Every once in a while I stumble upon a bg3 artist whose work is amazing, it's just a bummer they have zero Minthara content. And I understand most would prefer to recruit her on a good playthrough, which I heavily encourage.
Then I take a look at their Tav and a dark part of me thinks "you know what, maybe it's for the best, I really think she'd rather die than have to deal with a Tav who fancies themselves camp therapist."

Three months! How can so many things happen in three months?
I said to my therapist “I know it’s self-pitying, but I feel like bad things just keep happening to me?” And she said “No, that’s objectively true,” and I laughed through my tears.
Our car was stolen on Arlo’s fifth birthday. When the police found it three days later, it was filled with bullet holes.
A few weeks later, for reasons I can’t bear to name, the depression I’d been battling since age 12 hit an all time low. I was incapable of doing anything other than contemplate and plan my suicide. I was voluntarily committed to the psychiatric ward for four days. It was the single most traumatic experience of my life and also utterly necessary.
The hospital referred me to a doctor to manage the medication I was prescribed. Days before my first appointment, I received a call that my appointment was canceled. The doctor had died, unexpectedly. I was never able to get someone from the practice to return my calls.
A few weeks after I returned home, my grandma died. It was not particularly sudden, but I took it harder than I expected to.
A few weeks later, while I was on vacation in Cape Cod with my family, my mom got up in the night and thinking she was entering the bathroom, stepped into thin air down the basement steps. She suffered a traumatic brain injury, a broken vertebra, a fractured knee, and a sprained ankle. I spent much of the rest of my vacation in the hospital, worrying she would die.
After I returned home, I found out the nannying job I’d been clinging to with a hopefulness I didn’t realize I had left in me, had fallen through. I felt unsurprised in a way that broke my heart.
Arlo didn’t qualify for his IEP for kindergarten. The occupational therapist informs me that I’m going to have to fight to get him what he needs. The pharmacy is texting me that I’m about to run out of medication and I still don’t have a doctor. Thora flares up with hives all over her face and body and we rush her to urgent care. Ben’s mom asks if we’re still thinking about another baby. I cry in the bathroom at a family function. Arlo’s gymnastics coach leaves me a voicemail, asking how they can help him get through the days at camp. I don’t know. I don’t know! Everything keeps happening and I’m barely here!
No tidy endings to this list. It feels more appropriate to end with an ellipsis. A foreboding “to be continued…” Is that bad luck?
Seconds after I wrote the paragraph above, there was honking, a shot fired directly outside our house and a scream. Ben and I fell to our knees, away from the windows and called 911. Later, more shots, further off in the distance.
It felt like a warning, an echo. A reply.

family photo
Here are three generations of the Pavlenko family, posing for a proper family portrait. If it wasn't obvious, their collective favourite colour is green.
From left to right; Grandpa Nikolai, Elena, Mikhail, and twins Nikolai and Natalya.
Grandpa Nikolai is retired now, but he had a long and successful career as a biochemist. He was also his grandson's de facto manager and his biggest fan during his figure skating career. He's got a genius-level intellect and isn't shy about telling people as much. He loves to socialize, and he's kind of a busybody.
Mikhail, known as Mike to the majority of his Canadian friends and acquaintances, is a master machinist. He speaks flawless English, but is shy and reticent, and this unfortunately leads many people to think he isn't capable of much, including being able to communicate effectively. In reality, Mike is extremely intelligent, just like his father.
Elena, sometimes called Lena by her close friends and family, is a master tailor and owns her own shop. She's not a particularly demonstrative person, but she loves her husband, children and father-in-law as fiercely as any mama bear. If it ever came to it, she'd defend them just as fiercely. She loves winter, and enjoys skating and taking long walks through the forest.
Natalya, better known as Natascha to just about everyone, is the older of Mike & Elena's twins. She's a physical therapist, specializing in athletic rehabilitation. One of her more notable sets of clients is the Brindleton Bay Mariners hockey team. Natascha is divorced and not particularly interested in finding a new partner. She likes to travel, loves the outdoors and enjoys cycling and skating with her brother.
Nikolai is usually called Kolya by his family and close friends. He's the younger twin, and secretly his grandfather's favourite. He's a former competitive figure skater, and is currently a figure skating coach. Nikolai is also divorced, but unlike his sister, he's happy for a second chance at love. He's engaged to his partner Mishka, a former professional hockey player, and is looking forward to their upcoming wedding. Like his sister, Nikolai loves the outdoors and enjoys camping, hiking, cycling and canoeing. He likes to cook and enjoys working with Mishka in their garden. He's also a confirmed cat person.

I’m back from camping! Camping was amazing!
While I’m still working and focused on COD things now, please enjoy this little thought I had for Bucky/the winter soldier:
Bucky gets assigned a ‘sunshine’ personality assistant/coach/labradoodle in the flesh reader to help him re-navigate life in the 21st century
He hates the idea and the outings she’s planned for him, and while she’s sunshine personified he’s a doom cloud
He hates that she takes him toe get ice cream for the fun of it, or that she drags him out to take walks because its good for him
He hates her until the lead therapist on this project suggests pairing Bucky up with someone else because it doesn’t seem to be working
Bucky responds negatively and possessively over his ray of sunshine and realized that maybe he actually cares for her more than he lets on
And when they’re out and someone decides to make his sunshine cry, Bucky loses his shit

Lazy Days Lewis (cw: eating disorders)
It's sad that this is how Lazy Days Lewis (a.k.a., Cornelius' younger self) is being introduced, but this is an important part of his story and character so here we go.
Firstly, it'll be easier to understand if you know about this song. -> Appetite of a People-Pleaser by GHOST ft. v4 Flower. His story was molded around it. So was the image. But it wasn't really made to be "artsy." It was more or less made to act as a cover image of sorts.
After the Memory Scanner Going public certainly had its perks for Lewis. Opportunities flooding in left, right, and every which way. However, there was one major downside. One Lewis would obsess over. People's opinions of him. While he would consume all of these opinions, the ones commenting on his appearance would be the ones he consumed the most. Over time, he felt like he wasn't living up to the expectations of others. Of course, a small part of him always thought this way. Bullies made sure to instill that line of thinking. But now, he's dealing with the expectations of people who would become his consumer base. He needed to play the part.
Purge In short, because Lewis became so hyperfixated on other's opinions of him, he developed bulimia. This is something he would struggle with well after he graduated college (at 14, just to remind you). He so badly wanted to be seen as good enough by people around him, because prior to everything happening, he was never told he was good enough. In his eyes, no matter what he did, others never seemed happy. Every step into the public eye was a nightmare as he was berated by opinions. "I'll just have to try a little harder," he thought to himself every day. He believed what he was doing to be necessary. After all, celebrities always seem perfect, so he should be too, right? No one knew what he did behind the scenes, not even his friends. Well, until one of them did.
Franny Franny overheard Lewis in the bathroom after dinner was served at a formal event. He was lucky to bring Franny as a date, because she took no hesitations when confronting him. "Confronting" is a strong word to use here, but Franny was always a little on the intense side. She was gentle, but firm with her approach to Lewis' issue. Of course when somebody is told that their behavior is problematic, the first thing they do is deny its levity. Franny wasn't having it though. Deep down Lewis knew she was right, but that didn't stop him from running out of that bathroom and out of the building bawling his eyes out. And that's all the public eye would see of the now 16 year old for a while.
Enjoy Some Cake Finally, after four years of his binge, purge, and repeat cycle, Lewis told his parents about it after reflecting what Franny said to him a couple of days ago. He needed help. His relationship with food was toxic. They helped him find a therapist who specialized in eating disorders, and that's where he was properly evaluated. The first couple of months was hell, unlearning all of the behaviors Lewis had grown to rely on. But remembering his own motto, "Keep Moving Forward," kept him going. Eventually his therapist brought him a cake slice to see how he was getting on. That slice of cake was the first piece of food where Lewis allowed himself to savor it, and enjoy every bite after some coaching from his therapist. To this day, cake remains his favorite food because it reminds him that food is there to be enjoyed.
That was heavy... so let's lighten the mood back up with five fun facts. - His hair is so thick that whatever wounds up in there... STAYS IN THERE. - Sometimes his pet tarantula, Lillith, ends up camping out in his hair. He can feel her toe beans on his head. - Lewis didn't come back to the public light until he was 17, but even then he wasn't fully back. Just checking in every now and then. - I've mentioned this before, but he always has some sort of plug in his ears. This is because he's very sensitive to sounds (symptom of autism). - He has a giant teddy bear in the corner of his room that he uses as a chair sometimes. He calls her Mary.
Wanna know more about his older counterpart? Refer to these posts -> Lazy Days Info Dump and Lazy Character Busts. Still wanna know more? Ask box is always open.

I'm having my own August moment
I havent been on a date in years, but when I go visit the city where the guy I was talking to lived, it turns out I may be "the other girl"
I just found out the guy I've been talking to has a girlfriend. He doesn't know I know. Now I'm working with my friends to expose him.
August (My Version)
Chapter 1: When we First Met
I first met James back in 2018 when I started University. He was my roommates best friend. I never saw much of this roommate because she was always spending time with him. At one point, James and I realized we had the same birthday.
Later on in the year, my goldfish got really cold and appeared dead. I was upset and he said, "let's turn them into fish-kabobs." I was mortified and grabbed my fish (they flinched) and put them in the freezer. Turns out they were just cold and if I had warmed up their water they would have been fine.
Fast forward to almost the end of the school year and James and my roommate were officially dating. End of the year move out came and went and I thought nothing of him and his relationship.
I graduated in 2022 and hadn't heard from him since my first year. Except that my best friend, Inez, started working with him and they grew to be good friends.
Chapter 2: Stronger than a 90s Trend
After life happened and many people in my life died, gained weight, was overall depressed, I signed up for the gym in January 2023. It was the heaviest I've ever been in my life. I loved it there. I felt great, I was gaining strength and losing weight.
Then, I signed up for three 21-day challenges. With 12 weeks left until summer, I wanted to challenge myself. So I worked hard. I ended up winning 2nd place. I shared my results on Instagram. James messaged me, saying that I was "lookin great!" and to say I was so confused as to why the boy who basically killed my goldfish was messaging me for the first time... ever? I said thanks and moved on.
After the second 21 day challenge, coach shared my progress pics on Instagram. I shared that on my story. He reacted with "🔥." Again, confused but appreciated the support.
Chapter 3: The Best People in Life are Free
Ive been single for years at this point, since 2019 and havent been on a date since 2018.
Going back to my friend, Inez. She tagged him in a snapchat story. I added James. Thought, "why not."
Eventually he sent me a snap or two. His drinks, a dog, views from the boat, what he did on his days off. We slowly started a streak. Then I was off the grid for a weekend and lost it. That didn't stop the snaps.
At this point, I started seeing a new therapist. He told me I should go out on more dates, and my first thought was, "With who? James? The guy who killed my goldfish?"
Slowly, we started talking a little bit more. Talked about work and how working in tourism sucks.
In general, I share gym pictures on snap. But I started sharing them a bit more often.
At this point, I could tell he was into me. Sent him a few gym pics. Got some responses of just his face.
Randomly, one day before the gym, he sends me a shirtless mirror pic. I clicked out of that so fast and yelled, "WTF JAMES" in my car.
I went for a weekend trip to the mountains. Sent him a snap jokingly, saying how my boat was faster than his (I was rowing a jon boat and he captains a whalewatching boat). He thought it was funny and said I was right.
Come time for summer camp, I went back up to the mountains and was mostly off the grid again. I sent some photos of my views and a few of how happy I was to be back. Lost our snap streak again, but still received some snaps while I was off the grid.
Chapter 4: For the Hope of it All
After my 10 days in the mountains, I went back to my real job. I had already known I was leaving. Toxic work environment that I couldn't stand anymore. I went to HR and picked up my voluntary resignation. I sent a snap of the document to James and a couple friends.
Then we got to talking about what I was doing after I left. That's when I tell him I'm going back north to photograph a friend's wedding. In three weeks' time, I would be back in the college town that he still lived in for a week.
We started talking more and more.
That Saturday I was photographing a different wedding reception. Sent him snaps throughout the event. I got pretty drunk. When I got home, I kept snapping him. At one point, James called me cute. I felt like Rudolph when Clarice called him cute for the first time. Didn't say it back.
A few days later, he kept calling me cute. I would say things like, "right back attcha" or "you too" without actually saying he was cute. Eventually, I did say he was cute. His response was, "I've always thought you were cute, in a big way"
I asked why he waited so long to tell me. He told me, "it was hard to say anything when I was dating your roommate."
I tried getting to know him better that night. Conversation wasn't the best. ¿But he tried?
Chapter 5: Devils in the Details
As time went on, snaps got more flirtatious. I would use the different filters and just send them because they're fun.
James called me sexy after one of them and I immediately cringed. To me, being called sexy is a major turn off. When you've been catcalled too many times, it just gross. Didn't say anything about it and moved on.
Another night, similar thing. I used the devil horn filter and he responded with, "ya make a sexy devil" and I about puked. Told him I don't like that. He was fine with it.
But then, he asked to see more of what was under the blanket. I don't wear a shirt when I sleep, but I made sure to always cover my chest when snapping him. My response to that was, "not today buddy boy."
After I left my job, I went out to a disco with friends. Sent him some snaps. Was super hung over the next morning. Was in the shower and sent him a few snaps. I was wearing a shower cap and looked like a drenched raccoon. He said, "I wish I was in there with ya." First of all, nope. Second of all, I was hung over AF. Told him, "no you don't."
The next morning, I go to the gym. Got in one last session before flying up north. Sent some sassy pics from the gym. Got home and James sent me, "that gym fit got me feelin some type of way 🥵." I was busy packing, changed outfits, and kept talking.
By the time I got to the airport, he was at work. I was excited to go north and see all my friends. Sent James, Inez, and other friends some snaps updating them on how my travels were going.
When I got to my destination, I heard nothing. He sent me a picture of the boat and that was it. That's when I caught my girls up.
Chapter 6: I had Marvelous Time Ruining Everything
While eating dumplings, I told my girls that I might be going on a date while I was there. I told them with James. My one friend wanted to tell Inez, since she was close with him. I told her, I want to tell her.
We talked about why he was a walking red flag. I wasn't looking to date date him, just go on some dates to feel good about myself (the last time I went on a date was in 2018. His name was JimBob. Deadass). Anyway. We finish the dumplings and go back to where I'm staying.
We call Inez.
Inez tells me that James has a girlfriend. I'm in denial. You don't tell a girl she's sexy, that you had dreams about her, that you want to shower with her, that your favorite shirt of hers is when she wasn't wearing any, when you are already in a long term relationship with another girl.
But he did.
We were all trying to figure out if they had broken up or not. Inez asked her boyfriend and he said Betty and James were still together.
James lived with Betty in her apartment.
James snapped me daily from Betty's bathroom... Betty's bed!
I found out that James cheated multiple times on my roommate. That he would ghost girls. That I was Agusta. I was the other girl. We wanted to expose him.
That would have worked if he ever responded to me.
Inez lost so much respect for James. She went to work and he could tell she was visibly pissed at him. He was concerned that his best friend was upset with him.
Few days later I was with all my girls and Inez snapped him from my phone pretending it was from her phone. He responded with the boat. She talked to him after she left.
The next day was wack.
Inez and I met for dinner. She told me that her conversation with James went something like this
"James we need to talk.
I have a feeling I know what this is about, so let me just tell you...
I should have never reached out to Agusta. Betty and I were going through a rough patch and things are getting better now."
I was furious.
The following day I snap James. I said, "hey. Instead of just ghosting me, I would like to talk about everything that's happened in person. Let me know when you're free."
He ghosted me.
Eventually, I photographed the wedding and flew home.
No other word from James since.
But now I debate on how I move along in life. Do I email Betty telling her what happened? Do I post that he's a cheater anonymously on the Facebook community page? Do I black mail him into paying for my gym membership? Do I send this story to an influencer on Instagram and have them help me share this without using the city or his last name and expose him to the whole world? How do I help Karma speed up the process?
If anything else comes up, I'll write chapter 7.
Thank you for reading about my life from March-August 2023.
Much love,
~ Agusta

content warning: Auschwitz, Shoah, subject of WP article survived the Holocaust
She survived Auschwitz. Now she’s teaching Gen Z about it — on TikTok.

Viewers frequently flood Tova Friedman’s TikTok account with probing questions: Why didn’t she try to escape from Auschwitz? Could she hear people screaming from the gas chambers? Were there any times when she almost died but got a second chance?
With the help of her 17-year-old grandson, the 84-year-old tries to convey the grim reality of Auschwitz, a Nazi death camp in Poland, while avoiding graphic language that might scare her young viewers.
“I don’t want to turn them off, so I have to be careful a little bit how to do it,” Friedman said. “I’m very careful in choosing my vocabulary.”
Nearly 500,000 people have subscribed to Friedman’s TikTok account, previously reported by NorthJersey.com, since she and her grandson, Aron Goodman, launched the page in fall 2021. They said they’re trying to counter online Holocaust denial and misinformation by sharing Friedman’s firsthand experience — ensuring that the truth lives on, even with antisemitic views widespread in the United States.
“I have a terrific obligation to speak,” Friedman said in an interview. “I don’t have survivor’s guilt, but I have survivor’s obligation, so that I speak to remember.”
Born in Poland on the cusp of World War II, Friedman was forced by Nazis first into a Jewish ghetto and then into Auschwitz. At age 6, she was released from a gas chamber for reasons she still does not know. She once hid next to a still-warm corpse to evade Nazis gathering prisoners for a death march, according to her memoir, and she eventually gained her freedom when Auschwitz was liberated in 1945.
In most of her TikTok videos, Friedman perches on a couch at Aron’s home in Morristown, N.J., and speaks directly to the camera. She also invites her audience into various other settings, including a radio recording studio and a float in a pro-Israel parade.
One post shows Friedman holding up her sleeve as the camera zooms in on the Auschwitz identification number tattooed on her forearm: A-27633. In another video, Friedman holds up the Red Cross card that she used to travel after the Holocaust ended.
TikTok not long ago was totally unfamiliar to Friedman, who initially thought Aron was saying “Tic Tac.” Aron said he recently had to explain to her why they can’t edit a live video like they do to other posts.
But Friedman said her grandson has made adjusting to the platform as painless as possible. He coaches her to make the most of the videos’ short time frame and edits the posts afterward. When she feels uncomfortable while recording, they stop.
Aron also shields Friedman from the antisemitic remarks that their account sometimes receives and said he tries not to dwell on them himself. While much of TikTok’s content is positive, antisemitic extremists have sometimes co-opted the platform to spread hateful content and conspiracy theories, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
“Those give me fuel to try to continue this work,” Aron said. “For the most part, I think about the positive impact we have,” including a message from a teacher in India who wanted to use some of the account’s material for her class.
Holocaust education in Aron’s own classes has been limited, he said. While TikTok videos can’t replace widespread lessons in schools, Aron said he hopes his account will inspire young people to learn further on their own. Friedman, who works as a therapist, also speaks frequently to students and other groups.
All of it, she said, is meant to make people understand the perils of unbridled loathing.
“It’s a warning to be careful with the hatred that you feel about somebody or something,” Friedman said. “It’s okay to feel dislike. … But it’s a different thing to act on it.”
While Aron and Friedman try to expand their content to Instagram and other platforms, they’re also figuring out the future of the “TovaTok” account. Aron is set to leave New Jersey for college in St. Louis this fall, and he’s unsure what that means for the project. He might expand the account to include interviews with other Holocaust survivors, he said, or make videos with his grandmother over FaceTime.
Friedman, for her part, isn’t ready to throw in the towel on their TikTok page.
“I just want to speak as long as I can and reach as many people as is possible as long as I’m alive,” she said.

Saucy, am I making it up or is there an interview/comments out there somewhere about Scott being with Tessa when she woke up from her second surgery?
That was both a long and predictably bizarre trip down Fan Forum memory lane trying to find the quote lol. I knew the era but wasn’t sure specifically and wowzee that was a wild ride. Don’t know if there’s an active link anymore to an article, but it was copy and pasted to the site.
Surgery Isn’t Holding Virtue Back// Winnipeg Sun
They don't come any tougher than Tessa Virtue.
Hardly a day or night went by where her legs weren't in pain as she and Scott Moir ice danced to Olympic gold glory at Vancouver in February.
"It was pretty constant," the 21-year-old Londoner said Friday en route to Kingston to watch Skate Canada International this weekend. "Even just walking for 10-15 minutes, I'd feel it. I knew something was wrong but I really just tried to deny the pain, even to myself.
"It wasn't really diagnosed. I just tried to shut it out and skate."
Earlier this month, Virtue underwent surgery in London for the second time in three years related to chronic exertional compartment syndrome in her shins and calves.
Going under the knife again has put her skating season in jeopardy. However, the stakes aren't nearly as high as they were in the year leading up to the Olympics.
"I'm not looking that far ahead (to 2011 nationals in Victoria, B.C., or worlds in Nagano, Japan. March 21-27)," Virtue said. "Right now, I'm looking forward to feeling healthy again. That's my goal, to take some time and heal. It's basically been go-go-go since we won. We had a little bit of time off but not a lot so this might end up turning into a blessing in disguise."
Virtue's original surgery in 2008 allowed her to continue competing at the highest level. This most recent one was to reduce the lingering pain she felt as a result of the compartment syndrome.
"The first one, because of the timing, I tried to get back as soon as I could," she said. "I didn't want to disappoint anyone. This time, it's a bit of a different situation."
The next Olympics aren't until 2014 in Sochi, Russia.
Her partner Moir, the 23-year-old Ilderton native, was at Virtue's bedside when she woke up in the hospital recovery room.
"It was great to see him there," she said. "When you're leaving the hospital, it's nice to have someone there who's used to lifting you."
Kevin Willits, a Fowler-Kennedy Clinic surgeon, performed both of Virtue's surgery. He's also a Western Mustangs football assistant coach.
"The Mustangs football team won the weekend before my surgery," Virtue said, "so I felt like he was going into the surgery in a good mood, which I felt good about."
Moir took a week off before returning to solo training at the Arctic Figure Skating Club in Canton, Mich., in case the couple returns to action later in the season.
"I know he's doing a lot of off-ice training but I don't know if he is (skating with a hockey stick or sandbag as a partner like last time)," Virtue said with a laugh. "I don't want to know."
This summer, Virtue and Moir were committed to launching a new campaign with fresh programs and defending their world title. But Virtue's pain continued through a pre-season high-performance camp at Mississauga in September and Skate Canada's new chief medical officer Marni Wesner ordered additional tests.
Increased pressure levels in her calves from the compartment syndrome were discovered. The decision was made to undergo surgery now rather than following this season.
"I'm still taking classes at University of Windsor so it's allowed me to focus more on that," she said, "and I'm going to cheer on the rest of the Canadian skaters. I'm still working hard to get healthy. I just had a three-and-a-half hour session at Fowler-Kennedy and with my physical therapist (Mary Brannagan) in Windsor, I'm in really good hands."
Virtue and Moir will continue to engage their off-ice commitments.
The duo has a Steve Milton-penned book set to launch called "Tessa and Scott: Our Journey from Childhood to Gold."
"It was really special for Scott and I to sit down and re-live a lot of the things we went through that we never really had a chance to discuss even with ourselves," she said. "It was a fun experience."

The unyielding Georgia heat was relentless, but as the sun set, it provided a welcome break from its harsh rays. The inability of a specific midfielder to execute a well-crafted set piece had intensified the evening's practice session. Despite feeling the frustration surging through her veins and the sting of irritated determination that had caused dark hues to glisten, Mac had bit her tongue and acted how any player would with an eye for the arm band.
Arguably, it was another's presence that had been the most challenging part of the training session. She'd read the woman's name on a list of players invited to the Georgia training camp, but it was one thing to read it and another to see her in the flesh. Nadine's comforting clutch at the bend of her arm had anchored her upon first glance, but it was a deeper desire for success that forced the long running fire within her to simmer beneath her skin.
Two seasons of her National career had been spent on the sidelines because of the reckless forward that would inevitably become her teammate. People could say what they wanted about the fiery forward, as could Mac, but no one could deny the talent that Diana Lennox possessed. It was the kind of skill that didn't come from overly expensive training camps or years of working hard. It was the kind written into one's genetic code.
Natural or not, talent could only carry a club so far. Winning on team level was a science. It was equal parts talent, chemistry, and communication. The first of the three was of no concern to the forward, but the other two? Well, the bitter coating that sat on her tongue for the entirety of the practice was a worrisome feat. How could she play with the woman who'd put a gap in her career? The same woman who'd traveled with the very club they were both aiming to make years later?
Mac shifted in the booth, desperate for the whole thing to swallow her whole as she temporarily tore her gaze away from the other. Had her statement been the most diplomatic? No. Did she give a shit? Also no.
Amusement washed over her features and spite spiked her veins. Maybe the coach would understand if things went sideways? The brunette took a beat, allowing the air from her lungs to ghost quietly through her nose. So, maybe her therapist wasn't entirely wrong about breathing exercises. "Look, I was just saying that you don't have to sit here just because Wu called you over. She has this thing about getting to know people better and I guess you were her lucky pick of the night."
It wasn't the fire she'd wanted to spew, but it was the higher road and the higher road sucked. "On second thought, I think Wu was onto something." She spotted lingering gazes, each probably wondering what would happen next. After all, the history between them was far from private. For a couple of back to back seasons, their teams had battled it out for the biggest win of all, but it wasn't that rivalry that caused the potential members of the squad to wait with a bated breath.
"Gives me a chance to offer a bit of advice." Mac eyed the other side of the booth with a grin, the offer seeming more like a silent order. "Unless that whole thing about your interest in my leadership abilities was bullshit?"
The day's labors weighed heavy in Diana's body, her limbs leaden with exhaustion. The national team's training camp was well underway, and every session saw her pushing the boundaries of her physical health as a means to prove herself to the coaching staff, but also to distract from the more mind-numbing aspects of it all.
Namely, the cliquey exclusiveness that seemed to develop every time she had been called up to the national team, no matter how many pleasantries were uttered by players through the media about the inclusivity of team dynamics. It all started here and now, during camp, when the veterans reunited and assessed the incoming talent for threats. Diana had been given her share of once-overs during her first appearance at the state-of-the-art facility in Georgia, but the looks and whispers had only fueled her. One of the trainers had advised her, in good faith, to bite her tongue and keep going.
God knows she had done her share of tongue-biting already, and they were only in their second week.
One of the midfielders — Mullins, she recalled, having lowly uttered blonde's surname like an insult — had struggled to grasp the mechanics of the set pieces the group had been practicing through the better part of their afternoon session. For such straight-forward strategies, the play collapsed nearly every single time the ball was kicked in. The head coach had called for laps in lieu of any further attempts, and in response, Diana had kicked her water bottle in frustration, sending it several feet along the sidelines — thankfully, out of notice of the head coach.
Slick with sweat and jaw sore from grinding her molars in anger, Diana had retired to the showers to rinse off. When she returned to the locker room, the conversation had turned to post-session plans, with a majority of the squad organizing a trip to a local diner that served breakfast fare around the clock. The lure of bacon and waffles, even burnt and mediocre, and company, overruled all instincts to return to the silence of her accomodations to decompress.
The diner, a greasy spoon-looking establishment that was no more than two stars on any epicurean aggregator, was nearly thirty minutes away. Riding passenger-side in Butler's rental car, with Lewis and Williams tucked in the narrow backseat, Diana scrolled through a handful of reviews before her attention drifted to the car's discussion about the team's outlook. Lewis, ever the gossip, couldn't hide her curiosity when she brought up how blatant it was that Eriksson was vying for the captain's armband.
"Lennox has gotta have something to say about that," Williams chuckled, earning a snort from Butler.
"Yeah," Lewis needled, "what do you think, Di?"
"I don't think about MacKenzie Eriksson," Diana replied evenly with a shrug, earning a chorus of whoops and laughter from the car, and turned her attention back to her phone, to the diner menu.
At the diner, the players dispersed. Diana ducked into the restroom to wash her hands and fix her hair. When she returned to the bustling restaurant, everyone had more or less settled into seats. She scanned the room, searching for her usual seatmates, but was distracted by the call of her name from a booth nearby. Wu, a national team veteran and league Defender of the Year for several years running, had beckoned her over to where she was sitting with Eriksson.
Speak of the devil, Diana thought, her gaze sliding over the brunette that had been the subject of conversation on the ride over to the raven-haired defender.
In a maneuver that felt almost orchestrated, Wu waited until she was seated before quickly excusing herself, leaving Diana face-to-face with the last person she wanted to spend time with. And the feeling was seemingly mutual, with Eriksson offering her an assurance that the Texan didn't need to sit with her. Diana didn't have to turn her head and place Butler in the diner to know that the cackle that erupted belonged to the goalkeeper, timed eerily well with Eriksson's derisive remark about her taking someone out in practice.
"Isn't leading by example one of the core principles of being a captain?" Diana asked, eyebrows furrowed in feigned confusion. "I would think that, for someone chasing the armband, you'd be a little less condescending and a little more focused on setting an example. Or is having your head up your morally-superior ass just part of the leadership we can expect from you?"

Andrea Bieger and the Mysteries of the Dumpster Fire History
The Beijing Olympic Quad was the beginning of the height of Marta Karolyi’s power over elite gymnastics in the United States. The US had won it’s first team world championship gold at home in 2003, and the first Olympic all around champion at a non boycotted Olympic Games in 2004.
Marta Karolyi’s whims could put you on teams or leave you off. At the 2006 World Championships two US gymnasts Natasha Kelley and Ashley Priess “disappointed” in qualification and they weren’t just not used in the team finals but their names weren’t even listed on the forms for the team final. Erased from existence. A move that should have gotten Marta fired because if you don’t list an athlete on the forms you can’t use them and if there had been an injury (as there was) in that team final the US couldn’t have used either young woman as an reserve athlete. Nastia Liukin, who could barely walk at the time was put down as a reserve for vault, beam, and floor when all she could perform was bars. When the 2005 world all around champion Chellsie Memmel had a shoulder injury during her bars routine there was no other choice but to have her continue on to perform beam and floor. There was literally no other option.
Despite the fact that Marta being a vindictive woman nearly losing the US a medal there were no consequences for that incident.
The top US athlete at the 2006 worlds was Jana Bieger who won the silver medal in the all around behind legend Vanessa Ferrari. She wasn’t flashy like Nastia Liukin or the all american kid like Shawn Johnson. In fact she was, as NBC liked to remind people, born in Germany. Her mother, Andrea Bieger was a 1976 Olympian for West Germany. She finished 12th in the Montreal AA as the top non eastern bloc gymnast. She was the West German national champion and almost certainly would have gone to the 1980 Olympics were it not for the boycott. In Germany she trained as a sports medicine doctor and physical therapist before immigrating to the United States in 1996 with her two children.
Jana was coached by her mother (the 2008 quad had an absurd amount of top gymnasts coached by their parents including 4 on the US team alone and something like 8 total among the top of the sport at the time).
Larry Nassar was known to have been less active during this period of time than before or after. There has been a lot of speculation as to why. His own child was young at the time and maybe he wasn’t around as much. I’ve seen a lot of speculation that he was scared of Valeri Liukin who was coaching his daughter Nastia as the formidable Soviet coach. Another member of the Beijing olympic team was the daughter of a senior USAG official and that might have scared him. Or it might be the actual sports medicine doctor who was attending national team camps. Or a combination of the above.
But after an injury in early 2007 Jana Bieger was on the outside looking in at the Olympic hopefuls. She ended up as an alternate. But watching 2008 US Nationals I’ve never felt so much like there was an external finger on the scale of the judging as at this competition. The biggest names and favorites were given unexplainable gifts. She was being judged perhaps not harshly outside of this context but not to the same standard as her competitors. Like the judges had been told to low ball her by Marta.
And I can’t help but wonder if Dr. Andrea Bieger was a threat to Marta Karolyi who wouldn’t have been able to bully or bullshit her the way she had so many others.

day nine rolled around and for once, shane had actually slept during the night. sure, it was only a couple of hours, but it was better than nothing. she woke up to the sun raising up over the horizon and feeling strangely rested despite how little she actually slept. if she was at home and being honest with her therapist, which was rare to start, he would tell her that she was in the start of a manic episode after how low she had been the past two days. but shane wasn’t home and she wasn’t going to let this energy get away from her just to feel like shit again. so instead, she got up from where she had been sleeping in the sand, taking a moment to stretch her stiff limbs before walking towards the water. once away from the group, she stripped down to her sports bra and boxers and washed them off in the ocean. not as good as if they actually had soap, but it was good to get all the sand and dirt off even if just for a couple hours. with her clothes drying against a rock in the morning sun, shane sat braiding her hair, lost in thought of what to get done today as she waited.
once she was dressed again, shane actually started to feel more like herself than she has this whole time. again, it was probably because she was manic, but she didn’t want to think about that. she walked back to camp, seeing some of the others waking up. “i’m going to go see if i can find some more food. any volunteers to help out?” she asked when she was close enough for them to hear her, putting on the same voice she reserved for her teammates when passing along whatever play their coach wanted them to do.
