Kaoru gently guided Kanata out to the water, up to where it reached their hips. The waves lapped at their stomachs and Kaoru turned to face Kanata. 

“Alright Kanata-kun, you wanted to learn how to swim, right? The first thing you have to be able to do is float.” He let go of Kanata’s hand. “To float, you want to arch your back and spread your arms out like this,” he spread his own arms out, brushing Kanata’s arm with his fingertips. “It’ll feel weird at first but I won’t let you float away.” 

“Okay, I will ‘trust you’, Kaoru.” Kanata leaned back, grabbing Kaoru’s hand before lifting his legs. Kaoru saw Kanata’s body tense up at the sensation and his hands started floundering. 

“I got you, Kanata-kun, just relax,” Kaoru said softly, squeezing Kanata’s hand. Kanata let out a breath and tried to relax. Kaoru moved his other hand under Kanata’s back to stabilize him. “Just like that, okay?” 

“How do you feel?” He asked after Kanata was able to float on his own. 

“I feel…’free’.” Kanata chuckled. “That was ‘fun’, Kaoru.” 

“Alright, since you’ve mastered floating, I think we can move on to our last lesson for the day. Holding your breath underwater. You need to be able to control your breath when swimming, especially if you’re going to be diving.” 

Kaoru took in a breath and sank beneath the waves for a moment before rising up again. “Just like that, but for as long as you can, okay?” 

Kanata nodded and took a deep breath with Kaoru and the two boys dipped their heads beneath the surface. Kaoru’s heart beat heavy in his chest as he went over his plan one last time. He opened his eyes and was taken aback by how ethereal Kanata looked, his hair floating around him, eyes closed serenely. He let out the breath he was holding before closing his eyes again and reaching for Kanata’s face, pulling him closer until their lips met. The salty taste of the water mixed with the softness of Kanata’s lips on his own. 

Kanata leaned into the kiss, pulling Kaoru closer until the two of them had to surface for air. They were breathing heavily, Kaoru’s eyes already burning from the brief moment he had opened them under the water, but he wouldn’t trade the view of Kanata under the waves for anything. 

“Were you ‘planning’ to do ‘that’ all day, Kaoru?” Kanata asked. 

“M-maybe, and what about it?” Kaoru’s face flushed. 

Kanata pulled him in for another kiss, still tasting like the ocean. “You could have just ‘asked’ if you wanted a ‘kiss’.”

A few hours later, as the two were heading home for the night, Kaoru’s eyes were still red and sore. He would probably need to get some of his eye drops out again and pray that they didn’t get some weird infection from the water. 

“Did you open your ‘eyes’ under the ‘water’, Kaoru?” 

Kaoru sighed. “You looked so pretty, how was I not going to look at you like that?” 

Kanata lightly punched Kaoru’s arm. 

“I’m hurt, Kanata-kun! Is it a crime to think my boyfriend is beautiful?” 

“Let’s just ‘go home’ and get some ‘eyedrops’ for you before you ‘dry out’, okay?” 

“Fine, but I want a kiss to make it feel better.”

I'm posting this a bit early in case the 12th isn't a good mental health day. And I'm sorry if the random tag is annoying or if this post takes up too much space on dash.

On Oct 12 2016, I made a coincedental decision that has changed my life as a whole. A choice that has led me to so much pain but also so many happy memories and irreplcable friends. I made my pfp on Quotev a Genis Sage picture and somehow ended up involved in a Symphonia rp group 💕.

I had loved Genis as a character since I was a child watching my sister play at my Nanny's (my cousin would always delete her save before we even reached triet) and when we got a copy of the game when I was around 11/12 I had him on my team for the most part. It was my fascination with half elves and the mysterious Kharlan War Era that led to the creation of Mana, Oracle, Lee, 3rd, and Sunny. But those were all just childish writing in a notebook I hid from the world. Im sure lil me would die on the spot to hear that they are charas so many people know. I always knew that I loved to write but it was for charas like Sherlotta who were niche and not from a series as big as Tales so I never wrote Genis. Well until that day, I was too awkward to tell them I wasnt an rp blog and fully committed to it.

And look where that has led me. Here to you all. This journey may have been long and filled with things I'd never wish on anyone but I'm happy. So many of you have encouraged me and been there for me. I love and appreciate you all. Under the cut imma try to have things for a lot of you all word wise as gratitude. But thank you all so much, there are no amount of words or tangible sentences to express how much you all mean to me. And a happy birthday to my Genis interp who I wish i still wrote

are all of the dragons in dracones mundi based on folklore? or are there a few original dragons in there?

Of the 70 dragon species, 14 of them are either based on pop culture or are a non-folklore idea (leaving 56 dragons which are 100% folklore)

The fourteen not-folklore-dragons are...

The Dancing Dragon - which is kinda based on folklore but it's more accurately an interpretation of dancing dragon puppets from Lunar New Year festivals AND the answer to "why is dragon fruit called dragon fruit?" (these dragons can be bright purple and pink, like dragon fruit).

Glitterdrakes are small sparkly dragons that are based on small collectable dragon statues that every dragon fan and goth collects. They are a small species of firedrake, and their frills and horns are based on the collectable statues and on high fantasy art. While most firedrakes are dull reds and greens and browns, glitterdrakes are ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, amethyst purple, shining gold, burning amber, moonlike silver... These are very gaudy fantasy dragons but rather than being large enough to ride on these are tiny and mostly hunt birds.

Dinodrakes are 'cool dinosaur inspired dragons'. A lot of cryptozoological dragons such as Mokele-Mbembe are theorised to be modern dinosaurs by conspiracy theorists, and while I do have the Congan Plated Dragon based on Mokele-Mbembe/Emela N'touka etc. I wanted to have just a fun dinosaur inspired dragon without being constrained to making it accurate to preexisting lore.

Sandwyrms are based on Shai Hulud from Dune and on Graboids from Tremors and just the pop-culture idea of a terrible big worm lunging out of the sand at you. Sandwyrms are not 100% based on pop-culture, however, as their juvenile form is olgoi-khorki or the Mongolian Death Worm.

Coastwyrms are things I made up to answer the question "if dragons are real, which dragon does a dragon-headed-caterpillar resemble?". I also made the juvenile form incredibly cute to gain clout on the internet.

Snapdragons are to answer the question "if dragons are real, which dragon is the snapdragon flower named after?"

Cliffwyrms are just seagull dragons. I made them up. I think dragon seagulls are fun.

The Antarctic Jaculus was made up because I had no dragons in Antarctica. This dragon ties together the cliffwyrm and the inland jaculus, showing that the diving behaviour of the javeline serpent from folklore originated out at sea.

Butterfly dragons are dragons based on artwork of dragons with butterfly wings - my winged serpents have 4 wings so I thought I'd slap a butterfly motif in there. I could base it on the Pyrausta from Cyprus but to me pyrausta isn't dragon-shaped so I'm just making up my own bug dragon for fun.

Seaturtle Dragon (name pending) is loosely based on turtle dragons; I have several species of turtle dragon which ARE based on mythology so I thought "I will put a big one in the ocean as well"

Firethroat Wyverns (previously named 'grey wyverns' but they are getting a revamp) are based on spiky grey wyverns from film and TV. They are easily trained and therefore make great actor animals, which is the in-universe reason why all Hollywood dragons have that sort of grey-spiky look!

Ice dragons are a cousin of firethroat wyverns that live in the Rocky Mountains in North America. They are based on the pop-culture idea of an ice dragon, a sort of inversion of the fire breathing dragon. Not much folklore for ice dragons.

Forest wyverns are based on contemporary fantasy art of dragons with leaves-for-wings.

Prairie dragons (name pending) I added because we have a 'fire elemental', an 'ice elemental', a 'nature elemental', so if we were following the trope of fire/water/earth/air we'd need a lightning dragon too. A storm dragon. No folklore I was just being silly with this one. (Element concept link)

I didn’t think I liked eggs

Soo if you didn’t know I have Arfid, which I haven’t really talked about too much because I still deal with feelings of embarrassment/shame surrounding it. Plus I have only come to this conclusion due to extensive personal research and reflection, as this is an eating disorder that is still relatively new so receiving an official diagnosis can be difficult, so part of me doesn’t even feel qualified to speak on it... but all this to say, I didn’t think I liked eggs.

The one time I did have eggs, it was at a baby shower. My personal experience with Arfid stems from a general disinterest/discomfort in certain tastes and textures of unfamiliar and overly flavourful food groups. I’m very selective, very plain, and find that I tend to get overwhelmed/stressed easily when confronted with foods that have a very distinctive amount of flavor. So, when I had eggs, at the baby shower, I didn’t know that they were devilled eggs, and that devilled eggs actually taste really fucking different than normal eggs. So, just based off of that assumption, little nine or 10 year old Shay just went... well, I guess I don’t like eggs then 🤷‍♀️

Flash forward to yesterday, me and my best friend, let’s call her Z, are brainstorming simple foods that I’ll be able to make when I am living on my own and away for school. She says we should try eggs, because they’re pretty easy to make. I reluctantly agree, because honestly, it’s been a long time, so maybe my taste buds have evolved. This, in itself, is a big success for someone who has arfid, because trying new foods isn’t as simple as it is for people who don’t struggle with it.

So, Z teaches me how to make eggs. Normal eggs, scrambled eggs, because they’re easy, and I try the eggs, and I like them, and they’re much more bland and manageable than devilled eggs were, and I’m just writing this because I’m proud of myself, as silly as it sounds, for not only learning how to make them, but for giving them a second chance. I’m also really grateful to Z, because she has never made me feel stupid or childish for both my very limited cooking knowledge, as well as my very selective eating tendencies, which is more than I can say for even family members at home.

If Calla had to list her top ten favorite things in this world, sunsets would be number six. Ever since she was a little girl, she’d been fascinated by the blends and varieties of colors they showed. They were different looking every day, and that’s what kept her watching them every night. As she waited outside the airport, she couldn’t help but stare at the one that lit up above the airport building. 

The piece of white cardboard her aunt had shoved into her hand is loosely gripped by her fingers. She protested the idea of her aunt making a sign with their names on it, but her aunt had gently pushed her out the door insisting it was the only way they would know it was her picking them up. In black sharpie, the names SNUGGERUD and CHESLEY are written in big, bold, uppercase letters. She felt silly holding it, and the stares she was receiving from various people didn’t help. 

She wishes she made Annie or Shay come with her. Their presence would calm her nerves, but Shay was studying for a test and Annie was at work. 

Meeting new people wasn’t something Calla was a fan of. Her sister would’ve been a better option to pick up the hockey players, but Cassie was no were to be found, as always. But she promised Aunt Ginny and Uncle Chris she would make them feel at home on the car ride back home, and she intended on keeping that promise. 

Two teenage boys walking toward her snapped her out of her thoughts. She took a moment to compose herself, smoothing out her tank top and adjusting her baseball cap. Aunt Ginny’s words from earlier pop into her mind, and she flashes a bright smile, in order to make the boys feel welcome. 

The two boys stare at the sign as they stand waiting to cross to the truck, and Calla clears her throat. “I’m assuming you're Ryan and Jimmy? Or, are you two random guys who need a ride and are gonna pretend you are?”

The USA hockey sweatshirts the two are wearing already confirmed the answer to her question, but cracking jokes was the way she removed any awkward silence from a conversion. It was her best quality, at least in her opinion. 

“Um,” One of them says, not meeting her eyes. “Is there a back seat? How will one of us sit?” He puts his bags in the tailgate while he waits for an answer from the blonde. 

She laughs for a moment, and the two boys look at her extremely confused. “It’s Uncle Charlie’s old truck. It has one row, but fits three people,” She taps the side of the truck, motioning them into the car. She shuts it, closing the tailgate before getting in the driver's seat. “Alright, if you wanna open the windows, you have to crank the handle down. I suggest doing so, because the AC of this car hasn’t worked since my brother was born. He's 18, so it hasn’t worked for 19 years.” 

The car ride to Northville is filled with Calla asking the boys questions, wanting to get to know them better. She learns the one with the shaggier hair is Jimmy, and the other one is Ryan. She doesn’t say it, but she can’t imagine how hard it is for them to leave their homes and their families.

She could never imagine leaving Michigan. This is where her family was, and would probably always be. 

“Can we play music?” Ryan interrupts her train of thought. She forgot to go through the process of finding the stations that worked before she started driving. Still focusing on the road, she begins pressing various buttons and dials before the sound of country music fills the car.  

Out of the corner of her eye, she sees their faces at the long dirt road ahead of them. There’s a house just down the road, and one directly diagonal from it. “Uncle Charlie said I’m in charge of showing you two the farm chores you’ll do when you’re not at hockey.”

“Farm chores? We’re living on a farm?” Ryan’s face pales.

“Dude,” Jimmy whacks his arm. “I told you we were. I think it’s sick.” Jimmy shoots Calla a smile. 

“My whole family lives on it. My grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. All in different houses by family.”

“That’s really cool.” Jimmy nods his head.

“We’re actually gonna drive to my Mimi and Pops house. Sunday night is family dinner night, and everyone gets together. You get to meet everyone!”

“Great!” Ryan throws his head back, an annoyed groan slipping out of him. 

“It’ll be fun, Ry.” Jimmy pats his friend's shoulder.

The best word to describe what Calla pulls into is chaos. There's a number of children running around, clearly a variety of ages. She nearly runs over Willow’s soccer ball, braking just before she popped it. “Watch it Calla.” The 10 year old redhead glares at her as she opens the car door. 

“Sorry Willow. Next time, don’t kick it into the driveway please.”

“There is no driveway Calla. It’s dirt.” She rolls her eyes before stomping off into the backyard. 

Calla turns to the two boys who are amazed at the amount of people at the house. “You’ve never seen a big family before?” She laughs, leading them toward the porch. “The adults are on the back porch, I’ll introduce them fi-”

Before she can finish talking, a football comes flying toward the three of them. They duck, at Calla’s voice urging them too. The football is maybe an inch away from hitting Ryan in the head, but lands behind him. His eyes are wide as three boys stare guiltily at him. “Xander! What did Pop say about throwing the football?” The blonde yells, and the tallest looks visibly scared. 

“Watch where you’re throwing it before throwing it.” He doesn’t meet her eyes, looking at the patch of grass on the dirt road.”

“Right. You almost just gave Ryan a concussion. Now go, and remember the rule,” The three boys attempt to take off, but remember they need the football. “I’m sorry about them. When you’re at this house, always watch for flying balls. They could be anywhere.”

“Noted.” Jimmy shakes his head, stepping inside and looking around. 

“As I was saying, come meet the adults,” Calla opens the patio door, motioning them to come. “Jimmy, Ryan.​​ This is everyone. That’s Aunt Sheila and Uncle Mike, and over there is Auntie Ginny and Uncle Chris, the one’s you’ll be living with, as well as me. Right here is Aunt Sandy, and then at the end is Aunt Colette and Uncle Rick,” She points them out as she introduces them. Both are in shock at the number of aunts and uncles she has. “Aunt Melissa and Uncle Adam are on vacation. You’ll meet them soon.”

“Okay.” Ryan nods his head, soaking up the information. 

“I’ll introduce you guys to the kids next. All my cousins, and Connor, my brother,” She turns her attention to her Auntie Ginny. “Is Cassie here?”

“Nope. She’s at Spencer’s.”

Calla rolls her eyes. Her twin was almost never home anymore, spending every second she had of free time she had with her boyfriend. “That right there is Lucas. He’s 6 and you’ll see him everyday, because he’s Aunt Ginny and Uncle Chris’s. The blonde girl playing with dolls over there is Kendall, and she's four.” At the sound of her name, Kendall snaps her head to look at Calla, and runs toward her. 

“I’m Kendall,” She looks up at Jimmy, a pink cowgirl hat falling off her head. “You should come play with me.” She grabs Jimmy’s hand, trying to pull him with her. 

“Well, she likes you. 3. What were their first impressions of each other? How does that compare to their impressions of each other now?

First impressions of each other … oh man . to put it simply cat was mostly pissed at rafa (her cousin) for dragging in some random girl who didnt even know  like… anything about driving cattle/horses especially on sebas’ (cats little brother) first drive . so she was automatically just kind of annoyed by everything shay did a little bit . thought she was a little too all over the place and just another thing she had to deal with on her already very full plate . shay thought cat was lwk a dick but also could NOT stop talking to her ,,,, a little entranced . a little intimidated though. she’s a loser like that she kind of falls for everybody a little bit . ❤️

“now” is hard to define because like … there’s a lot of big shifts in the story and i don’t think any which time is like the “now” of the story bc it goes on for a pretty long time . but like … later on in general? cat appreciates shay’s other traits a little more besides her like nervous-kicked-dog-who-is-also-wayyyy-too-silly-in-the-wrong situations demeanor . she appreciates her resilience a little more and like . notices more about her a little . the details and such . :) . shay sees that cat is just as scared (if not more ) as she is . she gets more used to cats like … quiet way of appreciating people . she’s still very talks but a little more respectful of cats boundaries than she originally was (and cat is also a little more willing to lower those walls for her)

8. How do they communicate with each other? Are there any recurring phrases or gestures unique to their relationship?

how do they communicate with each other? badly ❤️ very badly esp at first they have VERY different communication styles (very externalized and obvious / oblivious vs quiet looks and subtle) . i think okay this is hard to describe bc they’re all in my head but like . the way they evolve over time to slowly like . communicate better is so so special to me like cat being a little clearer with her meaning and shay keeping an eye out for Looks and cat letting shay touch her more just like in causal communication and shay being a little quieter and less everywhere and it’s just . it’s very important to me . i doooo want them to have a. reoccurring thing but i haven’t settled on one yet. 

11. Does one act as a narrative foil to the other? How so?

oh very much so …. it is kind of a Lot to explain if i were to fully go into it but there’s also the simple stuff like just. how contrasting their personalities/ choices are and how that brings out a lot in each other . they’re so much fun ,,, promise (girl who is too tired to fully write this out and also bc it would be too long and not make sense)(not that anything on this post does tbh im very sleepy)

20. what is their best memory together?

ough it’s impossible for me to speak in definitives ever i fear . also the story isn’t fully tightly mapped yet espppp in some spots so it’s hard for me to say concretely …. i think any memory they have together is both something fond and something raw . there is always a win and there is always a loss with them

Svdestada's new album Candela is giving me more post-hardcore vibes than their previous albums' punky black metal, but in a fun Shai Hulud metalcore-adjacent kinda way with a dose of Kvelertak.

I'm only on the first listen, but the new Chainsword feels better than their (already good) debut. Bolt Thrower worship is my religion.

Speaking of, the new Misotheist album is a violent flurry of black metal and it's icy, mean, and has some solid riffs. Not too sold on the song lengths, but I could use more listens on this one.

A new Spectral Voice record after seven years is leaving another big, silly smile on my face. Cavernous, eerie, otherworldly. God, it's just so for me. It's not the death-doom that really enchants me - the gothic, florid, melodramatic My Dying Brides and Theatres of Tragedy - but I still love it.

Not a new release, but I'm also listening to the Bodies Bodies Bodies soundtrack because Disasterpeace and also because I really should rewatch that movie. After having seen it once a rewatch is probably really fascinating.

Noir shoots a net from a gun at the creature, doing a fist pump as it falls to the ground.

“What do we do with it?” Shay leans forward, trying to take in Krampus’ appearance. “We can learn so mu-”
