Looking For a Game-Changer Guide? Here Are the Top 5 Secrets Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know for 2025
Tumblr media
As we head into 2025, the world of entrepreneurship is shifting fast. With trends emerging overnight, the game is evolving, and if you're not tuned in, you could miss your shot at success. But don’t stress—whether you're launching your first venture or growing an empire, there are a few tried-and-true secrets that can help you stand out in the crowd. These strategies are what will separate those who thrive from those who just get by. Ready to level up? Let’s dive into the top 5 secrets every entrepreneur needs to know heading into the new year.
Customer Retention Is the New Acquisition
In the old days, growth meant always chasing new customers, but today, the real magic lies in keeping the ones you’ve already won over. Attracting repeat customers is far more valuable than constantly investing in finding new ones. Why? Because repeat buyers spend more, trust your brand, and become the best kind of advertisers—those who don’t cost you a penny. It’s about building a relationship that goes beyond the transaction. So, how do you pull it off? Personalized experiences, loyalty programs that feel authentic, and constant communication that doesn't feel forced. And the best part? Once you lock in that repeat customer base, it fuels word-of-mouth growth, which is priceless. The key takeaway: Focus on your customers' needs and desires to keep them coming back. Consistency, reliability, and making them feel like a VIP will set you apart in a competitive market. Don’t overlook the long-term value of those who already trust you.
Adaptability Is Your Superpower
Entrepreneurship is a game of constant change, and being able to roll with the punches is a skill you’ll need to hone. We’ve seen industries turn upside down in the blink of an eye, thanks to everything from tech advancements to global crises. The ones who survive—and thrive—are the entrepreneurs who pivot quickly without hesitation. Heading into 2025, it’s not just about having Plan A and Plan B anymore. It’s about constantly reassessing and adapting to new trends, markets, and customer behaviors. Whether it’s reshaping your product line, embracing new technology, or shifting to more sustainable business practices, the ability to adapt will keep you relevant. The world is unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare yourself. Embrace flexibility as part of your strategy, and when things change (because they will), you'll already be ahead of the curve.
Education Never Stops (Even for the Experts)
No matter how experienced you are, staying on top of your game means continually learning. Successful entrepreneurs know that growth is directly tied to education. And we’re not just talking about formal degrees or certifications. You need to dive into the latest trends, tech, and methods to stay sharp. In 2025, entrepreneurs need to think beyond traditional learning and embrace alternative ways of gaining knowledge. Whether it's taking a specialized course like an online illustration degree to hone a new skill, attending workshops, or learning directly from other industry leaders, education can take many forms. This section is where entrepreneurs need to stand out. The best businesses are often those founded on ideas and skills that evolve as the market changes. By staying educated, you’re opening up new opportunities for innovation, product expansion, and even personal growth. Don’t get left behind—invest in your brain as much as you invest in your business. Community Matters More Than Ever It’s no secret that building a strong community around your brand can drive growth and engagement, but as we move into 2025, this concept is about to hit another level. Entrepreneurs who can cultivate an authentic, engaged community will have a leg up over those who focus purely on profits. This doesn’t just mean creating a loyal following on social media. It’s about building a tribe of people who believe in your vision and are excited to support your journey. Whether you're starting small with local events or creating online spaces where your customers can connect with you and each other, fostering that sense of belonging will strengthen your brand. More than ever, people want to feel connected to the brands they support. They want to know the faces behind the logo, the mission behind the product, and how they’re contributing to something bigger. Entrepreneurs who can provide that will see their community evolve into a powerful engine of growth.
Prioritize Wellness—Yours and Your Team's
Burnout is real, and if there’s one thing entrepreneurs should know heading into 2025, it’s that health is wealth. You can’t run a successful business if you’re running on empty. As much as the hustle is glorified, maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life is crucial to long-term success. This extends not only to you but also to your team. A healthy entrepreneur is a productive one, and the same goes for employees. Fostering an environment where wellness is prioritized—whether through flexible hours, mental health support, or creating spaces that encourage downtime—will make your business stronger. This isn’t about being soft; it’s about being smart. The companies that prioritize wellness will retain top talent, increase productivity, and reduce turnover. At the end of the day, investing in your health and the well-being of your team isn’t just a feel-good move—it’s a solid business strategy.
Your 2025 Entrepreneur Playbook
As we dive into the new year, entrepreneurs who want to stay ahead need to focus on retaining customers, being adaptable, never stopping their education, building communities, and prioritizing wellness. These five secrets are the foundation of not just surviving but thriving in the evolving business landscape. Keep these insights close, and you’ll be well-prepared to crush it in 2025, no matter what challenges come your way. Image by Temel from Pixabay Read the full article

Crafting the Perfect Mylar Bag: A Guide to Custom Packaging That Pops
Tumblr media
Imagine packaging that does more than just wrap your product—it wows your customers. That’s the magic of custom Mylar bags. These versatile gems are not just containers but powerful branding tools that catapult your product to stardom on shelves and online. Ready to revolutionize your retail presence? Here's how to design Mylar bags that aren't just seen but remembered.
1. Embrace Your Brand's Heart and Soul
First things first: know thyself—your brand, that is. What’s your brand’s heartbeat? Who are you talking to? Your Mylar bag is a mini-billboard for your brand’s story. Ensure every color, shape, and line reflects your brand’s ethos and speaks directly to your target audience’s desires.
2. Think Beyond Beauty—Function Matters
Great design marries form and function. Mylar bags shine here, offering features like airtight seals, easy-tear notches, and see-through windows. Pin down what functionalities will elevate your customer’s experience—because great packaging not only looks good, it makes life easier.
3. Tailor Fit for a Glove-Like Finish
Nothing beats a perfectly fitting suit, right? The same goes for your product’s packaging. Work closely with your manufacturer to customize the size and shape of your Mylar bags. This precision not only cuts down on waste but also dials up the aesthetic appeal, making your product look bespoke and high-value.
4. Material Matters: Choose Wisely
The strength and feel of your Mylar bag depend on the right material choices. Thicker materials safeguard against environmental villains like moisture and odors, essential for maintaining freshness. Chat with your supplier about using the best materials that reflect your brand’s quality and sustainability commitments.
5. Color and Graphics: Make It Unforgettable
Colors can make or break customer interest. Use bold, eye-catching graphics and colors that align with your brand palette to make the first impression count. Investing in high-quality printing services will ensure your visuals are as sharp and durable as your product.
6. Don't Skimp on Typography
Never underestimate the power of clear, compelling typography. Choose fonts that embody your brand’s personality and ensure that crucial information (think: product names, ingredients, instructions) is not only readable but also engaging. Typography can subtly influence customer perceptions and decisions.
7. Go Green with Your Design
Today’s consumers are eco-savvy; they love brands that love the planet. Design your Mylar bags with the environment in mind—think recyclable materials or innovations in biodegradable technologies. Flaunting your green credentials can boost customer loyalty and appeal to a wider, eco-conscious audience.
8. Test, Tweak, Triumph
Before you go full throttle, test your design with real-world audiences. Use focus groups, social media feedback, or small-scale launches to see what resonates. This step can save you from costly missteps and fine-tune your packaging to perfection.
Conclusion
Designing your own Mylar bags is an art form that can dramatically elevate your brand’s market presence. With the right mix of style, substance, and sustainability, your custom Mylar packaging can become a game-changer in how customers see, choose, and cherish your products.
Are you ready to transform your products with packaging that packs a punch? Contact BRANDMYDISPO today, and let’s make your Mylar bag designs a reality that your customers can’t wait to pick up!

Tumblr media
In the era of social media and the constant spotlight on the glamorous lives of celebrities, every fashion choice becomes a headline, a trend, and a conversation starter. From red carpet premieres to casual strolls on the streets, celebrities serve as style icons, influencing trends and setting the tone for fashion enthusiasts worldwide. Let's delve into the captivating world of celebrity fashion news and explore the latest trends, iconic looks, and the dynamic intersection of fame and fashion.
Red Carpet Royalty: Iconic Looks and Memorable Moments
One of the most anticipated moments in the world of celebrity fashion is the red carpet event. Award shows, film premieres, and high-profile events serve as the runway for celebrities to showcase their sartorial prowess. From breathtaking gowns to sharp tailored suits, each red carpet appearance is meticulously curated, creating a visual spectacle for fans and fashion critics alike.
In recent celebrity fashion news, the red carpet has witnessed a resurgence of classic Hollywood glamour with a modern twist. Timeless silhouettes, intricate embellishments, and bold color choices have dominated the scene. Celebrities like Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, and Timothée Chalamet have been praised for their daring fashion choices, challenging traditional norms and injecting a fresh sense of creativity into formal wear.
Street Style Stars: Celebrities Off-Duty
Beyond the glitz and glamour of red carpet events, the streets serve as an equally influential stage for celebrity fashion. Paparazzi snapshots and Instagram candid shots capture celebrities in their everyday wear, offering fans a glimpse into their personal style and fashion preferences. Off-duty fashion has become a fascinating realm where celebrities express their individuality and experiment with diverse trends.
Recently, oversized silhouettes, vintage-inspired pieces, and gender-neutral fashion have been recurrent themes in celebrity street style. Influential figures like Harry Styles, Rihanna, and Billy Porter have embraced androgynous fashion, blurring the lines between traditional menswear and womenswear. This bold approach has sparked conversations about breaking free from societal fashion norms and embracing a more inclusive and fluid approach to style.
Celebrity Collaborations: Bridging Fashion and Fame
Celebrity fashion news often includes collaborations between stars and renowned fashion houses. These partnerships result in exclusive collections, limited-edition releases, and the convergence of celebrity influence with high-end design. Collaborations have become a powerful avenue for celebrities to express their creativity and connect with fans on a deeper level.
A notable example is the collaboration between singer Beyoncé and sportswear giant Adidas. The "Ivy Park x Adidas" collection garnered immense attention for its inclusive sizing, bold designs, and the fusion of sportswear with high fashion. Such collaborations not only showcase the business acumen of celebrities but also allow them to make a significant impact on the fashion industry by reaching a diverse and global audience.
Virtual Fashion: Celebrities in the Digital Age
As social media continues to reshape the way we consume content, celebrities have embraced the digital landscape to amplify their fashion influence. Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter have become platforms for celebrities to share their daily looks, endorse brands, and even launch their fashion lines directly to their followers.
In the realm of virtual fashion, the concept of "digital fashion shows" has gained traction. Celebrities, designers, and influencers collaborate to create immersive online experiences, showcasing the latest fashion trends in a virtual environment. This innovative approach to fashion presentations not only aligns with the evolving digital landscape but also allows celebrities to connect with fans on a more personal and interactive level.
Sustainable Celebrity Style: A Growing Trend
In recent years, there has been a notable shift towards sustainable and ethical fashion, and celebrities are increasingly using their influence to champion environmentally conscious choices. From red carpet events to everyday wear, celebrities are opting for eco-friendly brands, recycled materials, and ethical production processes.
Notable celebrities leading the charge in sustainable fashion include Emma Watson, who has been an advocate for ethical fashion and sustainable practices. Her red carpet appearances often feature outfits from environmentally conscious designers, sending a powerful message about the importance of making sustainable choices in the world of high fashion.
In conclusion, celebrity fashion news is a dynamic tapestry woven with red carpet glamour, street style creativity, influential collaborations, digital innovations, and a growing commitment to sustainability. As celebrities continue to shape and redefine fashion trends, their influence extends beyond the runway, impacting the way we perceive and engage with style in the ever-evolving world of fame and fashion.

NFT Future - tip for news on the big drop
NFT Art Market Bounces Back with Record Sales and New Trends
The market for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), unique digital assets that can represent art, music, collectibles, and more, saw a remarkable recovery in the last quarter of 2023, after a sharp decline earlier in the year. According to data from CryptoSlam.io, there has been a 40% surge in global digital collectible sales, indicating a robust market resurgence¹.
One of the driving forces behind this rebound is the emergence of new trends and categories in the NFT art space, such as crypto art, generative art, and metaverse art. Crypto art, or art that is created and sold using blockchain technology, has attracted a lot of attention and investment from both traditional and new collectors, as well as celebrities and influencers.
2024 and Beyond
The future of the NFT art industry also depends on the development of new business models and market forums that can support the growth and diversity of the market. Some of the possible models and forums include:
o Decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), which are self-governing entities that operate on the blockchain and allow users to collectively manage and fund NFT art projects and platforms.
o Fractional ownership, which allows users to own and trade fractions of NFT artworks, increasing the liquidity and accessibility of the market.
o Curated marketplaces, which provide a selective and quality-driven platform for NFT art, attracting more mainstream and high-end collectors and investors.
o Social media platforms, which enable users to discover, share, and promote NFT art, creating a more interactive and engaging community around the art.
o Educational platforms, which provide resources and guidance for NFT art creators and collectors, fostering a more informed and skilled market.
Some of the most notable crypto art sales in 2023 include:
- The Merge, a digital collage by Pak, sold for $91.8 million on Nifty Gateway in March².
- Everydays: The First 5000 Days, a digital mosaic by Beeple, sold for $69.3 million via Christie’s auction house in March².
- Van Gogh NFTs, a series of digital paintings inspired by the famous artist, sold for $2.5 million on OpenSea in November³.
Generative art, or art that is created using algorithms and code, has also gained popularity and recognition in the NFT art market. Some of the most successful generative art projects in 2023 include:
- Art Blocks, a platform that allows users to mint and collect unique generative artworks on the Ethereum blockchain, has generated over $500 million in sales since its launch in May⁴.
- Fidenza, a collection of 999 algorithmically generated abstract artworks by Tyler Hobbs, has become one of the most sought-after and expensive generative art collections, with an average sale price of over $1 million⁴.
- Autoglyphs, a collection of 512 minimalist generative artworks by Larva Labs, the creators of CryptoPunks, has reached a record sale price of $4.1 million for a single piece in October⁵.
Metaverse art, or art that is created and displayed in virtual worlds, has also emerged as a new frontier and opportunity for NFT artists and collectors. Some of the most innovative and immersive metaverse art experiences in 2023 include:
- The Museum of Crypto Art (MOCA), a virtual museum that showcases and preserves some of the most iconic and influential NFT artworks, has expanded its presence and collection in various metaverse platforms, such as Decentraland, Somnium Space, and Cryptovoxels⁶.
- Async Art, a platform that allows artists and collectors to create and own programmable artworks that change over time, has launched its own metaverse gallery, where users can interact with and explore the dynamic and evolving NFT artworks.
- SuperRare, a curated marketplace for digital art, has partnered with The Sandbox, a user-generated gaming platform, to create a metaverse art district, where artists and collectors can showcase and sell their NFT artworks in a virtual environment.
The NFT art market has proven to be resilient and adaptable, despite the challenges and uncertainties of the global pandemic and the volatile crypto market. With the continuous innovation and creativity of the NFT art community, the future of the digital art world looks bright and promising. 🌟

Europe Plant-Based Meat Market Analysis, Application and Forecast to 2021-2026
Bharat Book Bureau Provides the Trending Market Research Report on “Europe Plant-Based Meat Market Outlook, 2026” under Food & Beverage Market Research Reports Category. The report offers a collection of superior market research, market analysis, competitive intelligence and Market reports.
The Plant Based Meat Product Market in Europe is anticipated to witness the fastest growth over the forecast years on account of positive consumer outlook on vegetarian and vegan-meat products and stringent regulations against animal cruelty. Key manufacturers are implementing strategic initiatives, such as capacity expansion, product innovation, and mergers & acquisitions, to increase their sales in the regional market. For instance, in June 2020, Beyond Meat announced the expansion of its production capacity in Europe by acquiring a new production unit in Enschede, the Netherlands; and by opening a new co-manufacturing facility with Zandbergen World’s Finest Meat in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands.
According to the research report “Europe Plant-Based Meat Market Outlook, 2026" published by our Research, the plant based meat products market is growing rapidly. Plant based meat products are healthier as compared to traditional meats. They are low in cholesterol and high in proteins and fibre. The growing health awareness, cruelty towards animals and environment has led to changing habit of consumers to shift from animal meat and products to plant based meat products.
Plant based meat consumers have doubled from 1.3 million to the current estimated figure of 2.6 million, representing 3.2% of the European population. Europe plant based meat product market has shown a potential growth historically and is expected to cross the market size of USD 4523 Million by the forecasted period of 2026. United Kingdom is the major revenue generating region in Europe. A key part of what makes vegan food so stimulating is the growing community of social media influencers advocating the lifestyle as part of their brand.
The process of creating such realistic meaty products from plants might baffle some, one thing consumers can be certain about is that they are not made in the torturous way that its animal-based analogs are. Plant-based foods not only help consumer’s health, but also support the health of planet.
Plant based foods require fewer resources like land and water, rather than animal based foods. Close to 20% of the planet’s fresh water is used in the production of meat and dairy, and animal agriculture is a major driver of climate change, contributing around 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Animal farming is also not required each year. Meat and dairy specifically accounts for around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
According, to a 2018 University of Michigan study, commissioned by Beyond Meat, found that the Beyond Burger “generates 90% less greenhouse gas emissions, requires 46% less energy, has 99% less impact on water scarcity, and 93% less impact on land use than a ¼ pound of U.S. beef.” That’s a monumental difference!
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the food industry witnessed significant shifts, but, plant-based companies adapted and continued to launch new products and grow sales. Foodservice channel distribution was significantly impaired, and pantry stocking and panic buying led to a sharp increase in retail sales over the prior year. The COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns, has encouraged consumers to order goods online and this, in turn, has boosted the online sales channels.
Major Companies present in the market Amy's kitchen, Beyond meat, Conagra (Pinnacle Foods), Impossible food, Kellogg (Morning star farms), Kraft Heinz Company (Boca Burger), Maple leaf, Nestle (Garden Gourmet), Quorn, Tyson (Raised and Rooted), Unilever (The Vegetarian Butcher)
Considered in this report • Geography: Europe • Base year: 2020 • Estimated year: 2021 • Forecast year: 2026

The Digitization of the Economy and the New Dynamics of Industrial Firms-Juniper Publishers
Tumblr media
Introduction
Before the massive spread of Internet in the 1990s, the media markets were compartmentalized. The integration of large groups was mainly vertical, thanks to deregulation initiated in the field of television (ABC, Disney, AOL-Time Warner). This structuring has been completely modified with the arrival of digital technologies. Historical groups in this field are gradually entering into competition with others from related fields such as networks, operating systems, computer equipments, Internet platforms, etc. This is the phenomenon of verticalization of the value chain » often emphasized by Lombard [1,2]. New digital giants are born: the GAFA or GAFAM Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft.
Henceforth, the goal is to make a coherent ecosystem mastering at the same time, upstream the constraints related to the setting up of the networks and supports carrying the information (containers) and, downstream the expectations of the final users in terms of both basic services and more sophisticated digital solutions (contents). The market structure is oligopolistic. Therefore, competition occurs in an environment where both competitors and partners coexist. Indeed, the actors are in coopetition as indicated by Rosele Chim [3-8] examining the classical theories on competition and those on cooperation. Thus, they compete on certain markets or segments and cooperate on others, each one seeking to satisfy a targeted demand according to his level of specialization or his core business.
The digital revolution is in processing and imposes new modes of consumption and new business relationships. Several questions then arise. What are the effects of training on organizational models, distribution methods, the distribution of employment, which finally question labor law and social protection? To what extent can businesses reinvent themselves to adapt to these significant changes? How can individuals and society be able to cope with the rise of the vast process of disintermediation that is taking place on the targeted markets (the phenomenon of uberization of the economy)? All these questions are essential as this process is altering our vision of the world and is modifying our practices.
Our Study Presents Three Highlights that Focus on These Issues
a. firstly, the digitization as a factor of a new industrial economic order;
b. secondly, the new power of firms thanks to the multiplier networks of the current revolution;
c. finally, the risks of imbalance of the system and possible regulation instruments.
Go to
The Digitization for a New Economic Order
New Information and Communication Technologies (NICTs) have often given the feeling of the appearance of « New Economy » compared to « Old Economy ». The configurations outlined by the technological alliances of firms propelled the industrialized countries into the emergence of a long cycle of growth with strong disruptions. Economic renewal puts traditional analysis to the test. Perceptions are varied between electronic economy, digital economy and industry 4.0. The field covered by digital economy is very distinctive.
Approach and Framework of Analysis
Let us choose the following approach: all economic and social activities using internet networks, connected objects, electronic sensors that mobilize aggregation of « big data » for the treatment of information of their entire value chain from the producer to the final customer. Today modern firms must first create desires in the consumer’s life in order to be able to impose themselves as a producer guaranteeing their satisfaction. In Galbraith [9] revised sequence », in contrast to classical industry where offer for goods and services must satisfy demand of consumers, it is the individual with unlimited needs who serves the expansion of economic structures.
Would demand dictate its law to offer? Maybe indirectly, unbeknownst to consumers. Apple, like other digital giants, did it not captivate its customers to sell them the created applications and services? Indeed, the dynamics of the entire ecosystem is based on the « manufacture » of a being in the grip of the need to consume. The latter is the means likely to ensure the growth for growth that presides over the decisions of the technostructure. As technology and power of computation are no longer limiting factors, firms seek to collect considerable data, which are then aggregated, processed, stored. This information is useful for controlling the production process (producers) and better market expectations (customers).
The changes brought about by digital technology compel world-class firms, as well as smaller firms, to permanent adaptations, both technologically and organizationally because of the change in uses, information and culture. This economy integrates new networks that, beyond new activities (specific services, business creation), lead to better performance (energy, industrial, environmental) through lean management and more « smart » processes. Here the notion of supply chain appears essential to the extent that manufacturers seek to pool their resources, to create synergies, particularly by developing common supply platforms to gain advantage over competitors.
How do these mutations take place in the countries? Take the case of France and Germany. According to the Economic Analysis Council (2015), France can rely on the strengths that constitute a significant demand, the flexibility allowed by the status of the auto-entrepreneur, an authority of experienced competition and a proactive policy of access to data. On the other hand, it is lagging on the supply side. The main reason for this situation is overly rigid sectoral regulations and a poorly adapted financing structure to minimize this gap, even to conquer a leadership position, France must notably be tolerant with its sectoral regulations, in order to boost the experimentation of new business models and promote healthy competition.
Moreover, Germany has launched a major project to digitize its industry since the end of 2012 in order to maintain its competitiveness. The challenge for businesses is to move from today’s centralized management of their production to decentralized management. In the core of factories of the future, faster, less energy efficient, more flexible, we find Internet and a new discipline: cyberphysics. In industry 4.0, there is a generalization of embedded systems, softwares, flow and data management software. They must allow a better communication between the machines and a better interactivity man-machine.
The observation thus established allows to better identify the more serious issues, especially for the industry that is at the heart of these changes both internally (optimization of organizational processes, adaptation or renewal of the production tool) and externally (changes in regulations, customer satisfaction).
Study of Socio-Economic Issues
On one hand, the digitization appears as a simple evolution because of its very weak ripple effects on all sectors of economic activity and on the employment, even if we can recognize its role of catalyst in the third industrial revolution. The machine in some jobs replaces man but, for all that, there is no increase in production yields due to technical progress as in the 20th century. Gordon (2016) believes that this revolution is not able to have impacts with the same intensity as the two previous ones: « washing machine contributed more to emancipation and quality of life than smartphone ». « Elevator and refrigerator did more than Internet ». It only concerns communication and entertainment, at most 7% of GDP. Even the big data, used in marketing and technicalcommercial services, would not have a significant scope. The same is true for employment effects. Robert Gordon recalls that the United States is today in a situation of almost full employment which challenges us as to the reality of the shocks of digitization of the economy.
On other hand, it is believed that the world is truly entering a new technological era and prefers to highlight the many virtuous innovations. According to Joseph Alois SCHUMPETER, successive shocks or waves of upswings and downswings have impacted society and punctuated its transformations, since the birth of industrial capitalism in the nineteenth century. Entrepreneur or innovator is essential in Schumpeter analysis of the process of development which is dynamic and discontinuous. Innovations in one field of activities can induce other innovations in related fields (Figure 1).
The Following Indicators Also Show that the Digital Revolution is in Processing
a. Increase in productivity gains, after a sharp slowdown at the end of the « Thirty Glorious years » until the mid-1990s;
b. Creation of productivity gains in a very singular way in services whose share exceeds 75% in the economic sectors;
c. Considering the energy constraint and the availability of raw materials that has changed the perception of consumption and renewal of resources;
d. Measure’s evolution of wealth’s level: from GDP to the HDI. Wealth and industrial power could not be measured only by business value added, social inequality or poverty level, but also since the citizens’ willingness to build a fairer and healthier society (system of health education, unemployment insurance). In the sense of Amartya SEN (1990), the digital does not escape these choices of access to knowledge and leisure for all people with the development of more and more « free » applied services;
e. Need or obligation of technological breakthrough for businesses due to the preeminence of advanced computing (artificial intelligence , exploitation of big data, exploitation of cloud), also the proliferation of connected objects (link between the physical object and the digital with the problems related to the recovery of data as well as their processing and storage), and then the democratization of advanced robotics (cobots, collaborative robots, autonomous machines).
Similarly, the evolution of human-machine relations challenges us: do need and use justify production when machine makes easier access to information and decision-making? Permanently, the use of network opens new perspectives to Internet users and implicitly changes their behavior. Internet is the main model. Originally mass media, nowadays social space where communication by text and image is instant and unlimited, consequently it becomes a social network (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and more).
Consumer’s behavior as firm’s behavior has evolved in the same way. All branches of industry have become those of the NICT industries [5]. These last ones seek to better know the customer to better satisfy him. Hence the demand is more volatile, unpredictable, and the success of firms no longer depends on mass production and the search for efficiency under cost constraint through economies of scale, but the speed and flexibility of the response to market demands with more personalized and higher quality products. Industry should gain in competitiveness thanks to new technologies (connected machines, additive manufacturing, process digitization, cyber-production system).
Objects that are more and more connected are not worth their own value, but rather associated services, most often in online space. The challenge for businesses is to find even smarter processes to adapt. In factories, performance management is measured by the flexibility of production, the traceability of information in the production process and energy savings. Contemporary economic philosophy [10,11] reminds us that: we are currently experiencing a period of immense change, comparable to the end of the Roman Empire or the Renaissance. Our Western societies have already experienced two great revolutions: the transition from oral to written, then from written to print. The third is the transition from print to new technologies, equally important. This change involves major upheavals at all levels.
Upheavals and Emergence of a New Model
Technology is a factor of rupture, destabilization, change. The importance of geopolitical upheavals or economic stakes is in line with the strong and sustained growth of firms in the most developed countries. Indeed, these large organizations stand out in the world market by their financial weight, the multiplicity of defended interests, the extent of production and distribution sites and their spheres of influence, which are beyond the legal, political and economic power of the host States.
In 2016, the technology sector outperforms the financial sector as indicated by the PwC annual ranking of the world top 100 market capitalizations. GAFAM are in the first place among American firms that remain globally the most dynamic and the best valued in the world: they represent 54% of the top 100 firms, ahead of those from China and Hong Kong (11%), the United Kingdom (7%), Germany (5%), France (4%) or Japan (4%). Their level of market capitalization has more than doubled since 2009 reaching $ 16,245 billion in 2015 and $ 15,577 billion in 2016. This figure is comparable to US GDP ($ 18,624 billion in 2016).
More specifically about the weight and influence GAFAM, we can make the following comparison between their market capitalization and the GDP of certain countries: Note that the stock market valuation of Apple is slightly lower than the GDP of the Netherlands, that of Microsoft is comparable to the GDP of Colombia or exceeds that of Switzerland. Similarly, the financial weight of GAFAM exceeds the wealth created by France and is at the same level as that of an emerging country such as Brazil (which produces a wealth superior to France of nearly 15%) (Tables 1 & 2).
Moreover, in the field of the Internet, we note that American and Chinese firms also exercise significant power: The United States account for 72% of the top 50 world sites against 16% for China. The open path in this field and in those directly associated with it (networks, IT, multimedia, etc.) suggests the emergence of a bipolar world without the European Union [12]. By observing the dynamics of European firms on highly technological and strategic markets, we can notice the strong skills required in digital technology. For example, in aeronautics (Airbus, Safran, Thalès, Rolls Royce, Zodiac) or space (launchers, satellites) with the operational implementation of the future Galileo geolocation system competing with the American GPS, the multipolarite could be preserved. European Union thus strengthens its position in the global « representative » of Internet governance by influencing political orientations and industrial strategies to better support European firms in the digital transition.
Beyond the geopolitical stakes, a new model is setting up. Firms now need « real time » signals from the evolution of the market. They set up ad hoc processes that can collect and interpret these information flows. The goal is not to miss the next technical « disruption » a total break with the previous phase as it generates radical changes. Disruptive innovation is a breakthrough innovation, as opposed to incremental innovation, which merely optimizes the existing [13]. Thus, the firms potentially in commercial competition can form a network to work in partnership, in order to increase the creation opportunities in adequation with the expectations of the market. They also gain in performance by using their internal resources and relying on external resources in the fields of competence dedicated to each provider. This is the rule of coopetition according to Rosele Chim [8].
By revolutionizing organizational models and modes of distribution, digital economy first imposes new ways of consuming characterized by the « dematerialization » of consumer products. The digital revolution disrupts certain business models in many economic areas or traditional media [5,8]. It bypasses service providers or formerly established intermediaries. As such, it initiates a vast process of « disintermediation » which favors the mediation of the new giants of the Net on the concerned markets. This is the phenomenon of uberization of the economy according to Bassoni and Joux [14,15].
The contemporary period is marked by an economic model of products and services permanently free. This is a real cultural and sociological revolution for users who no longer must pay to consume their information assets: online newspapers and music, radio shows in podcasts, TV, videos, movies in streaming. They can now go on platforms to perform their transactions (Amazon), to access applications (windows, iTunes) or to perform their research or information (Google, traditional online media sites). Greffe and Sonnac [16] consider that these platforms allow, on one hand, to make quantitative and qualitative audiences available to advertisers, and on other hand, to push for the development of specific business models and dynamics. Here the success consists in the ability of each to structure its users in communities offer them services and tools that will facilitate their virtual social interactions.
Countries also can take advantage of these technological advances by focusing on household equipment and encouraging businesses to invest in Research and Development to make full use of the new offered capabilities (e-commerce, client and supplier data processing software, secure transactions) (Figure 2). The chart above illustrates the digital divide between European countries, with some not giving consumers or businesses the opportunity to use new technologies to facilitate adaptation to new models of trade, transactions and management. It is also noted that it is mainly the more affluent countries of the North which have fully changed in this new economy. As an example, we can cite the success of the Israeli industrial model through its role as active investor, its directive steering and a strong tax incentive [17]. In fact, for nearly 15 years, the government has successfully launched a $ 100 million venture capital fund to help create startups and high-tech, high value-added projects.
Israel has become the first country in the world with the highest ratio of R&D expenditures to GDP, far ahead of the United States, the OECD countries and France. Israel has 4.3% in 2010, against 2.8%, 2.3% and 2.2% for other countries respectively. Finally, the consumption habits of citizens have been considerably modified, demanding a strong and rapid adaptation of businesses as well as their production process. Hence the emergence of a new economic model where firms will develop another form of power.
Go to
The New Power of Firms
The movie and audiovisual programs industry in the United States as well as in Europe, in addition to France, constitute the illustrative field of firms constantly changing the strategic alliances [18,19].
Business Strategy and Power of Market
The long history of industrial crises in the field of movies and television highlights technical and technological transformations that have triggered the disruption of NICTs [3,6]. We observed in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s a vast movement of concentration in the world of the media. Behind the American Majors, like the networks of Europe, the dynamics of the technological clusters is intense. Controlling products and markets presents several explanatory factors: evolution of technologies including digitization and compression of signals; d e r e g u l a t i o n which leads to the end of natural monopolies for the exploitation of networks and the provision of telecommunications services; transformation of the competitive environment that will drive players to massively diversify their activities towards the multimedia markets following the collapse of the traditional sectors of the electronics industry; current situation due to the growing interest of consumers for activities related to multimedia and which require firms to adapt.
In fact, the new competitors appear from very different fields: network infrastructures, IT, audiovisual, publishing, distribution. These firms that emerge seek to control programs (contents) and distribution networks (containers) as explained Guillou and Mouline [20,21]. The phenomenon of globalization, the expansion of cultural and informational consumption, the power of the market and the maintenance of the content industries, has spread to the cultural, informational and communicational industries outside the world. Major firms have emerged by mastering the tools and new uses of the web. As an illustration, in the field of music, the popularity of iTunes, Apple Music, YouTube, YouTube Music remind traditional firms how much they are dependent on the decisions of the giants of the Net, which threatens again the recorded music market.
The successes of these new world leaders come from their ability to force users to use their application or materials. The work of Kelly, Shapiro and Varian [22,23] shows that the consumer will find himself in a system quite different from that of traditional neo-classical economics. Its purchasing autonomy is subject to sometimes strong constraints. Indeed, the user of certain technologies can be « locked » without being able to easily change technology.
Like most global markets, Internet has an oligopolistic structure with businesses that, because of their ability to impose standards, tend towards a dominant or even hegemonic position. That allows to highlight three factors: drop in the costs of technology, according to the MOORE law, permanent innovation and intelligence. The cost of production of a smartphone is low in view of the value of the components necessary for its manufacture, in view also of the number of users as well as the applications and operating systems developed and updated regularly in line. In this context, we can understand that the movements of concentration continued with the development of Internet and associated applications. Two main and indissociable reasons can be invoked: on the one hand, the added-value chain linked to content and the resulting wealth creation capabilities; on the other hand, the structuring of the production of the containers and the search for management optimization of trade flows and logistics necessary for the distribution of final goods.
In fact, overall satisfaction depends both on the quality of the products and services adapted to the expectations of consumers and the organization of the market. For these leading firms, purchasing has become a source of productivity. Because buyers, faced with the multiplicity of information channels and orders, want to see more complementarity between tools and better harmonization of data collected by the company. Thus, the supply function has evolved while allowing to provide innovative and quality products, and avoiding stockouts, elements both costly for the company and negative in terms of image and notoriety. It is from now on the whole chain of value that the company considers in the evaluation of its performance. It adapts in an almost iterative way, according to the cycles of production and the evolution of the competitive environment, all its processes for the realization of the fixed objectives.
In this context, the control of costs or delays as well as the control of the quality or the reliability of the final production remain; but other indicators are also used to measure the success of the corporate strategy: customer loyalty, improvement in economic performance (sales, operating margin) or financial performance (profit per share), promotion of image or brand, innovation (R&D budget, collaboration with research laboratories, patents pending), internal and external growth prospects for the company (unprofitable activities outsourcing, key skills current or future strengthening by training or recruiting the necessary talents, positioning on international markets).
The situation we have just described makes it possible to better understand the market power of these new players who, taking advantage of the high expectations of consumers, manage to make them captive. Nevertheless, other elements that did not exist in the previous revolution must be considered to ensure their strategic power: networks and empowerment.
The Era of Networking and Empowerment
Through networks, firms can adopt strategies to diversify their activities. This allows, on the one hand, to erect barriers to entry against potential competitors. According to Stigler [24], a barrier to entry is a cost of production that must be charged by a firm wishing to enter a market, without those already in place having to do it. This offers the opportunity, on the other hand, to set up an investment policy whose profitability is more secure. In fact, the risk of loss is reduced because of the holding of a larger products portfolio and profit prospects discounted on other markets. Megafirms correspond to a global market and millions of captive users.
For the third type of firms after the multinationals, the most important is not so much the gain in market shares as the network constituted by the number of users who fuel the need for development of closed mobile applications to the Internet service. Competition is no longer at the level of the operating systems but more platforms with data become permanent: innovation, alliances, searching for external growth. Facebook confirms it; according to manager Mark Zuckerberg, performance goes through a more open and connected system.
Thanks to the increased use of digital channels and common platforms for data exchange and processing, B2B is constantly growing. Similarly, on the consumer side, the more widespread use of Internet strongly influences exchanges between individuals (online sales and purchases). « GAFAM deal with the same users but with its own assets: mobile terminal, research browser, advertising browser, cloud platform, community of developers » according to Bourdin [12].
Nevertheless, several characteristics of these markets on which these large firms are positioned, make it possible to measure well the difficulties to maintain a stability of networks and a continuous growth: First, they are hyper fragmented and heterogeneous. Then the situations of dominant positions are very quickly jostled because of the pressure of new entrants or substitutable products. Lastly, product cycles are very short and innovation processes are constantly improving. It is the result of the search for creativity and permanent innovation that ultimately leads to the development of new services and new markets. All this poses significant risks to the market equilibrium and pushes to question the means of regulation.

The Risks of Imbalance and the Search for Regulation
The 2007 crisis demonstrated the complexity of business relationships, the inability to master information flows or to predict the onset of a collapse of a growth and confidence-based system. With the advent of digital technology, we can wonder, beyond its beneficial effects on global economy, on its capacity to create growth through technical progress and to ensure an increase in social well-being. Finally, the combination of financialization, digitization and globalization would constitute all the explanatory factors for the deregulation of the system, with each element allowing the other to increase its intensity and its propagation.
The Relation Between Technical Progress and Growth
Many firms, like the media groups or giants of the Net, have gone through economic and organizational crises, forcing them to reinvent themselves to survive Bassoni and Joux [15]. Businesses must constantly adapt their production model to market developments. This external environment can be at the same time very close (local market) or very distant (global market) but impose very strong constraints to be considered in the development strategy. According to Bassoni and Liautard [14], the territories bear the stigma of the « creative destruction » that Ja Schumpeter [25] explained. They are, over time, the theaters where two concomitant and inextricably linked processes take place: that of the decline of traditional activities and the rise of new activities ».
This trend is well underway and affects all sectors of economy. But a fundamental question arises: will this digital revolution increase the productive capacity or, on the contrary, as Cohen [26] asserts, that it will not bring anything comparable to the technological revolutions related to the invention of electricity and combustion engine? The report of slow economic growth observed for thirty years in the United States, with a median income that no longer progresses despite the arrival of digital technology, would rather support the second thesis. The firm no longer creates enough added value for the employment of additional staff and for training effects in other economic sectors since it outsources activities to subcontractors in a massive way.
In addition, compared to previous periods, the contribution of technological progress generates insecurity by replacing jobs with robots, with automation chains, with intelligent processes. 50% of jobs would be threatened by the development of digitization. It is the middle classes, the banks, the insurance businesses and the administrations, which seem the most exposed by this evolution of the employment because of the increase, on the one hand, of the need of labor poorly qualified to carry out basic tasks and on the other hand, of important resources released by and for those who are behind this digital transformation. In the United States, 1% of the richest people have seen their share in the GDP increase of 15 points in thirty years.
The challenge for the future is no longer to increase the productivity of men at work (lower than in the 20th century), robots and computers replacing them, but to redistribute the profits and above all, to raise the level of well-being of all (education, health, eco-citizenship, eco-transportation). The economic sphere is turned to producing not goods but applications that provide users with free information. As a result, what is of value it is what escaped this free, it is the positional goods: where I live, or I send my children to school, can I be healed in good conditions [26]. In this context, France has made the implicit choice for three decades of an economy without industry. In the charts below, we can observe the place that France occupies among the industrialized countries in the world and in Europe (Figure 3-5).
We can admit that between 2000 and 2015, the process of industrialization concerns emerging countries and especially China, which alone exceeds $ 4 500 billion in value added. The BRIC group has recorded very strong growth, unlike European countries which have not developed their production tools. South Korea, in full industrial transformation, has managed in 15 years to exceed the value added of France, Russia, Mexico or Indonesia. This dynamic is explained by the importance of the share that some countries devote to industry in GDP: over 35% in China, Indonesia or South Korea, 30% in Germany, Mexico or Russia, France being below 20%, like that of the United States or the United Kingdom.
In view of these elements and the trends that emerge, several questions arise. The digital revolution and the challenges it poses are not an opportunity for the implementation of a process of reindustrialization and revitalization of businesses turning to more competitiveness. Will this revolution have the capacity to relocate industrial activity that has disappeared to the extent that factories, which have become more flexible and automated, have production costs that are almost « insensitive » to the cost of labor?
Indeed, the previous revolution had put more on an increase of the volumes to justify the economic investment and to increase the production, the size and the costs of return of the businesses. Today, the theoretical growth factors are based, at constant product volumes, on the reduction of capital consumption and a return on investment from higher capital employed. Nevertheless, thanks to 2008 crisis, the direct effects of digitization have been significantly accentuated. It is the rise of unemployment, precarious jobs, the decline in average wages, the growing deficit of foreign trade, the obstacles to growth, the devitalization of territories, the increased vulnerability of society. The sustainable development is considered in some extent by a production turned to employment. Indeed, the industry includes a mode of distribution of wealth through the wage system, while the NICT model does without it by accentuating the unemployment of performance and competence.
Six Orientations are Advocated
a. support creativity and human development through the modernization of the education system, valuing the imagination and taking risks;
b. develop economy based on quality and provided services;
c. renew the energy model and master consumption for all and sustainably;
d. initiate a « big bang » of territories (mobilizing and structuring projects);
e. put finance at the service of growth;
f. strengthen global influence capacity by improving the competitiveness of firms and by acting within Europe to rebalance competition between emerging countries and the first industrialized countries.
g. These guidelines challenge the sustainability of development and governance: govern differently to produce otherwise.
GAFAM and other high-tech companies have accompanied digital change. It is a question of working in a transversal way in collaboration with the actors of the market to advance the scientific research, the development, the applications at the service of the product. The goal is to move towards some form of social welfare of individuals.
Global Competition, Strategic Coopetition and Risks of Collusion
Beyond the problems related to competition, there is the question of the sharing of added value between the different actors: service intermediaries (Facebook, Google), incumbent operators (Orange, British Telecom), network and terminal equipment manufacturers (Alcatel Lucent, Dassault System), content producers (Disney, AOL-Time Warner, Newscorp). The emergence of GAFAM and their mega-power was built through major breakthroughs: hardware (Apple), search (Google), e-commerce (Amazon), social (Facebook). Industry 4.0 offers new perspectives of digital applications for the benefit of citizens, customized products, needs and specific markets.
The search for an optimum of satisfaction goes through the development of business networks, common platforms of exchanges, partnerships between the academic and scientific world and that of companies, multiple collaborations in order to answer the economic and societal problems. The stakes are up to the challenges that we perceive in the 7 industry paradigms 4.0 described by Blanchet [27]: management of the complexity induced by digitization allowing the customization of products ; industrial relocation near final markets with high automation production processes ; dynamic and more efficient supply chain (lean); end of the product-service divide and supplier-customer reconciliation thanks to the data collected and which allow to improve the quality of service and to optimize the life cycle; end of the logic of an economy of scale, the new technologies implemented mobilizing the physical asset more and allowing the passage from a « push » logic (to manufacture to store) to a « pull » logic (to make on command); end of Taylorism with learning organizations and increased reality technologies (increased monitoring, remote work, tele maintenance, remote factory inspection). more energyefficient industry (circular economy), better integrated in its territory of implantation (CSR approach) and more attractive [28- 31].
The coopetition practiced by most big firms that provides a balance of power should gradually fade in favor of more intense competition due to the increased development of networks, clouds and big data. In this context, how to ensure balanced competition for the benefit of consumers? The arrests, interrogations and hearings in front of the institutions in the United States and the recent trials in Europe against the GAFAM show the limits of the digital economy where the influence of firms and markets exceeds the power of States. Which regulatory instruments to implement?
Regulation Instruments
According to neo-classical economics, and particularly the school of industrial organization, it is necessary to think of the necessity of reinventing a more socially model of growth just by integrating the future generations, more economical and more durable. This seems conceivable in the evolution of economic thinking, of industrial analysis, which is gradually considering the human approach of the aleas of the conditions against growth. It places greater emphasis on the training of precarious populations, namely unemployed and unskilled, on the emergence of new skills, on social innovation and on the optimization of available resources in the light of the consumption [32-35].
Another vision encourages us to put forward rather the voluntarist strategy aiming at the search for the competitivity of the companies at the local scale of the territories to integrate in the model of regulation all the societal evolutions. Thus, countries and regions can exist in terms of industrial weight and have influence in terms of geopolitical weight at the global level. Economic poles in globalism would favor the emergence of high value-added technologies sold in the world. Hence the questions about the nature of the businesses in the future, their organization, their production, their market and their process of survival [36-38].
The dynamics of liberalization is at the heart of digital economy that cannot seek to control markets and firms whose field of action is supra-national. There appears to be a temptation in the global market between the return to protectionism on one side and the intensification of liberalization on the other side. Indeed, there are counter-powers to the large influence of digital economy: the consumer is first, versatile and communicating globally via networks and potentially sensitive to the image of the firm in case of repeated and notorious; the competition is then stronger and focused on innovation, structural and partnership organization; the regulator is finally, on the lookout for any risk of technical, legal or financial imbalance to guarantee an optimum of satisfaction to the consumers and more broadly to the society [39-42]. This is a form of declining general equilibrium with the Paretian optimum since more CSR logic is considered with respect to the external environment. And we find corroborated the principle of the research of the balance between the industrial regulation and the innovation [43,44].
Go to
Conclusion
The digital revolution has effects on all areas of society. Consumption habits have been modified, pushing companies to adapt their mode of production. GAFAM and new types of companies from the Internet and the high-tech sectors stand out thanks to their own identity and their capacity for innovation.
The power and influence of these organizations is significant in achieving the balance of fragmented, heterogeneous and volatile markets due to competitive pressures and ongoing innovations. Liberalization is faced to protectionist temptations. The context challenges the rationalization of organizational models and productive activities, the mode of job destruction, societal involvement and the method of profit compilation. States are grappling with the model of digital economy and the dynamics of a new type of industrial organization through the protection of citizens (Google), the avoidance of instrumentation (Facebook), the ecosystem predation (Amazon), the tax avoidance (Apple, Google, Amazon, Airbnb). Adaptations are long term. The changes are important.

That Time $50 Used Apple Laptops Caused a Stampede
A version of this post originally appeared on Tedium, a twice-weekly newsletter that hunts for the end of the long tail.
There’s been a lot in the news lately about kids trying to embrace the weird world of remote learning.
The problem is that the technology, while it’s ready to handle such use cases, isn’t as accessible on a universal scale as it needs to be.
To put it another way: Many school districts, due to budget considerations, still do not give away laptops or tablets to every student in the way that most employers give their employees a laptop (or possibly even a phone). We may believe the children are our future, but good luck getting someone to put in a down payment on a decent computer during a pandemic.
The truth is, though, that this has always been a challenge. The pandemic simply puts it into sharp relief.
Back in 2005, another strange situation put this into sharp relief—although that situation was a bit more manmade.
Let’s go back to the time a school district decided to sell its old iBooks for $50, and the havoc that decision wrought.
23,000
The number of iBooks that Apple supplied to Henrico County, Virginia in 2001, in two separate shipments—one for high schoolers and one for middle schoolers. The plan, which was timed to the 2001 announcement of the white polycarbonate iBook G3 “Snow,” reflected how the county school district, outside of Richmond, was ahead of its time on technology, having purchased the proverbial “laptop for every student” at a time when computers in the classroom for most meant having a well-stocked computer lab. “This is the mammoth–the single largest sale of portable computers in education ever,” Steve Jobs said in a news release at the time. (That said, it does appear that many of the laptops Henrico County received were of the older first-gen iBook style, akin to the original iMac.)
How Henrico County became an iBook innovator before it became a weird footnote
There are two stories about the Henrico County, Virginia school district worth discussing in the context of computing history: The fact that the school may have been one in the first in the country to give a laptop to nearly every student, and what happened to those laptops after the district decided to upgrade.
The first is a story about a forward-thinking district leveraging its largesse for the purposes of equipping its student body for the future. The second, unfortunately, kind of has a Lord of the Flies-type vibe.
Let’s spend a little time talking about the first part, because it really was an innovative program. In 2001, Henrico County entered into a lease-to-own program with Apple, at a cost of $18.5 million, to supply an entire district with laptops. Dr. Mark Edwards, the superintendent of the Henrico County School District, spoke positively of the program when it was first launched.
“The iBook is going to change education in terms of how we teach and learn,” Edwards said in a promotional video for the second-generation iBook. “It’s a tool for collaboration; it’s a tool for invention, for exploration. With that, we developed a vibrant learning community where everyone is a learner and everyone is a teacher.”
The Apple deal had ripple effects—other nearby schools, such as Lindsay Middle School further down Interstate 64 in Hampton, Virginia, also started experimenting with laptops around this time, and other districts across the country started using laptops at slightly smaller scales. Apple’s long-standing push toward education, which helped keep the company afloat even during lean years, seemed like it was getting a few successful hits thanks to the iBook.
(Heck, Apple even developed its own specialized cart for holding the laptops when they were not in use, for schools that didn’t want students to take them home.)
But being an educational setting, there were (of course!) hiccups in Henrico County. While the program drew positive initial headlines, it gained its first hint of notoriety after 50 to 60 students were caught downloading porn on their machines—which (of course!) led to news coverage. One concerned parent let his opinion on the laptops be known.
“We have given them adult equipment—tools,” he said in comments to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “We have given them to kids who are using them as toys. We’re passing it down the line to kids who aren’t quite ready to use it and they’re going ape.”
And students were attempting to hack into the school district’s systems to change grades.
But Henrico County was willing to correct mistakes as needed. The wired network, which the teachers largely used, was separated from the wireless one that the students did. And in a 2002 article about the laptop program, Henrico schools technology director Mike Smith noted that the district had pretty good content filtering—an upgraded version that was 95 to 98 percent effective. He was a realist about the other 2 to 5 percent.
“The porn industry wants to get to children,” he told the Associated Press in 2002. “As long as that’s the case, you’re never going to be able to block 100 percent of it.”
All in all, pretty much what you would expect for the launch of a laptop program for classrooms in 2001.
$4M
The amount that Dell reportedly undercut Apple in a successful bid in 2005 to win the laptop contract for high-school students that Apple had earned for the iBook sale in 2001. (The middle-school contract largely stayed in place.) While the county said it valued its relationship with Apple, that deal was expensive to keep—and by the time the district started working with Dell, it had spent $43.6 million with Apple over four years.

The day that Henrico County’s wide-scale iBook experiment turned ugly
When it comes to computers in highly organized contexts like education or business, there’s a constant need to upgrade. Generally, the cycle is around three years, maybe longer if your budget is tight.
With Henrico County, the cycle was about four years. I know this because of the strange situation that happened at the Richmond International Raceway on August 16, 2005. On that day, the county held a surplus sale in which the district sold these laptops, which originally went for around $1,400 new, for the bargain-basement price of $50.
The news stories, which got significantly more international press than the original agreement between Henrico County and Apple did, implied that desperation was driving the people trying to get these computers. People got trampled. Some needed medical care. Someone lost their sandal during the melee. One person wet themselves while waiting in line.
But these were $50 wireless-enabled computers at a time when, if you went to the Apple Store, $49 could buy you a mouse. For many families without access to technology, the value proposition spoke for itself.
Still, these laptops were fairly out of date at the time, but not to the point of uselessness. While you could get online with them, they would likely be quite pokey with the latest version of Mac OS X at the time, 10.4 Tiger. And they were soon to be made completely obsolete by the transition away from PowerPC announced two months prior.
And again, these were laptops used by high schoolers in all states of disarray. This may have been the most expensive thing a young teen ever owned, and odds are high that they’re going to break it. If a kid got a hold of a lighter and used it to melt down some of the plastic, or decided to draw on the back with a permanent marker, all that stuff was still there.
But they were computers, and they worked. And for some people, that’s all that mattered.
Now, surplus programs are generally not promoted very much, are low-key affairs, and are ways to get a computer on the cheap.
But that’s not what happened in Richmond. It was announced publicly, including on the school district’s website, and promoted to the media. A passage from the announcement:
A unique opportunity is available from Henrico County Public Schools. Used Apple iBook laptop computers will be on sale for $50 each, with a one-per-person limit. The one-day sale will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
One thousand laptops will be sold at the school warehouse—361 Dabbs House Road beside the Eastern Government Center—on a first-come, first-serve basis. Only cash or checks will be accepted.
The white, Power PC 750s with 12-inch screens have 320 megabytes of memory, Mac OS 10.2.8, and AppleWorks 6.2.9.
The public announcement that the district was getting rid of a thousand iBooks created a frenzy, one that spread far beyond the school district’s borders and hit the international news. For one thing, Apple blogs drew attention to the event, and Apple fans are crazy, so many of them legitimately discussed traveling long distances to get a $50 laptop.
While the school district managed the devices while they were still in the classroom, the Henrico County government handled their sale and disposal, and did so in a fairly haphazard way.
Tumblr media
Trying to find images or video of this thing that happened was surprisingly hard; I couldn’t even find video of the incident. Here’s a contemporary screenshot of a news report at the time. Image:  Internet Archive
Case in point on this issue: A quote from a guy who was beating people with a lawn chair in an effort to protect his spot in line.
“I took my chair here and threw it over my shoulder and I went, ‘Bam,’” the guy said. “They were getting in front of me, and I was there a lot earlier than them, so I thought that it was just.”
(That quote was enough to draw the attention of famed Microsoft blogger Raymond Chen, who deadpanned of the man’s claim, “That’s one of the guiding principles this country was founded on.”)
If anything, the overwhelmed reaction to the iBooks reflected something basic: While Henrico County did its students a lot of good by purchasing these laptops, and put in a lot of work to acquire them and run its program, the program did not go far enough. The school district spent tens of millions of dollars on these machines, and when they were spent, the district tried to extend their life in the most haphazard way possible.
The district didn’t even bother to limit the sale to county residents until it started getting attention on Apple blogs. And by then, the buzz around the selloff all but guaranteed a bad result.
Looking at it now, the tragedy of the situation is much more clear: There were lots of people in its community that could use these machines, and even selling them for cheap left people out. A quote from Paul Proto, the director of general services for Henrico County, seemed telling to a degree, a general misunderstanding of the situation.
“It's rather strange that we would have such a tremendous response for the purchase of a laptop computer—and laptop computers that probably have less-than-desirable attributes,” Proto said to the Associated Press. “But I think that people tend to get caught up in the excitement of the event—it almost has an entertainment value.”
Yes, that is probably the most common, least charitable interpretation of what happened that day. But on the other hand, what if that value was handed off to people who needed it the right way, say, through a nonprofit like Goodwill?
This was the age before the smartphone, when real internet access required a computer. I imagine some of these people just wanted a way to get online, or at the very least, an extra machine to tinker with or hand off to their kids.
One has to wonder if we are too quick to throw off good technology just because it’s outdated.
3.8%
The approximate value that the iBook G3 devices sold by Henrico County kept over four years, based on their $1,299 list price in 2001 and $50 selling price in 2005. (One presumes that Apple gave the school district a discount.) That means that someone who started high school in Henrico County in 2001 saw the laptop that got them through four years of school lose 96 percent of its value through normal use. Can you imagine an equivalent device depreciating at the same rate today?
We’re 15 years past the Henrico County stampede, with a bigger need for older devices than ever. And we’re struggling to manage them correctly
Part of the reason I found myself reflecting on this story was a discussion I had with a Twitter pal of mine, John Bumstead, a recycler and reseller who specializes in old Apple equipment through his company RDKL, Inc.
Bumstead often sees old machines like vintage iBooks and MacBooks pass through his purview, many of which are good enough to reuse. But for many recyclers, there is often a cost/benefit equation at play. The way he put it to me involved electric drills getting taken to iBooks. At some point, the value equation may mean even working machines find their way to the scrap heap—because its raw materials are worth more than the machine itself.
“Recyclers have the unenviable task of deciding the fate of millions of devices—scrap it, or if it’s valuable enough as what it is (a usable computer), sell it to those who would repair/refurbish,” he explained in an interview. “A laptop has about a $10 scrap value, meaning if its parts are broken down (plastic, board, screen, battery, metal), the material can be sold for about $10.”
Perhaps the saddest examples, at least on the Apple side, are the “cloud-locked” machines, which are otherwise perfectly functional but made useless by anti-theft functions contained in iCloud. Many customers get rid of their devices without turning off this functionality, and the result is that phones, iPads, even modern laptops are of no resale value beyond the worth of their metal.
During normal times, stuff like this is already bad enough. But we’re facing a historic need for computers—particularly those just powerful enough to get a 7-year-old through a virtual learning session while working remote. And computing disparities can remove learning gains. While many schools have options like Chromebooks and iPads available, many others do not.
Bumstead notes that, as a non-certified refurbisher, he’s often not put up against the more stringent standards for certification. While it limits his access to machines from more traditional supply chains, in a way, this has put him in an unusual situation where he ends up taking the machines deemed not good enough for other recyclers—often polycarbonate MacBooks that can still access the modern Internet and still work just fine with a little TLC, but are more than a decade past their sell-by date. (The video above explains his POV on this situation.)
“I’ve sold hundreds in the last few months to people using them for school. And the irony is that they came from schools, were retired to recyclers, became half-destroyed in the process … then I pieced them back together and sold them back into circulation for students of the schools to use,” he said. “It begs the question: Why didn’t the schools just continue using them? Or better yet, why didn’t they give them to students directly?”
As for the reaction Henrico County saw for its iBooks in 2005? Bumstead gets it, based on what he sees in the modern day. For many buying these machines, the need for technology often outpaces their knowledge of what makes a good gadget for their given situation. While the technically inclined might find value in the dumpster, expectations need to be set when it comes to things like laptops with working webcams and functional Wi-Fi.
“People simply don’t know what they are buying; they are simply mesmerized by the Apple symbol,” he said. “And unfortunately at a time like this, that probably leads to them getting ripped off.”
I don’t talk about this much, but there was a brief period of my adult life where I didn’t have a working home computer. It was maybe about four or five months.
And the reason that it happened comes down to a known GPU fault in the iBook G4 I had at the time. The problem hit during the worst possible time: In early 2006, amid a transition period of my life, after I had left a bad roommate situation. I was broke, and I had recently moved halfway across the country, so I got rid of a bunch of stuff before I left town, including my old desktops. Student loan bills were starting to really hit for the first time. And while I had a good job in newspapers, it was simply going to take some time to raise the money I needed to replace the dang thing.
If I had technical knowledge at the time, I perhaps could have fixed it. But the laptop was second-hand and didn’t have AppleCare, and I was hundreds of miles from the nearest Apple Store. So, instead, I kind of had to live without it. I stayed longer hours at work to handle computing-related things, and went home, and just watched Stephen Colbert and the series finale of Arrested Development. (Which, famously, ran against the Winter Olympics.)
And because I was a sucker, when I finally saved up enough money, I bought the exact same machine—this time, however, with AppleCare.
I’m sure I joked about the iBook riots online in 2005. Heck, everyone did. Had this happened when Twitter was around, it potentially could have been a far bigger pop-culture moment than the footnote it became.
But I kind of look back at this time, knowing what I know about disparities and access, and I wonder if Henrico County—despite being visionaries around the role of technology in classrooms—realized after the fact how raw a deal it was giving to those in its community who were living without home access to modern technology.
It could have been a great moment. Instead, it was a disaster.

50 Moments That Defined Tech This Decade
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Discoveries and innovations aren’t new in the world of technology. But in the past decade — particularly between 2010 and 2019, we’ve seen an enormous number of technological reforms that have changed the way we live today. Developments such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) have emerged from merely being some laboratory projects and become an active part of our daily lives. The company is set to use its Azure cloud computing centres hosted in 140 countries to provide gaming to the masses. It works with phones and can enable controls through Xbox or PlayStation’s DualShock controller. Google also transformed its Project Stream in March this year and announced Stadia as its offering to take on xCloud.
49. Samsung Galaxy Fold debuted as the first major foldable smartphone (2019)
Samsung in February this year unveiled the Galaxy Fold with a flexible display that can transform the phone into a tablet. There is a hinge that helps folding the Samsung Galaxy Fold into half. Samsung has also provided its custom UI on top of Android 9 Pie to bring new experiences to the users. It’s not wrong if we say the Samsung Galaxy Fold is the world’s first foldable smartphone available to global consumers as Huawei did launch its Mate X to compete against the Galaxy Fold but is yet to bring it to the worldwide markets. Months ahead of the Galaxy Fold debut, Chinese startup Royole in November last year showcased the Royole Flexpai that it claims as the world’s first foldable phone, but it’s currently limited to China. That being said, the Galaxy Fold faced criticism initially for its fragile design that Samsung had claimed to have fixed to some extent.
50. ISRO launched Chandrayaan-2 to study lunar geology (2019)
In July this year, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the anticipated Chandrayaan-2 mission with an aim to study the variations in lunar surface composition and examine the distribution of lunar water. The second lunar exploration mission by the space agency was launched through a GSLV Mark III vehicle and included an orbiter, Vikram lander, and Pragyan rover. Although the spacecraft reached the moon’s orbit on August 20, the lander deviated from its planned trajectory and had lost communication. NASA released images of the impact site where the crash of the lunar lander purportedly took place before approaching the moon’s surface. Moreover, ISRO claimed that its own orbiter located the crashed lander on the lunar surface, though it’s yet to provide further details.

CANNES, FRANCE—As Lions Health wrapped up another year, attendees sifted their notes and pulled out a few common threads. Technology, for one, but not just for the sake of using a shiny new tool. Or as one Sanofi exec put it, "Technology in the service of creativity."
Marketing for good was another: aka, applying sharp communications brains to thorny public health problems. And then there were what Leigh Householder of Syneos Health called "secret messages," exemplified in one campaign using crossword puzzle clues to spread the word about elder abuse in a way abusive family members might not catch—but their puzzling seniors would.
Overall? It's a big world out there, but while appealing to global markets is key for pharma success, sometimes scaling up a creative local campaign is the way to really reach consumers and their doctors. Read on for more.
Tuesday
Doctors aren't robots. Forget the charts and graphs, sales reps. Lead with your heart instead. That’s the message from Attila Cansun, a chief marketing officer at the newly rebranded P&G Health. Adapting a consumer marketing framework dubbed LoveBrands, Cansun and his team use a similar evaluation-and-revamp for the company’s doctor relationships. Story
The trust tour. GW Pharmaceuticals' strategy for promoting its new cannabinoid drug Epidiolex to doctors sounded simple—earn their trust. But that's easier said than done, no thanks to Kim Kardashian and her CBD-themed baby shower. So the company decided to take physicians to the source, namely its massive marijuana greenhouse, and show them cannabis-derived drugs are the real deal. Story
Get out the tissues. In the U.S., when seasonal sneezes come on, there’s no mystery about what to do next: Go to the drugstore for allergy medication. But what if that decision weren’t automatic? For Sanofi, as it launched its drug Allegra over the counter in Brazil, the answer was a mobile, augmented-reality campaign that could outfit users with red noses and watery eyes, similar to a Snapchat filter. It even animated sneezes, complete with droplets on the phone screen. Story
Hemophilia, humor and a hipster host. A reality show about hemophilia? And it's a comedy? That would be Roche’s Genentech and ad agency 21 Gram’s new YouTube series called “Challenge Accepted.” Each 15-minute episode of the show, which premiered last week, features a different patient, coach and lesson targeting boys and young men with hemophilia. And it gets that lesson across using humor—and some magic tricks. Story
Monday
Big winner. It’s been a long three years since a pharma jury here handed out Grand Prix honors. But Monday night, GlaxoSmithKline and its ad agency McCann Health broke through with a mobile app called Breath of Life, used to detect chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in older adults in China. Eli Lilly, ViiV and Merck were among the other pharma winners. Story
No-ad advertising. Marketers need to think big. Like saving-the-world big. That’s the advice McCann Health’s global chief creative officer, Matt Eastwood, offered up to kick off the Cannes Lions Health confab Monday. And what that means to Eastwood is advertising that “may not look like advertising,” he said. “It’s advertising while doing good.” Story
New light on MS. Multiple sclerosis symptoms can be confusing: They differ person to person and even day to day for the same patients. Roche's Floodlight Open app aims to clear that confusion for individuals by gathering personal health data every day and delivering real-world evidence for broader understanding of the disease. Story
Procter & Gamble showed up for Cannes Lions Health—and no wonder. The consumer packaged goods giant recently bought Merck KGaA’s consumer health division and rebranded it as P&G Health. Now, with teams of brand managers and concept demos on display here, it's serving notice—at least to consumer healthcare companies—that it’s in play. Story
Sunday
Shorted shortlist? The Pharma Lions shortlist for 2019 lives up to its name. Just 31 entries cleared the finalist bar this year, down from 53 last year. But it’s still good news for the 12 multinational pharmas in the running—and for the pharma marketers looking to eye the industry’s best at Monday night’s awards. Story
Breakout scouts. As Cannes Lions Health kicked off its sixth year Monday, attendees were looking for some breakouts. As in breakthrough technology, creativity that breaks barriers, groundbreaking global ideas and a chance to finally break with the backhanded compliment that Lions Health work is “good for pharma.” Story
Escaping the same-same. Bartle Bogle Hegarty’s roster of literal A-list clients—Audi, Absolut and AstraZeneca—earns it center stage at Lions Health with a consumer-to-pharma creative crossover pitch. Hint? Brand differentiation is job one, and to do that, drugmakers need to pull cliché imagery out by the root. Story
Heard around the Palais
Winning outside the pharma and healthcare box. Johnson & Johnson and partners picked up the Grand Prix for Entertainment on Tuesday night for the film “5B.” The film about the nurses who founded and opened the first AIDS ward at San Francisco General Hospital, called Ward 5B in 1983 was picked up in May by Verizon for broader distribution and officially debuted June 14. “5B” was created by Oscar-nominated director Dan Krauss and Saville Productions, known for its branded ad and film work. Saville tweeted in May after Verizon picked up “5B”: “The film is an HIV/AIDS crisis doc, commissioned by Johnson & Johnson, & shows how brands can authentically get behind global issues.” The film also won a Lions Health & Wellness silver statue on Monday night.
Stand up for nontraditional creative. Getting the green light for a brand film targeted at physicians at a pharma company is not for the faint of heart. Even the best ideas face multiple hurdles. AstraZeneca’s Lions Health award-winning "The Attack" film from last year highlighted the risk of repeat heart attacks, but was "that close" to being killed, said Kyriakos Konstantinidis, global strategy director at AstraZeneca. That's what his boss told him later after winning four more global awards and industry impact, feedback and successes rolled in. It helped that Konstantinidis understood the vision that ad agency Havas Lynx brought with its ideas—his father had worked in the film industry and he grew up in and around it. Konstantinidis and Havas' perseverance not only led to the creation of "The Attack," but another new disease awareness film about cardiovascular risks around Type 2 diabetes that debuted recently. That patient-targeted film features a fisherman talking about the dangers of heart disease for Type 2 patients while his boat engine stalls, noting, "That's how dangerous Type 2 diabetes is. It can cause your heart, your engine, to fail." Konstantinidis urged the audience and pharma in general to take risks, albeit calculated ones with a strategy meets creativity foundation. "When you're working in the pharmaceutical industry which has a very conservative approach to these sort of ideas, and you have your colleagues and peers coming to you (after the campaign) to say, apart from congratulations, 'How did you do that? We want to copy that, we want to do the same brief. ... What is the direction I need to take internally to make this a success in order to get the buy in?' Then you know you have created a new area," he said.
Fighting fake news. Panelists from Johnson & Johnson, McCann Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tackled the thorny problem of combating disinformation about vaccines. "It won't be a TV campaign," said Seema Kumar, J&J's vice president for innovation in global health and science policy. Social media might play a role, but it's really peer-to-peer and face-to-face that's most important, the panelists decided. How to make that happen? "I'm challenging you," panel moderator Rajesh Mirchandani, chief communications officer of the UN Foundation, told the audience. In another session moderated by Conde Nast’s health chief Jen Mormile, Self editor in chief Carolyn Kylstra said their research found that while fake health news is not new—snake oil has been around a long time—it’s an issue because of social media and the rapid way disinformation now spreads, exacerbated by the lack of trust in authority figures. To combat it, Self is doubling down on health news editing, fact checking and vetting sources including celebrities. Meanwhile, co-panelist physician Esther Choo said doctors can do their part by going beyond traditional journal model of publish-and-done model. Today physicians need to follow up and make sure other scientists are misusing or misconstruing their work, she said.
VR for VR's sake. Too many pharma marketers are making the mistake of recruiting tech tools for jobs they can't do, or just using those tech tools poorly, said Sam Glassenberg, founder and CEO of LevelEx, which makes mobile games for physician training. For example, method-of-action presentations that used to be on big screens have moved into virtual reality. But zooming around a molecule in the virtual world while sitting still in the real one tends to make people nauseous. "The last thing you want a doctor to associate with your drug is nausea," Glassenberg said. The moral of the story is to use VR only when it's the only way to tell a particular story—and when you do, make it a spectator sport, he said.
Real-world evidence and technology are natural partners, said Alex Gilbert, head of partnerships at app developer Medopad, as he ticked off the ways his company’s working with life sciences companies such as Novartis to help collect the sort of patient data that can help drugmakers add new indications to existing drugs. “We’re now creating a living, breathing document of a patient," Gilbert said. “Your health record doesn’t have to be in the hospital. It’s here, created by you.”
Spending on real-world evidence has hit $1.48 billion, according to Simone Seymour, founder and CEO of the biometric textiles company Supa. Real-world evidence is “really hot right now” for personalizing products but “also for understanding how drugs are actually working.” Companies are tapping Supa’s tech—and its network of app users—to monitor and recruit patients for real-world evidence trials.
A GlaxoSmithKline toothpaste made to alleviate bleeding gums served as an example of why design should be at the heart of marketing in one session led by GSK's vice president of design and innovation Andrew Barraclough. "It's all about spitting blood," he noted, and blood imagery appeared on everything from the platelet-like motif on the toothpaste tube to the smartphone screen that started bloody and cleared from there. Then, in the Czech Republic, GSK flipped the idea to promote blood donations. "Don't spit blood, give blood" was the tagline for GSK's #bloodforgood campaign there.

Tumblr media

Long tail keywords may be very profitable to your own SEO strategy and narrow lower on the needs of particular customers by using descriptive lengthy tail keywords which can end up being very useful to boost traffic. One of the particular most important parts of the particular SEO is creating unique with ease with proper keywords. When deciding exactly what search topics to focus on and just how best to focus your SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION efforts, treating keyword querying as an investigative tool is where you will likely have the best results. To understand how SEO works to improve search engine rankings, we'll need to break it down a little. Many of the SEO methods we've been using for many years are still worth our marketing and advertising dollars — blogging, social press, and inbound marketing — by way of example. For years, links have got been the trust signal intended for search engines — one that will SEOs spent the most period on optimizing (and often manipulating). It makes sense therefore that will focusing on brand relevance plus prominence will result in position higher in local SEO. SEO provides never been about rankings just. SEO stands regarding seo. But this has a nice SEO advantage to boot: multimedia helps a person boost those user-interaction signals that will Google continues to be having to pay more attention to. I feel looking to rank with the key phrase online jobs but as the particular URL is long & the particular keyword is in the final associated with the URL, I am not really ranking on the first place even after my page and my SEO is more preferable than additional first 3 ranked sites. SEO is just about all about backlinks, right?
Tumblr media
This offpage SEO activity became immensely popular after Google's Gary Illyes revealed that a thriving community can boost SERP rankings immensely. For example, Copyblogger focuses on the keyword SEO copywriting” upon one of their landing web pages. In 2108, you will have at minimum five SEO trends no company can afford not to get advantage of. I agree with the particular point you made of making use of LSI keywords and long-form articles as part of the SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION strategy. Thinking associated with local search only as MyBusiness optimization may limit the possibilities businesses (especially local businesses) may have to earn SEO presence and traffic. Optimizing your SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION strategy, which includes site rate and content, to reach your own mobile customer will become even more important than ever in 2018. Other SEO ranking factors include: accessible URLs, domain age (older is generally better), page speed, mobile friendliness, business information, and technical SEO. How NBT and Weeve Are Solving the Scaling Issue of Ethereum
Though Bitcoin has garnered significant mainstream media attention over the past few months, Ethereum might become the cryptocurrency at the top of the heap in 2018.
CryptoDaily predicts that Ethereum’s value could exceed Bitcoin’s as early as 2018. The moment when a non-Bitcoin cryptocurrency surpasses Bitcoin’s value is popularly known in cryptocurrency circles as “The Flippening,” an event so anticipated that Flippening Watch is devoted purely to tracking its progress.
Ethereum has already experienced a higher number of transactions over 24 hours, higher 24-hour mining rewards, and a greater number of nodes. While its market cap, overall trading volume, and Google Trends measurements still lag behind Bitcoin, it seems clear that Ethereum is still on the rise.
Why is Ethereum approaching Bitcoin, which is often thought of in the popular imagination as the end-all and be-all of cryptocurrency? Ironically, Bitcoin’s popularity might be contributing to its demise: as more and more people start using it outside of the cryptocurrency community, transaction fees get higher (hitting an average of $28 in late 2017) and transaction times get longer. Higher usage is throwing Bitcoin’s scalability issues into sharp relief.
Launched in 2015, Ethereum is a blockchain-based platform that enables the construction of complex Smart Contracts and Distributed Applications (DApps). The platform runs on Ether tokens, which are both exchanged publicly like other cryptocurrencies and used inside the platform to build applications. Though Ethereum is technically a platform, not a cryptocurrency, inside its own ecosystem, the term has become a common signifier of the cryptocurrency in public exchanges. Ultimately, Bitcoin and Ethereum (or Ether tokens) were constructed for different purposes: one was meant to replace paper currency, while another was designed largely as fuel (or “gas”) for an application-building platform.
Bitcoin, obviously, is facing the question of scalability as increased usage drives longer and more expensive transactions. But Ethereum is also starting to face its own scalability issues. Its developers have proposed solutions, such as sharding or off-chain transactions, but because Ethereum is tied to a complex application ecosystem, scaling it is in some ways much more complicated than it is for Bitcoin.
NBT
Next Big Thing (or NBT) is an IoT and blockchain-based company incubator. NBT hosts entrepreneurs-in-residence who work out of their Berlin headquarters for three months to bring a viable business idea from a mere concept to a fully ready-to-launch business. Entrepreneurs have access to workspace, mentorship, and an enormous range of expertise, from technical to legal to prior hands-on business-launching experience. This ecosystem ensures that the lengthy process of developing a business, which often takes years, can be accomplished in only three months. NBT also assists with seed and first-round funding, as well as providing ongoing fundraising guidance.
Appropriately enough for an Internet of Things-based institution, NBT is the linchpin in an incredible network of innovation across Europe and beyond. NBT is recognized as a central Berlin hub in de:hub, Germany’s national digital hub initiative. Because their clients, partners, and entrepreneurs benefit from a broad range of perspectives and expertise, they can help new companies tackle pressing technical issues.
Weeve
Weeve is one of NBT’s many success stories. This company, founded by NBT participants Harald Zapp and Sebastian Gajek, was founded in recognition that the exploding number of networked devices across the globe have and will generate enormous amounts of valuable data. A networked car driving over a pothole, for example, captures the location of degraded roads, and buying that info might be substantially cheaper for road crews than trying to find potholes on their own. But the growth of IoT has also brought legitimate security and privacy concerns. If data is going to be transmitted, bought, and sold, then the people who generate that data need to know it’s happening securely.
Weeve is developing a blockchain-based solution to the problem of secure, private data transmission inside the Internet of Things. The Weeve platform relies on a Trusted Execution Environment to provide security guarantees. Perhaps most significantly, Weeve’s platform incorporates a newly designed TEE-MQTTS protocol that allows speedy, highly scalable processing. This means that the massive amount of data generated by IoT devices can actually be processed in blockchain form through the Weeve platform.
Final Thoughts
Cryptocurrency and Bitcoin have had their day in the mainstream news for their dramatic price fluctuations, but companies such as Weeve and NBT recognize that beyond financial headlines are incredibly transformative applications for blockchain technology. The Internet of Things is predicted to contain about 75 billion devices by 2025, generating an enormous amount of data that could help us run a better, more efficient society – if we can effectively and securely transmit such a huge volume. Companies such as Weeve are showing that blockchain can be transformed and used to tackle data needs such as IoT transactions.
