Steve being the one who is actually a fountain of queer knowledge because he has a gay uncle in San Francisco or New York, one of the cities that had the biggest queer communities.
Robin not having much information because she's a closeted teenage lesbian who can't drive, so she has nowhere to source that information without raising the suspicions of her parents.
Eddie doesn't have the chance because he can't afford to spend weekends in Indianapolis or Chicago, because weekends mean parties, and parties are one of the best times to deal. He might go occasionally, but just hitting up a bar to find a dude to hook up with, not getting into queer theory because he doesn't really care to. He doesn't bother to learn about hanky code or anything else, because he's not interested. All he's interested in is getting a little action.
But Steve? He spent a lot of time with his uncle, Hank, while growing up. Anytime his family was in the area, they would stay with Hank. Sure, Steve's parents would try to explain his partner, Joe, as a friend or a roommate, but Steve always knew. He could see how in love they were, even more than his parents.
It became normal for him. He heard the words that other people would throw around, how they would talk about how dangerous, how disgusting two men together was. But he couldn't understand why people thought so badly about it. Because Hank and Joe were so happy together and they weren't hurting anyone.
When he was twelve, they were the first people he told when he had the conflicting feelings of having a crush on a pretty girl named Annika in the grade above, but also really wanting to kiss Tommy every time the other boy laughed at one of his jokes. Joe and Hank just listened to him, then taught him about bisexuality. That it was perfectly normal to like both. They gave him gentle warnings, that he would have to be careful because people were cruel.
And because his parents had left him with them for a couple of weeks, they took advantage of it to introduce Steve to other people. They took him to a tiny queer bookshop that was run by a friend of theirs, giving him a space to learn in safety. Because of them, he met people of so many different orientations lesbians, bisexuals, gay men. Self-proclaimed dykes and faggots. Transexuals, men who were once women and women who were once men¹ and people that pushed the boundaries of gender entirely. He felt in awe of all these people, but also loved and accepted by everyone he met.
A few years later, the summer of '82, age 15 and between freshman and sophomore year, he was sat down for a more serious conversation. The day after he arrived, Hank and Joe sat him down for a serious talk about safe sex, in way more detail than what he got from his parents, which was just a pack of condoms appearing in his bathroom on his fifteenth birthday, with a note saying to use them so he wouldn't get a girl pregnant. The talk emphasized the need for a barrier during any type of sex, and brought up the very real risk of GRID, which had yet to be renamed AIDS², to point out why he had to be incredibly careful with everyone he had sex with. But they also made a point to reassure him that they were both okay, that he didn't have to worry about them. They made sure that he knew that they were always there for him, just a phone call away if he ever had any concerns or questions.
A year later, at 16, they decided he was ready for more information. They provided him with pamphlets and zines, covering everything from rights movements to AIDS to secret codes. He took an interest in the hanky code, but felt a little intimidated about what some of the colors meant. They also provided him with a fake id that declared that he was twenty one and that his name was Mark. While he was staying with them, he joined them out in the community. Meeting the people affected by AIDS, learning about the real effects of it and not just the few scare stories that were breaking through on the news. Hearing more stories of lived life, getting a better understanding of the people around him.
Just a few months later, November '83. When everything went to shit. Steve was terrified when he saw the photos Jonathan had taken from outside his house and developed in the school dark room. He couldn't help getting stuck on the what if? What if it wasn't Nancy he had in his room? What if it had been that night when he and Tommy got a little too drunk and kissed each other? What if he'd finally got the nerve to bring a guy home? His life could have been destroyed in seconds by an asshole being a creep.
He became more on guard, scared that at any point someone could be taking photos in his backyard. Then seeing Jonathan with Nancy in her room, it pushed him further. With the fight the next day, he just wanted to make his words hurt. He dug deep and threw out accusations that he'd never wanted to say. Allowing his anger and fear to take over. The moment the word queer left his mouth, he felt an uneasy sense of regret. Accusing someone else of being what he was, as if it was a bad thing.
After it was all over, the details were shared, the cover stories were given, the paperwork declaring that nothing had happened had been signed, Steve felt lost and alone. Even after apologizing, he still felt dirty for calling Jonathan queer. After a few days, he breaks and calls Hank and Joe, and tells them, well not everything, but what he can. The photos, the camera, the fight. What he said to Jonathan. They understood his anger and his fear. They disagreed with his choice of words, but told him that if he'd apologized and meant it, and it had been accepted, there was no point in him continuing to beat himself up about it. That he couldn't change the past, but he had to try and be better in the future.
The following summer, 1984, he joined them with a new hatred and fear of the government. He felt safer with them, not feeling like he was looking over his shoulder all the time. But he was also so worried, what if the Upside Down came back when he wasn't there to help. He threw himself into helping others, knowing there were so many ways that the government was willing to screw over citizens. Wanting to do the little he could when he could. It brought him some peace of mind, being able to do something.
After Starcourt, after getting discharged from the hospital, Steve confides in Robin. He tells her about Hank and Joe. About how much he'd learnt from them. He tells her that he's bisexual, a word she was unfamiliar with, but she embraces him anyway. He spins a story of all the different people he'd met, people that proved it could be okay for people like them.
It formed an even deeper bond between them, a shared understanding that they couldn't find in anyone else their age. They share secrets about crushes, about realizations. Judging how attractive customers are together once they got the jobs at Family Video. Steve showed Robin the zines, helping her pick up more pieces of information, about how many others there were out there.
Steve clocked Vickie pretty quickly, almost certain she was bisexual like he was. Robin struggled to believe him, not wanting to get her hopes up, or to risk getting hurt.
When Eddie crashed into their lives during the spring break from hell, Steve found himself falling hard and fast. He'd noticed the black bandana Eddie wore tucked into his back left pocket, and wanted it. He had never considered being into s&m, but would be willing to take anything Eddie gave him.
He tried to bring it up subtly to Eddie, only to be met with confusion. Even trying less subtle ways of questioning it, Eddie still didn't seem to get it. Steve had to ask if he was flagging, and Eddie responded by asking what flagging was. Steve felt mortified, and stuttered about it being a code, and he thought Eddie was gay. Eddie assured him that he was gay, but still had no clue what Steve was talking about with flagging.
Steve showed Eddie the zines as well, going through all the different colors of the hanky code. Eddie got a little embarrassed when he realized what he'd been signalling, but some of the interactions he'd had with guys the few times he'd been to a gay bar made a lot more sense.
It took a few more days after that for Eddie to realize what Steve had been getting at by bringing up him flagging. There was another awkward, and slightly embarrassing conversation to confirm that yes, they were into each other, and no, neither of them were actually into s&m.
(And of course, Hank and Joe got a kick out of the story when they were the first ones Steve told, other than Robin.)
¹I wrote it this way, as it would have been a way that twelve year old could understand different gender identities in 1979. Different language and terminology was used. I believe that it is up to individual trans people for how they describe and consider themselves pre and post coming out and transition, as it is a very personal thing. I'm non-binary and I consider anything about myself under the age of 17 to be a girl, because that's how I identified at that time. ²(AIDS was known by a bunch of different names, some less kind than others, including GRID [Gay-related immune deficiency] and 4H disease [Heroin users, homosexuals, hemophiliacs and Haitians], until the summer of 1982. The name AIDS was proposed on July 27th 1982, and came into use by the CDC in September of that year. The term HIV came into use in 1986.)
This was supposed to be a quick little headcanon, and it ended up taking me nearly a month to write 1.5k words. And I now want to write so many parts about Steve with his relationship to Hank and Joe. They're the gay uncles everyone deserves.

how do you feel abt people shipping boothill and robin? I'm torn because like. on one hand I think it's funny. but on the other hand. people insisting she's coded as a lesbian and I'm like IS she? ik it's not ~confirmed~ but I don't want to be disrespectful even if it's just a heavy handed implication. but also cyborg cowboy and angel popstar are soo funny to me. at the very least I will enjoy platonic content of them ig
in my personal dyke opinion i dont see all the supposed Lesbian Coding everyone is always on about…? i do agree shes into women but with how much people talk abt it i feel like i would have more to show for it. so like idk i dont see anything wrong with hcing her as bi
as for robinhill tho, i liked it better before their actual release LMAO like idk the idea of Vengeful Murder Cowboy and Philanthropic Angel Popstar together is fun. but now that i actually know both characters i dont think it’d work out. except if boothill was a butch lesbo then it would be one of the best ships of all time. but as a man no he can go walk his stupid ass off to yaoiville and leave robin to ME
oh but idc if other people ship it do whatever you want. if it works for you it works for you
#no hate to boothill i like him i just think thats a funny phrase to say#asks#i think if sparkle were less. Well. Less Sparkle. like if she werent as far into the elation as she is#if she was still a little closer to the self we saw in her animations#i would reeeaaaallly like her and robin together.#there is so much potential there. but unfortunately sparkle um. Is a little fucker!#so i dont particularly have a robin ship i like a lot. i like her and march and her and firefly but not in any !!! way#and boothill i like him and dan heng and him and aventurine a little bit also

tuesday again 5/21/2024
get a load of this cat
listening
one of my favorite bands, Joywave, dropped a new album last week! it is not my favorite album of theirs but so it goes. perhaps it needs more time to grow on me. Sleepytime Fantasy kicks off my favorite section of the album. video game enchanted ice cave dream sequence music.
youtube
i must stay true to my own rules for this series (not a rec series, genuinely what i've been into the most this week) and the song that's been on loop all week is a genshin impact character's theme music (punchy wolf-coded ice cop who is the duke of the prison he. runs? administers? don't worry about it). unfortunately a bop. the character music lately has been a lot more modern and experimental than i expected? this one has a police siren drop

reading
thank you mackintosh.
i really, really enjoyed Trouble And Her Friends by Melissa Scott (LAMBDA award winner 1995)! @delta-orionis and i frequently ask ourselves "what if neuromancer was good?" and this scratches that itch for me. it is often difficult for me to take neuromancer's protagonist henry seriously, but this book features a pair of extremely practical dykes. it opens on the passing of a new american law criminalizing big swathes of online activity, passed despite a presidential veto. description from amazon
Less than a hundred years from now, the forces of law and order crack down on the world of the computer nets. The hip, noir adventurers who get by on wit, bravado, and drugs, and haunt the virtual worlds of the Shadows of cyberspace, are up against the encroachments of civilization. It's time to adapt or die. India Carless, alias Trouble, got out ahead of the feds and settled down to run a small network for an artist's co-op. Now someone has taken her name and begun to use it for criminal hacking. So Trouble returns. Once the fastest gun on the electronic frontier, she had tried to retire-but has been called out for one last fight. And it's a killer.
this startled me by how fun and competent it is! i tried reading one of the author's books last year (Dreamships) and had a miserable time with the pacing and flow of information. there are echoes of the pacing issues i had with the last book-- this is a nearly four hundred page hardcover, we have a lot of Next Locations to go to, and we are going to take our fucking time getting there. a road trip book, rather than a destination book. Scott has gotten way way better at fleshing out those locations— an artists' co-op has their skylights set to amber to hide the wear and tear on everything in their central hangout space when the feds show up. i also connected with the inciting incident way more-- someone stealing a female hacker’s name and style is instantly relatable. i am riding shotgun with Trouble. i am ready to throw down with her.
it's a very physical book in many ways, bc it has three brief sex scenes, is very concerned with sensuality in both senses of the word, and overall it's like the background in an anime that’s full of dials and buttons and little blinky lights. written in 1994, fascjnating how much concepts of VR and sensory inputs have not changed, but everyone still has the equivalent of an enormous old school desktop and giant CRT monitors set up. everyone is constantly lugging around so much physical tech. the stuff that makes you better at hacking in the net is quick reactions to VR sensations, the only way to get that cutting edge sensation is to get a physical chip or “worm” in your head, and the only people who do that are the core outcasts and freaks of the internet (the gays, the women, the people of color, the all three, presumably the furries as well). from that day to this…
there's an interesting contrast between Trouble and her old partner Cerise stalking the virtual reality bazaars/being queens of the BBS undergrounds, and the danger they feel and face when moving about in the real world. some reviewers are very cranky about how negotiations on and offline feel the same but i did not feel this particular quibble. communication is communication. it is known both on and offline that they're 1) women and 2) lesbians. they're in less physical danger online but slurs can still happen no matter where they are. also, i am well used to the necessity of having to posture and peacock and be kind of a bitch to establish myself in order to get anything done in coding/hardware scenes, which is something i don't think any of the male reviewers of the day ever had to think about.
some cowboy shit goes down at the end that had me hooting and hollering, and Scott handled the hacking scenes in an interesting way-- a sort of abstracted duel? terrific "fight" scenes. very interesting at how she will move things around in order to treat scenes in ways she's good at-- like establishing very grounded locations that feel real, physical sensations, and fight scenes-- instead of just kind of slogging through a very surface level high-overview travelogue like in her last book. ive been stuck on a fic chapter for like four years and this is making me think about doing it the fun way instead of the way i thought it should be done. this may be obvious but i am an amateur and more importantly an idiot.
this was a $6/1 book special last year at one of my favorite thrift stores, a religious shop with the absolute worst vibes in the greater houston area but some of the best stuff

watching
Five Dolls For An August Moon (1970, dir. Brava). sometimes you see a cool title on kanopy and you don't have a better way to kill an hour and a half. plus it had some guys i know from cowboys. tw for a suicide's body in the first fucking ten seconds of the trailer, which is a weird trailer choice bc u don't actually see most of the murders in the movie.
ive watched a fuck of a lot of spaghetti westerns so i feel i am somewhat qualified to tell you this is one of the worst dubs ive ever seen. the lines actors are quarter-heartedly delivering do not always make a lot of sense and only occasionally match the subtitles. i am assuming this is the original dub, bc kino lorber generally does a pretty okay job restoring things?
youtube
this is not a good movie (extremely troubled production, director swap three days before filming, made on a shoestring budget, the actors mostly wore their own clothes, etc). it is not very good at maintaining tension, because it is a film that first and foremost Looks. beautiful fucking sets, beautifully decorated. the exterior is a matte painting, a sort of frothy dream-bubble of sixties architecture. most of the interiors are apparently a real house. incredible experimental burbling soundtrack full of Weird Sounds.
sorry about the tubi interface and our old friend the activate windows logo.
there are so many fun directorial flourishes and staging, but it does get a little wrapped up in itself. this made me think of The Secret of NIMH, a beautifully animated talking-animal film that gave me nightmares as a child, where the animation tricks and sparkles and moving parts sort of all get in each other's way to produce something less than the sum of its parts. this sort of happens here. i'm going to yoink this from a review:
Bava’s eye for exquisite compositions is equally evident. One scene in particular stands out in this regard: The filmmaker shoots an otherwise humdrum fistfight through wooden latticework that breaks the action up into an abstracted mosaic effect. The fight culminates with a table being upended, which in turn unleashes a myriad crystal spheres. The camera follows along as the spheres tumble and cascade down a spiral staircase and roll across a tiled floor before plopping like so many bath bubbles into a tub. The scene concludes with the revelation of a recently deceased character caught in what you’d have to call a tableau morte. It’s a dazzlingly orchestrated sequence, easily on par with more famous Bava set pieces.
it's gorgeous! there's also So Much going on. another lovely bit of business: as each person dies they get wrapped in plastic sheeting and put in the walkin freezer. next to slabs of beef. not a subtle film, and i don't mean it as a diss, bc where's the fuckin fun in that?
-
playing
i have not been doing much of anything here except listen to podcasts and work toward the two-thousand-fish-caught achievement in genshin. impatiently waiting for Clorinde to be released in several weeks. that one button needs a raise. it is So funny to see genshin characters with fucking guns. very sword and pike based societies so far
-
making
every time i have tried to make one of these samplers for Me it's gone horribly wrong or been somehow destroyed so i'm making this one for my brother's upcoming birthday, bc he will have off-campus housing next academic year, in an attempt to peacefully do some fucking cross stitch and get something out at the end of it. pattern here on etsy

ok, these are my thoughts on interlude 11h, aka “the amy interlude,” aka “this is where things start to suck forever, right”
Abolish the nuclear family
Amy reiterating over and over that she’s not good at being a sister… god god goddddd
Up to this point, I can’t fathom feeling anything other than profound sympathy for Amy — a damaged, scared girl caving in under the weight of the unspeakable
Abolish the nuclear family
“The unspeakable” is the note dominating the story here: it’s the foundation for trauma, for abuse, for secrets that fester and explode and deal unimaginable collateral.
Fork found in kitchen, incestuous feelings found in the adopted girl deprived of any consistent, reliable definition of family
Maybe because you were safe, because you were always there.
God.
GOD!!!!!!
Abolish adoption also
Copying this from my friend who read worm: “Amy sees Victoria as an idealistic paragon and the only source of any of her happiness (this becoming very much an obsession/favorite person), and Vicky sees her as "her sister" who will absolutely never hurt her and always help her without really considering the impact on Amy herself. Tragedy for the ages.”
^ this partially in response to how Victoria was told twice (in no uncertain terms!) not to touch Amy, and ignored her — because Amy doesn’t really mean it, right? What she really needs right now is a hug from her sister, right?
There is probably a whole essay to be written on What’s In A Name, the Amy/Ames/Panacea and Victoria/Vicky/Glory Girl distinction, the way they use nicknames and aliases as a reflection of the interiority they refuse to afford each other — it all comes down to coercively assigned roles, doesn’t it
Fuck Wildbow for writing the confrontation/confession scene so homophobically it was giving me deja vu about hays code era films. FUCK OFFF!!! Just have Victoria call her a dyke and drop the farce!
I can’t stop imagining alternate realities where it didn’t happen like this. A world where Amy never became a Dallon. A world where she was never adopted at all. A world where her feelings for Victoria never morphed beyond the familial. A world where Bonesaw never showed up at her door. A world where Amy left for good and never saw Victoria again. A world where Victoria didn’t touch her after that warning.
But that’s not how the story goes.
Abolish the nuclear family.
#wormblogging#long post#(sorry)#I am aware of the broad strokes of What Amy Does To Victoria later on but I do NOT know specifics so no spoilers. please. I implore you#god I need to pull out the apparitional lesbian again and use it to talk about how amy is written don’t I

i was so blind i didn’t see francesca as being one of the gay bridgertons cause i was so focused on seeing and wanting eloise to be lesbian, and also just cressida x eloise, but like it makes complete sense?
from the beginning francesca was dealing with the marriage mart so clinically. she never seemed to actually care about getting married, she seemed to not know love or lust, just that it’s something she has to do and it was a way to hopefully get the peace she wanted.
when she was talking with the other ladies who asked what she would like in a man all she could come up with was ‘he is kind’, she didn’t care who she would marry, violet said that she would choose the first man who was nice to her, later she’d said she would accept whoever the queen suggested. like she was very cordial through it all, saying yes and accepting when her mother would introduce her to a man but there was never any real joy (i mean a little through john)
like i don’t understand all of it since the time period, but yeah dyke/lgbt coded to me tbh
#francesca bridgerton#bridgerton#b post#i’ve been watching edits on instagram#can i stop tagging spoilers now idk

howdy yall :D i made a post like this a while ago that very much needed to be updated and i simply talk about and tag characters from lost township a lot so i wanted to have an easy place to reference for what in the hell im talking about and something to throw at people when i want to infodump. so!!

roo panes - he/him - tiefling scribes wizard
a religious researcher who was supposed to be cataloguing the pantheons of the democracy but ended up parking in lost for a while to study the jack (autism special interest alert). ultimate nerd, way too talkative, twink who's one stiff breeze away from having his bi awakening. currently has a puppy crush on kelsey and hasn't put together that's why scruggs is mean to him
the gods:

your art is literally gorgeous but i just wanted to ask like whether you have a dislike of lesbians or something? like i know greaseball is never specified as a lesbian within the show but it’s widely suggested by context, subtext and by the cast themselves, and i guess i just kind of wondered why you disagree with that and seem determined to erase that part of her character? this is no hate at all like i love crackships and i LOVE your art im just kinda curious why you don’t see her as a lesbian because for me personally she’s so butch dyke coded that i can’t imagine her with a guy (honestly the thought repulses me), so i wondered what attracts you to these f/m ships with her? again this is no hate im just genuinely intrigued
(i really hope this doesn’t come off as negative or aggressive bc that’s genuinely not my aim, it’s just that canon lesbian representation is so rare (especially in musical theatre) that when i see someone erase those identities it kinda gets my back up, but im interested in hearing different point of views!! im kinda biased bc im a genuine man hating lesbian and i try to surround myself with similar communities and schools of thought so i just wanna hear other points of view bc honestly hating men all the time is exhausting but i just can’t help it lol)
. haha hi this is kind of an insane thing to ask someone 😭😭
in no way, shape or form do i dislike lesbians. i infact like girls myself !! i appreciate your question, and im glad you asked to clear the air!! i understand she does date a woman in the show, which i also ship them!!! but at the end of the day, she can still be bisexual i fear 💔 being shown dating a singular woman does not confirm her a lesbian. ive dated women, but i can still date men as well!
for me, its the dynamics i find interesting!! doesnt matter what gender the characters are to me, even if greaseball was still male i fear id still have the same exact ships!!! i just find them fun!
i appreciate your question, really, but i dont think this is a very okay thing to accuse someone of 💔i am definitely not trying to "erase" that part of her character, every time i ship greaseball with another character all those relationships with dinah have still been well and alive -- just no longer active. which happens ! but this was honestly a very upsetting ask to receive knowing that people thought because of my silly little doodles that i hated lesbians 😭😭
thank you for your question!

♡~!Jump's Pinned Post!~♡
NOTICE:: I have released the links to my Playlists and Pinterest boards via Linktree. If u wanna hear songs I think are Seawatt coded or see pins I think are very Seavbo then check the links.
Hello Parkour Civilization Fandom!! I figured I'd make a pinned post introducing myself to everyone and make sure my boundaries are clearly stated. So by the time the ParkCiv fandom gets here I'll have the house all set up for you guys!
I'm a huge fan of S2 Seawatt and the relationship between Evbo and his Master Friend. So expect most of my posts to be abt either of those things.
I'm a bit embarrassed to be into this fandom at my age and demographics, so I won't be going by my actual name. You can call me Jump or Yuri (my minecraft name is xXx_Yuri_xXx so that's why!)
Speaking of age, I'm 21. This means if you're a minor I probably wont befriend you (especially if you're in like middle school), but I don't mind minors following me since this blog will be SFW (hope that's the norm here).
I am a Genderflux/Xenogender AroAce Butch Lesbian. I go by literally any pronouns ever, but a few I prefer are: (She/Her),(It/It's/Itself),(They/Them),(This/That),(Chat),(We/Us),(Thee/Thim/Thers), & (Voi/Void/Voidself) Because of my lesbianism I have the tendency to Yurify male characters (turning guys into women and making them dykes), if this possibility makes you uncomfortable then don't follow.
[This/That pronoun set can be followed by any noun: Thing/Guy/Girl/Player/Gamer. Whatever]
I have very strict boundaries: If you want to communicate with me, do it through asks or replies mostly. I'm not opposed to DMing but I don't want anyone to think we're friends because we talked a few times over Tumblr's DM system. (Though I'm not opposed to gaining friends in this fandom, I'm just very guarded sadly. But it's very easy to befriend me.) I will not give anyone links to my other socials unless I'm at the point I consider us friends. I do have a Twitter though that I use for ParkCiv so feel free to follow it!
I have a very clear and strict DNI: If you are a bigot you aren't allowed. This includes: TERF/SWERFs, Proshippers, Racists, Sexists, Homophobes, Transphobes, Zionists, Antisemites, American Conservatives, or anyone that belittles someone because of who they are. I also don't want anyone who uses Generative AI interacting with my posts as it's harmful to people and the environment. Yes this includes using it for roleplay.

i promised myself i wouldn't start drama with straight women on tumblr bc we're all in this together bla bla bla but omg, losing my mind at lil miss "why can't two women heavily coded as lesbian be heterosexual friends instead 🤬🤬🤬". some women need to get real problems, because i promise there is no dearth of straight female friends in fiction. christie very blatantly intended for them to be lesbians, and to be interpreted as such both in universe and by readers. the way she writes straight female friends vs the way she writes lesbians is very different (see also the lesbian character in the mousetrap). she includes multiple homosexual characters in her writing, and their sexuality is always written in a way where she expects the reader to simply accept the fact. never forget her second husband was bisexual and was madly in love as a young man with another boy (he even converted to catholicism for him!) and went to school with evelyn waugh. christie was very ahead of her time when it came to seeing homosexuals as human beings. no one needs to pearl clutch about pure heterosexual friendship being gaywashed by evil single minded dykes - she's very blunt about when someone is gay lol
I agree with you 100%, but I didn't want to "bully" another woman out in public for her opinion because I fear I am getting a bit of a reputation for being an instigator, and female misogynist for saying feminism 101 or Lesbian basic stuff. Agatha has written a lot of two women who live together, and people don't automatically assume they are gay, she usually highlights why they choose to live together, female companionship, age, class (lady and her maid), disability and reduced living expenses. However, with her lesbian coded characters, there is no such excuses. She was very forward thinking in a lot of ways, one of which was she wasn't big on English zenophobia, called it out with a lot of characters, and she wasn't a female sexist (like highsmith) she depicted a whole host of interesting women, and her work wasn't outwardly homophobic and included lots of gay coded characters who weren't villains and lived. I didn't know her second husband was bisexual, how adorable. I do know he adored and appreciated her (more than her horrible first husband) and was a young pilot. Thanks for sharing all this Agatha gay history facts with me, I learned something. I have never read mousetrap, now that I know there is a lesbian character, I will!

Yeah you know what i'll send G1 for sexuality and gender HCs. why not
Alejandro: Ive never sat down and thought about this but bisexual seems correct.
Beth: I think ive always operated under the assumption shes lesbian lol. brady is SUCH a comphet boyfriend
Bridgette: I have a hard time seeing her as anything but straight I cant even lie? like i love wlw bridgette ships but not in a way that I wouldn't be unsurprised if they were canonically shut down lmfao 😭😭😭I really like the lesbian bridgette hc I just cannot get behind it in a way that aligns me with actually thinking bridgette would be a lesbian
Cody: I have no opinions on what I think his sexuality is but I cannot get behind relationships between him and girls
Courtney: LESBIAN. but i do like seeing other hcs for her. I see cases for her being bi, I see cases for her being straight. shrug emoji. I do really like duncney as a ship though which throws some wrenches in that hc just a little bit lmfao
Dj: I operate in a world where Dj is a lesbian even though I dont think i seriously think that. Its just how it goes
Duncan: i have a hard time seeing him as anything other than straight. like. im sorry this guy would be so homophobic. he would use the word gay as an insult. However, i do like aleduncan. so take of that as you will (its funny and makes me laugh) he has gay friends though omg🙄🙄🙄🙄
Eva: LESBIAN. yes its stereotypical. no i dont care. shes such a dyke
Ezekiel: straight??????? idk. this isnt even a "hes sexist so he would be other flavors of bigoted" I just dont live in a universe that I think ezekiel could be queer
Geoff: bisexual except i dont think he would label it. he thinks its normal for everyone to be a little attracted to the same gender. my friend that has only seen a little bit of total drama also likes him being a trans man which i mostly find funny but i could see lmao.
Gwen: lesbiannn. I really like the hc shes a trans girl as well, or nonbinary. im fine with either of those. regardless she is not cishet in any fashion. i genuinely think she is very very lesbian coded aligned because the way she behaves with men in the show is just???? so strange? i dont think it was intentional from the producers though which has me hesitant to mark it as actually "coded". Also i so seriously believe she was one sided crushing on courtney in all stars. why is she so weird. like im not a big gwourtneyer but wanting to impress a girl that bad teeters into "theres no straight explanation for this" territory
Harold: idk. trans in some direction. last year I remember seeing one of those your fave is posts and it was transbian harold and i remember laughing so hard bc i wasnt in the fandom at the time I had no idea someone would hc harold of all people as transbian.
Heather: trans girl lesbian though im less heavy on her being trans I just like it symbolically. saw someone forever ago say t4t gweather and I liked it a lot. her bald era was such an interesting look into her mind bc that is straight up gender dysphoria. I dislike aleheather bc i hc her as just so so lesbian.
Izzy: nonbinary unlabeled. she dgaf about labels so hard so im not gonna try to break it down either.
Justin: hes always given me gay man energy
Katie + Sadie: I love them as lesbian but i prefer them staying just friends (though im fine with the ship.)
Leshawna: Ive never thought about it. i think she plays a straight bff role very easily but she could be bi or lesbian
Lindsay: I prefer her as lesbian but I also like lyler in a way that has me thinking she could be bi. unlabeled maybe but lesbian aligned. dunno, I guess it could depend on the universe lol.
Owen: bisexual. ik this isnt "canon" but its canon enough to me.
Noah: Seeing people argue over this has me not giving a shit at all. bisexual i guess. i dont care
Sierra: i LOVE lesbian sierra. hill i'll die on is that shes a lesbian that made up a guy to crush on to try and appear normal since she has no friends in school.
Trent: i have quite literally 0 opinions on trent that are based on canon. hes a straight man
Tyler: straight to me i cant lie, but i like transfem lesbian tyler its cuteness
#ask#idk how hot some of these takes are just know i give 0 shits about if other peoples hcs are different to mine#and i dont sit down and think of characters as straight its just kinda the first place my mind goes to

All due respect, but you’re pretty wrong about a few things.
1. That’s not what death of the author means. It’s a common misconception, but death of the author is a literary analysis technique in opposition to “word of god”. An example of death of the author would be “word of god from JRR Tolkien says lord of the rings wasn’t inspired by his time at war, but analysis of events and his life shows a lot of similarities and influences on it, and interpreting the series as about his time in the war is a valid approach despite what he says”. It’s not ignoring things about the author or deciding the author has no involvement or influence.
2. JK Rowling does actually continue to make royalties off of Harry Potter stuff.
3. Buying the game is funding her, and she uses the money to fund transphobic politics that has done real harm to transgender people in at least the UK, and funding efforts to keep Scotland and Ireland colonized.
4. Reclaiming queer and fag and dyke isn’t the same as continuing to fund JK Rowling. You can’t “reclaim” a franchise. Queer, fag, dyke, etc don’t make anyone money. They’re words being weaponized emotionally, and their impact is as strong as we let it be. Harry Potter is a brand and a franchise with PR and accountants and corporations at the helm. It’s not something that can be “reclaimed” and to say so indicates a fundamental misunderstanding of what reclaiming is at all. Harry Potter itself has some cruel caricatures in it, yes, but the real problem is the actual funding of JK Rowling and those she works with that agree with her, or just care about money more than the people she’s hurting.
I understand your intentions here, and why people get defensive about enjoying HP. But I hope you’ll genuinely listen to me and think about what I’ve said, because you really have said a lot of incorrect things here. JK Rowling has and will continue to do genuine, tangible harm to our community.
And this isn’t in the body of your post, but it’s something I’d like to add. This game isn’t the Harry Potter you grew up with. While Harry Potter itself had aspects of antisemitic caricatures, it wasn’t the main focus. This game is made of and about blood libel. I adored the books when I was a kid. This game is nothing like them. If you remove it from the discourse about JKR, you can still recognize that it’s a game using the setting and name of Harry Potter to sell a story about oppressing Jewish-coded slaves, but it’s okay, because they’re EVIL slaves. It has the superficial trappings of Harry Potter, but it will not have what you loved about the books.
Have a good day.
So I do very much appreciate you trying to be civil about this, and I will certainly give some consideration to your points, But could you provide me with some sources for the information here? I don't mean this to come off as dismissive, but I'm not keen to take the word of an anonymous person on the internet over my own education in literature, finance and economics. Or to reverse my views on cancel culture and the spread of undeserved hate towards people who are just trying to enjoy a nostalgic part of their childhood, just because a very opinionated person online has ignored my examples of how other creators have had their IP’s reclaimed by fans. Especially when your argument to the contrary would suggest that the queen community has not battled lawmakers, lawyers, PR and accountants for years in reclaiming much of the language we use today, let alone all of the other times we have fought against systematic abuse and won. I don’t feel like “its hard” makes for a very valid argument for why we should not only avoid trying, but demonize any of our own who do. And again... I actually have no love for the books? I grew out of them, and looking back, very much recognize that they are hot trash, and not something I care about. I'm also not defending this game, and have no intention of buying or supporting it. I just... really don't like seeing communities start wars within themselves when there are real, actively malicious enemies waiting at the doorstep. Witchhunts and the persecution of heretics are something the 15th century catholic church was known for. I’d rather not see the trend continue

If you're still doing the "reasons why an RE woman is queer coded" could you perhaps do one for Ada as well? :)
I will do “queer coding RE women” for as many RE women as I get in my inbox don’t you worry I’m having a ball in this bitch
Ada Wong queer coding
She has short hair and is a strong fighter (masculine) while almost exclusively wearing dresses and heels and makeup (feminine) this shows she is clearly very gender nonconforming, very queer in her presentation
She is constantly playing with Leon, never outright admitting that she has feelings for him, even kissing him just to get something she wants and later taunting him about it. If she had feelings for him, then the two of them would have gotten married and had babies by now just like they do in all those fanfics I refuse to read because EW pairing up Ada Wong with a MAN? I would NEVER read something so DISGUSTING because she is my good sweet innocent baby dyke who I refuse to even think about interacting with men despite the fact that she does so all the time.
Her knife fight with Hillary Clinton in Damnation is very clearly sexually charged between the two women. Their fight is intense and erotic, they fight with knives, a weapon meant for penetration, and at one point Hillary Clinton even tears open Ada’s dress, slightly exposing her boob. Need I say more?
Now I haven’t played Separate Ways, because to be a fan of video games you don’t actually have to have played any of the games anymore, you just need to follow people who make hot art of the video game characters and declarative statements of what they’re like, and to check a Wiki that could never have wrong information in it ever, but I think the interactions between Luis and Ada in Separate Ways are clearly of two queer people recognizing each other and finding solidarity in each other.
Like the dance scene with the two of them, Luis’ dance is very feminine and Ada’s very masculine, again showing off Ada as a gnc character (Luis is too ig but like I said I try not to think about men too much)
She also gets to interact with Ashley in Separate Ways and omg it’s soooo gay and queercoded I can’t even begin to get into all of that
Ada’s somewhat known for giving people rocket launchers in battle, and as I discussed with Jill’s queer coding, large heavy weapons that give off blasts like that are very evocative of strap-on imagery
In RE6 when Ada is cloned, the Ada clone wears more traditionally feminine attire, while Ada herself is wearing pants for the first time in the series. This is of course intended to show how the clone is not Ada, just trying to present as her, while not understanding how gnc and masculine our character really is.
I think she and Claire should make out

I’m here because I saw your post about a DEBS remake with Renee Rapp, that would be insane, that would be amazing, I want it now, also I saw a video on Twitter of Renee saying that dyke was one of her favorite words so you were on to something there too
thank you for seeing the vision…also honestly i’m not sure which part id want her in im not sure she could play innocent enough to be amy (also Another repressed lesbian role would be taking the piss tbh 😭). honestly i just rlly wanna hear her say [what’s your beef with the australians?] “i don’t like their attitude.” VERY renee coded
as for the second part the fact ik exactly what you’re talking abt bc i saw it and saved the video immediately is so fucking funny. u get me.
#there’s another video of her in ireland making jokes abt being called a dyke#im collecting them like pokémon cards

I’m feeling like some things are out of character in Abbott. I’d like to ask if you feel the same way. Barb in the upcoming episode, not having her entire teaching criteria? And her and the candle? It’s obvious she had a reason for that, but an open flame, in a school? I don’t know. I just feel like it wasn’t supposed to be for her character. Although the best opening in the series- Greg’s hat! Isn’t there a dress code? And Jacob and black history and last weeks episode with not knowing important people aka Barb’s references, assuming they were important. Lastly, do you think Tariq will try to fall back on Teddie’s relationship once again?
ok so my answer to this ask got a little away from me so i'll stick it under a read more
Ok so first off the thing about the candle is it WAS partially out of character for Barbara (rather the leaving the candle unattended was) because, like you say, she was dealing with her husband's health crisis. But candles on the table aren't totally out of character for her, we've seen them at least once:
it's a "home away from home" type deal, for her. We know how her and Melissa feel about that table. It's a whole thing. She was going through it and lit a candle to relax, like she would at home (because school is also her home), but because she was distracted by thoughts she left it lit, very literally putting one of her only safe spaces (the table, the room, the school) in jeopardy. She was very literally out of character for a narrative purpose.
As for the teaching requirements, I'm gonna wait for some context on that one. These blurbs don't really give you a particularly good overview a lot of the time. They often give things higher stakes than they truly are (the fact it's listed second means it's probably the b plot, so it might not be That Serious as often b-plots are the comic relief).
For the hat, I'd assumed he wouldn't actually be teaching in it. They're in the break room before the bell rings, and he knows it'd be distracting in a classroom. He's just a dork. He'd leave it on a hanger or something. But also, I mean, Melissa wears skin tight leather pants to work and wears blazers buttoned in such a was as to deliberately feature her Girls. I think the dress code at that school is pretty loose.
For Jacob, knowing black history and being a civil rights advocate doesn't mean he's infallible about knowing Black pop culture. I'm king faggot of dyke mountain but half of queer cultural touchstones pass me by. Like I hardly know anything about the pop girlies for example because it's not in my set of personal interests. Jacob's, like, a hipster. He's into thought-provoking podcasts and stuff. In my head he listens to sadboy music and watches foreign films. He's the token white boy with white boy interests, and he can be that but still be very passionate about civil rights issues. Though I will say, I don't believe that boy never saw Glee. I know in my heart he was in the trenches with us making it his whole personality for a while. Bust Your Windows was a cultural reset. Maybe he just didn't know original, but realised who they were talking about immediately after Googling it?
Like are all these instances a bit strange? Yeah. I'm not really excusing them so much as trying to make them work within the world of the show. This show uses a LOT of flex for a gag, sometimes dropping very weird lore for a chara that is never mentioned again, just because it would be funny or whiplash. "I don't think the moon landings are real", for example. It's just the general tone. I try not to think about it too deep for ANY show (or i'd get mad about writers mishandling my blorbos), though it is fun to do that sometimes. It also comes of these kind of scripted comedies having multiple writers and not necessarily having the same character concept in their head compared to the other writers, which is it's own beast. But yeah, I can see what you mean.
As for Tariq. Lol, yeah. There's no way they were gonna make it easy for Gregory and Janine after that kiss, especially now they've both split up from their exes. "If I can't have you, if it didn't mean anything to you, I'll go try the easy option again. Oh shit, oh no, this isn't what I wanted." Like I know Miss Brunson thinks this shit up while on her bed kicking her feet like Moesha. It's like fanfiction but on tv. It's gonna be m-e-s-s-y.
