Gymnastics Master Post: Women’s Quals

In regards to team USA:

1. Is anyone else not surprised at all to see that the individual spot that should have been Riley was wasted on Skinner?  What exactly was the point in bringing her, we all knew she wouldn’t get in on any finals or the all around, whereas Riley had a chance on bars.

2. Insanely underwhelming.  That’s it.  That’s the comment.  They’d better get it together if they want to win the team again because right now it’s not looking great.

3. Also those leotards were tacky as hell, I wish they had worn the podium training ones instead.

Now onto subdivision 2

I love that Listunova’s floor main theme is Russkaya (Russian Dance) by Tchaikovsky in Swan Lake, it’s very fitting!

It’s nonsense the Downies aren’t there, team GB messed up massively with that.

Melnikova’s floor routine is more entertaining than literally any of the US gymnasts.  She even did an entrechat, we love seeing gymnasts doing ballet and they actually look like ballet.

It’s so cool there’s a Sri Lankan gymnast and after the fall on the first, she looks so good!  

I miss Shang Chunsong.

Double layout dismount will forever be the most beautiful dismount for bars and I miss Gabby’s.

I’m obsessed with China’s leotards, especially Fan Yilin’s blue and white, they’re actually elegant which so many leos aren’t anymore.

MASKS GO OVER THE NOSE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.  OVER. THE. NOSE.

Okay in the dance elements of floor, someone please tell the gymnasts to extend their entire arm and have the energy go all the way down so they don’t just flop but actually look elegant and beautiful and meaningful.  Please.

I know it’s super common, but I love the back dive to candle mount on beam.  It’s so elegant!!

I’m so sad Sanne didn’t make it back to the beam finals, it was so nice to see a gymnast who wasn’t tumbling focused win in 2016.

Were Elisa Haemmerle’s legs supposed to be that bent in her vault??  They weren’t bent enough to look like a tuck, but also not straight at all...

Halfway through Russia’s bars, I’m falling asleep.  I’m just excited for men’s gymnastics.

Have you always liked gymnastics or is it a more recent sport you got into?

I have always liked it, been watching since 2008 i think? But it kinda goes on and off like basically every sport i follow. Right now i watch everything i can, but some years i only watch the highlights or major tournaments.

I like the sport, but it's the personalities and individual athletes that draw me in. Right now i really like Simone and Suni for the US, Mai (Murakami), Angelina (Melnikova), Nina (Derwael) and Li (Shijia).

I always really admired Shang (Chunsong), i'm sad she retired when she did.
