So I've previously theorized about alternian population control and how they stagger generations so everyone in a generational cohort reaches maturity at the same time and can thus be collected and shipped off to join the fleet simultaneously.

I originally thought it would make more sense to only do one generation at a time, to make it easier to be absolutely certain you've rounded everyone up and no one is still hiding out on the planet who shouldn't be, and this isn't disputed in Homestuck proper.

But Friendsim made it dubiously canon that trolls of different age groups are on the planet simultaneously-- it's discussed explicitly in Chahut's volume, since she's on the verge of shipping out and is upset about leaving Amisia, one of the younger trolls, behind. This puts a bit of a hole in the idea of efficient population control and makes the feasibility/believeability of keeping adults off the homeworld a lot more shaky.

But either staggering generations or allowing spread out, semi random hatching instead of planned generations becomes much less of a problem if you're planning to drop a bioweapon on the planet in a couple of decades anyway. It's not like they're going to be wringing their hands over killing the stragglers that weren't quite old enough for the final draft.

Like remember how Aradia's main hobby was digging around in ruins, and it's not really framed as being something usual? Like this is a normal hobby to have. There's just a proliferation of ruins all over and some material benefit to poking around in them. Which is where they found the SBURB source code if I recall correctly, and weren't super surprised to find the code for a full video game down there.

So, if we accept this headcanon, alternia is a veritable palimpsest of ruins on ruins, as every few decades everyone living on the surface dies, and a new generation of feral children has to rebuild everything from what was left behind.

Frankly, this goes a long way to explaining how technology can advance on the homeworld at all, given anyone old enough to be researching and inventing new tech is shortly to be shipped off world. Think about what it means for there to be No Adults ever on the planet. There's no one passing down technology, there's no one passing down *culture,* except as kidlore.

Imagine if the entire history and culture of your species was delivered to you piecemeal in the oral tradition of those songs about killing Barney the Dinosaur and "I heard *insert celebrity here* got a rib removed so they could suck their own dick."

Yes, there's schoolfeeding to handwave how they all have a shared language and understanding of the system they live in, but the little that's said about it implies all the trolls in homestuck proper were already *done* with their education at 13. Karkat is not worried about his homework. And it's in the obvious best interests of the empire to keep people as uneducated as possible.

I also love this because it becomes a direct fuck you to one of my biggest pet peeves with post apocalypse type stories (Fallout, Stargate, anything where people get literally bombed back to the stone age) where they establish that it is hundreds of years since the apocalypse happened and the previously high tech civilization... is barely agrarian.

(in the case of fallout I personally attribute that to the entire population of the wasteland having massive lead poisoning, but that's a different rant.)

Like I get that the fantasy of the post apocalypse is supposed to be about a guilt free way to restart civilization from scratch, but too many people seem to think that's what would actually happen, instead of a intentionally contrived plot device to allow for specific themes.

You're not building a civilization from scratch, is what I'm saying. They don't need to progress through the whole tech tree from square one. They just have to rebuild what was already there. The post apocalypse is not dropping cave men into Terra Nullis. It's the survivors of a hurricane crawling out from under the rubble of their flattened town and getting to work rebuilding things.

The point is, regardless of the scale of the disaster, if there are survivors, and also ruins as modern and intact as like, the sunken mall in Darya's volume of Friendsim? They would absolutely be back to roughly the same level of technology fairly quickly, with the primary bottleneck being not knowledge but infrastructure. All well and good to have the technology for the internet, still going to take a long ass time to lay cable, build satellites ect ect enough for it to have widespread use.

This is mitigated somewhat by the fact that they have construction drones that are fast and adaptable enough to build architecturally sound (ish) structures to meet the specific requests of literal babies raised by literal wolves, limited only by castebased resource allocation restrictions.

So they get back up to roughly modern day tech, then pretty much everyone but a handful of jades fucks off to space and they drop a bioweapon to cull whoever remains, with the exception of said jades, who are effectively in bomb shelters deep in the brooding caverns. The jades hatch a new generation of trolls, who scavenge the knowledge of the previous generations from the ruins. A few decades later, they're basically back to where they were before, and can continue to advance things for a little while before getting cleared out again.

Honestly, I was expecting this to break things in an interesting way, but instead it actually kind of *fixes* a lot of random holes in the canon...

WHY HELLO MUTUAL IN MY INBOX, it is actually nice to receive things, but only now do I seem to find enough executive function to pull together a response. (tomorrow I start writing my first holiday letter to friends in like a decade, I'm not even kidding)

💖 What made you start writing?

hmm. Do I rules-lawyer this? How far back do I go. Because I've been writing expressively in one way or another very nearly since I could hold a pen. Motivations probably ranged from exploring early interests (wildlife, aerial battles) to sci-fi/fantasy OCs to collaborative post-by-post silliness of the kind we see here on Tumblr all the time. Plays, poetry, fiction. Attempts at more serious blogs. I am all about the mad wordz. You could stop doors with printouts of my emails to friends.

What made me start writing fanfic was that when Homestuck -- maybe not the first media of which I could say I was a fan, but the first for which I considered myself belonging to a fandom -- ended in 2016, I saw immediately that the main source of material for my voice acting blog (entitled, as you can see, "One Man Homestuck") had reached its limits. I had at best lukewarm ambitions for a truly solo dub of the entirety of Homestuck, and I found it hard to gel with several VA collaborations to that point. These days, of course, I could always just offer to podfic my lovely mutuals' fics...

Anyway, so Homestuck had [S] ACT 7 go up in April 2016. While I was wondering what to do with myself after that, I saw a post go up about the Ladystuck Remix Challenge 2016 -- my first encounter with a fic exchange. I liked the premise of using someone else's fic as a prompt, as an amusing exercise in constrained form. So I got myself an AO3 account, threw up two short VA intro scripts I had written for Jade and Terezi as qualifying works, and then wrote How Your Other Quarter Double-Dies -- which I can't say was what I had been expecting to write, but which ended up being stacks of fun. For extra credit I did The Cafe Mocha Caper which was a stretch for my powers at the time but I can at least say it was ambitious!

And then the rest has been history. My still-in-progress longfic Rose: Remember has been going from around the same time, and while I enjoyed Ladystuck it's this fic that seems to be my big Homestuck legacy. <kermit-flail waves to @laurasauras, @katreal-fic, @hussianphilosopher>

Oh man! I had forgotten about this one completely -- so maybe to say it's "in progress" is a bit much, but I like the concept. Premise is a peek into the kinder, gentler dreams of some of the Friendsim trolls which, unfortunately for them, are no more than that. A sampler:

"Now, you may remember that last week," Ardata intones for the grubcam's benefit, "Mashya and I brought this poor abandoned lopwing in from the sun's searing heat. We found him half-culled in the dumpster behind our hive, his ribs kicked in and a wing slashed. And it annoys me greatly to think someone, anyone, would have done this anywhere even near here." She crouches down to join her charge in the cam's frame. "How could they! This precious boy! Who knows whose lusus he could have been!" Throughout her patter, Ardata feels the palmhusk in her trouser pocket shudder with the stochastic rhythm of Chittr notifications. She'll have to take a few of those later, since they're streaming live and the chance for her viewers to interact with the rescue beasts is part of the maverick appeal of her channel. There are still a few haters who still preferred the old times when the den was a dungeon, when the floor was slick with blood, when you could smell the suffering hanging in the dank air even through the remote link. Most of them are ignored, while a few persistent hecklers are derided or quickly shouted down. She's not quite as popular as she once was, but her new brand has a persistent counterculture staying power she would never have guessed at before Mashya arrived. Ardata purses her lips to mimic the lopwing's squeaking call, and the wounded animal hops over to close the few feet of remaining distance. Her rustblood assistant silently zooms the grubcam's view in as she gently pulls one iridescent wing open. The lopwing flinches and its eyes widen, but it allows examination of its wing's torn surface -- a helpful touch from another waiting aide. She knows she couldn't do this without him, even if she can't formally acknowledge his contribution. The wing is still a mess, the ragged edges of the membrane still crudely stitched together with silk thread. But by turning it into the light, she can see that the nearby elements have begun to revascularize, which may in time knit up the great scarred slash. She points this progress out to her fans. In another three weeks, the lopwing might be able to take short flights again; a week after that, perhaps it will finally be able to outrun the predating barkbeasts and cholerbears, and can be safely released. Ardata's palmhusk buzzes again and she fishes it out, throwing her hair over her far shoulder with an artfully careless toss of her head. "Anything you'd like to tell our little guest? Let's see." She frowns, seeing no text immediately apparent in the comment box. A quick double-tap highlights what was written: What exquisite cruelty. How, exactly, will this once-wild animal last more than fifteen seconds out in nature again? Your ministrations, and those of your misguided partner in crime, have rendered it unable to survive outside; you have merely drawn out its demise. And finishing: You sick, sick monster. I approve.

OK SO FIRST OFF ALL OF IT IS A COMPLETE ACE ATTORNEY REFERENCE AND I FUCKING LOVE IT. and galekh's voice was genuinely hot so thats a +1. tagora was such a BITCH like he is so i love him even more. and TYZIAS OMGG she is our favorite mentally unstable troll. and her girlfriend is also cool i didnt pay much attention to her the entire route. and tagora swore like a buncha times here so someone needs to remind him of the swear jar he fukin keeps somewhere. Speaking of the Meat/Candy timeline not making sense, why didn't Rose and Jade simply ask Kanaya if they could have kids from the get-go?

Trolls have two quadrants best suited for bucket-filling after all, so it's highly likely that someone's Kismesis is another's Matesprit and vice versa. The idea of your lover sharing an intimate quadrant with someone else wouldn't get a Troll's hackles raised because it's the norm in Troll society. Kanaya's also been shown caring for grubs she didn't directly fill pails for either, ergo she probably wouldn't walk out on them if she didn't contribute to the process.

So, Jade and Rose not asking the person who's most likely to be comfortable with polyamorous relationships, if they could have kids in the first place, doesn't make sense! I can let Jade's ignorance on the topic slide; the Retcon left her all alone on the Battleship and she was mindcontrolled/asleep for the rest of the campaign. Of course she wouldn't know the intricacies of Troll culture and their dating practices, no one taught her them! Unlike Jade though, Rose should've known better.

And why...the hell...did Rose have to carry the kid for 9 months...if ECTOBIOLOGY EXISTS THERE?! The Meat timeline even included the equipment for Gog's sake, it's frustrating that the writers forgot that fast! If they wanted to explore Rose's idea of motherhood, Jade's perpetual loneliness, and the nuances of the Troll quadrants-- why did it have to be with a flippant and trashy cheating reveal? Soap Operas have more cohesive and respectful character drama than this.

WhatPumpkin really forgot that ectobiology exists. I could understand if Hussie or WhatPumpkin made some bullshit excuse that troll biology and human biology are unable to mix due to biological difference. Which may make others question how high tech would Earth C can be if spin-offs like Hiveswap and Hiveswap Friendsim, shown trolls are technologically advanced. They literally made a machine that can heal a person's bones and muscles in an instant. Lanque is an example of a perfectly transitioned female to male troll without issues. Something like surgery to be able to mimic a human's reproductive organs would not be far off. Either way, a troll and a human hybrid COULD be possible. But I guess it's not enough for Kanaya or Rose to have their own kid. They got to adopt one who happens to be cerulean and named after Kanaya's OLD CRUSH VRISKA, showing she still wants the bad girl troll even after marrying Rose. We got to make Kanaya still obsess over her despite that her arc was suppose to be that she would GET OVER VRISKA AND MOVE ON TO SOMEONE BETTER THAT WILL TREAT KANAYA BETTER. I don't know why Andrew Hussie or WhatPumpkin are doing cheating and infidelity in Epilogues and Homestuck^2's main conflict for drama. Because it's seems like everyone is fucking someone else despite they have a lover or they are married. John leaves his wife Roxy and fucks with Terezi, Jade and Dave are married but Dave leaves so he can fuck with Karkat, Terezi now has John's dead corpse but is now flirting with a Rosebot who had abandoned her wife Kanaya and is now fucking with her and Ultimate Dirk, Jake/Jane/Gamzee, and Aradia ghosted Sollux (AGAIN) to fuck around with Davebot. It's someone NTR fetish at this point and I hate hate HATE it so much.

Personally I like Elwurd and Lynera the best for reasons that are definitely not related to projection. Least favorite is hard for me to pin down because I've spent so much time thinking about these folks and trying to expand on areas where they're less developed. Love me some clowns, I've always had an appreciation for unhinged characters, but my absolute favorites are Chahut and Karako. Least favorite… I dunno, there aren't really any that I dislike in FS? In Homestuck in general I took personal issue with the Zahhaks because this is not how I want Sagittarius to be represented WHY -Hal Elsen, voice actor

I like Elwurd, Daraya, Lanque, Mallek, Tagora, Polypa, and Skylla. I'm gay. Not a huge fan of Zebruh, but damn do I love voicing him, and also not a giant fan of like. Fozzer, idk why. I'm a bad VA so I haven't played the game yet. -CL, voice actor

If we're gonna go with Friendsim- Elwurd, Chixie, and Tyzias all appeal to my typical Character Likes. very fascinated by jane maryam and how her being a jadeblood connects to her relation to the condesce. does it make her more under the influence of the idea that she’s a part of a normal and completely fine institution or does it make her more aware of the horrors?

ok so technically within the universe of unstuck jane maryam lives on beforus so she would be under empress feferi and NOT the condesce and none of this would be applicable but it’s interesting enough to me to entertain it so consider this like. non-canon to the AU itself but it WOULD be canon if it could be. do you get me

anyway mary jane is a very straight-laced and studious girl that is incredibly preoccupied with being “the best”. not necessarily in relation to other people she doesn’t particularly care about her reputation or whatever (beyond the normal desire to like. have friends and not be an outcast) but she’s very focused on being like. i guess “her best self” would be as close as i could get but it’s not really in a cool self esteem boosting girlboss way it’s a kind of dirk-strider-esque drive to achieve peak efficiency and optimal performance in everything she does (particularly in academic pursuits) and in many ways it would be BETTER if she was competing with people other than herself because it would at least give her something or someone else to engage with instead of locking herself in her bedroom and going insane all the time

she’s a very strict person especially with regards to herself and her own behaviors and will follow rules even if she doesn’t personally agree with them just because of the simple fact that they ARE rules. she might try to exploit loopholes or argue the “it’s a suggestion, not a direction” viewpoint but by and large she is not a rebellious or particularly outspoken girl; she follows orders and keeps to herself sometimes to the point of detriment, and refuses to express any thoughts she personally deems as “out of line” in any way to others which as you can image is doing WONDERS for her mental well-being (< it is not)

in terms of the alternian regime and her place in it i would put her as like. a darkleer type, i guess. just from a jadeblood’s position instead of a blueblood’s. she doesn’t feel any particular fanatical loyalty to the empire (especially as a midblood) but will continue to follow the rules it’s set for her until she literally physically cannot continue to justify them, which is a breaking point that takes a LONG time to come to. she is going to do a lot of incredibly questionable things that she KNOWS are questionable before she realizes that she has to stop

she’s still quite skeptical much like canon jane but it doesn’t really serve her well as a troll because instead of being skeptical towards the empire she ends up more often being skeptical towards revolutionary philosophies LOL. she isn’t being literally actually physically brainwashed/subliminally influenced the way she was as a human with the tiaratop, it’s more like. she’s incredibly susceptible to the general societal brainwashing that all alternian kids are subject to (and actually from what we see in the friendsims jadebloods are probably subjected to MORE of this than the average troll anyway). not in a “there is no war in ba sing se” way but more of a “there is absolutely so much war in ba sing se but they soldiers are telling me to look away and move along so i guess i’ll follow the directions of the authority figures” way

she’s also an academic with a focus on history which on alternia is basically just like. a constant never ending stream of imperial propaganda. that mixed with her mental state becoming increasingly fragile due to her obsession with personal perfection generally leads to her being less likely to even bother questioning the condesce’s regime. kramer voice it’s like perfect blue in here

tl;dr the condesce would have no direct influence on jane but jane’s personality, personal struggles, and position in alternian society would combine to create someone that is very easy to manipulate for a very long time if you’re careful about it

elaborate on autistic lanque pls 🤲

oh, don’t mind if i do. before i begin:

this contains some major spoilers for hiveswap: act 2, and some minor spoilers for lanque’s friendsim routes(but those have been out for like three years).

disclaimer: i don’t care if you disagree, i’m not claiming this as canon, i am autistic and projecting.

now that that’s out of the way.

point one: possibly the most important thing to note is that lanque is incredibly good at masking. given this quote from his wiki:

“Lanque's writer has stated that both of his Friendsim routes are heavily exaggerated for comedic purposes, with one being more true to his actual personality. As shown by his attitude in Hiveswap: Act 2, it's heavily implied his NSFW route is the truer one. However, this leaves his personality to be drawn from his Friendsim routes to be dubious for readers to interpret what the actual "balance" of his personality is.”

the actual tweet has been deleted, but one of the assumptions that can be made from this is that both the sfw and nsfw routes are, in some way, true to his personality. this would mean that he is actively and drastically changing the way he interacts with the people around him according to the setting, or through imitation. effectively this would make him a social chameleon, another thing often attributed to autistic masking.

and the idea of constant masking fits, given his whole Thing- he’s already being set apart from all the other jades by his transness, and from how he acts in act 2(this will be mentioned later), he doesn’t quite enjoy this difference being pointed out. it would make sense that, given the opportunity to hide something that would lead to more attention(maybe more accurately, attention he doesn’t like), he would take it. this being said, i don’t think lanque sees his transness or unchecked neurodivergence as a bad thing- rather, he sees how other people treat him for it as annoying and something to avoid.

point two: lanque seems to have a very strange range of emotions. while he usually presents as very calm, when he does express true emotion(like when he’s caught off guard by the reader shouting for bronya), its often overstated, and in some cases, a total non sequitur from what came before. the way he reacts in the valid ending scene specifically reminds me of times when i have been startled out of masking- especially since he goes from formal prose straight to “what the fuck, dude?”

the only time he expresses emotions neurotypically is when he’s doing it through another medium(his poetry in the sfw route).

point three: lanque repeatedly is shown to not be the best at conveying or reading tone.

at the start of his sfw route, lynera ends up rambling on about something or other. it’s immensely awkward.

lanque doesn’t register it as such, and while this could just be attributed to sfw lanque’s overexaggerated kindness, i raise you: i’m building a case here, let me twist my evidence.

in his nsfw route, we have some gems such as:

lanque is shown to use a tone entirely unfitting of the words that he’s saying, and its specified that this demeanor is nearly indistinguishable from how he was acting before. could this just be an example of professional bitching? yes. play on my court for a second, though

and perhaps my favorite example of lanque totally misreading tone/a situation in general(which is both the aforementioned act 2 scene AND an example of his abnormal reactions to things) is the scene where joey asks lanque about the hatched2dance magazine from lynera’s locker. immediately, he (incorrectly, and without much reason except prior experience) assumes that joey’s intention was to harangue him about being a male jadeblood.

after joey specifies what she meant, he refuses to respond until xefros tries to actually ask him about being a male jadeblood, and lanque tells them to fuck off. personally i think this is as close to embarrassment as lanque will willingly show in public

point four: lanque is Painfully straightforward. this is obvious in the everything about him, but best summed up with:

lanque sees no use in not just saying what he means, which often leads to him being(often rightfully) seen as a bitch. again, it’s hard to say things for certain with what little content there is, but i wouldn’t be surprised if some of the things he says- for instance certain parts of his calling out lynera(mostly the parts about her talking shit, not the parts where he’s outright insulting her) were just intended as honesty, rather than animosity. this is a common trait in autism, but i see a lot of neurotypicals look over it because it’s seen as rudeness. ultimately he still uses that honesty to be a bitch on purpose on several occasions, so don’t take this as me saying he’s free of flaws or whatever

another thing i like to point out, though admittedly it’s much more of a stretch, is this bit where lanque has to ask for specification when joey uses a less direct method of asking him what he thinks of the other jades:

point five: mildly connected to point four, lanque shows possibly one of the most out-there forms of rejection when it comes to social norms. he’s able to skate by in the wider lens of alternia because people of most castes participate in shitty parties, but doing it as a jadeblood gives it an entirely different context.

he also(and this is maybe half speculation, but let me be) seems to have issues sticking with quadrants as a rigid construct. when bronya says this to lanque:

many people took it as evidence that lanque was abusive to his partners. and if people want to hold that headcanon, i really don’t care, because it can be an accurate reading of how he is presented in the nsfw route specifically. my personal opinion, however, given that his personality is said to be exaggerated in these routes, is guided by this section from his sfw route’s poem:

i believe that lanque is just extremely prone to vacillation, because he doesn’t truly grasp why quadrants are divided in the way that they are, only that others “press” him to do the dividing. thats autistic attitudes towards social constructs baby

point six(and here’s where the trial spoilers come in): lanque has a very unusual way of solving problems, apparently. when confronted with the issue of his impending ordeals and the idea of having to spend his life as a celibate space nun, lanque’s solution is.... to attempt to join a boy band, using the chaos of the trial(that He caused by stealing the book) as his cover. when joey presents this theory to tyzias(a theory that lanque confirms is more or less correct before chucking joey off of the train), she responds with:

meaning that not only are his problem solving skills out of the box to joey, but to other trolls as well.

there’s also something to be said about how little he values personal space, but i’m wary of claiming that as an autistic trait of his, and if it is, he is very purposefully weaponizing it.

literally I was watching someone's playthrough of pesterquest as it was being released, and I almost finished it, but then I got spoiled for the fact that Ult Dirk shows up, and it totally knocked me off the wagon. like I've had it in my head that eventually I'll go watch Dirk's content, but it's been so long since I watched everything else... by this point it'd be kinda disjointed to even do that.

also, I was weirdly irritated by MSPAR in pesterquest? I found them so charming in hiveswap, because they were characterized as kind of a bumbling, overeager and well intentioned traveler that just wanted to help. but in pesterquest they get all know-it-all ish... it's reeeeeeally off putting. like I could forgive them being confused or disheartened, but they went a step too far and got all cynical and been-there-done-that, and gave a lot of advice that just wasn't good? as if they were some sort of expert or something. it makes pesterquest kind of irritating because you play as an irritating audience surrogate character who does shit that you don't actually want to do.

like, okay, Eridan's route, right? at the end, the advice MSPAR gave was basically "stop being an asshole" which is like... warranted and fair? but first of all, this Eridan needs different advice than homestuck's Eridan! and second, would a real asshole actually take advice like that? it's so... basic.

Eridan is a character that I'm not super attached to, but I get peeved when people get him wrong. in homestuck, the thing that Eridan needs, is to realize that if he wants something from another person, he has to try not to be a leech about it. everything is all about his perspective all the time. when he wants something, he'll ask, but if he doesn't get it, he'll whine and beg, and if people get mad at him for doing that, he gets all self deprecating and bemoans how hopeless his situation is, and how much everyone hates him. like he'll literally annoy one person into getting fed up with him, just so he can go cry to another person about his problems, and ask them for advice that he probably won't even take, because getting attention was the point, and this is technically what he wanted anyway. and the more people catch on and get frustrated, the more fuel he has for his "everybody hates me" pity party.

and the interesting thing about Eridan is that all of this probably comes from a real worry that nobody could like him, even if he tried. I mean, most of his friends are lower on the hemospectrum, and have a systemic reason to hold some sort of resentment towards him. so like, he probably likes Feferi because the two make an appropriate match class-wise... but he also probably likes her because she's his only friend that is more privileged than he is, so she can't hold his status against him.

also, pesterquest leans into that old fanon thing where Eridan is indiscriminately desperate and will date anyone. like... no! originally, Eridan specifically wanted to fill all of his quadrants! he wanted a matesprit (Feferi), a kismesis (Vriska), an auspistice (Kanaya), and a moirail (possibly Karkat). and not only that, but he wanted these specific people to fill these specific roles for him unconditionally and without conflict, in spite of their actual feelings. Feferi doesn't want to date him... she doesn't even really want to be his moirail because she's doing all the emotional labor and it's exhausting. and Kanaya had a red crush on Vriska at the time... the last thing she wants is to be auspistice-zoned! meanwhile, Vriska is becoming less and less interested in Eridan anyway because she's got her own unhealthy fascinations with certain people. so like, Kanaya wouldn't even be acting as a proper auspistice anyway... she wouldn't be helping to calm a volatile rivalry, she'd be trying to force a lackluster relationship to continue. that's like, the opposite of how it's supposed to be!

literally the only one of these that might've worked is Karkat as his moirail, because Karkat is amazing at giving advice, and dealing with difficult people's bullshit without getting sucked into too much drama. but like... that's probably the one relationship out of all of these that started from genuine charisma between two people, rather than Eridan deciding who he wanted to pursue based on a checklist of socially advantageous qualities. at least with that, it's implied that Karkat also likes talking to Eridan... like, both of them are getting something out of this. in all other cases, Eridan isn't even in it for the romance. he's in it to gain validation by living up to a societal standard.

it's only after our 12 trolls end up on the meteor after their SGRUB session that Eridan starts getting all weird about dating people other than the specific four he was already interested in. and that's specifically because there are now only 12 trolls left that exist. these people are the only ones left, so if he can't get a relationship to work with any of them, that's that. so basically, when pesterquest characterizes him this way, even though he still lives on a fully populated Alternia... why is he acting like that?

Eridan needs to learn how to actually put something into a relationship that he wants to get something out of. and to do that, he needs to believe that he has value beyond his status, and that it's possible for people to be motivated by more than class politics and spite. he treats people exploitatively because he expects them to try and exploit him just as badly... it's not just about fixing bad behavior. it's about him learning to put in work, and give another person reasons to like him, without feeling like a sucker for conceding any ground. the more defensive he gets, the worse he is.

and pesterquest messed up Jake's route too! what is it about hope players that stumps people like this?? I get that Jake is tricky, but jeez... I won't get into it as much, but Jake is always masking what he really feels, and the way his route handles him makes him seem like he's acting equally neutrally friendly to each of the other alpha kids. but then it implies that his true feelings are that he considers all three of his friends' romantic interest in him to be equally serious, and equally unwanted. that is... blatantly untrue. he knows Roxy might find him attractive but won't make a genuine move on account of Jane. she literally drunkenly told him so. and Roxy also drunkenly told Jake that Jane likes him. meanwhile, he also pretty much knows that Dirk had a crush on him when they were kids, but back then he kind of shut it down, or at least sent mixed signals, because he wasn't confident about having a crush on a boy. now Dirk himself is not confident that Jake actually likes him, and is trying to back off because he feels like his younger self was overly aggressive, but the AR is still as brazen as Dirk used to be when pursuing Jake, so it kind of undermines that attempt. still, Jake feels like he might've already come off poorly to Dirk. he does like him though... and he knows that Jane has a crush on him, and doesn't want to be the one who disappoints her, so he weasels his way out of addressing it. that is the deal with the alpha kids. not Jake just kind of bemoaning the fact that all of his friends are in love with him and he's not down for anything. so once again, we see a pesterquest route written on the basis of mistaken assumptions.

sorry for going on and on and on... I just find all of this so frustrating. half the characters are only the fan interpretations of themselves, and MSPAR sucks, and the meta is confusing, and... I wish it was good but it's not.

I love you for this ask anon, I never played friendsim but I did see a lot of people who tuned into all the friendsims express annoyance over the way Reader was portrayed in pesterquest. I can't even remember what happened in the Jake route bc I'm tired but it definitely could've been better.

Imo, best alpha kid routes go from: Roxy, Jane, Jake, and Dirk (half his route wasn't even dedicated to him lol rip)

thoughts on wanshi!

oh my god, i love wanshi so much. she’s def my second fave of all the trolls (daraya being first favorite but like cmon. that ones a gimme and doesnt count). wanshi in friendsim REALLY appealed to me because, it’s super hard to write kid characters, and even harder to write them with the right level of nuance. there’s a sweet spot of smart-naive that a kid wanshi’s age would fit into and i think her route nailed it perfectly. im just *holds her up* this is the best homestuck character

I don't want to sound harsh, but I dis agree a bit. Yes, not every troll from friendsim and hiveswap is good. But other are neat. Some made a bit simple and love this.

Also, Tyzias is best troll 4ever and she is my wife.

It would be a shame if Hiveswap suddenly gets cancelled as it's own its last legs.
