signal with your eyes ‘no!’. he looks indecisive and nudges your foot underneath the table.
you held back a remark and resorted to softly kicked his shin instead.
“um… we’d actually like to order this special please,” you point to the menu, “if we can.”
the waiter grins and nods his head. he straightens his posture and walks back to the kitchen, ready to inform the team of the new order.
“riki. babe. love of my life. please call jay right now, i’m afraid this distraction won’t last long,” you lean over the table and grip his hands in yours. niki’s phone was in his hand, dialing the numbers of your potential saviour.
“it’ll be fine, n/n,” he assures you, rubbing his thumb over yours in an attempt to calm you down. “the most we’ll get is a scolding- but at least we won’t wash dishes!” niki laughs.
you roll your eyes and pinch him, inciting a small ‘hey!’ from the boy. while he did relax your nerves- just a little bit- the annoyance from earlier was still there.
with other couples chat in brisk, you two are stuck in a dilemma with only one person to rely on. your hands still intertwined, niki squeezes yours as comfort- whether for you or himself, we’ll never know.
“if we finish this next meal and jay isn’t here, consider this our last restaurant date, ‘ki.”
niki’s eyes widen in fright, practically leaping over the table to grab your shoulders. he shakes you around like a ragdoll while the other customers send over weird stares, their own conversations dimming down slowly.
“wait- please don’t say that, babe!”

happy birthday to me and sorn 🥳💕
lee heeseung
honestly he wanted nothing more than to make you feel special. he had a hard time figuring out what to do with you cause you’re never specific about what exactly you want.
hee ends up making you a cute handmade card with a bunch of kisses that he used your lipstick to make 🫠🫠
ends up accidentally sleeping over at your place the night before and having to run back to his apartment before you wake up, to which you thank him for when he comes back :))
more undercut !!
park jay
another who just has a need to make you feel special. but jay’s love language is gift giving, so obviously he was a little flashier.
wakes you up in the morning with breakfast in bed and cuddles with you until 1 o’clock, when he makes you get ready and go shopping with him. he gets you everything that you are even remotely interested in cause he wants you to have everything you want :DD
at the end of the night, jay takes you to a nice restaurant and you end the night with a movie night together in the comfort of your shared home 💕💕
sim jake
wants you so see quite literally everyone who you care about. jakes such a sweetheart that he plans everything and anything for the day months ahead of time.
he makes all the calls to your family, friends, and even just the girl at the grocery store you like talking to lol. the entire day gets him kinda stressed out, but he’s just happy you’re having fun and enjoying your special day.
the two of you end up just laying in bed and falling asleep at 9 o’clock to some old movie in the background 💞
park sunghoon
another one who thinks a handmade gift and a good meal are the perfect thing ⭐️⭐️ he gets to your place around 9 o’clock cause he wanted to let you sleep in, but he also wanted to be the first person you see when you woke up.
he made you one of those cute little ‘boyfriend coupons’ that you see on pinterest, and was considering putting his on pinterest himself.
sunghoon spent the whole day with you in his arms and he quite literally would not take his hands off you urgen after both of you were sleeping peacefully in bed with the love of your lives.
kim sunoo
more shopping to make his birthday girl feel special!! his main focus of the day was just to spend as much time with you before you were whisked off by your friends at night time (that he planned to have them do)
he made sure that you were having fun every second of the day, to which you answered with yes every time. sunoo with his fluffy personality shinning through, pre-ordered cute matching hoodies with his and your own initial ❤️❤️
after picking you back up from hanging out with your friends, he drew a bath for you and you ended the night with some good snacks and your perfect boyfriend.
yang jungwon
also wants your birthday to be perfect, but also wants to be a little selfish for once and keep you to yourself. he had asked you what you wanted to do weeks prior and you had both agreed that you wanted to just stay at home together on the day of, and then have some fun the day after.
he was completely ecstatic. he started off the day with waking you up with sweet words in your ears and a cute stuffed animal given to you by wonnie. throughout the day you lounged around the house together, in the kitchen, living room, bedroom, honestly even the bathroom.
a calm day with your sheep was all you wanted and much more needed for your special day :))
nishimura riki
part of him wanted to stay home and cuddle with his birthday girl, but the other side of him wanted to have a cute little date day. he decided that he wanted to bring you to pottery studio and glaze some cups. he had jay help him plan the scheduling
if he’s being honest, he thought you looked adorable focusing on painting with your tongue poking the side of your cheek.
when you got home, he literally tackled you into the couch, which is where you stayed for hours and letting some show fade into the background as you basked in each other comforting presence.

FILE_03 : by the tail
gotham city.
[seven days since your mother was murdered.]
"Is she here?"
The voice was familiar to your sensitive ears, and although your eyes remained fixed on Mrs. Lee, you shifted your attention mentally to the two—no, three—wait… four?—figures making their way over to where you and Mrs. Lee stood in the home office space. Their footsteps were as quiet as heeled loafers could be against hollow wood floors. The Lees' home in the suburbs was a safe distance from the heart of Gotham, so the neighborhood was much nicer and much more like a home. The Lees had been ushered here after Lee Sungjae had been found murdered, and they'd resided here since.
You had been called in the day after the incident happened—that was the day after you had gone to see your father. We must work fast, Yn. They've already gotten to one of my… men. That was what he'd told you, and when he elaborated, you had discovered that every news channel now blasted footage of Lee Sungjae's dead, glassy eyes.
You had been busy since, trying to both grieve in peace and work at the same time.
"—take more time, Yn-ah. Losing a loved—" Mrs. Lee's voice cracked slightly and she covered her mouth.
"Mrs. Lee—"
She waved your hand away, angling her body away slightly so she could regain composure. "No, no. It's alright. I'm alright. I just… I know how it feels, and I think you deserve time to yourself, as well."
Of course you told her about your mother. You had to take another day off when one of your coworkers had noticed how spaced out you were when you came in. No, you didn't tell her your mother was murdered the same way her husband had. That was between you, your father, and the motherfucker who did this.
But for now, you were supposed to be here to answer the police's questions about your employer. You had been one of three of Mr. Lee's secretaries for the past several months now, having come under his employ about a year ago after Choi Enterprises turned you away. But magically, a few days afterward, this offer from the office of one Lee Sungjae had arrived in your inbox. When one door closed, as they said, another opened. Whatever guardian angel was looking over you then certainly wasn't looking over you now though.
"Miss Ln?"
You turned around and expected to see Commissioner Kim Namjoon and your co-secretary, Shin Ryujin, but you hadn't expected the two others with them. They stood behind the two aforementioned, both in black domino masks that covered the top halves of their faces. Their suits were skintight, most likely to allow for more mobility, but they also accentuated their starkly muscular figures. The taller one wore a suit of dark blue and black, while the other donned a maroon red and black ensemble. You recognized them, respectively, as Gotham's very own Nightwing and the Red Robin. Vigilantes. What were they doing with Commissioner Kim?
Ryujin bowed her way out, gently taking Mrs. Lee with her. That left you with the others.
"Hello, Miss Ln," Commissioner Kim greeted with a tired, but not unkind, smile. He fished a small notepad out of his coat pocket, ballpoint pen clicking to life. "My name is Commissioner Kim. These two… not sure if you need any introductions."
When you remained silent with only a nod, he continued, "We're here investigating the murder of your former employer, and we were informed that you often handled his familial affairs. We've already spoken with Miss Shin and Mr. Yun, but we wanted to ask where you were last Wednesday night at ten o'clock."
You were very aware that Nightwing had decided to wander about the office, eyes taking in the shelves and the notes and the desk… then there was Red Robin, who's attention was pinned intently on you, arms crossed firmly over his chest. There was something awfully familiar about these two. "Is that an accusation, Commissioner?" You asked, leaning against the edge of the desk.
"It doesn't have to be," he said airily. "Just answer the question, Miss."
"I was at home," you answered, schooling your face into neutrality. "You can ask my employer's wife and my coworkers—I was taking time off to grieve my mother's death."
The shock was not the most stark on the commissioner's face, but on Red Robin's. "She's dead?—" He coughed; even Nightwing had paused his movements. "I mean, I'm sorry for your loss." You didn't recognize the voice, but you suspected it was probably being disguised with a voice modulator.
The commissioner sent him a bewildered look, but turned back to you. "I'm very sorry for your loss, Yn. Truly." He asked with almost a grimace, "Can anyone corroborate your whereabouts? I understand you were most likely home alone, but perhaps a neighbor, a significant other…?"
And there it was again—that shift in energy as both the vigilantes in the room stopped to focus on you.
You shook your head with a tight smile. It probably wouldn't bode well if you revealed to them who your father was or that you paid the Iceberg Lounge a visit that day. You were also a little too preoccupied with survival to have a significant other, and you hadn’t been close enough to a neighbor in years. "No. Just my cats."
There was something so familiar about this Red Robin character, but you couldn't put a finger on it. Or maybe it was the way he was staring at you with such pity (and sympathy) that made you wish he was someone else. Either way, you needed to know why these two vigilantes were put on the case, and what they might have already found out. At the moment, it didn't seem like it would pose a problem, but you thought it wouldn't hurt to be a little more careful.
When you arrived home that night, bones aching as much as your head pulsed, you collapsed on the couch. A few of your cats began to swarm your legs, soft fur tickling the skin exposed when your pant leg lifted. Blue, a very introverted Russian Blue who you managed to make an extrovert when it came to you, plopped himself onto your lap like a warm, vibrating mass. You ran your fingers through his fur to the symphony of someone's purrs (you figured it was Byeol; he was quite vocal).
"Should I invite him to the funeral?" You murmured to Blue in question.
He stared back at you, then silently turned his gaze to a particle of dust floating in the air.
You exhaled back against the couch cushions. "I'll take that as a yes."
Tumblr media
In the dead of night—because there was always a dead of night, even for Gotham City—you pulled a dark beanie over your head and the top half of your face. Two holes had been cut and sewn for your eyes to see through, and at the top of the hat, two little triangles sat akin to ears. You recalled the night you had crocheted this on a whim, your mother having done most of the work.
"Blue wants it to have cat ears, mama," you'd told her just as she brought out her tub of yarns.
Your mother's eyes glittered. "Is that right? Well, we'll have to add cat ears then, won't we?"
You thought it would be fitting to find her killer in this. You thought it fit you quite well, at least.
The rest of you was dressed in black, and your hand grazed over Soul's fluffy, white head as you propped open the second floor window. "I'll be home soon," you whispered to the last of your family, then disappeared into the night.
Tumblr media
"I can't get why this is so familiar to me," Beomgyu voiced into the echoes of the Batcave, hands braced against the main monitor as he stared at the copy of the note: A Debt Repaid. He had been staring at it for the past week, not consecutively, but it hadn't left the forefront of his mind. Like you.
Soobin trudged over to his brother with a bowl of cereal cradled in his large palm, the other hand spooning the sweet milk and wheat flakes into his mouth. "Mm. Maybe give it a rest for a little, Beom."
"And do what?"
"How do you know Ln Yn?"
Beomgyu whirled around just as Soobin settled into the desk chair, waiting. Beomgyu made a scoffing noise, eyebrows flying up to his shaggy bangs. "Where did that come from?"
Soobin smiled and shrugged. "You tell me." He slurped up a bit more milk before adding, "You're the one who reacted like that in front of everyone when she said she was grieving her mother's death. You sounded shocked that she died."
"Well yeah, wouldn't you be shocked to hear someone else died so close to another's death?"
"Stop trying to bullshit him, Gyu."
Both the brothers looked up at the voice who had just entered the underground space. Yeonjun strolled into the main area in a white tank top and sweats, hair sticking up in different places. He stretched his arms above his head and yawned loud and wide.
Soobin cocked a brow at him. "Nice of you to finally join us, hyung. How'd the date go?"
"Great," Yeonjun quipped. "We're going on a second one soon. I think Felix almost sent me off with a kiss goodnight." He slumped onto the edge of the desk, eyes lazily taking in the images and information displayed on the many monitor screens. "This is our stiff, huh?"
Soobin sent him a look that distinctly said 'No, we're just looking at dead bodies for fun.'
"Yeah," Beomgyu replied. "The note the killer left is so familiar to me though. Have you seen it before?" He knocked his knuckles against the monitor with the note.
Yeonjun's eyes narrowed on the screen, before he leaned back with that bored look renewed on his face. "You're both idiots. It's from that one killing a couple weeks ago."
Beomgyu and Soobin traded looks. "What?"
Their eldest brother leaned down to reach the lowest drawer at the desk. From its depths, he fished out a large bag of chips and grabbed a handful to stuff his face with. "Y'know," he garbled and gestured vaguely with his crumb-dusted fingers. "Beomgyu, you know! You were there with me. It was that one lawyer guy who was found dead in his car beneath the bridge. That same note was taped to his windshield."
"Oh yeah," Beomgyu drawled, while Soobin shook his head with a sigh. The former then knocked his foot against the latter's shin. "Aye! You didn't even know it."
"Yeah, because I wasn't on that case," Soobin fired back. He finished off the rest of his bowl of cereal and set the empty ceramic in his lap before crossing his arms over his chest. His eyes, like his brothers' were lined beneath with heavy eye bags. Someone was supposed to be on patrol around the city right now, but neither of the three brothers were in any rush to get up. "So it's just one person going after these people then."
Yeonjun chewed his bottom lip. "Then we just gotta find the connection."
"Was the lawyer guy from a couple weeks ago Lee Sungjae's attorney?" Soobin asked.
Beomgyu grabbed a hold of the wireless keyboard on the desk and braced it upon his thighs. He pulled up an internet browser and typed in their inquiry. All three brothers made noises of disgruntlement; if the lawyer hadn't been Sungjae's attorney, then how were they connected? It was no secret that 99.9 percent of the population here in Gotham had some sort of… shadow looming over their shoulder. It was almost impossible to get anywhere without the help of a corrupt figure, whether that be a mob boss like the Penguin or loan shark with special strategies to get someone to pay up.
Either way, there would be lots of digging required.
"Let's start with Lee Sungjae and the lawyer's records,'' Soobin decided as he sat up in the chair. "We'll sort through phone records, acquire security footage of their movements, their texts, etcetera."
"I call none of those," Yeonjun said. When his younger brothers scowled at him, he raised both hands in feigned surrender with a giggle. "Fine, fine. You're both lookin' at me like I murdered your favorite puppy."
They remained silent.
"What, too soon?"
The basement headquarters suddenly erupted in a dull siren sound, and Beomgyu was swift to pull up a set of footage on one of the monitors. It displayed a section of the sky, a white spotlight circle cast against a massive, dark gray cumulus cloud with a distinct bat shape in the center—their call to action.
All three men were on their feet in an instant—keyboard and cereal bowl abandoned on the table, capes and utility belts clicked into place.
"Meet you losers there!" Yeonjun hollered as the cave filled with the revving roar of his motorcycle engine like a clap of thunder.
Soobin and Beomgyu hurried over to their respective cycles. "Hey, we're not done talking about Ln Yn!" Soobin called to his younger brother.
Beomgyu flashed him a thin smile. "That's what you think!" And he sped away down the runway.
Soobin chuckled to himself, grinning. Then he revved his engine and launched himself after his brothers.
Tumblr media
To be completely honest, you had no idea what you were doing. Actually, that was a lie. You kind of knew what you were doing, but that was leagues away from completely knowing what you were doing until it was muscle memory. Right now though, as you gripped onto the side of the building, fingertips digging into the concrete ledge like a lifeline (because it might as well had been one), you couldn't wait until it became muscle memory.
God, your arms were going to ache tomorrow morning.
"It's worth it, Yn," you muttered to yourself, under your breath, and that was what made you reach up one more time and grasp onto the ledge of the window sill. You had always wondered why buildings like this lacked security cameras, but based on its practically smooth facade, it was no wonder. Only a crazy person would dare scale something like this.
The law firm building was not one of the largest nor one of the dingiest. If it had been some place like Clark & Field, you would have considered other ways to get into the building, but it would probably be through the inside (because scaling a fifty story skyscraper without a net was not on your bucket list). And if the building had been on the dingier side, it would have, frankly, been much easier to find footholds and places to brace. Except for any mold or crumbly parts. That was not fun either.
Or maybe you could classify scaling buildings as just… not fun in general. But the skills and the strength would come with time.
This time, however, was fueled by pure willpower.
But the universe was on your side for once, and the window you clung to gave way and granted you entry. The stupid lock picks had actually worked.
Despite being dead for two weeks, Yang Eunhyuk’s office still looked like its owner was still alive. There were documents left out in the open, all of the furniture had yet to be touched, there was an old (upon further investigation, really old) cup of coffee on the desk, and a two-week-old calendar for the week’s appointments and cases. You peered at the calendar and skimmed its contents, but found nothing terribly noteworthy. You strolled by the bookcase, footsteps light as a cat’s, and glimpsed the titles. There were a lot of convoluted-sounding titles on the shelves, and honestly, you doubted that he even read half of the books there. They were probably just for show when clients came in.
After you had given yourself a tour of the space, you determined that no one had truly cared enough about this man to really clean up for him. The door out into the hallway was locked, and through its frosted glass door, you could make out the distinct yellow police tape crossed over the frame. This was no crime scene, but the police had still had the room locked down… odd.
You figured they didn’t care enough. But maybe this guy had more connections than you were giving him credit for. He had been one of your father’s clients, after all. (Actually, that wasn’t enough to determine whether or not Yang was smart or not. Resorting to your father’s ever-generous solutions was stupid; and you were very well-aware that that made you stupid, too.)
Your father had sent you to this office for something in particular.
“Yang Eunhyuk was an idiot and a half,” your father had told you the day you had come to him. “But he knows how to hide his things when he needs to.” He had carefully relayed all of the necessary information to you as the two of you sat on the couch together to outline your next steps and what exactly he was asking of you. “He owes me a compilation of files and a burner phone.”
When you’d asked what for, there was that gleam in his eyes as if he found the question amusing. “Well, to find out who betrayed us, of course.”
“To find who killed Mom?”
He had nodded at you—waved his hand flippantly. “Yes. That’s the same thing, Yn.”
A burner phone and a compilation of files. Your father had already searched Yang’s personal place of residence, but there had apparently been nothing but “shit." So here you were… sorting through more shit.
You drummed the pads of your fingers on the surface of the desk.
“Where would he hide you, hm?” You murmured to yourself. You tried all of the drawers under the desk—four of the seven came up locked. The top three drawers were all filled with a smorgasbord of knick knacks and junk like a fidget spinner, fidget cube, a package of cigarettes, and even a used gum wrapper. (Gross.) You slipped a lock pick out from your sleeve as you considered the remaining four locked drawers, then realized that Yang Eunhyuk might not have kept your father’s files in the same place as his regular, ol’ case files.
And so, you moved away from the desk.
You figured there were specific places a lawyer would keep their most sensitive files to ensure discretion and privacy. You recalled how your late employer, Lee Sungjae, often had his most precious files stashed away in a place that was so obvious that no one would ever assume any person in the right mind would hide such things. For Sungjae, it had been a picture frame on the wall of his office, the one with him and his entire family pictured. It was cute; but when one peered behind it…
There was only one picture frame in the entire office space. It was small and it housed his law degree. You wondered if it was phony.
You decided to give it a chance and reached for it with a gloved hand.
When you took the frame off the wall, a frown slipped onto your face at the solid wall behind it. Huh. It was worth a—
You stepped backward and inhaled sharply when your leg hit the back of his cheap office chair. You managed to right yourself, but your ears had also perked up at a curious sound. You swiftly replaced the frame on the wall and knelt down by the desk chair and twisted your body to peer beneath it.
The sound you had heard had been a soft swish. It was subtle and not at all loud, but thanks to the empty office and your own hearing, you had picked up on it. It was practically a miracle.
Your heart pounded in excitement as you stuck your hand beneath the chair and felt up the bottom. There—you felt a distinct, padded folder—and there—
Your fingers wrapped around a small device no bigger than the palm of your hand. It must have been attached to the bottom of the chair with some kind of tape, and you gave it a good yank. And behold… in your hand was the alleged burner phone, staring up at you, just begging for you to sneak a peek into its logs. But before you could, you removed the file that had been hidden beneath the chair as well. It was a standard manila folder stuffed to the brim with papers and, you assumed, lots of sensitive information. Your eyes were widening like your smile as you just struck gold.
Not too bad for your first time in a while.
You startled at the sound of a thump.
There was a figure, a shadow, standing on the window sill by the end of the desk. He was familiar to you with his dark hair and domino mask, and his red and black uniform. His cape flowed from just off the precipices of his shoulders and hung around the backs of his knees—imposing and regal but not in the way of any movements he made. The Red Robin had stood before you just earlier in the day at Lee Sungjae’s suburban home. He had been the one with the familiar presence to you, along with his… colleague? You didn’t know his and Nightwing’s association or relationship, but you weren’t about to interact long enough to find out.
“Breaking and entering is illegal, y’know,” the masked vigilante mused, and you could just make out the shadow of his smirk in the darkness. “Even at crime scenes.”
You rose from your spot on the floor, slipping the burner into the holster pocket on the garter around your thigh and tucking the file in the crook of your arm. There wasn’t really a place you could hide the chunky piece of shit. Despite your heart palpitating in your chest, you maintained a cool exterior. He didn’t know who you were, and you expected that he wouldn’t be able to recognize your voice since you had only spoken to him once.
“Nothing done in Gotham is illegal,” you replied to him.
His head cocked to the side, arms folding over his chest. “You’re not wrong about that. But…” He nodded at the file folder. “I really can’t let you leave with that.”
Oh, dear god. You needed an escape plan—and fast.
Nothing was coming to mind; it was just get out get out get out! (Very helpful, as always.)
“I’m sure you can make an exception for me,” you said with a mocking pout. “How’d you even know I was here? I didn’t realize Yang Eunhyuk had a connection to Gotham’s exclusive Bat Boys.”
A scoff from him. “He doesn’t. Your luck just happened to be running out, sweetheart.” He stepped off the window sill and entered the office, stalking toward you with slow, methodical steps because he knew you were cornered. You really should have tried that office door when you had the chance.
As you began backing away, you shook his head and tsked. “C’mon,” he coaxed. “Give me the folder.”
“And I can go?” You wondered how fast you could disappear once you flung yourself out of that window.
He smiled. “If you give me that burner, too, sure.”
Your heart stopped for a millisecond. God damn it.
He must have seen the doubt in your eyes, and that fucking smile of his widened. Something about that was tug-tug-tugging a nerve. He stopped walking toward you as you slowly made a move to set the file down on the floor. “Good girl.”
The file flopped onto the wooden floor.
"Slowly," he drawled, eyes glued to your form as he watched your hand move toward the holster pouch.
All the while, you were counting down in your head.
Before he could blink, you swung a leg out and kicked the file back behind Red Robin and toward the window. His head swerved in that direction, and you launched yourself at him before he could realize his mistake.
You kicked at him, one-two, adrenaline pumping through your veins like a virus. He blocked your blows, just as you swung around and made a grab for his mask.
He caught your wrist; you whirled—it was a high stakes tango you had not been prepared for. But you jabbed your elbow behind you, fist flying up toward his nose. Every move you made was desperate and offensive.
You slipped free and ducked, body curling under his arm, under his cape, until you ended up in the flurry of the dark fabric.
The vigilante knew his own cape though. You gave him that much.
He grabbed the opposite end and arced it over your head, arm coming down to wrap you in it—but you threw yourself out of it, landing a swift blow to his shin. Wouldn't do much except make him curse and loosen his grip slightly.
The file was in sight—oh god, it was right the fuck there.
You made a mad dash for it, leaning down slightly and reaching out with your hand—
"Not so fast, kitty—"
You hit the floor with a curse, palms flat against the wood. His foot had hooked around yours and tripped you, his knee set against your back like his own palm as he held you against the floor.
You felt his breath by your ear. "What's in the file, sweetheart?"
"None of your concern," you gritted out, then throwing your head back until you heard and felt that telltale "fuck!" from Red Robin.
You ignored the throbbing in the back of your skull to fling yourself around and throw off his balance again. Your hand dove into your holster pocket to retrieve the small cylinder of mace, then sprayed it in a final move of desperation, breath and chest heaving.
The man sputtered, hand flying up to his mouth as he stumbled backward and tried to eject the chemical from his body. "Dirty fucking move," he spat as you turned tail and made for the file.
Only—
"Looking for this?"
Two others had joined the party, to your absolute horror. Nightwing stood with the file in his hand, while Red Hood—the vigilante from the bank, and supposedly Choi Yeonjun based on your deductions—was perched up on the window sill with zero care in the world.
Well shit.

KINDRED — profile 1
It’s your final year of highschool, and your only goal is to graduate top of your cohort, as usual. Except as student council president, your advisor can’t seem to leave you alone. What happens when you take Decelis Academy’s top student, their star athlete and put them in front of a camera?
❥・• yn homework club
note: they are all 19 years of age except for ni-ki (17)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Park Y/N, Decelis Academy’s top student and President of the Student Council. You have never once lost the number 1 spot throughout your time at the academy and the faculty absolutely adores you. Nothing is more important to you than excelling in your academics, as your dear mother have told you multiple times that people only remember you when you’re at the top of the pyramid. Despite your name being well known and talked about among the student body, you often keep to yourself and the exception of your inner circle. Thinking with your head rather than your heart, you have a hard time empathising with people, which explains your relatively small friendship circle. Have the most insignificant beef with Yang Jungwon, which you instigated by the way, but you’d never admit that.
Tumblr media
Huh Yunjin, president of Decelis Academy’s theatre club and most probably the closest person to a BFF to you. Imagine Regina George but minus the unhingeness, that’s Yunjin. Despite her popularity, she’s actually a really sweet angel and would 100% drop whatever she’s doing for you. You first met in freshman year and is inseparable ever since. Her personality type enables her to empathise with you more so than others and you appreciate her for that.
Tumblr media
Chanelle Moon, executive commitee member of the Decelis Student Council. For her, you’d imagine Janis but minus the black gothy aesthetics. Probably the most unbothered and coolest person you know (provided you don’t know much people anyways). Similar to Yunjin, she’s your ride or die and you can always count on her to literally hiss at the girls who would pick on you in the library.
Tumblr media
Shin Ryujin, president of Y/N’s fanclub. Would literally sell her soul to hold your hand. Came to know her through Yunjin. You used to find it weird that she would openly simp for you but now you’re just used to the unhinged shit that comes out of her mouth. Despite her undying devotion, she respects your boundaries. You call Ryujin, Yunjin, and Chanelle the powerpuff girls because of how protective they are of you.
Tumblr media
Choi Beomgyu, member of Decelis Academy’s media club and your unofficial hype boy. You got to know him after he came to the council room looking for Taehyun. The two of you clicked immediately. You were aware of your ‘poor’ interpersonal skills and he was like your personal trainer, he’d call you out for being too straightforward or that you should smile more when addressing the student body. Without even noticing, you’d go to him for advice and he’s always more than happy to help (well in exchange for your chemistry notes and answers of course).
Tumblr media
Nishimura Riki, member of Decelis Academy’s dance club. The only member in your small clique that’s currently in their Sophomore year. Despite the age difference between him and the rest of your group, he somehow managed to wiggle his way into your inner circle even though most people would just outright ignore you. The aura and pressure of being friends with the top student wasn’t the most appealing. At dance practice is where he first met Heeseung, Jay, and Jake before subsequently meeting Sunoo, Sunghoon, and Yang Jungwon.
Tumblr media
Kim Gyuvin, member of Decelis Academy’s media club. He used to find you scarily intimidating but that was before he actually got to know and work with you during school events. Gyuvin is like the brother you never knew you had. You also find him pretty funny, though most of the time you end up laughing at him laughing rather than the joke he tells. Oh, he also has a super ugly dog, and you never fail to tell him that.

DUET - audition day (chapter 1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The vibe at Decelis University’s dance studio was buzzing with that special kind of electric tension that only comes before a major audition. The regional dance competition was looming, and today was the big day to see who would snag the solos and duet spots. The studio was alive with dancers who had been pouring their souls into practice.
You were near the mirrors, adjusting your dance shoes, surrounded by your comforting and familiar friends.
“Hey Hoonie, can you pass me my water bottle?” you called out while stretching your legs.
Sunghoon, ever the attentive one, handed it over with a small smile. “Here you go. Ready to crush it?”
“Born ready,” you replied confidently, winking at him. “How about you?”
“Always,” he said, eyes twinkling with mischief.
“Don’t forget to breathe out there,” Chaeryeong teased, poking you in the ribs. “You’re gonna need all the oxygen you can get.”
You laughed, swatting her hand away. “Thanks, Chae. Like I needed the reminder.”
Kim Gaeul, bouncing over with her endless energy, chimed in, “Come on, everyone! Group stretch! We need to be limber and ready to go.”
As you all began your stretching routine, Sunoo joined in, his dramatic flair evident even in his warm-ups. “I’m telling you, if my solo doesn’t make the cut, I’m staging a freaking protest.”
“Oh please, Sunoo,” Jeongyeon laughed. “You say that every time. Just dance your best and stop being so dramatic.”
“Never,” Sunoo declared with a flourish, making everyone laugh.
You noticed your younger brother, Riki, nervously fidgeting with his dance shoes in a corner. Concerned, you excused yourself from the group and walked over to him.
“Hey, little bro,” you said softly, sitting down beside him. “You doing okay?”
Riki looked up, trying to hide his anxiety with a brave smile. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just… you know, a bit nervous.”
You smiled warmly, ruffling his hair. “It’s normal to be nervous, Riki-kun. Just remember, you’ve practiced hard for this. You’re gonna do great.”
Riki pouted, swatting your hand away. “Stop treating me like a kid, onēchan. I’ve grown up, you know.”
“Yeah, yeah, Mr. Grown-Up,” you teased, poking him in the side. “But you’ll always be my little brother, no matter how old you get.”
He laughed, his nerves easing a bit. “You’re so annoying, you know that?”
You grinned. “I know. But seriously, just dance like you always do. You’ve got this. You’re amazing.”
“Thanks,” he said, a genuine smile breaking through. “Good luck to you too.”
“You too, little bro,” you replied, giving him a quick hug before standing up. “Now, let’s show them what the Nishimura siblings are made of.”
As you returned to your friends, Riki took a deep breath, feeling ready to face the audition.
The door to the studio swung open, and the atmosphere shifted instantly. Jay and his friends walked in, and the room grew quieter, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.
Jay, exuding confidence, glanced around before locking eyes with you. “Ready to lose, Nishimura?” he smirked.
You rolled your eyes, suppressing the annoyance rising within you. “In your dreams, Park. I’ll make sure you eat your words.”
You and Jay had always hated each other. No one really knew why, but ever since you two met, it was like oil and water. Constant clashes, endless bickering, and no love lost.
Sunghoon, always protective, stepped closer to you. “Ignore him, Yn. Just focus on your audition.”
Jay’s friend, Jake, with his playful puppy-like demeanor, clapped Jay on the back. “Let’s see that solo of yours blow everyone away, Jay.”
“Piece of cake,” Jay replied confidently, shooting you a challenging look.
Lee Heeseung, shy but thoughtful, observed the scene quietly, while Yang Jungwon, ever the mediator, tried to lighten the mood. “Let’s all just do our best. No need for unnecessary drama.”
Mischievous and loud Shin Yuna added her flair to the mix. “Oh, but where’s the fun in that, wonnie? A little rivalry never hurt anyone.”
As the two groups sized each other up, you couldn’t help but feel the competitive fire burn brighter within you. You exchanged a glance with Chaeryeong, who gave you an encouraging nod.
“We’ve got this, boo,” Chaeryeong whispered. “Just dance like you always do.”
Gaeul, ever the cheerleader, piped up, “Yeah, Yn! Show them what you’ve got!”
Yuna’s friend Ning Yizhuo whispered something to Yuna, making them both giggle. You noticed but chose to ignore them, focusing instead on your warm-ups. Just before Jay’s group made their way to the other side of the studio, Jungwon patted your shoulder.
Jungwon was the only one in their group who was genuinely nice. “Good luck out there, you’re gonna kill it,” he said, with a big smile.
“Thanks, Won. You too,” you smiled back at him before he joined his friends.
The dance instructor, Lee Bada, stepped into the center of the room, her presence commanding immediate attention. “Alright, everyone. Today, we’ll determine our soloists and the duet for the regionals. Each of you will perform a solo, and the best male and female solos will be selected. The second best will form our duet.”
Hyunjin, the co-captain, added with a smirk, “Give it your all. We’re not holding back.”
The auditions began, each dancer giving their heart and soul to their performance. The tension in the room grew with each passing performance, the competitive atmosphere thick enough to cut with a knife.
It was finally your turn. You stepped into the center of the room, taking a deep breath to steady your nerves. The music started, and you let the rhythm take over. Your movements were precise and powerful. You poured your emotions into the performance.
As you finished, the room erupted in applause, your friends cheering loudly. Even Jay had to admit, begrudgingly, that your solo was impressive.
“Not bad, Nishimura,” he said, trying to hide his admiration.
“Save your compliments for someone who cares,” you shot back, though your cheeks flushed with pride.
Next up was Jay. He sauntered to the center, exuding confidence. The music began, and he launched into a dynamic routine, his movements powerful and controlled. Every leap, every spin was executed with precision. He was a force to be reckoned with, and you couldn’t help but watch in awe, even as you hated to admit it.
When he finished, the applause was thunderous. His friends whooped and cheered, clearly proud of their leader.
“Top that,” Jay said, flashing a victorious grin at you.
“Don’t get too cocky, Park,” Sunghoon interjected, glaring at Jay.
The auditions continued, with each dancer giving their all. Sunghoon’s performance was cool and composed, his shy nature melting away as he moved. Chaeryeong’s dance was sassy and full of energy, while Riki showcased his talent with a playful yet precise routine.
Finally, the auditions were over. The dancers gathered, sweaty and exhausted but satisfied with their efforts. Lee Bada and Hyunjin exchanged glances, clearly impressed with the talent on display.
“We’ll announce the results tomorrow,” Bada said, her voice calm but firm. “Great work, everyone. Rest up and be ready for practice.”
As the dancers filed out of the studio, the tension between you and Jay remained. You both knew you had given your best, and now all you could do was wait.
“You were amazing, Yn,” Sunghoon said softly as you walked out.
“Thanks, Hoonie. You too,” you replied, smiling at your friend. “Let’s hope we both make it.”

Tumblr media
Looking around the crowded cafeteria to find your best friend shouldn't be this difficult, Riki Nishimura is about 7 feet tall you could find him anywhere, just not right now apparently. You and Riki have a daily routine: you meet by the old music classroom at lunch that looks over the courtyard where most of the freshmen are greeted by the stern-faced principal yelling at them for being on the grass. Unfortunately, you stood by that room for 10 minutes waiting for him only to walk towards the high school cafeteria upset. It wasn’t uncommon for Riki to eat lunch with his other friends, but he would always tell you when he would. Finally spotting his upper-class friends you still don't see Riki until you feel a large figure behind you. ‘’ what are you doing?’’ he said with a smirk. ''Jesus Christ I was about to kick you in the shins!’’ you say squaring up at Riki. ''where were you?’’ you add to which he leaves your question unanswered he just simply looks at you confused ''Where was I?? Where were you?’’ he said putting to much emphasis on his 'I' , poor boy didn't know his teasing would only cause you to start biting him out ''Seriously Riki I waited for you by the music room for like 15 minutes!’’ you say bringing your hands up to count but he stops you before you can finish ''Ok fine I wasn’t at the music room…I was watching Rei’’ ''ew perv’’ you said teasing ''It's not like that I swear!’’ your tall friend said defensively ‘’Mr. Park made her carry a whole bunch of shit up to the top floor and I just wanted to make sure she didn’t fall’’ you couldn't help but roll your eyes at his statement ''you could have also helped her you know ?’’ you said which made Riki practically laugh ''and get in the crossfire of Mr. Park? Fuck no!’’
This wasn't a new thing for you to be the 'third wheel’ between Riki and Rei, he’s been head over heels in love with her since you guys started high school, and to act like it didn’t crush you to see him like her, you deserve an oscar. However your very good friend Riki was an absolute dud is an understatement, for three years he's talked to her at least 7 times, he was a lost cause until he asked you ''y/n do you think you can help me talk to her?’’ he said quiet enough for only you to hear ''WHAT!’’ you say spitting out your water. The two of you were walking back to the music room until you stopped walking just to stare up at him. ''You want me to what!?’’ you whisper-scream at him ''I said help me talk to Rei, you have way more experience in this field and i trust you’’ he said dragging out the word ‘way’ You kept staring at him not answering his question leading him to add to this already strange situation, ''please y/n i will never ask for anything else EVER AGAIN!’’ Riki said pleading ''Now that i don’t believe it, why do you want me to help you I don't know Rei?’’ you say hoping he’ll realize how strange this request is and drop it, but to your dismay, he continues ''yeah yeah you don't know rei but you're in the same science class as her.’’ ''you want me to stalk her? Do you want me to go up to her and ask her what her favorite element is?’’ you hear Riki let out a laugh. ''No but will you help me at least talk to her?’’ he said, his laugh dying down, ''You want me to help you get confidence? Ki, I'm not sure I can do that!’’ you said patting him on his shoulder only for him to shrug you off ''you know what I mean y/n please’’ he said turning to look you in the eyes, any thought that you have of getting out of this situation left your mind the second you saw his eyes, this is not going to end well and you knew it but you can’t say no to him ''fine’’ and with that, Riki did a victory dance and excitedly hugged you.
Lunch period ended and you headed to your class which just so happens to be science. You had an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other fighting over which way you deal with this situation you could help your best friend be with the girl he’s been pining after for what feels like centuries, or you could use all of your and Riki’s savings and move to Ireland and leave Riki in his sad sad life without you. You felt your phone buzz in your pocket as you sat down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary After being best friends with Riki Nishimura for what seems like your entire life, you two have a close bond one that many are jealous of. So when one day he asked you to help him talk to his long time crush, you couldn’t tell him no and risk the truth of your own feelings for him to spill. Could Riki be chasing after the wrong girl? Can you keep your secret hidden? Will Sunghoon ever get his hot chocolate?

Tumblr media
You let out sigh of relief as you drop into your usual seat at the lunch table. You do a mental head count of who is already there as you take your lunch out of your book bag.
Yuna, Chaeryeong, Jay, Jungwon, Heeseung, and-.
You.
I don’t know you.
And it must show on your face that you don’t know this person because Jay elbows you in the side before whispering, “you’re staring.”
You jolt out of your daze and continue to unpack your lunch, greeting your other friends with smiles. Heeseung speaks up first.
He clears his throat. “Guys, this is Sunoo. He just moved here and he’s in my history class. Everyone be nice to him.”
Yuna scoffs. “Be nice? When have you ever known me to not be nice?”
“You pushed me down the stairs last week,” Jay counters.
“You posted that video of me dancing in my sleep after I asked you not to,” Jungwon adds.
“Literally this morning you forgot my name and called me Heechul,” Heeseung pouts.
“You all are so ungrateful,” Yuna interjects. “You know what I call that? Friendship. People would kill to have a friendship like that with me.”
“If they’re willing to kill to be friends with you, then maybe you deserve them,” Chaeryeong mumbles. Yuna’s jaw drops open.
You decide to step in before things start to escalate. “Hi Sunoo, I’m Y/N, and I promise we’re not always this crazy,” you say. His eyes sparkle, and he giggles.
“Okay, nice to meet you, Y/N.” You nod.
“Likewise.” Off to the side, Heeseung smirks at Sunoo. Sunoo just blushes and looks down at his food.
***
You sip from your water bottle lazily as you sit to the side and watch your friends’ dance practice. They’re joined by newcomer Sunoo, who is surprisingly very flexible. He picks up the moves quickly and seems to fit right into your friend group. You tell him such when he sits down next to you during their water break.
He bears a big grin after you do. His ears turn red as he mumbles out a thank you. You smile back at him, happy to have made him happy with your compliment.
“Do you dance?” He asks, changing the topic.
You sigh. “Yes and no? It’s sorta complicated.” You chuckle to try and ease the tension.
“Yes and no?,” he repeats. His eyes are genuine and wide, curiosity evident in them. He seems like he really wants to know. So you tell him.
“I used to. A lot, actually. In middle school and during my freshman year. Then when sophomore year hit, a family member of mine had a big health scare. They haven’t really…been the same ever since. I stopped dancing to make time to take care of them, and I sorta lost confidence in myself.” You begin to fiddle with your shoelaces, feeling suddenly very shy. “Everyone else improved so much while I was gone, I figured I could never catch up. So, I just quit.” You let out a long breath after you finished. You didn’t realize just how much you had been holding in. You chance a glance at Sunoo, and he looks understanding. Not pitious, but genuinely understanding. He nods solemnly.
“I’m sorry you went through that. I don’t mean to invalidate your experience, but I can kinda understand what you went through. I, myself, have always had some problems with my health.” He picks at his nails before continuing, his voice small. “In fact, right before I moved here I had to have major surgery. I couldn’t dance for a couple months afterwards. Going back was really scary, especially when I knew that it wasn’t guaranteed that I’d be completely healthy afterwards. Even still, I have to take a lot of breaks when I dance, but I try to not let fear stop me from doing what I love.” Your heart tightens, and you realize that the boy in front of you is more than just sunshine and giggles. He’s a person, with true problems. How he chooses to face them, though, is what makes him different from most.
“I’ve actually…never told anyone that since moving out here. I don’t want anyone to look at me any differently,” he continues with a sour smile on his face. You reach out and put a hand on his shoulder. He looks at it worriedly before looking at you. You smile at him as gently as you can.
“I don’t see you any differently than who you are, and I’m sure that no one else will either, if you decide to tell them.” His smile turns sweet, into the one you’re more used to seeing on him.
“I’ve never told anyone about my family member before either. I didn’t want them to worry.” You eye your friends when you say this, calming down when you see them still laughing together on the other side of the room. “I just told them I felt like it wasn’t time for me to rejoin the team, and while they don’t know everything that’s going on, I think they understand. That’s just the kind of people they are. They’ll care for you, no matter what you tell or do for them in return.” You turn back to Sunoo, who’s already looking at you, a thoughtful smile on his face. You try to match his look, but Yuna calls him back before you can.
“Hey, Sir Smiles-a-Lot, let’s get back to work.” His eyes widen in surprise, and he scrambles up to get back in formation. He arrives in his spot next to Jungwon, who pokes him with his elbow and whispers something in Sunoo’s ear. Sunoo pushes Jungwon off with an embarrassed grin on his face, shaking his head. You chuckle at their antics.
***
Riki is an idiot. You have to refrain yourself from telling him such as you stay behind in the chemistry classroom, finishing the lab that he was joking so much during that the two of you didn’t finish your experiment. You grumble under your breath once you finish, packing your stuff and all but sprinting away from him. You spare a glance behind you at him, and he looks completely unbothered, hands in his pockets as he whistles down the hallway. You roll your eyes.
When you reach the cafeteria doors you slow down, smoothing over your outfit before calmly walking in. You spot your friends across the room and wave, but they don’t notice you. Instead, they’re leaned in towards Sunoo, whose face is sheepish as he talks. He’s fighting a smile, while everyone else bears smirks. Their conversation becomes clearer as you get closer.
“I dunno, she just makes me happy. But please, don’t tell her. I’m not ready,” you hear from Sunoo.
You calmly take your usual seat across from Sunoo, pulling your lunch out of your backpack. Usually, Jay fills you in on what you missed when you arrive late to a conversation, so the fact that he’s oddly quiet right now is kind of concerning. (It’s one of the things you like about him.) That, and the fact that he usually can’t stay quiet for longer than a minute. (Something else you like about him.) No one speaks up, so you assume the conversation wasn’t meant for you to hear. You can’t say it doesn’t hurt, but you decide to respect their privacy.
The silence is killing me, though. Thankfully, someone walks into the cafeteria right at that moment.
“Hey, Jay; Wonyoung, 12 o’ clock,” you say as you notice Jay’s crush walk through the doors of the cafeteria. Everyone turns around to look at her. You are disappointed that you can’t deny that she’s beautiful. No one can.
Her long beachy waves flow behind her and her frame is toned and skinny. Her eyes are big and bright. She’s gorgeous. She’s everything Jay deserves.
“Who are we kidding? Jay can’t pull her,” Heeseung snorts. Sunoo furrows his eyebrows as he watches her sit at a table with her friends. Jay glares at Heeseung.
“I can and I will. Just you wait. A girl like her deserves a strong, awesome man like me,” he says with a confident, almost cocky smile. You pick at your lunch after that, suddenly not feeling as hungry. Sunoo notices. He grabs your right hand with his left and when your attention turns towards him, his eyes ask you if you’re okay. You nod and press your lips into a smile. You pray he doesn’t notice your eyes tearing up.
To your luck, he doesn’t, and nods back at you before returning to his food, but leaving his hand on yours. It trembles slightly, but comforts you nonetheless.
***
The lights are fluorescent in Sunoo’s bathroom. He’s perched on a stool in front of you. Next to you, Jay reads the instructions for the hair dye.
“Apply generously to the hair, then leave to set for 2 minutes. Rinse hair thoroughly with water and let air dry,” Jay relays. You nod your head before meeting Sunoo’s eyes in the mirror. He smiles at you. You wink at him. Jay watches.
“Okay…” he interrupts, his face in a grimace. “Let’s do this thing.” Sunoo quickly brushes his hair before shaking it out. You and Jay put on the plastic gloves included in the boxes of dye. You squeeze a sizable amount of the dye onto your hands, throwing a mischievous grin at the two boys as you do. You rub your hands together, hovering them over Sunoo’s head. You meet his eyes in the mirror once again.
“You ready?” you ask.
He swallows. Then nods. “Mhm.”
You press your hands onto his head, then start combing your fingers through it. Sunoo shivers once, then twice. You pause. ‘You good?,’ you ask with your eyes. He nods. You continue.
You and Jay stand on opposite sides of his head, combing the dye through Sunoo’s hair. He closes his eyes and hums in content. Music plays quietly from Jay’s phone, because according to him, it was “too quiet in here”.
You bop your head along lightly to the music as you work, before you feel a slight sense. You furrow your eyebrows and turn to the mirror to find Sunoo watching you with a slight smile on his face. He doesn’t turn away when you catch him, either. You shake your head with a smile and return to your work.
A couple of minutes later, you’re finishing up the last section of Sunoo’s hair when the doorbell rings.
“That’s probably Heeseung with the food. I’m done my side, I’ll go get it,” Jay says, taking off his gloves. He leaves the room to answer the door, leaving you and Sunoo in the bathroom.
You break the silence first. “So, why pink?,” you ask. Sunoo chuckles.
“I don’t really know. Just because?” He answers. “My mom always called me ‘her peach’, maybe that inspired it.” You stick out your bottom lip with a small laugh.
“You know what? I do see it, though!” You both laugh. It goes silent again. Sunoo has his lips pressed together. He looks to be deep in thought.
“Y/N, I need to tell you somethi-“ he starts.
“Can I see it?” Heeseung shouts, bursting into the bathroom. He gasps at Sunoo’s new hair, even though it hasn’t been rinsed yet. “It’s pink, I love it.” Sunoo laughs, although it sounds slightly forced.
“Is everyone else here yet?,” you ask. Heeseung nods.
“Yeah, they’re unpacking the food in the kitchen.” You drop your mouth open in faux shock.
“Make sure Jungwon doesn’t eat all the Hawaiian pizza! I know how he gets.” Heeseung laughs as he walks out the bathroom.
“Will do,” he throws back as he leaves.
You clap your hands together, finished with Sunoo’s hair. “All done!” He grins and claps his hands together, and you can’t deny it’s adorable. His eyes squint together and his cheeks puff out. You decide against poking them, but that doesn’t mean you didn’t want to.
“Ready to rinse?,” you ask, and he nods enthusiastically. You lead him over to his tub and turn on the water while he kneels down. Once it’s warm, you guide his head under and begin rinsing out the excess dye. You comb your fingers through his strands and scratch his scalp lightly.
“Oh my god,” he mumbles. You chuckle.
“Feels nice?,” you ask.
“You have no idea,” he replies. “Especially because it’s you,” he adds softly.
You hesitate. “What does that mean?,” you ask with a small laugh.
“Everything.” He doesn’t continue, and you don’t press further. You turn off the water and Sunoo shakes out his hair. You laugh as droplets land on you, and shove him lightly. He smiles teasingly and takes the towel from your hands, drying his hair with it before resting it over his shoulders. He walks over to the mirror, checking out his new hair color. You put your hands on your hips beside him.
“So, what do you think?”
“I love it,” he says, and the smile on his face is huge as he does. He wraps you in a hug and squeezes tightly.
“Thank you,” he mumbles into your neck. You hesitate, surprised, before responding and wrapping your arms back around him.
“Of course,” you reply, scratching the back of his head. He hums, and the two of you stay that way for a while.
Until Chaeryeong clears her throat.
You pull apart, turning to see her standing in the doorway, an awkward look on her face. “Uh, I was just wondering if you knew how to open the umbrella on your patio table,” she spoke out hesitantly, pointing weakly at Sunoo. “We’re about to head outside.”
Sunoo stands there facing her, oddly stiff for a second, and you can’t see the look on his face, but Chaeryeong sends him an apologetic one back. “Uh, yeah. Yeah, I’m coming,” he says, finally.
“Okay, cool,” she sighs, pressing her back to the side of the doorway, letting him pass in front of her. She coughs awkwardly again before following him, and you wash your hands quickly before meeting everyone outside. You grab your slice of pizza and a soda can and bring it outside with you. Sunoo is tightening the umbrella into place, and everyone is talking and laughing with each other. Yuna listens intently as Jay tells a story, and Jungwon and Heeseung are joking with each other until Jungwon notices Chaeryeong’s presence. He waves her over with a smile, and she skips over to where he’s sitting. He wraps an arm around her waist before continuing to talk to Heeseung.
You smile fondly. You love your friends, and it brings you joy to see them happy and enjoying themselves like this. Sunoo comes over to stand next to you.
“What are you thinking?,” he asks. You turn to him and smile.
“I just love you guys,” you beam, before taking a seat at the table. You didn’t notice Sunoo’s hand slightly outstretched to try and brush with yours.
Nor do you hear him whisper, “if only you knew” before sitting down and taking the seat next to you.
***
It’s cold in Jay’s basement. You ask him several times if you guys can move to his much warmer living room, but he refuses. ‘The vibes are better down here,’ he says, although you don’t see how a dartboard and one wall of LED lights give a room “better vibes”.
You rub your hands up and down your arms for what feels like the 20th time when you feel something drop onto your shoulders. You look up to see Sunoo walking back to his seat on the loveseat across the room before pulling the mystery item off your shoulders. A white hoodie. The same white hoodie Sunoo arrived wearing. You send him a grateful smile as you slip your arms through the sleeves. He nods bashfully back at you.
Heeseung claps his hands together, effectively grabbing everyone’s attention. “Alright losers, who wants to play truth or dare?”
“Me,” Jungwon answers without hesitation, sitting up in his seat. Chaeryeong watches how Jungwon reacts and replies in a similar way to him, tucking her legs under herself and agreeing to the game. Jay shrugs.
“Actually, not really. I always get picked to do the worst dares,” Yuna replies glumly. Heeseung rolls his eyes before whispering something in her ear, and her eyes light up before she speaks again.
“But on second thought, I think today will be my lucky day.”
You see Sunoo look at you, trying to gage how you’ll respond. You pull his hoodie tighter around you before agreeing. He nods his head after you respond.
“Okay good. Let’s start with Jay. Jay, truth or dare?”
“Truth.”
“Lame,” Jungwon shouts. Yuna and Sunoo chuckle. Jay rolls his eyes.
“Okay…what’s your favorite thing about me?” Heeseung asks. Jay ponders for a while, his head dropping in thought. He lifts it up again when he comes up with an answer.
“How you always manage to make everyone laugh. It just comes so naturally to you, and I’ve honestly always been a bit jealous of that,” Jay speaks quietly, admitting something really personal to him. Heeseung nods slowly before also shouting out “lame!” Everyone in the room bursts into laughter, and Jay rolls his eyes, but he’s laughing too. “Alright, Jay, you ask next.” Jay looks around the room before choosing his next victim.
“Yuna.” Her face drops as she hears her name called. She tucks her hair behind her ear as Jay asks the question. “Truth or dare?”
“Dare,” she replies confidently. Jay smiles evilly.
“Speak in your Hussey accent until your next turn.” Yuna freezes.
“Don’t do this, Jay, I thought we agreed to forget about Hussey-,” she pleads.
“Ah, does that sound like Hussey to you? Cause it sure doesn’t to me.” Everyone laughs as Yuna rolls her eyes. You take advantage of the commotion to walk over to Sunoo, and he scoots over in anticipation of you. However, he’s already sharing the seat with Jungwon, so your legs are pressed against each other’s when you sit. Sunoo’s face is red, but he was laughing pretty hard at Yuna’s misfortune and continues to act like normal so you choose to ignore it.
“You’re gonna enjoy this. Hussey is what we call Yuna’s god-awful southern accent,” you lean in to tell Sunoo. He laughs even harder at this, clapping his hands and doubling over. Yuna clears her throat before speaking.
“I wayn’t furgut thus, Jayuh Pahk,” Yuna stumbles out, glaring at Jay as he falls over laughing. Sunoo and I fall into each other as we laugh at her horrible accent.
Once everyone manages to calm down (which takes way longer than it should), it’s Yuna’s turn to ask.
“Chaeryeong, truth or dare?” Chaeryeong seems unworried as she makes her choice.
“Truth.” ‘Fatal mistake, Chaeryeong,’ you think.
“Is ayt true you got a crursh on Jungwon?” Yuna asks, keeping up with her accent. Chaeryeong’s eyes shoot open. Jungwon sits up straight at the mention of his name. His eyebrows are raised as he looks at Chaeryeong expectantly. Chaeryeong waves her hands out in front of her as her face turns red, stuttering out ‘no’ in almost any way she can. She’s completely lying, of course.
Jay and Heeseung laugh at how flustered Chaeryeong becomes. Jungwon’s eyebrows drop back down.
“So you don’t like me?,” he tries to clarify.
“Uh, no. No no no.” She laughs awkwardly as she tucks her hair behind her ear and covers her mouth with her hand. Jungwon nods before turning away, and the second he does Chaeryeong sends Yuna the nastiest glare you’ve ever seen. Yuna completely ignores it.
“Hm, alrighty then. Chaeryeong, yur turn.” Chaeryeong lets out a sigh before looking around the room, ready to pass the embarrassment she just felt onto someone else.
“Sunoo.” You feel him stiffen beside you, and you pat his leg to comfort him. “Truth or dare?”
“Truth?,” he asks warily. Chaeryeong pretends to think, tapping her chin with her finger. She snaps when she “comes up” with an answer.
“Is it true you think Y/N is really pretty?” Everyone’s jaw drops except for yours. You’re confused. Why you?
“Uh…” he starts. Chaeryeong cuts him off.
“Cause you were telling us the other day you thought she had crystals for eyes. You know, after the hour long rant about her smile-“
“YES, yes I think she’s pretty. We can move on now, right?,” he shouts through gritted teeth. Chaeryeong smiles proudly.
You nudge Sunoo. “Thanks, bud. You’re not too bad looking yourself.” Beside him, Jungwon cringes.
He chuckles awkwardly before shaking his head. “Ok, uh, Y/N, truth or dare?” You suck in a breath before answering. “Dare.”
“Alright, uh, hop on one-,” he stops when Heeseung abruptly jumps out of his seat to whisper something into Sunoo’s ear. ‘A lot of whispering seems to be happening lately,’ you muse.
Sunoo shakes his head fervently at whatever Heeseung says, and Heeseung rolls his eyes before whispering again. Sunoo sighs, and glances at you before looking down at his shoes.
“I dare you to hold hands with the most attractive person in the room,” he mumbles. He then looks up at you, almost hopefully, but his face drops when you stand up. You trudge across the room to where Jay is sitting on the floor and plop down next to him before grabbing his hand and putting it in yours.
“Don’t get any ideas, Park, I’m just being objective here,” you mumble, hoping your attempt at neutrality deters the group from realizing your true feelings for Jay.
“But I have so many ideas right now,” he blurts out. You facepalm into your free hand.
The room is silent, and you lift your head again to find everyone staring at you and Jay, shocked. Except for Sunoo, who has a look on his face you can’t quite read. You furrow your eyebrows in confusion.
Chaeryeong clears her throat and Heeseung squirms in his seat. Jungwon licks his lips before announcing that he doesn’t want to play anymore. Chaeryeong agrees, suggesting we watch a movie instead. Sunoo sits silently before getting up, mumbling a small “bathroom” as he speedwalks out of the frigid basement. Heeseung drops his head.
“You guys think he’s ok?” you ask, going back to your original seat on the couch.
“No, you dimwit, you just broke his heart,” Jungwon sighs, leaning back in his seat and rolling his eyes.
“What?” you exclaim, looking at everyone else for clarification, but they all have the same pitious and disappointed looks on their faces.
“Are you blind?” Yuna shouts. “He’s been, like, in love with you since he met you.” Off to the side, Chaeryeong nods.
“This is all my fault,” Heeseung says to no one in particular. His head is in his hands and he speaks with disbelief. “I thought this would work, I-I’m such an idiot.”
Your words are caught in your throat. You have to say it. You blurt it out before anyone can stop you-
“I like Jay.” Once again, all eyes are on you.
“WHAT?” Jungwon screams.
You repeat yourself. “I-I like Jay. I have for, like, a year now.” You spare a look at him, and his face is scrunched into a mixture of surprise and disgust. Ouch.
“But I like Wonyoung,” he replies.
“Dude, you’re never going to end up with Wonyoung, get over it,” Heeseung sighs.
“I know! I know, but I had to reject Y/N somehow.”
“Ouch,” you sigh, voicing your feelings this time. His face turns apologetic.
“I’m sorry, it’s just — I thought you liked Sunoo back! You’re always talking to him.”
“Yeah, cause we’re friends! Excuse me for not assuming everyone I talk to has a crush on me.”
“Is in love with,” Jungwon corrects.
“Thank you, Jungwon, cause that is so important right now!” you shout, frustrated.
“It is!” He retorts.
“I like Jungwon,” Chaeryeong spits out, looking straight ahead.
“Oh thank god,” Jungwon rushes out before getting out of his seat and straight up kissing her. You and Jay look at each other in amazement at what’s going on.
It’s only then that Sunoo makes his presence known once again.
“What is going on?,” he asks, standing on the edge of the stairs. Everyone freezes and turns to him, save for Chaeryeong and Jungwon who are still making out in the chair. You stand up.
“Can we talk?,” you ask him softly. He presses his lips together and nods. You walk over and take his hand, leading him upstairs.
Once you reach Jay’s living room, you take a quick scan, ensuring that the room is empty. Once you’re sure that it is, you seat Sunoo down on the couch. It’s quiet for a minute, as you try to read his expression, but for once, he’s guarded, and you can’t tell what he’s thinking at all. It’s unlike him, and you don’t like it at all.
You take a deep breath before speaking. “I’m sorry. Everyone just told me about how you… feel about me. I had no idea.”
He looks down. “That’s ok. I was trying to keep it a secret. Heeseung told me I should give you that dare to see how you felt about me. I didn’t want to, but he insisted. I didn’t mean to put you on the spot like that,” he says. It’s quiet for a beat, before he continues.
“I wasn’t really sure how you felt about me, but I know that you’re it for me. You’re kind, sweet, beautiful, funny, and so purely awesome. Being around you makes me feel like the luckiest guy in the world to be able to be in your presence… I was actually planning to ask you out tonight, after we all finished hanging out, but since I know you don’t feel the same I’ll just-“
And in that moment, a couple things run through your mind. You take in Sunoo’s disappointed face, trying to remain strong as you are about to potentially reject him. You remember Jay’s reaction when you voiced your feelings for him, and that he doesn’t share your affections. Instead, he likes Wonyoung, a beautiful girl that you don’t feel you’ll ever be able to measure up to.
This all swirls around in your mind, one thought racing after another, and you think it’s this brain tornado fogging your line of thought that causes you to respond-
“I’d go out with you.” Your jaw drops, and you quickly cover it with your hand. Sunoo finally meets your eyes, and they begin to sparkle with the same shine that you’re used to on him.
“R-really?,” he asks. You blink, processing what you’ve just subjected yourself to, before nodding hesitantly.
“Y-yeah. Sure I will.” You try to give as convincing of a smile as you can. You know, deep down, that you’ve made the wrong decision thanks to your big mouth, but you’re in too deep now to retract your statement. Sunoo wraps you in a big hug, the tightness of it broadcasting how excited he is. When he lets go, he immediately grabs both of your hands in his.
“Wow! I can’t believe it! Uh- thank you! I mean, uh, yeah! Wow! That’s cool. Haha, awesome,” he exclaims.
“I’m gonna go tell everybody downstairs,” he says, before jumping out of his seat and rushing back down to the basement.
You look at where he just sat, mind reeling over everything that just went down. You reminisce on the fate you just accepted: going on a date with a boy you only feel friendship for. You heave a deep sigh, before getting up, and following him down the stairs, preparing to keep the illusion going.
What have you just done?
