Bollywood Movies Part CLXXIII

Housewife Sulu (Vidya Balan) decides to become a RJ for the radio station that she won a pressure cooker from when she notices that they’re auditioning. Meanwhile, her husband Ashok (Manav Kaul) and son Pranav (Abhishek Sharrma) deal with their own problems at work and school.

Tumhari Sulu is a delightful movie! Vidya Balan shines as the high school dropout turned housewife turned RJ. She has so much support from the people she works with and for, even when they’re laughing at her eccentricities. Neha Dhupia is wonderful as Maria, manager of the radio station. Favorite songs are Ban Ja Rani and Manva Likes to Fly. Neither song has subtitles.

When 25 Indian nurses and 15 Pakistani nurses are held by the ISC lead by Abu Usman (Sajjad Delafrooz), RAW (Indian Intelligence) gets Tiger (Salman Khan) to lead a team to get the Indian nurses out. Meanwhile, ISI (Pakistani Intelligence) gets Tiger’s wife Zoya (Katrina Kaif) to lead their team of operatives to get the Pakistani nurses out.

TW for movie: torture, rape mention.Tiger Zinda Hai is a sequel to the 2012 Ek Tha Tiger that is also based on the 2014 abduction of nurses by ISIL. As a Salman Khan masala movie, it works well. It fails as a portrayal of the actual events, and I believe all the nurses would have died if the movie was actually how they were to be rescued. I enjoyed Sajjad Delafrooz in his first meaty role. He did extremely well as the villain made by American interference in Iraq. The ensemble cast was quite good. I also enjoyed that every time I said to myself “I want more Katrina Kaif,” she appeared. Favorite song is Tera Noor (no subtitles).

Venkidi (Prithviraj Sukumaran), a high-school drop out who is hard of hearing, dreams of building his own airplane and flying it with his best friend, who is also the girl he loves, Janaki (Durga Krishna). Her parents don’t approve of the relationship, and want her instead to marry her cousin from Singapore Anandan (Saiju Kurup).

Vimaanam is a bittersweet tale of love and ambition. Venkidi’s attempts to build an airplane are fascinating, especially because of how the various people in village try to help him in their different fashions. The supporting actors are quite good, with Alencier Ley Lopez, Sudheer Karamana, and Lena all leaving lasting impressions. Durga Krishna is very good in her debut role as Janaki. Favorite songs are Anthike Varikente and Meghakanivinu. Neither song has subtitles.
