Middlemarch: Alternate Universe [Ravus/Reader] Finale
AN: This final chapter of Middlemarch was a long time coming. I’m so sorry for how long it took!
There are purposely some stuff left unanswered and open ended, though if asked, I will elaborate on it :3

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the Trial of the Archean
It was immensely awkward, you decided in that moment. Why? Because after that moment of affection and intimacy from the High Commander, it seemed as if the both of you had taken five enormous steps backwards in terms of your relationship. Despite your past together as playmates, and despite the fact that he had saved you, Ravus still seemed to resent you immensely. The morning after you recovered your memories of your connection to Ravus, you’d been greeted with the old stoic and borderline antagonistic attitude you’d seen briefly. When confronted, Ravus had simply huffed, stated that nothing good could come of any relationship with a Lucian, he’d taken his paperwork and all but stomped out of the room. Occasionally, you’d see Ravus come check on your recovery progress, but it had been the last that you had personally spoken with him.
His eyes are not the same. You observed during one of his visits to check on your health. A metal arm, and a different colored eye. Probably from the aftermath of trying to wear the Ring of the Lucii. There were so many questions that you wanted to ask him. Why did you stop writing to me?
Had I done something wrong?
Why are you so cold to me now?
It’s been three days since you’d last spoken with the broody man, and the bitterness was starting to build up again. Just like it did when Noctis abandoned you in favor of his love, Lunafreya, you felt the loneliness build. Except, unlike the last times, where you had Ravus and then Cor, this time you had no one. With Ravus seemingly abandoning you as well, you’d been left as prey for the one person you knew who liked to mess with people the most.
Yes, as of right now, you were being dragged around from location to location by the Chancellor of Niflheim himself, Ardyn Izunia. You’d protested heavily when the auburn headed man practically stormed your room and swept you off your feet, carrying you like a sack of potatoes as he seemed to teleport in the same manner of those blessed by the Crystal.
Once Ardyn seemed to touch back down onto solid ground, he let you squirm out of his hold, aiming a rather mischievous look at you. “So? How was my driving?”
What in the- Driving? You groaned as your stomach turned unpleasantly, “I think I’m gonna puke.” You’d used the King’s power to phase and teleport before, but never through such a long distance. At least, you gathered this from the sudden fact that you were outside the airship, in a military base. Though appreciating the fact that Ardyn had given you some time to regain your footing, you still gave him a stern glare. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“Aww. You don’t want to see your beloved friends? I thought I told you that your beloved Prince was waiting.” Ardyn pouted heavily, and while you admitted that the look worked for him, it still didn’t seem right that a man his age would pout.
The twitching in your cheek came out of nowhere as you opened your mouth to shoot out a snarky reply. You were interrupted by a loud thud when you tried to snark back, bringing a halt to your statement as Ardyn tsked, waving his hand for you to follow. “Come hither. Wouldn’t want anyone getting killed now.”
Ardyn walked off before you could answer, leaving you following behind at a slow pace. What the hell is wrong with this guy?
“I’d say that’s far enough.” you suddenly heard Ardyn chide, like an adult scolding children, though you snickered at the irony. “A hand, Highness?” Your eyes narrowed, Highness?
“Not from you.”
“Oh, but I’m here to help.”
“And how is that?”
The familiar voices had you sprinting at full speed, catching Ravus’s eye as you practically slid around the corner to see your friends.
“By first bringing back something you lost.” you heard Ardyn answer.
“What do you mean by-”
“NOCT!” You practically screeched, sprinting past Ravus and Ardyn to glomp your friend.
All around you, there were gasps of surprise. The man in your arms froze, unable to move in his disbelief, afraid that everything was a dream. That you weren’t really in his arms. “Y-Y/N?”
“I’m so glad you’re all okay!” You cried in relief at seeing your childhood friends and brother.
“We thought you died!” Gladio looked on the verge of tears as he ran to engulf you and Noctis in a great hug. Prompto and Ignis followed soon after, and you allowed yourself to grin in happiness at being reunited with those you had considered your family.
“Y/N… You shouldn’t be running around so soon.” Ravus protested, extending a hand, something resembling worry passing over his face for just the briefest of moments. When you only ignored the older man, his face hardened, schooled into another stoic mask as he turned his attention to Ardyn. “I told you not to bother them.”
“I could let dear Y/N die of boredom, now could I?” Ardyn argued with a tone that suggested a lack of seriousness. “To torture your Little Light by abandoning them in that cold metal prison… how cruel.” The Chancellor tsked, a knowing glint to his eyes as he started to walk away. “Come now, Commander. Make haste.” His sly gaze spoke volumes as he stared at Noctis, “When next we meet, it’ll be across the seas. Just so happens we have business of our own with the tutelary deity, don’t we?”
Ravus refused to acknowledge Ardyn, his gaze set upon your form, still surrounded by your friends. There was an almost pleading sadness to his eyes when he stared after you, but you stubbornly refused to acknowledge him in return. Something about Ardyn was hauntingly familiar as he bid the group farewell and walked away with Ravus. You shook your head in confusion, forcing your mind away from the matter, simply happy to have been reunited with Noctis and Gladio.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During the Trial of Leviathan
You missed being able to throw your weapon and teleport, especially now that the entirety of Altissia was under siege by the Hydraean and Niflheim forces. Noctis, Gladio, Prompto, and Ignis had all begged for you to stay with the evacuated civilians, but you couldn’t sit back and let your friends do all the fighting. The minute that the Hydraean appeared to answer Noctis’ call, you’d sprinted back into the city just before the waves rose to form a barrier. When the Niflheim airships encroached upon the city, seeming to head towards the Alter of the Tidemother, you sprinted faster, slipping the communications earpiece that Ignis had given you into your left ear. The floor rumbled as the waves shook the water bound city, and still you didn’t stumble. “Ignis? What’s going on?” “Y/N! Whatever you do, stay far away from the city!” It’s your brother’s voice that advises you from the earpiece, sounding like he was running somewhere.
“Uh…” You paused your sprint to look around for a higher vantage point, “Maybe too late for that.” There’s an exasperated groan from the other end of the comm link from your older brother. “Fine… just… play it safe, okay? I can’t lose you.”
You’re about to respond when an angry roar shakes the area. Stand on top of a building after having scaled the walkways and side tiles, you could see the Hydraean screech in anger from afar before attacking a flying speck… who you assumed to be Noctis. Remembering that you should have responded to Gladio, you spoke in a winded voice. “I’ll stay away from anything overwhelming, but it’s still my job to protect Noctis.” The tired sigh from Gladiolus brings a regretful frown to your face, knowing that your big brother only wanted you to be safe from harm. “I guess that’s all I can really ask for, huh… Love you, sis.” “Love you, too, big bro.” Was the response you gave before jumping towards another rooftop, making your way towards the Altar of the Tidemother.
You’re just about halfway to the altar when a bright beam lights up the sky, the ground shaking violently following. The Archenn rises from the water to challenge the Hydraean, and your comms piece crackles to life, Ignis’ voice filtering through. “Noct! Do you read me?” You could hear Ignis call over the comms unit before Titan slammed a fist into the water, creating a shockwave that knocked the approaching airships out of the sky and into the city.
Too focused on keeping your balance on top of one of the Altissian buildings, you failed to notice that one of the airships had crashed into a towering piece of architecture, sending debris plummeting down around you.
“Ah! Damn!” You cursed, eyes darting around for a building that was still stable. When you didn’t see any to climb up towards, you sprinted over to the edge of the building, deciding that down into the water was better than getting crushed by pieces of building. “Let’s hope the water isn’t too turbulent.” You muttered before jumping off in a pencil dive.
Not even 15 minutes later
You coughed and sputtered as you tread water, once more having been knocked under the Altissian waters from the violent waves that crashed around the once beautiful city. The communication device fizzled in your ear, emitting only a few words from your brother, Prompto, and Ignis before dying from all the water damage.
“Great. Just great.” You muttered as you swam towards the closest ledge and pulled yourself out of the tepid water. Yanking the device out of your ear before it shocked you, you took a minute to rest your muscles, sea water dripping off your body as an exhausted groan left your lips. “Okay… Altar… that’s where I need to go.”
Climbing to your feet, you glanced around the street for any sign of enemies before allowing your gaze to drift upwards, wanting to get on top of another rooftop. Even among the rubble that littered the street, there wasn’t any easy way to climb up to the rooftops. “Okay then… I guess we’re doing this the old fashion way.” The sigh that escaped your lips was cut short by the distinct sound of a screeching Magitek soldier. “Astrals preserve me.” You cursed with a roll of your eyes, turning in place to summon your greatsword in a flash of crystalline light just as a large group of Niflheim puppet soldiers rounded the corner of the building towards you, surrounding you on all sides.
You’d seen the inhuman soldiers fight before, but had never personally fought one until now. As such, you remained a cautious distance away from the Niflheim puppets as they attacked with random patterns and seemingly zero team coordination. There was no technique for you to be weary of, no pattern for you to exploit. Just the overwhelming number of them. They were just mindless toys of the Niflheim Empire, but that was fine. You’d faced greater odds before. It took a little bit of time on your part, as well as the use of some thunder elemancy, but all the Magitek soldiers eventually fell at your feet.
“Waste of my time!” You growled, moving to scale the nearest wall in order to get a better vantage point of the city. Explosions and gunfire could be heard all around you, though you barely paid attention to anything besides the beam of light from the Altar. “Gotta get to Noct and Luna.” You muttered before sprint forward once more, doing your best to dodge the magitek armors that patrolled the ruins near the Altar.
The closer you came to the Altar, you began to notice the skies darken, rain falling as the Archaean and Hydraean departed. The beam of bright light that was once your waypoint dimmed and disappeared just as you rounded the corner and onto the path towards the altar. “No, no, no, no!” You pleaded under your breath, “Please don’t be too late to save them.”
For all the resentment you held towards Lunafreya, you didn’t hate the older woman. She had supported and protected Noctis during the darkest times of his childhood, and you swore to protect those that your King cared for.
But now, as your eyes took in the scene before you… of two tall familiar figures standing over the fallen lovers, you realized that you’d failed. The radiant glow from Lady Lunafreya dimmed until it was extinguished, though you still forced your tired feet to stumble forward, stopping to stand beside Ravus and Ignis, an expression of horror on your face.
“No…” the grief in Ravus’ voice gave you pause as he stumbled disbelieving towards Luna’s body. You could understand part of the grief, having lost your father only days before, but you couldn’t imagine losing your entire family.
“Ravus…” you lifted a hand to reach out to him, but the Prince of Tenebrae continued forward, a growl to his tone.
“First, the Lucians stole from me my mother…” Your breathing paused as you scrambled through your memory for what little you remembered of the old reports on the attack. We didn’t… But we weren’t the ones that killed the Queen. Eyes darting to rest on Ravus’ back, your body tensed as he continued to speak, drawing his sword to strike down the unconscious Noctis. “And now they make a sacrifice of my sister!”
Ignis reacts just a split second faster than you do, stopping Ravus’ downward strike. Bewildered and still shocked from the lack of life in both Lunafreya and Noctis, you missed the two protectors’ exchange until Ignis roughly shoved Ravus back, taking the enraged and grief-stricken Prince on and pleading for him to return to his senses.
Trusting Ignis to handle calming Ravus down, you dashed forward and fell to your knees, checking both Oracle and King for heartbeats. “If I can do one thing right this day, please let it be to save them.” You pray, utilizing what little first aid you learned. As was expected of a King’s Sworn Shield, you confirmed that Noctis was okay first before moving onto Lady Lunafreya. The rain had long since washed away most of the evidence, but from the trail of blood from the altar proper to where the two lovers lay, you knew that Luna had lost too much blood for your meager first aid to be able to do anything about. Still, you worked to staunch the bleeding, using as much Curative Magic as your body could produce, hoping that you could at least prolong her life enough for proper aid to arrive.
Don’t die, You begged, pulling at all your magical reserves as you forced yourself to use the unnatural magic. Don’t die, Lunafreya. Don’t leave Noctis. Don’t leave Ravus. Please! Healing magic was never supposed to be used by a Lucian, only the Oracles of Tenebrae, and despite using everything you had in your body, the spell did nothing. Exhausted and without energy, you slouched forward with a miserable sob. “No! What good am I if I can’t even save one life?”
Before you knew it, a body sank heavily to the floor beside you, reaching out towards Luna’s body. “But… part of me always hoped… that I might see you happy one day. Your burdens lifted, free to live and love as you please.” Your eyes darted away from such a private moment between brother and sister, though it didn’t stop you from hearing, “You would have made a beautiful bride.”
Your eyes darted to stare at Noctis, silently agreeing that Luna would indeed have made a beautiful bride for Noctis. The Fates are cruel. You lamented as the darkness was briefly illuminated by Luna’s passing, her spirit appearing above the water… beautiful, benevolent, and lively as she smiled towards her brother, who begged for her not to go. And as you watched Ravus sob, something within you mourned with him.
Once upon a time, Ravus had been the light to coax you away from the darkness. As you shifted weakly to sit beside him, you knew that it was time you acted as his light.
Hesitantly, you extended a trembling hand to rest on his Magitek arm, drawing mournful heterochromatic eyes to your own. Nothing was said between the two of you, though Ravus raised his right hand to grasp your own.
Please stay with me. His eyes plead, tears trailing downwards with the rain.
A squeeze of your hand was all the answer that the Prince needed, I won’t leave you.
After a small lot of time, the group of you could hear thudding footsteps approach. “Gladio!” You raised your head from where it rested on Ravus’ shoulder to stare at your older brother, only to furrow when he ignored Ignis’ follow up questions in favor of staring at the man beside you.
“Well, well.” Your brother muttered a little too elegantly as he approached. “What have we here?”
You rose, your greatsword summoned with the intention to block your brother’s attack upon Ravus, but even summoning your weapon proved too exhausting, and you slipped, slumping into Ravus’ firm back, which remained steady even as he blocked Gladio’s strike, “You… “ Ravus growled, staring up at your brother’s towering form. “Ardyn.”
“Ardyn?” Blinking in confusion, you watched in horror as the illusion dropped, and Ardyn Izunia stood before the lot of you, Niflheim soldiers surging forward to detain all of you.
Watching as they manhandled Ignis and Ravus ignited a fury within you. And despite how exhausted you already were, you called upon the power bestowed to you by the late King Regis. A powerful surge of electricity discharged from your body, shocking the troops around you and Ravus enough for the Prince to distract Ardyn. Weakened from reaching far over your limit, you reacted too late to block the descent of Ardyn’s arm to your neck, hearing only the cry of your name from Ignis and Ravus before your vision went black and you slumped forward into the Chancellor.
The next you woke, Noctis had sealed himself into the Crystal and eternal night had fallen over the world.
Y/N
I know if you were awake, you would have yelled at me for doing this. But I have a destiny to fulfill. I wanted to be there for you when you woke up, but the world couldn’t wait. While I take care of what I need to, I’m leaving everything to you, Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto. And do me a favor? Live for yourself. I know you spent your entire life training to protect me, but I don’t want your life to go to waste. Ravus promised me that you’d be safe in Tenebrae, and I hope that when I do return, you’ll have your own story to tell me.
With Love,
Noctis
You sighed as you read the letter in your hand for probably the fiftieth time since you woke up. The pristine room seemed to taunt you as you sat in the soft bed, mulling over Noctis’ request. “Live for myself, huh?” An anxious laugh escaped your lips, “How to even begin…”
“You could start by trying to leave the bed.” A voice suggested dryly from the room entrance.
The smile that rose to your lips didn’t go unnoticed as Ravus stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him as he balanced a tray of food you. “Good morning, Ravus.” You greeted your host… though caretaker seemed a more appropriate title for the Prince of Tenebrae at that point.
Setting the tray of food down onto the small tea table, Ravus strolled forward to extend a hand, urging you to your feet gently as he stood by you for support. “It is actually closer to the afternoon, but that is of no consequence.” With one arm supporting your waist, the ex-Commander extended his left arm to pull out a plush chair before guiding you to the seat. “You should eat to recover your strength.” The last of the Nox Fleurets suggested, buttering a slice of bread for you before handing it over.
Muttering a soft ‘thank you,’ you took the buttered croissant, noting with affection that Ravus had remembered your love of spreading a copious amount of butter onto your bread. “You remembered how I like my butter.”
The ex-High Commander allowed his lips to curl at the edges, “I don’t think I could ever forget your bad habits.”
“Hmph.” You stuck your nose up and pouted haughtily as you bit into the bread, chewing and swallowing before answering Ravus. “Butter makes everything better, Rae.” Ravus merely continued to smile, his only answer being a soft chuckle as he set about fixing you a cup of tea.
Now that he wasn’t looking at you so closely, you could see the well hidden exhaustion on the twenty-eight year old. Having been trained to read people, you could tell that recent events had truly taken a toll on your childhood friend. “I can practically feel your stare burning a hole into me, Y/N.” Ravus’ blue and purple eyes suddenly meet yours, “I suspect you have some questions.” Unfortunately, you were never that subtle with your observations…
Licking your lips to get rid of the butter and crumbs, but also as a nervous habit, you set the croissant down. “I understand all that Ignis told me… about the Starscourge… about Ardyn’s true identity… and about Noctis’ role in all this. But what I don’t understand is why I’m here in Tenebrae. I appreciate what you’ve done for my friends and I… and I’m more grateful that you’ve allowed me to stay here but… Surely your contempt of Lucians has not magically disappeared.”
“You needed a safe place to rest and recover.”
“I could have done that in Lucis. My brother and sister would have looked after me.” You quickly refuted Ravus’ reasoning. “Ravus… I know you promised to protect me when we were children… but… in light of what happened… I don’t think you should feel obligated to protect me.”
Blue and purple eyes gazed upon you with hurt and outrage, “You think that I allowed your stay here out of some misplaced sense of obligation?”
Not letting his tone affect you, you merely stared back at the Tenebraen Prince calmly, “Ravus… What else am I supposed to think of this situation? You cut off all connection with me for over ten years, and when I see you again, you make it no mystery that you abhor Lucians. And now, for whatever reason, you’ve suddenly taken an interest in my well-being.” Ravus almost looked ashamed for a moment, “So, I’m asking you now, Ravus. Why am I here?”
The silence that descended upon the room was tense and awkward. And when Ravus wouldn’t meet your eyes, you just wanted to kick yourself. And why can’t I keep my fat mouth shut. He was being nice, Y/N. Nice after ten years of ignoring your existence. And now he’s lost his little sister, and you’re being ungrateful. Sighing heavily, you took a breath before speaking, an apology on the tip of your tongue.
“Ravus, I-”
“... Is it too much to not wish to be alone?”
The heartbroken and stressed edge to Ravus’ voice brought a wince to your face. And there you go, Y/N. Congratulations on being the most insensitive a-hole on this side of the planet. “Rae…”
“My sister is dead, Y/N. The last of my family has been taken from me and I…” His voice caught as his head turned to look in your direction, tearful eyes meeting yours. “She was all I had left. And now I have nothing.” You weren’t entirely sure if Ravus had even allowed himself to mourn. “Would you fault me for wanting a friend?”
You were on your feet before your brain had time to think about it. It’s not too much to ask. You want to say, but what leaves your lips is, “I’m here.” Your legs fail the moment that you put weight on them, and while you don’t scream or emote, you cry on the inside when Ravus catches you. WHAT IS THIS HORRIBLE CLICHE.
Hoping that the moment hadn’t been ruined as you’re gently guided to the floor, you continue to speak, sinking to your knees alongside Ravus. “I’ll be here for you, Ravus. Until you no longer need me.”
Something in Ravus’ expression cracks and he pulls you close, embracing you as his body trembles, “Oh, Little Light. I don’t think there will be a time where I won’t need you.”

Shian’s Middlemarch AU Extra Verse: What Should Have Been Part 1 (Ravus Nox Fleuret/Reader)
AN: It’s been a looooong time coming, but here it is! Because the AU is so long, I’ve split it into two parts. The one posted today, and another in the coming days when I am not dying of finals.
For those of you new to my Middlemarch series, this is the Alternate Happy Ending that everyone wanted me to write in response to the angst that the original series was. But as it just so happened, Episode Ignis had the Extra Verse, which was a happy ending of sort, so I decided to base this story off that. The first part of this story will not have spoilers for Episode Ignis, but the last part will.
Well, without further ado... ENJOY!

The Day of the Invasion
You glanced tiredly at the high ceilings towering above your limp form. Your senses had dulled significantly as the blood drained from your body, forming a crimson pool beneath you. Despite all your valor, your foolish bravery, Glauca had cut you down without hesitation, allowing your body to fall with praise for your honor. And as a last homage to your young life, had laid your body to rest beside the fallen King Regis.
At first, you’d been able to hold the King’s cold hand, but as the feeling left your body, you could no longer find the simple comforts from the fallen king. It was funny. Dying. It felt like your entire body was submerged under water, vision clouded, hearing muffled, and the energy just draining out of you. “Like an old battery.” You chuckled cynically, before choking on your blood. I don’t want to go out like this. You thought to yourself. Someone save me. I have so many things I want to do. I want to grow old and have a family. “I just want someone to be there for me.” You gasped weakly, feeling tears fall down your pale and bloody face.
You could feel the explosions and destruction happening from the outside world, several stories above and rock layers away. Everything seemed so far away, and despite having the King’s body next to your own fading one, you’ve never felt so alone. “Why is it so cold?” a gasp of breath into your blood filled lungs accompanied by the gurgle of something thick dripping out of your mouth, “I’m not ready to go yet.” You sobbed, staring up at the light coming from the chamber’s stained glass above.
Perhaps the Astrals heard your dying pleas, for next you knew, your body was being lifted by a muscular arm, and you started at the warmth, the heat, the comfort, radiating from the body holding you, unconsciously clutching to the white fabric, not wanting to feel so cold and alone again. You could only whimper as the arm pulled you to a firm chest and a kiss was pressed to the lids of your closed and tired eyes.
“Don’t leave me.” You begged over and over again when you’re lifted from the floor and onto a platform, weakly clutching at the figure with the mismatched eyes and clearly not thinking with a sound mind.
The man with the platinum blonde hair took your hand in his own and didn’t leave your side even as you were transported out of that haunting chamber. “I will not, Little Light.”
And then, it was like the remaining strength in your body was given permission to leave, the image of worried mismatched eyes gazing down at you in horror as your vision faded to black.

The Night of the Invasion
“My, my, did you actually love something other than your sister, High Commander?” a teasing, light hearted voice rang through your consciousness. And although it was teasing, you had the feeling that there was a subtle hint of malicious intrigue.
“That notion is absurd.” another voice answered after a few seconds, seeming annoyed and cold. “I no longer have attachments to those aligned with the so called Chosen King.”
“And yet you commanded the treatment and care towards Y/N Amicitia, a Sworn Shield to the Kings descended from the Line of Lucis.” the lighter voice chuckled, with clear amusement at the mention of your name. You couldn’t open your eyes, with the lack of energy in your body, but you could hear as footsteps drew closer to your side and a rough hand gently brushed the hair from your face. “It’s fine if you love them, Commander, though it would paint you in a less than positive light with your superiors.”
The other man said nothing, choosing to remain silent as his companion of sorts amused himself with your soft strands of hair. “Though I don’t suppose they remember who you are to them. Such a shame. The High Commander of Niflheim still enamored with his childhood love.” There was a pause and a brief chuckle. “How poetic. Two pairs of star-crossed lovers. Yourself and Y/N… as well as Prince Noctis and Lady Lunafreya.”
“None of us are dying.” Ravus, you had deduced, denied vehemently, voicing rising the slightest with a hiss.
You could almost hear the smirk on the other man’s face. “Of course not.” and you felt the man’s gaze on your form. “But love doesn’t prevent the death of those we love.” The rough hand halted over your closed eyes, and the man bent down to whisper in your ear, “Isn’t that right, Little Light. Now sleep and heal. Your beloved Prince awaits.”
The name of the man above your form suddenly came to you as you lost yourself to unconsciousness again.
Ardyn Izunia.

The Morning After the Invasion
Cor held onto the small amount of hope as he left the remains of Insomnia after leaving the corpse of his once beloved king. The Immortal Shogun had buried so many comrades, had seen just as many civilians perish as well, and despite this, there was slight happiness and hope the perhaps, you’d been able to escape the city with Lunafreya. Cor’s light blue eyes sparked with a fierce will to find his Prince, but that spark also existed because he wanted, no, needed for you to be alive. That you had left the city alive, and that he hadn’t left you to die alone. As one of the people who helped raise you, Cor couldn’t stand the thought of you, with your bright eyes, left to rot somewhere in the city, the light leaving your eyes.
Perhaps… if the Crownsguard were not ordered to patrol the exterior of the Citadel during the attack, things could have been different.
No. Cor shook his head in denial, attempting to banish all the negative and morbid thoughts from his mind as he made his way out of the city on the highway, which had long since crumbled from the relentless battle between the city’s Old Wall and Niflheim’s Diamond Weapon. Far enough away, from the ruined city, Cor allowed himself to turn and mourn the lives lost, blue eyes taking in the fire and rubble. Only after several moments of silence, did Cor allow himself to turn, taking out his cell phone and dialing a number, holding the small device to his ear.
The phone only has time to ring for a few moments before the recipient picks up.
“H-Hello? Cor?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two Days After the Fall of Insomnia, Ten Days Before the Death of the Oracle
Ardyn smirked in amusement as he sauntered his way through the metal door leading to your room. It had been two days since the High Commander had taken you in for medical treatment, and every single instance that Ardyn found himself in your room, Ravus was by your side. If the Tenebrae Prince was not holding your hand while reading through paperwork, then he would be working at the desk only a few feet away. Somewhere deep down, Ardyn could feel the bitterness creep at his heart. It must have been nice, to be so close to the person you loved. But the cursed man shook his head. There was little use in mourning the past.
The Forsaken King plastered a smug grin across his visage before he gave a delighted hum, allowing the busy High Commander to finally take notice of his presence. “My, my, I never see you outside of this room, Commander. It couldn’t hurt to let them leave your sight now and again. I’m sure the poor thing would be disturbed to wake and see your frightening face.”
It greatly pleased Ardyn to tease the ever serious High Commander, but he often grew tired of the lack of response from Ravus, forcing a pout to the playfully malicious man’s face, as he made his way closer to where you lay, still unconscious. “You keep watch over them so diligently.” the Forsaken King tilted his head to stare inquisitively at your sleeping face, auburn hair shifting with the movement, “Though you hate Lucians with such passion.” When the platinum blonde haired man only continued to ignore him, Ardyn extended a hand to play with your hair, “Ah, but I thought that you would be more concerned with saving your dear sister… perhaps this one here… is a distraction.” And in a split second, his hand shifted and tightened.
~~~~~~~~
You’d never been woken up so harshly before, eyes snapping open, already wide and bulging with panic at the pain blooming in your chest and the tightness around your throat. No sound reached your ears as you struggled, lifting your hands to grab at your attacker’s. There was an indistinct yelling, but the man above you only grinned eyes shining maliciously as he only tightened his grip. From the side, a man in white roughly shoved at your attacker before drawing a rapier to attack the man. To your alarm, the man above you easily blocked your protector, sending a shock of black and purple-ish energy to knock the man in white back. When his attention was back to you, you took notice that the man above you now had a demonic look about him, his sclera completely black.
Your eyes widened, horrified, alarmed, as you stretched out your dominant hand, calling to your greatsword. In a rain of blue sparks, your blade materialized, its handle a familiar weight as you swung sideways with all your might. Just when the sharp edge was about to slice into your attacker, he smirked and disappeared in a burst of purple wisps. Coughing roughly from the sudden ability to breathe, you sat up and slumped forward, unarmed hand coming up to gingerly touch the bruises forming on your neck. Your eyes wanted to close from the exhaustion and pain, but stubbornly remained open, vigilant and observing your surroundings. The room decor screamed Niflheim, what with its metal decor and boring design, and it caused no sense of relaxation for you. For now, you paid no attention to the man in white, who was cautiously making his way to you, though you could distinctly make out the humming of an engine. Perhaps you were on an airship?
The space beside you sank from a sudden weight, and your vigilant gaze shift ever so slightly to take in the white garb and purple armor, rapier sheathed, and Magitek arm, before sweeping up to look into eyes of blue and purple. Worry, joy, uncertainty. That was what you saw in the man’s eyes, though the rest of his face betrayed nothing. You knew him, though through the pain you struggled to remember his name. “You…” The adrenaline had long since left your body, and suddenly your torso felt like it was on fire. You took a glance down to see bandages peeking out from under the greyish blue hospital gown.
“You should not strain your body, Y/N. For it still has much healing to do.” the man with platinum hair chided gently, gently taking a hold your hand with his metal arm as his other arm, one made of flesh, you observed, slowly wrapped around your back and guided you to lay on the bed once more. “Now rest, Little Light. Let your body heal the wounds that Glauca made. Let them vanish from your flesh to be never seen again.”
Little Light.
Glauca.
As if a torrent suddenly rained down upon you, you began to recall.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You could feel the life leaving you as you stubbornly stumbled forward, still intent on attacking the behemoth of a general in front of you. Nyx and Lunafreya had long since left the chamber, and to your shame, King Regis had long since passed on. But if the damage to your body could buy Lunafreya enough time to escape, then you would bear the pain. It was your calling, after all, to protect those who needed to be protected.
The greatsword in your hands collided with Glauca’s blade with a deafening clang though you weren’t strong enough to deflect, instead being thrown back a few feet as Glauca brought his sword down upon your torso yet again. By all means, you should have died by then, but Cor had given you a supply of Phoenix Downs to keep you going in emergencies. But before you could bring your last Phoenix Down out, Glauca charged you, and before you could move away, the blade had impaled itself through your flesh once more.
“I commend you for your bravery, Y/N Amicitia. It is a shame that you had to die for such a foolish cause.” Those were the only words Glauca offered before he pulled the blade from your body, allowing you to fall backwards with a resounding thud. “As a tribute to your will, I will let you die by the King’s side.” Were you lifted from the ground, you didn’t know. All the feeling in your body had since left, leaving only the cold. Before you knew it, all there was in that room, was silence.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Almost with agony, you clung at your breast, a phantom pain shooting through your torso as you recalled the blade piercing your body. And then, you remembered the warmth from the man who saved you, your hands finding their way to the man in white’s arm. When the man turned his head ever so slightly to look into your face, you knew this to be your savior. “Ravus.” his name left your lips in a plea, “I’m not… dead?”
There was a slight upturn of his lips as the Imperial High Commander answered in a near whisper. “No, Little Light. You are among the living, and you will not die so long as I live.”
A low whimper left your lips as you closed your eyes, allowing the tears gathered to fall. Stubbornly, you pulled Ravus’s arm closer, burying your face into the warmth. And despite the fact that you knew him to despise Lucians, you begged. “Don’t leave me, Ravus. Please. Don’t let the cold take me again.”
How far you must have fallen in Ravus’s eyes. A proud Crownsguard member and a Shield to the King, yet here you were, pathetically clutching onto his arm.
And yet… to your surprise, the weight on the bed shifted, and suddenly you were surround in warmth. You hesitated in looking up, but when you felt another arm wrap around your body, pulling you close to a firm chest, you couldn’t dismiss the urge. For once, when you look into Ravus’s face, you see not a passive mask, but expressive eyes and a stubborn frown. It was a look you were familiar with in your childhood, vaguely remembering someone named Rae looking at you the same way. “My Little Light… the darkness and the cold will never take you again.”
There it was again, that nickname. Little Light.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
12 Years Ago
You watched sadly as Noctis left the room, yelling back that he would see you later in the day. Was it wrong that you felt a burst of tightness in your chest whenever you saw him leave? Was it wrong that you wished that you were as important as Lunafreya was to Noctis? Was it wrong that while your best friend smiled cheerfully after all the tragedy that befell him, you could only look on in the background? Forgotten? When they went off to play, neither ever invited you.
At the age of eight, all you wanted was companionship. And yet the one you counted on to provide that companionship had abandoned you. At age eight, you couldn’t hate, but the jealousy left you hollow, empty, as you roamed the halls of Fenestala Manor, its ancient stone architecture like something out of those old stories that Gladio would read Iris. It was so quiet, as you walked through the ancestral home of the Nox Fleurets, sniffling and trying to hold in tears as you blindly went, not noticing the figure following behind you.
Perhaps it was the whispering and staring of everyone that you came across, but you didn’t stop walking until you found a secluded corner on the direct opposite side of the manor, where the bridges were slightly older, and where it seemed, less people frequented. In this seemingly secluded part of the manor, you allowed yourself to crumble to your knees, tears sliding down your cheeks as you let the loneliness consume you.
The trip to Tenebrae was your father’s idea. Thinking that Noctis might need a friend with him in Tenebrae. But to think that this would be the opposite of the fun that your father intended had never occured to you. As a result, you didn’t know how lonely it would be to be in a foreign land as your friend left you alone.
This wasn’t fun.
It wasn’t fun being left out.
It wasn’t fun being pushed aside.
It wasn’t fun to be replaced.
It wasn’t fun to be forgotten.
And perhaps, that was what hurt the most. Perhaps that is what gave you cause to find the darkest place in Tenebrae imaginable. Perhaps that is the reason that those tendrils of black and purple found you so easily. That the Scourge tugged at the darkness within you. Beckoning you, a spiral of darkness that ached to corrupt. And how you longed to give in.
But just when you were about to stretch your hand out and welcome that seductive force, you suddenly found yourself surrounded in warmth. “Little Light, do not go quietly unto the darkness. Do not let its seductive poison take you. Do not let that pure light within you extinguish.”
You didn’t recognize the voice from the form behind you, but could tell that the light coming from them scared off the mysterious black and purple tendrils. The dark presence had whispered promises of companionship. That it would be your friend. That it would take the pain in your chest and make it disappear. That you wouldn’t be alone any longer. Desperately naive in your loneliness, you struggled against your savior, trying to reach out to the darkness nearly gone. “No!” You protested, your tiny arms reaching towards the darkness. “Don’t go! Don’t leave me alone!” It came out as a desperate sob, watching the darkness fizzle and fade in the presence of the light. Only when you could no longer see the darkness, the promise of companionship, did you collapse and give into the person hold you. “It hurts.” You shivered as the light retreated as well, “It’s so cold.”
“Y/N.” the person behind you called out, extending their light to you. “Little Light, the darkness is not your friend.”
The light was warm, but the darkness still promised companionship. “But it promised not to leave me…”
The arms retreated from around your form in favor of taking you by the shoulders and spinning you around. Taken by surprise, your teary eyes rose to meet with blue and purple, and you realized that the light was coming from the Prince of Tenebrae himself, Ravus Nox Fleuret. With a determined expression on his otherwise kind face, Ravus extended more of his light towards you, “Then I won’t leave you, Y/N.” It wasn’t a half-assed statement, but a promise, as he knelt before you. “I won’t let the darkness take you.”
Still untrusting, you shifted your eyes and bit your bottom lip in a pout, “Promise me?”
The Prince smiled sincerely, lips parting in a grin as he pulled your tiny form into a hug. “I promise.” When he felt you accept his light, Ravus sighed in relief, stroking your hair as he’d seen his mother do for his sister when she was sad. “Nothing will take that spark away from you, Little Light. I promise that so long as I live, you won’t fade.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tearfully, you clutched onto Ravus’s form, “Rae…” Years ago, Ravus had saved you from being taken by the Scourge. Now, twelve years later, he’d saved you again. And still, you couldn’t believe that you had forgotten about Ravus. “You kept your promise.”
The fallen Prince of Tenebrae stroked your hair affectionately as you fell back asleep, “So long as life exists within this breast of mine, you won’t fade, Y/N.”

Middlemarch: The Case of the Brotherhood [Chocobros/Reader]
In which Prompt, Ignis, Gladio, and Noctis learn of Reader’s death in Insomnia. Angst.
Masterlist Link
“In another life, I hope that things can be different.”
~~~~~~~~~
They had all been resigned for the worst when they heard of the destruction wrought upon Insomnia. They had felt the despair and horror as they viewed the burning city from the clifftop afar. Each of them felt the terror that those within the city felt. The boys… no… they were men… the men had left their families behind only a few days prior. And now, the idea that they would see their families again was bleak and unlikely.
While Prompto and Ignis were worried about their parents, they had very little to fear because only they were involved with the Crown. Gladiolus and Noctis, however, had much more to fear. For Noctis, he was primarily worried about his father, King Regis, the main target for Niflheim’s invasion. His father had seen him, seen them all off with a smile, and now, there was the possibility that he could be dead. But as much agony as the thought was, it was nothing compared to what Gladiolus felt. The twenty two year old man was nearly crippled with worry, not only for his youngest sibling, Iris, but for his father and Y/N, the two individuals that were at the forefront of the Niflheim’s assault.
And then, the men were tasked to meet up with Cor Leonis, who had managed to escape the fallen city. Despite the fact it shouldn’t have, the meeting with Cor gave Gladiolus a great hope. As he was Y/N’s partner in the Crownsguard, Gladiolus reasoned that if Cor managed to escape Insomnia, then Y/N would have as well.
But it had been an emotional meeting. The most important task at hand was to ensure that Noctis inherited his title and crown, and was aware of his duty. Only a few days ago, everything had been so light hearted and happy, and suddenly the weight of the throne sat on the young Prince’s shoulders, and the heavy burden to support him fell on his friends. But once the King to be had accepted his role and the power that it came with, they all had to know.
“Marshal, did Y/N happen to make it out of the city?” it had been Prompto to ask the question. The men had all expected for their friend to be waiting within the Royal Tomb with Cor, and yet, when they entered the stone chamber, they were only greeted with one. Ignis and Gladiolus already had come to their own conclusions, but they needed to be sure. Though they were simply reluctant to hear of Y/N’s fate.
The Immortal Shogun cast his stormy grey eyes to the floor, something he rarely ever did. The older warrior remained silent, his lack of response being the only answer the men needed. “I’m sorry.”
“No…” Gladiolus moaned, distraught, falling to his knees as his fears were confirmed. His precious younger sibling… “Y/N…” a sob escaped the muscular man’s throat, choked and mournful. In his mind, he thought back to when he had left them in front of the Citadel, their smile as they promised to see him again. If he had known that that would be the last time he ever saw them… he didn’t know what he would have done.
Beside Gladio, Ignis lowered his gaze, silently mourning the death of a long-time and dear friend. The logical part of him reasoned that it was to be expected, being the personal guard of a king, but Y/N had been younger than him, had been a ball of support, understanding, and happiness. To have them ripped away from the living in such a violent way, no matter how honorable, it was a great loss to everyone who knew them. And although the tactician had expected this outcome, he slowly removed his glasses to shed a few tears.
“W-wha?” Prompto seemed absolutely shocked, he had very little to worry about prior to this revelation, but it suddenly felt like he’d been dropped head first into cold waters. “S-so they’re….?” the gunman swallowed audibly, his bottom lips trembling and eyes burning as he leaned against the walls of the Royal Tomb, legs unable to hold him up. Y/N and Prompto were like siblings, a great support for the only child of the Argentum family. The blonde’s tears ran down his face silently for a few moments before his boyish features scrunched up and an inconsolable sob escaped, loud enough to echo through the room. “Y/N…”
It took Noctis the longest to process Y/N’s death. Only moments prior, he’d been sobbing over the burden his father left him, and the loss of his only parent left. And now, to realize that he’d lost the person that was by his side since childhood. That he’d lost the person who had known him the most… it was almost incomprehensible. And while trying to hold back the burning in his eyes, the King to be asked with a crack in his voice, “How?”
Cor seemed to stand straighter, still sad from Y/N’s death, but looked proud. “I was not there to witness it, but I can speak with the utmost confidence that Y/N Amicitia died performing their duty to the best of their ability. The defense of the late King Regis in the face of General Glauca. They… Y/N died honorably, Your Majesty.”
“What’s the point of honor if they were going to die!” Noctis exclaimed, not really looking for a response from any of his companions. “Y/N was always so stubborn. Did they not realize that they were going to die fighting against Glauca?” The King to be’s face scrunched and a sob escaped, “Y/N promised.” Y/N’s smiling face flashed within the Prince’s mind, “You promised to stand by my side in Altissia, Y/N.”
Cor had done his mourning while holding Y/N’s dying body, but in the face of Y/N’s mourning friends, a deep shame overcame him. If only I had gotten to the King and Y/N faster.
Noctis continued to sob, feeling like his heart had been torn, an inescapable guilt falling around him. If only I had insisted that they come with us. If only I hadn’t yelled at Y/N all those months ago. If only…
The Prince could only sob, a rage and despair filling his body. Nobody could comfort him. Nobody would ever be able to comfort him. Because nobody could fill in the void that you left by his side; in his heart.
I kept going on and on about Luna whenever I was with you, selfishly, because I thought that you were always going to be in my life. And if I had been more understanding… more accepting… you’d still be by my side.
I’m sorry that I couldn't make you happy, Y/N. I hope that… wherever you are… you’ll find someone that’ll bring you happiness.
Middlemarch: The Case of Ravus [Ravus/Reader]
My love for Ravus is growing at the moment. It’s like... boundless right now. But anyways, this is another part of the Middlemarch aftermath.
Masterlist Link
-------------------------
“In another life, I hope that things could be different.”
He’d told himself that you were the enemy. That your act of kindness had been one done out of pity for his ruined body. But Ravus knew that it was a lie. He’d been lying to himself for twelve long years to know when he was trying to make himself believe in something. He was tired though. So tired of playing the fool. So tired of fighting with his sister. So tired of hiding from the truths placed right in front of his face.
So, Ravus knew when he saw your eyes, the look of begrudging compassion for the enemy, that you weren’t pitying him. You were genuinely concerned and for once, Ravus found himself torn as the Magitek soldiers escorted him onto an airship. You were his enemy. Would it be worth it to go back for you? Once he was patched up, Ravus already knew the answer and had his airship descend towards the Citadel once more.
Y/N Amicitia… one of the royal protectors.
Without a doubt, you were the Niflheim Empire’s enemy. But you didn’t deserve to die like the rest did. Maybe it was that sentiment, or paying you back for helping him, Ravus wasn’t sure, but his legs carried him through the wreckage of the once grand Citadel. He found you after Cor was forced to leave you, having to carry out his duty as Crownsguard and find Prince Noctis. Cor had laid your corpse down next to the king’s body, positioning you into a scene of peace.
But Ravus could see that you had not died in peace. Your body had been ravaged with the blade many times before you fell.
The High Commander didn’t know what he expected. That you would still be alive? That he could somehow spare you from death? It was foolish, Ravus laughed to himself in the silent room. “Woe to the ones who had loved you in life, Y/N Amicitia.” The former Prince of Tenebrae knelt to the floor, uncaring that the blood might stain his robes as he gently cradled your body with his right arm. He would miss the sight of your eyes.
Ravus had known you since you were children, a time you had long forgotten. The former Prince had met you prior to the Imperial invasion of Tenebrae. You were young at the time, but your eyes had always fascinated the platinum blonde boy. Even as a young child, you had a great determination to protect those you loved and to extend a hand towards those you believed deserved your company. And now, he would never see those eyes full of determination again.
He didn’t cry outwardly, but Ravus bowed his head and lamented. “Woe to the ones who love you even in death.”
If only he’d tried harder in stopping them. If only he’d tried harder to save them. If only...
“Another life, where I could be with you all. Together. Happy. But thank you… for loving me.”
Middlemarch: The Case of Cor [Cor/Reader]
My apologies for not updating the past few days. So several of you messaged me and asked what everyone’s reactions would be of learning of Y/N Amicitia’s death. So I present to you, a series of posts about the canon aftermath of Middlemarch. Each post (300 words or more) will be about someone still alive after Reader’s death, who knew/loved the reader in some way.
Masterlist Link
---------------------------
“In another life, I hope that things could be different.”
It had been Cor who found your body first. He had been outside the Citadel when the attack happened and had been fighting his way through the warzone of a building in order to get to the treaty room. As his partner, the two of you always kept track of each other with trackers, yours on a charm bracelet, and his on his belt buckle. Cor knew that you would do everything you could to keep the king safe, so wherever you were, the king would be too. So he followed the tracker to your location with a sprint.
But he had been moments too late. Only landing at the bottom of the emergency elevator just in time to see Glauca leave the room. The first thing Cor saw after, was the King’s still form laying in the center of the room. King Regis eyes lacking the sparkle that was present when he was alive, they looked towards something. No. Cor thought his head whipping to the left, They can’t be. It was one thing to fail his duty to protect the King. A source of helplessness and failure. But it was another to see his young partner’s battered form, slowly dying, unable to do anything but look at him.
You weren’t going to live. You and Cor both knew that. But neither of you wanted it. No. You had too many regrets. And Cor didn’t want someone so young dying.
But there was nothing either of you could do. Cor could only hold you in his arms and watch with a pained expression as you rest your head onto his chest and slowly closed your eyes.
Cor knew it was futile to beg you to open your eyes once more. The Immortal Shogun had seen too much death to even hope for such a miraculous thing. But even if he’d seen upwards of a hundred of his comrades die in front of him, and as much as he’d like to believe that he’d grow unfeeling, he was far from it. No. Each death hurt more and more. But somehow your death had been worse.
And when your eyes closed, your heart ceased to beat, Cor had no control of himself as he let out a great sob. And for the first time in many years, Cor Leonis cried.
“Another life, where I could be with you all. Together. Happy. But thank you... for loving me.”
REGARDING REQUESTS FOR ME TO DO FOLLOW UP FICS/HEADCANONS FOR SOME OF MY STUFF (e.g. Middlemarch, Ravus-fics/HCs, etc)
~ Yes, I will be writing follow ups for them, but they will come in time, k?
Aww! Thanks, dear! I’m glad that you like it all! And have a great day as well!! :3
Lol, then I consider it a job well done. Don’t worry, we’re all welcoming here, in Ardyn Hell. We have the handsome devil himself, melodrama for days, and a life-time supply of dry humor. Thank you, dear!
Oooh that... well... the second part is coming... but I won’t be content until I’ve made it longer than the first chapter... that and I’ve been trying not to make it too cliched... so the second part has been rewritten several times already.
Thank you! I kind of think that Wrench is a bit spiteful at everything, except the innocent... but still, children can be much crueler than adults at times, so there’s still caution on Wrench’s part.
