Twenty Years Later, '10 Things I Hate About You' Is More Relevant Than You'd Expect
For me and all the other mid-80s millennials, 1999 didnât signal the end of an era. It was the start of our definitive teenage years, rich with all the compulsive hormone-driven drama that would ultimately shape us into the adults we went on to become.
1999 was the year I started high school; the year that I got what was, at the time, a state-of-the-art three-CD player on which I blasted TLCâs FanMail, Backstreet Boysâ Millennium, and Sugar Rayâs 14:59 on endless loop. Itâs also the blessed year that 10 Things I Hate About You was released.
Iâm guessing many adolescent girlsâand boys, for that matterâat the time could relate to at least one of the characters in 10 Things I Hate About You. There was quippy sidekick Michael (David Krumholtz), doe-eyed and floppy-haired new kid Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), effortlessly and often infuriatingly twee Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), the tragically underrated Mandella (Susan May Pratt), and of course, the mewling, rampallian wretch herself, Kat (Julia Stiles).
Like Kat, I existed on the fringes of my fairly affluent, mostly white public schoolâs society, although my banishment was less self-inflicted than hers. Yes, I haunted bookstores in my spare time and plastered my room with torn-out pages from Bust Magazine and dELiA*s catalogs, but I was neither thin, blond, or a voluntary member of any sports team. I couldnât understand how someone who could effortlessly bare an enviably toned midriff be so bold as to snub male attention, which was the only type of attention I craved as a swarthy 13 year old who had yet to be kissed.
But her defiance of conventional feminine attitudes captivated me. The idea that one could subscribe to their own ideals rather than conform to anyone elseâs expectations was a completely new concept in a time when teenage self-discovery was only just taking root. I did give a damn âbout my reputation⌠but maybe I didnât have to.
In 1999, Katâs brand of feminism seemed pretty extreme. But looking back on it 20 years later, itâs surprising how mainstream certain aspects of it now come across.
âEvery time I watch this movie Kat seems more and more relatable,â explains Sarah Barson, co-host of Bad Feminist Film Club, a podcast that reviews movies through a feminist lens. âAt the time this movie came out, I think Kat was supposed to be a super âout thereâ radical feminist, but the stuff she talks about feels very relevant to modern conversations about pop culture and a woman's right, or even responsibility, to speak up and challenge social norms.â
But according to 10 Things I Hate About You writers Karen McCullah and Kirsten âKiwiâ Smith, Kat may have ended up differently if written for todayâs audience.
âI think Kat would have to have a more extreme form of rebellion,â says Smith. âWeâd have to dig her even further into a counter-culture, because in that era, it was all pretty simple.â
Rather than merely dreaming of playing in a riot grrrl band, Smith says Kat wouldâve already been shredding on her pearly white Stratocaster, playing her angsty songs at different gigs. Had 10 Things been written in 2019, McCullah sees a version of Kat thatâs more in touch with the activism of todayâs teens.
âLike, kind of the Parkland student vibe, I think. We would add a little bit more of that,â she says. âI think those kids are amazing, what theyâre accomplishing. When I think of teenagers right now, thatâs where my brain goes first.â
Smith agrees. âThatâs a good point, yeah. When we wrote it, we were kind of in a freewheeling 90s bubble, not really thinking about the larger world around us. Now, as Karen pointed out, the experience of the youth is much different. Theyâre much more global in their thinking than we were.â
10 Things I Hate About You has its share of shortcomings, although itâs held up better over time than other teen flicks of previous eras, like Sixteen Candles. Iâm willing to bet that a fresh audience today wouldnât laugh quite as hard when Kat flashes her soccer coach to help Patrick (Heath Ledger) sneak out of detentionâeven with his swoon-worthy dimplesâor let it slide when Bianca drops the R-word during an argument with Kat. And let's not forget how ânice guyâ Cameron manipulated the entire love triangle just so he could have a shot with the younger Stratford sister. Oof.
Even so, the characters' relationships with one another and even their personal shortcomings hold up relatively authentically in a way that few other movies have been able to accomplish.
âThe Craft was the perfect movie for any woman who felt disenfranchised, and Never Been Kissed really did stress the importance of self-confidence and self-acceptance, but 10 Things I Hate About You was about real characters to whom average women could relate,â says Dr. Randall Clark, author of At a Theater Or Drive-In Near You: The History, Culture, and Politics of the American Exploitation Film and associate professor of Communication and Media Studies at Clayton State University.
Dr. Clarkâs students have expressed surprise that Kat was open about her sexual experience and yet managed to escape some of the consequences that society tends to heap upon young women who have sex at what they consider to be a young age.
âIt was just a fact of her life,â he says, giving credit to the movie for being ânot at all judgmental about her past.â
The filmmakersâ non-superficial portrayal of an unapologetic and (one-time) sexually active feminist was a groundbreaking achievement at a time when few other feature films even dared to explore the complexities of teen girl relationships. In the 90s, and to some extent today, feminism is often mistakenly equated with man-hating, an idea that both writers resoundingly reject.
âFeminists need love too!â laughs Smith.
Earlier teen-centric comedies like 1995âs Clueless helped lay the groundwork for 10 Things by weaving together real-life scenarios with tongue-in-cheek banter that managed to entertain, but also illuminate some of the basic pillars of modern-day feminism. The fact that both are remakes of classicsâ Clueless being a contemporary version of Jane Austenâs Emma and 10 Things I Hate About You being a modern adaptation of William Shakespeareâs The Taming of the Shrewâthat revolve around young women with BIG personalities makes perfect sense. Women finding their place in the world, and being tamed by men, is by no means a novel idea.
But one thing that many of these iconic films of the late 90s and early 2000s lack is a sense of intersectionality. Bad Feminist Film Club co-host Kelly Kauffman cites Bring It On as one example of film from this era that addresses issues of race and class that other filmsâincluding 10 Thingsâshied away from.
âThere's definitely some parts that haven't aged as well, but on a recent rewatch, I was struck by how the movie [Bring It On] touched on sensitive issues that most mainstream movies try to actively avoid,â says Kauffman.
10 Things I Hate About You may have helped shape the modern definition of âgirl powerâ and inspired movies like Bend It Like Beckham to depict alternative stereotypes of femininity, but itâs not perfect. The one major theme I find particularly problematic upon rewatching is the apparent lack of understanding about consent throughout the film. Kat and Biancaâs father Walter (Larry Miller) doesnât seem to grasp the concept that sex tends to occur between two people choosing to participate. His fears are clearly distorted for comic effect, but his misguided worldview holds his daughters hostage (as Bianca points out) rather than holding their partners accountable.
This concept extends to the prom scene when Biancaâs BFF-turned-nemesis Chastity (Gabrielle Union) smugly informs Bianca that pretty boy villain Joey (Andrew Keegan) âwas gonna nail you tonight,â as though Bianca wouldnât have had a choice in the matter. Then thereâs the entire plot of the filmâs inspiration: in The Taming of the Shrew, multiple men scheme and plot over who could obtain the most submissive, docile wife.
But the writers are adamant that the idea of âtamingâ doesnât carry over to the film.
âI think at the end of the movie, you never get the sense that her character is going to be controlled by Patrick, in terms of Taming of The Shrew,â says McCullah. âObviously, sheâs not tamed and we donât think Patrick is the type of guy who would want to control her. Thatâs why she likes him.â She goes on to call him an ally, or at least a prototype for one.
Seeing a privileged angry white girl like me grapple with trust, relationships, and finding herself inspired me to follow a more unconventional path in my own right. By the end of 1999, I had moved from Sugar Ray to crust punk, spiked my hair, and amassed a collection of ballpoint pen-decorated Chuck Taylors. I eventually dabbled in dating and going to art school, although I unfortunately never did start a band. But seeing someone chase her unorthodox dreams in a world designed to stifle misfits allowed me to dream outside the box in a way I'd never been shown before.
Compared to 2019, 1999 was a relative vacuum of women in media. âThere were not a lot of female writing teams when we first started,â recalls Smith. âNow it seems like the appetite for female voices and female-fronted stories is ever-expanding."
Movies like Mad Max: Fury Road and Captain Marvel, with Brie Larson starring in Marvelâs first female-fronted superhero film, prove that weâve come a long way with female representation. Both Smith and McCullah hope the trend continues, both in their future work, in the entertainment world at large, and with the resonating impact of 10 Things I Hate About You.
As McCullah says, âI hope it keeps inspiring young girls to be badasses and not let other people define them.â

Homeowners insurance question?
My father has homeowners insurance that covers the exterior buildings around his house, like a garden shed/ covered carport. this past weekend, a large snowfall provided too much weight for one building, and it collapsed. inside was a lawn mower and an antique automobile that dad has had since he was my age, and it was damaged by a metal beam. (think hot dog bun). the insurance company is now saying that they will pay for the repair of the building and for a new lawnmower, but not the car itself. it was not fully restored, but it was in fair working condition (meaning the engine works and the auto does move). does exterior building coverage also include everything inside, or does it have a limit? is the insurance company trying to weasel out of paying my father? if so, who should I call? Saving up car + insurance HELP !?
My partner is having driving tests every week, and she is a more advanced driver. I just like to get advice on this matter, financial ? I do got a job, part time mainly. I do earn around 180 +- a week if I am lucky, She has student loan, 800 every three months and that's not much since she has to pay university fees. normally around 9k. now it's around 4.5 thousand pounds I guess. She wants to get a car insurance and a car, we are troubled what to do since if she wants all of that it will be loads more. Since insurance is 600 pounds every year ? petrol and other costs MOT. Road tax ? Just some examples, there might be lots more to worry about. I will help her to get all these things, She thinks it would be easier to get a second hand car, that will hopefully handle 2/3 years ? I do not believe that's a wise choice since that would be much more expensive for extra costs and repairs. On top when she is done with Uni and she has to get a job, it's more sufficient to still owning a proper car to get you everywhere. The body could be damaged, and the chance of a accident is higher + extra costs. Can anybody help us out ? A second hand for 2/3 thousand with a insurance of 600 a year ? or not ? Lemme know ! Thank you !""

Do auto insurance companies have to look at your driving record?
I have never had a vilolation. My husband has. He had one in 2006 for running a red light and one in 2008 for driving too fast for conditions. Well naturally this has given me higher payments. I was with Liberty Mutual and for liability only (my car isn't worth full coverage) I was paying $124 a month. My husbands pay was cut drastically at work so I was shopping around for cheaper insurance. I called Geico and they offered me liability for $55 a month. She came on and asked if I knew he had two tickets and at the time I didn't because I didn't know my husband in 2006. The lady told me my payments were going to be $144 with them and when I told her no she put me on hold. When she returned she offered me the $55. She read back to me everything I am getting which is a lot more than what I was getting from Liberty Mutual for a lot less price. Is it possible they just dissmissed the report to gain us as customers? I was cooking dinner at the time and my kids started playing loud so all I really heard was cha ching lol.

Car buying/drive test/insurance question.?
By June 16th, the first day of my job, I will need to not only buy a car, but purchase insurance and schedule/complete/pass my drive test. When doing behind the wheel, I went on the freeway after only 1 hour and the guy said I'm only the second person he's felt comfortable with doing that. But my question is, in what order should i do this (car, test, insurance) and how much preparation/time does each take. i'm hoping for my parents to stop fighting so my dad can buy a new one and give me his truck, but there are no guarantees. By the way, I am 16, and don't think this is some worthless endeavor by a kid with no money. I have saved for over 3 years (I know have over 10000$ but I have to buy everything, but my parents will pay for half of the insurance costs. THANKS""
Auto insurance question.?
My step father auto was struck in th readend by a teen the other day. Now his car is not worth much. Maybe 1500 dollars. The 2 body shops gave repair estiments at 2700 and 4300. Now as this is his personnel car and gets 45 miles to the gallon you can understand why he wants to keep using it to get to work. From a legal standpoint, as this is a personnel auto and the other driver is required to carry general libility to cover damage to aother peoples autos. Can a insurance company require him to just settle for the 1,500 dollar value of the car. Or total the car. Or do they have some kind of loop hole. How is it they can require a third party to settle on there terms? As he is not the orginator of the policy, he did not enter into a contract with the insurance provider. Can he just go get it fixed and send them the bill or have the repair compnay send it to the insurance compnay?""

15th October 2017.
Iâve always considered myself a fairly strong person. Physically, though I am female* and not the most muscular type, I always chose to bear the weight(of my choice) myself rather than be helped. I am able to lift 25kg of flour sack without breaking my back, albeit Iâd be moaning a wee bit. I would carry a rucksack full of stuff, that weighed 22kg or more, and travel from a country to another. Mentally, I donât know whatâs strong and whatâs weak. Whoâs to judge? Everyone has different opinions about what âstrengthâ means to them.
To me, being a strong individual means that you take the responsibility of yours, try not to blame others, and are understanding of othersâ needs as well as yours. To make it clear, though, I am not talking about someone who has the perfect(est?!) personality where nobody can find one single flaw. No one is perfect. Period. ...well, a period is never a perfect thing, itâs messy, bloody, and painful...I must not digress. Having the strength means, to me, that you are able to cope with criticism, but also allow yourself to make mistakes and understand that thatâs okay. Itâs about being independent, but also can ask for help when you need it - to do this, you should listen to yourself and know the limits.Â
I used to be the typical âstrong femaleâ character. I never asked for help because I considered asking for anything was showing weakness. If I found myself not being able to further a project, I would give it up altogether. I never talked to anyone about my feelings, whatâs going on inside of my mind, because talking about feelings is only those âgirlyâ*, extremely feminine princess types* would do. Crying in front of other people? Hell no. Every time I cried in front of others than myself, I felt great shame for showing such weakness. I had the most stereotypical âheroineâ characteristics without having the glamourous body type, but it was mainly for my own survival, a part of armour, my war paints, the sword I would show to threaten others who wanted to grind me down.
It wasnât really something I would call âstrengthâ. I would try to be someone who doesnât need anybody, because I was alone.Â
At schools and college, I barely had any friends. My social skills were almost non existent. I didnât know how to make friends, let alone how to communicate with others. As a young child I would rather be reading books, or go outside playing in the stream and field alone. And, my relationship with my family was rather sad, especially with my mum. I donât remember feeling much connected to her. She took a great care of me especially for my education, but perhaps a bit too much for a wee child whose best interest was probably having a good olâ fun time outside, catching dragonflies, crickets, and praying mantis, getting blood sucked by leeches in the stream, and mistakenly taking them to a school class where you were supposed to bring some planaria.
She would rarely compliment me for anything other than high test/exam scores. Often, she would tell me off for picking clothes that were too âboy-ishâ, or would be tutting at my rather bulky body shape. She wanted me to study hard, get accepted by a well known university, get a good job, all the while being a beautiful âfeminineâ girl/woman so I can marry a nice man, start a family and be happy. I never picked skirts or blouses and this was mostly because of the music I had listened to - Wu Tang Clan, Cypress Hills, TLC, Marilyn Manson, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails. She had a lot of expectations on me, and I found it very hard to please her.Â
And, when you arenât used to receiving compliments, itâs hard not only to accept them, but give to others. I always felt awkward receiving compliments, although I was convinced I did a great job in whatever I did. I also did not known much about âlisteningâ to others especially when they told me their troubling minds. I lacked compassion, because I didnât know how to be compassionate of othersâ feelings. When a friend of mine told me her problem/issue, I would offer her solutions, without giving her words that could be of an equivalent to a hug. And of course, it didnât occur to me that what they wanted was a hug, not a solution. I believed in logics and no emotions, because I considered having feelings, being overwhelmed by feelings, was a sign of weakness.
I donât recall my mum asking if I was okay with anything. It was either a compliment(usually about my test/exam results) or deep disappointment. Overall I consider I had a good childhood, but being an older sister and having been told to be a âgood girlâ, responsible, nice, understanding, and to study hard to become a doctor, lawyer, and god forbid I take an interest in comic books and become an artist, which just means a for ever lost, unemployed, refusing to grow up, financially suffering loser.Â
But, how good my memories are any ways? Perhaps I am missing something - maybe my mum wasnât as bad as I have described here. No, I am not blaming my own flaws on mum. She did what she thought was the best. I only know that both she and I had such hard times while I was growing up, and this is not either her or my fault. However, it did affect me greatly, in my early twenties and beyond. It took me nearly 30 years to realise who I am.
As suggested, memories are entirely subjective. I am not good with memories in general, but those I remember, I remember with great details. How truthful my memories are isnât so important. As far as I understand - your memories are of the past, and most likely the people involved in your memories either are long gone, or become distant for whatever reasons. And even if your memories are most likely sprinkled with confettis, covered in buttercream and chocolate swirls - why does it matter so much that your memories are 100% accurate, if their sole purpose of existence is only to be remembered by you, being told to a selective group of people who would have nothing to do with the memories themselves at all? And then, there are people who are trapped in their own memories, glorifying their own past, telling everyone grand stories and how much they had achieved in their lives....that is another story. And, I keep digressing here.Â
I still remember the moment I made my ex(my first boyfriend) weep - he had told me that he would never want to be apart from me. I told him, âWell, you should be a good partner.â, almost in a teasing manner. He began shedding tears and I couldnât understand why, but gave him a hug and comforted him - I may have lacked compassion, but I was not an emotionless monster. My armour worked well.
But, sometimes, you want to be freed of the armour you put on yourself. I kept myself distant with people, mainly because I didnât know how to socialise. When I became deeply engaged with someone, I decided to show my weakness, too, because I trusted the person. Being able to do so brought in both relief and fear - relieved that I donât have to always wear an armour, and feared of âdisappointingâ the other person for showing that....I have my flaws. It was liberating, and scary at the same time. I have to admit I did not do a good job handling this.Â
Having feelings, being loved by someone, being entirely open to the person, all this was a lot for me. I often didnât know the limits. All I cared for until something tender, love, came along, was being strong, creating âartsâ, and fighting for the justice**. I was open enough to accept someone in my life, but at the same time, I feared of the worst, because someone liking, loving me for âwho I amâ was something that never happened to me. I had two boyfriends in my life, they had both told me the same things - that they love me for being strong, independent, and ânot so girlyâ. All the men, women, girls, boys, âhumansâ, who showed their interests in becoming closer to me - which means, more than just friends in my own words - told me the similar story. I was never really flattered hearing these. I was scared if these positive aspects of mine they tell me are only lies.
What if I wasnât strong enough? What if they realised that my strength was only an illusion, and leave me when I had really fallen for them? Fear is something that can prevent you to appreciate great things that are present.
To this date, 15th of October in 2017, I struggle with this. I struggle a lot less now, which is a progress, I guess. I came to terms with my own gender issue, and I have re educated myself that being female, having feminine characteristics do not equal being weak and dependent. And that I can be dependent, needy, flawed, sometimes, and I cannot always hold the same strength. And that I do not need to be perfect. And that knowing my own limits, and giving myself some time to rest both my mind and body is important. And the main focus should be how I progress, grow, be happy, but also process the sadness when it comes.
I am not the strongest of all. And I am learning to be okay with it.
--------
* I mean these adjectives in the most stereotypical manner, which were the norm of how people described femininity in my childhood/youth. Which still stays true to many in South Korea to this day, unfortunately.Â
** My sense of justice, the perfect justice where nobody is judged especially for their appearance, stems from my experiences being a âmisfitâ. Until recently, I had a rather rigid set of morals which were mainly black and/or white.

'Big Brother 19' Allison Grodner Rich Meehan Preview Interview

'Big Brother 19' Allison Grodner Rich Meehan Preview Interview
Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan had toyed with naming their production company Human Zoo, and an afternoon spent at the Big Brother season 19 house reveals why.
Inside the house, the 16 houseguests are seen sitting on one anotherâs laps, dancing while doing the dishes in the kitchen, and even screaming. Observing them just inches away are the longtime executive producers behind the CBS reality series, who settled on Fly on the Wall Entertainment instead.Â
And thatâs exactly what The Hollywood Reporter was when invited for a close-up look behind the scenes of the summer staple: a fly on the wall.
While the houseguests are trapped inside the house as they fight for half a million dollars, Grodner, Meehan and a staff of over 400 are locked away outside of it, in a compound with several floors, multiple rooms and hundreds of monitors.
In Grodnerâs main office, thereâs a flat screen mounted on the wall to keep an eye on what they still refer to as the human zoo. (She says the houseguests often compare themselves to the dolphins at Sea World.)
Next door to Grodnerâs office is Meehanâs, both located on the âstoryâ floor where they have just finished editing the seasonâs premiere episode. Upstairs is the control room, where a team sits intensely focused on logging the castâs every move. Next to that is a room housing the audio crew who are tasked with listening to what the houseguests are saying. Farther down the hall is the operating station that connects directly to the famous diary room, where one houseguest is currently discussing religion and how another playerâs story made them cry.
Itâs just another day at the Big Brother house as the long-running reality hit gears up for its 19th season. After pulling the Big Brother curtain back, THR sat down with the producing team behind the series to discuss what fans can expect this season, their recent live-stream collaboration with Katy Perry and why an all-stars season may never come to fruition.Â
The name Fly on the Wall Entertainment is a nod to the show, yes?
Allison Grodner: Itâs also the programming and unscripted world that weâre in. I come from a documentary background and the way that we like to do these shows is [to be] a fly on the wall, eavesdropping on real life. Big Brother is an example of that. Maybe itâs not completely real life, but within the confines of this bubble it is as real as can be. Itâs the ultimate social experiment.Â
What were the other names that were tossed around?
Rich Meehan:Â The Human Zoo! And you now know why!Â
Your first all-online version of the series, Big Brother: Over the Top, was also the first series for CBS All Access. Will it come back?Â
Grodner:Â CBS and CBS All Access were really happy with how it did. Itâs just a matter of whatâs going on with CBS All Access, which we donât know yet.
Meehan: Star Trek: Discovery is coming out and thatâs their next thing. I donât know what their strategy is.
Grodner:Â We all learned a lot. It was fun to try and re-imagine this series and how to do something in a live 24/7 format as its primary outlet. We learned what works with the audience and what doesnât.Â
Last year it premiered a week after season 18âs finale wrapped. If it does come back do you want it to air immediately following this season again?Â
Grodner: Well, personally ⌠(Laughs.)
Meehan:Â The big thing is, what is that time frame? How soon after the summer? But you also have to keep it away from the next summer. What is that perfect time period in the middle? Iâm not sure.Â
Grodner: You want them to be separate. Part of the reason we have survived as long as we have is that itâs a summer event. Other shows do multiple seasons. With Big Brother itâs that one-time special event. You donât want to infringe on that.
In partnership with YouTube, another digital venture you produced this year is Katy Perryâs Witness World Wide where she invited fans in to watch her live for 96 hours in an effort to promote her latest album. Throughout the live stream she confessed her fandom for Big Brother with guests including Sia pointing out how similar the setup of her special was to the show. How were you approached for this?
Grodner: Live-stream has been a big part of Big Brother since the very beginning, and itâs interesting how technology has caught up with it. Weâve always been a multiplatform show. Katy Perry had this idea to live-stream her life at the launch of her album. It had a lot to do with the themes of her album. It was all her idea. Her and her camp came to us â
Meehan:Â And said they wanted to do a reality event.Â
Grodner:Â We thought it was an interesting way to use the live feed.Â
What were the biggest challenges you faced with this project specifically?
Meehan: Trying to build the production, scheduling it, booking it all while keeping everything a secret. We had six weeks to pull the production together. It was like putting together a reality show, a talk show and a musical performance all at once with limited time.Â
Was it produced here out of this studio, like Big Brother?
Grodner: Not at all. It was a four-day event on location. It was very different in terms of the way that itâs technically set up. We had to invent how to do live-stream from a remote location, not a studio where we have the infrastructure and the wiring and everything thatâs here. Because of our experience with BBOTT and Big Brother, we were a logical company for them to come to. This year weâve been doing more live programming.
We also had This is Life Live on TLC. It was a four-day event as well, just by coincidence. We went live across the country where we did four nights in a row, two cities each night, opening it up to live moments for each episode. TLC announced that we are doing it again. Itâs something weâre uniquely qualified for and something we really like. The way to use live and/or live feed in unscripted is fascinating. With Katy Perry, it was a giant marketing stunt.
What was Perry looking to get out of this?
Grodner: She wanted it to be streamed live and she didnât want to see any of the crew. She wanted to feel like she was just her and not on a television show.
Meehan: She wanted just real people around her. Why weâre diving more into the world of live streaming is it seems like you need to figure out ways to get something to cut through. What the cool part of Witness World Wide was was something would happen and it would become the pop culture news of the day.
What makes someone an ideal subject for this format?
Meehan:Â You need a subject who is willing to allow an unfiltered look at their lives. If you are going to be live 24/7, you canât hide who you are and the audience is savvy enough to know when you are not being genuine.Â
This summer thereâs has been the return push for unscripted content on broadcast networks. Why do you think that is?Â
Meehan:Â One hour dramas were ruling for a long time.Â
Grodner: Budgets for unscripted tend to be lower. Thatâs something that works better in the summer. Thereâs a ton of unscripted shows in the pipeline along many networks right now, which is good. There was a little less in the past years. [For newer shows,] it is really hard to cut through though. When you got a new show now everyone just wants a second season. Itâs amazing that weâre on season 19 of this show and there are only a handful of shows like that right now. We have a fan base that has grown with us generationally. In casting, we see people in their early 20s say, âIâve been watching this with my mom since I was a kid.â Thatâs nice that weâve been able to hold on to more generations, but thatâs hard.Â
Which reality series do you view as your biggest competitor?
Grodner:Â Biggest competitor? Is there one? (Laughs.) Weâve been able to hold steady where we are.
Meehan:Â If we can have three shows in the top 10 every week, weâre happy. We tend to start out strong and then slowly grow. Some shows start big and then fade.Â
Grodner: Slow and steady wins the race! Weâre not going to pretend weâre number one all the time. Americaâs Got Talent is having a great season. We have a company thatâs doing more than just Big Brother. We want to be working all through the year. When unscripted shows do well, itâs good for the genre. Even though Big Brother has been on the air for this long, it is still very cutting-edge in what we do. Weâre turning out three hours of primetime television every week, going live to the internet and having this complete multiplatform experience. So, whatâs the next place to bring the reality genre? One of the places that has really been popping for us and is the future of unscripted is working within a live space.Â
One of the biggest conversations in reality TV right now is the Bachelor in Paradise controversy. They have resumed filming, but what do you make of how everything went down?
Grodner:Â Weâre dealing with real people and real situations on all of these shows. I donât work on that show, but I believe they feel the same: that the safety of our contestants is a priority and always has been.Â
On the Bachelor franchise, itâs known that alcohol is unlimited. On Big Brother, the alcohol provided to the contestants is scarce. Whatâs your philosophy behind that?Â
Grodner:Â Itâs a controlled amount. We are dealing with a very intense situation in tight quarters and they can be locked in the house for days, so everything that is consumed in the house is controlled by the production.
Meehan:Â Itâs a pressure cooker in there, and anytime we put alcohol in, itâs a very small amount.Â
What were the conversations like ahead of this season and deciding on the twist?
Meehan:Â [We decided on the temptation twist] in March. We had multiple concepts that we really liked and we presented them to CBS. We landed on this as the one we were going with. We walked them through the basic strokes of it.Â
Grodner: Temptation has always been a theme throughout the show. Itâs something that happens. Are you tempted to get into a showmance? Are you tempted to go against a group because something is being offered to you? If we made that the theme of this whole summer we thought we could make it bigger and better.Â
Throughout the years, the cast of Big Brother has been diverse in terms of their backgrounds, religious values and political views, but usually politics doesnât come into play. With the current political climate, how do you see that changing this season?
Meehan:Â Thereâs definitely different political views in the house.
Have they been talked about yet?
Meehan:Â I have not heard it. People are smart enough to know itâs a hot-button issue. But theyâre still getting comfortable in there.
Grodner: They havenât been in there long enough to see the differences. We absolutely are representing the country and have a cross-section of voters, supporters and non-supporters of our current president. But I donât know if that will become a big topic in the house. Even though we are representing that cross-section here, I really hope that Big Brother becomes an escape from what we are all being bombarded with.Â
As it stands now, who are the early standouts who have a real shot at winning?
Grodner: (Looks at the live monitor of all the houseguests.) If Megan [Lowder, the 28-year-old dog walker who once worked in a prison in the Middle East] doesnât burn herself out early itâs very possible because she is smart and a leader. Do you know who is playing a great social game right now? Dominique [Cooper.]Â
Are there any showmances already blossoming in the house?
Grodner:Â Thereâs certainly attraction for sure. Mark, who is a romantic, is already smitten with Jessica [Graf.]Â
Meehan:Â He hangs out with Christmas a lot too.Â
Grodner:Â There are a lot. You just saw as we were walking through Christmas and Matt [she was sitting on his lap.] But earlier I saw Raven [Walton] and Matt! Â
What have the past few days looked like in the house?
Grodner: Right now, weâre in the only time of Big Brother where weâre not live. But already within the first 48 hours we have seen flirting, lines drawn, alliances and our first big fight!
Who are the likely suspects for that fight?
Groder:Â Strong personalities.Â
Meehan:Â It was a man and a woman, and a temptation played into it.Â
Grodner:Â Itâs in the Thursday night show. There are temptations everywhere and when you take a temptation, thereâs a consequence. Itâs bound to spark drama if someone takes a temptation.Â
Meehan:Â In night two, there was a temptation in the head of household competition that someone took. It shocked people and caused a bit of an argument.Â
On premiere night, how are the first temptations presented to them?
Meehan:Â They were tempted by money, safety and power. The first one was a large cash temptation.Â
The show has already been renewed for season 20 and the online speculation is that you will focus on the all-stars. Any truth to those rumors?Â
Meehan:Â Iâve heard those rumors too! (Laughs.) We havenât talked about it. It would be interesting to do with 20.
Grodner:Â But we havenât talked about it yet. Is it even possible? Is that something the audience really wants to see? Do you really want to see all returners now? I donât know.Â
Meehan:Â Also, I donât know if we could get all the people we want.Â
Grodner:Â Itâs been a long time.
Meehan:Â A lot of them are married with kids and theyâve evolved so much. Theyâre different people now.Â
Did you watch Katy Perryâs live stream? How do you think the pop star would do in the real Big Brother house? And do you really want to see an all-stars season next year? Sound off in the comments section below and stay tuned to The Live Feed for all things Big Brother.Â

One Big Reason '13 Reasons Why' Is Failing Our Teens
Thereâs nothing easy about being a teen. From peer pressure to parental expectations to body shaming and insecurity, there are countless reasons why teens can get down, frustrated and even desperate at times.
If itâs been a while since youâve been a teen, this might seem like new ground to you. But many parents are getting a crash course in teendom thanks to the new Netflix series â13 Reasons Why.â In the show, Hannah Baker is a 17-year-old high school student that completes suicide. She leaves behind recordings detailing the 13 reasons (which are actually people) responsible for her death.
The show does an excellent job of portraying what todayâs teens face, from bullying to alcohol and drug use to PTSD, rape, self-harm, LGBTQ issues, depression, fitting in with peers and, obviously, suicide. But overall, thereâs one big reason why the series does teens â and their parents â a tremendous disservice. Teens who watch the show (and spoiler alert: itâs teens who are watching the show) are left with no hope or direction on where to go if they feel at risk for suicide.
The fact that Hannahâs school counselor, teachers and even her loving parents were clueless about her suicide plans isnât actually that unrealistic. I lived with my husband, Bill for years without understanding the depth of his depression and suicidal ideation. He bought into the stigma of mental illness, and denied that he had a problem with depression. Looking back, all the signs were there for me to see, but he was the great pretender when he needed to be. His silence cost him his life â and my lack of knowledge made me just spin in circles wondering what I could do.
Now, I have the knowledge and training to know what to do. But thatâs not the case for teens watching â13 Reasons Why,â possibly considering Hannahâs decision to complete suicide a logical â or even glamorous â choice.
What I teach teens now is exactly what â13 Reasons Whyâ is lacking. I direct teens on what to do and where to go for help and I offer a strong message of hope. Too often, those closest to teens â their parents, teachers and counselors â do not have the education they need to intervene when a teen is depressed or suicidal. In my book R U OK?, I outline the warning signs and risk factors of depression and suicide. I point out the common myths surrounding suicide. I tear down the social stigma around mental illness and let teens know itâs okay â and necessary â to get help and treatment.
Recently, an 8-year-old boy in Cincinnati, Ohio completed suicide. Video footage of the boy shows he was beaten up in the school bathroom, after which his classmates stepped over him as he lay unconscious on the floor. Bullying is just another factor that leads to depression â and it can start at a very young age. Kids today donât need 13 reasons to complete suicide. They need one good reason and zero people intervening to get them the help they need.
That help is exactly what â13 Reasons Whyâ lacks. Thanks to Netflix, these conversations may be happening more and more. Blaming teachers, parents or counselors isnât going to help save our teens. What will help is providing teens with the resources and support they need when life inevitably gets tough. In discussing and educating about suicide, our schools need to be proactive rather than reactive, when, like in Hannahâs case, itâs too late.
What you can do
If your teens are watching â13 Reasons Why,â itâs time for a healthy conversation about suicide and depression. Talking about suicide is the first step to prevention; sometimes, the thoughts they leave unsaid are the most dangerous. Approach the topic as you would any other topic you discuss with your child: drugs, drinking, sex, bullying, etc.
The most important tip I give parents and teachers is to be direct. Start with questions like, âDo you talk about suicide at school or with friends? What do you think about it?â Ask about the underlying problems that may create thoughts of suicide for your child or their peers. Listen without overreacting. This keeps the door open for future conversations. Discuss some of the more common warning signs of suicide, many of which are depicted in â13 Reasons Why,â and which Iâve also outlined here:
Teen Suicide Warning Signs
Disinterest in favorite extracurricular activities
Substance abuse
Behavioral problems
Withdrawing from family and friends
Changes in sleep patterns: sleeping too much or too little, changes in eating habits: overeating, binging, not eating
Neglecting personal appearance, not showering or having a messy appearance
Lack of concentration
Declining grades
Preoccupation with death
Risk-taking or self-destructive behavior
Frequent complaints of boredom
Does not respond as before to praise

Confessions on How To Handle Education Now That Devos Has Officially Sworn Into a Place of Power Enabling Tragedy If We Don't Enlighten her We Guarantee Our Opportunity Expired until Continus Time to Ever Further The Education of Any Ones Mind; Ending Free Individualized Thought To Die With No New Knowledge Absorbed By The Massful Minds
In California you don't need a teaching degree to teach at a charter school or in private sector but unlike charter private sector often has numerous own qualifications of their own often requiring a teach degree or a doctorate in field to teach unlike charter schools which fail here because they have teachers who don't have degrees or new ones who don't know what the heck they are doing. Actually recently a charter administration building that runs 14 in LA was raided for misuse of funds and they found according to the news clip I had watched (not sure on If accurate or added fake news embellishment) tons of illegal drugs being stored in these buildings boxes of them. So yeah although the clip said they were being compliant with authorities makes you wonder what the hell was going on in that school network system and the people in charge of those children hah. I did vote trump however DeVos is not qualified and is quite terrifying the fact she couldn't state the definitions of growth and proficiency let alone decipher between the two terms. She also does not think highly of disabled services or special education and feels they should just be not given the tools they need to be successful or achieve their highest potential. In fact feels they are a waste of time and wants to turn the clock back to how they were viewed in the 50's and 60's which is wrong in more ways then I can even begin to get into. Just because a child is different does not make them stupid or incapable of learning they just learn differently in ways than others and need a bit more time, compassion, patience and care with help and guidance from a passionate educator who is willing to work with them and specialize their lesson plan for them to be successful. Would you fail a kid in a wheelchair or on krutches for not running the mile in PE with all the other students? No. So why would you put students in such situations treating them all the same across the board in all subjects. I truly don't think people realize how strong the teacher unions are or why they are necessary to be. They fight for education and often instead of new textbooks or materials in the classroom the state will decide to grant money only for beautifying the campus aka build buildings with no desks in them for anyone to be able to teach, plant flowers and do some pretty mascot mural painting on the gymnasium while the nets are inside in shreds and the uniforms recycled each year reused decade after decade and every class has some mandatory 10-35 dollar material fee that totals up to be quite pricey by the end of the first day with 7 classes and not to mention actually going to buy school supplies and later on project materials and field trip fees etc. Yes I do believe some administrators get overpaid and there are one too many of them necessary on a board but that has nothing to do really with the teachers union it's separate and the teachers all the ones I know work absurd long hours, multiple jobs because their salary wouldn't even cover rent and utilities let alone if they have kids all the fees I mentioned above in public schools mind you, live paycheck to paycheck, get almost no tax breaks because they can't afford to own a house on their income alone etc. Truly passionate and love their job and students but really stress about being able to cover groceries or anything else that may occur like a car needing repair or washing machine broke out of warranty. Cutting their salaries is about the most moronic thing when it's been cut almost every other year as it is to where they are barely getting by some not even with maxed out credit cards. Our teachers are the ones with kids every day. They work their ass off to try and better the child's life and broaden their horizons. They are the ones who prepare the youth for the future we all will be a part of and want them to be able to be functioning in society when they join it. The ones who give them those tools to be able to do that and get jobs and be independent are the teachers who instill knowledge into their minds. Crippling them and their resources and burning them out means no bright future and hinders the amount the children are able to have taught to them for them to learn making them less informed and lacking skills. We need teachers! We need someone who knows what the hell they are doing and we need those who are qualified to take a stand and make sure they speak up loud enough to make a case stated with in refutable facts and data to help guide and enlighten DeVos on the system and what public education and educators need to be more successful and what ways the students should be tested to see their progress and milestones toward success in learning. Force her to understand growth needs to be the focus not proficiency as we have been doing with the failing common core where the top of the class and the bottom of the class are ignored and not given what they need to move ahead of their peers or catch up to them and be recognized for their goals reached not just called a failure because they aren't up to speed with their peers. Take a 5th grader. They are not reading at a 5th grade level like they should and the middle range of the class is. This student has a kindergarten reading level and was just pushed through the system feeling more loss and less engaged each year. A teacher comes across them and gets them to a 4th grade reading level by the end of the year. Now if you go by proficiency their peers are now at 6grade level so that kid is labeled a failure and a waste of time and not worth bothering with. If you go by growth you see the huge improvement in the year moving their reading level up by 4 grade levels and see they are able to learn and smart if given the tools and tlc needed. Growth measurement that child is a success and met beyond their goals of just being up one or two reading levels but did 4! Now take that same 5th grade class you have a student who is reading 10th grade level. Way beyond what their peers are. By proficiency she or he would be told to not read ahead and to have to read with their peers at 5th grade level and be unchallenged and bored often then not caring and then not doing homework because why bother it's not a challenge and is just more of a punishment and makes learning a chore because for that student they aren't learning they are frustrated bored and when asked to give vocab words they don't know the definition of to do assignments with they are trying to guess what their peers don't know since they knew all but maybe one and need to come up with 20 words and then get docked because some of the words they guessed wrong and the teacher deemed too easy. Teacher is focused on proficiency therefore not focused on child being beyond this and extremely agitated and miserable; the reason they are probably talking in class ,when they shouldn't, doodling or other behaviors not deemed appropriate and punishable worthy. Now take growth this teacher notices and either sends them to an honor class to transfer to or takes the other students also beyond the reading level say you have 6 students who are above and beyond ranging from 7-10 reading level. The teacher gives them their own book probably around an 8.5 reading level or 9 depending on the students and they will have their own assignments to that book to work on as the rest of the class works on the other book and its assignments. I've seen it done so don't say this doesn't happen teachers focused on growth do this quite frequently if they are attune with their students and their capabilities as well as willing to help them when they need it and get stuck and promote positivity with the you can do it you are capable i know you are smart attitude. These students focused with growth learn at a level challenging to their needs and not just overlooked or forced to waste time feeling as if it is pointless to show up because it's so torturous and infuriating that their peers are just not getting what they understood two weeks ago and are still discussing it in class. In growth everyone is challenged and the whole class is engaged and learning new material that is appropriate for their mind to continue to build and expand in becoming informed on the endless information and knowledge just waiting for their brains to absorb! Do you see why now it's important ,someone in charge understand the difference and why it is terrifying she doesn't? Let alone believes in proficiency more ,so based on what she says in her jumbled answers, then in growth! The schools need a serious fix after no child left behind and the program of common core followed it that needs to go away. We need someone who knows what the hell they are talking about to be in charge of redevelopment of a working system that benefits all students disabled, average and honor/gate program kids. SAVE OUR FUTURE OF EDUCATION HELP DEVOS BE INFORMED TO KNOW BASICS TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO DO HER JOB AND NOT DESTROY THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM FOREVER OR WORSE ABOLISH IT FROM EXISTENCE IN THIS COUNTRY FOREVER.
Note: some of this I wrote shorthand as originally was to be a comment on a video that was too long so then posted as a facebook post on my own feed that I felt I wanted to express here and share my own perspective to all of you I interact here. You can agree or not that is what freedom of speech is all about and politics are definitely a hot topic today so please be kind and do not throw personal attacks on my physical attributes or character in response keep it on topic about the politics and not on one anotherâs human identities in this planet we all reside on that is much smaller than we often come to consider. So be polite , respectful and have a great rest of your time on tumblr on this blissful night :)
