shape of light
20.09.18
Gallery vist to the tate modern to see the exerbision ‘The Shape of Light ‘.I was a bit worried that I would not be able to find the meeting place, but one of my class mates offered to meet me to ensure that I got there ok. As I was part of the 2nd group to go into the ‘shape of light’, my group went into the clocks recording. it took me around ten minutes to realise that it was actually running in real time, How clever !!!! Someonhas actually watched all that footage and managed to link it all up to make something for 24 hoursthat follows as a story !! I will at some point go back to see some more of this amazing piece of work
The shape of light was a very intresting inspiring exerbision, some of the artist I had come across before and seen some of the work before. There were lots of artist that were new to me. Paul Strand, Porch Shadows, Peter Keetman, steel pipes were ones that stood outto me, but I also enjoyed Walter Peterhans, Thomas Farkas. Bill Brandt who I have come across many times Bodies was intresting. I do like contempery black and white images that show good shadows and contrast.

🎭 - How does your muse handle their emotions? Do they bottle them up or pour them out as soon as they start to feel?
Thought-Provoking Headcanon Meme || Accepting
Aisu tends to bottle up negative emotions until it boils over. Usually, this is when she goes on long jobs or monster killing jobs to let off steam without having to be vulnerable in the guild.

SHAPE OF LIGHT
100 Years of Photography and Abstract Art
Write a reflection on what you saw today: Which methodology/ies could you use to analyse images from the exhibition?
The Shape of Light: 100 Years of Photography and Abstract Art exhibition at the Tate Modern gallery helped me to see the connections between photography, painting, and sculpture within the abstract movement of the last hundred years. There were twelve rooms of displays divided by different subjects such as optical effects, subjectivity and expression, finding form, drawing with light or contemporary abstraction.
The curators of the exhibition aimed to display certain works together so the viewer could see a close relation between photography and painting; for example Marta Hoepffner’s photographs, Homage to Kandinsky 1937, was made under the influence of Wassily Kandinsky's painting Swinging 1925; a different example showed Joan Miro’s painting, titled Painting from 1927, which was inspired by Jaroslav Rossler’s photograph Light Well, Prague Portfolio 4 1923-4. These examples are exhibited to demonstrate the mutually beneficial correspondence between the two mediums of photography and painting within abstract art.

JOAN MIRó

Tempera and oil paint on canvas.
A second aim was to show the photographic response to the development of abstract art over the last century.
However the amount of art work shown at the exhibition is enough to give the viewer a headache. Many names are consistently repeated through the rooms and there is not much text to explain why, for instance, this photo was chosen or what it represents. Sometimes I could not even work out which caption belonged to which photograph. Across the twelve rooms I began to believe that some of the works hung together were almost put up randomly with very loose connections. The selection of work could have also included more examples of sculpture as painting and sculpture were both considered as a core of abstract art. For example Andre Kertesz’s Distortions could be displayed alongside the work of Hans Arp or Henry Moore who were sculpture artist active around the same times.

After long walk through nearly all black and white visual images the last couple of rooms had more color. By the exit I was attacked by two enormous black and white photograms made by Thomas Ruff, “new generation” photograms. Two monsters named as digital files r.phg.07 (240x185) and phg.10 (240x185) done in 3-D software were bigger than human being size, . I will never understand why some artists love showing ‘the biggest’. As Ruff said in Aperture interview: ‘First of all, I wanted to break the world record of the size for the photogram!’ (Summer 2013, Aperture). This mayor exhibition should be visited more than once to scoop the knowledge about Abstract Art and its mediums.

The right choice of methodologies to analyse the visual images depends on interest of researcher and what is she/he looking for. The researcher could be anyone. In my own research on this major exhibition I will use methodologies such as:
Art theory and Art History and art movements in twentieth century (Art movements: Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, Conceptual art, etc.). I will be looking for answers about how photography moved towards abstraction, how sits in history of abstract art. What is abstract art etc.
Photo theory: semiotics, camera-less technique;
Ontology in Philosophy of Photography
History - Cold War international relations, why certain art movements were born.

SHAPE OF LIGHT
Ellsworth Kelly, 1923-2015
American Artist Ellsworth Kelly is known for his paintings characterised by large areas of single colour with sharp edges. Kelly’s minimalist paintings transform compositions observed in the world around us. He applied this same approach to photography, surveying the landscape for volumes and shapes creates by light and shadow. Kelly found compositions in the light cast from doorways and street lamps, or the contrast produced by different materials.
This work displays a response to the theme of minimalist. Minimalism claims that art should have its own reality and not be an imitation of anything else. Minimalist art make no attempt to represent the outside world, their experiences or emotions. They want the viewer to respond only to what is in front of them. These photographs show their engagement with the aesthetic simplicity of minimalist art, presenting carefully selected volumes, shapes and lines.
