Chicago Fire Season 2 Ep. 20 "A Dark Day"

A big explosion happens at the start of a charity run outside a Chicago hospital. Dawson and Casey are taking part. People in Chicago are in chaos as police search for the attackers. Mills finds and disarms a second bomb in an underground garage. Dawson is trapped and Casey and Severide race to find her while their colleagues help victims above ground.

This episode is part of a crossover with Chicago P.D. that ends at 8:40 p.m. It's on the Chicago P.D. Season 1 DVD set.

Dawson and Casey help other volunteers at a "Chicago P.D. and Chicago F.D. Race Against Cancer" event outside Chicago Medical. Kim Burgess, with her niece Zoe, joins them to help set up a tent. Dr. Holly Whelan and her sister Imogene also help. Dawson registers for the race and goes into the building. Moments later, a bomb goes off. The blast tears a hole in the hospital, sprays concrete into the streets, and hurts many, including Zoe and Imogene. Once the shock wore off, Casey helped the girls while realizing Dawson was probably trapped.

Boden and the squad help the wounded and rescue people from the race and the hospital. Mills thinks a car bomb caused the blast. This means there are other explosives out there. He and Cruz find a bomb in the parking structure. Mills defuses it.

Shay avoids falling debris but punctures her side on a piece of rebar. Her old partner, Rafferty, doesn't notice, so Shay keeps the wound a secret and patches it up in private to help the others. The wound is worse than she thought.

Dr. Arrata finds Zoe has a crushed liver and needs an operation. In the other hospital wing, he operates on the girl as Burgess waits outside. The operation fails. Zoe needs a full transplant. Dr. Arrata looks for a replacement, but it's damaged and unusable. He tells Burgess the bad news, and she cries because her niece might not live. Even Kevin can't comfort her.

Imogene goes from fine to having a seizure. Her brain swelled from a concussion, so she goes into surgery unconscious. Doctors operate to relieve the pressure. They don't want to lose two young lives on the same day.

Casey and Severide searches the rubble for Dawson. They call, but get no answer. Dawson stirs on the other side of the rubble, weak and in pain. She can't scream, so she knocks two metal poles together. The noise leads them to her. With Herrmann's help, they lift her out. The whole team celebrates.

Then the rest of Chicago P.D. and FBI members arrive. Hank Voight targets a group of diplomats from Syria. They're in town for their ambassador's off-the-books liver transplant.

With the blast over, Shay's adrenaline easees. She collapses to the floor, unconscious and bleeding from her earlier wound.

Taken Hostage - Hailey Upton x Halstead!Sister!Reader - One Chicago - Fire/PD/Med

Request:  Hi! I was wondering if you could do a Hailey Upton x Halstead sister where they are either a doctor (maybe a paramedic) and Hailey and Jay bring in a culprit who needs to get their arm checked out. But the culprit ends up taking the reader hostage?

You worked on a different shift to the people Jay and Hailey were familiar with at Firehouse 51. You worked with Alison Rafferty after Chout was transferred onto the other shift of the three for some reason.

Main had given Ambulance 61 the call for police assistance. You didn’t know Jay had put the call in for an ambo to be rolled after a suspect turned culprit had damaged their arm enough to needing a hospital.

Neither your brother or your girlfriend expected you and Rafferty to show up as the culprit was handed over. The damage had been enough that the culprit wasn’t in handcuffs.

Hailey and Jay regretted that as soon as you were grabbed.

Rafferty was stuck at the side door whilst Hailey and Jay had their guns pointed at the culprit.

You were still as you felt the scalpel against your neck.

Your eyes flickered between Jay and Hailey as you heard them yelling. The ambulance was small, neither of them could get closer without risking you.

You didn’t know Rafferty had a needle of sedative in her hand as you spotted her in your peripheral vision.

The culprit’s breath stank of metal, the sickening warmth making you nauseous before you saw Rafferty move.

You managed to shove the arm holding the scalpel away as the effects of the sedative took its hold on the culprit. Launching yourself out of the ambulance, Hailey let out an ooof as you landed in her arms, clinging to her for dear life as Jay and Rafferty assessed the situation.

After the culprit was secured to a gurney, Jay let out a breath, immediately checking on you as your head peaked out from Hailey’s shoulder.

“Are you okay? Are you alright?” Jay’s questions were silenced as you went from Hailey’s arms to his, you could feel him press his lips to the crown of your head as he hugged you.

Rafferty cleared her throat.

“As much as I would love to continue this, we should get this criminal to med before the sedative wears off. Also their arm looks broken, so there’s that-” Rafferty was cut off as you hugged her. Her body tensed before she eventually hugged you back.

It seemed her time with Leslie Shay at Firehouse 51 had changed her perspectives.

“Patrol en route to follow?” You asked as you headed over to the passenger seat, holding the door as you waited for a response.

“Of course. We’ll tail you as well, radio if there’s any trouble.” Hailey affirmed, her professionalism and desire to protect you battling as she watched the ambulance drive whilst she and Jay followed in their car.

Will was the one waiting when the patient was brought in.

“Watch it with this one, already took a paramedic hostage.” A patrolman explained, leaving Will to do a double-take at you and Rafferty as you walked the gurney into a treatment room.

“Which- Jay, what the hell happened?” Will exclaimed as he realised how shaken you looked.

“Culprit took Y/n hostage in the back of the ambo, had a damn scalpel to her neck. Rafferty managed to sneak in to the side and dose ‘em with a sedative, giving Y/n time to get out.” Jay explained, instantly following Will over to where you and Rafferty were. Hailey had already beaten them there.

“Are you okay? Did they catch your neck-” Will was cut off as you whacked his hand away.

“You are the third person to ask that and check my neck. I shoved their arm away before I launched myself out of the ambo. No mark. I’m fine, just shaken.” You explained, fiddling with the zipper of your ambo jacket before catching Hailey’s eye.

Your head tilt at her raised eyebrow answered her question.

You wanted to see her after your shift.

You and Rafferty had left to go back on call by the time that Will, Jay and Hailey were talking.

“I don’t know how she does it. Being a paramedic. Are paramedics supposed to be taken hostage, is that part of the job description?” Will grumbled to Jay who sighed.

“Apparently in Chicago it is. This isn’t the first time a paramedic has been taken hostage, remember?” Jay replied, frowning as he noticed how Hailey had folded her arms, staring at the ED exit you’d left through.

“Hailey, you okay?”

“I will be later... when I know she’s okay.” Hailey admitted, gaining a hand on the shoulder from Jay as he nodded.

Would you be willing to post your ranking of Chicago Fire medics and why?

So again this is with my caveat of watching Fire but not really paying too close attention. So I for sure could be missing stuff. Also I’m not suspending disbelief here or making allowances ‘for the sake of drama.’ So the list, from best to worst, and in my opinion, is under the cut

Rafferty: She could compartmentalize. While she was terse with Shay for shitty reasons, that didn’t affect the actual job. In the field, on a call she was good. If I remember correctly she, like Emily, was also at one point a doctor (resident?) and left, but she didn’t seem to be using being a paramedic as a stepping stone or back up. She also didn’t seem to use her unqualified/unlicensed doctor training in the field to perform procedures we’re not allowed to do.

Violet/Mills: A tie here. Mills always stepped up to the plate when he had to serve as a medic. Even through he wanted back on squad, he didn’t seem to let that get in the way, he seemed genuinely happy that being a medic let him stay at 51, so by and large he put that work. Violet seems very steady, haven’t really seen any red flags from her yet but we’ll see. With both I am confused about them being PICs but for opposite reasons. I don’t get why Mills was PIC when he and Gabby swapped, he might have had his EQ but I’m pretty sure Sylvie had years of being a medic elsewhere. Same with Violet, she was established as PIC I don’t get how she could have become one so fast not why she’d take a demotion.

Jimmy: Again like Mills he just seemed happy to still be at 51 (again until the writing off of his character) and did the work he was told to do.

Shay: Same as Rafferty, she was actually shown as being very capable in the field. Compartmentalized, not afraid of offering a different opinion but still respecting command, and really didn’t let the interpersonal screw her up in the field. At the house, on an empty rig sure, outside of work yes, but that doesn’t really matter. On the job, doing the job she was fine. You don’t have to be friends, and can even be frosty with the people you work with. It makes the time go by slower, but ultimately doesn’t really matter. The only reason she‘s not ranked second, is because of slipping Kelly drugs in season 1.

Gabby/Sylvie: Another tie. Neither one could/can compartmentalize. They both let interpersonal interfere with the job to varying degrees. Including with each other. Gabby also had the doctor thing for a bit in early seasons, and constantly crossed the line. While Sylvie doesn’t really do that in the same way, there have been calls she’s made that IRl are WTF. Both let their feelings distract them in the field, and sus calls have resulted in that. If I absolutely had to pick between the I would rank Sylvie higher, but only very narrowly so.

Emily: She never should have been a medic. It’s not like being doctor-lite and that’s how she treated it. And they’re different. They’re very different. They require a different skill set and different mentality. She had a air of superiority because of her education, and just no. I would have dinged her so quick. Medics have procedures, for a reason. A lot of what she did, that got praise for, is so fucking dangerous. Just I can’t with her. I really can’t.

Chili: I am sympathetic to what she was going through, but that only goes so far. She drank on the job. She tried to blame all her mistakes, her dangerous mistakes, on others, always. Just no. Again sympathetic to what she was going through, but she was given so many chances to correct the course. I just have no respect for her whatsoever.

I’m not ranking Mackey, because I just don’t think we saw her enough. Same with the two floaters Doom and Gloom and Mr Pep. Though if I recall correctly Mr Pep actually came into his own pretty well.

Chicago Fire Season 2 Ep. 14 "Virgin Skin"

Severide searches for Katie, who was kidnapped by thugs who attacked him during the blackout. He asks the police for help. Casey bleeds in his ear and the doctor says it could end his career. Firehouse 51 gets a call about someone crushing a hand on a conveyor belt. Severide takes matters into his own hands to find Katie. Rafferty is sued by a victim who says his religious beliefs stop her from saving his life. Boden breaks up with Donna because he doesn't want his past mistakes to ruin his new relationship. Shay gets a tip from two hockey players. The men repay a young victim who supported them when 51 was nearly closed down.

Severide finds Keeler, the main suspect in Katie's kidnapping, outside District 21. Detective Lindsay tries to calm him down by saying they've bugged Keeler. But Severide doesn't care and goes to two contacts to find out where Katie is.

He beats one guy and finds the address to a warehouse. He and Lindsay find Katie beaten, bruised and terrified but alive. Katie says she saw Keeler's face when he was raping her.

Dawson fails to finish the obstacle course in time to graduate. She is even more frustrated at her fellow trainee's success. Jones easily passes the trials. When the final trial arrives, Dawson pushes herself hard but hurts her ankle and finishes late. She fails.

But Dawson isn't the only one being tested. Casey's medical exam is bad. The doctor says that any more injuries to his broken skull could be dangerous. This makes him tell Dawson the truth. She forgives him and he promises to tell her the truth.

With tensions high at the fire station over Katie's abduction, Boden agrees to a welcome dinner with Donna and some of her friends. His past comes up and he talks about his two divorces and estranged stepson, Jimmy. This makes him think about his relationships. Boden and Donna break up. She understands, but is sad.

After saving a man's life, the man complains. Rafferty is suspended. The two EMTs, who used to be enemies, share a tender moment. They've come a long way. But there's a good thing about Rafferty leaving suddenly - she suggests Dawson as her replacement.

Later, Lindsay contacts Severide to help her and Antonio arrest Keeler. Severide joins Katie in the hospital after Keeler's capture. He apologizes to her mother, who apologizes to him. He then reveals the news. Kelly goes to see Katie and she'll be discharged the next day. She tells him she's moving to Colorado. Severide agrees it's best for her to leave after the kidnapping. The siblings share a happy moment.

After Katie is rescued, Dawson fails her test and Boden breaks up with Donna, everyone at 51 is happy about the new library for Nathan, the kid who helped raise money for the firehouse during its near-closure. The firefighters celebrate at Molly's, where Shay auctions off Blackhawks tickets from Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith.

Herrmann announces he passed the lieutenant's test. But the good news turns bad for Dawson when Jones introduces herself as the new candidate on Truck 81. She's joining the firehouse.

Severide is missing from all this. He was called to District 21 by Lindsay. Keeler has contacts in high places and the police have to let him go. Severide is furious, but Lindsay can't do anything.

I think I'll stop watching chicago fire after season 3. Before I started this tv series I knew that Leslie Shay will eventually die I just didn't know that I'm gonna love her so much. Her character is one of the best I've ever come to know. I mean a lesbian paramedic who has a vibrant energy and a brighter-than-the-sun smile. The way she backed up and called out Severide, the way she supported Dawson in her journey for being a firefighter, or that time where she helped out with Molly's, the way she interacts with Casey, Mouch, Cruz, Hermann and Otis and the way she showed who she really is with Rafferty. What's not to love? So I may not finish this show but I know that Leslie Elizabeth Shay will always be Kelly Severide's home and NO ONE CAN CHANGE THAT. They also shouldn't stop mentioning her name. I mean they killed her off because of her "impact" in their lives right? So why stopped remembering her? Or mentioning her goofiness or the little things she used to do. Her character deserve better. Just sayin'.

Also, in this scene, I really wish they let Severide look and smile at Shay's picture. Hello, THAT'S HIS ORIGINAL GIRL! ugh.

If they ever decided to kill him off, there should be a scene where they meet again and Severide be like: "Thank you for waiting for me." Then Shay's answer will be: "Always"

"That we, uh.. that we promise to be there for each other. Always. No matter what."

"Always."
