have you ever met the boss? haruto i think his name is?
what do you know about him? :o
Tumblr media
"You should be careful referring to him in such casual terms. Apparently, he doesn't much like that.
I haven't met the kumicho myself, no. I think very few actually have. He's apparently pretty reclusive, and it's really only his highest ranking members that get to speak with him. I think the highest on the ladder I've spoken with was the shateigashira of this area. Oh, and I've seen the wakagashira in passing, and I did a case for him, but we've never actually interacted."

// Autism took over for a minute so here's a thing about the internal ranking of Rocket
Hi. Sooo, while it won't match up 100%, for both my own creative freedom and also because I definitely do not understand it all the way, I based this mostly off of the ranking within the Yakuza. Since. Y'know. Yeahhh. This post is mostly a simple-ish thing for me to explain what exactly it is that the Executives DO and also sort of how the other ranks function. And also a bit of rambling about Archer and Ariana. oops
Everything I got about the ACTUAL Yakuza ranking is from this article, since it was the easiest one for me to understand. Don't know if it's totally accurate, but. Oh well. rgfohjuki
Japanese Yakuza Ranks: Names Of Yakuza Member Ranks In Order (history18.com)
Tumblr media
Going into more detail under the cut!
The boss, or the Oyabun, is obviously Giovanni. Don't feel the need to explain that one a whole lot. Giovanni runs the whole operation. He makes the decisions. He's at the top. He's the one making money.
Archer and Ariana both fit the Saiko-Komon and Wakagashira roles, but for the most part I think it would sit like this, with Ariana as Saiko-Komon, and Archer as Wakagashira.
Archer deals with many of the business aspects, especially after Giovanni left. Before that, however, he fit the role of Wakagashira more. He was, forgive the pun, Giovanni's dog. He went everywhere that Giovanni did. His main purpose is to organize the different operations of Rocket, especially higher-risk ones. He also manages the business and financial side of Rocket, though he shares those responsibilities with Ariana.
Ariana functions as a public face of sorts. While Archer deals with most of the technical aspects of the different businesses that run under Rocket, Ariana is the one who forms the relationships. The different science branches of Rocket are under her jurisdiction as well.
Petrel and Proton both fit the Shateigashira. They're the ones in charge of the different admins and grunts. While Archer organizes the missions, they're in charge of actually getting it done.
Proton is in charge of Security, and much of the bloodier side of the fieldwork. If there's a dispatch mission, he'll be the one running it. Proton's personal team is the Inquisition. Their purpose within Rocket is, very basically, to punish and/or acquire information. They are feared internally for being ruthless, and having very little internal repercussions for their actions. The worst of Rocket usually end up as Inquisitors, or other people under Proton's management.
Petrel runs Rocket's medical services, and the stealth side of fieldwork. He gets the missions that require infiltration. If a Rocket manages to get inside the police system, Petrel put them there. When he's at headquarters, he's usually either organizing teams or running the infirmary. Typically, the only time he ever actually performs medical services is if it's a high-ranking member.
The admins of Rocket form the Kyodai and Shatei. High-Ranking admins organize teams of low-ranking admins, who are in charge of their own teams of grunts. Each reports to the next, who then report to either Proton or Petrel. These are the people who make up the majority of Rocket.
In terms of the Executives, there isn't an official difference in rank between the white uniforms and the black. That only signifies where they work. Archer and Ariana work in business and organization. Petrel and Proton work in the field. That being said, there's an informal hierarchy amongst the Executives. Street smarts Vs. Book smarts. It doesn't help that Archer and Ariana are/were the ones with direct relationships to Giovanni. Petrel and Proton report to Archer, as he's the one making decisions over which missions are important or not.
For a while after Giovanni disappears, there is very much a power struggle between Archer and Ariana. They both fight to hold Giovanni's position. This is a continuation of the more personal struggle they had between each other, though that was more one-sided. Archer was very jealous of Ariana's relationship with Giovanni. The two were married, and while Giovanni wasn't necessarily the most loyal husband (Cough cough he cheats on Ari with Archer. She is well aware of this) the precedent remained, and he doesn't like it. Ariana does not have any particular problem with Archer, though she doesn't like how Giovanni takes advantage of him. There are several times that she tries to subtly warn him away from Giovanni. Archer willfully ignores this, and instead decides that her going up to him and saying "Giovanni is using you" is her trying to be sneaky and get him off her man, since CLEARLY she's jealous that her husband prefers his company to hers.
Eventually he figures out that, no, Giovanni did NOT in fact care about him more, and the tension between Archer and Ariana settles.

The Assassin - Pt 2
Previous
For the rest of the day, he couldn't get Keiko Luciano out of his mind. He ended up going for a run to distract himself. He just returned to his loft when he gets a call from an Unknown number, "Russo."
Tumblr media
"It's Keiko." Speak of the Devil. "You sound out of breath. Were you in the middle of getting to know your hand better?" Billy can hear a smile in her voice.
"I just got back from a run. I'm about to take a shower."
"Perfect, let's video chat!"
"Maybe another time," she makes him smile. "How'd you get my number?"
"Bill Russo. You paid with a company card at my club. Your people at ANVIL forwarded my call. It's not rocket science."
"Why are you calling? To change plans? Or are you canceling?" Bill's voice turn low and velvety, "Darlin' you know my heart can't handle that." There's silence from Keiko's end. Quietly, "Wait…are you canceling?"
"I need to change the location & time. Saka Mai at 7? Lower East side, on Ludlow."
"I thought you didn't want to do dinner? Something about it being too much of a committment." Bill laughs, "Our relationship seems to be progressing fast. Should I propose? Should I get a ring?"
She practically purrs, "You're free to gift me diamonds. I won't stop you." She clears her throat, "Look, are you available tomorrow night or not?"
"I'd meet you at 5 in the morning if you asked me to."
Sighs, "Men are always willing to jump through hoops for sex. If you think i'm going to spread my legs because you're paying for a plate of food, then you're mistaken."
"Who said I was paying?" He hears her laugh. "Look, Keiko, I'm not trying to have sex with you. Its just dinner. I promise."
"Fine. See you at seven. And Bill…"
"I know. I won't be late."
*****
Bill gets to the restaurant 5 minutes to 7p. It's a nice place. It's the first time he's been here. Looking around there are a lot of men in black suits, tattoos...missing fingertips. He did a background check on Keiko. She's the child of two very prominent crime families. Her grandfather was a 2nd Lieutenant "shateigashira" with Inagawa-Kai. The first Yakuza family to move their business outside of Japan. Her father is a Capo with the Genovese, the largest Family in the Italian Mafia. Now, she brought him into a sushi bar filled with gangsters.
He sees her talking to a man across the room, her hand resting on his arm. She's in a deep maroon dress and matching heels. Her dark hair pulled up into a tight bun, showcasing her elegant neck that Bill's already thinking about kissing.
He makes his way towards her, "You're on time. This is my friend, Tanner, he owns the restaurant."
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Russo," escorting them to their table. Catching the attention of a waiter, "You look like a whiskey man. Timothy, bring this table a bottle of Yamazaki 18. Compliments of the house. A friend of Keiko's is a friend of mine. Now if you excuse me. I'm going to greet some acquaintances of mine. I hope you two enjoy dinner."
Bill hold her seat out for her, "You look beautiful tonight."
"Thank you, I'm happy to please," smiling up at him.
"That makes the 2 of us," winking. "See, we already have one thing in common. You seem to have a lot of connections."
"It's all about connections. You should know…being a business man and all." Tanner walks by with his aquaintences who nod at Keiko, which she in turn, gives them a sweet smile.
"Who are those 2 men?" Bill eyeing them up.
"Why? Jealous?" She arches an eyebrow at him and picks up her menu.
"Maybe," cringing at the surliness he hears in his voice.
Putting her menu down & leaning forward, "They are Hector & Marco Ramirez. They're brothers. They belong to the Yamauchi-gumi. Yakuza loves this place."
Three heavy-set men walk into the restaurant & sit at the bar. Your senses go on alert &. Billy's too damn observant, "Don't tell me you know them too."
"No," focusing on Billy.
"What exactly is it that you do for a living? I know you own the 11:11 Club. I have a feeling you're involved in other endeavors."
The waiter came back with the Whiskey. "Thank you, Timothy." A look passes between Keiko and the waiter, or is Bill just reading into things because he's actually kind of jealous. She proceeds to pour a tumbler for Billy. "Have you tried Japanese Whiskey? It's very good...so I'm told," placing the glass in front of him. "Do you think I'm a Yakuza princess? I'm a business woman."
"What kind of business?" taking a sip of whiskey.
"I own 11:11, a cafe & a funeral home."
Chokes on his whiskey, "A funeral home. Interesting choice."
Keiko smiles, "Are you ok??" Sighs, "Everyone dies. Why not profit from it? Besides, there's something fascinating about death. We spend our life rotting away until one day our bodies cease to function. Unless the person is murdered."
"That's an interesting take on things. You talk about murder like its nothing." Billy's interest is definitely piqued even more so now.
"We kill animals all the time. If people slaughter one another at the same rate we slaughter animals, we'd be extinct in 17 days. Human's are natural killers. Why is taking a human life different from taking an animals."
"You cant be serious."
Tilts her head to look at him, "Would you walk out the door if I was?"
"No, I'd stay."
"Why?" She tilts her head the way a panther would right before they ripped out your throat.
"Because I'm pretty damn hungry." Calls the waiter over to order.
"All right, let's eat," giving Billy a bright smile.
*****
Dinner is easy & enjoyable. Billy Russo is so much more entertaining than she thought he'd be which was a very bad thing. Her head needed to stay in the game. She's here to do a job and needed an alibi.
"Why did you choose this restaurant?" he asked, taking a bite of the wagyu steak.
"What do you mean?" Enjoying her vegetable tempura.
"Most entrees have beef, pork or chicken. I thought you were giving up meat. You said it was unsatisfying."
Brushing her leg against his, "I like to tempt myself."
Lust surfaces in his eyes, "Are we talking about food or something else?
"I'm here with you, aren't I? She traces the inseam of his pants with her foot, halting at his crotch. The sole of her shoe pressed firmly against him. She feels him harden immediately. Carnal desire surges through her. He's resisting the urge to rub himself against her foot.
His hand grasps her ankle and move it away from him. Gritting his teeth, "I'm 3 seconds away from bending you over this table." It looks like he's forcing himself to continue eating. "But I want more."
"More?" arching an eyebrow. "I had no idea you were so kinky. We have another thing in common. What's your favorite kink? Mine is when people watch." Tracing the line of her cleavage, "Do you like to watch, Billy?"
He inhales a sharp breath & tries to get himself under control. She's killing him here. He licks his lips, "I do have a kink," giving Keiko a slow sexy grin, that she can't help but mirror. "Let me get inside that pretty little head of yours."
Slouching back in her chair with a pout, "I'd rather you bend me over." Billy laughs.

steel and shadows.
Tumblr media
Ah, the yakuza.
I love going into talks about NPCs, something about them makes me so happy, especially when others interact with them. It gives me an excuse to let their differing personalities shine and allows me to go in-depth about them. The Takahashi clan is an older samurai clan that has had influence in the underworld of society and also within the bakufu as protector of the people. It is common to find one of their own among the official ranks, however, they do not hold sway in actual politics. The Yatakura clan, consisting of skilled shadows ( ninjas ) that have been more prominent in Yanxia, assimilated with them several years ago, strengthening their ability to gather intel and work incognito without drawing too much attention to themselves.
This merge between the two has been beneficial to the oyabun at the top of the clan, Fusanosuke Takahashi, who rose to take the reins of the clan and has been one of the more successful of the beneficiaries, not only in keeping illicit activities away from the public eye, but in forming ties with the Mitsurugi clan, who have utilized the services of the Takahashi clan in the past for certain activities that should be performed discreetly and away from the attention of the military.
The oyabun, Fusanosuke, wants to keep the bōryokudan very conservative. He works with honor and always admires upholding traditions. They do not partake in harming children and women. Any of his members found doing so are dealt with immediately, often striking deals with the otherworldly to accomplish this and leave very little evidence to trail back to them.
The clan has two principal lieutenants, the wakagashira and the shateigashira. Hayate and Shigure, siblings. Another pair of siblings that make up the kyodai are the roegadyns Hiroshi and Saito. Hayate, however, plays major a role in how Kikyo ended up with the yakuza.
Tumblr media
Though it may appear he wished to help her out of sympathy for the young woman, he immediately began to think how this otherwordly energy came to be, left she was a spirit herself. Assuming she was of the latter, he would offer shelter and comforts to the maiden, believing that keeping her close, as the vessel of death, would grant them a boon.
..However, such would come with trials and tribulations, for Kikyo was not one who could so easily become comfortable in the presence of men.
A tale for a different time..

WORLD-BUILDING : GENSHIN IMPACT YAKUZA AU
Tumblr media
FATUI-GUMI
The most powerful organized crime syndicate across Teyvat.
Ruled by the one called “Tsaritsa”.
TERMS AND TERMINOLOGIES :
Kumi - “family”. Extension used to syndicate divisions to indicate togetherness.
Gumi - same as “kumi” but exclusively for darker themes.
Kumicho -  term used to address the highest ranking boss of the Yakuza. Oversees the whole syndicate.
Hime - Not a general term in the Yakuza. Kumicho’s daughter. In this GI universe, the mysterious princess of the Fatui.
Oyabun -  title used for the little bosses of the kumi (divisions) within the Yakuza.
Saiko-komon -  the right hand of the Oyabun when it comes to administration of the group. They oversee everything from business and finance, legal matters, public relations and such.
Komon -  helps the Saiko-komon with decision-making.
Shingiin -  law advisor who takes care of legal matters—from members being incarcerated to operations done on quasi-legal areas.
Kaikei -  the accountant or the bookkeeper who keeps the records of all transactions and administrative documents of the group.
Hisho -  oversees arranging of appointments, meetings and deals of the family.
The “Wakagashira” is the first lieutenant of the oyabun, acting directly upon his orders. Together with the “Shateigashira” or the second lieutenant, they see to it that the orders from the higher-ups are disseminated up to the lowest of the hierarchy and into the streets. To ensure that this happens, the Wakagashira appoints a “Fuku-honbucho” or a leader among the “Kyodai” or big brothers—who then act as enforcers who order and take to the streets as footmen along with their little brothers or “Shatei”.
TRADITION
Yubitsume
As a form of punishment for when a member does something that brought shame and dishonor to the family (eg. failing missions and deals, letting kin die without doing anything, acting out without permission), the Yakuza has been known to do Yubitsume or “finger-cutting”. This ritual is overseen by the Oyabun—or even the Kumicho if an Oyabun (in this case, referring to the head of kai or kumi) committed shameful acts.
Succession of Powers
Once the Kumicho steps down, the eldest among the Oyabun will take over unless stated otherwise. In cases wherein a member of the actual family is within the candidates, they are given priority in consideration above others.
Sakazuki
A sake-exchanging ceremony done to welcome new recruits into the Yakuza. Typically, it is done between an oyabun, or the kumicho, and the new recruit, in which the oyabun drinks sake from a cup which they will offer to the recruit afterwards. The recruit will then finish the drink and keep the cup as a sign of loyalty. It may be done to signify succession of powers (atomesouzuku), welcoming from a higher up (oyakosakazuki) and welcoming from one of the lower members (kyodaisakazuki). The welcoming ceremony ends with a trip to the bathhouse, where the tattooed body of the yakuza members are shown as sign of welcoming.
PREMISE OF THE STORY
THE CHARACTERS
Aether is the First Harbinger among the Oyabun. He is the next in line once the Tsaritsa steps down. Also known as the "Jester", or "Pedrelino" in the main house. He manages the Mondstadt Branch Family of the Fatui-gumi.
Lumine, on the other hand, is not an official member of the Fatui-gumi-- rather, she is a member of the main house by nature of her relation to the head of the family. Called by the Harbingers as "Hime" or "Princess". Nobody outside them knows what she looks like but most are aware of her existence. Regardless, she has been trained in physical combat and the nature of their world from the very young age of 7, together with her twin brother.
Ajax, also known as "Tartaglia" among his colleagues, is the boss of Liyue-kumi. He stands to be the youngest among the Oyabun, sans Aether-- but his height would beg to differ. Three years the senior of the Tsaritsa's twins. Weapons' master at age 15 and considered to be one of the most dangerous among the Fatui. Most Harbingers do not like him.
Tsaritsa, commonly addressed as Kumicho, is the main leader of all of Fatui-gumi. Has odd connections to the ruling leaders of Teyvat including the Qixing, Knights of Favonius, Bakufu etc. Seen as cold but is actually a doting mother to her heirs-- but only within the confines of the main house.
The "admin" of the main house-- consisting of La Signora and two others, takes care of compiling all administrative works regarding the syndicate.
PLOT
Tartaglia X Lumine route.
Tartaglia, upon being assigned as the youngest Harbinger at 14 years old, met the "princess" of the Fatui-gumi as his first trial-- her being his sparring partner. Lumine wipes the floor with him and he became smitten since then.
Lumine would often do undercover missions for her mother or would offer to resolve a few issues she notices via her keen observation. Usually, Tartaglia is the receiving end of this "help" as he could be rash and carefree at times.

𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 — 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐢𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐮𝐬.
DISCLAIMER: Pulling inspiration from some of the original concepts for XV, I’ve incorporated elements of the Yakuza into this post. For the ease of understanding, I’ll be using the Japanese terms to explain the roles and hierarchy of Aulea’s family alongside the Lucis Caelums. For writing partners, you are by no means obligated to follow what is laid out in this post, this is just for my own worldbuilding and trying to flesh out Aulea as a character. If you’d like to forego any of this information in our interactions, please don’t hesitate to let me know and we can ignore this.
Noble households of Insomnia followed a strict hierarchy and code of conduct equivalent to the Japanese Yakuza. Families were expected to uphold the Code of Jingi, where loyalty and respect are a way of life. As the head of the Lucis Caelums and the sovereign of Lucis, King Mors would have filled the role of the boss ( oyabun ). Each head of these noble houses served on the royal Council in some way, fulfilling a role in the Yakuza hierarchy. For instance, the head of the Amicitia house, Leonius Amicitia, served as Mors’ personal Shield and was his shateigashira ( first lieutenant ) of which his son, Clarus, would then become the Shield during the reign of Regis, and so on. Much was the same for Aulea’s family, whose household had a strong relationship with the Lucis Caelums dating back generations.
The Deiphobus house was headed by Magnus Deiphobus, and had a long-standing history of serving the royal family as military strategists. Magnus was no different, serving as King Mors’ strategist and wakagashira ( second lieutenant ) for much of his reign. Known for their military knowledge and prowess on the battlefield, heads of the Deiphobus household had been assigned the duty of making known criminals ‘disappear’. As such the Deiphobus family were a force to be reckoned with and commanded the respect of their fellow noble houses almost to the level of the Lucis Caelums.
Magnus and his wife, Cressida, brought two children into the world. In M.E. 700, a son was born whom they named Adrianus. This was cause for much celebration, as the birth of a son meant not only that the line of Deiphobus would continue, but that Magnus would have someone to take his place as the King’s strategist upon his passing. Seven years later, Aulea was born on September 2nd, M.E. 707. As the second-born and only daughter of the family, Aulea was not given the same expectations as Adrianus. Because the Yakuza hierarchy dictated that, for a large part, only men could hold positions, Aulea’s pursuits were focused elsewhere. She learned several musical instruments ( including piano and violin ) and attended, with several other children from similar noble houses, a private academy in the northern part of Insomnia for the duration of her education.
As women, Aulea and Cressida remained mostly outside the realm of activities that Magnus and other men of noble houses got into, but they were not completely detached from it. Tragedy struck the family when Aulea was twelve years old—Adrianus was killed in a car accident. He was nineteen at the time of his death. News of the death spread quickly, and amidst the grief and turmoil the family experienced, it was clear that things were going to change for Aulea. Now the only child, and the only hope to secure a continued future for the Deiphobus household, it was imperative that Aulea make good connections with other families within the Yakuza.
As such, in the following years Aulea began attending parties and events that would hopefully cultivate meaningful and beneficial relationships for her future. One such relationship was with the Crown Prince, Regis Lucis Caelum. Though they had known each other their whole lives, having been childhood friends, Aulea had been reluctant to pursue his attentions for anything other than friendship, despite her mother’s urging. Still, Aulea remained close to Regis throughout their adolescence and he became a pillar of strength for her when, in M.E. 723, just four years after losing Adrianus, Magnus was killed on a routine check outside the Wall.
Now with only Cressida to fall back on, it was imperative that Aulea marry well if they were going to survive financially or maintain any political power in Insomnia. Aulea’s saving grace came in the form of Regis when he asked her on a date a year after Magnus passed away. The two had a long courtship, interrupted by the passing of King Mors and Regis coronation. However, the two would eventually marry in M.E. 732, when Aulea is twenty-five.

The Underworld
Tumblr media
Part 1/2:
Wading through the gleaming streetways of Kugane under it’s midnight rainfall, the hulking silhouette of Ryuki sluggishly wandering the streets of the Rakuza District nearest the Garlean Consulate. Even with the rainfall, the middle-aged Auri opted for a black Yanxian haori, hakama and zori. He was poised in his deceptive hunch, bamboo cane in hand. His head was kept down, but his focus remained forward, golden irises piercing the night from between salt and pepper hair.
The typical crowd to be expected in the Rakuza District was present, albeit in semi-smaller quantities on account of the hour. Merchant shacks and carts had closed for the evening with staff retired to the safety of their homes. Men loitered around, a majority dressed in a black kimono or haori, with little skin to be shown off. Raen Auri, Roegadyn, and Hyur were present in the masses, exchanging words in Hingan. These men likewise populated the less-visible alleyways of the Rakuza District area, performing the occasional swapping of unseen materials - in many cases, some variation of a drug. Despite the vacancy of the merchant stalls and closed teahouses or restaurants, a few establishments continued to operate, nestled in the rear alleyways, ranging from sexually illicit stores to karaoke lounges and bars. The alleyways and surrounding area were kept impeccably clean and unviolated with litter or property defacing.
As Ryuki neared the strip of the Rakuza District nearest the Garlean Consulate, he halted at the steps of a specific karaoke lounge - in contrast to the few others that sat in the more hidden reaches, this lounge made no effort to keep out of sight. The light from within held a reddish hue, illuminating the exterior with a soft crimson glow. A man stood idly to one side of the main entrance, dressed in a floor-length black and grey yukata, a mess of chocolate hair covering his forehead. A katana was boldly sheathed at a hip, and despite the occasional patrol units of the Sekiseigumi, this potentially criminal offense was spared not more than a passing glance by roaming guards before turning to continue along their route. He casted a side-long glance towards Ryuki as he approached, holding it for a moment before dipping into a respectful bow. He turned his attention towards the streets when this had concluded.
Ryuki slowly returned the gesture, stepping into the karaoke lounge with careful footsteps. The interior of the entrance hall was exquisite, adorned with high quality Hingan sake and whiskey to break the bank of a typical visitor. Gorgeous black leather couches and seats sat neatly in the general seating area, fine porcelain wares studded in imperial-quality jade standing on display on tabletops nearby. Authentic works of Hingan and Doman art were hung along the walls, varying in styles from ukiyo-e to Yanxian landscape painting. Private karaoke rooms were layered along hallways branching from either side of the entrance hall, with all listed as ‘Unoccupied’ in Hingan kanji except for one karaoke room at a hallway end listed as ‘In Use’. Despite the lack of complete lack of patronage in the hallway or anywhere in sight, the faint scent of cigar smoke sat in the air.
A brawny Sea Wolf Roegadyn silently tended to the bar area, organizing glasses and sanitizing what was in reach. He boasted a full suit and tie, along with polished dress shoes and a slicked back head of navy blue hair. As Ryuki made his presence known, the Roegadyn spoke up in curt Hingan, halting his cleaning to bow in the expected Eastern fashion. <”A familiar face. Good evening. How may I assist you this evening? Might I start you off with something to drink, or would you like to rent out a room?”>
Ryuki, with his haori and hakama partially plastered down by rainwater, dipped at the waist in turn. Replying in Hingan. <”Good evening. I respectfully decline your offer. I have business with yours’.”> Maintaining an even eye contact, he made a mental note of the shotgun in the Roegadyn’s holster.
Despite the vague explanation for his arrival, the Roegadyn knitted his brows, gesturing towards one end of a hallway with an open palm. <”...I am of the assumption you understand where to go. Thank you for stopping by, Kotaro-sama.”> With a parting bow, he slowly pivoted on a heel, returning to his mindless cleaning.
The Auri man returned the gesture graciously, turning his attention towards the hallway to his left. Leading with his bamboo cane, he made his way for the peak end of the hallway where the private room marked ‘In Use’ sat. He stood before the door a moment before twisting the knob, pushing the door open and revealing a downward staircase. What began as a faint trace of smoke in the main entrance area amplified in intensity as Ryuki began his descent. Upon arrival at the base of the staircase and with further travel down another hallway, he peered up, greeted with the hanging scroll that marked the entrance of a place unknown to the masses too cowardly or blissfully unaware. Upon the scroll laid a bold daimon.
The daimon of the Takaneda-gumi.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 2/2:
Stepping into the space with a gentle opening of the entrance door, Ryuki stood still with his hunch persisting. The interior space was moderately lit with Hingan lanterns along the wall, alongside various Hannya masks that seemed prepared to come alive at a moment’s notice. As was the case in the upstairs area, the space was adorned with priceless Eastern paintings, velvet crimson couches and traditional cushions and randomly placed jade statues of Eastern serpents and terrifying creatures of legend. Expensive bottles of Eastern sake and whiskey littered the tables. Of all the aspects to note, one stood out in contrast to the Eastern-lounge feel to the space -- the small number of Imperial banners that hung, showcasing the widely denounced Garlean insignia. A group of men loitered about against the walls or on sofa cushions with bottles of sake in hand. Roegadyn, Raen Auri and Hyur. In contrast to the bartender above, these men boasted some variation of a sleeveless haori or no shirt at all. A myriad of Eastern irezumi inkings coated the skin of what was visible, leaving only the face unmarked. The majority chatted idly with one another in the native tongue. A smaller cluster were huddled at a table, lost in a game of Doman Mahjong with a handsome quantity of koban on the line. The scent of smoke hung thickly, sourced collectively from lit cigars. Everyone present looked occupied in some fashion, speaking in casual Hingan without a care in the world.
That is, until Ryuki made his presence known.
The Raen man advanced into this new space with a bow, greeted with the wary side-long looks of the majority present including the group involved in the game of Doman Mahjong. Seeming overall unperturbed by the attention and sudden silence, Ryuki hardly gave the group a passing glance as he made his way for another room across the way flanked by twin Eastern serpent statues and scrolls showcasing the Takaneda-gumi daimon.
<”I am obliged to understand what you are doing here, Kotaro-san.”> A gruff voice in Hingan called out.
Ryuki slowly peered over his shoulder, met with viciously scarred Midlander man. The accursed third ‘Garlean eye’ visible on his forehead with his mop of hair slicked back. <”My reasons for a visitation are of no concern to you, shateigashira.”> Ryuki grunted.
The Garlean Hyur canted his head. <”No concern to me? Is that the case? I speak to the man whose Clan nearly sent our operations spiraling into extinction following the liberation of your pitiful excuse for a home. You dare treat me as a chip on your shoulder, you Eorzean-sympathizing bastard?”>
<”That will be all. I pray to the Kami your oyabun will teach you respect. You are as a lawless babe, threatened by those that question your hotheaded temper. How many times must we have this interaction, Raekis-san?”> Ryuki mused, turning about half-way. <”I do understand this to be a common flaw present in the Garlean population.>”
The Garlean Hyur gnashed his teeth, reaching for a dagger nestled away. Halfway through his motion, under the squinted stare from Ryuki, he stopped. <”...We will have our day, Kotaro-san. You will find yourself a Clan patriarch, with no Clan.”> Casting a smoldering look at the door nearby, he pivoted on a heel to walk off. Likely to burn off steam.
Huffing, Ryuki approached the doorway flanked by Eastern serpents and hanging Takaneda-gumi scrolls. Remembering his mannerisms, he delivered a knock on the door.
<”Come in, Kotaro-San.”> A low voice responded with not a moment to spare before Ryuki could get a word out. Smooth and confident.
Adjusting his haori, Ryuki pensively pushed his way into the space at the voice’s invitation. The ‘office’ was akin to a more condensed version of the underground lounge he had arrived from, with the addition of an ornate fool’s portal mounted on the wall.
A monstrous Raen man sat comfortably on a leather chair to the rear of the office before a desk, kiseru pipe pinched between fingers. Even in comparison to Ryuki, who stood a few ilms taller than your average Auri when his hunch was lifted, this man-in-waiting was taller still by a few more ilms - almost abnormally so. He looked between 30 and 35 in age, rippling with scarred and irezumi inked muscle underneath a luxurious suit and tie. A hefty tail resembling that of a komodo dragon with a hazardous quantity of spines and jagged edges hung from the edge of his seat. A pair of cold, calculating irises bore viciously into Ryuki the moment he worked the door open, orange in color and glowing with a feral intensity. His skin was a tan caramel in shade and hair a short mess of black, spiked forward and partially shielding his right eye. A pair of ridged horns angled downward and forward from his skull like animal canines. He faced the door with legs crossed in the male fashion, tapping a pointed fingernail against his kiseru pipe as he suppressed the urge to greet his visitor with an unnerving, fanged smile.
<”I am truly blessed this evening. Please, take a seat, Kotaro-san.”> The man gestured to the Eastern cushion purposefully placed before his desk. A power play to all who dared request an meeting.
Eying the cushion, Ryuki shook his head, bowing slowly. <”With all due respect, I would wish to stand. Takaneda no Zenkoshi.>” He spoke the man’s full name, tapping his bamboo cane into the floor.
<”You would do well to remember your place in my pecking order, Kotaro-san.”> Zenkoshi remarked with a lift of his brow, extending a finger to gesture to his guest’s bamboo cane. <”An impressive act. However, I am a man of authenticity.”> He took a generous hit of his kiseru pipe. <”Would you not agree?”>
Ryuki knitted his brows, placing his cane against the doorway and rolling his shoulders back. He stood at his full height, hunch dropping entirely. The man stood with his hands at his side, eying the crime lord warily. <”I will stand. Do me harm, and suffer the unending wrath of my people, oyabun-”>
<”Your ‘people’?”> Zenkoshi interrupted, head tilted softly to the side. <”Your people are fewer with each passing month, Kotaro-san. Your numbers…”> He trailed off, taking another puff of his kiseru pipe. <”...I can name on a hand. As you can see, I have been a busy man.”> Opening a palm and gesturing to the hideout on the outside, smiling. <”My men live as nobility. I, myself, the emperor I was destined to be.”>
<”Even with your much beloved financial masters fractured and left to wander?”> Ryuki mused, arms folded across his torso. <”The Garlean Empire is in hopeless disrepair. Soldiers and civilians have fled. Squadrons disbanded. With your funding strained, what remains of your brutish band of traffickers and petty criminals?”>
Zenkoshi chuckled darkly behind his kiseru pipe, pinning it between his elongated fangs for the moment. Speaking up. “<Petty criminals...without koban, we are stripped of potential. Although.”> He released his pipe. <”Hard times create strong men. I am apologetic on your behalf. Your Clan’s mindless vigilante days have produced a storm beyond your understanding.”> The Raen continued on with a fine squint.
Staring at the oyabun with a stoic expression, Ryuki produced a gutteral hum from deep within his throat. <”Takaneda-sama, I implore you to move past this. I have repeatedly taken accountability for my Clan’s hotheaded actions. Dealing with your mettle is best left to the Sekiseigumi, easily enticed by koban as they are.”> He spoke with blatant distaste on his tongue.
<”You fail to witness the deep-seated effects of your ‘glory days’.”> He pointed his kiseru pipe at the older man. <”Wrenched operation after operation bled us dry of much of our support. Even much of the Empire has learned to fear the Shinobi, it would seem.”> Zenkoshi frowned. <”I do wonder. Who remains? The patriarch...and his heiress.”> Slowing his speech as he neared the end.
<”This conflict is between you and I.>” Ryuki spoke up without a moment to spare, jamming a finger at the ground between the two. <”You and I. This occurred on my watch.”>
Zenkoshi lifted a palm. <”Are you so lost beyond your years you forget the business in which I operate, old friend?”> Sneering. <”An heiress of so feared a Clan would fetch a fortune. Or, if this is not to your liking, she can remain here? How lonely this office can be...”> He mused, looking off to the side. <”If you wish to end this ‘bickering’ as you so graciously label it.”>
<”This is OUT of the question!”> Ryuki roared, slamming his palms atop the oyabun’s desk. <”You have enough koban and material wealth to last an eternity. I will hear NONE of this rabble.”> He hissed between clenched teeth, leaning forward to drill his reptilian gaze into the crime lord. <”I will bleed you in the dead of night.”>
In an impressive display of collectiveness, Zenkoshi remained in his seated position. He snapped his kiseru pipe with a sudden tensing up of the hand, irises ablaze with fury as his lips curled back to reveal his vicious set of teeth. <”I am going to recommend a soothing dip in the Onsen to ease that tension, Kotaro-san. Have a lovely evening. I will keep in touch.”> The man spoke with an unnatural coolness, veins popping along his neck.
Visibly shaking from a narrowly restrained anger, Ryuki lifted himself from his aggressive lean, watching the oyabun from start to finish. Wordless tension. With a pivot on his heel, he grabbed his bamboo cane, exiting the office and heading for the upstairs. Ignoring the clusters of Takaneda-gumi that had gathered following his sudden outburst.
Zenkoshi slowly laced his fingers atop his desk, leaning back with a hot exhale of breath.
<”In time.”>

When the Past Breathes: Part One
[Part Two, Part Three] [Writing music: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lo5KHvEBSE&feature=share  ] I missed the quiet of the past few months, the shards of tranquility taunting me with empty promises.  The careful planning and well detailed map of how to continue along the path of growth that Sugisekki-Kai traveled laid out the way to a fairly peaceful but productive life.  After years of covert war tangled with moments of deceptive calm the time I’ve spent in Kugane was healing.
It was easy to do the job that the Oyabun gave me, refreshing to work with things that weren’t a constant matter of life or death.  Practice in the morning is enjoyable now and my travels across the buildings of Kugane in the dark before dawn are dangerous in a way that I fully control. It’s a good life. At least I was not foolish enough to think that things would stay this way forever. We live with the curse of interesting times between the ever expanding world and the shadow of Garlemald over our heads.  It was only a matter of time before it caught up with me, though I wished it had been a little longer. Ling is dead, the fact still shocking to me.  She always seemed to be as enduring as stone to me, just starting to show her age.  I have more grey hair than she did, though upon attending to her body that secret was revealed.  She used hair dye to ensure that the silver strands didn’t betray her.  It’s an odd thing to find out now that she’s gone.  A strange deception to feel anger over, yet, somehow I do.  I think I’ll come to miss her with time, but for now duty looms larger than the hints of sorrow.  The timing could be worse, but it could be better. It has those who have been here since the beginning on edge.  Now both Wakagashira and Shateigashira are empty, stretching us thinner when we can ill afford it.  Not that we can show it, the new ones must not doubt our competence or they will vanish like fog under the morning sun.  It’s unfortunate, but Sugisekki-Kai will prevail, in that I have faith. Then this report from Doma, her spies still as active as they can be with the Garlean retreat.  They work with Ala Mihgo now, delving into the hidden knocks and crannies of the Empire best they can to dislodge bits of information like this.  It’s troubling, seeing old names and memories laid out bare before me.  Is it a coincidence this?  Finding the man I once worshiped in Eorzea just a few moons past then seeing him as a target before me?  That isn’t the life I live anymore, it’s not my duty.  I’m not watching his back and he is not watching mine.  Why it won’t leave me?  What I wanted once will never be, nor do I want it to be.  He has his life, I have mine, and I am content with that.  But, if this is his end and I do nothing, will I ever be able to wash the feeling of having his blood on my hands?  I would not, my heart would not allow me to be free of that guilt.  I don’t yearn, but I do still love, foolish as it is.  I will do what I can then.  He’ll remember when he gets it, but will he act? I don’t know, he’s always the suspicious type and I don’t know if he’ll trust me anymore.  I don’t know that I would trust in his shoes either. It will have to be enough.

Suzuki Gunz Crime Family - Chapter 7
Warnings:  mentions of cutting and blood
July 7, 1997
Minoru Suzuki leaned back in his chair, looking around the rag tag group that made up his family.   It was complete.   At one point it had felt like it would never be.  But once Zack had joined the family they had all felt a completeness.   Things had been hectic the last year since Zack had come aboard.  A never ending battle to establish dominance and reclaim lost turf.   The tide had finally turned and things were calm.  It was time to make things official.
“For the past two years we’ve built our name.  We’ve built our family.  Finally our family is complete.”  Minoru said, silence falling over the group.  “Each of us has had our own trials and tribulations to get to this point.  We all have scars.   But with the love and support of our brothers we will all heal.   We will become stronger.   Tonight is a night of ends and a night of beginnings.”
As each of the men had joined the family they had taken up residence in Minoru’s father’s estate.  Tonight was the end of that arrangement.  Minoru had a home built for himself.  Kanemaru and Taichi were moving into a condo together.   Despy, Taka and Zack were renting together.  Iizuka had a place of his own.  Lance and Davey had bought a home in downtown.  Money was flowing into the family, the men were in a position to be independent now, and it was only going to get better from here on out.   This home was going to be turned over to Minoru’s mother and sister.  They would live here in luxury.   But it would no longer be home to the Suzuki Gunz Crime Family.
“Tonight we welcome Taka, Zacky, Despy, Lance and Davey fully.”  Minoru said.  Placing the ceremonial goblet used two years ago to induct Taichi, Iizuka and Kanemaru on the table Minoru poured Takeda Katafune Daiginjo Sake into it.  Next the ceremonial knife was pulled from his interior pocket and held up by Minoru.
“I am Minoru Suzuki, IV, kumicho of the Suzuki Gunz Crime Family.  A family bonded by choice.  Not by blood.  With my blood I pledge my allegiance to each and every one of you. Bond before blood.”   Minoru sliced the knife, splitting open his scar from the first ceremony, watching crimson liquid drip into the cup.   Taking the towel offered by Kanemaru, Minoru tied off the wound before passing the cup and knife down to Taka.
“Taka Michinoku, I hereby name you shateigashira of the Suzuki Gunz.  You will serve alongside IIzuka to oversee safety and security of our family.   Do you accept this designation?” Minoru said.
Taka rose to his feet and knife in hand and pressing it to underside of his forearm.
“I, Taka Michinoku, pledge my life and my honor to the Suzuki Gunz Crime Family.  I will give my life to protect this family.  I accept my position as shateigashira with honor.  Bond before blood.”  Taka pledged, slicing open his arm and dripping his own blood into the cup.   Resuming his seat Taka bandaged his arm as he passed the knife and cup on to Desperado.
“El Desperado, I hereby name you fuko-honbucho of the Suzuki Gunz.  You will serve to oversee all branches of our family and the expansion of our turf.   Do you accept this designation?” Minoru said.
“I, Kyosuke Mikami, El Desperado, pledge my life and my honor to the Suzuki Gunz Crime Family.  Our family will prosper under my watch and become more powerful than any other.  I accept my position as fuko-honbucho.  Bond before blood.”  El Desperado cut deeply into his arm, dripping his own blood into the cup.
The cup and knife were passed on to Davey who held them reverently.
“Davey Smith, I hereby name you kyodai of the northern territories of Suzuki Gunz.  You are the protector of our family.  You are my eyes and ears.   Do you accept this designation?” Minoru said.
“I, Davey Smith, pledge my life and my honor to the Suzuki Gunz Crime Family.  No one will harm my family.  I accept my position as kyodai.  Bond before blood.”  Davey followed ceremony, letting his blood join that of his brothers in the cup before handing them off to Lance.
“Lance Archer, I hereby name you kyodai of the southern territories of Suzuki Gunz.  You are the protector of our family alongside Davey.  You are my eyes and ears.   Do you accept this designation?” Minoru said.
“I, Lance Archer, pledge my life and my honor to the Suzuki Gunz Crime Family.  No one will harm my family.  I accept my position as kyodai.  Bond before blood.”  Lance cut himself, watching his blood drip into the cup.
“Zack Sabre, Jr., I hereby name you shingliin of the Suzuki Gunz.  You will serve as the law advisor for our family.  You are our legal defense.   Do you accept this designation?” Minoru said.
“I, Zack Sabre, Jr, pledge my life and my honor to the Suzuki Gunz Crime Family.  I will bring pride to our family and defend it with honor.  I accept my position as shingliin.  Bond before blood.”  Zack mixed his blood with that of his brothers.  He was nervous and excited.  Having discussed his love of the law with Minoru on many occasions his designation was no surprise.  He was already enrolled in university and working steadily towards his law degree.  Zack was determined to be the best damn attorney ever seen in order to defend his makeshift family.
The cup was cycled back to Taichi, Kanemaru and Iizuka who each added their own blood before giving the cup to Minoru.
“We are a formidable group.  Nothing will get in our way.”  Minoru pronounced taking a swallow before passing it to Taichi and watching as each of the men swallowed from the cup.  When it reached him again Minoru turned to the cabinet behind him and pulled out five velvet jewelry boxes.  Moving around the table he placed on in front of each of the newest members.
“Taka, Zack, Davey, Lance and Desperado, welcome to our family.”  Minoru smiled with pride as he watched each of them place their rings on their fingers, smiling widely as they were now official.
