Elon Musk hasn’t been sighted at the picket lines in Missouri, Ohio, or Michigan, where autoworkers are striking against the Big Three US carmakers. Yet the influence of Musk and his non-unionized company Tesla have been everywhere since the United Auto Workers called the strike last week. In some ways, Tesla—the world’s most valuable automaker by market capitalization—set the whole thing in motion.
Tesla’s pioneering electric vehicles kicked off a new era that has turned the entire auto industry on its head. In a scramble to compete with Tesla and make that transition, the legacy automakers targeted by the current strike, General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis, have each pledged billions in global investment and have begun dramatically restructuring their operations. For workers, the “green jobs” being created can be scarcer and worse paying. Electric vehicle powertrains have many fewer moving parts than conventional gas-powered ones, and so they require 30 percent fewer vehicle assembly hours, according to one estimate. Plants that make EV batteries are generally outside the core, unionized auto supply chain. The United Auto Workers has seen a dramatic drop in membership due to jobs moving outside the US—it lost 45 percent of its members between 2001 and 2022. A future with more electric vehicles could mean fewer union jobs overall. “This strike is about electrification,” says Mark Barrott, an automotive analyst at the Michigan-based consultancy Plante Moran.
The new assembly plants that the legacy automakers need to pull off the transition have been stood up mostly in US states hostile to union organizing, such as Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. And because many of these plants are joint ventures between automakers and foreign battery companies, they are not subject to previous union contracts.
The UAW did not respond to a request for comment, but UAW president Shawn Fain told CNBC last week that the electric transition can’t leave workers behind. “Workers deserve their share of equity in this economy,” he said.
Tesla’s rise over recent years has also put ever-ratcheting pressure on the legacy automakers to cut costs. Including benefits, Musk’s non-unionized EV company spends $45 per hour on labor, significantly less than the $63 per hour spent in the Big Three, according to industry analysts.
Musk’s willingness to upend auto manufacturing shibboleths has also forced his legacy competitors to seek new efficiencies. Tesla led the way in building large-scale car casts, stamping out very large metal components in one go rather than making a series of small casts that have to be joined together. And it pioneered an automotive chassis building process that can be easily adapted to produce different makes and models.
Tesla’s Silicon Valley roots also helped it become the first automaker to envision the car as a software-first, iPhone-like “platform” that can be modified via over-the-air updates. And the company aims to automate more of its factories, and extract more of the materials it needs to build its batteries itself.
Tesla’s novel production ideas could soon lead the company to put even more pressure on legacy automakers. Musk said earlier this year that Tesla plans to build a new, smaller vehicle that can be made for half the production cost of its most popular (and cheapest) vehicle, the Model 3.
Musk says a lot of things, and many don’t come to pass. (The world is still waiting for the 1 million Tesla robotaxis promised by the end of 2020.) But Tesla has been disruptive enough to leave legacy automakers, including Detroit’s Big Three, “in a quest for capital,” says Marick Masters, who studies labor and workplace issues at Wayne State University's School of Business. Detroit’s automakers have made good money in the past decade—some $250 billion in profits—but also paid a significant chunk of it out in dividends. Pressure from Tesla and the EV transition it catalyzed has left them feeling as if they need every penny they can corral to keep afloat as the industry changes.
“They have little money to concede for union demands,” says Masters. The UAW’s wants include significantly higher wages, especially for workers who have joined the companies since their Great Recession and bankruptcy-era reorganizations, which left some with less pay and reduced pension and health benefits.
So far, the UAW has shown little patience for the idea that the automakers it is pressuring are cash-strapped and under competitive pressure. “Competition is a code word for race to the bottom, and I'm not concerned about Elon Musk building more rocket ships so he can fly into outer space and stuff,” UAW president Fain told CNBC last week when asked about pressure from Tesla. He has argued that production workers should receive the same pay raise received by auto executives over recent years.
When automakers have taken the opposite tack, insisting that they’re well capitalized and making plans to put them ahead of the electric car maker—well, that set up conditions for this strike too. The three American automakers are forecasted to make $32 billion in profits this year, a slight dip from last year’s 10-year high. “The more they toot their own horns about profitability, the more the union looks at them and says, ‘We want our rightful share,’” says Masters.
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment, but Musk has, in typical fashion, chimed in. He posted on X last week to compare working conditions at his companies with the competition, apparently seeking to turn the dispute he helped foment into a recruiting pitch. “Tesla and SpaceX factories have a great vibe. We encourage playing music and having some fun,” he wrote. “We pay more than the UAW btw, but performance expectations are also higher.” A UAW attempt to organize Tesla workers in 2017 and 2018, as the company struggled to produce its Model 3, failed. The National Labor Board ruled that Tesla violated labor laws during the organizing drive; the carmaker has appealed the decision.

Thinking more about similarities between gender and race, especially in a USAmerican context:
The brown paper bag test and blood quantum laws serve as a method of intracommunity policing for how well a person meets the ideal of that community. They remind me a lot of intracommunity policing rituals among boys, girls, men, and women. In those tests, if someone fails the shibboleth or doesn't have the right attire or doesn't have the right physical characteristic, they can be shunned as not being a "real" member of the demographic segment, even though an outsider would say that they obviously are.
For many years, the US recognized "White" and "Colored" as a binary racial categorization scheme, which had to be updated to respect non-binary immigrants such as Asians. Once that binary broke, we developed a much more diverse system, which was an improvement — yet it still fails to adequately capture the diversity of backgrounds and self-categorizations. Someone can be racially classified as Black in one group, and White in another group, for example.
This has obvious parallels in the current decade, where we are seeing problems with the binary "male" and "female" categorization of sex. It is to be hoped that this will be replaced with a more-granular and more-flexible gender classification system, to adequately capture complicated gend——
Actually, who am I kidding? Tear the whole system down; make it irrelevant. Classify people by the relevant characteristic at the point of relevancy, instead of trying to make a society-wide identifier that inaccurately gestures at the relevant characteristic. The bathroom designer doesn't care what tackle you have; they care whether you want to stand to pee. The gynecologist's office doesn't care what your pronouns are; they care whether you have, or have had, ovaries or testicles or both. The hematologist's office doesn't care about your skin color; they care about whether you're a risk for sickle cell anemia. The welfare office shouldn't care about your parentage; they should care about whether you're currently poor.
let’s make the next big internet trend a short informational lecture on the basics like the difference between race and ethnicity, and why there isn’t a boy and a girl version of everything especially sociological terms

“in which the ghoul pages desperately through a 3500 page document with no search function, looking for the shibboleth of feanor”
I’m not blogging leithian mk 1 any more but I just want to note that Chris included a detailed list of all the things that are long and tall, as an end note. He like, spent his entire life trying to decipher Johnald’s notes, so he could bring to us the faintly-pencilled name and origin of Nan, the giant of the south.
As I got lost somewhere in the beginning of “the tale of turambar” I started wondering why so many of our human heroes are intimately involved with Doriath, “the secret kingdom no-one can go into.” If we add Gondolin (”the other even more secret kingdom that REALLY no-one can go into”) I think ALL of the human heroes of the Silmarillion are involved with one of the two. Not counting heroes like Haleth who tragically didn’t get any dialogue. Is it just that the only humans who are heroes are the ones Special enough to trip into hidden kingdoms? Fate junk? Probably fate junk.
I was sort of skimming through Turin stuff and my eye was caught by Saeros (”Orgof”) insulting Turin’s... uncombed hair? Cute. In this one Turin throws a cup at him, killing him instantly, and everyone just kind of sits there silently at the overturned table as he runs out of the hall.
Turin laved his hands in the stream without the doors and burst there into tears, saying: "Lo! Is there a curse upon me, for all I do is ill, and now is it so turned that I must flee the house of my fosterfather an outlaw guilty of blood -- nor look upon the faces of any I love again."
Aw, Neithan. You neith’d yourself, dude.
I also want to mention (again?) that I really like Melkor being well known as a guy with an actual kingdom, where people worked. Granted, they were all Thralls, but he seemed a lot more like all of the other immortals who established kingdoms in Beleriand. I didn’t get the impression in the early drafts that like Everyone Was United Against Him. He was just an asshole neighbor? (later, in the Nauglafring story, we actually get the line “and there was peace with Melkor.”) This makes me suspect that the Porous Shadow of Doom overlaying the world in the final Children of Hurin would be a lot less huge and pervasive. But I’m not actually going to read it, just skim it. It was like 8 liveblogs long, or something, geez.
A manifestation of this lessened Porous Shadow of Doom is that when Turin returns home it’s late summer rather than winter; the grass has grown tall around Morwen’s house, and when Turin makes it to Brodda’s hall he doesn’t even pretend to be cowed, he immediately starts fucking things up. So, in that way, the original version of CoH was a lot less about Depression.
Also in this version Nienor doesn’t lose her ability to speak, so when Turin finds her and names her Niniel she can actually say “no don’t call me that.” He calls her that anyway. When she goes to live with Turin’s friends in Brethil they all constantly say “Would that the Valar would lift the curse on Niniel!” I can only aspire to be that obviously cursed, yknow.
AH. AT LAST HERE IS THE NAUGLAFRING. I can’t even remember if I’ve read it before but I Have Been Waiting.
I’m taking a break here to eat dinner because not eating makes me really stupid. Have you eaten recently? Are you stupid? If so, maybe have a snack! Sometimes I wish the internet would periodically remind--oh, no, I have a Personal Device for this exact purpose. Mm. peace out.
I’M BACK. After reading a couple paragraphs of this I realized I have read it before, but I didn’t blog it because I was procrastinating on CoH. Hurin has brought a bunch of cursed treasure to Tinwelint (do you like my horrible mixture of “canonical” and “noncanonical” names) and departed without taking any, in a huff. Then everyone in Menegroth starts murdering each other over this treasure; Tinwelint wins, and his wife (now named Gwenniel; I don’t understand how Tolkien could fail to get attached to ANY of the names he put in his first drafts) soothsays to him that he should dump it in the river because it is TRIPLE CURSED. He does, but then he stares at it for a while because, cursed. Gwenniel tells him that this isn’t even worth a third of what a Silmaril is, but like, are Silmarils useful for anything? Do they, strictly speaking, have any worth beyond the prestige value associated with possessing something super evil rare?
Some visitor says that it’s a crime to let all that gold go to waste when it could instead be used to make pretty things (natch, he is a guy who hangs out with Naugrim) and Tinwelint looks at his jewelry and is like “dang. I am a king and I do not look NEARLY that fine. please make something nice for me.” but he also grabs the elf guy and takes him hostage in a really impolite way. I have seen a lot more polite hostage-takings in the Silmarillion! Some so polite that the hostages didn’t even notice!
There’s a bunch of stuff here that I actually really enjoy, mostly descriptions of treasure, but I’m not going to blog it because I’m too lazy. I just want to note that I really enjoy the descriptions of treasure made by the Naugrim (in captivity). It’s very much the same impulse that led me to page for hours and hours through the LotR prop jewelry recreations magazines that my household for some reason received monthly when I was young.
Mm and then there’s a bunch of naugla/elda murders that I don’t care about. UGH and halfway through this story he changed Melian’s name back to Gwendelin. STG Tolkien!! Later someone is trying to kidnap her and we get this great bit:
Then said Gwendelin: "Thief and murderer, child of Melko, yet art thou a fool, for thou canst not see what hangs over thine own head." By reason of the anguish of her heart was her sight grown very clear, and she read by her fay-wisdon the curse of Mim and much of what would yet betide.
Then did Naugladur in his triumph laugh till his beard shook, and bid seize her: but none might do so, for as they came towards her they groped as if in sudden dark, or stumbled and fell tripping each the other, and Gwendelin went forth from the places of her abode, and her bitter weeping filled the forest. Now did a great darkness fall upon her mind and her counsel and lore forsook her...
The moral of the story is there’s a fine balance of anguish you have to maintain to be really good at seeing the future. IMO it’s probably “really sad but not depressed.” Oh um also, Huan is there. He works for Tinwelint now. I’m extremely offended, because this means Tolkien killed him EXPRESSLY because he was dating Luthien and Beren in the final lay. He killed Huan just so we couldn’t have nice things! And to make a point about Huan’s death metaphor, I guess. It was very artful, but I’m still mad we can’t have gay.
There’s some more murders. The asshole with nice jewelry is haunted by Gwendelin’s Glare. Oh! Luthien actually gets to meet her mom again! Haha Gwenelin says not to wear Nauglamir because it is SUPER CURSED but Beren is like “don’t worry about it! The Silmaril is so holy it cancels out all curses!” Which reveals a severe misunderstanding of what a Silmaril is, I think. Unless the Silmaril curse is stronger than all the other curses and it eats them, maybe? Like helpful strains of E. coli. Except then it mutates into a harmful strain of E. coli again--no, I’m sure there’s a better biology metaphor for this that I’m not thinking of. it was a harmful strain in the first place.
After this there’s more murders, this time feat. some Feanorions. And with that (skipping the story of Earendel) we have come to the end of Lost Tales pt 2! Next one is Lays of Beleriand, which I am going to attempt to skip because I have read all the good ones already. But I have to skip it manually so we’ll see I guess.

Drupal or WordPress: Which CMS suits your Website Creation requirement?
Tumblr media
A Content Management System (CMS) refers to computer software employed for creating, modifying, and managing the digital content on a website. Today, a CMS has become an indispensable tool for content management as well as website development for most businesses. But since there are a plethora of Content Management Systems available in the market, several entrepreneurs and even the web app development companies find it challenging to select the right CMS for their business.
The two major players that dominate the CMS market are Drupal and WordPress. As per a survey conducted byW3Techs, a renowned online portal that provides information on the usage trends of web technologies,
“WordPress is being used in 39.3% of the websites that account for 64% of the total CMS market share. On the other hand, Drupal is used by 1.5% of websites which accounts for 2.5% of the CMS market share.”
Both of these systems have shaped the websites of popular brands and have numerous feathers on their caps. For instance, BBC America, Sony Music, The Walt Disney Company, TechCrunch, MTV News, etc. have been built using WordPress; whereas eBay, NASA, Harvard University, Nokia, Timex, etc. have been built using Drupal.
If you are planning to use any of these for your website but struggling to comprehend the difference between the two, this article is for you. It compares WordPress and Drupal and provides clear visibility of their upsides and downsides. After reading this article, you will be in a position to select the right CMS that best suits your project.
Comparing WordPress and Drupal
Learning Curve and Ease of Usage
WordPress is a super-convenient option for novices building a website from scratch. It is easy to learn and install. It’s simple and intuitive interface offers a WYSIWYG editor, a user-friendly dashboard, a drag-and-drop feature through third-party plugins, options for creating blogs speedily, and countless themes to guide non-programmers. Also, thanks to a huge library comprising of 50,000+ plugins which allow the expansion of functionalities with very little or no coding at all.
Drupal, on the contrary, comes with a steep learning curve that can be quite challenging for beginners and non-programmers. But, Drupal is easy to use once you are well-versed with its technicalities. For instance, a thorough understanding of the numerous dropdowns simplifies UI navigation; the addition of the Layout Builder in Drupal8 eases out page creation and content editing. But, Drupal still needs custom coding for making the website look and function as desired.
Web Development Expenses
WordPress offers free investment initially, though it is only for the platform. For the functioning of the website, one needs to invest in a few other things like registration for the domain, web hosting, plugins, themes, etc. The expenses in curred depend on the level of customization required. One may need to hire a web app developer for a highly customizable website.
Drupal users have to spend more in comparison to WordPress for architecting a website and making it function. The reason is, apart from investing in hosting services, domain registration, etc. the website owner needs to invest in technical experts or hire web app developers for setting up the website.
Security Quotient
WordPress has a secured core, but safety issues crop up when third-party extensions are employed. Moreover, WordPress being more popular than Drupal is more prone to cyber-attacks. To overcome this problem, the WordPress team has increased testing and the frequency of security updates. They have also employed several third-party security plugins offering advanced safety measures.
Drupal’s eco-system is more secure comparatively. Cyber-attacks on Drupal are mostly unsuccessful due to its capability to integrate with sign-on systems such as LDAP, OpenID and, Shibboleth; the availability of two-factor authentication in Drupal 8 core; and its ability to detect common threats like brute-force attacks.
eCommerce Handling
Drupal uses Drupal Commerce for eCommerce apps. Drupal Commerce is clean, advanced, and delivers a rich UX. It comes with integrations that provide access to payment providers from all corners of the world. It offers limitless design freedom and social media integration capabilities. It is ideal for small as well as huge organizations.
The WordPress users need to add the WooCommerce platform through a free plugin for eCommerce applications. WooCommerce is quite easy to use and proves beneficial for small and mid-sized organizations.
SEO Capabilities
Drupal boasts of in-built SEO capabilities. Caching is available as a native feature in Drupal. It allows one to create titles based on URL nodes and customize metatags. Also, it consists of several modules like Redirect Module, XML Sitemap Module, Yoast SEO module, etc. to enhance its SEO abilities.
WordPress provides various plugins for SEO assistance, most popular being Yoast SEO Plugin that can control meta title, descriptions, sitemaps, etc. A Plugin like W3 Total Cache can be used to get help on increasing page load speed. However, the addition of plugins might create conflicts and cause malfunction.
Scalability
Drupal’s scalability is perfect for the requirements of large and complex enterprises. Drupal enables:
Creation of customized account classes
Using its own CLI utility for any assistance.
Also, Drupal comes with aggressive caching procedures for handling the magnanimous quantity of data transactions.
The scalability of WordPress focuses on the high-traffic of the websites. Also, custom caching plugins are available with major hosting platforms. It is ideal for blog/news and eCommerce sites handling millions of visitors. This makes WordPress highly performant.
Other differences
Drupal facilitates the creation of a multi-lingual website that reaches out to more customers across the globe. In WordPress, one must proactively choose the language while installing it.
Drupal offers robust functionalities and is considered to be more flexible. However, WordPress users can replicate the popular functionalities of Drupal with the help of certain plugins.
Final Verdict
I hope the aforesaid comparative analysis will help you select the ideal CMS for your project. For any technical assistance regarding these tools or website development, contact Biz4Solutions, a global-level mobile and web app development company. Reach us at [email protected]

fics i’d obliviate myself to re-read
So on the Drarry Discord we were discussing fics we’d love to be able to read for the very first time all over again, and the idea for this rec list was born!
These aren’t just good works- we all know the Drarry fandom is disproportionately blessed with incredibly talented writers! Something about each of these pieces was so striking that it made someone want to go back and get to read it for the very first time again, not just bookmark for re-reads.
They’re listed in no particular order. If you have the great fortune to have not read one of these fics before, know that there are TONS of people incredibly jealous of you!!
Feel free to reblog to add in your own ‘god damn i wish i could go back and reread that for the first time’ fics :)

Where does Fandom go from here?
I’ve been thinking and reading a lot about alternative platforms for online communities -- both for IRL and fandom communities. IRL and fandom have very different needs and face very different problems.
By IRL, I mean online communities of people I know in real life. Facebook. Linked-In, I guess. IRL communities have the following needs:
1. Verification of real-world identity 2. Exclusion of non-IRL observers, like paid infiltrators from Eastern Europe (you have to know someone to find someone) 3. Protection from data-mining by commercial and political researchers 4. Privacy management (exclusion of strangers and lower-tier acquaintances) 5. Rapid updates (for meet-ups, business, alternative to text-messaging) 6. Limited or limitable search function (I must be able to become invisible to stalkers) 7. Data storage (baby videos) 8. Control over the data (restriction from copying and reposting -- arguably unrealistic)
Fandom-specific needs like searchability and filters are less important, because important messages can be directed right to the intended recipient, and people are less likely to post adult content (or think to tag it if they are dumb enough to do so). Likewise, fandom does not need instant updates like an IRL platform does (you really want to know how Mom’s doing the second she gets out of surgery).
Fandom communities have the following needs, some of which are very different:
1. Anonymity / separating fandom identity from IRL identity 2. Global inclusion of community members (you don’t have to know someone to find someone) 3. Easy searchability 4. Ability to screen / filter adult content, both from the posting end and the reading end 5. Privacy management (ability to restrict certain especially sensitive content to those who can pass a shibboleth of some kind, but not necessarily restricting this content to certain users) 6. Troll silencing or evasion 7. Data storage (fanvids) 8. Resistance to censorship 9. Resistance to tracing the origin of content 10. Control over the data (ability to delete one’s own content)
Basically, fandom identities must be secret and mutable, and fandom communities must be open and inclusive. This does not mesh well with a blockchain-style messaging system like Scuttlebutt, in which all data is unalterable and is stored in a distributed fashion on every peer’s networked computer. I’m also a bit concerned about true peer-to-peer website hosting through software like Beaker. Yes, you can take your own data down and eventually the seeding computers will “forget” about it, but it’s all originally served from your personal machine. Also, forget about inclusivity or searchability with these systems, as far as I can tell. Global messaging through Scuttlebutt would occur only through pubs (volunteer servers) or mailing USB sticks across the ocean once a month, and Fandom is just too big for everyone to store all of it on their own computers. And .dat sharing through Beaker seems to be very, very slow, and, again, not searchable. It’s hard for noobs like me to figure out if something’s going wrong, or if it’s just still downloading. I’m not sure peer-to-peer is ready. The killer application is evading restrictions on Internet Service Providers. Potentially Article-13-proofing.
Here is a discussion about Scuttlebutt that I hope someone is able to follow, where they argue about what problems it actually solves relative to Facebook:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16877603
Here are some stats on currently-used federated networks. With federated, we have the concern that large files, like @lim ’s fanvids, could overload a volunteer server, so that might also not be a good solution. Also, they still rely on ISPs to route data to the local server.
https://the-federation.info/
I think Diaspora might come close to meeting the needs of fandom. It supports pseudonymous accounts and global community-building, as well as #, @, and likes like Tumblr. As far as I understand it, it is a federated system. You do not store your own data, but you can choose the “pod” (server) where it is stored. Therefore, you depend on the server’s owner/administrator to keep the software up to date, and the server’s physical location to protect you from local search and seizure law. Notably, Diaspora has been used by ISIS for recruiting, and it was nigh impossible to remove them : /
https://diasporafoundation.org/
Mastodon is in heavy use, but because communities are primarily formed within individual hubs, I’m afraid it would be hard to provide the global reach that Fandom needs, and Fandom could easily overwhelm a single hub if we all jumped onto it. Or at least piss off all the computer programmers already using the hub. (Look out, geeks! Here comes the drama club!)
https://joinmastodon.org/
Hubzilla is not currently in heavy use, but it claims to support a fine degree of permission granting, and also offers cloud storage. Supposedly it can be very public or very private, suitable for business or personal use. It also allows you to migrate your data between different servers, and to clone your data across multiple servers to make it more resistant to removal.
https://project.hubzilla.org/help/en/member/member_guide#Personal_Cloud_Storage
Man, I hope somebody more knowledgeable can figure this out.

E.U.-China Talks, Sweden, Working From Home: Your Tuesday Briefing
(Want to get this briefing by email? Here’s the sign-up.)
Good morning.
We’re covering slow progress in European Union trade talks with China, Sweden’s new pariah status as Europe reopens, and Thailand’s favorite fruits.
The meeting, postponed from March, was a first for new European leaders. The talks were intended to break the impasse on issues from state subsidies and technology transfer to climate change and equal opportunities for European companies.
But agreement has been more difficult as China has tightened control over its domestic economy and turned more combative in relations with Western powers, our diplomatic correspondent in Brussels writes.
Context: The European Union is China’s largest trading partner, and China is the second-largest for the bloc. China promised last year to create a more “level playing field” with Europe but “implementation has been lagging,” one senior European official said.
Also: European leaders said they had registered their concerns about China’s crackdown against the Uighurs and its proposed security law in Hong Kong. But among the bloc’s members, only Sweden has proposed European sanctions on China if it proceeds with the security law.
Sweden becomes a pariah in Scandinavia
Norway, Denmark and Finland have all closed their borders to Swedes this summer, fearing visitors would bring new coronavirus infections with them — a break in Scandinavia’s usual sense of mutual identity.
While those countries went into strict lockdowns, Sweden famously refused. It now has roughly twice as many infections and five times as many deaths as the other three nations combined, according to figures compiled by The Times.
Swedish officials are not amused by the country’s new pariah status, saying they have been stigmatized by an international campaign to prove them wrong. A second wave in the fall, the Swedish officials warn, might find their neighbors more vulnerable.
What it means: Long considered the holders of the best passports in the world for global travel, Swedes cannot move as easily now in the European Union. Only France, Italy, Spain and Croatia are welcoming them without restrictions. But the behavior of Sweden’s closest neighbors has been most painful, the country’s foreign minister said. “That will take time to heal, it was too harsh,” she said.
In other news:
New coronavirus cases in the U.S. accounted for 20 percent of all new infections worldwide on Sunday, even as the country’s population makes up 4.3 percent of the world’s.
A top health official in South Korea, Jeong Eun-kyeong, said that the country had been battling a “second wave” since early May. South Korea has reported new cases in the double digits in recent weeks, after recording as many as 800 cases a day several months ago.
Germany’s largest pork processing plant has recorded more than 1,300 cases among its workers.
Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house reopened on Monday and performed its first concert to 2,292 plants.
President Trump signed a proclamation suspending many categories of foreign work visas until the end of the year, citing the high unemployment rate that Americans are facing amid the pandemic.
New York City entered a much larger reopening phase on Monday — one that allows employees to return to offices, outdoor dining and some in-store shopping, and also allows hair salons, barbershops and real estate firms to restart their work.
As India’s health care system buckles during the coronavirus crisis, the story of a pregnant woman who died after eight hospitals denied her care while she was in labor is increasingly common.
Here are the latest updates and maps of the outbreak.
The Times is providing free access to much of our coronavirus coverage, and our Coronavirus Briefing newsletter — like all of our newsletters — is free. Please consider supporting our journalism with a subscription.
What will white awareness of racism add up to?
The sustained outcry over George Floyd’s death has compelled many white Americans to acknowledge the anti-black racism that is prevalent in the U.S. — and even examine their own culpability for it. Some have attended racial justice demonstrations and purchased books about racial inequality. Others are covering up their tattoos of Confederate flags and swastikas.
Anti-racism activists say the concerns aren’t just symbols or slurs but entire systems governing how Americans live. Some of the same communities where white liberals have protested have also seen resistance to efforts to integrate public schools and neighborhoods. While some consider the questioning of white supremacy profound, others think it’s unconscionably late.
Research: There is little interpersonal contact between white and black Americans. One in five white respondents to a poll from the Public Religion Research Institute last year said that they rarely or never had an interaction with someone of a different race.
Quote of note: “What kind of nation is this, that can be comfortable with a police officer kneeling on someone’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds?” a professor of African-American studies said. “And when you start asking that question, then all of the kinds of narratives and shibboleths begin to quake.”
Read the latest updates on the U.S. protests.
If you have 5 minutes, this is worth it
Thailand: the ‘Great Power nation of fruit’
Southeast Asia’s fruits are like no other. There is a fruit that emits a sticky sap when peeled and another that stains fingernails mauve for those craving its succulent flesh. And there is the rambutan, which means “hairy thing” in Malay. Above, jackfruit at a market in Bangkok.
Our Bangkok correspondent looked at some of Thailand’s favorites: lychees, mangos, mangosteens, durians and dragon fruits, among others. Fruit producers are predicting an increase in overseas shipments this year, despite the coronavirus.
Here’s what else is happening
Serbian elections: President Aleksandar Vucic’s nationalist party won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections on Sunday, bolstering his control of the state despite boycotts from the opposition. The result could drive peace talks with Kosovo.
U.S. election campaign: Former Vice President Joe Biden is narrowing the list of candidates to be his running mate in the presidential election. Here are the 12 women being considered.
U.S.-China tension: The Trump administration designated four more Chinese news agencies as foreign missions — China Central Television, China News Service, People’s Daily and Global Times. The new round of restrictions is likely to lead to some form of retaliation from China.
Syrian doctor arrested: Alaa Mousa has been arrested in Germany on accusations that he tortured a detainee in his home country, where he worked in a secret military prison in 2011. He is the third former Syrian official who entered Germany as a refugee to be arrested on charges of crimes against humanity.
What we’re reading: This Los Angeles Times feature about the California roots of the Black Lives Matter movement and its founders. It’s a helpful look at where the global movement came from.
Now, a break from the news
Cook: These pork kebabs are loaded with whole spices, green chile and garlic. The marinade can also work on just about anything.
Watch: In movies, a locked-down set is often an artistic choice (or sometimes the result of a strapped budget). Here’s a look at six movies that take place mostly in a single location.
Listen: As black Americans fought for equal rights in the 1960s, music reflected their calls to action. This playlist features 15 essential black liberation jazz tracks that push the boundaries and celebrate blackness.
Read: Ottessa Moshfegh’s new novel, “Death in Her Hands,” is a murder mystery with no body. Our critic writes that he enjoyed the book more after it was over. “It has an afterlife in your mind,” he writes.
At Home has our full collection of ideas on what to read, cook, watch and do while staying safe at home.
And now for the Back Story on …
Succeeding at working from home
Being productive in an office job is harder when your office is your home. But three months into the work-from-home era, some best practices are emerging. Our Smarter Living team came up with these suggestions.
Shift your mind-set. More than ever you will be measured on output, not on how many hours you sat at your desk. Creating chunks of time to turn off notifications and focus deeply on your own projects, called “time-boxing,” can lift the quality of your work.
Speak up quickly if something isn’t working. It’s harder now for managers to see that you are spinning your wheels and aren’t making progress. Let them know if you are experiencing problems.
Remove distractions. Without the boss periodically peeking over your shoulder, it’s easy to take a quick break, and then realize an hour later you’re still on that unending Twitter or Instagram scroll. Take social media off your work machine. Leave your phone in another room.
Don’t forget career advancement. Keep thinking and talking about the areas you want to improve, the parts of the company you want to explore and how you may get there.
Overcommunicate. If you’re a manager, provide additional context. Explain the “whys” of decisions and their possible effects to replace the information picked up organically in the office.
That’s it for this briefing. See you next time.
— Isabella
Thank you Melissa Clark provided the recipe. You can reach the team at [email protected].

Choose the most secure CMS from Drupal, Joomla, WordPress
If you are planning to create a website for your business, you might feel overwhelmed by the options available. Most small and medium business owners usually prefer a website where they can update the content without contacting a developer team every time, hence a Content Management System (CMS) is a logical choice.
When it comes to PHP CMS's, there are three most popular  : WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. Choosing a CMS is an important decision that can have huge repercussions for your website. All three of them have a lot in common, but they still have their own pros and cons. Here's a comparison of WordPress,  Drupal and Joomla to find out which is the best for your website.
Drupal
Drupal has always been very much serious about security. They say that Drupal is designed to handle the gravest of internet vulnerabilities. It's  security has the capability to prevent the website from crashing under vulnerable circumstances. Many leading brands, corporations, and even governments rely on Drupal to build critical applications and websites.
Drupal has a very large developer community across the globe, ensuring a faster response to any issues supported by a dedicated security team and efficient service provider system. Robust coding standards and a diligent process of community code review also help in preventing many security issues. Here are some features that make Drupal the undeniable winner when it comes to security.
User Access Control
Drupal gives the administrator complete control over who can access their website. The administrator can create a role for the users and provide permission for the specific purpose.
Password Access
The passwords for Drupal accounts are encrypted well before they are stored in their database. Drupal supports a wide range of password policies like complex, minimum length, expiration, etc. Standard authentication practices in the Industry, which include 2-Factor Authentication and SSL, are also supported by Drupal. Single Sign-on systems including LDAP, SAML, OpenID, and Shibboleth are combined with Drupal in its production applications.
Database Encryption
The Database Encryption is also available in Drupal to increase the security of the platform. Also you can encrypt the database partially to protect only specific information leaving genral information unencrypted to reduce the load. This is helpful if you want to protect some specific information only.
Brute Force Detection
Drupal can detect and provide protection against the brute-force attacks on passwords.  This is done by limiting the login attempts from a single IP address over a definite period of time. The administrator can view all the failed attempts. Also Drupal can be configured to ban individual IP’s and range of addresses.
Malicious Data Entry
Drupal’s API ensures that every data entered into the database is validated before storing. Drupal prevents CSRF (Cross Site Request Forgery) attacks as it injects tokens into forms when they are generated.
Reduced Possibility of DoS Attacks
Denial of Service attacks is reduced due to the extensible cache layer that is preconfigured with CSS caches, javascript, and basic page. Performance technologies like Redis, Memcache, etc can be deeply integrated with the system. A common feature is a granular expiry. A multi-layered cache framework is suitable for a website that receives high traffic.
WordPress
WordPress is undoubtedly the most popular CMS on the planet, and for this reason it is exposed to a constant attention from hackers. The WordPress security team is made up of 25 experts, including lead developers and security researchers. A number that seems low, given the number of sites running off WordPress is around 75 million and accumulates up to 27% of the entire net.
WordPress offers enhanced security for members for their paid service - WordPress VIP. By paying for the VIP treatment, a dedicated group will do an in-depth code review to seek out vulnerabilities. They will also guide customers with suggestions for best practices in development to make sure that the site will continue to live on without significant maintenance costs or major issues.
The major security vulnerability with WordPress, and most CMS, is the entry points created using third party plug-ins and extensions, which make up 56% of known vulnerabilities in WP. Overall, the security is at the level it needs to be to protect such a vast number of sites, and security suggestions are updated frequently by the maintenance team to guide users on the best security practices.
 Joomla
Joomla is an easy-to-use CMS that appeals to those who may have limited experience and knowledge in managing content online, or who may be looking for a simple CMS solution. This means that even though Joomla’s core is highly secure, there is pitfalls users can fall into when implementing their system without appropriately configuring all system components.
Documentation made readily available by Joomla encourages users to focus on what they can do to improve their system security, as opposed to just relying on the system itself. It is worth noting that Joomla has the least amount of individuals on their security team with just 13 people, but provides solid information to individuals using their services to configure security in the appropriate way.
Conclusion
You can conclude from this comparison that Drupal does take solid care of the security of its users. Although Joomla and WordPress are serious about security as well, Drupal is suitable for the websites that require tough security. This is the reason that many government websites trust Drupal for website development. The system updates help to provide better protection, so make sure you keep your PHP CMS updated. Joomla and WordPress use commercial plugins that are known to be insecure. Drupal’s dedicated team for the purpose ensures better security.
