Sharp as a knife

Entrai nel bar tabacchi che era già buio. Avevo parcheggiato proprio lì davanti, ero stato fortunato. Il ragazzo cinese mi salutò da dietro la vetrina delle giocate Sisal, contraccambiai. Pensai di essere l’unico cliente ma mi sbagliavo: c’erano infatti degli inglesi che stavano mangiando spaghetti, era una famiglia seduta ad un tavolo che non aveva nemmeno la tovaglia, in un angolo del locale, nella penombra più assoluta. I loro cinque piatti di spaghetti al sugo fumavano nel tardo pomeriggio milanese, in quel bar tabacchi con cucina per turisti, a due passi da Centrale.

Avete mai visto come si comportano gli Ibis durante l’inverno, in campagna? Si riuniscono attorno ai fossati fumanti mentre intorno a loro è tutto congelato. Vedi il vapore salire da lontano, se c’è il sole sembrano dei calderoni bollenti, in un cuocere perpetuo. Il fumo corre verso il cielo limpido, in controluce, senza fermarsi mai. Gli Ibis stanno fermi, in gruppi di sei o sette in piedi, intorno ai fossi, come se quel vapore li riscaldasse, in qualche modo. Con i loro becchi neri adunchi, con la loro altezza che li fa apparire degli uccellacci deformi.

Gli Ibis non sono pittoreschi. Sembrano dei giovani calciatori inglesi che stanno per sbocciare. Sono irrefrenabili e spietati e, in breve tempo, fanno il vuoto intorno a loro. Cacciano, per esempio, disponendosi a cerchio, in mezzo a una lanca. Le loro lunghissime zampe permettono loro di arrivare molto lontani dalla riva. Camminano poi verso il centro del cerchio, beccando tutto ciò che possono beccare appena sotto al livello dell’acqua. Coi loro becchi adunchi ed affilati non lasciano scampo nemmeno ai pesci di medie dimensioni, nemmeno ai grossi rospi che popolano le paludi. In un ecosistema come quello del delta del Nilo, dal quale arrivano, questa tattica permette loro di sopravvivere. Hanno dei predatori che durante questo rituale di caccia possono cacciarli. Ma nelle risaie e nei fiumi del Nord Italia, causano un disequilibrio totale tra le specie autoctone e i loro rispettivi, millenari predatori.

Pensate a quanto possono essere incazzati gli Ibis, a trovarsi nel pieno dell’inverno, dopo essere nati sul delta del Nilo, attorno a una roggia fumante in cerca di qualcosa da mangiare. Nessuno ha detto loro di venirci, sino a qua, ma sono incazzati lo stesso. Come se si pentissero della loro scelta e fossero stati rapiti dal corso delle cose, dal clima, dal mondo che va avanti.

Cole Palmer è un giovane calciatore inglese come tanti, un giovane calciatore inglese che sta facendo il vuoto attorno a sé. Non conosce ostacoli, per ora, a centrocampo, come non conosce rivali, tra i suoi coetanei, a livello mentale. È un giovane tifoso del City, nato nella Greater Manchester che si è spostato a Londra, per cambiare aria e dimostrare che possa crescere e migliorare anche lontano da casa. Cole Palmer è tagliente, nelle sue azioni. In grado di non sbagliare mai quando tira i rigori e quando butta la palla nel corridoio davanti a sé, appena fuori dall’area avversaria, di piatto. La traiettoria sembra lenta, sospinta da un refolo d’aria. Ma è efficace, ed è questo ciò che importa. Arriva sino a dove serve, sino a che qualche allocco di attaccante la spinga in porta e trasformi in goal quel refolo.

“Cold”. Esulta così, quando segna, forse più per una trovata pubblicitaria che per una reale volontà. Facendo il gesto di stringersi e strofinarsi le braccia, con arroganza.

Erano le sei e mezza di un pomeriggio di dicembre e quegli inglesi mangiavano spaghetti in un bar tabacchi di Centrale. Come se nulla fosse, discutendo del loro viaggio, probabilmente. Mentre la gente prendeva i treni, partiva, arrivava, andava in stazione per aspettare o per accompagnare qualcuno, passandoci relativamente poco tempo.  Magari entrando in un bar o in un negozio per far passare il tempo perché in anticipo, o semplicemente per ripararsi dal freddo tipico che ci assale nelle grandi stazioni.

Come le cose che si dicono tra estranei, che quando non di capiscono, vengono lasciate lì. Come allo stadio, dove incontri persone che potrebbero vivere solo lì per quei pochi attimi e che non riesci ad immaginare in altri luoghi, a casa, al lavoro, Così sono le persone. Contrite nella folla.

��         He gave the pill to the girl and watched her taking it, glancing at her throat moving back and forth as the water was going down her body. Then he checked if she actually took them and not hiding them under the tongue or behind the teeth. Harvey smiled at the young girl and put a hand through her hair. “You may leave now” He watched her leave and then he went back to the book. There was only one more person who had to take her medicine and then he was free to work while the patients were in their free time.

          Glancing at the procedure again, he drank the little of coffee that he didn’t have time to finish in the morning. After drinking the last drop of coffee he unlocked the last drawer from where he took the pendulum he used to use at hypnotism. He smiled devilish when he put his hand on it, getting away the dust. Harvey heard footsteps on the hall and he knew that those footsteps were approaching his office.

          He put the pendulum on the desk and drew the curtains so that the room became darker; ensuring no one or nothing was going to interrupt his session. Then he turned and put the armchair almost in the middle of the room and after that he just waited for the door to open. When it finally did the devilish smile appeared again on his face. “You are late” – he said, partially turning his head to look at the girl.
