Read the full article

DON’T LOOK AWAY
Don’t blink,
don’t let the scene
reset behind tired eyes,
a change in location
brought about by
a black screen:
the ultimate transition.
Everything in the world is new again;
we are seeing old things with fresh eyes,
young and un-understanding,
marveling at the decay,
at the process of life
eating itself, one bite
of its tail at a time.
Our brains have been on autopilot,
living in the liminal space of inattention
and awakening after seven years
to try to make sense
of a suddenly foreign home—
coming out of the hill, blinking,
still holding the man
pulled down from the last horse,
fingers still pricked from pulling the roses.
Can we lie? Are our tongues our own?
What will shift in our arms this time?
The scene resets behind tired eyes—
we tarried too long.
