If you must have your characters monologue, can you at least give them a cat to monologue at?

Asian BL's and Short Format Mobile Dramas (the expansion of the Asian BL universe)
Look some of the short format, mobile dramas are actually entertaining to watch, even if they have crazy editing and some questionable acting, as well as storylines. So, I thought I just write up the synopsis of some of these:
PART ONE (NB: Not sure how many parts this will have)
Match Play (Korean)
Doha and Jaeyoon have a working relationship as idol and stuntman, however friendship blooms and when Doha wants to take it to the next level and duo have to decide if they work together as well as be together as boyfriends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can a Freeloader Make it as a secretary. (Japanese)
Shirihata is an unemployed kept man who recently broke-up with his girlfriend. He comes to a work interview as the secretary of a famous CEO Mr. Kuroda. As love between the pair blooms, the couple have to deal with an overzealous work colleague.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Secret of Male Students. (Korean)
Jiwon is able to read the minds of all his classmates, except the two-faced class president Siwoo. When the other starts to blackmail Jiwoo, the duo become intertwined, spending time together and sleeping with each other. However, there is a third party that likes Jiwoo, San-Ho his best friend and classmate being harassed by loan sharks. Also in the picture is an ex-classmate of Siwoo who calls him a murderer. Can the couple's love prevail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love in the Apocalypse (Korean)
The world is about to end in a week. Workaholic Mr. Park however believes in the 0.8 percentage chance that he'll survive, so still attends work. There he meets work colleague Nam. Nam is the complete opposite to Mr. Park and is carefree and just wants to live. Due to circumstances the two men start living together and gradually love blooms as the couple navigate complicated feelings at the end of days.

What's your favourite kbls?
Look at me getting to my asks months later like a real Tumblr BNF🤣. Thank you Nonny, for the question, and hopefully you're still interested in the answer! Here's my tops, in no specific order:
Anything by Hwang Da Seul (Where Your Eyes Linger, Blueming, To My Star/To My Star 2, Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo): This woman owns my entire soul. She nearly broke me with To My Star 2 and then finished the job with Taekwondo. I will watch anything she makes, and cry about it.
Long Time No See: They're assassins, they're lovers, they've tried to kill each other before. Amazing.
Just Friends?: Pre-stardom Lee Je Hoon and Yeon Woo Jin in a delightful little indie film about a man hoping to get some when he visits his military boyfriend and how his boyfriend's mom cockblocks him...on the surface. Underneath, so much of the pain of the closet, the joy of loving despite it, and the reality of the outside world piercing your bubble.
Semantic Error: An ACTUAL enemies-to-lovers romance set off by an amazing pair of performances. Sharply written and very fun.
You Make Me Dance: Full disclosure: the actual dancing is terrible, but the romance between a down-on-his-luck dancer and his loan shark was surprisingly compelling.
Roommates of Poongduck 302: Quite enjoyed this exploration of power dynamics shifting between work and home, where a man becomes his boss' landlord and they fall in love.
Sing My Crush: If I think too much about Han Baram and Im Hantae I might chew through my fist. The absolute sweetest slowburn story of a young singer/songwriter and the boy who insists on becoming his manager.
Choco Milk Shake: A beautiful meditation on loneliness, grief and deep abiding love, with a twist. I won't spoil it. Just watch it.
Unintentional Love Story/The Time of Fever: ULS is the main story, TOF is a prequel starring the side couple. The most kdrama of the KBLs IMO.
Love Tractor: Fun little show about a burnt out law student running away to the country, running into a brolic farm boy and triggering the farm boy's gay awakening.
Love Match: I really did not expect to like this one but it did some really interesting things. A bitter Betty disappointed by love decides he's only going to date, not have sex or commit. A sunshine boy at his work says 'fuck that'. Delight ensues.
Love Class 2: Skip the first one IMO and head straight for the sequel. 3-couple BL around a bunch of dudes in college together.
Our Dating Sim: Second chance romance of the century. Trust me.
A Shoulder to Cry On: It ends so absolutely weirdly but up until then I was invested. Interesting take on the bully romance, if you're into that.
The Eighth Sense: Korean/German bildungsroman-style drama about a country twink who moves to the big city for college and rather boldly pursues the Big Man On Campus who is sorta-kinda-but-maybe-not-entirely closeted. That's really Cliff notes, but there is so much here about the sour side of coming of age in modern Korean society and the pressures and expectations heaped on.
The New Employee: Age gap romance between a late-thirties-ish dude who is tired of being in these skreets and just wants to settle down, and the fresh-faced postgrad who is getting a later career start than usual.

Korean school violence dramas are always like:
see this poor girl? she's been beaten everyday and dragged across the classroom floor because her mother sells fish. Look at her, she can't afford a new uniform because the rich bullies have torn hers and now she's coming to school in sportswear. Her family is about to be thrown out and she's just watched her older sister sleep with a loan shark to keep the family's debt at bay. She can't read, can't eat, can't think because she's poor and the bullies are ruthless.
HOWEVER...
being rich isn't fun because... when the rich bully goes home, he has to sit at the huge, beautiful dining table and eat alone because his father is too busy to eat with him. uwu.

Yuri With Women Who Know They're Queer And Are Sexy About It
I'm really happy with this yuri manga rec list I made so I'm cross posting it here :D
Syrup Anthologies - these are short story collections, and each collection centers a different theme (work, forbidden, first time). As far as I remember, none of the stories feature characters totally ignorant of her queerness. I've read these ones myself: they're very good!
How Do We Relationship? - two college students are the only lesbians in their small town. Why not date each other? Will it ever work out?
Our Teachers are Dating! - this one is a more sweet romance, but two teachers date each other, to the cheers of their students.
Love Thy Neighbor - a spicy Korean webtoon about a college student sheltering an older woman on the run from loan sharks. Drama! Messed up relationship! Could be exactly what you're looking for.
Pulse - Thai webcomic about a heart surgeon who has sex purely for pleasure's sake, without any romantic emotion involved. That is, until she meets a certain someone....
If I Could Reach You - a high school student quickly figures out her sexuality when she falls for her brother's wife.
Does It Count If You Lose Your Virginity to an Android? - this one seems more like a straightforward erotica. A high powered office worker drunkenly orders an android maid online...except the android wants to do so much more than clean.
Kill Me Now - webtoon about a hitwoman who kills a mark and "rescues" his daughter, promising the daughter that she can avenge her father when she's older. The daughter grows up and decides to emphasize the "lust" part of bloodlust. Will this toxic love overcome the cycle of revenge?

I am enjoying Heartbeat a lot. Which kinda led me down to Korean vampire dramas a little bit. I didn't realize this before but there are quite a few Korean vampire dramas.
Most of them are mystery, murder, quite serious toned (Scholar who walks the night, Blood etc). But I want to recommend something that's not so serious and lots of laughs
➡️ Hello, Francesca
Tumblr media
Romania, 2005. One of the last vampire families on earth decides to disguise themselves and live among humans until "the glory of their empire" revives. They are sent to different places all over the world that are considered safe by their leader. However, a group of vampires takes the wrong ship and happens to come to Korea. On board, they run into a timid and unlucky man Du Il. One of the vampires bites him by mistake, and he becomes one of them. They promise Du Il that they will return him to a human on the day when their leader comes to find them. He doesn't have any other choice but to live with them. They are disguised as a family of five and start new lives in Seoul.
Did they directly copy pasted a few scenes from Van Helsing at the beginning? Probably. Hello Francesca, is most likely the first vampire sitcom from Korea I have seen. And it was hilarious. You will see a lot of famous faces, who were back then basically babies. This came out in 2005, so unfortunately the available res are pretty low.
➡️ Vampire Idol
Tumblr media
A naive vampire prince struggles to become a global pop idol in this melodramatic youth sitcom. Prince Vampire has to navigate the shark-infested waters of mundane adolescence, all in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of fame and glory.
I mean! Look at that poster. Look at those vampires! Although neither Lee Soo Hyuk or Kim Woo Bin was the prince. But Lee Soo Hyuk as a vampire .... so you already know what you are about to get 🥵
If you don't mind the low res and these being made 15-20 years ago, definitely check them out a bit.

this shapeshifting vessel is a lie
hi and welcome to my corner of the internet. this blog is still under construction until I can add my about page ( did you know that you have to personally ask support to be allowed to use a page code with javascript in it? :)) well, you do now ) so beware of the construction tape!
I'm Autumn or Faon, I use they/them pronouns and I was born '95. ticked about all the boxes on the queer registration form and I'm currently in a queerplatonic poly relationship. central european & white. future linguistics & politics student, and plant parent. I really adore vampires and I write original and fan fiction, as well as poetry. I speak german and english, and I'm studying french, korean, japanese and finnish. lover of bats, snakes, horsies, deer and cats, as well as sharks. 🦈 I sometimes draw cat ears or fangs onto idols and actors ( see: my icon ), if you'd like me to make you an icon, drop me a DM.
my hyperfixations and interests change over time — yes, it was a phase, mom! name a constant state of being, mom! — and I change my username every two or so years. currently I'm really into the quantum leap spin-off, the motherland: fort salem show, and I'm watching a couple of k-dramas and such at the side. I play baldur's gate 3, stardew valley and control, but also 2064: read only memories.
I was very active in the shadowhunters and the dragon age fandom as well an 00q shipper. I will reblog every single gif of spirit - stallion of the cimarron, it's my childhood movie;; also, Jin Oshiro from STRAY (2019) deserved better, thank you for your attention.
you may know me as leafmiilk, taehdenveri, fliederfuchs or thetevinterelf — and most recently @catboy-jaebeom ! 🌺
tumblr veteran and survivor of the mishapocalypse. I've been renting this space ( occupying, maybe, rather? skjsdlkgs it's not like I pay rent ) since 2012, and trust me when I say: this website is a hellsite, but it's our hellsite, so, I'll stay until the last person switches off the lights, probably. >< a lot of other social media networks just never grew on me quite like tumblr.
I have two sideblogs worth noting: @splittergheist, my writing blog where I post short stories and poems irregularly, and my secret and private miscecanis / omegaverse blog ( a lot more interested in the world-building, concept and lifestyle than the smut, but no hate! ) that I may give out if you ask nicely and privately. also, if you're interested in some tumblr rp, you can message me as well, I have an OC blog for that. 🐰
that said, I tag my posts extensively, so if you need me to tag something, you can shoot me an ask and I'll try to tag specific things for you! please be nice in my inbox or I'll simply delete your ask and block you. 💛 oftentimes I'll message you privately when you send me an ask that doesn't seem like it should be answered publicly ( unless you've sent it on anon ofc ) and while I do answer tag games, I'm too anxious to tag ppl myself unless we're like super close, sorry ><
I track #faon.tagged. if you make ( especially kpop ) content you think I'd like ( itzy, got7, nct & wayv but especially ten, xiaojun and yuta, red velvet, shinee, svt but especially joshua, mingyu and dk, skz but especially hyujin and felix, but also others! ) you can use this tag, I'm always happy to reblog pretty gifs and support you guys, you're the backbone of our and any community.
relevant kpop stuff can be found under the cut, as well as some 'reviews' my lovely mutuals wrote for me ( if you like to leave a review, hit me up in my DMs! ) thank u, ily 💚🌼
and thank you everyone else for reading this, may your days be bright, I think we could all use that at the moment;; I'd super love new ppl to talk to ( pls have your age or an approximate in your bio! while I'm fine with talking to minors, I'd like to know beforehand if I do ), so message me!!

@meant-to-be-a-hero wrote on november 22nd:
Shall I compare Autumn's blog to a summer's day? I shall not, because I am not a hack. Equal parts language jokes, kpop boys (and girls, but I don't look at those) and #bitter millennial blogging, there's something for everyone here at Autumn's blog. They are also one of the few people who still write funky things in the tags, a true dying breed on Tumblr. I feel like I'm reviewing a restaurant or something. Either way, click follow, thank me later, because you will. It's a good blog, Bront.

❛ i'm not drunk enough for this. ❜
& @auburniivenus ! Substory unlocked: A DREAMY ESCAPE.
Tumblr media
❝ Oh, come on, Hime-chan! I know the title doesn't show it, but the movie is actually good! ❞ It's the first time they're going to the movies together, so Ichiban did his best to pick something he thinks they both will enjoy. He's already seen all the movies in the Seagull Cinema collection, but that doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy re-watching them with people who've never heard of them before.
Choosing the movie has been a challenge, to say at least. He asked others for advice, and although RoboCook and Shark Vacation seemed to be pretty popular among the guys, a certain barmaid has been pretty adamant about letting him know what a bad idea that was. Fine! Ichiban picked something else.
❝ Wanna hear a fun fact about the movie? I've actually met the guy who plays the male lead! ❞ Of course, he's not going to bring up the fact that II was drinking himself to death back then. Things worked out in the end, and that's all that matters. ❝ He's a cool dude! ❞ Yeah, let's leave it at that. Maybe he should check up on him one of these days, only to make sure things aren't too overwhelming.
The movie starts, and just like before, Ichiban does his best to pay attention to what's happening on screen. The last thing he wants is to fall asleep when he's the one who asked Inoue to spend time with him in the first place. Each time he's tempted to make a funny comment in regard to what's happening on screen, he closes his mouth, too afraid he might actually spoil the ending.
Halfway through the movie, he forgets who's who again. Why is the plot of every Korean drama so damn complicated? Ichiban tries to keep himself awake, by doing what he does each time he finds himself in these situations: daydreaming. Sure, it wouldn't make sense to anyone else, but the technique has never failed him in the past. All he has to do is to imagine he's stopping the sheep before they get to him.
He thinks he's doing a pretty decent job, but the second he opens his eyes, the credits are rolling. ❝ Huh? Hold on, don't tell me I fell asleep! ❞ Not only that, but it looks like he's been using Inoue's shoulder as a pillow. Well, that's embarrassing. ❝ Why didn't you wake me up? That has to be uncomfortable... ❞ He's never watching a movie again without drinking an energy drink in advance.
❝ Did you enjoy the movie, at least? ❞

Colors of Another Sky: Mending a Nation Follow-up
Some neat comments on that last bit! There were so many good questions I thought I’d put together a lengthy reply here, because it’s all connected and things get complicated.
First, let me give you the framework I’m building all of these plans off of. And that’s Jason Finn, retired historian (ahem encouraged to quit), 58, of Irish, Scots-Irish, and general American mutt extraction, who is an expert in Tokugawa-era Japan and a hobbyist in the Little Ice Age. None of this makes him any kind of expert on Joseon-era Korea.
(Which is just as well, because they’ve had a few centuries of oddly divergent history anyway.)
Jason does have a lot of patchy info on this time in Korea as it intersected with Japan (a major trading partner) and as the whole area was affected by the Little Ice Age (floods, frosts, baking heatwaves, droughts, dragons, locusts, horrible crop failures all over the place).
Outside of that, before he took this little trip, he tried to get down a basic vocabulary of modern Korean, plus all the hangul characters. And because he is from Florida he made sure he learned the word for shark, hoping he’d never have to use it. Oops.
Sure, he brought plenty of books... on an e-reader. Physical books are heavy. The e-reader may or may not be recoverable. Until he knows that he’s got maybe two physical books on Korea besides the dictionary, and they will be of limited use. He also has an (ahem, almost) fourteen-year-old fan of k-dramas.
...I can hear you facepalming from here. Go ahead and laugh. Even Jason thinks it’s kind of funny.
So. A bunch of points, in no particular order.
First, cotton is at this point in time already a major crop and fabric through the entire peninsula. Almost everybody wears cotton; even some yangban, in the summer. Though they tend to wear more ramie and linen.
So my best guess is that anything that made growing and harvesting cotton easier (not just the gin, there’s getting better seed germination, killing pests, keeping the soil fertile - a host of things!) would result in not more effort thrown into cotton, but more into growing silk. Everyone wants silk.
Silk-raising takes a lot of skill and care, to the point it pretty much requires workers get decent food, clothing, and rest. Or your whole crop of silkworms is ruined. Add that to, a large part of the thing about yangban owning nobi was not how much work they could get out of them, but the status of owning that many nobi. They have no need to work people into the ground, if they can make more profit setting nobi to other tasks.
...Speaking of silk, once Jason has a grip on where and when he is (and gets over the panic), he’s going to come up with a plan to rescue a particular town of silk workers in China. Famines are on schedule to wipe them out, and the few that in our timeline survived to flee to other regions couldn’t take their large and heavy looms. An entire style was lost.
While we’re on the subject of weaving.... powered looms and spinning machines were some of the first serious impetus for industrialization, often starting with water power. A steam engine can be put in a wider variety of places to be useful, but it requires fuel. Fuel is in short supply! Most of that available on the Korean Peninsula is wood, or charcoal. I’ll need to do research into nearby regions, but I can assure you Jason would have absolutely no clue where to look for fossil fuels outside of “I know Japan mines them, and that’s a bit far to ship....”
The existence of magic and how it works does allow for the possibility of steam engines. But it’ll take some creativity. And maybe a few booms.
About mass armies taking over versus small elite armies... I hate to break it to whoever didn’t know this, but Northeast Asia has had mass armies going at it since well before 600 A.D. The Imjin War involved lots and lots of gunfire!
Low interest loans to farmers would help. Interest could go up to something like 50% in this time and place, and bankruptcy doesn’t exist. Hence people ending up having to sell themselves to cover debts.
...And this circles back around to part of why I made Jason Irish. He has a personal historical connection to bad agriculture, bad leadership, bad debts, the horrible consequences of the Little Ice Age on food production (the potato blight was one), and people having to flee a system that would not let them pick themselves up and try again. He’s planning to make things better.
And yes, that’s going to include translating various concepts. The ones in the Declaration of Independence are going to be shocking....
As far as a reading list goes, I started from Everyday life in Joseon-Era Korea (ed. Michael D. Shin), worked my way through the Wikipedia bits on nobi, and started searching outward across the internet by way of people blogging on sageuks (historical k-dramas) and open access articles on JSTOR about Joseon, the Imjin War, and nobi. (thetalkingcupboard.com has a lot of good stuff on Joseon history and cultural setting.)

Jacob Elordi plays gay in racy 50s queer drama On Swift Horses

Jacob Elordi plays gay in racy 50s queer drama On Swift Horses
Aussie Jacob Elordi and his co-star Diego Calva share several steamy sex scenes in an intriguing 1950s gay drama On Swift Horses, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
In the film from Fellow Travelers director Daniel Minahan, Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her husband Lee (Will Poulter) are beginning a new life after Lee returns from the Korean War.
But their suburban American dream is upended by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic younger brother, card shark Julius (Jacob Elordi).
Julius meets Muriel for the first time shirtless, sprawled over the hood of his pickup truck.
As the erotically-charged film unfurls, Muriel finds herself questioning what she wants and engages in a steamy affair with a bohemian neighbour named Sandra (Sasha Calle).
Meanwhile, drifter Julius heads for Las Vegas and starts having his own love affair with a fellow gambler Henry (Babylon hunk Diego Calva).

Plenty of sex scenes in On Swift Horses
The reviews for the film are out after On Swift Horses’ premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Variety confirms that the film features “plenty” of steamy sex scenes between Jacob Elordi and Diego Calva’s characters, as well as scenes of “compulsive gambling, rib-cracking gangsters and grifters, underground gay bars and urban horse riding.”
On Swift Horses is directed by Daniel Minahan, who directed the first two episodes of last year’s brilliant limited series Fellow Travelers.
He said at the festival, per Variety, that the story offers “a re-imagining of the American dream, except through a queer lens.”
The film is based on a novel by Shannon Pufahl, which has won lesbian fiction awards.
Daniel Minahan said the book has an optimistic tone, rather than a relentlessly tragic story.
“She made a story about people who were hiding themselves, people who were watching, people who were exploring and trying to find themselves, and they end up connecting,” he said.
“It’s not a tragic ending to this story. It ends on a note of hope. That was important to us all along.”

Movies I watched this week (Year 4, week 8)
"Rudy calls me The Queen Of Auschwitz"...
After waiting for many months, I finally had a chance to watch Jonathan Glazer's transcendental The Zone of Interest. It's the most spine-chilling horror film I've ever seen, and I'll bet it will grow to become one of the greatest films of all time.
Making art about genocide is nearly impossible. Few Holocaust movies were able to tackle the topic honorably (Claude Lanzmann's epic Shoah', and Alain Resnais's 'Night and fog', both documentaries). But fictional dramas about concentration camps and Nazism are usually an affront against humanity. This one is different: Restraint, oppressive to the bone, ambient, extraordinarily disturbing. 9/10.
🍿
2 with Swedish actress Lena Olin:
🍿 Another film about the holocaust. One life is the directorial feature film debut of James Hawes, who directed two of my favorite 'Black Mirror' episodes ('Hated in the nation' and 'Smithereens'). Anthony Hopkins plays Nicholas Winton, who saved the lives of 699 Czech children by transferring them to England, just before the beginning of World War 2.
Watching Hopkins is always a delight, but unfortunately much of the film is a historical flash-back, a genre I dislike in principle. But even as much as I can't stand the period posturing and sub-par acting in the flash-back, the pathos and manipulation used here were so effective, it left me in tears for most of the film. 8/10.
🍿 The Adventures of Picasso is a Swedish surrealist comedy, very much in a 1970's absurdist style. Including a few lovely scenes (A dubbed Rossini duet, violinist Henri Rousseau ascending to heaven to the tune of 'I dream of 'Jenny', an excessive cauliflower farting performance) among mostly low-brow and stereotypical caricatures. Woody Allen did it better in 'Midnight in Paris'. 2/10.
🍿
And a third movie about related topic, Hitler Lives - Wow! A virulent anti-German propaganda film, originally written by Dr. Seuss and directed by Frank Capra, but which was remade by new director Don Siegel, and even went on to win the 1945 Oscar. Commissioned by the War Department, it was so over the top, that even George Patton walked out of the screening for top military brass, calling it 'Bullshit'.
['Today I learnt' that Don Siegel directed his first two movies in 1945, this and 'Star in the Night', and both of them won the Oscars, one for Short drama, and one for Short documentary!]
🍿
River, my second charming comedy by Japanese director Junta Yamaguchi (after his original 'Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes'). Like the previous one, it's a quirky "2 minute time loop" story, where every 2 minutes, time rewinds and everyone returns to where they were before. It takes some getting used to, but it's more relaxed [maybe because the location is a traditional inn, 'Ryokan', in a beautiful rural area]. The dozen participants adjust their responses to the Loop, and learn to behave accordingly. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
🍿
2 Korean police thrillers:
🍿 Cold eyes is about a team of surveillance officers tracking a gang of highly-sophisticated criminals. Excellent fast-action, cat and mouse plot (with improbable tech). 6/10.
🍿 The Outlaws is a fast action, brutal story of a gang war in seedy Chinatown in Seoul. Tough as nails and hard hitting, the captain in charge of the investigation goes against one of the most ruthless screen villains I've ever seen, a loan shark who likes to chop people's hands off. Lead officer Ma Dong Seok is relentless and uncompromising, and with the most powerful knock-out punches. The all-out brawl at the airport bathroom executed as well as the fight scenes from 'True Lies' and 'Terminator 2'.
The film was a big success in Korea, and they already made 3 sequels to it. 8/10 - My most entertaining surprise film of the week!
🍿
"Something is rotten in the State of Denmark".
Laurence Olivier's brilliant adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, the first British film to win the Oscar for 'Best Picture'. It got everything: A son avenging the murder of his father, a ghost story, incest and madness, suicide, poetry, politics of the day, as well as stunning photography in German Expressionist style. Also, a 'foppish courtier', tight tights for the men and giant protruding codpieces.
I wish I was much more versed with Elizabethan English, so that I could enjoy it even more.
🍿
Marlene Dietrich as a conniving murderess X 2:
🍿 First watch: Witness for the Prosecution, a terrific Billy Wilder drama with Charles Laughton and Marlene Dietrich, and with Tyrone Power in his final role. My dislike for pompous courtroom dramas was surpassed by the wit and fluidity of the Agatha Christie story. 8/10.
🍿 The 1950 Stage Fright was a mediocre Hitchcock Noir, with a similar set up, featuring a conspiring, duplicitous Marlene Dietrich as a remorseless co-conspirator to a murder. Not as engaging, or as staged. The most memorable performance in it was the 'Laziest Gal in Town' scene, which was parodied so well by Madeline Kahn. 3/10.
🍿
Re-watching 'Singing in the rain' X 2:
🍿 Another frequent re-watch: Nancy Meyers perfect feel-good hug, The intern. Meyers directed only 7 movies, but wrote nearly 20 romantic blockbusters. She's a superb screenwriter, and this is a marvelously-constructed bonbon. De Nero is super cute, and even Anne Hathaway is wonderful here. The relationship between them develops in stages so well. And it culminates with the heart-warming You Were Meant for Me scene at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. 10/10.
It's amusing to think how different this movie will be if Michael Caine and Tina Fey (or Reese Witherspoon) would play in it, as originally planned. That would actually be a good project for a 2026 A.I. "Alternative Version" re-make! ♻️
/ Female Director
🍿 So I had to watch Singing in the rain again. If there ever was a perfect musical, this is it. There isn't much I can say that hadn't been said before many times, so here:
The 'You were meant for me' scene which is the emotional center of the movie, happens (as it often does in well-timed Hollywood classics) at the 48:25 mark, precisely one hour before the end.
Gene Kelly wears this ridiculously-giant white chapeau. I don't even know what it's called.
The musical numbers are composed of mostly very long shots, with few, nearly invisible, cuts!
Debbie Reynolds was only 19 when she was cast as Kathy Selden.
And, Clockwork Orange's Alex DeLarge definitely altered forever any connotation to the beauty of 'just singing and dancing in the rain'...
10/10 - will watch again. ♻️
🍿
Once Within a Time is Godfrey Reggio's 8th experimental feature. Like his famous Koyaanisqatsi trilogy, it's an abstract non-linear montage, but this time with a different element of story-telling, that of children watching today's world disintegrate.
With a Philip Glass score (once again), exec-produced by Steven Soderbergh and with a cameo by Mike Tyson (?). It's a psychedelic, surreal trip, with animated dreamscapes, like La Planète sauvage on digital Psilocybin. 5/10.
🍿
"Today I learnt" about Stig Anderson, "The fifth ABBA". He was their promoter, manager, lyricist and manager. Stikkan is a new Swedish documentary about one of the most fascinating and influential people of Swedish music. (Even though the narrator has a very irritating intonation!).
🍿
"Obviously, Jesse is Tom and we're all Greg's"...
From Southbank Central, A fascinating panel discussion with Jesse Armstrong and four other brilliant writers of 'Succession' on September 15, 2023. 8/10.
And just to follow up, I revisited the masterful 'Pilot' episode, Celebration. Directed by Adam McKay, it introduced all the unpleasant main characters in such a way that one is being lured to obsessively follow them for 40 additional hours. It's also obvious from the very first viewing of Kendall Roy, with his sloped shoulders and forlorn sad-dog looks, that he is a 'Loser' who'll never be able to fill his father's big shoes. 10/10. ♻️
🍿
"I like your hairstyle... I like your polyester look"...
When Saturday night fever first opened in the 70's, I was a film snob and refused to see it. After stumbling upon the iconic opening scene today, I though I'll give it a shot. But Tony Manero still was a strutting, empty-headed, raping asshole, and the rest was not for me either. "Rocky but for Disco"? I saw Rocky recently and it was a great story. This was a ridiculous, sexist, stereotypical chauvinist, and pathetic ride. And was there a Ron Jeremy cameo? 1/10.
🍿
“I’ll be watching you, al-jazeera..”
Where do I even start? Poultrygeist, Night of the Chicken Dead is a piece of low-budget Troma schlock full of absurd, tongue-in-cheek body-fluid gore, the kind of shitshow I usually avoid. I thought I'll be able to see how bad can it really be, but after another explosive diarrhea gross-out scene that lasted for 2 or 3 minutes, I had to give it a permanent pass. 'Bye, Lloyd Kaufman. 1/10 - didn't finish.
🍿
(My complete movie list is here)
