Carlos Santana has a career that moves within a variety of idioms, though he remains a rock musician at heart. Sure, he appears on many jazz fusion records, yet he always puts some of his rock stylings in these proceedings. That makes his collaboration with Herbie Hancock on Monster weird, since you can't really locate much of the rock idiom there. To be honest, you can't find jazz there either. Actually, I am quite happy to hear Herbie Hancock did some LPs, where he discarded his genre and which probably pissed off most of his audience. Nonetheless, there's something admirable about someone like him doing something like this, more musicians should do this more often. And the fact that he convinced Santana for this? Even better.

This is the Munster Records version of this release which contains 4 extra tracks. Unfortunately, these are only one minute long clips, but thanks to the rule of punk, that's more than enough to get a taste of these songs. If you want the songs in their entirety, here you go.
The Zeros were originally from Chula Vista, California and were part of the punk explosion in the U.S. They have a clear Clash/Ramones sound. Their first show was organized by Peter Case (The Nerves) and they shared the bill with The Germs and The Weirdos.
Better yet, one of the founders is Javier Escovedo whose brother Alejandro Escovedo is a legend - so is his niece, Sheila E.
The Zeros reformed a couple of times and Javier has a couple of solo records, but this early stuff is amazing. October is Hispanic Heritage Month, so let's listen to and celebrate some great punk from the Latin community in California.
Just listen to "Don't Push Me Around" - think of The Clean or The Replacements playing it.

Steven Ralph Arrington (born March 5, 1956) is a singer, songwriter, drummer, record producer, engineer, and minister, who grew up in Dayton. He played in various local bands before joining and touring with The Murphys, a lounge band out of Toledo in 1975. He relocated from Ohio to San Francisco, where he learned Latin percussion and drumming as well as playing with Coke Escovedo, Pete Escovedo, and Sheila E. He joined the funk group Slave on their third LP, called The Concept, in 1978 – originally to play percussion, becoming the drummer and a backing vocalist. He took over lead vocals, singing on the hit singles "Just a Touch of Love", "Watching You" and "Wait for Me". He left Slave in 1982, forming Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame, and had hit singles such as "Weak at the Knees" and "Nobody Can Be You But You". His most successful album was his 1985 solo work Dancin' in the Key of Life, whose title track became a top ten R&B hit. The single spent three weeks at #2 on the dance charts and went to #3 on the Radio & Records R&B airplay chart. "Feel So Real" reached #5 on the UK Singles Chart in May of that year. He was nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Best Male Artist of 1986. He experienced a religious conversion, becoming a licensed minister and, he left pop music until his re-emergence in October 2009, when he released the R&B, Funk, spiritual album, Pure Thang. On August 6, 2013, Stones Throw Records released Arrington + Dam-Funk's "Higher". On September 18, 2020, Stones Throw Records released a new solo album by him titled Down to the Lowest Terms: The Soul Sessions with the single "Keep Dreamin'". The album recording took place in 2019–2020 in collaboration with a cast of a new generation of talented producers orchestrated with the help of Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf. Producers include DJ Harrison, Knxwledge, J Rocc, Shibo, Jerry Paper, Brian Ellis, Gifted & Blessed, and Benedek. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CpaHQ6eLlJ0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

New Year Song - Nick Paone and the Gang -------------------------
Time once again to delve into the multi-dimensional reality of holiday music in all its eclectic and peculiar splendor.  This year’s highlights include:
Esquivel, the creator of ‘Space Age Bachelor Pad Music’, whom we haven’t heard from in a few years.  It’s always good to be reminded of what the future of music sounded like back in the late 50s and early 60s.  His charming spoken interlude in this bizarre take on “Jingle Bells” went on a bit long so I confess that I made a small edit.
I just discovered the wonderful Icelandic singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Laufey this year.  She has an Ella Fitzgerald-like contralto voice and sings in a somewhat similar style; listening to her is like being bathed in warm honey (if that’s your idea of a good time).  Her contribution, “Christmas Dreaming (A Little Early This Year),” was originally recorded by Frank Sinatra in 1947.
As I’ve said many times before, Christmas and yodeling go together like…um, something and something else.  And it’s been a couple of years since we had a yodeling yuletide song, so here’s “Grandfather Kringle” performed by one Ronnie Ronalde.
And speaking of going together, how about Lawrence Welk and B. B. King?  Made for each other, right?  Lawrence and his Champagne Music provide an insanely jaunty take on “The Christmas Song”, while B.B. puts his own stamp on the raunchy old Clarence Carter tune from 1968, “Back Door Santa”.
Something about Kate Rusby’s holiday recordings always seems to hit the sweet spot for me: her Christmas songs are always beautifully written, performed, arranged and produced.  They’re melodic and heartfelt without being clichéd, which is why I’ve included her work on so many of these compilations in recent years.  This year’s contribution, “Sweet Bells,” is a perfect example.
Percussionist Pete Escovedo played in Carlos Santana’s band and is the father of Sheila E. (best known for her stint in Prince’s band).  Jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo has played on dozens of albums by folks like Herbie Hancock, George Duke and others, as well as releasing several albums under his own name.  Their latin-jazz take on “Feliz Navidad” definitely swings.
Carole King needs no introduction.  “Love for Christmas” is from her 2011 album, A Christmas Carole.
Literally a hundred years ago, on October 31st, 1924, a vocal group known as the Collegiate Choir, along with an orchestra, recorded a medley of Christmas carols, including “The First Noel” and “God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen” (There was a third song, “Christians, Awake!”, in the medley but I cut it as it’s not very well known these days).  It still amazes me that the recording engineers of the time were able to get anything resembling a balanced sound with the entire huge ensemble gathered around a single recording “horn”.   See the video below for how it was done back then:
youtube
And sending us off into the New Year in a properly delirious fashion is Nick Faone and the Gang, with the A-side of their only known recording, the exceedingly goofy “New Year Song” from 1950.
Many thanks as always to Ernie at https://ernienotbert.blogspot.com/ and B-Man of Radio Vickers for their bottomless cornucopia of holiday music shares.
The cover art is, of course, jolly old Gort from the 1951 classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still. DOWNLOAD

Sheila Cecilia Escovedo (December 12, 1957) known under the stage name Sheila E. is a percussionist and singer. She began her career in the mid-1970s as a percussionist and singer for The George Duke Band. After leaving the group in 1983, she began a successful solo career, starting with her critically acclaimed debut album, which included her career-defining song, “The Glamorous Life”. She became a mainstream solo star in 1985 following the success of the singles “The Belle of St. Mark”, “Sister Fate”, and “A Love Bizarre”, with the last becoming one of her signature songs. She is referred to as the “Queen of Percussion.
She appeared in four films, Krush Groove, Sign “O” the Times, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, and Chasing Papi.
Born in Oakland, she is the daughter of Juanita Gardere, a dairy factory worker, and percussionist Pete Escovedo. She was raised Catholic.
Her uncle is Alejandro Escovedo and Tito Puente was her godfather. She is the niece of Javier Escovedo, founder of the seminal San Diego punk act The Zeros. Another uncle, Mario Escovedo, fronted long-running indie rockers The Dragons. She is the niece of Coke Escovedo, who was in Santana and formed the band Azteca. Nicole Richie is her niece, and the daughter of her musician brother, Peter Michael Escovedo.
In February 2009, she was made an honorary member of the Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority in recognition of her humanitarian efforts through and in music. She is the co-founder of Elevate Oakland, a nonprofit that uses music and art to serve the needs of youth in Oakland public schools. She along with her father, was presented with the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
