Players to Watch in WSL 21/22
Arsenal - Vivianne Miedema
Last Season:
Goals - 18, Assists - 5, Shots - 111
I don’t think I really need to explain this one
Aston Villa - Shania Hayles
Last Season:
Goals - 2, Assists - 1
Scoring 2 goals last season would put her as Villa’s second top scorer and I think there could be potential for her to get more this season.
Birmingham City - Jade Pennock
Pennock joins Birmingham from Sheffield United. She had a fairly decent scoring record from what I can find (FAWC stats are unfortunately hard to find). Birmingham’s squad doesn’t give much hope and having lost Claudia Walker, she has a big role to fill.
Brighton and Hove Albion - Lee Geum-min
Last Season:
Goals - 3
At the tail end of last season Lee scored some great goals, if she can keep that up Brighton could be a good watch. Unfortunately Brighton’s consistency issues may mean that she not have many chances to show her skill.
Chelsea - Fran Kirby
Last Season:
Goals - 16, Assists - 11, Joint top in assists
I don’t think this needs any explanation either.
Everton - Anna Anvegård
Back in 2020 she managed 16 goals in 22 appearances if she can get similar form she could be important for Everton, who’s top scorer only managed 6 goals last season.
Leicester City - Natasha Flint
Last Season:
Goals - 17, Leicester’s top scorer
As the Leicester’s goal boat winner last year they probably have hope that she can continue her form from the FAWC. The gap between the leagues is not small but I think there can be hope that she won’t disappoint too much.
Manchester City - Bunny Shaw
Last Season (Division 1 Feminine):
Goals - 22, Assists - 7, Top Scorer
Manchester United - Alessia Russo
Last Season:
Goals - 3, Assists - 2
Despite only playing in 4 games last season due to injury, Russo managed 3 goals and 2 assists which if she can come back with similar form could easily put her in the top scorer race this season.
West Ham - Claudia Walker
Last Season:
Goals - 5
A third of Birmingham City’s goals last season were scored by Walker and as West Ham have lost several of their scoring players she is a good signing by the club.

13 players from the FA Women’s Championship title winning squad have committed to the club for the upcoming campaign.
Homegrown players Asmita Ale, Elisha N’Dow, Jodie Hutton, Amy West, Shania Hayles and Emma Follis will all be representing Villa in the top flight.
Sian Rogers, Nat Haigh, Ella Franklin, Nadine Hanssen, Sophie Haywood, Emily Syme and Marisa Ewers join them in Gemma Davies’ squad for the 20/21 season.
Head Coach Davies is delighted to have secured their services for the new season.
She said: “With the players we’ve retained, we have the foundations for an exciting, talented and dedicated squad.
“This group were part of something special and I know they’re keen to achieve much more in a claret and blue shirt.
“As a club, we place a strong emphasis on our homegrown players, so it’s great that we will have so many playing in the Super League next season.”

Note
Stop with this Gemma Davison slander, she also started for Villa. Also Shania Hayles and I think a couple other first team players. These are absolutely not all academy players.
anon who said 10 academy players fooled me! I just believe what you say, I already have two games on at the same time, don't have time for Villa too

Portuguese flavour as Diana Silva joins Aston Villa Women
_________
Aston Villa Women have looked to replace the goals scored by Melissa Johnson in the Women’s Championship for their upcoming Women’s Super League season by signing Portugal International Diana Silva.
She becomes the first non-domestic signing of the season, moving from Sporting Clube Portugal Femenino, a side who have hit the headlines in recent years for their high-scoring games, with results ranging from 5-0, 8-0 and even 17-0 in recent seasons.
The 25-year-old has been in Women’s Football for eleven years, playing for Atlético Ouriense’s boys team before being promoted straight into their Women’s side. She scored 89 goals in 124 appearances.
From there, Silva has also spent time at Clube de Albergaria, where she scored 19 in 24, and most recently has spent four years at Sporting CP, scoring 19 in 38 appearances and winning the Campeonato Nacional de Futebol Femenino in her first year with the club.
Sporting director Eniola Aluko has said she is ‘delighted’ to sign Diana Silva for Aston Villa Women, labelling her as an “exciting, pacy, skillful goalscoring forward – and a leader for her national team”.
Diana Silva has represented her national side at Under 19 level and senior level, amassing over 60 appearances at both levels and scoring over 18 goals.
With a reputation for scoring goals, she will pose regular competition for remaining forward Shania Hayles, whilst bringing the experience of International and UEFA Women’s Champions League football to a side who are relatively inexperienced in the top level of Women’s Football.
Silva, speaking to club media stated that she is ‘relishing’ the chance to play against some of the best players in the world.
“I wanted to take a new step in my career and do something different.
I want to improve as a player and person, and Villa seemed like a very good opportunity.
I have never been outside of Portugal, so it’s a big step for me.
I’ve achieved a couple of trophies with Sporting – and I hope to conquer more.”
She has also admitted that the side will look competitive heading into the new season, and thinks that the new signings that the club have made are ‘encouraging’.
On the subject of her new signing, Head Coach Gemma Davies expressed that the club had been monitoring Silva since before lockdown:
“We’re really excited she’s finally an Aston Villa player.
We’ve picked up a young talent who’s been doing very well with her club and national team – and scoring goals.”
And goals are exactly what Aston Villa Women will need after the departure of Melissa Johnson just a few weeks ago.

Man City comeback win ends Blues' 100% start in WSL - highlights & report
Media playback is not supported on this device
Manchester City staged a spirited second-half comeback from 2-0 down to end Birmingham City’s 100% winning start in the Women’s Super League.
Blues led with a bizarre own goal as Abbie McManus’ 50-yard backpass caught out visiting goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck.
Meaghan Sergeant’s header made it 2-0 after half-time.
Caroline Weir’s deflected effort and Nikita Parris’ low finish drew Man City level before Tessa Wullaert’s deflected strike completed the turnaround.
Relive Manchester City’s victory over Birmingham[1]
The victory came just four days after Manchester City’s early exit from the Women’s Champions League at the hands of Spanish title holders Atletico Madrid.
And, when 2-0 down after 49 minutes, Nick Cushing’s side had appeared set to add to their disappointing week.
But their three goals in the space of 19 minutes stunned an otherwise impressive Birmingham, who had won all of their previous three league games this term by a 1-0 margin.
Having started the day level with Arsenal – and with the Gunners not playing on Sunday – a draw would have sent the hosts top of the table, and they nearly equalised late on when Lucy Staniforth struck the post.
But the visitors, who also hit the woodwork themselves with Weir’s curling second-half free-kick and had seen Parris’ close-range effort cleared off the line by Staniforth in the first half, were thrilled as their dramatic second win of the WSL campaign kept up their unbeaten start.
Birmingham City boss Marc Skinner:
“I’m disappointed in the result obviously, but more the performance. We need to be more mature in controlling the game once you’re up in it. That’s something we’ll definitely work on.
“I have very, very high standards and I still don’t think we met them. Even though we went 2-0 up, it was a fortunate goal.
“I want to win things. It’s my nature. We’re competitive and we’re ambitious. This will hurt, but it’ll make us stronger for the next game.”
Manchester City boss Nick Cushing:
“I have never questioned the spirit of the team. Today it doesn’t surprise me that, once we had the performance and we had the control of the game, we would create opportunities. It’s a good win in the end.
“There’s been a bit of illness, so the squad is light, but we’ve built a squad this year that is probably the most balanced we’ve had.
“That means when you do get a mini [injury] crisis, you can rely on the other players and maybe just shift the system a little bit. The team that went out today showed what a good team we are.”
