Pen through the heart
read it on AO3 at https://archiveofourown.org/works/49540186 by TrinnyMoo After the events of last season Penelope has never felt more alone. No best friend. No hope left for dreams of love. Nothing but her thoughts and her mother’s criticisms to keep her company. And it’s left her determined to change into someone no longer at the mercy of the whims of Bridgertons and Society alike. She’s made plans to take this season by storm and secure her family’s future. But after a lifetime of being a wallflower, is it so easy to become a rose? Colin Bridgerton has returned to London, finally unburdened from his past mistakes. No longer does he receive pitying looks and snide remarks; in their place flattery and fluttering lashes abound. But it all feels empty and shallow while he wrestles with the hole in his life that his red-headed pen pal once filled. When he finds out the reason for her silence with him this past year, he’s willing to do anything to make amends – including assisting her in her quest to find a match this season. However, the more time he spends with her, the more he realizes his feelings for his childhood friend may be more than he expected. Season 3 prediction fic. She’s All That (1999)
Tumblr media
What makes a movie good isn’t merely convincing performances, a story that generates an emotional response, meeting the audience’s expectations, and proper filmmaking techniques. A good movie does those things, and more. If you're happy with "adequate", watch She’s All That. It’s a no-bells, no-whistles version of My Fair Lady minus all the personality.
Zackary “Zack” Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is a shoo-in for prom king in six weeks. When his equally popular and attractive girlfriend Taylor Vaughan (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), dumps him, Zack says he can find another future prom queen no problem. His friend Dean Sampson, Jr. (Paul Walker) challenges him to turn dorky, unpopular art student Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) into a hottie.
Haven’t we seen this movie already? It feels like it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Most romantic comedies, fairy tales, etc. follow a general formula. What makes you prefer one over the other are the details, the little quirks that make the characters unique, memorable lines you quote to your friends, favorite moments, instances where the formula is turned on its head, or even the imperfections everyone acknowledges then moves past. She’s All That has none of those and isn’t self-aware enough to make this work in its favor.
It's the cinematic equivalent of a hotdog with ketchup… and nothing else on it. You can’t help compare this 1999 film to My Fair Lady. Its equivalent of Zack had personality. This guy? He’s amiable and bland. You won’t have any reservations about him and Laney getting together. Actually, there’s no reason for them not to. On their first date, he clearly shows genuine interest in her, so much that when the inevitable shocking reveal about the bet comes around, you expect her to listen to his apology and accept it no problem. Particularly after he befriends her brother, Simon (Kieran Culkin), and then defends him from school bullies. He turns against him too eventually, which is even less convincing.
As expected, Laney Boggs isn’t really a dork, and she isn’t unpopular for any convincing reason. She’s merely a pair of contacts and a new hairdo away from being a showstopper. If anything more drastic were required, there’s no way the film’s timeline of six weeks would work. I realize that’s the premise but once Laney’s glasses come off, they never come back on and it doesn’t feel like Zack’s done anything to get her to open up and make new friends either. Once done-over, she fits in perfectly with the upper-class high-school clique, which makes you question some of the "earth-shattering" truths she encounters on the road from ugly duckling to swan. So what if Zack’s ex is mean to her? Why does she take it out on him?
The picture is consistently short of what it could be. The leads are appealing enough, there are some occasionally funny moments, the premise has a certain timeless appeal. It’s just missing that something something. My favorite scene - a long dance sequence set at the prom - serves no purpose. Matthew Lillard’s character - as entertaining as he is - could've been removed entirely. You won’t be sorry if you sit down and watch She’s All That but you won’t remember it down the line either. Can we please have more glowup-revenge movies in the universe. Like where nerd girl is bullied by popular girl, then the nerd glows up and steals her boyfriend. But not because she’s hot now, but because he realized the popular girl was a bitch and she’s nice.

He’s All That (2021)
Tumblr media
Attempting the gender-swap reboot thing with She’s All That was a bad idea. It’s even less memorable than its predecessor - itself a vanilla version of My Fair Lady - and squanders every opportunity it might’ve had to update the story.
Instagram influencer Padgett Sawyer (played by TikTok superstar Addison Rae) is devastated when she catches her boyfriend Jordan (Peyton Meyer) cheating while live streaming. Their breakup causes her to lose followers and sponsorships in droves. To win them back, she takes on a challenge to turn loser Cameron Kweller (Tanner Buchanan) into prom king.
Like in She’s All That, you can foresee just about everything in this story. I won’t criticize the movie for this too because it’s what you came to see. I will criticize writer R. Lee Fleming Jr. for the flaccid attempts to utilize social media in the story. Catching your boyfriend cheating on you isn't going to cost you followers. If anything, you’d gain some… they’d just be subscribing for the wrong reasons. There are so many ways this tale could use new-age technology to its advantage. Cameron could learn about the deception through an overly personal video or a text message she accidentally sends to the wrong contact, for example. As is, this feels like a whole lot of "How do you do, fellow kids?"
By far, the movie's biggest flaw is Addison Rae. She proves you can be badly cast even when "playing yourself". Every scene with her and Tanner Buchanan is unconvincing. It reinforces the feeling that this whole thing... really wouldn't play out this way in real life. Even with his antisocial attitude and long hair, eight-pack sporting Cameron would be beating the ladies off with a stick. He also wouldn't care about being tricked, not with his raging teenage hormones. If you think those makeovers of the past where all the lady needed was to put her hair down and take off her glasses were ridiculous, check out how little effort is needed to turn this hunk into prom king candidate.
This Pygmalion tale has never been flimsier thanks to the non-existent stakes. On top of the jeopardized sponsorship, Padgett is also remodeling Cameron because of a bet, a bet that means NOTHING. Firstly, it’s a wager between kids. Secondly, the whole thing should be null and void because of interference. Finally, there's no reason for Padgett to keep going with it, certainly not once she develops true feelings for her mark.
The story is made more modern by giving both Cameron and Padgett lesbian besties, both of which are played by visual minorities... but they’re completely superfluous to the story, so let’s not get too excited. There’s a message somewhere about experiencing life outside of your phone. Otherwise, nothing except for the casting (which includes non-actress Kourtney Kardashian) makes this story any better than She’s All That, which was at least semi-original.
In theory, this should’ve been a good idea. Don’t remake good movies; remake movies that had potential they never lived up to. For fans, throw in some Easter eggs in the form of Matthew Lillard and Rachael Leigh Cook, a pointless dance scene and a remix of Sixpence None the Richer’s Kiss Me. Instead, He’s All That will make you look back fondly on a mediocre movie as it struggles to validate its existence. (September 17, 2021)

M. Night Shyamalan Ghost Wrote "She's All That"
After cinematic atrocities like The Village, The Happening, and The Last Airbender, writer-director M. Night Shyamalan became such a joke to the degree that his name on the trailer for Devil--for which he earned a story credit—got laughs from moviegoers across America. Little wonder then that Columbia Pictures carefully hid his writer and director credits on the marketing for the Will Smith/Jaden Smith vanity project vehicle After Earth. But doing press for the picture, the twist-obsessed filmmaker has revealed something truly shocking: he was the ghostwriter for popular 1999 teen-centered rom-com She's All That.
Speaking with Movies.com, Shyamalan spoke about his range, and then admitted that The Sixth Sense (which he wrote and directed) and Stuart Little (which he has a screenplay credit on) were not the only 1999 movies he worked on. After teasing he'd ghost-written a movie that year as well, he confesses:
"I ghost-wrote the movie She's All That. "
Cue the string section to score this stunning reveal! You mean to say that R. Lee Fleming Jr., the writer of the Kirsten Dunst/Sisqo rom-com Get Over It was not the film's sole scribe! Our world is forever rattled!  All kidding aside, it's not a bad idea for Shyamalan to attempt to tout his range as a writer, considering his string of movies dependent on a mind-bending third-act twist gave him a reputation for being one-note. The release of After Earth has done little to help his reputation as it's been roundly scorned by critics (11% on Rotten Tomatoes). More painfully, the sci-fi adventure budgeted at $130 million dollars has only made $47 million domestically so far, and bad word of mouth is unlikely to help it gain momentum. But some still have faith in Shyamalan. How about you?
