Last Tuesday in April
Hello again, cool cats and kittens! We’ve been busy around the ol’ homestead this week. The mister has eased into retirement like a boss and I think has surprised himself with how enjoyable he finds life out from under the stress of the corporate world. He started rushing around getting projects done and I had to remind him that there are no deadlines. We. are. not. in. a hurry. He’s about to learn how to live Nancy style. One of the projects he tackled was turning his office into a room where he can enjoy working on his photography and relaxing. I’ll probably need to sage that room to get the bad work ju-ju out, but it’s already looking better in there. Today we moved out his big work desk (it’s going on Facebook Marketplace) and painted two walls a color that he chose all by himself. I may have guided his hand a bit by handing him samples that seemed in keeping with what he said he wanted. He settled on the color Jasper Stone.
It looks great. I’m trying so hard not to tell him where I’d put things and how I’d arrange it all and what I’d put on the walls. This is his space and he didn’t butt in when I arranged my craft room. As long as he’s happy, I’m happy. That’s not his office in the photo, that’s just a picture of the wall color that I snagged from the Sherwin Williams site. I also finished my two dollar cabinet. I need to learn to quit while I’m ahead. I may have done too much to it. But I like foo-foo, and this is definitely Fancy Nancy style.
Well, that’s not a very flattering snap - in the garage surrounded by my mess. I’ll put her in place tomorrow and get a better photo. That one was taken from the garage door before I picked up my tools and called it a day.
When Mickey’s office is finished that will mean that the only room left to do is the master bathroom. I’ll probably paint the vanity in there, ideally get new flooring, and that’s about it. I’ve got some cute art on the walls already. the shower curtain is fine. I wouldn’t mind a couple new rugs, but all in all - it’s an okay room. The double vanity is huge, really long, lots of great space. BUT (and you knew there was a but), above that vanity is an enormous contractor grade mirror. Super ugly, but would be expensive and annoying to replace. I think I’ll ask Mickey to just frame it out with trim. If I paint the cabinets a warm off-white, use oil-rubbed bronze hardware, and then frame the mirror in a deep espresso...
If Mickey is reading this right now - sorry, honey. You knew I would get to that room eventually. He’s already replaced the faucets and they look fabulous, now the rest of the room has to catch up. In other news, I’ve got baby zinnias popping up, baby sunflowers, baby basil, and baby dill as well. JOY!! The beautyberry bush that I planted from a bare root shipment is putting out little green leaves and that excites me so much. I’m slowly turning this new patch of ours into the sort of haven that I need, and Mickey drove into Dover on Monday and picked up all of the stuff to install the fence that I’ve been begging for out by the tree line!
He’s conned Tyler into coming out and helping him get it built on the weekend of the 6th. Of course, that means there will probably be biblical rains that weekend. I hope not. That’s also Kentucky Derby weekend. Maybe I’ll win enough to pay for the fence. I’d probably have to bet more than $5. Speaking of the Edgewater folks, we had Little Miss all to ourselves for a sleepover last weekend. On Saturday we took her to the Earth Day celebration at Adkins Arboretum. They had tons of stuff for kids to do, live music, food, etc. I packed a picnic lunch for us and we hiked, played, ate, and had the best day. She wore her Wonder Woman costume (because, of course) and had her face painted like a butterfly (again, of course). She was very popular with the crowd and stole the heart of a little boy named William who enlisted her help in his search for dinosaur fossils. They were hilarious together.
Gee, doesn’t pack the same punch when you can’t see their sweet faces. The world would be better if we all behaved like kids - everyone is a potential friend and everything is fun. Another happy note - this afternoon a neighbor across the street came over and gave me crabs. Let me rephrase that. The lady across the street brought over some locally caught, already boiled in Old Bay, delicious Maryland crabs. Blough’s Seafood is just down the road from us and apparently they’ve got the best prices in the area. She’d picked up a bushel, had a big feast and wanted to share the wealth. Isn’t that nice?? I confess, while Mickey was upstairs taping off his office for us to paint I snapped off a claw and enjoyed the delicious crab meat inside. I could eat my weight in crab (and lobster, and shrimp), so that neighborly gesture was enormously appreciated. I’ll have to send some baked goods over or something. I think one officially becomes a Maryland resident when you have crabs in your frig. Kind of like Tennessee and the Moon Pie. Or moonshine.
That last photo reminds me that it’s nearly time for me to start dinner. I’ve got chicken thawed, but I’m pretty sure my main course will be crab tonight. Can you believe that Mickey doesn’t care for it? How have we lasted 41 years? He doesn’t like crab or lobster and I’m not a fan of biscuits or banana pudding. It’s like a mixed-faith marriage. Anywho, moving on. I’ll wrap it up and get busy with dinner. Meet ya’ back here tomorrow. I truly hope that you’re having a lovely day and that the spring weather in your neck of the woods is treating you kindly. Spring can be moody, but she’s an artist, isn’t she? Enjoy the process. Stay safe, stay well, spread some love. XOXO,
Nancy

The Exterior of the Beach Shack is Painted & Here's the Color We Chose!!
We are absolutely in love and this turned out better than we could have hoped for.
We bought this beach house at the end of May in 2022, and immediately saw the potential it had. We actually don’t even refer to it as a house, we usually call it a “shack” or “cottage” because it’s so small. Like, really small. Like, pictures don’t really convey the tiny size of it, but it’s so teeny and cute and we love it so much.
Anyway, when we bought the beach shack it looked like this:
And as of yesterday, this is what that same angle looks like:
The summer was spent demoing the exterior siding and installing new windows that PJ found on Facebook Marketplace a few years back for a steal. We adore the green color of the windows on the outside and knew they would look great with white paint for the exterior siding (because is there anything more charming than a white little cottage by the beach?)
So, we chose a paint color we’ve wanted to use for years. It’s a super creamy white that almost has almond undertones to it, and it’s called Aunt Betty’s China. It’s a match of Duron™ DCR101 NRH from Sherwin Williams if you’re curious on where to get it. We got it at the local Sherwin Williams and had them color match it there.
Here are a few progression photos of the beach shack from the same angle, which we’re officially calling Castaway Cottage:
We still have a ways to go, but the general look of the outside of the cottage is finished. There are plans for some kind of front porch and we’re going to be relocating all the bushes in the front so everything is nice and cleared. PJ also wants to add shutters and we’re going to redo the landscaping all together.
I was trying to capture the color accurately and I think the below photos do the best job of what it looks like in person. Aunt Betty’s China is just the perfect warm white and the way it looks on the board and batten with the green windows might be our favorite color combination ever.
This wide-angle shot makes the back of the house look a lot bigger than it actually is. See the little holes on the right? That’s where the outdoor shower will be! It’s already hooked up and working, but that was completed after these photos were taken.
This little cottage has come such a long way from last year. I am so glad it doesn’t look like this anymore:
I can speak for both of us when I say, I can’t wait for it to be finished and we stay here for the first time this summer!!

if i had a penny for every time i’ve heard a customer say “i’ve been painting for a living for [insert number of years]” and then immediately spout misinformation about paint, i’d be fucking rich. this is exactly the sort of smug, self-important contractor i HATE dealing with. like, sure, i get it, you think you know everything because you’ve slapped this stuff on walls for a while but i literally deal with the MANUFACTURERS of this shit and have done DIRECT comparisons between these products. Benjamin Moore isn’t going to reward you for shilling their massively overpriced paint
#dont get me wrong benjamin moore do make damn good paint but there's nothing Super Special about it lmao#any decent paint made with Hydrochroma colorant will give you the same fade resistance dude#also fwiw sherwin williams has a LIFETIME warranty on most of their products

I just want to make my home bright and colorful but also moody and romantic and im always torn
#like we’re painting the office a color called Black Fox which is kind of a dark grey-brown#super luxe and matches the brick wall perfectly#but meanwhile I’m planning on painting my kitchen cabinets like GREEN#not like a dusky green that’s trendy but like GREEN#(it’s the Sherwin Williams color Amazonite if that’s worth anything to you)#but anyway I’m worried the vibes are going to clash

Do you plan on painting anything in your new home? And if so, what colors do you have in mind?
We're painting everything because it's all white and Kris hates that 😂 But we actually started over the weekend and I'm in looooove with the color we're doing the great room. It's a really pretty gray green called Escape Gray from Sherwin Williams.
We're also doing wallpaper accent walls in most of the upstairs bedrooms. Kris is doing a brick wallpaper with a navy blue called Salty Dog in his home office, but I haven't decided exactly what I want to do with mine; I'm trying to decide between four different wallpapers 😅 And then in the little girl's room I want to do a woodland wallpaper and then a really subtle mauve. I'm super excited about it 🤗

Buying paint with my mom and struggling not to insist we paint the whole house in jewel tones. I know a whole wall of it would be super overwhelming but the little cards with like these rich but not too bright colors are like. They're objectively the best little card. Sherwin Williams amalfi...I'll never forget you

A New House
picture not mine
Pairing: Ashton Irwin/Reader
Words: 2968
Author's Note: This picture gives me very domestic!ash feels so that's what I basically provided. I find this super duper cute and again... It's been in my docs for quite a while. I hope everyone likes it. I'm really glad I'm getting into writing again. ❤
Morgan and I were walking down the downtown streets of LA, a couple of shopping bags in our hands as we walk towards Panera.
The phone in my pocket vibrates and I do my best to fish it out, the handles of the bags cutting into my wrist a bit. I click the home button, seeing a text message from Ashton and a smile comes to my lips.
Hey, beautiful. Can you come over after you're done with Morgan? I gotta question/surprise! ❤
I chuckle, typing out a surprise as my brunette best friend glances towards me. “That Ash?” She asks, a smile on her lips and I nod, shoving my phone back into my pocket.
“Yeah, he says he has a question and a surprise for me. Should I be afraid?” I laugh while raising an eyebrow.
Morgan scrunches her face before shaking her head. “Nah! I'm sure it'll be cute. He fucking treats you like a princess and I'm here for it,” she tells me and I blush lightly while moving my gaze to the sidewalk.
“Shut up he does not,” I mutter and shake my head. I open the door to the restaurant, letting Morgan go in first before I follow.
We grab a table after ordering our food and I place my phone onto the table. I see that Ashton texted me back and I open it as Morg heads towards the drink area.
{Multimedia Message}
I miss you :(
My heart flutters, awing at the picture of him pouting as his curls are slightly covering his forehead. I open my camera, making the same face before sending it to him.
I miss you too, Ash :,(
I lock my phone just as Morgan sits down, the Panera worker dropping our food off before leaving us be.
“So,” I start before taking a small bite of the sandwich, “how did your date with Mike go?” I cover my mouth as I chew, watching as she pokes at the pasta in front of her.
The smile on her lips widens, shrugging her shoulders. “It went well. I'm hoping that he'll call me and if he doesn't I'll just call him,” she tells me and I chuckle.
“Get it, girl,” I laugh before taking another bite and lets out a content hum.
“What about you and Ash? What do you think his surprise or question is gonna be?” Morgan asks and I shrug my shoulders, ripping a piece of baguette.
“I don't know, honestly. We've been together for what? Almost seven months now? It could be anything,” I mumble and eats the piece of bread.
“You think he's gonna ask you to marry him?” She questions, raising an eyebrow and I choke on the food, coughing loudly. I place a hand on my chest as I cough a couple more times. “Sorry!” She mutters as her eyes are wide.
I let out a huff of breath, clearing my throat while wiping the tears from my eyes. “Oh my god, you don't think…?” I murmur, feeling my heart beat quicker in my chest. I slightly panic, my eyes shifting towards my phone and Morgan lays a hand on mine.
“Hey! I'm sure he's not. I didn't mean to put the idea into your head,” she frowns and I give her a small smile.
-
Honestly, the proposal thing hasn't left my mind since Morgan mentioned it. After walking through the door of Ashton's apartment, setting my keys on the table beside the door.
“Babe?” I call out, slipping my shoes off.
“Kitchen!” He calls out and I smile, skipping off towards the kitchen to see my curly-haired boyfriend sitting on the island with a small tub of ice cream in his hands. “Hey, baby.”
I furrow my eyebrows, giggling a bit as I stand in front of him. My hands rest against his thighs, leaning on my toes to press a kiss to his lips. “Hi,” I grin and begin to pull away from him when he reconnected our lips.
A happy hum leaves my lips and I can hear him set the tub of ice cream down before his hands press against my cheeks.
“Did you have a good day?” He asks against my lips. I nod my head before glancing towards the ice cream.
“You okay?” I ask, biting my lip softly. “Usually when people eat ice cream they're eating their feelings.”
Ashton laughs, pushing me back a bit before he jumps down. He brings his hand up to my face, gently stroking my cheek as he just stared down at me for a few moments.
“I'm great. I was just in the mood for sweets. Uhm, that surprise I was talking about? Can I give it to you now?” He asks and I gulp a bit before nodding my head.
He presses a quick kiss to my lips before running off, leaving me in the kitchen. My pulse quickens, getting a bit nervous and turns around just as he comes back.
“I've thought about this for a month or so and I thought it was finally time to take the next step,” Ash mumbles and my breath hitches in my throat, feeling my face blush as I expect him to get down on one knee.
Ashton pulls a set of keys out from his pocket, grinning as he hands one to me. My lips part, confused as I analyze the chrome key in my palms. “Wha-,” I cut myself off, looking up at Ash.
He licks his lips, his hazel eyes looking from my hands to my eyes. “Y/N, will you move into our new house with me?”
I snap my head up quickly, a quiet gasp leaving my lips. “A-Are you serious?” I ask and he nods, smiling softly. “Oh my god, yes, of course. Oh my god, Ashton.”
I grip the key in my left hand, wrapping my right arm around his neck and hugs him tightly. “I can't believe you bought us a house,” I whisper into his ear, feeling his hands rest on my lower back. “When do we move in? Oh god, I gotta tell my landlord I'm moving out.”
“Hey, hey. Calm down. We've got a week before we can move in. You've got time,” he chuckles and presses a kiss to my forehead.
-
Ashton's thumb rubs along the back of my hand as we drive to our new place. I glance back, seeing a bunch of our things stuffed into the back.
“So, the place came with furniture?” I ask, turning my head towards him.
The curly-haired man turns down a different street before glancing towards me. “Actually no. I thought we could go shopping for furniture,” he mumbles and I grin, squeezing his hand.
“That sounds fantastic. Kinda like what you see in sappy movies, “It won't be mine or your stuff. It'll be ours.” I like it. You're cute,” I tell him and leans across the middle console to press a kiss to his scruffy cheek.
“You're gorgeous,” he replies while giving me a cheeky grin. I roll my eyes, scoffing a bit. “What?! You are! You don't believe me?”
I shrug my shoulders, glancing out the passenger window. “Sometimes I just think you could do better than me,” I mumble quietly.
We stop at a stoplight and Ashton removes his hand from mine. His fingers gently grab my chin, turning my face towards him. A frown was settled on his lips as his hazel eyes bore into mine. “There's definitely no one better than you. You are so incredible in so many ways. I fall in love with you every day. I wouldn't wanna experience this with anyone else,” he mumbles and a horn blaring loudly snaps us out of the moment.
I jump at the sound as Ashton curses, driving forward. We sit in a comfortable silence the rest of the drive, music quietly coming from the radio as Ash's hand finds mine again.
“I love you,” he tells me and I look over at him, smiling softly.
“I love you so much, Ash,” I mumble quietly and squeeze his hand. We pull up to a white medium-sized house, my eyes widening as Ashton parks the car in the driveway. “Holy shi-.”
I jump out of the car, jogging up to the front door and fishes the house key from my front pocket. I unlock the door, letting out a sharp gasp as I step into the place.
Tears begin to pool in my eyes as I walk through the entire house. “Ash-,” I cut myself off, covering my mouth with my hand. His hands land on my hips as we get to the master bedroom.
“I was thinking that we could go to Sherwin Williams or Lowe's and get some paint. Whites a little too plain for a bedroom,” he mumbles into my ear as his chin rests on my shoulder.
I turn to face him, nodding my head before placing my hands on his cheeks. “Absolutely. This place is amazing… beautiful. I love you and our new home,” I whisper and bring his face closer to mine, connecting our lips.
His hands slide around my waist, resting on the small of my back as he pulls away. Ashton rests his forehead against mine, letting out a quiet sigh. “I'm so glad you love it. I was getting really stressed that you'd hate it then you'd leave me,” he mumbles and I let out a chuckle, shaking my head.
“I could never leave you. You… you make me the happiest I've ever been. I've never been more in love with any of my past boyfriends like I am with you,” I whisper while moving some of the curls from his eyes.
Ashton lets out a sigh of relief, kissing my forehead. “God, I fucking love you so much. You ready to do some shopping?” He asks and I nod excitingly, letting out a small squeal.
“Yes, yes!”
-
Ashton and I stood in front of the paint pallets in Sherwin Williams, trying to find the perfect color for our bedroom. A lot of the house was white and we've been debating if we wanted to change it or keep it like that.
“What about this one?” He asks, reaching forward grabbing a light neutral tone. “It's called caramelized.”
I chuckle as he wiggles his eyebrows, punching him in the arm lightly. “I mean it's not the ugliest color. It's kind of calming actually. You know what? Fuck it. Let's get it,” I grin while taking the paint card from his hands.
We head over to the worker and the guy gives us a friendly smile. “Hi, can I help you with something?” Todd asks and I nod.
“Yeah, can we get two-gallon cans of this color?” I ask and hand him the card.
He nods, tapping his finger against it and Todd opens his mouth to mention something. “I-You don't have to take my suggestion but it's best to prime your walls first before painting it. Would you like the primer as well?” He asks, his eyes darting between Ashton and I.
I look up at the drummer, raising an eyebrow before I slowly shrug my shoulder. Ashton chuckles and turns his attention to the employee in front of us. “Yeah, we'll take some primer,” he nods.
Todd gave us a small smile before going to collect our paint. I wrap an arm around his waist, resting my head against his side. “Babe?” I call out and he hums. “We should probably get some paint brushes and rollers.”
“Oh… good idea,” Ashton laughs and pulls away from me, gathering the brushes. Todd comes back just as Ash did and sets the brushes, rollers, and roller try onto the counter.
-
“Yeah, thanks for coming on such late notice. We just got the house and we were too excited to wait,” Ashton laughs while paying the three movers.
I sit on our new couch, smiling as I run my hands over the navy blue sofa. The curly-haired man ran back into the living room, jumping onto the couch and his head lands onto my lap.
“Jesus, Ash,” I giggle and runs my fingers through his hair. “Don't break the furniture already.”
He gives me a toothy grin, winking slightly before adjusting his position. “Do you wanna invite the guys and Morgan over? We can order pizza and they can pick it up on the way,” Ashton offers and I continue running my fingers through his soft hair, humming in response.
“Yeah. We can do that,” I smile and leans down to press a kiss to his lips. “I'll call Morg.” I pull my phone out of my back pocket, tapping on Morgan's contact before calling her.
I press the phone against my ear as I stuck my foot under my leg, Ashton's head still in my lap.
“Hello hi!” Her voice answers and I can't help but giggle, shaking my head.
“Hey! Are you with Michael right now?” I ask as my the fingers on my free hand went back into Ash's curly hair.
It was silent for a few moments before Morgan spoke up. “... Maybe, why?”
I let out a chuckle, shaking my head as I roll my eyes at her vague response. “Well, Ashton and I are chilling in our new place and wanted to know if you guys wanted to come over… maybe pick up a pizza??” I ask, biting my lip softly and I can hear Michael groan a bit through the phone.
“Yeah, we’ll be there soon,” she laughs and Mike groans a bit more. I smile softly, bidding her goodbye before hanging up the phone, texting the other two boys to come over in half an hour.
Ashton connected his phone to the speaker that sat on the island, music softly playing through the half-empty house. My muscles were straining slightly as we had to help the movers bring our king-sized mattress up the stairs since two of them were working on getting the bed frame. His slender fingers rub against my forearms, sitting in silence as we wait for our friends to get here.
“So, all we need to do is unpack the boxes of our belongings then this home will be complete,” Ash mentions and I nod.
The doorbell rings and Ashton quickly gets up to meet our friends at the door. “Congrats you guys!” Cheers and hollers echo through the house as I let out a laugh, seeing the four of them walk into the living room with pizza and champagne in their hands. “Let's celebrate!” Michael grins.
-
The sound of our balcony doors open, the creaking bouncing off the walls of our master bedroom. I turn over in bed, letting out a groan as the sun shines brightly in my face. My eyes slowly open, stretching my arms and legs a bit.
A quiet squeal leaves my lips before sighing, pressing the duvet against my lower face. Ashton stands on our three-foot balcony, a white sheet draped around his waist as he looks at the city view.
I bite my lip softly, noticing the red claw marks that litter his back. I comb my fingers through my messy hair, thinking about the events of last night after everyone had left.
“Morning, handsome,” I call out and Ashton jumps a bit, turning his head back to look at me.
A smile comes to his lips and he steps back into the room, keeping the doors open and plops onto the mattress that lies on the floor. “Morning, beautiful,” he mumbles while dragging his fingertips up and down my arm. “Did you sleep well?”
A content hum leaves my lips while nodding my head. “Actually, yeah. The bed we picked out is extremely fucking comfortable. Even after a long night of…” I trail off and wiggles my eyebrows.
Ashton let's out a laugh, tilting his head back before shaking his head. “You mean a long night of fucking? Yeah, I agree.”
I smack his chest and giggles while lying onto my back, my breasts poking out above the duvet slightly. “Shut up. You knew what I meant. You didn't have to say it,” I tell him as his arm drapes over my waist.
“Why not? We've fucked plenty of times. It's just me. I'm not gonna tease you,” he smirks and presses a kiss to the side of my head. “Although I do say you handle me quite well.”
A blush appears on my cheeks and I bite my lip to hide the smile, turning onto my side to hide my face in his chest. A few more giggles leave Ashton's lips as his large hand moves to my exposed back, dragging his nails up and down it slowly.
“Did you want to paint the room today?” He asks after we laid in silence for a couple of minutes. I pull my head away from his chest, glancing around the very white room.
“Yeah, we can do that. It'll be easier to pick the furniture for it once we see the color on the wall,” I tell him and he nods in agreement.
Ashton untangled from me, standing up without the sheet on his hips. I couldn't help but lick my lips and stare as he stood completely nude, raising his arms to stretch his muscles. Jesus Christ… “First things first… I'm gonna take a shower,” he tells me and I sit up on the bed, letting the duvet fall to my lap, exposing my chest. “Do… do you wanna join me?” He asks while biting his lip, hazel eyes glancing downward.
“Yes,” I answer immediately. Throwing the covers off my body, I roll off the mattress before grabbing Ash's hand to lead him into the en suite.

It’s Thursday, right? I can’t tell anymore. The days all run together and really, who cares? It’s not like we’re keeping track of a busy social calendar. The mister is off work this week because we’d planned on traveling north to spoil our favorite toddler. His answer to a stretch of empty days was to tackle a project, so we’ve been taking down, sanding, painting, changing the hardware, and rehanging every interior door. Every room and closet. When I say “we” it’s mostly “he”. I’m just doing the painting and occasionally help with rehanging. I have the easy part. We’re finishing the last two doors today. Can I get a hallelujah?
That’s my garage workshop. I play 70′s music and sing loudly and badly while I paint. Bet the neighbors will be really happy when we’re done. We swapped out the super shiny 90′s gold knobs (that weren’t so shiny anymore ) for some nice oil-rubbed bronze.
The hinges and plates were swapped out too. It’s little stuff like that that makes me happy. I love ‘em! Speaking of happy little things. I’m painting rocks. Yup, decades from now when I’m asked how I spent my time during the pandemic lockdown I’ll say I painted rocks. I’m hoping to create a village of little cottages in the fairy garden. This is what I;m currently working on. Turns out that it’s not easy to paint straight lines on a bumpy rock so I have quite a bit to tidy up here, but you get the idea.
Even though it’s a bit wonky, no self-respecting fairy would turn down a chance to move into a cozy, thatch roofed cottage. Beats living under a bush or in an abandoned nest (which is where I assume they sleep). I’ll clean this up and start on another. I hope I can find enough rocks of the right shapes and sizes. Some fairies may have to bunk together. My timer just went off to remind me to get back into the garage and paint doors. I left the last two to dry before lunch, now it’s time to flip them and paint the other side and then I’m FREE! Free to fold laundry, unload the dishwasher, and make another meal. If I’m being honest here I’ll probably go on a rock hunt before I do any of those other chores. I have priorities. Then I’ll hop in the shower and scrub head to toe because I keep finding little paint flecks that I missed in my last shower. Tomorrow Mickey is taking our new passport photos and I don’t want to look like I have a skin condition. Off to slap some paint on doors and look for rocks. We’re livin’ life on the edge here on the Pullen spread. Hope you’re all hanging in there and finding ways to stay busy. Make your own fun, do something silly, tackle a project (Sherwin-Williams has touchless curbside pickup!), and give yourself a break from the news. It’s great to wash your hands a thousand times a day, but remember to take care of your heart and mind as well. Stay well, stay whole. XOXO, Nancy

Just finished meeting with our local Sherwin Williams rep! I was able to discuss our painting needs with Eric and projects they could help us with down the road. Super great and professional guy to work with and looking forward to using more Sherwin Williams paint! 🎨 🖌 #newprague #newpraguemn #handyman #paint #painting #sherwinwilliams #sherwinwilliamspaint (at New Prague, Minnesota) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpfwlrcLxf9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Living Room Update: Two New Rugs For a Cozy, Layered Look
Our living room refresh is coming along!
Slowly but surely, we’re giving the room we spend the most amount of time in (besides the kitchen, naturally) a little update by making seemingly small changes that have quite a big impact. Case in point: switching out our old rug for two new ones.
Remember when we painted our living room white at the end of last year? That was really what kicked off our wanting to give this room a little makeover. We didn’t hate the way it used to look by any means, but after 2020 felt so dark and grim, I think we both wanted to brighten up at least one of the rooms in our house (almost our entire house is painted Urban Putty by Sherwin Williams and even though it’s our favorite color ever, there’s something so crisp and airy about a white room isn’t there?).
We had already been working on rearranging the furniture in our home for the last couple of months, and because we spend so much time in there, the living room seemed like the natural choice to devote the most time to. Plus it’s fun to switch things up every now and then! For us, it’s a creative outlet to constantly move things in our house around. Do you do the same thing?
We wanted to keep things fairly neutral and have little pops of color here and there. But not too much! Remember how I still want to hang navy velvet curtains in here? I returned the ones that I ordered that didn’t fit and just need to re-order some new ones. Although now that the new rugs are in here, I might be rethinking navy blue? Maybe a rust color or linen? TBD.
Anyway, we ended up going with two rugs from RugsUSA.com and putting the smaller one on top. We love the look of layering a rug on top of another, because few things create a more cozy and comfortable atmosphere in a space than when you add layers to a room (like books, pillows, throws, curtains, blinds, rugs, art, etc.). Think of all of those things as the finishing touches that make a house a home and create a lived-in feel that a lot of us strive for.
The bottom is a jute rug and boy is it comfortable. It feels so good on your feet when you walk and is a lot more plush and squishy than I think either of us thought it would be. Jute rugs don’t have a reputation for being extremely comfy to walk on, but this one absolutely is.
The top is a more traditional medallion rug in style, but it’s also jute (50% jute, 50% polyester), and it’s also super comfy! It’s even Alyster approved! He’s been enjoying the new rugs a ton, always stretched out or plopped down on them relaxing in the evening sun.
If you’re new here, you’re probably wondering what the living room looked like before, so here it is:
And again, here’s what it looks like now:
Not the biggest change, is it? Blink and you might miss it, but in person (and maybe you see it in the photos) there is a noticeable difference in there. It feels…happier. Brighter. More of the look we were going for.
Don’t get me wrong, we both love the old antique Persian rug that used to live in there and plan on using it in another room in the future, but it was dark, a little too dark for what we wanted. The new rugs give off the vintage vibes we loved abut the old one while simultaneously lending themselves to the updated look we were after. All in all, they’re just a better fit for that room in our opinion.
Black, white and brown is my absolute favorite color scheme ever. Something about them paired together does things to me! We have a little of each of those colors in every room of our house and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of that look. See how good the white walls with the black frames and the brown doors/blinds look with the tan jute rug? And see how the pops of color throughout the room in the form of plants and books and pillows really shine against the more muted colors?
Now if we can just find a way to straighten out that chandelier that hangs in the middle of the room (or remove it all together?). I don’t know, though. It’s leftover from when this was our dining room, but to be honest we like the warm glowy light it gives off when it’s on. It creates an ambiance and completely changes the feel of the room and I don’t think we’re ready to part with it just yet.
We worked with RugsUSA over on Instagram and you can see how this whole room was pieced together, layer by layer, here. We’re thisclose to calling the living room complete; all that’s left now is adding curtains!
Let’s see how long it takes to get those up :).
