@shadowedlights liked for a starter Rey to Ben Solo
Tumblr media
"I never gave up hope that I'd see you again." Rey breathlessly relates. There's something magnetic about his presence, his alone, that keeps her spellbound and entranced. Their bond, as terrifying as it was, proved only to intrigue her. Was he a FORCE projection? Really there? Rey could not immediately discern. She steps forward, a quavering hand tentatively outstretched towards him.

I know The Founders Cut, generally, is the edited scrubbed over version of genloss from Showfall in-universe (as well as a not-8-hour-long-three-stream-binge-night whenever we want to watch it again) but something that struck me as odd and I havenā€™t seen anyone mention yet, is this warning
Tumblr media
It shows up right at the junction where the third act starts, where it appears the Hero is breaking free of Showfall thanks to Hetch. But hereā€™s the thing, while a LOT less than the previous acts the audience still played a significant role in this act, even when really only given two audience interaction choices. Which makes me wonder, how real is this warning, and who is it for? Obviously the audience involved knows what happens past this point, but the audience is also implied to be an integral part of the Social Experiments, which is part of why things start to tweak out when the Founder removes them in the Founder Cut as the Generation Loss generation loses.
My first thought, was that obviously this is another bait and switch, a way to draw the audiences attention, seeing something thatā€™s secret, something thatā€™s not ā€œmeant for themā€, which is a tactic I could see Showfall using in universe to keep peopleā€™s attention and add an air of mystery to their shows.
But
Showfall is doing all their experiments and these shows with a LOT of help from their censors to show it off, displaying a fun silly show that is definitely not uber fucked up and that is 100% just slime donā€™t worry about it, itā€™s kid friendly if itā€™s green! And I donā€™t think theyā€™d want to bet all their cards on this one experiment doing well enough to their audience to not question the sudden shift in tone that follows this warning. Which makes me wonder.
They did their test, they did their experiment, and the evidence of this last act? I think it was a one time run, they donā€™t want anyone seeing this, it isnā€™t for the audience. Act three is specifically to both test and play with their Hero, Hetchā€™s new lines add a level to this, never once does he call the Hero by their name, just refers to Ranboo as their Role, and heā€™s not exactly. Nice? About literally any of Ranboos concerns, which wouldnā€™t really seem conductive to making an audience trust him, especially with his monologue at the end. Ranboo has escaped before, possibly right before act 1 started, they tightened the security on his mask to be unremovably part of them, Hetch doesnā€™t like the Hero but theyā€™re a fan favorite so he canā€™t just get rid of them.
Act three is the cumulation of Ranboo being punished for things they donā€™t remember, for daring to break free from Showfalls control, this is Hetch taking the Hero and essentially majorly fucking and manipulating them to take his frustration out on a fan favorite they canā€™t otherwise get rid of or give a smaller role like Slimecicle. which is exemplified by the fact that we now know Charlie most likely was never able to actually able to fully snap out of the control, that even in act three in panic and confusion there was at least still a part of him being influenced by Showfall.
So the first two acts are the usual show, they have their posters, they have Squiggles to introduce them, they have goofs and silliness and only a couple slip ups thatā€™re quickly dealt with, the usual rose tinted curtains. Act three?

Hereā€™s a sort ofā€¦. Prompt? Headcanon? Idea?? For Danny Phantom.
Letā€™s go with the,, semi-fanon idea of cores. We see the Far Frozen with ice powers, with their whole little civilization. They are ALSO the only ghosts we see that have any medical knowledge.
So what if ghosts with ice cores had healing powers? Danny is very durable, but he also (probably) has advanced healing.
Idk, itā€™d be a fun possibility to explore Danny ā€˜plays as a tank in irl superheroics 4 times out of 5ā€™ Phantom finding out he can heal people while doing a school-mandated cpr class.

febuwhump day 2 -- holding back tears
isha: a Hass term of endearment meaning "my heart" canon status: canon (outtake) pov character: jack words: 1.7k
the raedoran cycle
Jack slips through the stable doors, ducking behind a stack of hay bales when the door into the inn swings open, allowing light and the raucous sound of laughter to spill out into the stables. The inn is still crowded, so Eima will still be at the bar and Kamon will likely be with her, supervising. Heā€™ll start clearing them all out within an hour, so Jack doesnā€™t have a lot of time. The real trick will be getting into the private quarters at the back of the building without Kamon seeing him.
He climbs out the back window of the stables and up onto its roof, finding the loose windowpane on the second-floor corridor and wedging it open. He slides in silently and pulls the window back into place. Thereā€™s another loose window, this one due to a few chips heā€™d taken out of the sill over the course of several visitsā€”he checks that no one is looking, then climbs out the window and onto the thin overhang over the window directly below. His arms burn when dangles from the overhang, his muscles protesting that itā€™s been a long time since heā€™s done this, and it takes him longer than it used to to get the final window open with his foot. He manages not to drop himself into the lake and swings back into the inn, landing gracefully on the wooden floor of the private living quarters for Mejaā€™s family.
The door to the younger childrenā€™s room is shut and Jack makes his way carefully around the creaky floorboards, ears perked for any sound. The noises of the innā€™s patrons are muted back here. He sees a light under Mejaā€™s door and feels his stomach drop, a part of him wanting to turn and run. But the rest of him desperately needs her comfort right now, so he steps up to the door.
ā€œKamon?ā€ Mejaā€™s voice calls, and Jack nearly loses his nerve. ā€œIs that you?ā€
He pushes open the door and she looks up from her seat on the edge of her bed, her hair hanging loose around her face. Sheā€™s in her dressing gown, a comb in one hand, and pauses when she sees him standing in the doorway. She blinks, and Jack swallows nervously. ā€œIā€™ve been told I look like him,ā€ he says, attempting one of his roguish smirks and knowing heā€™s failing.
Meja just smiles softly, gesturing for him to come sit. He shuts the door quietly, not wanting to wake the sleeping children down the hall, and sits on the bed at her side.
ā€œYou look tired,ā€ she says, winding her arms around him in a tight hug. He doesnā€™t answer, leaning into the hug, and she runs her fingers down his spine. ā€œIā€™ll make you something to eat.ā€
He nods, burying his face in her hair. She still smells of spices from whatever sheā€™d cooked for the inn, and the faintest hint of lake water. She squeezes him once and lets go, winding her shawl around her hair with a practiced twist. Jack follows her back down to the empty kitchen and hops up onto the counter to watch as she glides around the cramped space, lighting the fire and chopping ingredients and swiftly sending one of the little ones back upstairs when he comes down looking for the sweets. He still remembers the day she found him, and the little pot of sweet elderflower jam sheā€™d given him to eat. Kamon was always so exasperated when he realized Jack had eaten it all again, and Meja only ever smiled and said that perhaps Jack had a little Hass blood after all. Sheā€™d never been fazed by his failings, or his thievery, or the times that he came to her with bloody knuckles and a bloody lip and she had to patch up his injuries before he let Arthur see. And now heā€™s come home, after disappearing for months and never sending word, and all she wants to do is make him dinner.
He presses his hands to his eyes, sniffing in a pathetic attempt to keep the tears in. He hears the gentle clink of Meja setting down her knife and her fingers wrap around his, peeling his hands away from his face. He keeps his eyes closed, not wanting to see whatever expression is on her face.
ā€œIsha, whatā€™s wrong?ā€ she asks, and she sounds so worried and sad and he hates himself, because he has never deserved having her in his life. Kamon was right that first dayā€”he is a demon in human skin, here to trick her into caring about him only to break her heart. ā€œAre you hurt?ā€
ā€œAre you not angry with me?ā€ he asks, his voice trembling. Her hands are still wrapped around his, and he feels no reaction to his words. ā€œI...why arenā€™t you angry with me?ā€
He can hear the smile in her voice. ā€œDo you wish for me to be angry with you, isha?ā€ She lets go of his hand to pat his cheek. ā€œBjerkja heard my prayers, and delivered you to my door unharmed. What do I have to be angry about?ā€
He shakes his head, still refusing to open his eyes. ā€œI disappeared. I never sent word.ā€
ā€œYou know I canā€™t read,ā€ she laughs, but he only winces. She sighs and switches to Hassa. ā€œMy beautiful son, I could never be angry with you. Whatever sins you think you committed, you will forever be innocent in my eyes.ā€ She squeezes his hand and lets go. He opens her eyes to see her return to her cooking, the smell of it filling the room. Jack watches her work, tears stinging the backs of his eyes but never falling, and thinks of the way she used to tuck him into the hay of the stables, wrapped in furs, and sing him a lullaby until he fell asleep. He remembers the day he realized she was hiding him from the city guard, when he woke up to her voice arguing with Kamonā€™s about the danger he was putting the two of them in, and their family. When he heard the clanking of armor as their voices fell silent, and when Kamonā€™s voice lied for him, protecting him despite shouting only minutes before that he was demon and a curse.
ā€œYou wonā€™t be able to tell me about your adventures on an empty stomach,ā€ Meja teases, pushing a bowl of rice and vegetables topped with fried fish into his hands and breaking him from his melancholy thoughts. ā€œEat before you wither away before my very eyes!ā€
He laughs and her eyes crinkle with her smile. He devours the food quickly, having missed the rich spices and flavors of her cooking. Birdieā€™s stews are fine, but she learned to cook from her father, and he had clearly never met a spice rack. Mejaā€™s cooking is a royal feast, and the bowl is empty quickly. Jack wipes his hands on a rag Meja hands him and leans back, still perched on the counter. ā€œI can see the inn is doing well.ā€
ā€œI donā€™t want to talk about the inn,ā€ Meja sighs, pulling him down from the counter. She drags him over to the table tucked in the corner where the family eats and sits him down, examining him more closely in the brighter light under the lanterns. ā€œI want to hear all about your adventures.ā€ Her eyes roam over his face, as if sheā€™s trying to find any differences since she saw him last. ā€œIs Arthur still with you?ā€
ā€œYes,ā€ he says, and she smiles widely. ā€œHeā€™s doing well; Iā€™m sure heā€™ll stop by in the next day or two.ā€
ā€œWhenever,ā€ Meja says with a dismissive wave of her hand. ā€œWhat exploits have the two of you been up to? You look wiser.ā€
Jack smiles, sure that sheā€™s exaggerating. ā€œI met a witch and two dragons,ā€ he says. ā€œI befriended one of the dragons and the witch, and Iā€™m doing a pretty good job convincing the other dragon not to kill me.ā€
ā€œYouā€™ve always been my little troublemaker,ā€ Meja laughs. ā€œWitches and dragons; next youā€™ll tell me youā€™ve slain a sea serpent!ā€
ā€œPerhaps on my next adventure,ā€ Jack says, pretending to be disappointed. She tugs on his ear affectionately and listens as he tells her about Birdieā€™s cottage, and Fabin and Emilia, and the magic that Arthur has been learning. She gets up at one point and produces a platter of fried dough dusted in powdered sugar practically from nowhere, the two of them slowly picking away at the sweets while Jack tells her his stories.
ā€œMeja, are you in here?ā€ Kamon calls, and Mejaā€™s eyes soften, her whole frame relaxing just a bit. Jack wonders if he looks like that when Arthur walks into a room. He doesnā€™t turn to the door, where he knows Kamon is standing and looking at the two of them. Heā€™s not sure heā€™s ready to face Kamonā€™s reaction to his return.
ā€œKamon,ā€ Meja says. ā€œLook who Bjerkja brought back to us.ā€
Jackā€™s shoulders tense as Kamonā€™s footsteps cross the room to him. He gulps and keeps his eyes on the platter of sweets when Kamon pauses right next to him, smelling of lakewater and leather. He can feel his eyes on the side of his head but he isnā€™t ready, he doesnā€™t want it to hurt yet.
ā€œDammit, Jack, look at me,ā€ Kamon says, and Jack snaps his gaze to his face. Kamon grins at him despite the tears sliding down his cheeks. ā€œFuck, kid, you scared us. Iā€™m so happy youā€™re safe.ā€
He leans down to grab Jack in a crushing hug, pulling him halfway out of his seat. Jack blinks, feeling tears well up in his eyes again, and it takes him a second to remember how to hug. He buries his face in Kamonā€™s shoulder and tries not to cry.
ā€œIā€™m sorry,ā€ he gasps, without realizing the words are spilling from him. ā€œIā€™m sorry.ā€
ā€œWhat for?ā€ Kamon asks, without letting go of him. ā€œYouā€™re here, arenā€™t you?ā€
ā€œIā€™m a curse on your family.ā€ Jack gulps in shaking breaths. ā€œIā€™m a curse.ā€
ā€œYou are our family,ā€ Kamon says, and Mejaā€™s arms wrap around them as well. ā€œThe accident of your birth will never change that.ā€
Jack finally lets himself cry, sinking into their hold.

The Fernweh Saga by @lacunafiction - Davor edition
Tumblr media
I-I think Ms. Verner doesn't like him...šŸ˜³
Tumblr media
Davor "Dove" Kovač šŸ RO: Becca Warrick
Personality: cautious // aloof // pessimistic // flirtatious (only towards Becca ...and Reese??) Traits: head // independent // resistance // believer Past affinity: math Primary ability: extrasensory awareness Past susceptibility: forward. 'itā€™s better to push forward. donā€™t look back on the past when you have new places to be and things to achieve.' <<< his motto
Tumblr media
šŸ•Šļø Fernweh: Davor lived a happy life there and didn't think about leaving in the future. Maybe for some trips, but he knew it would always be his place, hisĀ safeĀ place... 'It was a mistake to come back here.' - that was his first thought when he tried to fall asleep on the first night in Fernweh. The nightmares came back as he thought they would. He wants to leave as soon as possible because heĀ feelsĀ that it is not safe for Becca to be here.
šŸ•Šļø Gramps Dan: That was his gramps who taught Davor how to play the guitar. As a young child, Davor always admired him and believed he was the most intelligent person in the world. After the death of his parents and how his grandfather treated him, he was devastated and angry. He wanted answers soo badly but didn't get any. He lived loathing his grandfather ever since. The news of his passing stirred up a lot of negative emotions that Davor had previously managed to suppress. At the beginning of the story he couldn't care less about his grandfather, but because of his journal he started to believe him. Things that his granfather lived through made Davor even more angry at this messy town ā€¦but he's willing to forgive his grampsā€¦
šŸ Becca Warrick: It was a ...funnyĀ story that brought both of them together and they look after each other ever since. He considers Becca as his precious (not in a negative-possessive way) treasure, he literally can't let anything bad happen to her. That was also she who came up with the nickname 'Dove'... (and she's literally the only person who calls him that, others wouldn't dare...). He had feelings for her for quite some time but didn't act on it...Ā until now. Although he didn't express it, he felt very nervous about Becca being in the town where he grew up. He was curious (but also scared) about what she could think of this town. He felt like he was revealing more of himself to herā€¦. and he forgot about any worries pretty fast, because the town started being weird as fu--.
šŸ•Šļø Reese Verner: Back then Davor was quite cheerful and enjoyed competing with Reese regularly. They teased each other a lot. Davor always thought that Reese had a crush on him, was it true tho? donut know, but he certainly had. ...why does he appear in his nightmares? Maybe the crush stage never disappeared...? Seeing him again was a nice experience, sure... but ignoring the circumstances, he is still unsure if it was worth it and is struggling with his thoughtsā€¦ Would it be worth it to return to Fernweh just to see him... again?Ā welp, good thing he doesn't have to think about it much, am I right?
šŸ•Šļø Sofia Dorran: The two of them maybe did not have a strong relationship, but he knew Sofia is the ideal person for engaging in intelligent conversations. He enjoyed spending time with her, solving the puzzles that gramps created for them both. Davor wasn't a fan of fantasy books, but she managed to change his mind about them. Davor knows that Sofia did take good care of his grandfather, but he still doesn't quite know if he's grateful for that or wished she spent her time more... valuably... He was tempted to ask Sofia to borrow that book she found in his grandfather's bedroom, but he thought better of it. It's better to leave Fernwehā€¦ Even so, his curiosity wasn't properly fed.
šŸ•Šļø James Corvin: Maybe not brothers by blood, but definitely brothers by choice. Davor treated him as if he was the brother he always wanted to have. Back then Davor always placed a high value on his familyā€¦ until now. At the time, Davor tended to be more impulsive and James was usually the one who kept him from getting into trouble (which often involved Reese). It was really hard, for both of them, to see each other after so long. Their first interaction was pretty awkward... I would even say that most of their interactions were . James noticed how Davor changed the question is: for the better or worse? I don't even know. Everyone can sense, that things around them are different now, and they aren't as close as before. Will it change?
šŸ•Šļø Alek Corvin: ā€¦To say that Alek wasn't a fan of Davor would be an understatement. Was it because James spent most of his time focusing only on Davor trying to get him out of trouble? Did Alek observe any possessiveness from Davor towards James? Or maybe simply because of the bond between those two, which was truly something that others would envy and desire? Davor never considered it, especially when he left Fernweh permanently. :)) As you can imagine, Alek doesn't seem very happy about Davor's returnā€¦ But he took an interest in his new friend, Becca, which did not go unnoticed by Davor and he isn't really happy about it.
šŸ•Šļø The Waitress: Oh boy, it seems that Davor has taken up a new hobby, which is glaring harshly at the waitress. He finds her mistrustful and he smells trouble. Had they met when he was younger, there may have been a slim chance of them getting along.
šŸ•Šļø Waffles!: So umā€¦ Davor has a little issue with dogs and because of that his relationship with Waffles isn't as wonderful as I wish it would be... However, I believe that with time and help from Becca, they will eventually become friends.
#actually about his scar i have this whole headcanon... featuring some...umm.. doggos and Becca... šŸ‘€ especially how they met#(Davor was always team cats but after that incident even more xD)#also ouch that naming scene it hurt me so much! but i get it ;; aaaa! Davor why are you being so problematic Waffles is wonderful!!!#it was really interesting for me to messing with Davor in nightmares and showing him Reese!! the feelings the emotions aaaa#also yeeaah Davor thought several times if it would be a good idea to come back to Re-- *cough* Fernweh... and then Becca happened...#generally speaking Davor has a keen interest in Slavic mythologies and culture particularly those from western and southern regions of-#-Europe. I imagine that his father has roots in these regions and he took great pride in his heritage. Often taking about it to Davor#...and since Sofia's a smart girl she lent Davor a fantasy book written by Slavic author who took a great inspiration from Slavic mythsšŸ‘¼šŸ˜Š#yes it was enough to change Davor's mind about fantasy books XD he never really read one before he just assumed it's BORING!#and now I'm sure he will throw questions at Sofia about this book she found even more since he's staying at Fernweh... I can imagine how-#-they both are staying up late studying it and comparing their notes... it would remind Davor about the time they were kids-#-it seems that his Gramps gave them both the last puzzle to solve... will they succeed?#and ooohh that will be a hard time for James and Davor... that rejection at the end of book one wont help them im sure XD#about Davor's 'possesivenes' over James... Davor was needy that's true but he would never think about 'stealing' James from Alek or-#-'claiming' James belongs to him. I hope im not crossing a line here but in my headcanon Alek was TOTALLY jealous over their friendship#and Alek THOUGHT that Davor was receiving more attention from James šŸ‘€#//which obv isn't true because James would never allow it. Alek is always a number one in James' heart//#in mine too I love A!!!! šŸ’– they're a BABY#but i must say that Davor didn't really think about Alek's feelings back then. he wasn't aware how Alek could feel- that's not an excuse#super curious about book two and how his relationships with every single one of them will develop!!!#fernweh saga#oc: davor kovac#no i totally did NOT change his surname..

Just Beyond My Reach, There's Someone Reaching Back For Me (speculative mario movie fic, mario & luigi centric, around 3600 words.)
[OK SO i literally could not stop thinking about this post in the mario movie tag from last week, which turned into me trying to write out my thoughts about how the scenario could unfold, which then turned into me writing a full-fledged fanfic that's over 3,000 words long??? I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. I've truly lost my common sense, but I just felt like I HAD to get this out before the movie arrives and their reunion is nothing like this in any way whatsoever.
This is a speculative fic of just one possible scenario out of millions, no actual spoilers; i'm working off info we've seen in the trailers/TV spots/promotions/etc, and all the characterization is based off those too, so it might ultimately be off-base. Please don't @ me after the movie comes out and get on my case about details being wrong! I AM IN THE PAST (and jealous of you in the future for having already seen it).
I present to you: A Version Of Mario & Luigi's Reunion in the Mario Movie That Would Cause Me Irreparable Psychic Damage.]
----
Mario hears him first. He would know that panicked yelp anywhere.Ā
By that point, heā€™s lost count of how many of Bowserā€™s minions heā€™s tried to interrogate as he fights his way through the airship. Thereā€™s so much shouting and clanging all around him, and his voice hurts from yelling loud enough to be heard over it, but he canā€™t stop. ā€œWhere do you keep prisoners? Have you seen someone who looks like me ā€” but tall, skinny, and green? If you take me to him, Iā€™ll go easy on ya, I swearā€”ā€Ā
itā€™s hard to tell if theyā€™re just refusing to answer him, genuinely donā€™t know any useful information, or canā€™t actually communicate in a way he understands ā€” probably some in each column. But heā€™s about to grab another angry Koopa by the shell and try again when thereā€™s a commotion far off in the distance. The yell that echoes out to him is faint, but it tugs hard at Mario like a rope tied around his middle. Something from his memories, the nightmares heā€™s been having this whole adventure that he hasnā€™t told Peach and Toad about. Something instantly, certainly familiar to him in a way that few things are.Ā
His heart is suddenly lodged in his throat. He barrels his way past the troops and the Kongs fighting them, moving fast towards it.
The area of the airship heā€™s in starts to slope down further ahead, surrounding a huge open space that, judging by the flickering embers in the air and heavy heat thatā€™s got him sweating through his shirt already, has a whole bunch of lava simmering at the bottom. On the other side of the chasm, there are a whole group of what look like angry blue penguins beating down some feisty stacks of Goombas with their bare flippers. Thereā€™s also what impossibly looks like a star, with a face and everything, beaming bright and doing twirling cartwheels in the air, giggling at the carnage underneath. And behind all that, he can seeā€”
Mario reacts without having to think. He jolts forward against the railing, reaches a hand out, and yells as loud as he can. ā€œLUIGI!ā€Ā
He can only see glimpses of his overalls and green hat at first amidst all the other chaos, but then pieces of the ongoing fight tumble further to either side, giving a clear view. Mario watches wide-eyed as his brother frantically swats away Goombas, shrieking and flailing his arm furiously when one snags some teeth through his sleeve until it comes loose. He looks terrified and a little queasy, but also very determined, even jumping in to help when one of the penguins gets pinned down. They seem to be working together.Ā
Luigi is here. Heā€™s really here, alive and fighting and still in one piece. Mario isnā€™t too late. It feels like a 20 pound weightā€™s suddenly gone from his back that he hadn't even realized he was carrying around.
His yell is half-drowned out by the chaos, but Luigiā€™s head still snaps up, eyes wide and stricken and bright with recognition. ā€œMario?ā€ He cries out, his voice cracking badly. He kicks another Goomba away and then starts spinning, searching the surrounding area with increasing desperation. ā€œMario!?ā€Ā
ā€œOver here!ā€ Mario wishes he had another raccoon powerup so he could just fly across the gap and reach him right then and there. He has to settle for taking off his cap and waving it in the air like a flag. ā€œLuigi! Over here!ā€Ā
Finally, their eyes meet across the gorge. Itā€™s not necessary at that point, but Luigi still tears off his own hat and starts flailing it around too overhead, as if just to make absolutely sure his brother knows where he is. ā€œMARIO!ā€ He shouts, his tired face instantly transforming into a relieved, overjoyed smile.Ā
ā€œAre you okay!?ā€Ā
ā€œY-Yeah! I mean, define ā€œokay,ā€ but I, I'm not hurt or anything like ā€” wait, how did you get here!? Weā€™re way up in the air!ā€
Marioā€™s face already hurts from how wide heā€™s grinning. ā€œNot anymore! And whaddya mean? What do ya think Iā€™ve been doing all this time? Looking for you! You donā€™t think I could find you wherever you are, even if itā€™s a million miles in the air? Give your big bro some credit, eh?ā€Ā
A laugh bursts out of Luigi, surprised and shaky. Mario has missed that sound so much. ā€œRight, right. I did thinkā€¦I mean, I hoped, orā€¦ā€ His brother shakes his head, his voice failing him. He lets out a deep breath, so deep that itā€™s almost like heā€™s been holding it in ever since they were separated, still smiling like the sun. ā€œI knew you would. Mario, you ā€” look out!ā€Ā
Mario turns just as a hammer goes whizzing past his ear, tumbling down into the lava pit. He dodges the next one more capably and then catches the third one that comes his way. In one smooth, lightning-quick motion, he throws it back at the attacking Hammer Bro, nailing him in the face and knocking him out cold.
ā€œWhoa!ā€ He turns back to see Luigi staring with his mouth agape. ā€œWhen did you learn how to do that?ā€
ā€œIt's kinda a long story!ā€ There will be plenty of time to get into all the details about his adventure when heā€™s gotten Luigi safely out of an active warzone.Ā  ā€œWhat about you? I thought you were a prisoner here!ā€Ā
ā€œI am! Or I was, I guess! We ā€” me, and the penguins, and Lumalee,ā€ he gestures wearily up overhead, where the blue star-thing is idly playing with a pinwheel that it somehow conjured out of thin air, ā€œand the others ā€” we broke out! We, ah, weā€™ve been trying to find a way outta here ever since, but this place is a maze and we need some kind of hot air balloon or one of those floating clown-car thingies to even get away in the first place, andā€”ā€
ā€œSpinies at four oā€™clock!ā€ One of the penguins shouts, at the same time that Mario yells ā€œLuigi, on your left!ā€
Luigi jolts at the sight of the three spiky, spinning shells approaching fast. He jumps high enough to leapfrog right over them all, causing them to ricochet off the wall unexpectedly and careen off the side straight into the deep pit.Ā
ā€œNice, Weegie!ā€ Mario cheers. ā€œYou always were the better jumper.ā€Ā
ā€œKeep your head in the fight, soldier!ā€ One specific penguin calls out to Luigi. Heā€™s wearing a very fancy gold crown ā€” probably their king? ā€œWeā€™re not done here yet!ā€Ā
ā€œI know, I know, but look!ā€ Luigi gestures excitedly across the chasm. ā€œMy brotherā€™s here! He made it!ā€
ā€œGood show! If heā€™s as brave as you said, he can help us beat back these dastardly troops once and for all! Weā€™ll all see the light of day again soon!ā€
The rest of the penguins cheer, thrusting their flippers victoriously into the air, and then let out a wave of new, guttural battle cries. The Penguin King smiles over at Mario and salutes him before rejoining the fray. There are more of Bowserā€™s minions crowding the walkways on both sides, Mario realizes with a newfound wave of worry. He needs to get to Luigi now.Ā
ā€œStay right there!ā€ He calls, starting to run alongside the railing. ā€œDonā€™t move! Iā€™m coming!ā€
ā€œAre you kidding!? Wait!ā€ Luigi starts running too, mirroring Mario. ā€œI can meet you faster this way!ā€Ā
Mario laughs. ā€œIf you can keep up with me!ā€Ā
ā€œYouā€™re on!ā€
The road ahead of him is pure chaos, filled with attacking enemies and whooping Kongs and weapons flying every which way, but Mario runs. He runs until his heart burns, dodging and weaving, almost tripping here and there because he canā€™t stop looking over the gap to make sure Luigiā€™s still there on the other side, stumbling his way through his own gauntlet. The two areas are winding closer together, slowly but surely. They must meet somewhere. Heā€™ll find it. He has to.
ā€œHey, Luigi!ā€ He yells, breathless and happy. ā€œRemember when we were fixing Mrs. McGradyā€™s sink a couple weeks ago and talking about the future? Did you imagine itā€™d be anything like this?ā€Ā
ā€œWhaddya think!?ā€ Luigi shouts back jokingly. ā€œI-I mean, I imagined people being mad at us, but those were customers. There was definitely a lot less lava, and magic, and crazy green pipes that send you to places from your literal nightmares!ā€ He laughs, which swiftly turns into a yelp when he has to dodge away from a red Koopa. The next words come out thicker, almost strained. ā€œMario, you, youā€™re really here, you ā€” I missed you, Iā€¦ā€
Even with the distance and the distracting noise and the heavy breathing, Mario can hear the familiar tearing in his brotherā€™s voice, and it pushes him to run faster. Luigi is so much braver than many people in their life have given him credit for, but he has a breaking point, and Mario can recognize it like the back of his own hand. Heck, he could use a good cry right about now too. They're so close. Just a little further.
Heā€™s never been the biggest hugger ā€” that title belongs squarely to Luigi, who always holds on a little too long, especially when Mario protests, swinging him up into the air until Mario has to grab him in a headlock and wrestle him down, both of them laughing by then ā€” but he genuinely doesnā€™t know how heā€™s ever going to let go of his brother again once heā€™s within armā€™s reach.Ā
ā€œI missed you too! Every day!ā€ He calls out, and if his voice cracks, well, thatā€™s okay. ā€œHold on! Itā€™s gotta be just up ahead!ā€ Thereā€™s a solid wall coming up where they wonā€™t be able to see each other across the way any longer, but the sharp curve of it looks extremely promising. ā€œIā€™ll meet you on the other side!ā€Ā
ā€œOkay!ā€Ā
The wall comes between them. Mario's finally in the clear, having left all the attackers in the dust. His legs and chest hurt, but it doesnā€™t matter. He's about to get his brother back. He feels invincible, unstoppable.
ā€œI told you, bro!ā€ He canā€™t hear Luigi at all any longer, but he shouts anyway, hoping the words reach him.Ā  ā€œEven if it didnā€™t turn out like we thought, itā€™s all gonna be okay! This is crazy stuff, but as long as we'reā€”ā€Ā
Mario turns the corner and skids to a sharp stop. The words die in his throat, turning to ash.
Bowser is in front of him.Ā
The King of the Koopas nearly fills the entire space wall-to-wall, hulking and monstrous, even bigger than what Mario imagined. He breathes out an angry, deep growl that prickles at Marioā€™s skin, star-bright embers scattering in the air, the smell of burning getting stronger and stronger. But none of that is what Mario is focusing on. Heā€™s frozen in place at the sight of Luigi, wriggling in one of Bowserā€™s gripped hands. A thick, scaly finger is coiled tight over his brotherā€™s mouth too, keeping him from making any noise besides a variety of muffled, panicked sounds.Ā
ā€œThought you didnā€™t know him, Greenie,ā€ Bowser says in a low voice to Luigi. ā€œWasnā€™t that what you said? Boy, you wouldnā€™t like what I usually do to liars. It involves fire ā€” a lot of it.ā€ His rows of sharp teeth part, just enough for a big exhale, tinged with molten heat. Luigi cringes, turning his head away as far as he can manage. Heā€™s trembling. ā€œBut lucky for you, turns out youā€™re not entirely useless.ā€
It takes a moment for Mario to come back into his body, remember how to move and think. But slowly, his hands ball into fists. A voice erupts out of him that barely sounds like his own, grave and angry, angrier than heā€™s ever been in his life.Ā
ā€œIā€™m only gonna say this once, ya overgrown turtle,ā€ he says, shifting his footing into a fighting stance. ā€œLet my brother go now.ā€Ā
Bowser looks down at him with a derisive sort of amusement for a long moment before laughing outright. "Give me a break, shortie! Youā€™re even punier in person ā€” 50 of you couldn't stop me. But that hasnā€™t stopped you from trying, has it? You and your little friends Ā ā€” your pathetic excuse for an ā€œarmy,ā€ if thatā€™s what you want to call it. But that all ends now.ā€Ā
As if on cue, Mario hears DK and a few other Kongs turn the corner, whooping and hollering, only to pause too at the sight of Bowser. ā€œLetā€™s get ā€˜em! He can't take us all at once!ā€ Someone says, and thereā€™s a rush of new movement behind Mario. Bowser turns Luigi in his hand, holding him out a little closer to Mario with a shake of the wrist ā€” a taunt. One of his claws pulls up just a little from the rest, the sharp tip arched and pressed lightly to his brotherā€™s neck. The implication is clear.Ā
ā€œStop!ā€ Mario shouts, half-strangled. He must sound serious enough that DK yells ā€œhang on, hang on!ā€ to his brethren, grabbing them with both arms and holding them back from attacking. On Bowser's other side, Mario can see the penguins watching whatā€™s unfolding too with wide eyes. Even all the minions in the area have gone still, weapons lowered, waiting to see what Bowser does before making their next move. The space is suddenly quiet.Ā
The claw finally relaxes again. Luigiā€™s eyes are very wide, and there are tears on his face as he stares at Mario. He tries to say something, the sound of it hopelessly muffled against Bowserā€™s hand ā€” an apology, or a plea, or simply Marioā€™s name.Ā
Mario is shaking. He grits his teeth hard, desperately tries to hold himself steady again. He hopes Bowser canā€™t see it ā€” but thereā€™s a gleam in the Kingā€™s eyes, and it couldnā€™t be any clearer that he does.Ā
ā€œDo you know how long I worked on this plan?ā€ Bowser says, his tone softer, more thoughtful all of a sudden.Ā  ā€œOrchestrating these invasions, gathering forces far and wide to serve me, taking the almighty power star for myself. Iā€™ve wanted this for years!ā€ His wide mouth curves up, plainly wicked and self-satisfied. ā€œAnd now here I am, about to rule the world like I deserve, and a couple of useless, pipsqueak plumbers from who-knows-where think theyā€™re just gonna waltz right in and ruin it for me.ā€ Bowser chuckles to himself. Itā€™s a dangerous, sharp-edged sound, echoing on and on. ā€œAinā€™t that a laugh, Mario?ā€Ā
Mario doesnā€™t say anything. He doesnā€™t even know if heā€™s breathing any longer. All he can do is glare.
Bowser shrugs. The large fingers on his occupied hand flex ever so slightly, a slow, malicious ripple of movement, all the scales glinting in a wave. ā€œYouā€™re less fun than I thought youā€™d be,ā€ he says gruffly. "What does the princess even see in you? A tiny little killjoy who loves ruining things for others. Guess itā€™s only fair I ruin something of yours to make us even."
Thereā€™s no further warning or fanfare. In one brutal motion, Bowser crushes his grip tighter around Luigi. His brotherā€™s mouth is still covered, but the way he cries out is starkly, unmistakably pained.Ā
Marioā€™s vision floods with red. Something inside of him, the patient, careful part that was still desperately clinging to one last scrap of self-control, snaps cleanly in two. He runs at Bowser full-speed, fist cocked back, teeth bared.Ā
ā€œI said LET HIM GO!ā€Ā
He doesnā€™t make it there. Bowser, grinning outright, moves so much faster than Mario would have ever guessed he could. He spins, and his tail comes out of nowhere. The impact is like an oncoming train, catapulting Mario into the nearby wall with a sickening crack.
Thereā€™s a horrible ringing sound in his ears. His head hurts. He hears Bowser laugh, followed by a roar and a burst of fire breath, awful-smelling and close enough to singe. Thereā€™s a lot of shouting, and panic, and thunderous footsteps, moving in a hurry. He canā€™t think any longer. Why canā€™t he think? All that comes to mind isā€”
(Theyā€™re fifteen, hiding in their bedroom with some smuggled bandages and antibiotics from the medicine cabinet because if their mom finds out Mario punched out a kid behind the school, she will LITERALLY murder him. Luigi wraps each bruised knuckle carefully as Mario winces and complains about the stinging ointment. His brother looks angrier than heā€™s ever seen him before, though, and that makes him quiet again in a hurry.)
ā€œYou want him so bad?ā€ Bowser is much further away, his voice a distant rumble over the flickering flames. Get up, Mario tells himself. Heā€™s gasping, struggling to push himself back up with useless, trembling hands. His legs feel numb. Get up! ā€œThen come and get ā€˜em already!ā€
(ā€œYou never stop and THINK first, yā€™know?ā€ Luigi shakes his head, badly trying to hide the tears budding under his eyes. ā€œAnd now youā€™re hurt, and itā€™s all my fault, and ā€” and I donā€™t need you to do stuff like that for me! I can handle it, e-even if you think I canā€™t!ā€)Ā
ā€œMario!ā€ Thatā€™s Luigi, terrified and wheezing, finally able to talk again. An intentional decision by Bowser, no doubt, just to be cruel. Mario can barely hear his brother at all, and the sound of his voice keeps growing fainter. ā€œNo! Let go! MARIO!ā€Ā
(ā€œWhat are you even saying? Thatā€™s not why I did it at all!ā€ Mario insists, using his uninjured hand to flick Luigiā€™s nose with a few fingers. His affronted expression at that makes Mario laugh, and the motion quickly turns into them trying to be the first one to swat each other in the face without getting blocked. At least the tears are forgotten, which is what he wanted from the start. ā€œDonā€™t ya get it? I know you can take care of yourself. But if anyone wants to hurt you, theyā€™re gonna have to go through me first. Iā€™M the big bro, and thatā€™s just how it is forever.ā€)Ā
Luigi!Ā
Heā€™s standing again, even as his body protests every pull and push of the way, even as heā€™s still struggling to open his eyes. Someone strong and furry offers some extra support on his right side.Ā
ā€œYou okay, man?ā€ Donkey Kong asks. ā€œGeez, that looked like it hurt. Hey, anyone have an extra mushroom?ā€Ā
Stars are flashing across his vision, but finally they fade away. Thereā€™s a line of fire in front of them like a makeshift barrier, slowly but steadily dying out. Sure enough, Bowser and Luigi are gone. Marioā€™s heart lurches hard against his ribs.
ā€œSetting a devious trap for sure,ā€ The Penguin King grouses from further away. ā€œUsing oneā€™s own flesh and blood! Does that dastardly Koopaā€™s depravity know no limits?ā€Ā
ā€œIā€™m fine. Never better,ā€ Mario groans. He points past the fire. ā€œHe went that way, right?ā€Ā
DK blinks, looking a little uneasy. ā€œUh, yeah, but we should probably regroup first and ā€” hey! Wait a second, you idiot!ā€
Marioā€™s already charged full-speed ahead, jumping over the flames. Others yell after him too, saying it's too dangerous, but heā€™s running anyway, chasing the smell of molten heat, the faint, far-off echoes of yelling that feel like pinpricks in his lungs.Ā
He knows itā€™s a trap. He knows. He just doesnā€™t care.
He already let Luigi literally slip through his hands once before. Heck, he isnā€™t sure if heā€™ll ever be able to forgive himself for that alone. No matter where he has to go, who he has to fight, how much abuse he has to take, he's getting Luigi back right now, and he's gonna pound that overgrown bully's face until he regrets every life decision that led to him daring to hurt Mario's little brother.
It can't be too late. He can't have screwed this up again. He'll do anything. Even if...
The feeling of something on his cap startles him out of the thought ā€” the softest boop-boop-boop, like someone very small is bouncing on it. He assumes heā€™s just imagining things until the blue star-thing (Lumalee?) floats down further, easily keeping up with his top speed, humming what sounds like a lullaby. Mario gawks in its direction.Ā
ā€œThe biggest sacrifices are often the ones that burn the brightest, out in space,ā€ it says, bright and sing-song. ā€œDid you know that?ā€
ā€œWhat are you even talking about!?ā€ Mario yells. ā€œSorry, but Iā€™m a little busy here!ā€Ā
Itā€™s unbothered by that, twirling close enough to give his mustache a little, playful poke. ā€œNot existing any longer is natural, inevitable. We all go into the light someday.ā€ The way itā€™s staring at Mario is unnerving, as though this little, creepy star knows exactly what he was just thinking about. ā€œYou look scared of that. Are you?ā€Ā
Mario swallows thickly.Ā
ā€œNo,ā€ he says. ā€œIf thatā€™s the only way, thenā€¦ā€ His eyes are burning at the edges, just a little. ā€œIf the people I love are safe, then it doesnā€™t matter what happens to me.ā€
Lumalee smiles a dreamy, thoughtful smile.
ā€œOh,ā€ it sighs, little more than a breath. ā€œThis is going to be so much fun.ā€Ā
And then it floats away.Ā
Mario doesnā€™t have time to stop and wonder what that was all about. He throws himself deeper and deeper into the airship, even when a heavy metal gate slams down behind him to separate him from the others, even when the slabs of rock under his feet sink down into the lava from the weight and donā€™t resurface, erasing any way out. Mario thinks of his training, of Princess Peach and Toad cheering him on, of the exhilaration and hope he felt looking out over the Rainbow Road, of Luigi smiling in the warp zone right before they were ripped apart. He steels himself for whatā€™s coming next.
Further ahead, he hears his brother call out for him.
Mario runs.

I NEED IT#even if it's just in a small moment. bowser wants to fight mario but he does NOT play fair if he thinks he'll lose. I CRAVE THE ANGST#i was actually going to go a little further with the scene and carry it all the way to bowser saying 'let's end this' like in the trailer#but i just really liked this foreboding ending note#if you are curious about what came next in my head (and also where the heck peach is in all of this) mario ends up in bowser's throne room#and sees that peach has been captured too which is a whole new fun wave of horror that he didn't know about#luigi's been thrown in with her and she's helping him because he's obviously a little hurt after being SQUEEZED#the power star hangs over bowser's throne like the chekhov's gun it is. and we begin!#(the only thing i really wanted to write that i didn't get to by cutting earlier was some more mario + bowser dialogue)#(i think mario would be too tense to say much in the scene i have but once they're squaring off he's a smartass for sure)#(he's known a lot of bullies in his life and bowser is just a much bigger scalier one)#(the title is from the song 'holding out for a hero' which apparently according to a new interview is IN the movie!)#(during mario's training montage so i started listening to it and it basically become my background music for writing this lol)#(last stupid thought before i shut up: bowser hitting mario with his tail is included because i recently played mario odyssey and bowser#kept absolutely BODYING me with that move in the end fight. i died twice because i am bad at games lololol)

i just had a dream where i had been yard sale shopping at someones house, and they had this big cardboard box full of N64 games, and on the box had the writing "3 games have water damage" and listed the serial numbers for each cartridge rather than listing the names. anyway i don't remember a lot of the cartridges names beyond one clearly being "Super Mario 64 DS", which even in the dream i was confused by. within the box was another mario title that was similar to mario pinball and mario golf, and came with a miniature set you had to put together and included little fence posts you had to click into the board to ensure the marble wouldn't fall out during play.
anyway so im curious about a lot of these N64 games, since ive never heard of them, and i wanted to see if they were custom or bootlegs. a seperate family at the sale is looking at a miniature house of sorts as im pulling out my phone to look up the names of these games. im not even able to type anything in before i hear two giant concrete cylinders hit the floor from just around the corner of the basement. that's right. the mother fucking waterwraith appeared

I started reading Birds of Prey (1999) yesterday and even if it is for awful men reasons (I need my fix of Teddy) the main ladies are very compelling and I'm reading the whole thing, not just some random appearances of Ted. Dinah can get it! Oracle can get it! I gotta draw them soon holy moly!!!! Cool women kick ass!!! Yeah!!!
Also the art is very gorgeous and the comic itself is so fun and quick to read. So far I've made it to not-Guy appearance and Catwoman was there too. And the whole 'team' is just a duo for now which kinda surprised me. I thought there were more members? I think there will be more birds eventually? But even if there won't be, a homoerotic duo of Babs and Dinah is good too! I'm not complaining!
Of course Batman made an appearance too. Booo! What a loser! I don't want to see him again (he had that yellow belt on tho which was very cool but I'm beefing with him rn cause of overexposure, I'll get over it eventually)!! Nightwing was expected too, and he looked handsome as always. He had a nice moment with Babs but also I have mixed feelings about him. I wish him well though, I won't be as mad when he appears again, which he will for sure. Dick can also get it-what, who said that????
