Tbh, I'm surprised that in all of the various posts and analyses of Outis I've seen, I haven't seen anyone mention the fact that two of the most defining events of Odysseus' journey are his men specifically disobeying his orders behind his back and bringing about disaster as a result - opening the wind bag gifted by the god Aeolus and thus causing them to be blown off course (and making pretty much all of the events of their journey happen as a result), and slaughtering the cattle of Helios, resulting in all of their deaths and the destruction of his ship.
