Well the hummingbirds are on their way!!! Time to get those feeders out in our area real soon, there has been a sighting in Toronto. The male hummers migrate first to find their territory, the the females follow later. How do I know that they are in Toronto? If you want to follow them check out the map, you can even report your own sightings. 😀 There are some simple rules for making hummingbird nectar. First, and the most important is DO NOT buy the red hummingbird food sold in stores. Why? The red colouring in the store bought food can kill those little jewels, besides that, it is a waste of money. The best way to make hummingbird nectar for your feeders is to make a simple mixture of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water, just addd the sugar to the water and stir until the sugar is dissolved. You don’t need to boil the water first, any bacteria that gets in the nectar comes from their own beaks, just remember to change it often. Any leftover nectar can be stored in the fridge. I’ll put my feeders out in the next week or so but the traditional time to put out the feeders is Mother’s Day. If you are looking for one, I have these beautiful feeders for sale at the store.
