Is Hatakeyama Shigetada as handsome and valiant as everyone says? Guy nearly captured Shizuka Gongen.

Pretty sure you mean Tomoe and not Shizuka? It’s a fairly popular motif in ukiyo-e.

Shigetada does sort of interact with Shizuka in the Gikeiki (he plays the flute when she performs in front of Yoritomo), but he has no part in her capture. In most variants I am aware of, that's the role of Kajiwara no Kagetoki, who is pretty consistently portrayed negatively (we’re talking Grima Wormtongue level of subtlety here), in contrast with Shigetada.

In any case, in fiction Shigetada is pretty consistently described as a respectable, level-headed figure. He is portrayed as loyal to Yoritomo, but simultaneously as sympathetic to Yoshitsune (in the Gikeiki he opposes Yoritomo’s idea to get rid of him at Koshigoe, berates him for valuing Kagetoki more than own brother, and praises the loyalty of some of Yoshitsune’s retainers like Tadanobu; at the same time, in Genpei Jōsuiki he restraints Yoshitsune when he wants to fight Kagetoki after being insulted by him), Shizuka (in the nara ehon Shizuka, see here, p. 309) or the Soga brothers (in Soga Monogatari).

As far as later literature goes, it’s worth noting the famous Edo period playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon in Sasaki Ōkagami made Shigetada a mouthpiece for his quite harsh criticism of one of the more popular superstitions at the time: “the idea that women born in the year of the Fire Horse are a curse upon their husbands is all a bunch of hogwash” (it’s based on the sexagenary cycle; for more context, see Taming the Fire Horse. The Free Distribution of Anti-superstition Pamphlets in Early Modern Japan by Niels van Steenpaal). I feel like his portrayal in Dan no Ura Kabuto Gunki is more ambivalent, though.

While fiction obviously exaggerates historical events, it is true that Shigetada was a particularly loyal follower of Yoritomo and was seemingly genuinely regarded as upstanding. However, he didn’t fare particularly well after his lord’s death:  through machinations of the Hōjō clan he was falsely accused of plotting a rebellion, and died alongside many other members of his family as a result. This was a part of their bigger strategy of isolating political rivals and eliminating them, which eventually led to their monopolization of the influential regent position.

The Tsurugi ties

To lead on from this post there is something more I wanted to say, and it’s about Tomoe Tsurugi 

In Ikari Gozen, Tomoe tells Kagami that friendships can be disappointing

It gives us insight that Tomoe feels the need to protect Kagami from the hurt of friends and is one of the reasons why she is harsh on Kagami. It also indicates that Tomoe had a bad end to a friendship. 

I was watching Cat Blanc x Princess Justice on youtube, this video specifically and there is also this one to give some food for thought and I couldn’t help thinking about it more. 

We all know how suspicious it was about these “papers” that needed signing, but I completely skipped over the bit in Feast where it has Gabriel, Natalie, Tomoe and Audrey all listening and/or watching. That is intentional.

These families are either just monopolizing, or they are aware of the miraculous, though they could be doing both, kill two birds with one stone. Though what does have me pondering is Tomoe. If she did know Gabriel and co in the past and worked on Solitude with them all, was that the friendship that broke and hardened her? Was she always blind? Why would she continue to give her services to Gabriel? I know she still gives him a hard time, but still.

She also tells Gabriel this in Backwarder “He who hopes gives the opportunity to obtain what he desires, but he who fears will always end up with the very thing he dreads”

This proverb honestly... it suggests that the former half is about Gabriel, and the latter belongs to Adrien. I’ll talk about this more at a later date, but why does she offer him advice, and one that hits home? I say this because the context was him shriveling up when someone walks past him and he says he doesn’t like straying far from home. How does the proverb and the context relate unless she knew about him being Hawkmoth? Knowing that that was his uneasiness. 

Anyway, these three families then, the Agreste, Bourgeois and Tsurugi all know what’s up with the miraculous and are potentially all working together. Again, like the film Solitude, there is a lot of stigma around the families network that is never expanded upon. After all Tomoe and Kagami were also at the Anniversary of Andre and Audrey. 

Maybe Tomoe wasn’t always so harsh, maybe the loss of her sight and end to friendship hardened her personality, because I do think it is awful of her to tell her daughter she isn’t good at drawing when she can’t see it in the first place and it is probably just so she doesn’t have a “whimsical, creative” ambition, much the same as how she reins Kagami in with having friends. Similar to how Adrien is an extension of Gabriel brand, not his own person as meeting with his friends and going to school is deemed as whimsical and selfish it seems by Gabriel. Though Gabriel may have always been a cold person, as from what little we understand about Adrien’s past is that he was never this bad (after disappearance of Emilie), but he was still cold. Audrey however seems to have always been a bitch but she too may have gotten worse as time went on. Similar to how Chloe has always been difficult, but she has the potential and now she has regressed tremendously, but with her connection to Zoe, she still has the potential to turn herself around. 

There is way more that we need to know about these families!!!!
